Copenhagen cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-06-01 08:00

Port Copenhagen cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Copenhagen, Denmark. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Copenhagen Malmo Port (abbrev CMP) is a major turnaround cruise port in Northern Europe and among the most popular departure/homeports for Baltic Sea itineraries. Among those are the roundtrips to Norwegian Fjords (along Norway's western coastline) and Scandinavia (visiting ports in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Russia). Cruises leaving out of Copenhagen comprise ~45% of the ship calls. Copenhagen is also a significant port of call on Christmas holiday voyages  leaving from UK ports.

In April 2017, the Swedish Maritime Administration permitted Copenhagen Malmo Port to receive large-sized cruise vessels. The previous constraint on ships visiting Malmo was for vessels with LOA length 240 m (787 ft).

In 2016-Q3 were carried out extensive simulations in Gothenburg Sweden in order to ascertain whether it's possible Port Malmo to handle larger-sized vessels. Simulations were conducted over several days with different types of vessels in different weather conditions and wind forces. A total of 18 berthings (dockings) were performed. The conclusion was that it is possible ships to maneuver in the cruise port at max speed 3 kn (5,6 kph / 3,5 mph) and side winds up to 36 kph (22 mph) without any pilot boat assistance. However, there is a wind speed restriction during maiden ship visits - 29 kph (18 mph). The newly allowed max LOA length for cruise ships in Port Malmo is 300 m (985 ft).

In early-October 2019, CMP and the Danish company DFDS Seaways signed a deal to construct a shoreside power facility at Indiakaj/Sondre Frihavn (free port). By this project (inaugurated on October 26, 2021), two DFDS-owned cruiseferries ( Crown Seaways and Pearl Seaways ) were able to receive dockside electricity (from the city's power grid) when berthed. Both ships were deployed on the Norway-Denmark route Oslo -Copenhagen. For the project were contracted Actemium SAS (Sweden, parent company VINCI Energies SA//design and building) and COWI AS (Denmark/technical advisor). Shore power for cruise ships in Copenhagen is available since 2024. The other Danish cruise port with shore power capabilities is Aarhus (since 2023).

In May 2024 started the construction of Port Copenhagen's second shore power facility planned for completion in 2025. By design, it can provide electricity to two cruise ships docking simultaneously at Oceankaj and Langelinie (via 2 out of 5 connection points) with max power supply capacity 16 MVA. For the Port's second/newest shore power facility were contracted Entreprenorfirmaet Nordkysten AS (construction company) and PowerCon AS (engineering and manufacturing company).

Cruise itineraries to and from Copenhagen Denmark

Follows a list of destinations visited by cruise ships leaving out of Copenhagen:

  • Roundtrip Baltic cruise itineraries leaving from Copenhagen visit Norway (Norwegian Fjords), Scandinavia and Russia (overnight stay in St Petersburg ), Iceland (with Faroe Islands). Most round-trips from Copenhagen are to Norway (7-days in length) operated during summer.
  • Transatlantic crossings on repositioning cruises from Copenhagen to USA and Canada-New England are one-way itineraries offered at the end of the season (late August and September). These are westbound ship relocation routes and often include stops in Iceland and Greenland, also in UK (England, Scotland, Ireland) and end in NYC New York .

Ship relocation voyages (Baltic to Mediterranean) leaving from Copenhagen are offered mostly by Costa and MSC ships, repositioning to their turnaround ports in Italy ( Savona , Genoa , Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice ).

The ship replaced here the smaller  Norwegian Star and carries nearly 1000 more passengers (3957, max capacity 4819). The new deployment resulted in ~36,000 more cruise passenger movements for the port. Ship disembarkation is between 7-11 am, and the afternoon embarkation starts in 12-noon till 5 pm (departure). In that time period, the cruise port handles ~12,000 suitcases, 15 large trucks deliver provisions for the cruise vessel, 40 tour buses serve the passengers, together with around 800 taxis, plus public transportation (bus, train, metro). According to Copenhagen Malmo Port's CEO, the increased NCL cruise passenger number generated additional revenue of around EUR 7,3 million (USD 8,7 million).
  • In 2017, the port reported a record year with handled 325 cruise ship calls (by 72 different vessels and 36 companies) and 849,000 passengers. Of all visits (16% increase over 2016), 153 were turnaround/roundtrips. Of all the 72 ships, 55 were large-sized.
  • (statistics 2018) the port handled 346 ship calls and ~850,000 cruise passengers.

In 2019, the Port had scheduled 352 ship calls (including 165 turnarounds) with estimated 750,000+ cruisers and economic impact ~EUR 200 million. On May 20th were handled 6 liners with ~24,000 passengers (plus 8000 crew). Malmo Port's largest cruise vessel so far is MSC Meraviglia (capacity 4488 passengers plus 1536 crew). In 2019, the liner visited Copenhagen 22 times.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 the cruise port handled 326 ship calls (out of Denmark's 592 total).

In 2023, the Port had booked 290 cruise ship berthings (out of Denmark's 432 total) including 9 maiden/first-time visits. In 2023, CMP (Malmo+Copenhagen=Visby) handled 389 cruise ship calls and ~940,000 tourists.

Copenhagen cruise terminal

The largest Copenhagen passenger terminal is Freeport Cruise Terminal, located north of downtown, in an industrial harbour. It is used by most major cruise lines and offers cafes, food kiosks, restrooms, Wi-Fi Internet, waiting lounge. Travel time from the cruise port to downtown Copenhagen is 1 hour (walk) and 20 min (shuttle bus or taxi). Copenhagen International Airport is 30 min from the terminal (shuttle bus or taxi).

The second cruise ship terminal is Langelinie. The pier is located 3 kn (2 mi) from downtown, close to the Little Mermaid statue.

The Langelinie is not a typical cruise terminal. The wharf has information centre and stores (near old warehouses). The shops sell jewelry, Danish clogs, porcelain, clothes, amber. Most city highlights are close for a walk. Often, cruise lines offer shuttle bus service to downtown Copenhagen. Alternative way is bus line 26.

Copenhagen-Oceankaj (Free Port) cruise terminals

Port Copenhagen has 3 cruise ship terminals - Freeport Terminals (Malmo Port), Langelinie Terminal, and Nordre Toldbod Terminal.

  • Free Port Cruise Terminal is in an industrial harbor area located north of downtown. It is used by major cruise line ships and has fast food kiosks, cafes, waiting lounge. Free Port Malmo terminal building is a converted warehouse (sized 2400 m2 / 25800 ft2) and was inaugurated on May 1, 2014.
  • Langelinie Pier (quay berths C190-199, no terminal building) is 3 km / 2 mi away from downtown. The wharf is used by large ships visiting Copenhagen as call of port. The pier has an info centre. Several stores are located nearby and sell traditional Danish souvenirs, jewellery, clothes.
  • At Nordre Toldbod quay's berth (C177) dock mainly smaller ships and luxury megayachts.

Cruise ships leaving out of Copenhagen (departure port) dock at the old Free Port Terminal (Orientkaj berths C252, C254, and the Levantkaj berth C266) and at the new Oceankaj (berths C331, C332, C333).

