Courtesy visit of the UNCT Retreat members to the President of Seychelles

The UN delegation, lead respectively by Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, Regional Director, East and Southern Africa of UNFPA and Her Excellency Ambassador Christine Umutoni, UN Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles, comprising Regional Directors from UNESCO and UNWTO, and Heads of UN agencies of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles during a courtesy call to the President of Seychelles (in the centre, first row)

His Excellency, the President of Seychelles, Mr Danny Faure welcomed the UN delegation for a courtesy visit in the morning of Tuesday April 16, 2019 at the State House of Seychelles.  H.E.   Mr D. Faure acknowledged the commitment of the UN delegation, lead respectively by Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, Regional Director, East and Southern Africa of UNFPA and Her Excellency Ambassador Christine Umutoni, UN Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles. The delegation also comprised Regional Directors from UNESCO and UNWTO, and Heads of UN agencies of four countries namely Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles who will participate in the UN Retreat.

The President of Seychelles welcomed the UN Country Team to Seychelles and expressed his gratitude for choosing to hold the retreat in the Island nation to better understand the context. He appreciated the UN’s commitment to the Seychelles while other bilateral and multi-lateral agencies have disengaged as the country attained high-income status. The UN support has allowed the country to continue having an equal voice in the international arena as well as identifying and tackling existing vulnerabilities. A copy of the State of World Population Report 2019, in preparation for the regional launch to be held jointly by the Government and UNCT, was handed over to the President on this occasion. The Government of Seychelles and UNCT Strategic Programme Framework, a first in partnership platform, has enabled joint funding, implementation and review of progress. He pledged his Government’s total commitment for its implementation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The latter also acknowledged the separation of the Resident Coordinator office from the UNDP stating that the delinking will help to better focus support.

“Seychelles is excelling in many areas including attainment of high-income status and is recognized as a blue economy champion, but it is still facing some challenges such as inequality that need to be addressed,” stated HE Mr Faure.   The latter backed the regional engagement in the context of SIDS specially the commonalities among IOC countries whereby Seychelles is the actual chair and reiterated the commitment of the Republic of Seychelles in supporting the SAMOA pathway and all other regional and international commitments.

Dr. Julitta Onabanjo, Head of Delegation, indicated a number of events that will be held alongside the UNCT retreat such as the UNFPA launch of the State of World Population Report 2019; the celebration of the 50 th anniversary of UNFPA and ICPD’s 25 th ; the KWIBUKA25 remembrance event 25th commemoration of 1994 Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi; the Official Launching of the SPF Steering Committee of Seychelles; and a team building trip to Praslin Island. She said the SWOP2019 report incorporated the progress made during the last 25 years. The report puts people, especially women at the center of development, that is  education for girls and safe pregnancies amongst others but highlighted  that more needs to be done.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Mrs. Christine Umutoni, described the UNCT Retreat as a UN Family Country Team annual event that reviews country specific plans and from this retreat, regional needs and networks will be incorporated. “The Agenda has been elaborated to gain consensus on Seychelles SPF implementation mechanisms; support Mauritius SPF launch and implementation and to explore means of regional collaboration” , she concluded.

The retreat itself, which is the main objective of this meeting, aims to build on lessons learnt from the previous years, agree on the UNCT’s collective strategic engagement within the context of regional framework, UN reform and support both countries to achieve SDGs.   The UNCT Retreat will maintain its critical role in promoting valuable support towards capacity building efforts, in fostering policy dialogue and advocacy, sharing of best practices and identifying lessons and innovations, and back research and data analysis in addition to various ongoing projects and programs.

To conclude, Dr. Julitta Onabanjo extended her appreciations to the President for the warm welcome provided by the Government of Seychelles in organizing the retreat and facilitating the participants’ stay in the island and the valuable support his Government offered in facilitating the work of the UN in Seychelles including establishment of a coordination office in the Foreign Affairs Office.

Difference between courtesy call and courtesy visit.

