Amber cove shore excursions to the dominican republic.

Amber Cove is located on the Dominican Republic's north coast (Caribbean Sea), just outside of Puerto Plata. Puerto Plata is a historical town discovered by Christopher Columbus. Amber Cove encompasses 30 acres of waterfront property and the port was named "Amber Cove" after the rich amber mineral reserves found in the region.

Damajagua Waterfalls

Experience an eco-adventure like no other. Damajagua, or "27 Charcos" (27 Pools), is a hidden treasure nestled in the rolling hills of the Northern Corridor mountain range. Completely immerse yourself within this tropical rainforest that offers captivating views and some epic waterslides. Or, ditch the waterslides and jump down to get back to basecamp. Just be careful - waterfall jumps can be up to 25 feet high!

Watersports Galore

There are several beaches worth checking out near the cruise terminal, from Playa Dorada to Grande. Get wet and wild with all the watersport activities Amber Cove has to offer. You can rent many different types of equipment, such as stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, hydro-bikes, pedal boats, and solar catamarans. Snorkeling and scuba diving equipment rentals are also available. Prefer to stay dry? Book a deep-sea fishing charter boat instead.

Explore Puerto Plata

Hike your way up or hop on the only cable car to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres, located in the city of Puerto Plata, and just a quick 20-minute car ride from Amber Cove. The summit is 2,555 feet above sea level and offers prime Puerto Plata sightseeing. Once at the peak, hike the beautiful botanical gardens filled with local flora and caves, or get some photos of the Christ the Redeemer Statue (a smaller version of the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Ocean World Adventure Park is located in Puerto Plata too. It's a must-see attraction if you're in the Dominican Republic. Here you can have close encounters with dolphins, sea lions, and sharks that kids will surely enjoy. Adults can keep the fun going at night. With the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop, Ocean World also offers an entertaining nightlife option for grown-ups. There are a ton of things to do inland as well, from cigar factory tours to local marketplace shopping. Again, there is simply too much to list. But that is what makes Amber Cove a great vacation destination. Shore Excursions offers nothing but the best excursions and tours in the Caribbean and beyond! Make the most of your cruise ship experience with us.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Description.

Tucked on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Amber Cove, named for the translucent gemstone found on its shores, sits just seven miles from the town Puerto Plata, a cinematic locale used as the backdrop for the first Jurassic Park film. Just steps from the dock take in the sparkling beach, which offers a plethora of water activities, and the serene, natural beauty from the comfort of a private bungalow. Or venture off the property to take to the high seas on a luxury catamaran snorkeling expedition or explore the 450-year-old San Felipe Fortress. For high-flying adventure, swing through the trees on a zip line or ride a cable car 2,500 feet to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres for a look at its massive statue of Christ the Redeemer. And for those with a forward-thinking approach to social activism, delve into the culture and traditions of the friendly Dominican people while giving back to the community and making an impact on their lives. Amber Cove on a Cruise: Things to Do, Prices, Map, and More

Headed to the eastern Caribbean on a Carnival or Princess cruise? Chances are that it may include a stop in a port known as Amber Cove.

Amber Cove sign with a ship behind it.

This port — located about six miles west of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic — is a dedicated area for passengers of Carnival Corporation ships. So if you’re sailing a Carnival brand and headed to the area, then this is where you’ll stop.

You can think of Amber Cove much like a private island, only it is still part of the mainland. But here you’ll find all kinds of amenities for cruise passengers, from a pool area to shopping to restaurants. And while it is a jumping off point for seeing Puerto Plata, the truth is that you could spend all day inside the port area if you wanted and have plenty of fun.

So what exactly is there to see, do, and know about Amber Cove? We recently visited to give you all the ins and outs about the spot.

Location & Layout of Amber Cove

Map showing location of cruise ports in Puerto Plata

First things first, it’s nice to get a lay of the land with the port, its location, and what’s around.

