For those who want to do their own independent bike tour of Copenhagen, in this article I have outlined the exact route and stops that I followed on my last Copenhagen trip.

I have embedded a map below, so that you can see exactly where to go and how long it will take. I have designed an efficient bike route, so that you don’t find yourself cycling back and forth around the city.

This Copenhagen self-guided bike itinerary covers all the main attractions in the city, meaning you won’t miss a thing! As you can see from the embedded map below, the route only takes 40 minute or so to cycle.

That gives you plenty of time throughout the day to take your time with each stop, visiting the beauties of Copenhagen and taking coffee and food breaks along the way.

I always love a good map, but where exactly will you be going? I included a bit more information on each stop, and why you should be adding them to your Copenhagen itinerary .

Start in Tivoli – With its historic wooden roller coaster among many other attractions, this amusement park is world famous. It even inspired Walt Disney to create his own amusement park; Disneyworld.

Christiansborg Palace – Just a short cycle up the road is this Christiansborg Palace, which is the seat of the Danish parliament. It’s one of the most beautiful buildings in the entire city.

It’s also surrounded by a beautiful park, so you can easily spend some time cycling around it either before or after visiting the castle.

Frederik’s Church – Known as the Marble Church, this impressive Baroque structure boasts the largest church dome in Northern Europe (you can get amazing views from up there, too!).

Amalienborg – The home of the Danish Royal Family, but it’s (partly) open to the public. You can visit and learn more about the history of the Danish Royal Family here.

Gefion Fountain – This landmark fountain, situated in Langelinie Park, is a really nice place to stop off for a spot of people watching.

Kastellet – Translating to “the Citadel”, this 17th-century fortress is a well-preserved star-shaped structure that still plays home to the Danish military to this day. Otherwise, it’s a tranquil place to hang out.

Little Mermaid – Nearby is arguably the most iconic sight in the whole city. You’ll find the statue of the Little Mermaid in human form, sitting on a rock gazing out to sea.

Comfortable shoes – Especially if you’re cycling, you’ll need a pair of comfortable shoes to get around the city.

Refillable water bottle – Tap water is good to drink in Copenhagen, so bring your own bottle to save money and plastic!

Umbrella – The weather in Copenhagen can be quite variable, so don’t forget to bring an umbrella with you!

Rain jacket – The same goes for a light rain coat. Better safe than sorry!

The copper roof you see today is comparatively recent - the original lead chosen by King Christian IV was removed to make cannonballs during the Swedish Occupation in 1658-9! Sadly, the entire building, including the spectacular tower, were engulfed in flames in April 2024 - a devastating accident for the people of Copenhagen.

Next on your bike tour is Nyhavn, the iconic rows of colorful buildings that line the canal. These charming buildings are predominantly townhouses and bars from the 17th and early 18th Centuries, and represent a quintessential Copenhagen backdrop.

Ride on to the Royal Danish Playhouse, which throws a resplendent reflection in the Frederiksstaden harborfront. Nearby, on the island of Holmen, you’ll find the Copenhagen Opera House, one of the most expensive venues of its kind ever built, at 2.5 billion DKK. Some of the materials used in this lavish building include Jura Gelb limestone, Sicilian Perlatino marble, maple wood, and gold leaf amounting to the equivalent of 1.5 kilos of gold!

Arriving at Amalienborg Palace, admire the official residence of the Danish Royal Family, comprising four palace facades in an octagonal courtyard wherein stands an enormous equestrian statue of King Frederick V, founder of Amalienborg. Your day tour moves on to the Marble Church, also known as Frederik’s Church. Likely inspired by the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, this resplendent rococo building is truly beautiful to behold. You’ll pedal next to the Langelinie promenade and park up your bicycle next to the iconic Little Mermaid, a brilliant bronze statue perched on a rock designed by Edvard Eriksen and depicting a mermaid becoming human.

There were 16 people on the tour which was too large a group. The entire group could not get through the lights together resulting in some crossing against the light even after being told the leader would wait. A little hard to hear the leader, but what she said was interesting.

Copenhagen and cycling are essentially synonymous— the two exist in harmony, a match made in heath heaven. Believe it or not, there are more bikes in the city than actual residents. The bike scene is brimming with enthusiasts, structural innovators, and people like me who enjoy leisure exercise and saving a few bucks from skipping the metro. We’re talkin’ exploring Copenhagen on a serious budget .

Copenhagen’s neighborhoods have endless miles of trails, but that doesn’t mean you should relegate yourself to city limits. If you really want to see Denmark, you should hit the road for a 29-mile day bike from Copenhagen to the northern port city of Helsingør. With plenty of sights to see and cozy Copenhagen cafés along the way, this is an unforgettable way to spend a day in Denmark.