In business, a courtesy call is a visit or call from a company to customers to measure satisfaction or thank them for their patronage. [9] A newly appointed head of mission usually pays a courtesy call to the Minister of Foreign Affairs who received him, to the head of government and often to other dignitaries such as the local mayor. It is also common for a new head of mission to make courtesy visits to other heads of mission in the capital and often receive courtesy visits. Failure to make a courtesy visit to the missions of small countries may lead them to upset the newly arrived head of mission. When a head of mission leaves, an additional round of courtesy visits is often expected. [3] Meeting this protocol obligation is a tedious task, with one diplomat noting that it took him five months to complete a cycle in Washington DC. [4] The diplomatic convention states that courtesy calls last 20 minutes, which in some cases is exaggerated as both sides are desperately looking for what to say, although some ambassadors consult an encyclopedia before the call to prepare talking points. In other cases where session pages have commonalities to discuss, a call may take an hour or two. Diplomatic staff are divided on the value of courtesy visits, some see them as a time-consuming tradition, while others see them as a way to get a valuable introduction.

In some cases, it is possible to arrange a joint courtesy visit by visiting a Senior Ambassador who, upon prior agreement, brings his regional colleagues together for the meeting. [5] U.S. Navy regulations require that (when joining a new ship or station) an officer must make a courtesy call on his or her new commander or commander within 48 hours of joining. [8] A courtesy call is a telephone call or courtesy visit. [1] Dial the number and wait for the party to respond. Wait for the customer to say “hello” and then speak. Identify yourself and the company you represent. For example, you should say, “Hello/afternoon, Natalie Smith is calling from Widget Corporation.” Make the courtesy call from a moderately quiet neighborhood with a company phone. Ensure good call quality by checking if you have a good signal when calling from a company phone. A strong focus on good, useful communication can create a place of respect for the small business. Courtesy calls are a great way to remind customers of upcoming appointments, check for the arrival of a replacement product, or check if payment has been received.

However, it is important that the courtesy call is done in the right way. Customers don`t like to receive unwanted sales calls, especially if they`re already doing business with the company, but a courtesy call is acceptable. Support important business relationships by adding this helpful service to your customer service procedures. Naval courtesy calls were common in the 19th century. [6] The U.S. Great White Fleet made a series of courtesy calls to ports around the world during a demonstration of U.S. naval power in 1907-1909. [7] In diplomacy, a courtesy visit is a formal meeting where a diplomat or representative of a state visits a head of state or a representative of the state as a courtesy.

Courtesy calls can be paid for by another head of state, prime minister, minister or diplomat. The meeting usually has symbolic value and rarely involves a detailed discussion of the topics. At the beginning of the new year, the diplomatic corps usually makes a collective courtesy visit to a head of state to deliver his State`s New Year`s greetings to the head of state. In some cases, speeches may be made, often by the Head of State, in which the diplomatic policy of their State for the coming year can be outlined. The ambassadors then report on this speech to their own Heads of State and Government. At the most formal level, ambassadors who make courtesy visits to a head of state may be required to wear a diplomatic uniform, national state dress, morning suit or white tie. Formal courtesy calls to a head of state usually take place in a presidential or royal palace. Be sure to talk to the right party. Say, “May I speak to the Lord. Schmidt? If the answering machine hesitates, say, “This is a courtesy call and it only takes a minute. Wait for the group to join the line or ask for a good reminder time. Calls for courtesy to members of Cabinet and members of Parliament or Congress are important and can lay the foundation for an ongoing relationship.

In Western democracies, ambassadors will make appeals to the leaders of small and large opposition parties, as a change of government could take place at a later date. Such calls are important, and the ambassador must be careful to cultivate opposition without offending the incumbents. Appeals were also made to bourgeois dignitaries in the big cities, newspaper editors and trade unions. [5] In diplomacy, a courtesy visit is a formal meeting where a diplomat or a representative or famous person of a nation visits a head of state or a representative of the state as a courtesy. Courtesy calls can be paid for by another head of state, prime minister, minister (government) or diplomat. The meeting usually has symbolic value and rarely involves a detailed discussion of the topics. [2] Provide the service by providing or requesting the required information. Be polite and helpful during the call.

Keep the call short and concise. Courtesy call should always be a method of communication that helps the customer in one way or another. The numerical value of the courtesy call in Chaldean numerology is: 5 “courtesy call”. Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/courtesy%20call. The visit allowed PIDF Secretary General, Mr. François Martel to provide an overview of the strategic directions and recent activities of PIDF while building the new regional organisation structure, processes and staff over the last 9 months since their last encounter. Mention was made of the Post-COP21 Public Forum on the Paris Agreement and other Post-COP21 engagements on maritime shipping emissions, in the role of Civil Society in climate change actions, and on climate-induced migrations and displacements.

“We had constructive discussions during the meeting with Ambassador Zaagman especially on the role of PIDF as a Pacific SIDS and South-South platform, as well as the potential for closer collaboration with the Netherlands” said Mr. Martel.