Amber Cove sits in a small inlet, about 10-15 minutes by taxi from Puerto Plata. Around the port there is very little, although there is a resort right next door. Apart from that, it’s largely open space with hills and pastures. As a result, if you want to go anywhere outside the port, you’ll need some sort of transportation. Walking outside the port isn’t really feasible.

As for the layout of the port area itself, it’s fairly easy to navigate. First, your ship will dock at the pier, and then it’s a short walk to Amber Cove. You enter through the duty-free store. Once through, straight ahead will be the meeting points for booked shore excursions. To the left are a number of restaurants, shops, and the way to exit the port and grab a taxi. To the right is the “Aqua Zone” that’s complete with a huge pool, waterslide, cabanas, and much more (more on this below).

You can get an idea of the layout via the map below:

What Is There to Do at Amber Cove?

This port area is custom made to entertain cruise passengers. In many ways you can think of it as an extension of the cruise ship. Below we cover all the things to do in port. If you plan to go explore nearby Puerto Plata, then we have a complete guide of things to do here .

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

Need a souvenir? Or maybe to pick up something from the pharmacy? Or jewelry? Or alcohol? No matter what’s on your shopping list, there will be a store in Amber Cove that sells it. The shopping area takes up one entire side of the port, giving you plenty of options to choose.

Get a Picture in Front of the Ship

As you get off the ship, take a left and then head to the end of the port area. At the far corner of the port is a perfect spot to get a picture in front of your ship. There, you’ll find a large display writing out “AMBER COVE!” with a spot in the middle that shows the ship perfectly. Step up and get a souvenir photo to remember your trip.

Grab Something to Eat

Want to eat? Remember that you can just head the short walk back to the ship and eat for free, or you can grab a bite in port. There are a couple of sit-down restaurants serving casual fare. One is right by the pool and the other at the opposite end of the port near the “AMBER COVE!” sign. There’s also a Nathan’s hot dog trailer by the pool. Just know that unlike some private ports, the food isn’t free here. You’ll have to pay out of pocket.

Enjoy a Drink (or Three)

What would a Caribbean port be without something to drink? There are bar stations around the pool, as well as the large Coco Cana (a restaurant by the pool with a swim-up bar) serving libations. But perhaps the coolest place to have a drink is Sky Bar — a bar sitting on a hill that overlooks the port and offers cool views of the ship and surrounding area.

Hit the Pool

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

If you’re going to stay in port, then by far the big attraction is the pool area. The pool here is large, with tons of loungers all around. It’s broken into different areas that are connected with bridges so even though it can be busy, it can still make the spots seem more private. The main portion of the pool near the swim-up bar gets pretty lively. Head around from there and you can find a calmer vibe.

Try the Waterslide

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

One fun feature is a pair of waterslides that circle around near the edge of the pool. The twin slides spin around several times before dumping you into a dedicated splash pool. The entrance can be a little hidden, but it’s along the back of the port area and up a hill. You’ll be able to see the slides from the pool — just head over to figure out where to go. There is a 230 pound weight limit, and you must be at least 4 feet tall to ride.

Sail Across the Port on a Zipline

Head to the pool area, and you’ll likely hear the zipline before you actually see it. The lengthy run heads straight over the entire pool area, letting out a high-pitched whine as people go over. The cost is $28 for unlimited rides while you are in port.

Live it Up in a Cabana

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

To be sure the port area can get busy. When we visited, two of Carnival’s largest ships were in port, making it crowded. If you want a little more elbow room, then there are cabanas that you rent out. There’s a group of them that sit out over the bay and others that sit overlooking the pool. Rates start at $340 per day and most are in this range, except for the Grand Cabana, which runs a pricey $1,170.

Kids Water Park

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

Are you sailing with little ones (about five years or younger)? If so, then there is a splash area designed for smaller kids. It features a small slide, a tree that sprays water, and a large fish that kids can climb in. If you have kids that aren’t ready for the pool, it’s a fun spot for them to get wet and enjoy themselves.

