If you’re looking to make an exotic destination your next vacation, let’s talk about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Hawaii. The answers are as follows: visit Hawaii on a Carnival cruise (of course), and… visit Hawaii because this place is simply spectacular! Take a Hawaii cruise and explore exotic locations spread across four islands — the Hawaiian island chain is home to names you know, like Maui, Kona and Honolulu. These spots feature postcard-worthy waterfalls, volcanoes and some of the world’s most stunning, sunning beaches. You’ll find these spread across an island chain so otherworldly that you may forget you’re in the states! Best of all, that postcard you’re sure to send home will require only domestic postage.

  • Experience some of the world's most famous beaches.
  • Get up-close with a volcanic mountain.
  • Hula it up at a real luau.

Sail Through The Hawaiian Islands

On a Hawaii cruise, you’ll sail to a verdant, otherworldly setting of steaming volcanoes, dense rainforest, tropical blooms, and palm-fringed beaches. You’ll be welcomed by the gentle, friendly Hawaiian people into a world of deep spirituality, expressed through the Aloha spirit.

Sail aboard one of our contemporary ships from Vancouver, British Columbia or Honolulu, Hawaii and bask in the perfect combination of adventures and culture ashore and relaxing days at sea. Embrace local culture with a hula show. Uncover the islands’ complex history, from the royal family to Pearl Harbor. Sample island-grown produce, bathe under waterfalls, and discover the dazzling reefs of the underwater world. Cruises to Hawaii will leave you enchanted, whatever your interests.

Featured Highlights

Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

Hawaii Cruises

Hawaii consists of eight major islands plus 124 small ones, although when we think of this isolated group of islands sitting in the central Pacific Ocean, four major islands come to mind; Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island.  The natural beauty of each is breathtaking! Towering waterfalls, verdant rainforests, brilliant aromatic gardens, and pristine beaches of gold, red, white, green or black sand!

Cruise to Hawaii

When is the best time to travel to Hawaii?  Anytime! In Hawaii there are two types of weather- perfect and more perfect. Average air temperature varies from about 78 degrees in August to 72 degrees in February (it is a bit rainier in the winter). Temperatures are very stable because the islands are surrounded by a huge, deep, warm ocean.  The ocean water temperature only varies from about 76 to 81 degrees. Visit year-round and enjoy everything the Islands have to offer.  Hiking, snorkeling, boating, biking, golfing, kayaking…well, you get the picture! But which is island is the right island for you?

Surfing in Hawaii

Don’t miss the Polynesian Cultural Center, located on Oahu’s north shore. Within eight simulated tropical villages, performers demonstrate various arts and crafts from throughout Polynesia.  Be sure to stay for the authentic luau where you’ll enjoy traditional Hawaiian music, food and maybe even learn to hula!

Cruise to Hawaii

Cruising is an ideal way to experience Hawaii as most itineraries include all the main islands, many with overnight stays! This affords you the flexibility to plan a variety of activities in each port.  Maybe you’ll head out for an early morning hike before an afternoon relaxing on the beach, or you may choose to dedicate an entire day to driving the Road to Hana!  Your ship travels late in the evening so you never have wasted travel days as would be the case if you were to take inter-island flights. Unfortunately, even the airports in paradise have security lines and baggage checks!

You can cruise Hawaii year-round on a 7-night inter-island itinerary round trip from Honolulu, with the option to add a couple of days pre or post on Oahu.  For those with more time, cruises of 11-15 nights leave from California giving you multiple sea days to relax and enjoy the ship. Either way, a cruise to Hawaii lets you enjoy all the beauty and adventure each island has to offer.

Hawaiian Cruise Departure Ports

More about a hawaiian cruise.