Ambassador Zaagman also shared his country experience and agreed that there are potential areas of collaboration in the area of sustainable development and building climate resilience in the Pacific.  The Ambassador pointed out his country’s expertise in water resilience, island resilience and in their willingness to share climate-smart solutions with SIDS. He provided a series of documents on the One Kingdom – Four Countries concept as Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten are Caribbean autonomous SIDS.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands strives to be a partner in finding innovative, creative and green solutions to build resilience and create a sustainable society.  ‘This echoes the mandate of the Pacific Islands Development Forum, as provided to us by the Pacific Leaders and in line with our Strategic Plan to be tabled to the next Leaders’ Summit” pointed out Mr. Martel after the meeting.

Already, through the relationship and role of their Special Envoy of the Netherlands for Pacific SIDS, HE Sjef Ijzermans, based in Manilla, a team of Dutch specialists and resilience engineers visited recently several atoll nations of the Pacific to assess climate resilience options for the atolls.

Mr. Martel took the opportunity to invite the Kingdom of the Netherlands to participate in the next Pacific Leaders’ Summit of the PIDF to be held on 12-13 July, in Honiara, Solomon Islands. The Pre-Summit event will include discussions on preparation for COP22, on Healthy Oceans and on climate adaptation financing – issues of common interest between Pacific Islands and the Netherlands.

Meg Whitman: Inside the powerful world of the diplomat at the centre of Ruto's global frenzy

Kenneth Gachie

US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman during a past address. PHOTO | COURTESY

Gone are the days when a Sir Edward Clay would brazenly accuse the Kenyan government of "vomiting all over our shoes," sparking a heated diplomatic row and risking relations between two friendly countries.

Today, the relationship between the Kenyan state and the Western embassies has grown so exponentially, it is hard for either of the two to exist without the other.

That relationship can best be exemplified by the camaraderie that President William Ruto and US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman share; since she was posted in 2022, the country has not witnessed such an escalated comradeship between the a Head of State and a High Commissioner.

After Kenya held elections and the results were contentious, Whitman publicly welcomed the results, calling the process free and fair - echoing what international observers had said.

Her stance, however, bothered the opposition who were at the time sharply against the outcome. It did not seem to bother her as she had clearly come for business.

And business unusual it was.

Whitman, a renowned American businesswoman and former CEO of e-commerce giants Hewlett-Packard and eBay, immediately launched into an economic diplomatic blitz which positioned her right at the centre of the Ruto administration, immediately getting down to work, bringing her tested business acumen to the fore.

According to the ‘New African’ magazine, Whitman envisions Kenya as the “Singapore of Africa,” a shining example of what can be achieved through strategic investment and innovative thinking.

With a vision grounded in Kenya’s strategic location, skilled workforce, and commitment to renewable energy and digital connectivity, Whitman’s dedication to trade and Kenya's self-sufficiency has become a beacon of her tenure.

Her visionary leadership, business acumen, and relentless pursuit of opportunities are reshaping America’s engagement with Kenya in the face of unprecedented challenges.

She has become instrumental in most of President Ruto's trips to the USA - accompanying him along the way as she seeks to woo investors and use her unrivalled skills at commerce to bring the goodies home.

She, according to a column by PR expert Gina Din, has brought a unique blend of corporate acumen and global foresight that has allowed her to identify untapped opportunities and cultivate partnerships that benefit American investors and Kenya alike.

Unlike previous US emissaries, Whitman has refused to sit back and watch, instead preferring to be front and centre, pushing the President to more opportunities, trumpeting the gospel of Kenya and unashamedly exerting her unmissable influence in all matters Kenya.

Just recently, she organised the President's session with the Harvard Business School Class of 2025 as she appeared to moderate a panel that saw Ruto explain his tax policies and economic agenda.

Presently, she's in the US alongside the President and other Kenyan leaders in a trip that has seen Ruto become only the sixth Head of State - after the leaders of South Korea, France, India, Australia and Japan – to be accorded a State visit to the US during the Biden presidency.

Ruto's historic trip is also the first time in two decades that an African president has been accorded a State visit to the US.

All of this is through the magic touch of Meg Whitman - a close President Biden ally and a former Republican contender for the US Presidency.

But who is Meg Whitman? The 68-year old is a notable American business executive and politician who was president and chief executive officer (CEO) of eBay from 1998 to 2008.