Feeling a little more active? If you want to shoot some hoops, there is a basketball area. It’s located at the far end of the port, past the pool and the kid water park. It’s not much — just a hoop and a half-court area, but it’s a fun option if you want to do something other than lounge by the pool.

Kayak/Pedal Boat/Paddleboards

If you want to get out on the water, then there are plenty of rentals to choose from. Cruisers visiting Amber Cove have the option of renting kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and more. The fees are a bit steep — starting around $35 per hour — but some of those can be split by multiple people such as the pedal boats that carry four. Half-hour rentals are also available.

Price List for Amber Cove

We’ve mentioned several things to do that come with an extra charge. Below is the pricing from a recent visit to give you an idea of what things cost.

Tips & Things to Know

Before you visit, there are definitely some things to know about the port that will make your trip go smoother.

Taxis are Expensive

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

Amber Cove sits about six miles away from Puerto Plata. You’d think that getting back and forth would be cheap, but think again. Taxi rates from the port to town are sky-high, costing $70 round trip according to the rates seen posted. With that in mind, it’s likely worth it to book an excursion instead if you want to go to town, which will include transportation.

There’s a Charge for Most Extras in the Pool Area

If you want to spend the day at the pool, access is free, as are loungers. Most other things will cost money. Everything from umbrellas to pool floats to lockers cost extra, as do certain “VIP” areas. You can see a list of the charges in the “Price List” section above.

Drink Packages/Wi-Fi Don’t Work in Port

While Amber Cove might have the vibe of a private cruise line island, it’s actually not. And that means unlike some private islands where drink packages and wi-fi service bought on the ship also extend to the port, it’s not the case here. Instead, if you want to drink then you’ll have to pay bar prices. And wi-fi service is available in the port area for $8 per day.

Free Wi-Fi at Stores

cruise excursions amber cove dominican republic

As we just said, the wi-fi from the ship doesn’t work in port. And while you can pay the $8 for all-day access while visiting, there is also a free option. Check out the stores in Amber Cove. You’ll find that some offer free wi-fi access as an incentive for you to visit the shop. It can give you the opportunity to check in back home if you only need the Internet for a short bit.

Check Out the Sky Bar for Great Views

If you want the best view in Amber Cove, then check out a spot called Sky Bar. It sits at the top of a hill that overlooks the port. You can’t miss the large white-roofed structure that’s visible from nearly everywhere. Head up here for a tropical drink and a unique spot to relax while in port.

Be Sure to Bring a Towel From the Ship

Spending the day at the pool? If so, you’ll want to be sure to bring a beach towel from the ship. All cruise ships offer towels to passengers (typically there is a station by the pool). You can bring these into port with you. There are no towels available in the port, so if you forget yours, then you’ll have to air-dry.

Be Early or Be Late to the Pool

Obviously the pool area is a big draw at Amber Cove, and during the peak of the day (between around 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) it can get pretty crowded if you are in port with large ships. If you are the only ship docked, then it’s not as big a deal. But if there are multiple ships, then it’s smart to arrive early to stake out a prime spot. As well, going later in the afternoon also sees smaller crowds as many head back to the ship despite all aboard not usually being until the evening.

I have friends coming in on 10 May for a stop at Amber Cove. I would like to bring wife and myself from Moca, to meet up and visit once they disembark. They say they are there from 0900 to 5 PM. Is there any problem getting in to visit. I don’t suppose there is accommodations if we want to come over and stay the night of the 9th of May so as to be nice and fresh when they arrive… thanks

Yes, only cruise passengers and employees are allowed in the Amber Cove port area. You will need to meet up in Puerto Plata.

coming in on cruise, want to go to sosua beach. just two of us. any chance of getting a group together so it will not be so expensive?

You can always ask around, but I’d consider it doubtful. Best bet is to make some friends on the ship before the port of call and then invite them to see if they’d want to go.

It was $60 round trip for us. You can bring the taxis down in price. You can bargain anywhere, never pay full price.