With eight major islands and countless natural sights and activities, a cruise to Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. No matter if you start directly from the islands themselves or begin on the West Coast, a Hawaiian cruise touches on the four key islands: Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Through history, Hawaii became a melting pot of cultures, past influences, and various heritages. Great weather throughout the year casts a perfect scene, one seldom spoiled by rain and always welcoming. From trying new foods to exploring the natural beauty to passing your time snorkeling or kayaking, a cruise to Hawaii stops in the following locations:

• Maui . Favored by travelers, Maui stands out for its beaches. But this aspect constitutes just one side of the Hawaiian island. On your cruise, explore the peak of Haleakala or take in the natural beauty of the Pacific paradise along the Hana Highway, a scenic coastal road perfect for biking. • Oahu . The island with Honolulu and Waikiki, Oahu presents a great range of shopping, dining, and nightlife options off the cruise ship. But, while exploring this island, don’t forget about history. Visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial or stop by the Polynesian Cultural Center for introduction to the many Pacific cultures. • Big Island . Five connected volcanoes are the focal point of this island’s natural wonders. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers a memorable sight of rainforests, a lava tube, and volcanic formations. • Kauai . Known as the “Garden Isle,” Kauai stands out with its natural beauty, both high and low. Travel from the mountains to the reefs, with the rainforest and Waimea Canyon in between, on a nature tour.

Hawaiian island cruises range anywhere from 7-night to 35-nights in length. Longer trips encompass other Pacific nations, such as French Polynesia, Kiribati, and the Cook Islands. Ensenada, Mexico, Honolulu, Long Beach , Los Angeles , and San Diego are some of the departure points for a Hawaii cruise.

For your trip, experience the sights, culture, and wonders of the Hawaiian island with a ship that offers just the accommodations you want. Find Hawaiian vacations with luxury characteristics or family-friendly features on board Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line , Royal Caribbean, or Holland America.

Cruise to Hawaii

Why should i go on a cruise to hawaii.

Hawaii cruises in 2025 offer a range of itineraries that allow you to visit multiple islands and see all that Hawaii has to offer, especially with cruise lines such as Princess Cruises . Hawaiian cruises, such as the Waikiki Catamaran, Sunset Cruise Maui and Maui dinner cruises, are a great way to marvel at the natural wonders of the islands. Cruises to Hawaii from San Francisco also offer an opportunity to escape the mainland and experience the lush beauty of Hawaii. Whether you're interested in the beautiful beaches, lush jungles, or vibrant culture, a 5-day all-inclusive cruise allows you to discover Hawaii's captivating beauty.

How can I find a cheap cruise to Hawaii?

The easiest way to find cheap cruises to Hawaii is to sort your search results by price to put the most affordable options like Royal Caribbean and Princess at the top of your results list. You can also keep an eye out for the green discount marker on the search result situated above the price estimate. This sorting strategy works regardless of the filters you have in place. Whether you're looking for a 3-day Hawaiian cruise from Honolulu or a 5-day Hawaiian island cruise, you can search by filtering by cruise line, ship, or length. However, the best way to find affordable options is to use minimal filters and be flexible with your dates. Whether you're looking for an affordable Maui dinner cruise or a 7-day Hawaii cruise from Florida, Expedia offers a wide range of cruises to choose from.

What are the best cruise lines to Hawaii?

We work with some of the best cruise lines to Hawaii, such as Royal Caribbean , Princess , and Norwegian . All of these cruises to Hawaii are known for their entertainment and dining experiences with live performances, fine-dining restaurants, and reliable room service. Be sure to check the details of your Hawaii cruise. Even so, most cruises offer attractions like Maui dinner cruises, Kauai boat tours, or catamarans in Waikiki. Looking for a 7-day cruise to Hawaii from San Francisco? You can use search filters in your results to only show the cruise lines that you like.

How do I find Hawaii cruise deals?

When you browse Expedia, all available deals on cruise tickets to Hawaii will be marked with green text over the estimated price on your results page. This will indicate the amount of discount you could receive on the ticket price. Be sure to keep an eye out for these deals, especially when searching for a 5-day Hawaiian islands cruise or a Hawaii cruise in December 2024, for instance. Opting for a shorter sunset cruise in Honolulu can save money while going for a longer 7-day Hawaii cruise will let you visit Honolulu, Kauai , Maui , and several other destinations to get a true taste of the mahalo lifestyle.

What should I look for to find the best Hawaii cruises?