Afterwards, she became president and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise from 2011 to 2015 and then served as the CEO of Quibi from its launch in 2018 until its closure in 2020.

During Mitt Romney’s run for Presidency in 2008 and in 2012, Whitman was a senior presidential campaign official for the Republican candidate.

She would later jump ship to the Democratic side by supporting Democrats Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in the 2016 and the 2020 presidential elections, respectively.

Forbes currently evaluates Whitman to be worth a staggering $3 billion (Ksh.398 billion). In fact, so deep are her pockets that when she was running for the California gubernatorial seat back in 2010, she spent, at the time, more of her own money on a single election than any other political candidate in American history.

Despite losing the seat to Jerry Brown, Whitman shocked the nation after it was revealed that she spents $144 million (Ksh.19 billion) of her own money.

Closer home, she appears to apply her political astuteness to shape the country's policies, lend invaluable advice to the Ruto administration, and plug the country to the right international sockets and tap the country's immense potential.

Unlike most U.S. diplomats who tend to be more comfortable with security and governance issues, Whitman’s eyes are more on commercial diplomacy, becoming an evangelist for the idea that American businesses should consider her host country and continent as a business destination.

Last year, Whitman and Ruto toured Silicon Valley together, hoping to bring in investments. While flanked by Whitman in an event sponsored by Prosper Africa, Ruto made the intention of the trip crystal clear.

"I have come to the Silicon Valley to underscore the Kenya government's strategic intent to support, through infrastructure and other investment, the enhancement of Kenya's position as the epicenter of Africa's innovation and technological transformation," he said then.

While her intense involvement in the national affairs has raised some eyebrows, Whitman appears unfazed by the critics. She knows the US faces stiff competition from China and Russia and is steadfastly dedicated to put her country first - and Kenya too while at it.

Politico reports that if you’re a U.S. official on the phone with Meg Whitman and you’re wondering what Kenyan President William Ruto thinks about something, it’s entirely possible she’ll say: “Let me call and ask him.”

Minutes later, she might even conference Ruto into your call.

Such is the vigour, vivacity and commitment of Meg Whitman - she knows why Joe Biden picked her for Kenya. And she is consistently pulling all the stops to make the decision worthwhile.

US Ambassador to Japan Visits Southern Islands at the Forefront of China Tension

The U.S. ambassador to Japan has stressed the importance of increased deterrence and his country’s commitment to its key ally as he visited two southwestern Japanese islands at the forefront of Tokyo's tension with Beijing

TOKYO (AP) — The U.S. ambassador to Japan stressed Friday the importance of increased deterrence and his country’s commitment to its key ally as he visited two southwestern Japanese islands at the forefront of Tokyo's tension with Beijing.

Rahm Emanuel visited Yonaguni, Japan’s westernmost island just east of Taiwan , a self-governed island also claimed by China. He later visited another Japanese island, Ishigaki, home to Japan Coast Guard patrol boats defending the disputed East China Sea islands and Japanese fishermen from armed Chinese coast guard ships that routinely enter Japanese waters.

Japan has been making a southwest shift of its defense posture, and is further accelerating its military buildup under a 2022 security strategy that focuses on counter-strike capability with long-range cruise missiles.

Emanuel was the first U.S. ambassador to visit Yonaguni. Escorted by Mayor Kenichi Itokazu, he looked toward Taiwan, only 110 kilometers (68 miles) away. He met with Japanese Self Defense Force servicemembers at a local base installed in 2016 and where a missile defense system is planned.

The ambassador said the main purpose of his visit was to show U.S. support for the local fishing community. He also met with a local fisherman who was among those affected by China’s increasingly assertive actions in the regional seas.

China fired five missiles into Japan’s exclusive economic zone in 2022 after the visit to Taiwan of then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Emanuel said the fisherman told him he could not sell his fish for about a week after the Chinese action.

“If they don’t have deterrence, that’s going to be worse,” Emanuel told The Associated Press from Ishigaki, the second island he visited Friday. “If you have a very robust deterrence, it ensures that there is peace, ensures that there is security, ensures economic prosperity. Without that, it’s more likely to be a green light to those that want to use economic coercion and confrontation as their only means of expression.”

Emanuel said Yonaguni fishers still catch fish for a living, supporting the local economy and helping reinforce Japanese territorial rights. “That's what a real win looks like — economic security,” he said on social platform X.