In 2015 was opened the new pier at Nordhavn - Oceankaj (Ocean Quay). The new quay (berth C330) has pier length 1100 m (3600 ft), width 70 m (230 ft) and can accommodate 3 large liners simultaneously.

There are 4 buildings - Terminal 1 (quay C331), Terminal 2 (quay C332), Terminal 3 (quay C333) and Terminal 4 (quay C334). Each building is sized 3300 m2 / 35500 ft2, including 1800 m2 / 19400 ft2 passenger handling area, 1500 m2 / 16150 ft2 luggage handling area, solar-paneled roofs (800 m2 / 8600 ft2 solar panels providing all the power needed for the terminals).

Oceankaj terminals also have dedicated waste-water handling facilities (capacity up to 300 m3 per hour per ship). The new pier has connection points at every 60 m / 200 ft. The Copenhagen port's Oceankaj cruise terminals project cost around USD 100 million. The southernmost part of the complex was built on existing land (the remainder required landfill).

(NEW) Oceankaj Cruise Terminal

A new cruise terminal (at Oceankaj) is currently under construction, with initially scheduled completion in April 2022. However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the project was postponed.

The new terminal has daily passenger capacity 5000, quay length 370 m (1214 ft), water depth 12 m (39 ft). The 2-story terminal building is sized 10000 m2 (107640 ft2) and connects with the docked vessels via 2x gangways (mobile passenger bridges).

Cruise ship terminal directions and parking

  • Taxis are available at the Oceankaj Pier. The easiest way to get to the pier is by taxi. For call port stops at Oceankaj, the shipping lines usually provide bus shuttles to downtown (stopping in front of St Peter's Church). The shuttle service is the preferable choice since public transportation options at Ocean Quay are limited.
  • Bus line 26 has a bus stop in Sundkrogsgade - some 50 m / 70 ft outside the port's entrance. Bus 26 service (to/from the port) is not available on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • The Free Port Terminals piers Levantkaj and Orientkaj are at 10-15 min walking distance from the Nordhavn S-Tog (commuter rail) train station. Trains leave from Nordhavn Station every 5 min (going to Central Station). Tickets must be bought at the train station.
  • In 2015 was opened a new Bus 25 route (between Norreport and Oceankaj) that runs only when cruise ships are docked.
  • Bus 27 route (Osterport Station to Oceankaj) service is between 6 am to 7 pm (Monday to Friday) and between 8 am to 6 pm (on weekends).

From Central Station, the Copenhagen Airport (CPH, international airport) is accessible via the regular rail network and the city metro (from Kongens Nytorv, a 3-zone ticket is needed). Take the metro to Norreport Station, then transfer to Bus 25 or (if not operational) take the S-Tog (commuter rail) one stop to Osterport. Cross the tracks via the pedestrian overpass to the Bus 27 stop or take the S-Tog to Nordhavn (from the station continue by taxi).

Copenhagen Malmo Port ("Kobenhavn" in Danish), along with its cruise terminals also has passenger ferry terminals, container terminal and drydock facilities for major marine vessel refurbishments and shiprepairs.

  • port address - "Containervej 9, PO Box 900, Copenhagen, DK 2150 Nordhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark"
  • UN-LOCODE (United Nations location code) - DKCPH.
  • supported by excellent road, rail and air infrastructure
  • deep water berths
  • capacity to accommodate up to 10 liners at a time
  • up to 3 large ships can berth alongside a quay (length 1100 m / 3600 ft)
  • mobile luggage units, conveyor belts, forklifts, guests and luggage screening equipment
  • freshwater supply (quay outlets, water barges)
  • the season runs from late March through late October, plus off-season with calls in December (during the Christmas and New Year holidays).

Cruise ships usually arrive in Copenhagen in the early morning (5, 6:30, 7, 8, 8:30, 9 AM) and depart from Copenhagen in the late afternoon (4, 5, 5:30, 6 PM) or in the evening (8 or 10 pm with overnight stays in port).

Port Copenhagen is located at 20 min drive distance away from the city centre. The Copenhagen International Airport is at some 10 km / 6 mi (or 30 min drive distance) away from the cruise port.

Monthly Climate Averages for Copenhagen

Sightseeing:

Copenhagen is a charming city of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, beautiful parks and gardens, pretty promenades along canals, and ancient winding streets made for walking and biking. Add to that the longer days and warmer weather in the summer.

Highlights include: The Little Mermaid, a smaller statue than you think. Nyhavn, it's full of cafes, bars, and restaurants, Tivoli Garden , is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Christiansborg Palace , Amalienborg Palace .

The city's architecture soars from medieval to rococo, and style varies from eclecticism to the cool designs of Arne Jacobsen. The impact Danes have had on the world of contemporary interiors is second only to their expertise in fairy tales.

On forehand you may purchase online via the tourist office the Copenhagen Card which entitles you to free entry to 60 museums and attractions as well as free transport by train, bus and Metro (also to and from the airport), discounts on restaurants, car hire, and many attractions and includes a comprehensive guide.

Note: Some museums have free admission anyway and most don't charge entry fees on Wednesdays.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

One way to make sure that you do not miss any of Copenhagen's major sights and landmarks are to take one of the numerous organized tours of the city, either by bus, bike or boat. Caution: Most canal tours are on open-air vessels, and therefore are not recommended for inclement weather.`

In a hurry: Take the harbor water bus (901/902) from either The Royal Library also called the black diamond for its sun/water reflections to Nordre Tloldbod, close to the Little Mermaid or vice versa for the price of a regular bus ticket. Every 20 minutes: a 15-minute tour of all waterfront highlights!

The Hop on/off buses of CitySightseeing are always present at all cruise terminals and offer 3 tours in and around Copenhagen.

Rent a City Bike for free: just deposit a coin of 20 Kroner, take your bike, and drop it off after you are finished at any point and get your money back.

Public transportation is very good.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Just to the north, along the Øresund coast, stretch a series of well-heeled suburbs: a visit to their attractions – the Danish Aquarium , Experimentarium and Bakken amusement park among them – can be followed up by lazing on the adjacent beaches.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated 35 km north of Copenhagen on the North Zealand coast in a spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden.

Malmo Sweden: Take a 35 minute train trip over the spectacular Oresund Brige .

Shopping and Food

In the old center the Strøget area is actually a collection of pedestrian streets, filled with shops, cafes and restaurants, that spread out from this central thoroughfare. These streets are between the large squares, east in Kogens Nytorv and west in Radhuspladsen (The City Hall Square). You won't find the name Stroget on the street signs or on city maps, but if you ask a Copenhagener where to find Stroget, you will probably get a clear answer.

Eating and drinking out is quite expensive, but the possibilities are endless: from red hot Thai curries to traditional 'frikadeller' (Danish meatballs), from sushi to the typical smørrebrød, which are served at lunch: these open sandwiches have all kinds of savory toppings, typically including boiled egg and dill, beetroot, mackerel, roast onions, cold meats and goose or pork dripping. There are also takeaway smørredbrød kiosks throughout the city center.