Diamond International is located at Amber Cove. DI is the largest duty-free jeweler globally and does 99% of its business with travelers on cruise ships. It is a privately owned company with over 130 stores throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States.

While Diamonds International has quality products, some feel their stores take away from local products and lack any cultural relevance.

If you are looking for something more authentic, there are numerous local shops located around the Cruise Center in a colonial-style plaza. The Mercado houses numerous stalls where local vendors sell souvenirs and crafts. There are also vendor stalls along the promenade by the bay.

While in Amber Cove, you might want to consider these items that are local to the Dominican Republic:

Amber Gemstones or Fossils

In Amber Cove, you will see the honey-colored gemstones and a more coveted blue variety of amber that are made into jewelry and art objects. Some amber will contain fossilized insects and come from the region’s amber mines.

Hand-Rolled Cigars

Cigars from the Dominican Republic are much sought-after. These cigars are renowned for being well-crafted, tightly rolled, and uniquely flavored. Premium hand-rolled cigars range in both flavors and strengths. They are sold at several shops in the Cove.

A staple in the Dominican, coffee, referred to as Santo Domingo, is best known for its Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties. Arabica is milder and the Robusta, as its name suggests, has a more robust flavor. The coffee is sold in bags ideal for bringing it back with you.

Faceless Dolls

A Dominican artist first created these colorful dolls in 1981. They have now become a signature souvenir for travelers. They are typically crafted from red clay, porcelain, or plaster and painted bright, vibrant colors. If the idea of their facelessness is off-putting to you, think about the Willow Tree figurines in the USA. Those figures don’t sport any facial features either.

This drink is popular in the Dominican Republic and is a mixture of rum, red wine, honey, tree bark, and a blend of herbs. The locals believe that MamaJuana is both an aphrodisiac and a healing agent. Making it easy to travel with, MamaJuana comes in a dry mix.

Mahogany Wood Carvings

The national tree of the Dominican Republic, mahogany, is incorporated into the carvings of local artisans. Mahogany wood carvings are available in different shops and may depict animals, people, or significant cultural objects.

“Casual Elegance” will require dress shirts with sleeves, no flip flops, and long pants for men. “Formal” will mean long pants and collar shirts for men, along with dress shoes. For women, blouses, skirts, slacks for dresses along with dress shoes.

Tipping: Restaurants will usually include a 10% tip on the bill, but inquire if you have any doubts. Taxis are not usually tipped. The locals who operate the free carts at the Cruise Center always appreciate a tip for good service.

Dominican foods combine Spanish, African, Taino, and Middle Eastern flavors.

Here are some dishes you might want to try when you are in Amber Cove to get a sense of the Dominican Republic cuisine.

Mangu: This is a staple that you will find in many food stalls, cafes, and restaurants. It is made from boiled and mashed plantains topped with sauteed red onions. It is often served with eggs, salami, and fried cheese. You will also see mangu under the name of “Los Tres Golpes,” or The Three Strikes.

Dulce de Coco: This creamy pudding-like dessert is made with coconut and milk. This dish is both nutritious and as tropical as you can get.

Quipe: You will find Middle Eastern influences in quipe (or kipe). Derived from the popular Lebanese dish kibbeh, this Dominican version is deep-fried balls of bulgur wheat. They will often be filled with onions and seasoned beef or lamb and eaten as finger food or appetizer.

Sancocho: Often found in Latin American countries, the Dominican variation of sancocho is a thick soup that might include up to seven different types of meat. It can consist of pork, beef, and chicken that has been stewed with various local vegetables like plantains and yucca.

La Bandera: In the Dominican Republic, La Bandera (“flag” in Spanish), is a common dish of white rice, stewed beans, and roasted meat. Both filling and delicious, it also goes by the name of “Arroz, Habichuelas y Carne, or la Comida.”

Asopao: Another rice dish, this Creole-influenced recipe, is served throughout the Caribbean. This thick rice porridge is made with chicken or shrimp seasoned with pumpkin, chili peppers, cilantro, and orange.