In Ishigaki, Japan's coast guard protects fishing boats in the disputed waters around the Japanese-controlled islands in the East China Sea that Tokyo calls Senkaku. Beijing also claims the islands and calls them Diaoyu, and its coast guard ships often face off with their Japanese counterparts.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi welcomed the ambassador’s trip to the islands, saying it was “meaningful” for the ambassador to improve his understanding of Tokyo's efforts in reinforcing its security in the southwestern region, where additional military units and missile defense systems are being deployed.

While local officials back the reinforcement of Japanese troops on the islands, local residents staged a small protest amid concerns they may be the first to be affected in a possible U.S.-China conflict.

Okinawa's Gov. Denny Tamaki supports the Japan-U.S. security alliance but has called for a reduction in the number of American troops housed on the island. About half of the 50,000 American troops in Japan are based in Okinawa.

Tamaki also criticized the use of Yonaguni’s commercial airport by a U.S. military aircraft used by the ambassador.

Earthlings, We Come in Pieces: Legos Inspire the Next Generation of Space Explorers

Research conducted on behalf of the lego group finds that more than half of generation alpha respondents want to be astronauts when they grow up..

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey—A bed with wings, a dinosaur with a jetpack, and other whimsical creations dazzled the New York City skyline Wednesday night during an event meant to inspire the next generation of astronauts, scientists, and space explorers.

The Lego Group this week hosted a drone show under the stars, recreating imaginative spaceship designs submitted by children around the world—which the company has playfully dubbed Unidentified Playing Objects (UPOs)—using hundreds of small, buzzing aircraft.

Kids around the world were invited to submit UPO designs, with the winners seeing their spacecraft come to life (in Lego form, of course) at the Lego House in Denmark, where they will remain on display until June 17. The creations were also showcased Wednesday in Jersey City alongside Lego reconstructions of famous rockets, such as NASA’s Space Launch System.

“The imagination shown by young children around the world was mind-blowing, and this was one of the best experiences I have had,” said Didac Perez Soriano, associate master builder at the Lego House. “With so much of the universe still to be explored, we can’t say that what they have created isn’t possible—or even out there already.”

According to a recent study conducted on behalf of Lego by research firm Ipsos, 58 percent of kids surveyed said they want a career in space—more than their parents did when they were younger (49 percent) and more than any generation previously studied. In 2019, the company found that more children dreamed of being YouTubers than astronauts.

Kellie Gerardi—mission operations lead at software firm Palantir and a payload specialist and astronaut for Virgin Galactic, as well as a researcher, author, social media personality , mother, and Lego ambassador—saids meeting kids where they are, such as through play, is one of the best ways to inspire even more youngsters to pursue careers in space.

“I think [the research] goes to show that there is an innate fascination with the cosmos that exists. The tricky part is always bridging that gap,” Gerardi told FLYING . “Of course, space is incredibly exciting and interesting—who wouldn't be amazed by it? But then how do you actually metabolize that excitement and turn imagination into motivation later in life?”

courtesy visit ambassador

Gerardi has conducted microgravity research on behalf of the International Institute for Aeronautical Sciences (IIAS) for a decade, performing parabolic flights in reduced-gravity aircraft, known colloquially as vomit comets.

One of the institute’s goals is to send researchers into space—an honor Gerardi received when she flew on Virgin Galactic’s Galactic 05 dedicated science mission in November, with Lego figures of herself and 6-year-old daughter Delta. She is one of the first payload specialists to fly to space and one of the first 100 women to reach the cosmos.

“To me, that was the dream,” Gerardi said. “I built a career in the commercial space industry. I worked at the Commercial Spaceflight Federation , starting my career in space policy—how we allow and enable these companies to do commercial human spaceflight.”

Earthlings, We Come in Pieces

Six UPOs took to the skies Wednesday night in the form of drone constellations, illuminating the New York City skyline. Among them were a Shiba Inu-shaped spaceship with 360-degree windows, a turtle spaceship complete with a slide and ladder, and plenty more.

courtesy visit ambassador

Lotty Ingle, a 10-year-old girl from the U.K. who dreams of collecting moon rocks and visiting unexplored planets, created a double bed design that flies on butterfly wings (for both aesthetic and eco-friendly purposes). Beneath the bed is a snack drawer to feed herself—and any aliens she encounters, of course.

courtesy visit ambassador

“I would love to travel to all the planets that no one has discovered yet and see if there is life there and if they are just like us,” said Ingle. “I would really like them to try all my favorite snacks that I am bringing with me.”