For shopping mall addicts, there is Fields. Fields has its own Metro Station: Take the Metro in the direction of Vestamager and get off at the station Ørestad, then you are right at the main entrance to Field's.

Denmark has the highest Tax (VAT) rate in Europe: 25% on everything!

Denmark is not part of the EURO-monetary system, but major shops will probably give prices both in Danish kroner and in EURO (€). Most major international credit cards are accepted in Denmark. But be aware that a surcharge of 2 to 4 percent is often added, which is legal outside the USA.

Nyhavn Copenhagen

Welcome to Copenhagen cruise port!

Conveniently nestled in the Baltic Sea, Denmark’s capital city is considered the coziest country in Northern Europe and has been ranked as one of the happiest cities in the world. The city is renowned for its fairytale historic castles, modern architecture, delectable cuisine, and a variety of things do to. In this article, read about:

Copenhagen Cruise Port

Copenhagen cruise port – Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), consists of three cruise ship terminals: Ocean Quay (Oceankaj), Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod .

1. Ocean Quay

Ocean Quay is located in the north of Copenhagen, approximately 8 km/5 miles (a 20-minute drive) from the city center. This harbor is the furthest one from the city center and the busiest one as it has 4 berths (Ocean Quay 331-334) that are normally used for turnarounds or larger cruise ships .

Depending on the berth assigned to your ship, you will find a Tourist information center where you can pick up some free city maps, luggage check-in and waiting areas, a few souvenir shops, restrooms, and if you are lucky free Wi-Fi as well.

2. Langelinie Pier

Langelinie Pier 190-198 is located only 3.5 km/2.2 miles away from the city center and it’s normally used by smaller cruise ships. There is no cruise terminal building here but there are several souvenir shops, a few cafes, and a Tourist information center.

From this pier, you can take a pleasant 30-minute walk along the scenic Langelinie promenade to the city center. The promenade is lined with shops and cafes, and here you can see the iconic bronze Little Mermaid statue, inspired by the main character from H.C. Andersen’s fairytale, a work of sculptor Edvard Eriksen.

3. Nordre Toldbod

Also known as Københavns Havn, this terminal is located a 15-minute walk from the Lingelinie pier and a 10-15 minute walk from the main city attractions.

It is located in a beautiful waterfront area backed by the 17th-century Kastellet fortress overlooking the old harbor. Smaller ships, luxury megayachts, and ferries normally dock here.

Getting Around & Local Transportation

  • Cruise lines normally offer a convenient shuttle service to downtown for a nominal fee and it’s recommended to purchase the tickets in advance onboard the ship.
  • The official currency in Denmark is the Danish Crown (Danish Krona – DKK). 1 DKK equals 0.13€.  Euros and US dollars are only accepted in a few souvenir stores. Credit cards are widely accepted. See the currency converter
  • The cruise terminals are well connected to Copenhagen downtown. Public transport is very convenient and the cheapest option to get around the city. Tickets are valid for all forms of Copenhagen transportation (buses, metro trains, trains, harbor boat buses) and allow unlimited transfers during the period of validity. A two-zone ticket covers the transportation from all cruise terminals to the city center and vice versa. Tickets can be purchased directly at ticket machines at stations (cash or credit card) or from bus drivers (cash only).
  • From Oceankaj terminal (Ocean Quay), you can take bus line 27 to Østerport Station . This bus runs two to four times per hour. The return bus departs from the east side of Østerport train station. Make sure you catch a bus displaying Oceankaj as the final destination because only these buses stop at the passenger cruise terminal. During summer, bus line 25 is usually available from Oceanskaj to Nørreport Station , which is the best option if you want to walk into the city or catch a connecting transfer to other locations. Make sure you purchase the tickets at the ticket machine in the terminal before boarding a bus.
  • From Langelinie pier you take a pleasant 5-minute walk along the promenade to the Little Mermaid statue, another 10 minutes to Nordre Toldbod, and then 10 minutes more to the city center – a beautiful walk along the waterfront or through the Kastellet fortress. Østerport station is located a 20-minute walk from Langelinie dock.
  • If you want to take a bus, there is bus line 27 that takes you from Langeliniekaj to the Østerport station . This bus runs every 20 minutes, and the bus ride lasts 10 minutes. On the way back, make sure you catch bus line 27 with Færgeterminal Søndre Frihavn as the final destination (if you take the one displaying Oceankaj, that will take you to the Oceankaj terminal). Always double-check with a driver, though, because some buses might stop at Indiakaj, located a few blocks away from the cruise terminal.
  • Taxis in Copenhagen are metered and can be paid in local currency or by credit card. Make sure to confirm your payment method in advance.
  • Copenhagen is a bike-friendly city and if you want to feel like a local it is very easy to rent a bicycle and explore the city on two wheels.
  • When the passenger cruise ships are in port, Copenhagen Hop on Hop off sightseeing buses are normally available at the terminals. Upon booking you can choose which route you would like to take (Classic Tour, All Lines Tour, Colorful Copenhagen Route, Urban Copenhagen Route). The tickets are usually valid for 72 hours and include stops at around 30 points of interest. Check out Copenhagen Hop on Hop off bus tours on Viator and Get Your Guide
  • Copenhagen Card will give you access to 80 different attractions and museums as well as free transport in the city. Book a Copenhagen card
  • Strøget pedestrian street located in the heart of Copenhagen is the main shopping area – from local souvenir shops, high-end stores, and small boutiques, you will find something for everyone here! Strøget is located approximately 20 minutes walk from Østerport station and a 25-minute walk from the Nordre Toldbod terminal.

The home of the Royal Danish Family is located in the center of Copenhagen. The 18th-century Rococo Royal complex consists of four different palaces, two of which are open to the public.

The Levetzau’s Palace (Christian VIII’s Palace) houses the Amalienborg Museum with access to the impressive Faberge Chamber, the ground floor, and the Piano Nobile.

The Moltke Palace (Christian VII’s Palace), the most expensive of the four palaces due to the extravagant interiors, was used for receptions and ceremonial purposes. This palace is open for guided tours when the Royal Family is not present.

Amalienborg complex of Royal Palaces

Amalienborg Museum is wheelchair accessible. I strongly suggest you book your tickets ahead of time to secure your spot and avoid lines and waiting.

If your time in Copenhagen is limited, I suggest admiring this beautiful palace from the outside and do not miss the change of guards happening every day at noon.

Located in the heart of the city, this romantic castle was built by Christian IV in the 17 th century and is considered one of the prettiest castles in Copenhagen.

Rosenborg Castle - Copenhagen

The Castle is home to the museum exhibiting the Royal Collections from the late 16th to the 19th centuries and the Royal treasury displaying the Crown Jewels and the Danish Royal Regalia. If you wish to explore outside the city center, head to Northern Europe’s largest Renaissance Castle and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kronborg Castle, located in the town of Helsingør approximately a 1-hour drive from Copenhagen cruise port.

This 15th-century Renaissance castle is said to be the setting for William Shakespeare’s famous play Hamlet.