Here’s our favorite one-day Copenhagen bike tour:

Head North to Bellevue Beach

New riders in Copenhagen might feel a bit intimidated by the organized professionalism of other riders, lanes, and social norms of riding. Rest assured, after a few trips through town you’ll be feeling like a local— or at least a little bit less of a blatant tourist. The infrastructure for cyclists is impeccable, making inexperienced riders feel welcome and safe on the roads. Bikes take precedence over cars, making your exit from city limits an enjoyable and uneventful experience.

Your first Copenhagen bike tour stop will be Hellerup Strand , a beach about 25-minutes into your ride. This spot is popular with locals and can attract quite the crowd on a sunny day. Sunshine is unpredictable in Denmark, so when it peeks through the clouds you can count on everyone to be outside making the most of it. Take a water break here, and grab a smoothie or ice cream from a beachside vendor.

If you simply can’t get enough of the beach, Bellevue Strandbad is on the way up the coast right after Hellerup. This beach has a park area, if you’re already hungry for a picnic lunch. Bike rides and beach hopping – what more do you need in life?

Grab a bite at Café Rosenhuset

As soon as you pass city limits, you’ll be in awe of the charming Danish countryside towns. Although they’re fairly close to the capital, towns along the way such as Skodsborg and Vedbæk will make you feel like you’re in an old-timey Scandinavian storybook.

Café Rosenhuset is a casual, airy café right on the beach in Vedbæk . They have a light lunch menu, along with a rotating variety of pastries. This endearing café is a perfect place to rest your legs – you’ve made it halfway! Take a seat on the second level and bask in the views of the cool blue waters of the Øresund straight. A slice of midday cheesecake (if available) won’t hurt either.

Stop at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

If you haven’t lingered too long at the beaches, take a break from your Copenhagen bike tour and stop to wander around the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art . This waterside art museum changes exhibits frequently, but always maintains an impressive collection of funky, avant-garde art. One of the more popular ongoing exhibits comes from Yayoi Kusama , a Japanese artist with a knack for mind-bending pieces. 

After checking out the indoor exhibits, make your way outside to the outdoor sculpture garden before jumping back on your bike.

Arrive in Helsingør for Kronborg Castle

After a long bike tour around Copenhagen with breezy beach stops and artful ventures, you’ll simply have to take a seat in front of one of Denmark’s magnificent 15 th century castles. Helsingør is Hamlet’s hometown, if you’re one of those Shakespeare types. Kronborg Castle can be explored from the outside, or you can go inside for a reasonable fee.

Helsingør’s cobblestone streets are a relaxing final destination, with colorful homes peppering the streets up and down. This historical hotspot is best explored on foot – so take a break and lock up your bike.

Trek it Back to Copenhagen

Ready for 29 more miles back to the city? You bet! If you’re lucky, you might catch some sunset shades while you meander back down the coast. If you’re feeling a bit exhausted from the day, you can hop on the train with your bike and ride back as a passenger, with ease. Get on the Öresundståg Line at Helsingør Street, and you’ll arrive at Copenhagen’s Central Station in a little under an hour.

The last item on your Copenhagen bike tour agenda is to enjoy an ice-cold Carlsberg or Tuborg beer back in city center – two of Copenhagen’s finest!

Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield has explained the anxiety he faced before hitting the road with the heavy metal titans last month.

Hetfield, who’s been fronting Metallica across Europe since late May, opened up on a new episode of official podcast The Metallica Report , where he expressed self-doubt due to his age and revealed he suffered from nightmares before starting the tour.

“I start to doubt myself,” Hetfield confessed (as transcribed by Metal Injection ), “[thinking,] ‘We're old, we can’t do this’ – all that bullshit everyone tells themselves before they go into something they care about.”

Moving onto his nightmares, Hetfield continued: “So, having the nightmares about how I’m the only one who cares about what we're doing here: ‘Where is everybody?’

“I show up at the gig, everyone’s goofing off, or there’s 200 people backstage and thinking, ‘Where’s my stuff? Where’s the setlist? What songs are we doing?’

“And then, typical things like the guitar neck is made of rubber, and there are only two strings on it. And, ‘Where's my roadie?’, and the guitar cord won’t let me get to the microphone. Silly stuff like that.

“That has to happen, and I don’t freak out over it. All you do is you practice, and then you build that comes back pretty quickly.”

Hetfield finished by discussing how he manages his anxieties: “It’s part of the cycle; it just is.

“You have anxiety build up, and don’t let it get the best of ya because you have that balance of anxiety and faith. And as soon as you get up there, it’s all gonna be good.”

Metallica started their current tour in Munich, Germany, on May 24, where they overcame rainstorms and a video tower being struck by lightning to put on their show.

The band will next perform at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland, on June 7 and 9.