To find the best Hawaii cruise for you, use the search filters to filter the results page. So if you're looking for a cruise that will take you across multiple islands, like a 7-day Hawaii cruise in 2024 from Los Angeles, or if you have a particular cruise line you prefer, like Royal Caribbean , Princess , or Norwegian , you can filter by duration, destination or specific cruise lines. While Hawaii is composed of over 100 islands in total, most high-quality cruises to the state focus on the four main islands: Big Island , Maui , Kauai , and Oahu . Therefore, when searching for cruises to Hawaii, it is advisable to look for ones that include visits to these islands.

What are the best Hawaii cruise destinations?

A sunset Waikiki cruise is among the most popular options, but that's only scratching the surface, as you'll also find stunning coastal cities like Hilo and Kona . Hilo and Kona are both on Hawaii's Big Island, with Hilo putting you close to towering volcanoes and Kona offering some of the best beachfront and snorkeling spots in all of Hawaii. But there's more to Hawaii than just the Big Island! With a little searching, you can find a 4-day cruise from Florida or a 7-day cruise deal that hits all 4 big islands of Hawaii: Big Island , Maui , Kauai , and Oahu .

When is the best time for a Hawaii cruise vacation?

The most popular time for a cruise to Hawaii is either spring or fall, as the weather is pleasant and dry. The summer months are dry too, but the temperatures can be high for some travelers. If you're interested in whale watching, such as on a Maui whale watch cruise from Lahaina Harbor, the winter months are your best bet for a 3-day all-inclusive cruise from San Diego or California, or a Hawaii cruise in December 2024. Be prepared for some rain, though. They are called tropical rainforest islands for a reason.

How long does it take for a cruise trip to Hawaii?

The duration of a boat cruise to Hawaii can vary depending on the departure point, but leaving from ports on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles or San Francisco, can easily result in a 7-day Hawaii cruise. Despite the duration, 7-day cruises to Hawaii from California are quite popular. You won't find any 3-night cruises to Hawaii, so if you want to arrive by boat, you best have the vacation days saved up!

Can I book a luxury cruise to Hawaii?

Luxury cruises to Hawaii are readily available from cruise lines such as Norwegian and Princess, allowing you to easily book your 7-day Hawaii cruise in 2024. Enjoy high-end amenities such as full suites with separate bedrooms that are designed to make your journey as relaxing and carefree as possible. Norwegian's Pride of America ship, for example, offers authentic Hawaiian cuisine to give you a taste of the islands even before you get there, boasting scrumptious local dishes like Kalua pork and malasadas.

What are some good all-inclusive cruises to Hawaii?

You'll find some of the best all-inclusive and 7-day cruise deals to Hawaii on the Holland America Line and Princess . When everything is paid for in advance, whether it's dinner at a fancy fine-dining restaurant on board or time at the spa, you're invited to just sit back and enjoy the wonders of these incredible islands.

How do I book a family cruise to Hawaii?

Quite a few cruise lines offer unforgettable family cruises to Hawaii with fun for all ages, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity . For example, the Ovation of the Seas ship from Royal Caribbean features fun attractions kids will love like a skydiving simulator, trapeze classes, and a bar offering nonalcoholic beverages prepared by a robot. Book a 7-day Hawaii cruise to make the most of the activities on board. Need some quiet time? No problem: just head to the Solarium, an adults-only lounge with a private pool, bar, and hot tubs.

Can I book a Hawaii honeymoon cruise?

Expedia boasts several Hawaii honeymoon cruises specifically designed for couples to get the most out of their romantic journey to the islands with a variety of cruise lines such as Norwegian and Princess . You can also choose a 7-day Hawaii cruise with Royal Caribbean. For a Hawaii cruise in 2024, the Crown Princess , in particular, is an upscale vessel with dancing at night, an adults-only sanctuary, fine dining restaurants, and several theater performances, ensuring you'll make memories that last a lifetime–after all, a Hawaii honeymoon cruise is surely one of the most romantic honeymoons possible.

How do I book a cruise to Hawaii on Expedia?