Kronborg Castle

To reach Kronborg you will need to take a train from Copenhagen Central Station to Helsingør (Elsinore) and then walk approximately 15-20 minutes to the Castle. One Trip at a Time

WELCOME TO COPENHAGEN

The sheer number of candles being used (the Danes burn more than any other country) and the sense of simplicity and comfort are in evidence around the city. A few days in Copenhagen can certainly get you hooked on the Danish obsession with Hygge.

With attractions across the city from Royal Palaces to fun-filled amusement parks, unfathomably popular statues to the colourful Nyhavn district as well as learning a little about how to make your life more Hygge, there is much to suggest that an extra day or two before or after your cruise is well worth it.

COPENHAGEN CRUISE TERMINAL

There are three cruise ports in Copenhagen so it is important to know which terminal your cruise ship will be using or you might be heading to the wrong one. In general, if you are joining a cruise it is likely to be from Oceankaj, Nordre Tolbod and Langelinje are more used for visiting ships.

If you are using a GPS or map program (we use   Here WeGo ), input one of the following addresses to find your terminal:

Ocean Quay : Oceankaj Terminal 1/2/3, Nordhavnen, 2150 København

Nordre Tolbod : Nordre Toldbod, 1259 København

Langelinje: Langeliniekaj 2, 2100 København

Also scheduled for completion in 2020 is Terminal 4 at Oceankaj which will allow for larger ships to depart from Copenhagen.

PASSENGER & LUGGAGE DROP OFF

EMBARKATION:   Passengers may drop off their luggage, and companions if they wish, at their designated terminal prior to parking.

DISEMBARKATION:   When returning you can either retrieve your vehicle and return to the terminal to pick up your companions and luggage in the loading area, or take your luggage and companions to your parking lot to retrieve your vehicle.

The area next to the cruise terminal is for loading and unloading only so you should be prepared to unload/load quickly to allow others to do the same.

TAXIS : As to be expected there is a high demand for taxis during peak disembarkation hours and they may not be readily available. Please account for this wait time in your plans for departure day, especially when booking a flight home.

MONEY MATTERS

The currency of Denmark is the Krone (DKK) which is divided into 100 øre. It is printed on notes in the following denominations: kr50, kr100, kr200, kr500, and kr1000 and coins with values of: 50 øre, kr1, kr2, kr5, kr10, and kr20. The 50 øre coin is worth half a kroner and is the only Danish coin with a face value of less than one kroner.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS

Credit and Debit cards are widely accepted in Copenhagen, but cards which do not use Chip & Pin may not be accepted in self-service machines and may cause delays in shops and restaurants. Contactless cards are more and more widely accepted for purchases up to 350 DKK.

TOP TIP: If you are offered the opportunity to pay in your own currency instead of Danish Kroner, our advice is to decline as the exchange rate is usually poor and you will end up paying more than letting your bank handle the conversion.

Although tipping is the norm in North America and common in much of Europe, in Denmark tipping is not expected. In general, service will be included in restaurants, bars and taxis, you should therefore only tip if you receive extraordinarily good service.

If you do decide to offer a tip, you will probably need to leave cash as credit card machines are less likely to have the option to add a tip than you may be used to.

BANKS & ATMS

Finding an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) will not be too difficult in Copenhagen, however none are right by the terminals. We’ve pinned several ATMs that are nearest to the terminals to the map below.

Generally, in Denmark, you will find ATMs at banks as well as some standalone machines either outside or inside other stores.

GETTING AROUND COPENHAGEN

Public transport in Copenhagen is efficient and affordable, you just need to know how many zones you will transit through in order to price up your ticket. The whole of the central area of the city, including the ports, is in zone 1 and the airport is in zone 4. Therefore to get from the airport to the city, you travel through 3 zones (4, 3 and 1), so you need a three-zone ticket. You have to buy at least 2 zones for any ticket, so any travel around the city would require a 2 zone ticket.

A single ticket for 1 or 2 zones is 24 DKK, a three-zone ticket is 36 DKK. You can purchase tickets at ticket vending machines, 7-Eleven kiosks, stations using cash or card. You can buy single tickets from the bus driver, but you must have the correct small change. You can also use the ‘DOT Tickets’ app on your phone:

Google Play

If you plan to use the public transport network more than occasionally each day, you can purchase  City Pass Small  for unlimited travel within the City including out to the airport for between 1 and 5 days which can save you money. Prices 80 DKK for one day, 150 DKK for two days and an additional 50 DKK for each day after that.

TOP TIP:  If buying a ticket from a train station, you won’t be able to enter a bus stop name as your destination. Choose the metro station you will change at and the ticket will be accepted by the bus driver.

Public transportation options include:

  • Metro   – Provides access across the city on three lines including the airport. Click here for the routes, hours, and pricing or here for the MDT Tracker app.
  • Train  – The train is a quick efficient way to get from the airport into the central station, but can also be a good option for getting across the city.
  • Bus   – With routes across the city, the bus service is an excellent way to get around and end up close to your destination.
  • Harbour bus – Can be a nice option if you need to travel along the river, may not be as quick as other options, but a great way to see the city from the water.

Other options in the city include:

  • Bike   – Copenhagen is great for cyclists and you can rent bikes from many places in the city. You may even find your hotel has them available to borrow. For more information, check out this guide .
  • e-scooter – These scooters can be found all over town and can be rented through an app to get you around the city in double-quick time.

Note: Uber and Lyft do not operate in Copenhagen due to local regulations.

With all these options you will be able to really take in Copenhagen if you visit for a pre or post-cruise stay!

TOP TIP: The  Copenhagen Card  can be purchased with unlimited public transport included, saving you even more money.

An arrangement of different types of Copenhagen cuisine plated together

Copenhagen is a food lover’s paradise, known for its Scandinavian cuisine and gourmet delights. With 23 Michelin stars spread across 14 restaurants, it’s no wonder that Copenhagen is considered the culinary capital of Scandinavia.

When exploring the local cuisine, be sure to try some classic Danish dishes such as licorice candy, red sausage (known as rød pølse), and open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød). For a unique dining experience, don’t miss out on tasting the famous shooting star ( stjerneskud ) or the flavorful Danish meatballs (frikadeller).

And if you’re craving something hearty, indulge in roast pork (flæskesteg) or creamy rice pudding. There are numerous dining options near Copenhagen Cruise Port, where you can experience authentic Danish food.

Some popular choices include Restaurant Tio Marios , Riva Bistro & Bar , Veve , and Koan . Whether you’re looking for quick bites or full-service dining experiences, Copenhagen has many great options for delicious food.

Make sure to leave room for pastries during your visit. They are known worldwide for their quality and taste. Danish pastries are a must-try.

Shopping Opportunities

Copenhagen offers a range of shopping opportunities near the cruise port. Whether you’re looking for high-end fashion boutiques or unique souvenirs, you’ll find it all within walking distance.

Explore the trendy stores and exclusive boutiques to discover fashion-forward items from independent designers. Local artisans also sell their work in gift shops, allowing you to take home one-of-a-kind treasures from your trip.