Jordan Hardnett, a 12-year-old boy from Philadelphia who hopes to one day spacewalk across the galaxy in search of aliens, designed a time-traveling spaceship with night vision goggles to help astronauts see creatures on other planets.

“I would love to travel to space,” said Hardnett. “If I could fly, I would hope to find a different species, aliens, and any type of rock to research.”

Seven-year-old Jillian Granelli, also from the U.S., wants to one day live on another planet and build a home on the moon. Her UPO, a jetpack-wearing dinosaur, is built to fly her all around the Milky Way.

“If I could travel to space, I would say hi to aliens and become friends with them,” Granelli said. “Especially the Lego aliens.”

Sebastian Mikkelsen, a 10-year-old boy who came all the way from Denmark to watch his UPO take flight, hopes to become the next Danish astronaut and visit Jupiter and Mars. His creation, a straw hat spaceship with reindeer antlers for wings, comes equipped with a high-tech computer lab and a gaming room.

“I would bring things like stones, gases, and minerals (from the planets) back home to Earth to show my classmates,” said Mikkelsen. “Maybe we can use them to develop new things that can help us on Earth. It could be new forms of energy and better electricity.”

courtesy visit ambassador

The junior UPO designers are far from the only kids with an interest in space.

According to the study commissioned by Lego, which surveyed 16,000 children in Generation Alpha, more than three-quarters of kids aged 4 to 14 say they want to travel to the final frontier. Fifty-eight percent of them say they would like to work in space, with more than half wanting to become astronauts when they grow up.

Another 86 percent of children are interested in discovering new stars, planets, and galaxies. Nearly 7 in 10 (68 percent) believe there are aliens out there waiting to be found.

The kids’ responses were more than backed up by their parents, among whom 61 percent say their child wants to fly to space. Two-thirds of them say their child has an interest in space, and more than three-quarters think Generation Alpha children have the greatest opportunity to explore space.

Sixty-two percent of parents genuinely believe their child will one day be able to reach the final frontier. They voted Generation Alpha as more likely than any other generation to make the biggest contribution to the world’s scientific knowledge of space.

Capturing the Imagination

In addition to her work with Palantir, Virgin Galactic, and IIAS, Gerardi is also the author of the children’s book series Luna Muna , which follows the adventures of a young girl curious about the cosmos. The book was read aloud on the International Space Station (ISS) last year by the crew of Axiom Space’s Axiom-2 mission .

Gerardi said that young people naturally have plenty of interest in outer space. But there is a gap in the market for materials that capture that interest, such as books.

“We have to intentionally make those connections to allow kids to benefit from that innate curiosity and help them build on it,” Gerardi said. “So that, very similarly I think, was my motivation for creating a children's book series that centers space, meets kids where they're at with their imagination, and encourages them to see themselves represented in that way.”

courtesy visit ambassador

Gerardi is excited about initiatives that target undergraduate students and connect them with internships at commercial space companies, government agencies, and academic institutions. IIAS, for example, offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses on astronautics, flight test engineering, and spacesuit evaluation at partner universities such as the Florida Institute of Technology and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

The ISS National Laboratory offers internships and fellowships with companies such as Axiom Space, Blue Origin, and SpaceX, and government partners, including NASA and the Department of Defense. These organizations and others aim to send more non-NASA researchers and science experiments to space, opening the cosmos to a wider range of actors.

“It was hands down the absolute best experience of my life, and I still have intense emotional saturation six months later thinking about it,” Gerardi said of her journey to space on Galactic 05. “We had a mandatory medical debrief immediately after the flight. And the only thing I reported was cheek soreness because I was grinning through boost the entire time.”

Gerardi hopes to recreate that experience for as many people as possible. And inspiring children to explore careers in space using Legos or books is how it begins.

courtesy visit ambassador

“The goal was always so much bigger than flying myself. It was helping blow open the door to commercial human spaceflight,” she said. “And so watching the next generation, thinking about what they'll grow up experiencing—this access to space, where the next generation of researchers can really use space as a laboratory to benefit humanity—is just very fulfilling to think about.”

Gerardi believes being an astronaut is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to career paths in the space ecosystem for the next generation. But unless children see and understand those other jobs, it can be difficult for them to imagine they exist.

“I view space as our shared past and our shared future,” Gerardi said. “And I think that our next giant leap is going to require the talents of artists, engineers, and everyone in between…I think really we’re standing on the doorstep to a new, golden age of spaceflight.”

