For the most part, a cruise ship job isn’t much different than a similar job on land. And the basic requirements are very similar.

But, some requirements are unique to cruise ship jobs, including:

Meet the Age Requirement : Most cruise lines require applicants to be 18 or older, but some may have a minimum age requirement of 21.
Language Fluency : All passenger-facing crew members should be fluent in English. Major cruise lines cater to international passengers, but English is the primary language on board. If you want a job on a cruise that requires no experience, you better like cleaning. Most of the entry-level positions are cleaning, maintenance, or serving roles.

How Much Money Does Cruise Ship Crew Make?

Cruise ship jobs pay an average annual salary of $16,000 to $20,000 . The lowest-level positions have annual wages as low as $6,000, while a cruise ship captain can make up to $180,000 annually .

Cruise ship crew members don’t make a lot of money. But while they’re working on a cruise, crew members receive accessible accommodations and food. Some cruise ships also provide free WiFi and an allowance for drinks and alcoholic beverages.

We spoke to one former cruise ship employee who said she was able to “pay off my student debt of $30,000 in two years, even on the low salary.”

According to Sara, she didn’t have any expenses when she was working on cruise ships. She added, “every dollar I made went straight to paying off debts or savings.”

Understand The Employment Contract

Cruise lines employ staff on contracts to work onboard cruise ships. A typical employment contract lasts between four to ten months though contracts can be longer or shorter depending on the cruise ship job.

Most positions require crew members to work 10 to 13 hours per day, seven days a week.

It sounds like a lot of work.

Due to the long hours and demanding responsibilities of working on a cruise ship, most employees take time off between contracts. Typically a few weeks or a couple of months break.

While between contracts, crew members can fly home and go back to regular living before the start of their next contract.

But not all positions are that demanding. While a cruise ship job such as bartending or serving may require long working hours, the entertainment staff might only work three or four hours a day.

And crew members working in the most demanding positions may get one day off each week. If a crew member gets a day off when the cruise ship is in port, they are free to explore the port or take a shore excursion just like guests.

And there are several perks to working onboard cruise ships, including:

After speaking with more than two dozen staff members on our last cruise, we didn’t find anyone who wasn’t excited about their cruise ship job.

Beyond the perks written in the contract, crew members spoke highly of the camaraderie and friendships made with other staff members.

If you want to work on a cruise ship, it pays to have some experience. But if you don’t have any, there are still ways to get a job on a cruise ship without any experience at all!

You can find jobs online and in newspapers, as well as through other companies that hire for positions like these. You should also consider applying for internships or volunteer opportunities that might lead to a full-time job after the internship ends.

If none of those options seem to be working out for you, then try looking for positions in other industries like hospitality or retail management, where there are often openings available at conventions and fairs.

Finally, ask your friends who work in the industry what they think about their experiences with getting hired after being unemployed for a while—they may be able to tell you about some people they know who got hired right away after being out of work for a while.

Getting paid to travel the world on a cruise ship! Sounds too good to be true, right?

Get ready to have your mind totally blown – into the water, that is – because for cruise ship crew members, getting paid to visit ports around the globe is just one of the MANY perks of cruise ship jobs.

It’s not all walking on white sand beaches and sipping on $1 cervezas, though that does happen quite a bit. Cruise ship crew play hard, it’s true, but they work hard, too.

Whether it’s the Cruise Activities Staff helping passengers have an awesome time by hosting fun activities like karaoke, pool games, or bingo, or creating the perfect signature cocktail as an onboard bartender, ANY crew member’s main duty is to create a great vacation experience for each and every guest onboard.

If providing excellent customer service while exploring new ports around the world sounds like a dream come true, maybe a life at sea is the perfect fit for you.

My Background

I can truly say that I was born with ‘sea legs’ since I spent the first 3 years of my life (from babyhood through my toddler years) on the ocean.

My father was a Captain on cargo ships, and for many of his contracts, my mother and I joined him onboard.

For the most part, we traveled along the southern coast of the US through to South America via the Panama Canal, delivering goods like Del Monte bananas.

In the early eighties, my family got off cargo ships, and my father went on to become a Marine Lawyer in the UK. My mother started her own Marine Recruitment firm in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Initially, she placed Deck and Engine Officers with a variety of shipping companies and later expanded to cruise ships, recruiting for major lines such as Princess Cruises, Cunard, V-Ships, P&O Australia, and Holland America.

When I entered university, an opportunity came up through Princess Cruises to work onboard as Seasonal Youth Activities Staff during my summer break. I jumped at the chance!

I interviewed and landed the job after an intensive screening session with the head of recruitment for Princess. I worked onboard for about 4-6 months of each school year during all class breaks, the first 5 of my 10 years at sea.