Things To Do in Amber Cove (Puerto Plata) Dominican Republic

The waterfront welcome center has shopping venues, restaurants, bars, the Aqua Zone recreational area with a pool, splash zone, and green spaces. Be aware that there is no beach in the Cove itself.

You won’t find cultural or historical attractions in Amber Cove like you might expect in other Caribbean ports, as this is a privately developed port. Amber Cove is an example of a cruise line that has developed its own port that provides attractions to encourage its passengers to stay on the site or at least nearby.

To that end, you can walk through the duty-free shop and take the cobblestone path that will lead you to a resort-style pool, bar, and activity area. There is an open-air restaurant so that you will be able to experience the Caribbean ocean breeze while you dine.

The water area comprises three pools that are connected by river-type waterways. Each water bath has a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the water below. The largest of the three pools has a swim-up bar that is very popular.

A splash pad with a splash bucket and mini slide is great for little ones to enjoy. Next to the splash pad is a half basketball court and a giant chess set.

Puerto Plata is the kiteboarding and windsurfing capital of the Caribbean, so this would be an excellent place to try your skills. The waterslides and zip lines will probably appeal to you if you are on the more adventurous side.

You will also be able to rent water sports equipment such as paddleboards, hydro bikes, kayaks, and boat cycles.

If you prefer to have some private time, there are four types of Cabanas that are available for rent. Choose from Ocean, Poolside, Hillside, and Grand Cabanas.

World Heritage Sites Shirakawago & Gokayama

Kanazawa, japan.

Duration 7 1/2 hrs

Behold the architecture in two isolated villages that UNESCO found so unusual that it deemed them World Heritage sites. The villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama are in the remote Shogawa River Valley surrounded by high rugged mountains, a location that made them difficult to access for centuries.

To cope with the abundance of snow that falls there, the residents constructed farmhouses with steeply pitched thatched roofs to reduce the amount of snow that accumulates on them. The roof design also allows for large attics, in which the residents rear silkworms, which they feed leaves from the surrounding mulberry trees. Only one other nearby village boasts this type of architecture, known as gassho-zukuri, a style that means “constructed like hands in prayer.”

Following free time in both villages, you will watch a demonstration of paper-making in Gokayama. The specialized washi paper is exceptionally colorful and patterned. The fiber for it comes from mulberry trees.

Discovering new sights is one of the beauties of travel, and that couldn't be more true when it comes to Amber Cove®, Dominican Republic. In this world full of information on just about everything, Amber Cove is a throwback — it’s the kind of quiet little spot you won’t find on most maps. But you will find it — brimming with bars and pools, plus opportunities for lounging and shopping — to be the gateway to island paradise, Dominican-style. Beyond Amber Cove is Puerto Plata, a town that began life as the first European settlement in the Americas. Its founder? Oh, just a guy named Christopher Columbus… so you know that arriving by sea is the ultimate way to get here. Whether you're looking for a day at the beach, some Dominican Republic adventure or just a little poolside me-time, Amber Cove is just the ticket.

  • Explore Fort San Felipe, originally built to ward off pirates, which today welcomes curious travelers of all kinds.
  • This spot is known for its remarkable local amber — actually the clearest you’ll find anywhere in the world.
  • Take a ride on the wild side on an amazing ATV Adventure tour through the undiscovered Dominican Republic backcountry!
  • Swim with dolphins, stingrays — and yes, even sharks! — at Ocean World.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic

Located on the Dominican Republic's north coast, the port of Amber Cove, near Puerto Plata, is a new phenomenon. Built in 2015, the area was fashioned as an homage to the country’s colonial architecture and features restaurants, bars and shops, as well as an activity center, a pool and cabanas. But it’s the neighboring region, known as the Amber Coast for its plethora of the semiprecious stone, that’s this port’s true draw. Along with golden-sand beaches and dramatic cliffs, there's the city of Puerto Plata, one of the Caribbean’s oldest, founded in the early 1500s. Another nearby option is Santiago de los Caballeros, known locally as simply Santiago, about an hour's drive from the port. The second-largest city in the Dominican Republic, it is home to excellent museums, historic buildings and cigar and rum makers.