Local Currency

The local currency of Denmark is the Danish Krone (DKK). The currency is divided into smaller units called øre.

Denmark’s prices can be higher than other European destinations, so it’s a good idea to understand the exchange rate and how much things generally cost.

In Copenhagen, while some establishments may accept Euros or US dollars, it is not a common practice. It is recommended to have Danish Kroner on hand for your visit, as cash payment is expected. Currency exchange can be done at banks and exchange offices, often located in post offices, or you can withdraw cash from ATMs throughout the city.

Remember to carry small bills and coins, as many places prefer cash over card payments for smaller purchases like public transportation fares and street food vendors.

Safety Tips

Following the guidelines set by the Danish Health Authorities and the EMSA guide on cruise operations, these precautions will help protect your health and well-being throughout your trip.

Take note of popular areas with large crowds, such as Strøget, as well as the main transportation hubs of Copenhagen Central Station and Nørreport.

Although Copenhagen was named one of the safest cities in the world, as you explore the city’s attractions, always keep a close eye on your belongings. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewelry that may attract unwanted attention.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Copenhagen for warm-weather outdoor activities is from late June to late August. During these months, the city experiences its peak summer season, with average temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius.

This is also the most popular period for cruise ship visits, so you can expect a dynamic atmosphere and plenty of tourist attractions to explore. If you’re looking for the warmest time of year in Copenhagen, plan your trip from late June to September when temperatures are at their highest.

The easiest way to get from the cruise port to the city center is to take a free shuttle service, arrange transportation in advance with your cruise line, or book a pre-booked shore excursion.

You can walk into parts of Copenhagen from the cruise ship. Depending on which cruise terminal your ship docks at will depend on how long your walk is.

The Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod cruise terminals are the closest to the city and are about a 10-minute from the famous Little Mermaid statue.

However, the Ocean Quay, often called Oceankaj Terminal, is a bit further away and takes about an hour’s walk to get to the Little Mermaid statue.

However, if you are looking to explore the heart of the city, I would recommend taking public transportation or the metro line to get into town from any of the cruise terminals.

Public transportation is the fastest and most reliable option to get to the city center from your cruise ship, besides free shuttle services offered by some cruise lines.

Another way to travel between the two is by taking the metro line. You will need to make sure that you secure a valid 3-zone ticket for this option.

If you are going to the Ocean Quay cruise terminal, you must take the yellow line to Kongens Nytorv. From there, you will switch to the blue line and get off at Orientkaj Station.

You will then need to walk about 3.21 km (2 miles) to the cruise terminal. This process usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour.

Where is located the Port of Copenhagen Cruise Terminal

Copenhagen offers two large port facilities. The first, more widely visited by ships making day calls, is Langelinie Pier about 2.4 km from the centre of the city. This is a charming harbour area, with a series of shops and cafes, just a 10 minute walk from the city (taxis are also available). The Copenhagen Information Centre is located here and can also offer exchange office (and distributor) services.

On the other hand, the Freeport terminal , about 3.2 km from the city, is frequently used by ships for which Copenhagen is a port of embarkation or disembarkation. There is no service or ATM nearby (although taxis often take credit cards). The nearest train to reach the city is a 15-20 minute walk. As this port is busy, taxis are sometimes scarce. It’s best to plan your trips before you leave or take advantage of your cruise line transfer services. You can also book a private transfer .

The city of Copenhagen is spread across two large islands, called Zealand and Amager, and connected to southern Sweden via the Öresund Bridge. When your Copenhagen cruise ship docks, you’ll arrive at a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a bustling harbor, renowned restaurants, and gorgeous historical architecture.

A stop in Copenhagen makes for a fabulous day in port while on a cruise to Scandinavia and to Northern Europe’s capitals. Don’t forget to try a Danish brew and sample local eats at a food hall while you’re here

Top sights & attractions for cruises to copenhagen, rosenborg castle.

To gaze at some Renaissance splendor, spend part of your day touring Copenhagen’s Rosenborg Castle, which is home to the crown jewels and surrounded by sprawling garden scenery.

Copenhagen Opera House

The Copenhagen Opera House’s modern, futuristic design features a streamlined exterior and a roof canopy that resembles a wide-brimmed hat. Inside its sleek interior, you’ll find a marble foyer and gleaming gold-plated auditorium roof. Positioned next to the water, the opera house encompasses 41,000 square meters and stands 14 stories tall. The award-winning design was created by local architect Henning Larsen.

Christiansborg Palace

Christiansborg Palace is an impressive structure that dates back to 1733 and features Baroque Revival architecture. Its defining characteristic is the tall tower in its center. Christiansborg Palace is located on a small islet within Copenhagen’s city limits, which gives it a powerful-looking position fitting for a structure that houses the Danish Prime Minister’s Office and Supreme Court of Denmark as well as the seat of the Danish Parliament.

Little Mermaid Statue

Anyone who loves the Hans Cristian Andersen tale of a mermaid who longs to live on land (or has seen the animated movie of the same name) will love seeing Copenhagen’s iconic Little Mermaid Statue. The statue features a mermaid sculpted by Edvard Eriksen in 1913, which was placed atop a rock in the water by the Langelinie Promenade.

Top Things to Do in Copenhagen

Visit the national history museum.

Copenhagen’s National History Museum is located in a historic, 70-room castle with beautiful Renaissance-style interiors. While touring the museum, you’ll see the ornate golden paneling of the Knight’s Hall, as well as the Coronation Chapel, where some of Denmark’s past kings were anointed.

Have Fun at Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens is one of the defining landmarks of Copenhagen. In addition to gorgeous gardens worthy of a stroll, you’ll find a seasonal theme park complete with rides, games, and one of the world’s tallest chain carousels.

Explore Nyhavn

Nyhavn means “new harbor” in English, which is a fitting name for this popular Copenhagen neighborhood. Located next to a canal where you can still see old wooden ships docked, its history dates back centuries. Gorgeous 17th and 18th century houses that host a variety of eateries, many of which have pleasant outdoor seating areas, frame the picturesque canal. For more Hans Christian Andersen history, pay attention to the house numbers of 18, 20, and 67, since Andersen lived in each one.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Copenhagen Cruise Port

When spending a day in the Copenhagen cruise port, you’ll likely want to try some local cuisine, and one of the best places to do so is Torvehallerne. Located right by Nørreport Station, Torvehallerne is a bustling food hall that serves a wide variety of local specialties. It’s a great way to try small bites of many different types of Danish cuisine. You’ll also find groceries and fresh produce sold here. For street food vendors, visit Refshaleøen at Reffen where most of them congregate. It’s a bit of a trek to get to from the cruise port, but the delicious food at great prices makes it worth the journey.

Copenhagen has a thriving beer scene. Expect to pay around 30 kr for a large beer and more at upscale places. Carlsberg and Tuborg are two beer brands you’ll typically find on tap, both of which are Danish Pilsner styles of beer. It’s legal to drink beer in public in Copenhagen, and a laidback way to enjoy one is by buying a bottle and drinking it in a park. To experience the local bar scene, head to Nyhavn. You’ll also find many bars and clubs in Sankt Hans Torv and Blågårds Plads.