Working On A Cruise Ship: Building My Life At Sea

Once I finished university (with 3 BA’s and also a Teaching Degree), I applied for a promotion with Princess to become an onboard Professional Development Crew Trainer. It was then that I started working on cruise ships full-time.

During my first year as a Crew Trainer, I was able to make, and save, enough money to pay off ALL of my student loan debt – over $35,000!

I spent the next 3 years (years 5 through 8 onboard) as a Crew Training Officer. I was further promoted to onboard Human Resources Manager with P&O Australia (one of Princess Cruises affiliate lines) during my final 2 years at sea.

After 10 years working onboard (13 if you count my baby years at sea), I took a break from ships in 2010 to do a full season of snowboarding in one of the snow capitals of Canada: Revelstoke, BC. I met my husband within 12 weeks of being onshore, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Through 2015, I remained tied to the cruise ship industry by aiding major cruise lines with the recruitment of candidates across Canada as well as internationally via online hiring methods.

During my years onboard, as well as within shore-side recruitment, I noticed a massive gap in valid information online for prospective crew members regarding finding out exactly how to break into the cruise ship industry.

In response, I started my own company in February of 2015 to provide prospective candidates with a one-stop-shop for up-to-date and accurate cruise ship employment information as well as cruise ship cover letter creation, resume writing, and interview assistance. My clients now span the globe, working onboard with various cruise lines in their dream cruise ship jobs!

While working on a cruise ship is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and pretty luxurious (imagine port time off in Tahiti one day and an overnight in Maui a few days later), in the end, it is still a ‘job.’

If you show up onboard expecting to get weekends off and to see each and every port then you will be disappointed. Prepare yourself for 7-day work weeks, lots of split shifts, and being required to be ‘on’ all the time, even when off duty, in passenger areas. But most of all, prepare yourself for one of the BEST experiences of your LIFE!

The truth is, if you love travel, saving a ton of money, and meeting and working with amazing people, then working on a cruise ship will be one of the best career moves you will ever make.

It wasn’t until I gave land life a go (for 5 months after I finished the last of my 4 university degrees) that I realized that a life at sea – as a career – was truly for me. As noted above, from 2000-2005, I worked seasonally onboard ships for about 4-6 months each year.

However, in 2005, I took the plunge (pun intended) and a promotion – to Crew Training Officer – and worked full-time on ships until 2010. Working onboard cruise ships may be an unconventional career, but it is one of the most fulfilling ones I know of out there.

Cruise Ship Jobs: The Types Of People You’ll Work With

Cruise Ship Jobs: Getting Started

Decide if going to sea is the right decision for you. It’s important to be honest with yourself about the possible hardships you may experience and whether or not you see yourself excelling in such an environment.
Gather information. There is a wealth of information online regarding cruise ship employment. Go to each cruise line’s main webpage and search for their employment links.
Determine which position(s) you are best suited for. Look at all of your past employment, volunteer and/or educational experience. If you’re unsure what onboard position would best suit you, speak with a Cruise Ship Employment Specialist.

Choosing A Company

Each cruise line is different, caters to a specific market, provides a certain level of customer service, and has varying crew amenities and associated benefits.
Select lines that you feel match the type of service you want to provide to guests and what type of experience you are hoping for. For example, larger lines will offer broader itinerary/travel options, and smaller lines will offer a more ‘tight-knit’ crew atmosphere.
Hint: Revamp your resume and cater it specifically to each line you are applying for. Through your prior research, you will be able to select keywords and ideas that represent each cruise line. Use these terms throughout your resume and cover letter. This will show the recruiter that their cruise line is the one that you want to work for.
The same goes for the name of the position you are applying for. Many cruise lines utilize various titles to refer to the same role. For example, Cruise Staff can also be known as Animation Staff, Activities Staff, etc. Ensure you use the correct terminology for your role when applying to each line. This information is usually found in the career section of each cruise line’s website.

Requirements/Training

Certain roles, such as Bridge/Deck and/or Technical positions, will require post-secondary training at a certified Marine School. However, for almost every other role onboard, most cruise lines do not require any post-secondary training. Instead, cruise lines prefer to see at least 1-2 years of relevant experience in a related role ashore. For example, if you are applying for an onboard retail sales position, the cruise line will want to see that you have 1-2 years of high-end retail sales experience. You may also want to consider some additional cruise-specific training via a Tourism/Hospitality School and/or an online Cruise Ship Program.

Onboard Hierarchy

There are three main crew categories that exist onboard a cruise ship. Each category’s associated positions may differ from company to company. However, these three categories will usually always be in place.