Essential Guide to the Puerto Plata Cruise Terminal

I ’ve been on over 20 cruises, and over that time, I’ve visited numerous Caribbean, Bahamian, American, and Canadian ports. But up until recently, I’d never had a cruise stop in the Dominican Republic. So, when I booked my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, I was excited to stop at the Puerto Plata cruise terminal on our Dominican Daze itinerary. Our cruise shopped at the new port in the area – the Taino Bay Port.

While I was only there for a day, I found Puerto Plata to be absolutely beautiful with delicious food and great people. I definitely want to return to spend more time in the areas I quickly saw.

Disclosure: I paid for my own trip and excursion in Puerto Plata. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Location of Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is located on the northern Atlantic Coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola (which is shared with Haiti). It’s west of Puerto Rico and south of Turks and Caicos.

The third largest city in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is located about 5 hours from the country’s capital Santo Domingo, and is on the north coast.

Unlike Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is not a US territory. Therefore, passports are required if you are flying in. You’ll need to check directly with your cruise line to see what form of ID they require. I always cruise with my passport just in case I have a medical emergency and need to be evacuated.

The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean hurricane belt. If you are cruising during hurricane season, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. There’s always a risk your cruise will be re-routed due to a storm.

If booking Puerto Plata excursions during your cruise, it’s a good idea to book them through the cruise line. That way, if they are canceled, you’ll be reimbursed.

Taino Bay Puerto Plata

Taino Bay Cruise Port is the newest cruise port I’ve ever visited – opening in December 2021 . It was originally the Puerto Plata cargo port and is located right in the center of the action. Many, but not all, of the cruise ships visiting Puerto Plata dock at the Taino Bay cruise port.

If you don’t want to book an excursion or leave the cruise port area, there’s still plenty to do right there. In fact, I’d recommend booking a later or early-ending cruise excursion so you have some time to explore the cruise port before sailing away.

Amenities and Activities at Taino Bay

Here’s some of what you’ll find right in the cruise port. Cruise travelers can spend the day in the Puerto Plata cruise port if you’d prefer not to leave.

A huge pool/lazy river: This is free for guests and a great option to cool off if you want to leave the ship but don’t plan to do a shore excursion in Puerto Plata. Some of the cruise staff on our ship were raving about the lazy river, but we didn’t have a chance to try it.

Shops: Want to do some souvenir shopping in Puerto Plata? The Puerto Plata cruise port offers several specialty shops including jewelry stores (where you’ll find Larimar, exclusive to the Dominican Republic), duty-free shops, souvenir shops, and clothing shops. These are all relatively small, but there’s a good selection of them.

Experiences: There are six aviaries scattered throughout the port. Exotic birds, including Macaw Parrots and the native Amazona Ventralis, can be found in these aviaries.

There’s also Monkey Island , located right in the port. In this hands-on experience, you can interact with and feed adorable squirrel monkeys. This is something you are typically able to just walk up to – you won’t need to book an excursion because you won’t be leaving the port.

Restaurants: If you’d like to get food and drinks off the ship, you won’t have to walk very far. There are several restaurants and bars in the Taino Bay cruise port, including a mojito bar, a rum bar, a coffee shop, and a Mexican restaurant.

WiFi, restrooms, and a last-minute excursion desk are also available at the Puerto Plata cruise port.

Things to See in Puerto Plata

Want to explore beyond the cruise port? There are lots of great things to see and do in Puerto Plata. Highlights include:

The Umbrella Street: An adorable, Instagram-friendly street with colorful umbrellas hanging above. In addition to being a great photo opportunity, there are shops and restaurants along the street.