Culture & History of the Copenhagen Cruise Port

In the 11th century, the first settlement was built on the shores of Copenhagen. Over the next few centuries it grew in prominence, particularly after Bishop Absalon came to Copenhagen and led the city as one of its foremost politicians and church father in the 12th century. He was also the closest advisor to King Valdemar I of Denmark. In the 13th century, a stone wall was built around the city, which helped protect Copenhagen from several attacks over the coming centuries. The city grew significantly under the rule of Christian IV of Denmark in the early 1600s and became the principal fortification and naval port of the country.

Today, the three things that most define culture in Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark is simplicity, politeness, and equality. Bragging is considered rude, and high incomes are not to be coveted. Instead, living a life of simple pleasures is desired. Hygge is the word given to the idea of finding moments of coziness and contentment, particularly through relaxing and eating together with friends.

The local economy is thriving and healthy with a strong tourism sector, which has helped to make it one of Europe’s fastest growing metropolitan destinations. Women and men are seen as equals in Denmark, and the maternity leave offered is one of the best in the world at 10 months.

The country is run by a constitutional monarchy with the Queen as the Head of the State. In return for the high taxes the citizens pay, the government of Denmark provides health care and many other social services.

Copenhagen Port Facilities & Location

Copenhagen’s port is called Copenhagen Malmö Port, and it has two main cruise piers. Depending on your ship, you may stop at Langelinie Pier, which is located about 1.5 miles from the city center, or in Ocean Quay, which is the harbor’s newest terminal located in Nordhavn that can accommodate larger cruise ships. Those on cruises to Copenhagen, Denmark that pull into port in Langelinie Pier will find a busy port center with several shops and cafes as well as an information center, money exchange offices, and ATMs. From Langelinie, you can easily walk to the city center. Those who have a Copenhagen cruise port of call at Ocean Quay won’t be able to walk to the city center, but there are tour bus companies and taxis lined up outside the pier. There is also a third cruise pier at Nordre Toldbod near the Little Mermaid Statue, though it's not as commonly used by cruise ships.

Transportation in Copenhagen

The easiest way to get around via public transportation in Copenhagen is by using the commuter rail or metro system. Both of these offer fast, regular service all around the city. There are a variety of ticket options depending on your needs, including single-use tickets and 24-hour tickets that cover multiple zones. Walking is also a great way to get around the city, since the main sights are located right within the city center or just a short distance outside it.

For a more customized service, hiring a taxi is an easy way to go since there are more than 1,700 government-licensed taxis that service the Copenhagen area, and many of the drivers speak English. Most taxis will accept credit cards, but double check before entering the cab. Expect an increase in fare prices during the evening hours or if visiting on a holiday.

If you love traveling via water, then you’ll have a fun time taking the waterbus around, which connects from Langelinie Pier to the city center. There is also a bus (#26) that connects to the city center and the pier multiple times every hour. From Ocean Quay, a hop-on, hop-off bus service is available to get into the city.

Shopping Near the Copenhagen Cruise Port

Strøget, one of the largest pedestrian malls in the world, offers both high street and luxury brand shopping and is a must-visit for fashionistas on a cruise to Copenhagen. For locally owned boutiques and clothing with a hip and eclectic flare, try the side streets off Strøget located in the Old City.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Denmark uses the krone currency. Prices here tend to be higher than in other European destinations. To stay on budget, book a shore excursion in advance and plan to eat your meals on the ship. Most banks in the city offer currency exchange, and you’ll find ATMs outside local banks. You can also swap your cash for kroners at one of the currency exchange offices located throughout the city, which are often found in post offices, train stations, and by Tivoli Gardens.

In general, tipping is not customary in Copenhagen, though it is common for a service charge to come included on bills for restaurants and taxis. Any tip amount on top of that is not expected, but it will be appreciated if you wish to tip more for stellar service.

Cruises From Copenhagen

Take a cruise from Copenhagen to find fairytale magic mixed with modern ingenuity. This European capital enchants with patinaed spires, Renaissance castles, and nods to children’s author Hans Christian Anderson, who called the city home for many years. But while Copenhagen has a lot of historic charm, it’s well-ahead when it comes to the environment. More than half of its well-dressed residents zip to work on bikes in sectioned-off bike paths. The city also started mandatory green roofs—sod-covered rooftops that reduce urban temperatures and stormwater system strain. One of the top things to do in Copenhagen is eat—chefs around the world draw inspiration from Noma, regarded as a top restaurant in the world. It is also the hardest to get into—attempt to make a reservation months ahead of your cruise to Denmark.

Silversea Cruises is known for epic globe-spanning itineraries. But the luxury line’s 2027 world cruise will take guests to more destinations than ever.

The voyage will feature highlights of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans over about five months. Passengers will visit 80 destinations – many of which the line has not previously included on a world cruise – in 35 countries.

“Calling in more destinations than any voyage in Silversea’s history, we proudly unveil The Three Oceans World Cruise 2027, which broadens our industry-leading offering of extended voyages,” the line’s president, Bert Hernandez, said in a news release . “Traveling aboard Silver Dawn, one of the smallest ships to embark on a World Cruise, our guests will venture off the beaten path to 80 destinations on five continents over 149 days, with the longest stays in port of any World Cruise.”

When is Silversea’s 2027 world cruise?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 8, 2027, from Los Angeles. Silver Dawn, which can accommodate 596 guests, will end the voyage on June 7 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Where will the cruise sail?

Passengers will first spend 46 days sailing from Los Angeles to Brisbane, Australia, stopping in ports like Hilo and Kahului in Hawaii, Moorea and Bora Bora in French Polynesia and more along the way.

“As well as having the opportunity to visit the UNESCO-listed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, guests will enjoy a bespoke World Cruise event on this beautiful archipelago, honoring ancient Polynesian seafarers at a sunset ho'olaule'a in Honolulu, with traditional fare, tropical libations, and a night of stargazing,” Silversea said in the release.

From Brisbane, the ship will head to Cape Town, South Africa. The ship will visit destinations like Singapore and the Maldives before guests spend a week on a “deep dive” into South Africa. On the final leg of the journey, passengers will explore other parts of Africa and the Mediterranean on their way to Northern Europe.

Other programming includes safari experiences, an overland trip to southern Africa’s Victoria Falls and a night of music at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The itinerary features 11 overnight stops in ports such as Cairns, Australia; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Bordeaux, France, as well.

Povl Dolleris Røjkjær Ungar, COO of CMP, said: “These machines run on fossil-free HVO100* biodiesel instead of fossil diesel and utilize modern hybrid electric technology, consuming significantly less fuel than previous equipment.

“With these new machines, efficiency and productivity will improve, meeting our customers’ demands.”

The new vehicles were ordered in early 2023 and began assembly at the site at the end of the year but have been subject to on-site testing before being handed over to the port operator.

While they have been installed at the existing terminal in Copenhagen, the straddle carriers will eventually be moved to a new terminal being developed for CMP by By & Havn in Ydre Nordhavn, which will replace the existing site in 2025.