To book your Hawaii cruise on Expedia, use the various search filters to narrow down your results. Keep an eye out for discounts, noted in the search results with green text above the estimated price. If you already know what you want, you can even filter by specific ships, such as the Symphony of the Seas from Royal Caribbean . Launched in 2016, the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam is one of Holland America's newer ships and the first in the more contemporary Pinnacle Class. Passengers can participate in everything from cooking classes to duty-free shopping, or simply relax by the pool or at the spa.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Koningsdam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Guests can spend their evenings playing casino games or watching stage shows and musical acts through a partnership with "Rolling Stone" magazine. While the ship does offer youth clubs for children ages 3 to 17, most of the entertainment and activities are geared toward adults.

When hunger strikes, passengers can choose between 11 dining venues, ranging from the casual New York Pizza & Deli to the more formal Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

The ship's cabin categories are also diverse. Staterooms range from Interior and Ocean View cabins to Verandah rooms and three Suite categories.

Koningsdam departs from ports like San Diego , Seattle ,  Vancouver  and Anchorage , Alaska, for sailings through Mexico, Hawaii , Alaska and California.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The three Pinnacle Class ships (Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam) have Single and Family Staterooms. Family Staterooms accommodate up to five guests and have two bathrooms, plus extra closet space. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Carnival Miracle

Like other Carnival ships, the 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle boasts activities and entertainment geared toward travelers of all ages. Thanks to a renovation in 2020, the ship features upgrades like Guy's Burger Joint, WaterWorks, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Cantina and more. The ship also received a minor refresh to interior and exterior spaces in 2022.

Even with the added venues, a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio ensures service is a priority. And compared to other Carnival ships, Miracle offers a higher percentage of cabins with ocean views. While Interior staterooms provide more wallet-friendly digs, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category cabins offer more space and scenery. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service.

During days at sea, grown-ups can enjoy poolside lounging or the adults-only Serenity Retreat, while kids ages 2 to 17 can play at age-specific programs.  There are also entertainment options like the Punchliner Comedy Club, the SkyBox Sports Bar and the Seuss at Sea program. Once the family works up an appetite, they'll have their pick of the main dining room, the Lido buffet, a specialty steakhouse (for an extra fee) and more.

Carnival Miracle departs from Galveston, Texas ;  Los Angeles  and  San Francisco  to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal,  Hawaii , Mexico , and Alaska .

Crown Princess

Debuted in 2006 and last refurbished in April 2018, the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess features some megaship amenities like a casino, a kids clubs and a 300-square-foot poolside theater. The ship also features quiet nooks, like a library and the Sanctuary (an adults-only area that requires an extra fee). Updates for 2018 included new luxury beds in every room, new dining venues and an upgraded spa.

Past cruisers were satisfied with the ship's relaxing atmosphere, describing public areas as pleasant and rarely overcrowded. Another main selling point for previous guests is the ship's versatile dining choices. Cruisers can choose from seven eateries, including the main dining room and three informal restaurants. For specialty dining, guests can choose between Italian at Sabatini's, or steak at Crown Grill or burgers at The Salty Dog Gastropub.

In terms of lodging, 80% of Crown Princess' exterior cabins feature private balconies. All staterooms are appointed with minifridges and satellite TVs, but guests who opt for Mini-Suite and Suite cabins can enjoy extra amenities like bathtubs, multiple TVs and 57-square-foot balconies. The Reserve Collection cabins feature all the amenities of Mini-Suites, plus access to an exclusive dining venue with expanded menu options, priority boarding and a complimentary one-time wine setup. What's more, each guest aboard Crown Princess now receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Crown Princess cruises through Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Australia, Mexico and the California coast.

Pride of America

Refurbished in 2022, Pride of America is Norwegian's only ship that offers year-round sailings in Hawaii. As such, it is home to a hands-on learning center about the history of Hawaii. The ship also represents other famous USA sights with themed areas like the South Beach Pool (based on Miami Beach).

The ship caters to a diverse set of age groups; it offers youth-oriented programs for guests ages 3 to 17, as well as more adult-friendly pursuits like a golf driving net, the Mandara Spa and the Shuffles Card Room.

