We have just moved to Atlanta from Canada so we are going to start some new holiday traditions! Usually we get hot chocolate from Tim Hortons and go through the Christmas light display at the local zoo. It’s quite different here in GA without the snow!! We were going to take our 3 boys to the Coca Cola museum and visit Stone Mountain. We have a few other Christmas festivals to check out and hopefully some new traditions are created!

I loved going to the old world of Coke as a kid. The fountains shot up in the air into your cup.

One family tradition we have is going to the movies as a family on Christmas night! I wish to continue it with my children

' src=

December 7, 2021 at 7:33 pm

Our favorite tradition is going to the tree farm the Saturday after Thanksgiving to pick out and cut down our Christmas tree.

' src=

December 7, 2021 at 6:05 pm

Our favorite tradition is decorating the tree. We have ornaments to commemorate important events, trips we’ve taken as a family, etc. As we pull out the ornaments, we re-visit those memories together.

Our favorite holiday tradition is to have a holiday white elephant gift exchange ($10 and under) on Christmas Eve with our extended family on both sides. Combine 30-40 crazy relatives, zany unique gifts, and plenty of ‘spirits’ with Christmas snacks and you get an annual ridiculously hilarious Christmas memory!

I enjoy Christmas in front of the fireplace, watching Christmas movies while drinking hot chocolate.

Every year my family and I make a vow to spend more time together. That was hard with the pandemic and my sister and I are adults now out of the house; she’s a traveling nurse and I’m a teacher. One of the traditions that is a non-negotiable is decorating the tree together as a family. It’ maybe a small tradition, but we take great pride in decorating the Christmas tree and the home we grew up in. We play Christmas music, dance, laugh, and reminisce about past Christmases when we get together. It’s an amazing time and even with busy schedules and a pandemic that has no end in sight, now more than ever we make it a priority to do this with each other every year.

Each of our 8 differnt families have a theme. We wrap their gifts in their theme. We make cut-out cookies for their theme. Each family is given a dated ornament of their theme by monarch and they give an ornament of their theme to the monarch and 7 families.

And when they and their children arrive for Christmas Eve, they are wearing PJ’s of their theme.

It is so fun to look at the tree and the ornaments from Christmas past to remember the years. There is a special tree decorated with family members who have passed. Each ornament has a dated picture and is created by that individual family.

Every year my family would celebrate with a brunch with neighbors and special people in our lives!

' src=

December 6, 2021 at 12:30 pm

Every Christmas Eve we would spend with my Grandmother and Grandfather when they were living. The whole family together. We may not see each other the rest of the year, or be bickering about something, but on that day, we all got together and got along. I miss that.

My favorite memory is my family going to church on Christmas Eve. Halfway through the service the choir began to sing Joy To The World. When it came time for the chorus the man behind us sang “and heaven and nature sing” VERY loudly in a booming baritone voice. Needless to say it initially scared us and then we broke out in little girl giggles. Great memory of the joy of my youth 🥰

My absolutely favorite holiday tradition was “Adopting a family!” Every year my mom would adopt family (or multiple) and my siblings and I would help her pick out their gifts! One year we got to meet the family, I was a teenager but seeing their faces and how grateful they were for the gifts made my heart soar! We would also spend a lot of our time at shelters during the holidays loving on people. I’m so thankful my mom made that a regular thing for us, it helped to keep us grounded and in a place of being thankful for all we have. I can’t wait to continue this tradition with my boys!! Happy Holidays!!

My absolute favorite tradition that my boyfriend’s family started and has invited me to be a part of is gathering together at a cabin in North GA. Last year, we watched Christmas movies, made hot chocolate bombs, did jigsaw puzzles together, and cozied up by the fire while the snow fell. We’re going again this year and I’m excited to decorate sugar cookies and wear silly Christmas sweaters with them!

' src=

December 6, 2021 at 8:37 am

Our favorite holiday traditions are driving around looking at the lights, making yummy decorated cookies with friends and reading the night before christmas on Christmas eve. We’re new to Georgia and are working on making new memories down here!

