We caught a cab here from the airport because we weren't really sure about public transportation and it seemed a lot more complicated. Our cab driver knew exactly where to go when we showed him the address and port, so I would suggest just taking a taxi if you are able. We arrived a bit earlier than planned, and we were glad, as there wasn't a large crowd or line at the front entrance. Had we not gotten information from our cruise line, MSC, it may have been a bit confusing. There was one attendant who couldn't really answer any of our questions and only pointed us to bag drop-off. Some of the other passengers spoke English and were able to help us out. Once we checked in our luggage, we headed inside. It's a very large and open area, cold and without much of an atmosphere or view, other than staring straight at the side of the cruise ship. There are washrooms and a small café with minimal snacks for purchase. We weren't really sure what to do from here, so we asked one of the attendants at the counter, who told us they would call our number when it was our turn to board. Other than that, it's really just a waiting game. I would suggest bringing your own water, snacks, a sweater, and something to keep yourself occupied, as well as sitting close to where you get in line. The seats can get pretty uncomfortable after awhile, and you have to pay attention to when they call for boarding, since they weren't using any kind of PA system while we were there.

Not sure what the other reviews say since they're in German, but we had a very pleasant embarkation and disembarkation at this cruise center. The location is rather difficult to get to via public transportation, but your cruise line probably provides transportation from the airport or the Hamburg Central Train Station for a fee (we paid €10 per cabin to get to the MSC ship but the return trip at end of the cruise was free.)

Here you can experience a bit of wanderlust and the cruise ships come close, even if you do not ride.

"The Cruise Center Steinwerder is the most modern handling terminal of the cruise ship location Hamburg. After commissioning on 09.June 2015, 8,000 passengers per day can be handled there in two separate terminal buildings. Cruise ships of the latest generation with a total length of over 330 m and a draft of up to 13 m can be secured at this location. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is thus strengthening its position as an attractive cruise destination for shipping companies and cruise tourists. The opening hours of the terminal depend on the arrival and departure times of the cruise ships. The terminal is only open at this time for passengers, bringers and fetchers, as well as cruise lovers. " cruisegate-hamburg.de/de/terminal/cruise-center-steinwerder It has a large paid parking, but is difficult to reach by public transport. If there is no cruise ship, the place is a bit dull. Some Crusaders, especially Cunard, are not so happy about this location. Further source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg_Cruise_Center_Steinwerder

Cool Cruiser

So quick question

We have done Hamburg before so we were thinking of something different to do on our trip next week. There is a tunnel that runs under the river called old Elbe Tunnel (will put the link below incase anyone is interested) which we fancy going to see. We were going to walk to it as it's only about 25 mins from the terminal but someone told us you can't walk from the Cruise ship you have to take a bus for taxi. Can anyone shed any light on if this is correct?

I did some checking. It is 1.6 miles to walk from the cruise terminal and the modern access road has pavements, cycle lanes and bus stops although it appears there are no bus routes in that area. There are no apparent barriers on the road but google earth does not have street view there, probably because it is an industrial area and not a public road. I presume you could take a taxi as there is pedestrian access from both ends of the tunnel or it maybe only the north end? You can use the lifts at both ends?

You can leave the cruise terminal on foot as you need to to get to the nearest ferry stop

We sailed out of Hamburg from this terminal shortly before covid and looked into getting over the river.  There are ferries that run from the centre of Hamburg, though sadly not on a Sunday, which is what we needed, so we took a taxi.  I had read that the walk through the tunnel is a fair distance, so not for us as we will probably be on our feet for much of the rest of the day.

Does P&O provide shuttle buses if on a cruise stop though - perhaps someone can answer that question?  We are stopping there on Arcadia in June, so need to find out ourselves.  The only time we have been on a cruise stop in Hamburg was on a Fred ship and we docked in Altona, which is much better placed, though shuttle buses were run into the centre for both days of the overnight visit.

Getting to The Old Elbe Tunnel , It is walkable from  Hamburg Cruise Center Steinwerder, Did it myself a few months ago. It is sign posted also if I remember correctly.  It took me about an hour to get to it, but I was not walking very fast.

Yes, there are shuttles to the city centre, just off the Rathaus. Well organised on Iona.

Thanks for the info. We are used to walking so it's not too much of an issue even if it is an hour away.

Yes, you can walk from the Steinwerder Cruise Terminal to the old Elbe tunnel. As others have stated before, it is a bit of a walk and it leads through harbour/warehouse/factory areas and thus not the most chilling walk. Also not much protection from weather and nowhere a place to sit down and relax on the way. Also watch your directions, you might otherwise end on the wrong side of a harbour basin without chance to cross.

The old Elbe tunnel is a worthy sight as a technical monument of the early 20th c. Pedestrian access is 24/7 and, of course, from both sides (the tunnel would not make much sense otherwise^^). From the southern entry to the tunnel there is a fine view across the river towards the city skyline.