JFK Wrote 'Palestine Was Hardly Britain's to Give Away' in Letter to Father?

A young kennedy made a trip to palestine in 1939., nur ibrahim, published may 24, 2024.

Correct Attribution

About this rating

The quote does not fully encapsulate Kennedy's views. He wrote in the same letter he had become "more pro-British" during his visit to Jerusalem as "the men on the spot are doing a good job here." He called the British proposed solution at the time theoretically "just and fair" but did not think it would work. On the Israel-Palestine crisis, he wrote: "I have never seen two groups more unwilling to try and work out a solution … than these two groups."

In May 2024, amidst Israel's military onslaught of Gaza a piece of history went viral about former U.S. President John F. Kennedy's views on the history of the Middle East crisis.

Many posts on X claimed that Kennedy once stated, "Palestine was hardly Britain's to give away."

The purported quote did indeed come from a letter a young Kennedy wrote to his father in 1939 after he made a trip to Palestine, as seen in the archives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. However, it did not fully encapsulate his views of the British and their role in the relatively new crisis at the time. We rate this claim as "Correct Attribution" but will add necessary context below.

Writing to His Father

Kennedy, who was 21 at the time  of his visit, was writing to his father, Joseph P. Kennedy, the U.S. ambassador to London, who had sent his son on a study tour around Europe and Palestine. The elder Kennedy, according to Israeli news outlet Haaretz , had been following talks between the British government and Zionist and Arab leaders in London in the late 1930s , on future policy in Palestine. The discussions yielded no results and the British issued their own 1939 White Paper , which Kennedy went on to analyze.

The letter contains Kennedy's assessment of the crisis in the region, and begins with a summary of the history of the conflict. He stated he wanted to share his "impressions" of Palestine, addressing his father, "though you undoubtedly, if I know the Jews, know the 'whole' story." According to Haaretz , Kennedy was insinuating the troublesome nature of Zionist lobbyists.

Kennedy described how the British government made separate but vague promises to both the Jewish and Arab people, through the McMahon letters and the Balfour Declaration, that contradicted each other. He then stated his objection to the White Paper: "It theoretically presents a good solution, but it just won't work."

The White Paper planned to create a new independent government within 10 years. Its provisions stated immigration quotas for Jewish people arriving in Palestine, restrictions on land sales to Jewish people and constitutional measures to create a binational state under Arab majority rule that recognized that two peoples or nations resided within it and provisions to protect the rights of the Jewish minority.

Kennedy summarized the objections made by Arab and Jewish groups to the White Paper and concluded that it would just not work because neither group wanted it to work. The Arabs, he wrote, rejected it because of the vague timeline for implementation and as it allowed the continued influx of Jewish people in the region. The Jewish people, he wrote , saw the end to their Zionist dream of a state, their continued status as a minority group and an end to donations they received from abroad. Privately, he noted, the Arabs objected because the plan did not allow for the return of their exiled mufti, their political and religious leader, who was in Syria. The Jewish side objected, Kennedy wrote, because they wanted "complete domination, with Jerusalem as the capital of their new land of milk and honey, with the right to colonise in trans-Jordan."

The only solution, he wrote, was to "break the country up into two autonomous districts giving them both self-government" and keep Jerusalem as an "independent unit."

About the British

On the subject of the British, Kennedy appeared to be sympathetic to their position in the conflict. He wrote about his experiences in Jerusalem and how it made him more "pro-British" (emphasis ours):

At present, situation still seems to be difficult as far as outrages and bombings. There were 13 bombs set off my last evening there, all in the Jewish quarter and all set off by Jews. The ironical part is that the Jewish terrorists bomb their own telephone lines and electric connections and the next day frantically phone the British to come and fix them up. Incidentally I have become more pro-British down there than I have been in my other visits to England as I think that the men on the spot are doing a good job. This roughly, in fact very roughly, is an outline of the situation.

He concluded the paragraph with an indictment of both the Arab and Jewish groups: "I have never seen two groups more unwilling to try and work out a solution that has some hope of success than these two groups."

He described the "sympathy" of the "people on the spot" — perhaps referring to diplomats — with the Arabs, where the aforementioned quote in the claim emerges. He wrote (emphasis ours):

This is not only because the Jews have had, at least some of their leaders, an unfortunately arrogant, uncompromising attitude, but they feel that after all, the country has been Arabic for the last few hundred years, and they naturally feel sympathetic. After all, Palestine was hardly Britain's to give away. The question is further complicated by the fact that both groups are split among themselves.