Pride of America's cabins also appeal to a wide range of travelers, from the Studio staterooms for solo travelers (which include exclusive access to the Studio Lounge) to Inside, Oceanview, Balcony and Suite category cabins for groups. Hawaii cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Hawaii and cruising seem like a match made in heaven. You can experience all the beaches, water sports, lush scenic areas and Polynesian culture without having to settle for just one island — or deal with the hassle of flying between them.

In addition, you get a convenient home base to leave your stuff, enjoy evening entertainment without a drive and linger over dinner without worrying how much the bill will come to.

However, it's not all paradise in the Hawaii cruise world because itineraries are limited. Why? U.S. government regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships from sailing between U.S. ports without visiting a foreign port.

Because most cruise ships are flagged in another country, they cannot offer interisland cruises. Only two lines currently offer those. The rest must sail long cruises at least one-way, if not round trip, from the west coast of North America.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If a Hawaii cruise sounds like the perfect getaway to you, you'll want to read up on which lines offer which types of itineraries, as well as which islands and ports you must visit.

Here, we've gathered all the information you need to know to choose the perfect Aloha State sailing for your travel style, budget and allotted vacation time.

Why cruise to Hawaii?

cruise new york to hawaii

I probably don't need to convince anyone why Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. It has everything — gorgeous beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving spots, scenic hiking trails, fascinating local culture and history, delicious cuisine, renowned resorts and golf courses, and plentiful waterfalls and rainbows.

Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land? The main reason is to sample more islands.

Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship.

Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar.

On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port, but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare.

When do cruises go to Hawaii?

cruise new york to hawaii

You can sail to Hawaii year-round, but the itinerary options vary based on the month you choose. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only major cruise line to offer year-round, weeklong cruises.

If you're looking for a longer itinerary, sailing round trip from the west coast of North America, or a small-ship adventure cruise, you'll have the biggest selection of cruises between October and April.

The beginning and end of the Alaska season in the spring and fall is when you'll find one-way repositioning cruises either between Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia, or Seattle, or from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the South Pacific, stopping in Hawaii along the way.

The summer offers the fewest Hawaii cruise options.

Best Hawaii itineraries

cruise new york to hawaii

Cruises to Hawaii fall into three categories: weeklong interisland cruises, round-trip cruises sailing to/from the West Coast and one-way repositioning cruises.

The best cruise for you depends on how much vacation time you have, how many islands you want to visit, whether you're looking for overnight port stays and how you feel about multiple sea days in a row.

Interisland cruises

The best Hawaii itinerary in my opinion is Norwegian Cruise Line's seven-night round-trip Honolulu sailings on Pride of America. The U.S.-flagged ship is the only big ship able to sail interisland itineraries without calling on a foreign port.

The itinerary features two-day overnight visits to Maui and Kauai and stops in both Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, as well as scenic cruising along Kauai's famed Napali Coast. It's easy to book pre- or post-cruise stays in Honolulu to explore places like Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead Crater and Pearl Harbor.

For a completely different interisland cruise, UnCruise Adventures offers a more off-the-beaten-path, adventure-focused sailing on the 36-passenger Safari Explorer.

It also visits Maui and the island of Hawaii, as well as the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. Expect lots of water sports and nature-based outings, and daily plans that can change due to the weather or a whale sighting. These expedition cruises run from November to April.

Round-trip Hawaii cruises from the West Coast

Most of the major cruise lines offering seasonal Hawaii cruises — such as Carnival, Princess and Holland America — offer 14- to 18-night round-trip itineraries from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco, in California; Seattle; and Vancouver. These sailings run from the fall into the spring. Some lines offer just a few round trips while others offer months of Hawaii cruises.

The itineraries all follow a similar pattern: A four-day Pacific Ocean crossing, daily port stops in three or four Hawaii ports (occasionally with an overnight), another five days at sea, then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, on the way home. If you're sailing from Vancouver, expect five days for the crossing and no visit to Mexico.

You may find some longer grand voyages sailing round trip from North America to Hawaii plus other South Pacific destinations. For example, Holland America offers some epic 35- to 51-night cruises round trip from San Diego

These Hawaii cruises are best for retirees, who have the time to enjoy leisurely ocean crossings on either end of the trip.