Officer Category

This category often includes the following personnel: Deck Officers, Technical Officers, and Hotel Managers. Hotel Managers and related Officers include: Hotel Director, Cruise Director, Human Resources Manager, Crew Trainer, Ships Doctors, Security Officers, Retail Manager, Photo Manager, Casino Manager, Youth Activities Manager, etc. In addition, some entry-level positions onboard are given Officer-level status from day one. These roles can include Pursers (Hotel Front Desk), Cruise Activities Staff, and Entertainers.

Staff Category

This category often includes non-supervisory/non-managerial crew in the following divisions: Retail/Gift Shop, Photo/Video, Spa/Salon, Casino, Youth Activities Staff, Production Staff, Entertainment Staff, and sometimes Cruise Activities Staff.

Crew Category

This category often includes crew in the largest departments onboard. For example, all Housekeeping Staff, Food and Beverage Personnel, and Security Patrolmen.

How To Get Promoted On A Cruise Ship

One of the best things about working onboard a cruise ship is that promotion is NOT based on seniority. Advancements are made based on mid-term and end-of-contract evaluations. Participation in ‘Career Path Transfer Programs,’ professional development training, and registered job shadowing can also aid with a crew member’s promotional options.

As outlined above, most new-hire crew will start either at a crew or staff level and then progress to a supervisory/managerial or officer level thereafter.

Good news: Promotions can happen very quickly based on your job performance! It can also happen due to the ever-growing number of new ships being added to cruise ship fleets every single year.

The Reality Of Working At Sea

Many new crew, or ‘fresh fish,’ are unaware of the challenges they will face on board after getting a job on a cruise ship. I always inform candidates that they should expect to potentially ‘hate’ their first couple of weeks on board. New crew members are doing SO much during their initial time on board, including (but not limited to) dealing with jet lag, learning a new job, and getting used to a new living situation. Also, doing all of their additional emergency training. It is A LOT to take in. If you can make it the first 30 days, you WILL start to see and experience the benefits of working on a cruise ship.

New crew should come with the mentality that the job is very unique with a lot of cool benefits that include exploring in ports around the globe. However, it is important to remember that the job isn’t for everyone. – Alana Delia

Know that it will take you some time to adjust to the new work, environment and people,” she says. Cruise ship life is all-encompassing, so give yourself at least 2-3 weeks to find your groove, your preferences and your routine. Even though there are set times when you may have to show up for work, during your off hours, how you spend your energy is up to you. Since you’ll be surrounded by people almost 24/7, I found it very helpful to make sure that I had “me” time and took care of myself by getting outside on deck each day or escorting a FREE passenger tour ashore like ATV’ing in Alaska!

How To Get A Job On A Cruise Ship (Part 3)

If you ask any crew member why they continue to work onboard, contract after contract, they will usually give you one or more of the following three responses:

The travel.
The community – this being one of the most important, as you are both working and living with your fellow crew for the full duration of your contract.

It comes down to the lifestyle – most just don’t want to give it up!

The Community

There are few jobs on this planet where you get to work AND live with over 50 nationalities at the same time! As a crew member, you exist in a microcosm of the entire world. Most new crew reflect on their experiences of being welcomed onboard with great fondness.

“The best part about living in a cruise ship community is having an amazing support team in the people you work with! We all work towards a common goal, so it’s always fun at work, but it’s also a blast when you get to go out in port with your friends as well,” says Michelle Hughes, Media Manager at Carnival.

In the end, ALL veteran crewmembers remember what it was like to be the ‘new guy.’ As such, all ‘newbies’ are welcomed on board with open arms no matter what race, creed, or sexual orientation. After all – you’re all in the same boat!

The Camaraderie

Working onboard a cruise ship will ensure that you quickly make some of the best and longest-lasting friendships of your life. You are all there for many of the same reasons – to travel the world, make and save money, and work with a global community. There is something so amazing about living and working in a little floating city. It truly brings everyone together.

After a few contracts, you will realize that you have friends with home bases that span the globe! During your leaves (vacation time) from the ship, you will be hard-pressed not to find a corner of the world where you have a ship friend to stay with. Working at sea isn’t just a job – it’s a way of life.

Work Hours At Sea

In the first contract that I completed as a seasonal Youth Activities Staff, I worked about 7-10 hours a day with 1-2 half days off, or one full day off per week, in port. If I had a full day off on the ship, I would be scheduled to work that night when the ship set sail – hence, it still was a 7-day work week.

Some cruises I worked with the 3-7 year olds, other weeks the 8-12’s and finally sometimes the 13-17 year olds. There were also times when I was assigned to supervise the pool areas or help out the Cruise Staff with hosting activities for the adult passengers onboard.

When I moved up to a Crew Training Officer role and later HR Manager, I could totally design my own schedule.

Thus, I worked around port days and ensured that I got to see each and every place the ship stopped. One of the most important things I learned during my decade at sea was that working on a cruise ship requires one to always expect the unexpected and to be flexible to all tasks requested of you. All your hard work onboard is made worthwhile each and every cruise when you take the time to experience and enjoy where your ship has brought you that day.