We docked at Altona on a Fred ship.  It was perfectly located with a bus stop directly outside the port gate, but even better, there was a ferry stop immediately next to the ship.

We had two full days there. We went to the tunnel one of the times we were returning to Altona.  The tunnel is beside the major traffic hub of Landungsbrücken which you can reach by bus, ferry and ,U-Bahn?  We only walked part way through and back as we were quite tired at that point having been out most of the day.  You access by lift/elevator and some with bicycles use that too.. It is worth a quick look even if you don't walk the full length both ways..  If you can find a way to reach Landungsbrücken, from there  you could travel to anywhere in the city with a choice of transport options .  It is itself an interesting and popular  spot to enjoy a drink or snack as there was a tremendous amount of activity to watch, including an old style paddle boat and many ferries heading out and back. ( read Tripadvisor and other online reviews)

If you want to take a tour of the docks, boat/ferry  trips leave from there.    We included it as part of our return to the ship, and had taken whatever type of train it was (part underground, part overground on that line) from the large square where the Town Hall is located to Landungsbrücken, explored some of the tunnel, enjoyed a drink whilst watching all the activity, then took the ferry directly back to our ship at Altona.  We had bought day tickets when we boarded the public bus outside the dock in the morning.

The short  ferry trip from Landungsbrücken to Altona is actually quite scenic, as it passes along the waterfront, even passing a docked Russian submarine at the submarine museum.  And tours of the docks are really popular given the massive size of the dock area.  As we had seen much of the port on our sail-in we didn't do that, but could recommend you consider the short ferry ride between .Landungsbrücken (as you will be there for the tunnel anyway)and Altona, then return to .Landungsbrücken.

Timetables and routes for the ferries can be found online.  Note that the port tours are not hop on hop off ferries, you are on for the tour duration, but the commuter ones running between Landungsbrücken and Altona are a bit like local buses with stops along the way.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I was in Hamburg on the Queen Mary 2 they had a free shuttle into Hamburg and made it very easy to tour the city and walk the Elbe tunnel.  It was very interesting to see.

Around the terminal: staying overnight

There are no hostels in the container port (yet). We recommend two nearby hotels for those who like to see: The Empire Riverside rises out of the harbour like a black monolith, hardly any house offers a more spectacular view over the Elbe. The Hanse Clipper Haus, located in the middle of the Portuguese quarter, offers a maximum lateral view of the Elbe, large rooms, perfect for long weekends.

The Cruise Center Steinwerder is located in the middle of the container port - and awakens curiosity to explore this world of work. Countless individual facilities make up the harbour as a whole, a harbour tour to Kuhwerderhafen and the old lighthouse in Ellermoorhafen shows the change, but above all that it is still a place of work. The halls of BallinStadt show that a good 100 years ago the harbour was above all a place for refugees. They were once the accommodation for all those who wanted to leave Europe and Germany in order to have a better future in the USA. Between 1891 and 1914 almost two million people emigrated.

The air-raid shelter in Wilhelmsburg was once a place of fear until it was converted into an energy bunker for the building exhibition. From its roof terrace, the Café-Restaurant Vju at a height of 30 metres not only offers a great view over the city, but also very tasty food. There is a culinary travel guide on the subject: "The Fish Roll Report" claims to list the best of its kind in northern Germany. Bridge 10 occupies a special position - homemade ribs, homemade remoulade and so much filling that you can't open your mouth so wide. And that with this situation: on the landing bridges, the ships pass you within reach.

"You don't learn the sailor's life by doing exercises in a puddle" is the beautiful motto on the website of the Hamburg Maritim Foundation. The foundation has its headquarters in shed 50 at Hansahafen - and is waiting for the arrival of the four-mast barque PEKING. The ship, whose elaborate restoration began in summer 2017, is to become the showpiece of the German Harbour Museum. You can already find out about it in the Schuppen 50.

At the Cruise Center Hafen City (CC1) in the heart of Hamburg's HafenCity and opposite the Port of Hamburg, cruise ships have been handled at a terminal from modular container elements since 2004. In order to make optimal use of this valuable location, a new cruise terminal will be built here by the end of 2022. Until the opening of the new terminal in the southern Überseequartier and beyond for a total of 10 years, cruise ships can use the temporary Cruise Center Baakenhöft as an alternative and additional berth in HafenCity. The Hamburg Cruise Center Baakenhöft is located in the eastern HafenCity at Kirchenpauerkai and consists of a terminal building as well as a quay operating area and traffic areas. The terminal building has one floor with a floor space of approx. 1,000 m² and is designed as a steel construction hall. In the traffic areas outside the building there is a drop-off zone for taxis and individual cars, as well as areas for handling shuttle and tour buses.