December 6, 2021 at 6:47 am

Our family loves to ride around of the weekend evenings during the month of December and look at all the holiday lights. We’ve done this every since the kids were babies and although they are teenagers and college aged students now they still enjoy this family tradition. We have a few light displays that are local to us that the neighbors put on every year but I try to find a new display that we haven’t seen before that we drive to view. I hope the kids continue this as they start their own families!

' src=

December 6, 2021 at 6:24 am

We love to play Scrabble in the evenings during winter, especially as it gets dark so early that we can’t do our daily evening walk.

Six years ago my Mom moved here from NC to an assisted living facility. She was moving from her home, her friends, her whole life. My circle of friends immediately pitched in to help, inviting her to Christmas parties and tickets to shows. But the best part were my i-laws, who threw open their doors for a elderly old lady they’d not ever met. She loved the attention, and the laughter of children and the craziness of gifts and food. It was something I could never give her where she lived, and it was gratifying to see her eyes light up.

Our kids are young so we are still fine tuning our forever traditions. But so far we pick out 1 ornament a piece every year together and wear Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve with hot chocolate and Christmas movies while we make cookies for Santa.

' src=

December 5, 2021 at 6:32 pm

Growing up, when we had friends and family visit us from out of state (at any time of year but especially at the holidays), we always took them to the World of Coke. It’s a hit with kids and adults, and the tasting room is always so much fun. The new holiday attractions there sound really interesting!

' src=

December 5, 2021 at 6:19 pm

We just moved here so we’re trying to making holiday memories in Atlanta. But my finest memory is when it snowed in Wilmington, NC and my son and his friends snowball fight and I made a fire and we had hot chocolate and s’mores.

With millions of visitors flocking to Atlanta every year, one of the main attractions that keep them coming back in droves is the wonderful World of Coca-Cola. Atlanta is home to Coca-Cola, the world’s largest and most successful soft drink manufacturer. Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, the World of Coca-Cola is a truly fascinating look at how Coca-Cola came to be an international sensation.

Originally, the World of Coke was a permanent fixture at the Underground, a bustling entertainment center in Downtown Atlanta. In the early 2000’s, the museum closed down and plans to reopen the World of Coke in its new, much larger location began to take shape.

The new World of Coke museum made its grand debut on May 24th 2007 and quickly became a much sought after destination for locals and visitors trekking to the Downtown Atlanta corridor. Located directly across the street from the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium and the Olympic Centennial Park, this sprawling 60,000 square foot, state of the art museum is a beacon for Coca Cola connoisseurs and museum buffs alike.

What’s really exciting about the World of Coke is that the tour touches on the past, present and the future of the brand that has come to symbolize American tradition and creativity. From special exhibits that feature pop art utilizing the Coca Cola logo or silhouette to the tasting room which allows patrons to sample more than sixty different Coca Cola recipes from around the world, this family friendly museum is a must-see on any list of Downtown Atlanta attractions.

As its name suggests, World of Coca-Cola is a museum dedicated entirely to the famous soda. Visits to the two-level facility begin with exhibits on the drink's history, its role in pop culture and the bottling process. A Portrait Wall documents the brand’s global impact. In addition to the regular Coca-Cola Theater, the museum boasts a 3-D Theater. The older generations in your group will likely enjoy the museum's attention to the company's past, but the kids will probably be most excited for the Taste It! area, where multiple varieties of Coke can be sampled. You can also purchase various Coke memorabilia at the on-site gift shop.

Soda enthusiasts find this place fascinating (though those with no affinity for the brand may be underwhelmed). Some visitors lament that the museum can get crowded and its lines long.

World of Coca-Cola Tickets

Standard tickets for World of Coca-Cola cost $21 for adults, $19 for seniors and $17 for kids ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and younger get in for free. Should you opt to stop by World of Coca-Cola, plan your itinerary so that your trip coincides with or is around the same time as a visit to the nearby Georgia Aquarium and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights . All three attractions are accessible by streetcar, bus, train and car. If you decide to drive, World of Coca-Cola has a parking garage that charges $20 per vehicle.