How To Get A Job On A Cruise Ship (Part 4)

Cruise ship jobs pay and cost of living.

One of the best things about working onboard is that the cruise line provides you with your room and board. As a result, your living expenses are pretty much zero, save for the minimal cost of crew internet and satellite phone cards ($10-$20 each for 2-5 hours of time) and your crew bar tab. (FYI – drinks in the crew bar, on average, are about $1-2 each.)

Working on a cruise ship is one of the quickest ways that I know of to save nearly ALL of your earnings! You just don’t have the type of bills that most people on land have. You’re not paying for rent, food, cable, gas, a car – the list goes on! Many crew who make working at sea their ‘career’ pay off MASSIVE amounts of student debt in short amounts of time and buy homes and businesses outright upon their return to land life.

It doesn’t cost you anything to work onboard. I loved it! I spent 7 years out there. I travelled the world and met my fiancé! Working on ships bought me a house!” – James Taylor, Casino Dealer/Manager for both Carnival and Royal Caribbean International

Most new-hire crew will start in the $1000-$1,500 USD a month range. To those working on land this may sound like a low monthly starting salary, however, if you take into account that you will actually be SAVING MOST, if not ALL, of this amount per month then working at sea starts to make a whole lot of sense.

If candidates question about the starting salary during the interview process I usually ask them this simple question:

“Can you tell me that after your pay for ALL of your monthly expenses working on land that you SAVE – free & clear – more than $1,000 USD?”

Most of the time, the answer is ‘NO.’

I then remind them that they will be doing this for six months (which is the length of a typical cruise ship contract). Now, isn’t that a nice little nest egg to come home with? Moreover, when you reach a supervisory or managerial level, onboard salaries can triple, quadruple, and skyrocket even further.

To give you an idea, I started my 10 years at sea as a youth activities staff member in the $1,200 USD a month range. Five years later, my salary tripled when I was promoted to Crew Training Officer. By the time I finished up on ships after 10 years at sea, I was making almost six times what I started at.

The Costs – Docs & Uniform

As a new crew member, you will be required to organize and pay for a variety of documents prior to joining your assigned ship.

I recommend that you have your passport processed, up to date, and ready prior to even starting the cruise line application process.
C1D1 Visa – If you are from a country other than the US or Canada, you will be required to obtain a C1D1 Visa if you are working for a cruise line with a head office based in the USA. Once you are provided with an ‘Offer Of Hire Letter’ from your cruise line, you will be able to book an appointment at your local US Consulate to obtain a C1D1 Visa. Pricing varies based on your country of origin.
Pre-Employment Medical Check . Again, this is not something you will do until you have been offered employment with a cruise line. Each line has different medical requirements, and as such, pricing and processing will vary. Typically, cruise line medicals are valid for a 2-year period. The medical check allows for your FREE medical coverage while you work onboard. It is a good idea to keep your own medical coverage going, though, for your own use when you are home on leave. The company will not provide for your medical needs when you are on vacation in between contracts.
Pre-Employment Criminal Records Check . Again, this is not something you will do until you have been officially offered employment with a cruise line. Each line has different criminal check requirements, and as such, pricing and processes will vary. Typically, criminal checks are valid for a 1-year period with most companies.
Uniform . Once you are offered employment, your cruise line administrator will inform you of any uniform requirements. In most cases, the line will provide you with your uniform, with the exception of uniform shoes. You will be responsible for purchasing appropriate uniform shoes and the associated correct colors of socks, nylons, etc.
Additionally, for some roles, such as Cruise Activities Staff, you may be required to provide your own theme night costumes. Your administrator will inform you of specifics should you require additional outfits outside the standard-issued uniform.

How To Get A Job On A Cruise Ship (Part 5)

Preparing for the unknown.

A crew member’s life is lived primarily on the water. Those who have chosen a career at sea may or may not have a primary residence. They often spend their 8-10 weeks off in between contracts traveling or visiting/staying with family.

It is a good idea prior to departing, to assess for yourself what it is that you truly want to focus on for the duration of your contract. Will it be the travel? Saving money? Or, just having a good old time? Honing in on your goals before departure will help you stay motivated during your time away at sea.

Necessary Certifications

As noted above, most cruise lines do not require any post-secondary training for their non-deck or technical-related positions. Prospective crew will want to focus on gaining the right kind of experience prior to applying. i.e., 1-2 years of relevant and related shore-side experience and perhaps some additional cruise-specific training.

How To Get A Job On A Cruise Ship (Part 6)

Getting a job with a cruise line.