In addition to the new carriers, Konecranes is also set to deliver two electric Ship-to-Shore cranes to CMP for the new terminal at the beginning of next year.

CMP has been investing significantly in hybrid and electric technology in recent years as it lowers its emissions, with the opening of the new port set to coincide with the operator reaching its climate neutral targets.

Thanks to its maritime history and strong industry presence, Copenhagen has become a centre of activity for sustainability efforts as Ship Technology found out during a visit to the city earlier this year.

Best cruise destinations for every type of traveler

Choosing where to cruise is one half of a successful vacation: The right ship plus a carefully selected destination that matches your overall interests typically equals an enjoyable cruise experience.

So, what are the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler?

That depends. With several dozen destination options around the globe to choose from — everything from popular locales you can cruise to from U.S. ports to far-flung regions known to top many bucket lists — it can take a bit of research to find your perfect match.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

That’s why we’re here. We’ve been around the block (and around the world) when it comes to cruises. We’ve explored the most captivating cities, waded into the surf on world-class beaches, hiked unspoiled landscapes and gazed upon treasured landmarks. So before you book your next cruise, have a look at our picks for the best cruise destinations for every type of traveler.

Best cruise destination for beach lovers: The Caribbean

When it comes to optimal sun, sand and surf, it’s tough to beat the Caribbean. It also helps that every major cruise line offers multiple itineraries in the region, most from November to March but quite a few year-round. You can cruise to the Caribbean from more than 10 U.S. cities — everywhere from New York to Galveston, Texas — although the majority of Caribbean cruises sail from Florida ports: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral and Tampa.

Which Caribbean islands have the best beaches? It’s impossible to choose since every island is fringed by talcum-soft sand and warm turquoise water and is home to lively beach bars offering music and tropical cocktails that will make your day in the sun all the more fun.

Cruises here are offered in three regions. Eastern Caribbean cruises visit ports including St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands. The Western Caribbean itineraries feature calls on Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. The Southern Caribbean voyages sail to islands such as St. Lucia, Barbados, Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Many cruise lines also call on Nassau in the Bahamas and their own Bahamian private islands , where beach days are sublime. Some longer itineraries (10 nights or more) also combine Eastern and Southern ports of call with less-visited islands such as St. Kitts and Antigua.

Best cruise destination for history buffs: The Eastern Mediterranean

The Eastern Mediterranean, where it meets the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas, is home to century-spanning sites sure to tempt any history buff. Cruises in this region typically call on Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy, while some also visit Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. More than any other region, the Eastern Mediterranean offers cruisers the chance to step back in time simply by stepping off their ship.

For example, cruises often begin in Istanbul, home to the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the elaborate Blue Mosque, constructed between 1609 and 1616. Ports of call also in Turkey may include Kusadasi for the nearby Roman city of Ephesus and its wondrous Library of Celsus. In Greece, medieval and Venetian architecture are thoughtfully preserved in the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, respectively. Your cruise might end in Athens, site of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon and its antiquities.

Or you can cruise from Venice, with its splendid 11th-century Basilica of San Marco and palazzo-lined canals, across the Adriatic to the coast of Croatia. These sailings typically call on Split (home to Diocletian’s Palace, which dates to the 4 th century) and Dubrovnik (with its postcard-perfect 13th-century walled Old Town), as well as the island nation of Malta (realm of the Knights of St. John).

If Israel and Jordan are must-visits, look for a cruise with Holy Lands in its title. These sailings often depart from Athens and also call on several Greek islands and Cyprus.

Best cruise destination for outdoor adventurers: Alaska

The 49 th State is a vast 665,400-square-mile wilderness. It offers an incredible 46,600 miles of coastline (longer than the shorelines of all the lower 48 states combined) and a unique and plentiful mix of wildlife. An Alaska cruise offers true outdoor adventure.

In port, choose from hiking amid boreal forests to sea kayaking among seals and sea otters. You can fish for salmon (and have it shipped home), zipline above a landscape inhabited by black bears and gaze down at massive glaciers from a seaplane or helicopter (and even land atop one).

Have a less-adventurous travel companion? They can pan for gold, ride a vintage train and dog-sled (and afterward cuddle adorable husky pups).

The Pacific Northwest port cities of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia are the gateways for the majority of Alaska cruises. Inside Passage itineraries are the most popular and cruise lines offer these sailings from May through September .

On a round-trip cruise, you’ll call on Juneau, Alaska’s remote capital that’s reachable solely by sea or air and offers access to Mendenhall Glacier. Other top ports are Ketchikan, known for wet-suit snorkeling and floatplane flightseeing; Skagway, where you can combine an invigorating hike and a relaxing river float trip; and Icy Strait Point, a top spot for sea kayaking and whale watching.

A highlight for many passengers is scenic cruising in Glacier Bay National Park . This 3.3-million-acre national park is home to more than 1,000 glaciers, including the accessible and photogenic Margerie Glacier, which extends 21 miles from the mountains to the bay. Have your camera ready to capture the action as huge chunks of Windex-blue ice calve off of its 250-foot-high face with a thunderous crack and crash into the frigid waters below.

Best cruise destination for honeymooners: French Polynesia

Lagoons that shimmer in a mosaic of the purest blues imaginable, palm-fringed islets comprised solely of pristine white sand, and Polynesian culture steeped in heart-pounding song and dance make a cruise through the islands of French Polynesia ideal for honeymooners. Tahiti and the other Society Islands — Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Huahine and Taha’a — offer a setting for celebratory romance that’s scenic and sensual.

Most cruises through the Societies are seven or 10 nights, with mornings spent exploring an island’s lush landscape by 4×4, visiting vanilla or black pearl farms or venturing into the lagoon for snorkeling excursions or shark and stingray feedings. In the afternoon, laze by your ship’s pool or give stand-up paddleboarding a try. Diving here is also superb, so couples who are certified can experience the thrill of underwater life beyond the lagoon.

On a cultural level, couples cruising through the islands of Tahiti can try new foods such as breadfruit and poisson cru (raw fish marinated in coconut and lime juice), melt into a state of blissful relaxation with traditional taurumi massage, and experience the soul-stirring drumbeats of Polynesian dance. Be sure to pluck a plumeria blossom and place it behind your left ear — to signify that your heart is spoken for.

Best cruise destination for city explorers: The Baltic

The sophisticated capitals of Scandinavia — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki — plus other coastal cities such as Tallinn, Estonia and Gdansk, Poland, are each compelling in their own right. So, imagine the rush of urban euphoria you’ll feel while exploring all of them on a Baltic (or Northern Europe) cruise from May through September.

While itineraries range from seven to 14 nights and the ports visited vary by cruise line, most sailings call on Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn. The Danish capital is a fascinating blend of imperial palaces, photogenic landmarks (including the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn and the Victorian-era Tivoli Gardens) and modern culinary and design innovations.

Equally captivating is Stockholm, where a stroll through Old Town (Gamla Stan) will take you back to medieval times. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Vasa Museum offers a fascinating glimpse at a doomed 17th-century wooden warship, and a few hours in the ABBA Museum will have you humming the band’s hits for hours afterward.