The World of Coca-Cola provides plenty of kid-friendly entertainment options.

Plan to spend roughly two to three hours enjoying the exhibits.

The museum is next to the Georgia Aquarium and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, making for an easy full day of activities.

Purchase tickets in advance to guarantee admission.

The World of Coca-Cola is conveniently located in downtown Atlanta. For drivers, the parking garage is off of Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. Those staying in Midtown may prefer to walk to the attraction. Or, take a MARTA train to Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center or Peachtree Center and walk 10 to 15 minutes.

The World of Coca-Cola provides a cool oasis during Atlanta’s long, hot summers; visit during peak heat in summer afternoons for a much-needed air-conditioned reprieve. The museum is open daily with the exception of major holidays. Check operating hours before your trip.

General admission allows access to all the major attractions, but to learn more about the history of Coca-Cola, opt for a guided World of Coca-Cola tour, which is capped at 10 people for a personalized experience. The tour includes access to unique photo opportunities.

It takes an average of two hours to go through the World of Coca-Cola’s permanent exhibitions. Make sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy the interactive attractions, snap a selfie with the Coca-Cola polar bear, and sample the different flavors in the tasting room.

Yes. With more than one million annual visitors, the World of Coca-Cola is one of Atlanta’s most popular attractions and is definitely worth a visit. Packed with interactive and multimedia exhibitions, you can learn about the Coca-Cola secret formula, enjoy a 3D video experience, and sample more than 100 Coca-Cola flavors in the tasting room.

No, you can’t take outside food and drinks into the World of Coca-Cola except under special circumstances. You can buy lunch and snacks at the nearby Bottle Cap Café, and a lunch cart is also available for school groups to store their boxed lunches during the tour.

You don’t have to book World of Coca-Cola tickets in advance, but reserving ahead of time is highly recommended. Plus, it’ll save you US$1. Tickets bought on the day are subject to availability and might sell out at busy times. Advance booking is also essential for guided tours and other experiences.

At the World of Coca-Cola, you’ll experience the Vault of the Secret Formula and the bottling plant, where you can sample 100 different Coca-Cola varieties from around the world and pose for photos with the Coca-Cola polar bear. There’s also a 3D movie experience and more than 200 Coca-Cola artifacts on display.

Yes, you’ll pass through a security checkpoint before entering the World of Coca-Cola—this can sometimes add some time onto your visit. Prohibited items include guns, knives, and all other forms of weapons. You are also asked to wear clothing and accessories suitable for a family-friendly attraction.

And, in the Ford African Rain Forest, you’ll find the country’s largest population of gorillas. Interact with the tallest animals in the zoo as you feed the giraffes. When your wildlife viewing is done, the kids can cool off at the splash fountain or hop on the zoo train for a ride.

10. Opt Outside for More Family Fun

Spend some time outside exploring the Atlanta BeltLine . This multi-use trail follows a historic railroad corridor through Atlanta neighborhoods. An ideal place to work off some of the kids’ excess energy, the trails invite walking, running, skating and biking. It’s one of the best free, kid-friendly things to do in Atlanta.

Just 15 miles from Atlanta, Sweetwater Creek State Park offers a variety of activities for kids of all ages including boating, camping, fishing, geocaching and hiking.

Escape within the city’s Midtown neighborhood at Piedmont Park. This urban green space hosts several miles of paved paths ideal for biking, rollerblading, running and walking. In Georgia’s northwest corner on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon State Park serves up gorgeous views at every turn. Home to cascading creeks, dense woodland, sandstone cliffs, thousand-foot-deep canyons, waterfalls, wild caves and wildlife, there’s something to entertain everyone in the family, from toddlers to teens.