Some cruise lines prefer that you apply directly to their main offices. Others will prefer that you apply via their official hiring partners in your home country. Still, others want you to go through a specific concession agency. Application information can be found on their website via each cruise line’s career or employment section.

Have all your documents ‘ready to go’ upon applying. For example, a passport, resume, references etc. I submitted all of my required documents all at once. This moved my application process along very quickly and in my favour. – Alana Delia

I think that the key to success in a cruise ship application and interview process is to do the research on life at sea before you start and see if it actually is for you. The first step to gaining a position on board a cruise ship is to start talking to people who are already doing it or have done it. Reach out to friends, family members, and crew forums, and do some YouTube searches on cruise ship jobs and employment.

Shore Excursion Assistant – Although cruise ship experience is often preferred, students with travel knowledge, sales experience, languages and customer service experience could apply.

Port Lecturer – This position is great for someone that has extensive knowledge about port information including history, culture and wildlife. Students with outgoing personalities and strong presentation skills are typically hired.

Guest Services Officer – Students can get cash handling experience from part time bank jobs and head cashier-type positions. Call center or customer service desk experience may offer skills such as telephone etiquette, customer service, and compliant resolution.

Gift Shop Sales Associate – For students that have retail sales experience, this is one of the best entry level jobs to apply for. Disc Jockey – Regardless of a student’s education, if they have experience working as a professional DJ, they can work on a cruise ship. Similar to the cruise staff positions, an outgoing and dynamic personality is best. Knowledge of lighting and sound is preferred. Youth Staff – Students that have experience working at a summer camp, supervising recreation programs and even babysitting could apply for this cruise ship job. Degrees or diplomas in physical education, recreation, day care, or teaching are advantageous.

Recreation Staff – Recreation staff cruise jobs are ideal for graduates in physical education or recreation. Additional qualifications such as rock climbing are an asset for jobs with Royal Caribbean or NCL. Lifeguard certification and First Aid are also great skills to get students hired.

Cruise Staff Department

Our Cruise Staff make a dramatic impact on each guest’s cruise experience by conducting a variety of onboard activities for them to enjoy. Junior Assistant Cruise Director

The Junior Assistant Cruise Director is an entry-level position on the Cruise Staff team. This team provides fun and exciting activities for guests, like trivia games, Zumba® classes, ice sculpture demonstrations, dance lessons, and arts and crafts. In this role your goal is to help the Cruise Staff provide a premium entertainment package and make our guests’ vacations memorable. You contribute to these memories by actively participating in all events with enthusiasm and dedication.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the entertainment and hospitality field, including direct experience hosting activities for large groups. Confident/strong microphone experience is required. Entertainment talents such as dancing, singing, stage performance, hosting sports events, and arts and crafts are a plus, but candidates must be willing to participate in any/all such activities onboard as part of a team environment.

Assistant Cruise Director

In addition to the regular Cruise Staff responsibilities, the Assistant Cruise Director-DJ provides entertaining, engaging, and memorable DJ and emcee services throughout various shipboard venues.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years' DJ experience at corporate parties, weddings, or similar events; experience hosting karaoke; and a thorough knowledge of a variety of musical genres from 50s classics to today’s popular music. Deck & Technical

The Deck department is overseen by the Staff Captain and is responsible for navigating the ship as well as managing all safety-related matters, including environment and public health. This team works closely with the Technical department to ensure that all equipment is well maintained and meets international laws and regulations. The Technical department includes a variety of positions that range from entry-level roles, such as Deck Clerk, Trainees, and Cadets; to highly qualified seafarer roles, such as Environmental Officer, Security officers, and navigating officers all the way through to the ship’s Captain.

The Technical department is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operation and maintenance of all onboard machinery and equipment, covering a wide range of areas including power generation and propulsion; heating and air conditioning; and deck, hotel, and entertainment support systems. The Technical department’s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and environmentally sound operation at all times. It is a dynamic department with a wide variety of roles and career opportunities.

Deck Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for safe navigation of the ship, maintaining a 24-hour watch by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Every ship employs three Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Officer, Senior 2nd Officer, and 2nd Officer to cover the three watches. Each watch is supported by a Junior Watchkeeper in the rank of 3rd Officer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Chief Mates Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the highest possible levels of compliance by shipboard staff with all established environmental standards, in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must be a licensed Deck or Engineer officer holding a minimum of either a 2nd Deck Officer or 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence, or at least five years' experience with environmental management systems.

Security Officer

Security Officers are responsible for leading a team of security personnel in monitoring guest and crew activities, investigating security matters that arise, and promptly reporting and correcting security issues in order to maintain a safe and secure shipboard environment in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization. Criminal Investigation experience is preferred as well as knowledge of ISPS code and experience with security surveillance and screening equipment.