Then there’s Helsinki. Expect to be charmed by this quirky city with its unpronounceable street names, elegant Esplanade and cache of unique churches (among them the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral and the Temppeliaukion Church, aka the Church of the Rock). And Tallinn? The city’s remarkably intact medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site encircled by red-capped storybook-style towers. Easily explored on foot, it’s home to architectural landmarks that include Gothic-spired churches, Hanseatic merchant houses and a Pseudo-Russian cathedral.

Best cruise destination for the culturally curious: Japan

A single-country cruise itinerary gives you a chance to enjoy a deeper dive into local culture. One of the most popular destinations for this type of immersive experience is Japan. As an island nation, it has a wealth of ports that can be explored on 12- to 14-night circle-island sailings offered by both large-ship and small-luxury cruise lines.

From the bright lights and youthful energy of modern Tokyo, an itinerary will visit 10 or so Japanese cities. Your ship will also call on Busan, South Korea as required by maritime regulations.

Kobe is your access point for Kyoto, with its temples and gardens, while Shimizu is your gateway to scenic Mt. Fuji. Visit the moving Peace Memorial Park honoring the tragedy of WWII in Hiroshima and historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori. In Kanazawa, explore the well-preserved samurai and geisha districts. Don’t miss Sakaiminato, famous for its seafood and the Izumo-taisha Grand Shrine.

Along with enjoying Japan’s top sights on guided excursions, you’ll also have a chance to experience the country’s traditional music and dance, visit museums filled with centuries of art and soak in thermal hot springs. Be sure to sample culinary specialties, from udon noodles and sake to elaborate kaiseki multi-course feasts. Even better — you can do it all while only having to unpack once.

Best cruise destination for nature lovers: Panama Canal & Central America

Yes, the Panama Canal is manmade, but it cuts across 82 miles of Central American jungle on the isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A transit of the circa-1914 original or the 2016 extension takes a single day. The remainder of the cruise will be spent calling on ports in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia (historic coastal Cartagena), Mexico and the Caribbean.

That means there’s plenty of nature to appreciate. Some ships will spend a day in Colon, Panama, which offers access to Chagres National Park and the Gamboa Rainforest Preserve. Both are home to indigenous species such as toucans, coatimundis and monkeys.

During a visit to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, the volcanic landscape and surrounding rainforest and cloud forest offer opportunities for hiking, kayaking and spotting native species such as howler monkeys, sloths and crocodiles. Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala is known for its coffee plantations and access to the historic city of Antigua. The region also offers the chance to hike the Pacaya Volcano or visit the ancient Mayan site of Iximche.

In the Caribbean, some Panama Canal itineraries call on one of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire or Curacao) while others visit Grand Cayman, where stellar snorkeling and diving (and interaction with the playful residents of Stingray City) are top activities. On Mexico’s Pacific Coast, ports might include Huatulco, offering access to an iguana sanctuary and ecological park, or Puerto Vallarta, where you can enjoy a snorkel trip to Los Arcos de Mismaloya.

Best cruise destination for food and wine aficionados: Western Mediterranean

Italy, France and Spain are all celebrated for their distinctive cuisines and award-winning wines, which makes a Western Mediterranean itinerary perfect for culinary enthusiasts.

The fact that the region’s top cruise ports are the birthplaces of foodie favorites such as paella, pizza, spaghetti alla carbonara and moules-frites makes a cruise here a delicious indulgence. You can eat your fill of local cuisine in places such as Barcelona and Valencia in Spain, Marseille and Saint-Tropez in France, and Livorno (for Florence and Pisa), Rome and Naples in Italy.

Add in the Western Med’s top island ports, and it’s impossible to cruise here without enjoying some of the world’s most memorable foods and flavors. Olives and olive oil are an art form on the Spanish island of Mallorca, while wild boar is a rustic favorite on the French island of Corsica. The Italian island of Sardinia is known for its strong Cannonau red wine, and Sicily is the birthplace of the famous cannoli.

Some cruise lines are especially attuned to offering their guests local culinary experiences. These take the form of shore excursions (cooking classes, market visits and farm and winery tours) and onboard dinner menus that highlight regional specialties and local wines. FYI: Cruise ships also have fully equipped fitness centers where you can work off all the extra calories you’ll consume.

Best cruise destination for bucket-listers: Antarctica

When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica. The seventh continent, a place that belongs to no single nation but hosts research stations from almost 30, has fascinated adventurers for decades. But the swift expansion of luxury expedition cruising over the past five to seven years has made this frozen polar frontier the “It” destination of the 2020s.

What’s the experience like? On an expedition cruise, generally roundtrip from Ushuaia, Argentina, you’ll first have to cross the Drake Passage, a notoriously rough and windy body of water. Safely on the other side, you’ll arrive at landing points in the South Shetland Islands along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Whether viewing regiments of gleaming icebergs from your ship’s deck or photographing parades of waddling penguins against a surreal landscape of ice while ashore, the experience is like no other. Some expedition itineraries also venture farther south to the continent while longer sailings call on South Georgia Island and/or the Falklands.

Antarctica requires two things of visitors. The first is a healthy budget. Expedition cruises generally start at around $12,000 per person, although some major cruise lines offer scenic cruising in Antarctica — with no landings — for under $3,000 per person. The second is a moderate fitness level to be able to venture ashore in Zodiacs and explore the rugged landscape.

The cruise season spans just five months, from mid-November to March, and you’ll want to book far in advance so you have time to prepare.

Best cruise destination for travelers without a passport: Hawaii

If you’re passport-less or have let yours expire, you can still enjoy a tropical island cruise that’s exotic and yet reassuringly familiar. We’re talking Hawaii, where a seven-night inter-island itinerary visiting four islands doesn’t require that you have a passport. These itineraries are offered year-round aboard Norwegian Cruise Line ’s Pride of America.

Since you’ll be cruising in U.S. territory, you don’t have to worry should you need to leave the cruise early and fly back to the states because of illness or a family emergency. This can be a concern for passengers on round-trip, closed-loop sailings from Florida to the Caribbean or Bahamas who board only with a driver’s license and birth certificate.

Beyond the practical, a Hawaii cruise that begins and ends in Oahu and spends two days on each of the other main islands — Maui, Kauai and the Island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island) — offers plenty of time to enjoy the sights and even experience a cultural evening activity, such as a sunset luau. You’ll also avoid all the inter-island flights required for hotel stays.

Highlights of a Hawaii itinerary include a pre- or post-cruise visit to the historic sites of Pearl Harbor and perhaps even an overnight stay in Waikiki. On Maui, you can enjoy active thrills, such as biking down a switchback road on the volcanic slopes of Haleakala or snorkeling the offshore Molokini Crater.

Kauai is the place to admire the 50 th State’s lushest rainforests and to cruise past the scenic cliffs of the Napali Coast. And with two ports of call on the Island of Hawaii, you’ll enjoy the waterfalls of Hilo (along with access to Volcanoes National Park) and the sunny Kona coast, where snorkel trips and coffee farm visits are popular.