Repositioning cruises

The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. The cruise line schedules these sailings to swing by Hawaii on their way to the South Pacific or Australia or perhaps before the ship begins Mexico cruises from southern California or transits the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.

The shorter options, such as 10- and 11-night Hawaii cruises offered by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, sail between Vancouver and Honolulu, leaving you to book a one-way flight to or from Hawaii. Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania, Seabourn and Silversea, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle.

The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. They also allow pre- or post-cruise stays in Hawaii. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive.

Best Hawaii cruise lines

It's no surprise that I find Norwegian Cruise Line to be one of the best Hawaii cruise lines because it offers a unique product that's a reasonable vacation length for most people and really allows its guests to experience many of Hawaii's highlights.

Princess Cruises is definitely the leader in the two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruise department, offering more sailings out of more homeports than any other line. Carnival , Holland America and Viking also offer this type of sailing, but not as frequently. Holland America is a great choice for round-trip sailings that explore deep into the South Pacific.

Sister lines Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean are good bets for those hybrid one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii.

Seabourn , Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way. Seabourn and Silversea feature smaller ships, more fare inclusions and higher prices than Oceania.

UnCruise Adventures is the line for travelers who want to get off the beaten path on a small ship with a flexible itinerary. These sailings are perfect for active folks who want to get up close to nature. You don't have to be a true cruiser to love UnCruise, but you do need a large budget, as intimate adventures don't come cheap.

Things to do in Hawaii

cruise new york to hawaii

Whether you're looking for utter relaxation or an adrenaline rush, you'll find plenty of things to do in Hawaii. The islands have much to offer families, couples and friends of all ages.

Obviously, a top attraction is Hawaii's many beaches. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming.

Water sports are also a big draw, whether that's surfing Hawaii's waves or snorkeling with green turtles in Maui. Kayak out to sea or along Kauai's Wailua River, or try your hand at kite-surfing or stand-up paddleboarding. For a more chill afternoon out on the waves, consider a whale-watching cruise, sunset sail or scenic boat ride along the Napali Coast.

Nature lovers can find a variety of hikes within lush green forests or along the rocky landscape of the Waimea Canyon. Maui's road to Hana is a must-do if you like twisty roads and cascading waterfalls. Watch the sun rise or set, bike down the extinct Haleakala volcano, or visit a live one at Volcanoes National Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

Many travelers enjoy learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Attend a luau where you can feast on Hawaiian cuisine and enjoy music, dancing and fire play. Some take place on plantations where you can discover more about local agriculture. Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's city of refuge, to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Best Hawaii cruise ports

cruise new york to hawaii

The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places that the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Certainly, some ports are better for different types of activities.

The following Hawaii ports are the ones commonly found on cruise itineraries.

Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is known for Pearl Harbor, where you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial Museum, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, a submarine museum and an aviation museum. Cruisers can catch some rays at Waikiki Beach or hike the Diamond Head crater.

Learn about Hawaiian history at the Mauna 'Ala royal mausoleum and the Iolani Palace, or Hawaiian culture at a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. You can also take a tour to Oahu's North Shore. Oahu is the turn-around port for Pride of America, so travelers should consider a pre- or post-cruise stay to see the sights.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

The small but mighty Kauai is one of the best Hawaii ports for outdoor, nature-based adventure. Get your cameras out for the rocky landscapes of the Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking cliffs of the Napali Coast. If you like hiking or kayaking, you've come to the right island, but you can also take it easy on any number of nearby beaches.

Take a riverboat along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, or hop a tour bus to see where many of your favorite movies were filmed. It's also a good spot for a luau if your ship stays in port late enough.

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island is the only island offering two major ports for cruise ships: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west. Hilo is the jumping-off point to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike through a lava tube or watch steam venting from the still-active volcano.

The area is also home to numerous waterfalls you can visit, such as Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls, as well as black-sand beaches. Kayak or snorkel in Hilo Bay, or — for something different — visit the Volcano Winery to sample vintages made both with grapes and local fruits.