Technical Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for maintaining a 24-hour watch in the ship’s Engine Room, by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Depending on vessel size, each ship employs either three or four Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Engineer and 2nd Engineer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Hotel Services Engineer

The Hotel Services Engineer leads an onboard Hotel maintenance team in achieving the highest standards appearance for guests and crew area, prompting defect correction in a cost-efficient manner while in line with our company strategy and core values.

The Hotel Services Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Hotel maintenance utilizing the services of the tradesmen within his/her sub-department, as well as the electrical and ventilation departments. This position works closely with the Staff Electro-Technical Officer and the Ventilation Officer when required.

Requirements Applicants must have Technical qualification at OND or HND level or equivalent; a minimum of two years' experience in hotel or hospitality industry maintenance; the ability to read and understand technical drawings and manuals; and excellent technical knowledge to be able to manage, supervise, and guide officers and tradesmen of varying levels of expertise.

Second Plumbers

Second Plumbers are responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of the onboard water, sanitary, and heating systems in a cost-efficient manner that is in compliance with company safety standards.

Requirements Applicants must have experience with small repair, evacuation pumps, and welding. Prior experience in a hotel or shipboard environment is preferred.

3rd Engineer

Third Engineer Officers are responsible for operating, inspecting, and maintaining engines, machinery, and equipment in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner to the highest professional standards.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Engineers Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

2nd Electro-Technical Officer

Second Electro-Technical Officers assist in leading a team of Electro-Technical staff in the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation, inspection, and repair of all shipboard electrical systems in compliance with company safety standards to ensure the protection and safety of all guests and crew members.

Requirements Applicants must hold an HND qualification in the electro-technical field and have a minimum one year's sea-time experience.

Food & Beverage Manager

The Food & Beverage Manager oversees the food and/or beverage operations onboard to achieve the highest level of customer service, maximize revenue opportunities, and control costs. This position supports a minimum of different restaurant and beverage outlets that contain exciting menus designed to match our numerous itineraries.

Requirements Applicants must have a degree from a recognized hotel/catering/culinary school; five years’ experience in a related senior management position with an extensive understanding of food production and restaurant service within the hotel or cruise ship industry; and a thorough knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and the effective distribution of goods.

Assistant Food & Beverage Manager

The Assistant Food & Beverage Manager assists in the management and administration of all onboard Food & Beverage areas to achieve the highest levels of customer service, revenue generation, and cost control.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years’ experience in a related F&B management position with experience in beverage operations, food production, and restaurant service within the hotel or cruise ship industry. A degree from a recognized hotel/catering/culinary school is preferred.

Junior Assistant Food & Beverage Manager

The Junior Assistant Food & Beverage Manager provides operational assistance and administrative support to onboard F&B management to achieve the highest levels of customer service, revenue generation, and cost control.

Restaurant department.

The Restaurant department is responsible for the operation of dining services in all Food & Beverage venues. Providing excellent customer service to our guests is a key function in this position and requires interaction with multiple departments and levels of management to ensure the operation functions smoothly. Bar Department

The Bar department looks after all front-of-house guest bars and supports back-of-house bar locations onboard all Princess vessels. Culinary Arts

This department is responsible for all food operations onboard the ship and manages food production for not only our guests but also our crew members. It is a very large and active department with a wide representation of the culinary arts. Requirements Applicants for entry-level positions must have a minimum of one year's culinary experience at a hotel restaurant or resort, a general understanding of HACCP regulations and safe food-handling procedures, the ability to perform physical work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, and good written and verbal communication skills.

Housekeeping Department

The Housekeeping department is responsible for maintaining the highest level of cleanliness and service in guest staterooms, public areas, and open decks as well as providing laundry services to both guests and crew members. This department is also responsible for the movement of baggage on and off the ship and making sure the ship is ready for new guests each and every cruise. Entry-level positions within this department include Utility Cleaner, Accommodations Attendant, and Laundry Steward.

Housekeeping Jobs

Requirements Applicants must have prior experience within the hospitality industry, an understanding of public health and environmental requirements relating to cabin service, good verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Human Resources

The shipboard Human Resources team works in conjunction with the shoreside Employee Relations team to implement and uphold all HR policies and initiatives in line with the company’s core values. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the Crew Welfare program, creating an optimal work environment to enhance the onboard employee experience, and supporting shipboard and shoreside management teams.

Human Resources Jobs

Requirements Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in human resources, adult education, or a related field from an accredited college or five years’ experience in shipboard operations, training, or employee relations. Knowledge of various international human resources standards in the areas of compensation, employee relations, general benefits, employment and staffing practices, and organizational development is preferred.

Information Technology

The onboard Information Technology team manages and supports all shipboard IT systems and operations while also providing maximum system use. The onboard team works closely with our shoreside IT department to continually improve our shipboard systems and technology. The focus is always on the guest experience and maintaining safe operations. We do this by keeping informed of the latest technological advancements, and providing service excellence in all aspects of technology.