The park boasts 64 miles of hiking trails, 10 miles of horseback riding trails and 30 miles of biking trails. For generations, my family has made the trek down into the canyon to view Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. The hike is short but steep, with 600 steps leading down into the canyon and, of course, 600 steps back up. But your efforts are amply rewarded.

For those interested in camping overnight, the park offers cabins, yurts, tent campsites and RV sites.

In the Battle for Georgia, Democrats Lose a Key Fighter

Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, a leader of the A.M.E. Church, turned Georgia into a political machine for Democrats by mobilizing voters of faith. Now, he is leaving the state just months before the November election.

By Maya King and Nick Corasaniti

Maya King has covered Georgia politics and Black faith leaders since 2022. Nick Corasaniti has followed Bishop Jackson since his days in New Jersey. They reported from Atlanta.

  • Aug. 28, 2024

When Democrats flipped Georgia in 2020, Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, the leader of the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Sixth Episcopal District, had been in the state just four years.

That was all the time he needed to turn a disjointed operation into a political machine. His success in mobilizing Black voters of faith played a key role in sending Joseph R. Biden Jr. to the White House — and two Democrats, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, to the Senate.

Now, Bishop Jackson, who is based in Atlanta, is leaving the state he helped make competitive. He will preside over the Second Episcopal District, which includes churches in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

His departure, in keeping with rules that dictate a bishop may remain in a district for only two consecutive four-year terms, creates a critical leadership void in the organizing infrastructure that Democrats are relying on to turn out the vote for Vice President Kamala Harris just months before the election. Moreover, it could pose new challenges for the state’s network of activists and operatives already facing significant hurdles to replicating their past successes.

“Bishop Jackson enabled us,” said Rev. Timothy McDonald, the senior pastor of First Iconium Baptist Church in Atlanta. He credited Bishop Jackson for taking their work “beyond an idea — which preachers have a lot of — to an actual plan of how we’re going to turn out the vote.”

The bishop, 70, is leaving as Georgia re-emerges as one of the most prominent swing states in the presidential election. Ms. Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, are kicking off a bus tour through southeast Georgia on Wednesday that will culminate in Savannah, sending a clear message that Democrats believe the state is back in play after former President Donald J. Trump built up a double-digit polling lead against President Biden.

Over the past year, Mr. Trump’s strength, coupled with the lack of a statewide race and general political exhaustion, had led to apathy and atrophy among the state’s once-vibrant liberal network of Democratic-leaning organizations, civil rights groups and faith-based organizations. Black faith leaders had warned for months that the voters in their pews also lacked enthusiasm and were growing disenchanted with Mr. Biden over his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas and the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Ms. Harris’s replacing Mr. Biden atop the Democratic ticket has stemmed some of the free fall. But organizers across the state, including Bishop Jackson, say there is still a lot of work to do to keep Georgia competitive.

“We have got to do a job of making sure that our community, our people are informed and educated on issues and that they are motivated and they are organized,” Bishop Jackson said in an interview. “That’s the challenge that we have.”

A political fixture

Bishop Jackson, wearing a salmon-colored long-sleeved collared shirt, a tie and suspenders, sits at a desk with papers and holds a pen. He is also dialing on a large office phone.

After attending seminary in Atlanta, whose rich civil rights history he had been drawn to, Bishop Jackson served as the senior pastor of St. Matthew A.M.E. in Orange, N.J., for more than 30 years. As the leader of New Jersey’s Black Ministers Council, a governing body of Black faith leaders, he became a fixture of local politics. Charismatic and endlessly willing to take a meeting or give a speech, he forged relationships with powerful figures in both parties, becoming something of a political boss himself whose blessing was essential to successful campaigns or legislative efforts.

“You could not do things in politics without coming and engaging with him,” Senator Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey, said in an interview, recalling how he had met with the bishop before running for City Council, mayor and Senate. “It would be a malpractice in New Jersey to be politically active without seeking his counsel and his wisdom, and understanding that he was a force in his own right.”