Related: How to choose the best Hawaiian island for you

Kona, Hawaii

The second cruise port on the island of Hawaii, Kona is one of the best ports for visiting a coffee plantation and sampling local Hawaiian coffee. For travelers more interested in ancient Polynesian history, the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, the site of an old city of refuge, is a fascinating place to visit. Otherwise, Kona offers plenty of beaches, snorkeling opportunities and boat and submarine tours.

Lahaina or Kahului, Maui

Maui also has two cruise ports, but they serve the same area and attractions. The difference is that Kahului is in an industrial area near the airport. Cruise ships dock there, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights.

Lahaina is a major tourist destination for its restaurants, shops and boat tours, but ships must anchor and transport passengers to shore via tender boats.

Must-sees on Maui include the extinct volcano Haleakala (for sunset or sunrise visits or bike rides down the steep slopes), the twisty road to Hana with its waterfall views and many gorgeous white-sand beaches. Maui is the best Hawaii cruise port for whale watching in season or snorkeling in its clear waters. Visit the Maui Ocean Center to check out more sea life while staying dry.

When to book a Hawaii cruise

cruise new york to hawaii

The earlier you book a Hawaii cruise, the better. That's because the cruise lines offer comparatively few Hawaii sailings as compared to Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, for example.

Norwegian Cruise Line bases only one ship in the region; other lines only sail to the islands seasonally. Booking early will not only guarantee you get the cabin type you want on the sail date you prefer, but may also get you the lowest prices and promotional booking bonuses (i.e. free stuff). In addition, unless you live on the West Coast, a Hawaii cruise will require a long flight either to California or Honolulu, so you'll want plenty of time to find an airfare deal or available award seat.

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise

cruise new york to hawaii

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise depends on which cruise you're taking. If you're on a weeklong sailing on casual NCL, you can skip the dressy clothes and prioritize casual outfits that work with whatever beachy or sporty excursions you've got planned in Hawaii. Sun hats, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and water-friendly shoes are all must-pack items. Don't forget your camera (or waterproof case for your cellphone) and binoculars for whale watching.

Travelers on a longer Hawaii sailing on a line like Princess will want to bring nicer clothes for dinners on board, as well as plenty of activities for all those sea days. That could include books or an e-reader, a packable board game, a knitting project or a journal. UnCruise passengers should pack hiking boots, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, plenty of swimsuits and waterproof bags to protect their gear.

Bottom line

A cruise can be an ideal way to explore multiple Hawaiian islands in one trip and save on costs such as dinner and car rentals.

However, unlike in other cruise regions, travelers are limited in the itineraries and times of the year they can sail. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a great way to visit the islands in just a week, but fans of leisurely trips with lots of sea days should look at round-trip cruises from California.

Once you've decided how you want to cruise Hawaii, you can seek out the best cruise fares so you're ready to say "Aloha!" to an incredible vacation when the right deal pops up.

Cruises to Hawaii

Americans don’t need a passport to enjoy Polynesian perfection. All you need to do is hop aboard a Hawaii-bound boat and get ready for a laid-back lu’au.

OK, it might be more convenient to fly into Honolulu, but what’s the fun in that? Cruising to Hawaii has many advantages, most notably price. Instead of spending a fortune on airfare, hotels, and eating out, cruises take care of all your dining, transportation, and lodging needs. As a bonus, cruise passengers get to visit more islands than most people see on land vacations.

But before we touch our toes in Hawaii’s brilliant black sand, let’s first figure out where to board our vessel.

Where Do Hawaiian Cruises Begin?

Most big cities along America’s West Coast now offer cruise packages to the Hawaiian Islands. Whether you want to depart from San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, or Seattle, you should find a Hawaii-bound vessel ready to sail you away. Vancouver also offers a few cruises to Hawaii for those who don’t mind crossing into Canada.

One thing to keep in mind when booking a Hawaiian cruise is whether your company has a foreign flag. Interestingly, foreign-flagged cruise lines cannot legally sail to Hawaii from the US mainland unless they make one stop in a foreign country.

Every company that offers Hawaiian cruises has their sneaky ways of getting over this rule, but a common practice is to return to Ensenada. Of course, if your ship departs from Vancouver, that’s also an easy way to fulfill the international requirements.