The IT Officer is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and support of all onboard computer systems, mobile devices, physical and virtual servers, networks, point-of-sale terminals, network equipment, and peripherals. This consists primarily of level 1 and 2 support as well as system monitoring and troubleshooting. The IT Officer works closely with the shoreside IT group to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have at least two years' related experience in areas of user support within a medium-sized LAN; a thorough knowledge of computer systems including but not limited to Linux, MS Office, Windows Client and Server editions; and experience troubleshooting PC hardware, software applications, and network connectivity. Additional requirements include the ability to meet deadlines and maintain an attention to detail and accuracy while working under pressure in a team environment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to lift and carry IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Management or supervisory experience and a BS or higher in computer science, MIS, or related field is strongly preferred.

Computer System Specialist

The Computer System Specialist is responsible for the level 1 support of all onboard computer systems. This includes installing and configuring new PC system hardware, upgrading existing hardware, and supporting mobile devices. The Computer System Specialist works closely with the IT Officer to ensure all onboard systems perform at optimum levels.

Requirements Applicants must have strong customer service skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks; proficiency in the use of computer business applications with working knowledge of PC / LAN systems, hardware and software applications; a minimum of two years’ experience in areas of user support and troubleshooting hardware and software issues; the ability to meet deadlines and maintain attention to detail and accuracy while working in a team environment; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to lift and carry IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Current CompTIA A+ 220-801 Certification, technical school certification, or three or more years of equivalent work experience is strongly preferred.

Medical Officers

Healthcare assistants conduct health screening, surveillance testing, vaccine campaigns, and work closely with onboard medical staff and admin assistants in attending to patients during daily clinics.

Healthcare Assistants perform various technical and non-clinical administrative tasks that support the efficient and safe operation of the medical center under the direction and supervision of the Senior Nurse. Primary responsibilities include laboratory specimen collection for COVID-19 surveillance testing, all associated administrative functions and onboard laboratory specimen processing procedures. Other duties include basic assessment and triage, assisting with patient care and activities of daily living, specimen collection for other tests and procedures, patient education and vaccination campaigns. Additional duties include equipment checks, medicines and consumables inventory management, participation in drills, audits, inspections, and training of other crew members. Technical skills are learned and practiced on board.

Public Health Officer

As a Public Health Officer you will monitor shipboard public health and infection control procedures and assist both shipboard Management and Corporate Public Health Director in overseeing the implementation and compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at all response levels including for COVID-19, AGE, and other communicable diseases.

Additionally, you will participate as a key member of the shipboard Outbreak Management Team (OMT), coordinate the implementation and compliance with OMT decisions and oversee the correct and safe storage, par levels, condition, and use of all infection control related PPE, disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and other supplies and related equipment.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, biological sciences, or closely related field preferred. Certification in CDC-VSP, Infection Control, and EU SHIPSAN preferred.
Two years of shipboard experience or three years of full-time shoreside experience in implementing, overseeing, or auditing public health programs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of infection control practices and Vessel Sanitation Standards. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced cruise ship environment, while prioritizing workloads. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate to culturally diverse teams. Self- sufficient and able to work independently.
Critical Professional related Technical Skills: Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Experience with electronic health record platforms.
Cruise industry experience is preferred.

Photography & Video Departments

Onboard photography is primarily centered on portrait and event photography, using both natural locations and onboard studio setups with backdrops and studio lighting. Our Videographers produce a souvenir DVD documenting the cruise experience from beginning to end, showing both onboard entertainment and port tours and destinations. The work is fast-paced, high-volume, and high-quality. Attention to detail, teamwork, and outstanding customer service are the most important elements of this job. You will be shooting photos and videos both ashore and on the ship, processing photos and editing video footage, selling the finished products and other retail items, and providing top-quality customer service to our guests.

Staff Photographer

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year's photography work experience or two years of formal photography training. Strong computer skills and digital photography experience are preferred. We provide all digital equipment and a state-of-the-art onboard lab for use during work hours. Retail sales or customer service experience is also preferred.

Video Producer

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year of videography work experience or two years of formal video production training. Strong shooting and editing skills are required and prior sales and customer service experience is preferred. All video and editing equipment is provided onboard.

Production Technicians

Princess Cruises sets the standard for cruise line entertainment and offers exciting shipboard positions for knowledgeable and professional Technical Production staff. Our first-class theaters and entertainment venues are equipped with state-of-the-art, multi-million-dollar technical systems complete with elaborate sets, spectacular costumes, and fascinating pyrotechnic effects. Our lighting and audio systems consist of MA Lighting, High End, Vari-Lite, German Light Products, Martin Professional, Flying Pig Systems, Green Hippo, Digidesign Venue, and Midas. Our stages are equipped with intricate Tait Towers and Stage Technologies rigging systems consisting of lifts, revolves, serapid tracks, and overhead line-sets.