Paseo Dona Blanca (Pink Street): Within walking distance of the umbrella street is the Paseo Dona Blanca (also known as the pink street). This is also an Instagram-friendly street that is entirely bright pink, with different installations that are great photo backdrops. Both Umbrella Street and the Pink Street are an easy walk from Central Park (Independence Square).

Macorix House of Rum: If you love rum, you’ll want to do the tour and tasting at the Macorix House of Rum. It includes a movie about rum making, a walk through the barrels, and a tasting of a bunch of different rum flavors. There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase your favorites at a great price.

Fortaleza San Felipe : As you sail into the Taino Bay cruise port, you’ll see the Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress.

Ocean World Adventure Park: An ocean park offering animal encounters, a beach, a restaurant, and more, Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers.

Puerto Plata Cable Car: If you want to see beautiful views of Puerto Plata from above, visit the Puerto Plata Cable Car. The ride will take you up to Mount Isabel de Torres, a National Park.

Playa Dorada : Want to visit the beach during your day in Puerto Plata? Playa Dorada (the golden beach), is a great option. This is the area where many of the Puerto Plata resorts are located.

Damajagua Waterfalls : This park, which is best via by cruise ship passengers via an excursion, offers 27 waterfalls (although excursions typically include visits to 12). You’ll be able to swim, jump, and more. Here’s one excursion that is well-rated .

Dominican Amber Museum : Puerto Plata is well-known for its beautiful amber. If you want to see it up close, you can visit the Puerto Plata Amber Museum .

Puerto Plata Shore Excursions

You’ll have lots of options for excursions in Puerto Plata if you decide to leave your cruise ship. Excursions will vary by availability and cruise line, but here are some options listed below.

Keep in mind that if you book an independent excursion not through the cruise line, it’s your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time. If you book the excursion through your cruise line, they will be responsible for making sure you get back.

Food Tour: During my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, we did a Puerto Plata tasting tour that I would highly recommend. We started at the Macorix House of Rum, where we were able to taste multiple varieties of rum.

We then headed to three popular restaurants – La Skina Restaurant, Mares Restaurant, and Casita Azul, to try some location cuisine. Before going back to the port, we stopped at the Pink Street and the Umbrella Street. It was led by a local guide and was an official cruise ship excursion.

Ziplining : Looking for a little more adventure? Some excursions go to the Wild Play Adventure Park where you’ll be able to zipline over the ocean and enjoy some time at the beach.

Beach Day : Want to visit the beach? One excursion on our sailing was to Coconut Cove Beach where sailors had the opportunity to enjoy drinks, lunch, and time at the beach. There was also a separate excursion to Fricolandia Beach Club.

Damajagua Waterfalls : There were a number of different excursions to Damajagua Waterfalls. One includes ziplining, swimming, sliding, and a ride in a buggy. There’s also one that includes off-roading.

You’ll probably find a number of other excursions during your visit to Puerto Plata. Think about the type of experience you’d want to have and find a well-reviewed excursion that fits. If you aren’t sure, a guided city tour of Puerto Plata is always a good idea so you can get an overview of the area.

Amber Cove Puerto Plata Port

I mentioned above that many cruise ships dock at the new-ish Taino Bay cruise port. However, there are more than one cruise ship terminals – some ships dock at the Amber Cove cruise port. Opened in 2015, the Amber Cove cruise center was developed privately by Carnival Cruise Line.

Amber Cove is sort of a combination between a port and a private destination. There’s lots to do within the port , including a water park area, shopping, watersports, and more. Excursions are also an option, if you’d like to explore beyond the Amber Cove cruise port immediate area.

Frequently Asked Questions

During our food tour, we had the opportunity to try bandera dominicana (translated to Dominican Flag), a dish that includes fried plantains, rice and beans, chicken, and some fruit. We also had a delicious soup with rice.

Popular drinks include the local mamajuana – a drink made with rum, honey, and wine, as well as local rum.

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso. US dollars are typically accepted, which makes it easy for a quick cruise port stop. Credit cards are accepted in some locations.