How Long Does a Hawaii Cruise Last?

The duration of your Hawaiian cruise depends on where you’re starting your journey. If you’re sailing from the American West Coast, it will take longer to get to your Hawaiian ports of call. Indeed, most cruise ships from California or Washington don’t arrive in Hawaii for at least five days.

Therefore, if you’re booking a Hawaiian cruise from a West Coast port, you should expect your voyage to last a minimum of two weeks. You could cut that duration in half if you board a vessel in Honolulu, but you’ll have to factor in additional airfare costs.

What Are Hawaii’s Main Ports Of Call?

Although Hawaii consists of eight major islands, most cruise vessels only visit the following locations:

  • O’ahu
  • The Big Island

Let’s take a closer look at the ports of call and major attractions on each of these islands.

O’ahu – Popular & Populous

Of all the Hawaiian Islands, O’ahu is by far the most densely populated. Indeed, the word “O’ahu” roughly translates to “The Gathering Place.” The reason this tiny island has so many people is simple: it’s home to the capital Honolulu.

Anyone who loves shopping, dining, and entertainment will find plenty to do when docked in Honolulu. But it’s not all fun and games in this big city. Indeed, as Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu has many of the nation’s most significant historical attractions. Tourists often visit either Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum or `Iolani Palace while in Honolulu.

Other popular activities include sun-bathing on Waikiki Beach and climbing to the top of the dormant Diamond Head Crater.

The Big Island – Mighty Kilauea & Kona Coffee

True to its name, Hawaii’s Big Island is the largest island in the state’s archipelago. Because this island is so big, cruise vessels could dock in one of two cities: Kona or Hilo.

Nature enthusiasts will prefer disembarking at Hilo, which grants guests easy access to the vast Volcanoes National Park. Measuring 323,431 acres, this nationally-protected park is best known for its active volcano: Kilauea. If you’d like to explore all of Volcanoes National Park without breaking a sweat, consider booking a helicopter excursion while in town.

If you’re docking in Kona, get ready for some of the best coffee you’ve ever tasted in your life. Kona is known throughout the world for its delicious coffee beans, and plantations in the area are more than happy to take you on a tour. After you’ve had your caffeine fix, consider taking advantage of Kona’s outdoor activities like snorkeling, diving, and surfing.

Maui – Breathtaking Beaches & Wonderful Whale-Watching

Sometimes called “The Valley Isle,” Maui has a marvelous reputation in the beach enthusiast community. Indeed, it seems like every year Maui tops the rankings for the best beaches in the world.

If your cruise ship docks in Maui, you’ll likely stay in the western town of Lahaina. Although there are many shops, museums, and restaurants in Lahaina proper, most tourists head straight to the legendary Kaanapali Beach. Those who are visiting in the winter might also get the opportunity to go on an unforgettable whale-watching expedition.

Kauai – An Outdoor Enthusiast’s Dream Destination

Known as “The Garden Isle,” Kauai is a northwestern island that doesn’t get as much press as the three listed above. However, as more nature enthusiasts learn about Kauai’s untouched beauty, it’s steadily becoming a hotspot for eco-tourism excursions.

One of the most popular attractions people visit while on Kauai is the Waimea Canyon, which is just as awe-inspiring as Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Film fans can also relive the magic of Jurassic Park on a helicopter ride through the gorgeous Na Pali Coast. Other jaw-dropping attractions in Kauai include the Wailua Falls, Poipu Beach, and Limahuli Garden.

What’s The Best Time to Visit Hawaii?

Hawaii’s peak tourist season lasts from December to April as snow-sick tourists flock to the Aloha State’s sunny shores. Many people also like to visit in winter to go whale-watching in Maui or take advantage of gnarly surfing conditions.

Although winter is the most popular time to visit, you can usually find better deals in mid-spring and early autumn. As a bonus, many people believe Hawaii has ideal weather conditions (i.e., mild temps and low rain) during these shoulder seasons.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You’ll find Norwegian ships everywhere, from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Related: The ultimate Alaska cruise guide

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.