All of our production shows are showcased in magnificent theaters and are both conceptualized and produced in-house. We work with a talented and award-winning team of Directors, Scenic Designers, Lighting Designers, Choreographers, and Media Designers.

Senior Production Managers

Senior Production Managers oversee all production show elements including lighting, audio, video, automation/rigging, scenery, pyrotechnics, and show rehearsals.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience in stage management or production/technical direction, with an emphasis in musical theater productions. Strong organizational skills with excellent inter-personal skills are required.

Assistant Production Manager-Lighting

The Assistant Production Manager-Lighting is responsible for programming and operating lighting systems within multiple shipboard venues. This role safely delivers functioning and well-maintained lighting, pyrotechnic, and video systems in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating, designing, and maintaining MA Lighting, Flying Pig Systems consoles; High End, Vari-Lite, GLP, Martin Professional fixtures; Green Hippo, Catalyst media servers; and familiarity with Pyrodigital console operation.

Assistant Production Manager-Audio

The Assistant Production Manager-Audio is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and programing of live audio within a variety of onboard venues as assigned by shipboard management. This role safely delivers functioning and well-maintained audio systems in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating and maintaining large-format consoles and mixed media playback. Equipment operating specifics: Digidesign Venue Profile and SC48 consoles, iZ Corp RADAR playback system, LCS Matrix 3 automated surround-sound system, PeaveyMedia Matrix audio interface, QSC Q-SYS Integrated System, and Countryman/Shure UHF wireless microphones.

Assistant Production Manager-Crew Chief

The Assistant Production Manager-Crew Chief is responsible for safely operating functioning and well-maintained rigging/automation systems and associated props and scenery in support of a dynamic, engaging, and memorable entertainment and activities program. In addition, this role assists in the general operation of the venue while managing assigned production staff.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience operating and maintaining Tait Towers Navigator systems and Stage Technologies Acrobat/Chameleon systems. A good understanding of rigging principles and practice is required. Strong organizational skills with excellent inter-personal skills are essential.

Stage Crew are responsible for assisting the Production team with the maintenance of all equipment, scenery, and props as well as show and event preparation pertaining to A/V equipment, scenic goods, props, lighting, and rigging.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of one year's professional work experience with a technical theater background and must possess a solid understanding of basic theater principles to effectively work with mechanized stage equipment, pyrotechnic product, lighting equipment, scenic items and props, rigging and audio equipment, as assigned.

Pursers Department

The Pursers department is the center of Hotel operations onboard all Princess vessels. This dynamic department encompasses a variety of roles and is responsible for the management of hotel accounts, shore excursions, and shipboard personnel operations such as the Crew Office.

Junior Assistant Purser

Junior Assistant Purser is the entry-level position into the Pursers department. Most Junior Assistant Pursers initially begin their onboard career at the Front Desk where responsibilities include providing exceptional customer service to each guest, assisting guests with account inquires, resolving customer service issues, and answering telephone calls. This position offers excellent career development and promotion opportunities in hotel management.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the hotel/hospitality industry performing junior management duties and front desk responsibilities at a large hotel. Applicants must also be computer literate, have experience with large volume cash handling, possess mathematical and analytical skills, and have excellent customer service skills. Secretarial skills and foreign language fluency are also preferred.

Stewarding Department

The Stewarding department is responsible for maintaining meticulous sanitation and hygiene standards in all Galley areas, ensuring that operating procedures are upheld and adhered to at all times. This includes the proper cleaning, handling, and storage of tableware, cookware, silverware, and Galley equipment.

Requirements Applicants must have a basic knowledge of cleaning and sanitation procedures for the food service industry, good verbal communications skills, and the ability to perform physical labor in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.

Youth Department

Our team of Youth Staff offer an exciting program for kids and teens ages 3-17. The Princess Youth Program is offered on all vessels, year-round in state-of-the-art, dedicated facilities. Our centers are equipped with digital jukeboxes, foosball, air hockey, skeeball, DJ booths, video game stations and more. Our Youth Staff offer a variety of activities, including games, sports, science workshops, and educational programs. Individuals who are outgoing, enthusiastic, energetic and have an interest in entertaining kids of any age are encouraged to apply.

Requirements Applicants for Youth Staff must have a minimum of two years’ work experience in a youth/child care-related or teaching field or previous employment in a recreational or educational setting such as camp counseling, coaching, and/or leading outdoor or community-center activities. Experience supervising kids in a group setting is also required. Experience with children of several ages is strongly preferred, as counselors must be willing to work with any age group to which they are assigned.