After Bishop Jackson was elected bishop, he arrived in Atlanta months before the 2016 presidential election frustrated to find a track record of low Black turnout and disjointed efforts from fellow faith leaders to address it. He founded Operation Voter Turnout, encouraging members of Georgia’s more than 500 A.M.E. churches to vote.

By the time the 2020 election approached, the bishop had emerged as an instrumental figure in the movement to increase Black voter engagement. He pulled in leaders from other religions and Christian denominations, encouraging them to push their congregants to check their voter registration, develop a voting plan and ensure that members of their communities did the same. He also departed from some of the church’s more antiquated traditions by including women and younger clergy members in his circle of advisers. Allies remarked on his ability to pull the various factions into a common cause.

Stacey Abrams, the voting rights activist and former Democratic candidate for Georgia governor, said Bishop Jackson’s influence in the state was so great that a single call to him could generate support from dozens of allies in the faith community and beyond.

“It is a more efficient process to go directly to Bishop Jackson and that will be missed,” she said. “There’s an efficiency to having one person who can do all of the things.”

It remains uncertain whether the infrastructure he built can carry on in full without him. Several of the state’s organizing groups have warned of fewer resources and diminished donor interest this year compared with other election cycles. In meetings with his advisers, they have underlined the need to focus on Georgia’s rural stretches, where some church leaders have had a harder time organizing their members to vote.

Bishop Jackson offered a word of warning for Democrats on his way out: They are often, he said, “on the right side of an issue, but they are not as committed to the fight as Republicans of the far right are.”

Battle against voting legislation

Voting was not Bishop Jackson’s only cause. In 2020, he worked with the state legislative Black caucus to pass a hate crimes law. That same year, he pushed to make sure that rural Black Americans were counted in the census .

During the trial in 2021 of the men who killed Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was shot while jogging in Brunswick, Ga., Bishop Jackson helped bring a group of more than 500 Black clergy members to the city to hold a vigil.

“The people, the population, saw the Black church,” said Mr. McDonald, who worked closely with Bishop Jackson throughout his time in Georgia. “They appreciated the Black church getting outside of the stained-glass windows and cushioned pews and getting in the streets.”

But Bishop Jackson’s organizing influence was particularly pronounced in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election and the 2021 U.S. Senate runoffs in Georgia.

Shortly after those Democratic victories, Georgia Republicans in the State Legislature rewrote the state’s election code and sought to reduce Sunday voting — which many saw as a retaliatory effort to restrict voting after church services, a Black voter rite of passage colloquially known as souls to the polls.

The response from the Black church this time, Bishop Jackson realized, would require a shift. He would still activate his network, weary from the slog of a general election and runoff, to marshal another campaign. But he began leaning on business leaders, demanding audiences with the heads of major Georgia-based companies like Coca-Cola, who would declare their opposition to the law . When Home Depot stayed silent, Bishop Jackson orchestrated a boycott of the company .

The public pressure campaign against the new law would reach as far as Major League Baseball, and Republicans in the Legislature ultimately struck the language that would have sharply curtailed Sunday voting from the legislation that Gov. Brian Kemp, a Republican, signed into law.

The experience both rattled and energized Bishop Jackson ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, when Mr. Warnock was once more on the ballot, this time vying for a full six-year term.

To respond, Bishop Jackson co-founded Faith Works, a political nonprofit that brought formal organization to the Black church’s political operation in Georgia, with the express goal of increasing voter turnout.

And in early 2024, Bishop Jackson expanded his church’s efforts to partner with the Christian Methodist Episcopal and African Methodist Episcopal Zion churches. Since its forming, the coalition has sought to mobilize more than 140,000 voters across the state.

Leaders in the network said that though their organizing figure was departing, they planned to carry on his work and advance it.

“Losing him will be painful because we are losing a friend and a brother and partner,” said the Rev. Cynthia Hale, the founder and senior pastor of Ray of Hope Christian Church in Decatur, Ga. “We’re going to stay connected with him and continue this in a nationwide effort.”