The above excerpts from his letter indicate a largely sympathetic view of the British role in the conflict. He described their White Paper as a solution that would not be implementable, and called for two separate countries with their own governments.

As a politician, Kennedy was largely pro-Israel, affirming his commitment to U.S.-Israel ties while a senator in 1960. Analysts, however, said he managed to maintain cordial ties with the Arab world, and reportedly tried and failed to solve the Palestinian refugee crisis.

Trudeau touts democracy, freedom and trade ties in visit to Philadelphia

There is lots of work to do to fight for progressive values and workers on both sides of the Canada-United States border, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday during a trip to Philadelphia.

The trip arose through an invitation to speak at the quadrennial North American convention of the Service Employees International Union but a big chunk of his day was spent in meetings with politicians and business leaders, including vice-president Kamala Harris and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

It was his first trip south of the border since launching a new "Team Canada" charm offensive that renewed the sales approach that began during the first presidency of Donald Trump, when unpredictable trade decisions tested the U.S.-Canada relationship.

That approach sought out regular meetings beyond the White House, with members of the U.S. Congress, state governments, municipal leaders and business executives, all to ensure they understood and agreed that strong ties with Canada are beneficial on both sides of the border.

  • Capital Dispatch: Sign up for the latest in federal politics and why it matters

While the approach didn't die off altogether, it lost some steam after President Joe Biden won, providing the Liberals a U.S. government that shares more of its values and policies.

That closeness was evident Tuesday when both Trudeau and Harris delivered speeches to the SEIU that overlapped considerably, including discussions about making medicine cheaper, protecting abortion rights and raising wages.

Trudeau did not agree his presence was an implicit endorsement of Biden — he insists he is not picking sides in another country's election.

And Trudeau and Canada's ambassador in Washington, Kirsten Hillman, insist that Canada's approach would be the same with or without Trump on the ballot in November.

"This is a message that is relevant at any given time," Trudeau told reporters.

Trudeau deflected questions about how concerned he is by the possibility of a Trump presidency 2.0, saying what worked before should work again.

"One of the things we saw during Mr. Trump's first term was that the best argument as to why Canada shouldn't be hit with tariffs or punitively protectionist measures was that it would hurt American jobs as well," Trudeau said.

"That's why I pointed out today that here in Pennsylvania, Canada is the number one export partner for the state, greater than the next four foreign destinations combined."

Canada likes to point out that 7.8 million U.S. jobs depend on trade with Canada, while 2.2 million Canadian jobs depend on trade with the U.S.

He appeared to find a new ally in Shapiro, elected governor for the first time just two years ago but who is considered a rising Democratic party star in the U.S. with thoughts of running for the presidency in 2028.

The two shared a brief bilateral meeting before sharing the stage at a Canadian reception for Philadelphia business leaders, artists and academics.

Shapiro told Trudeau that he hoped to lead Pennsylvania to become the top renewable energy state in the U.S., following what he said was Canada's leadership on the file.

He even parroted one of Trudeau's favourite lines about diversity being a strength.

Both leaders touted the need to defend freedom and democracy from rising levels of misinformation, attacks against institutions and a growing sense of distrust among citizens of their leaders.

In his speech to thousands of delegates at the SEIU convention, Trudeau highlighted his government's record supporting unions but also gave them his pitch on the need for growing the U.S.-Canada relationship.

"At this moment of global crises and deep uncertainty, Canada and the United States know that we can count on each other," Trudeau said.

"Today, more than ever, we should remind ourselves of how priceless a partnership like ours is."

Americans are headed toward a presidential election that will be pivotal for both countries.

A potential return to the White House by Donald Trump brings back memories of the difficult bilateral relationship during his first term.

He has already promised to introduce a 10 per cent flat import tax on all countries if he wins a second time.

Trudeau and Hillman brushed off that threat to Canada Tuesday, saying the North American free trade agreement that was renegotiated under Trump's presidency at his demand, protects Canada from any such imposition.

Canada is the single biggest player for exports in the U.S. economy, representing almost one-fifth of total American exports. Mexico accounts for about one-sixth and China accounts of less than one-tenth.

But the U.S. is a much more dominant market for Canadian exports, accounting for 77 per cent of all Canadian exports in 2023, or almost $600 billion.
