Freeride World Tour 2023 Athlete Roster

  Mountainwatch | Press Release

Pully, Swizterland: The 2023 Freeride World Tour consists of five events and 43 riders, but these are merely numbers. This world-class spectacle would not be possible without the total commitment of the world’s best freeriders, ready to drop no matter the physical pain or mental pressure. Ready to drop regardless of the conditions Mother Nature dishes up on the day. Ready to drop to satisfy the seemingly unquenchable thirst of their audience, who feed off the next big trick or near-impossible line. For the past 16 years, each roster has brought the FWT to life, and this year’s list promises to do the same…

World Champion Jess Hotter – who was also recently nominated as the best female athlete in New Zealand – is back to defend her title, with eight others hot on her heels to take the crown. Whispers of the three-time FWT runner-up Hedvig Wessel returning to the action are also circulating. She is focusing on new projects, but could be back for an event wildcard.

The battles are always intense in the ski men category, and World Champion Maxime Chabloz will have to fight off a talent-packed field – including the likes of Carl Regner and Max Palm – to be crowned again. Newcomer Max Hitzig, who won last year’s FWT Fieberbrunn event, is hungry for more podium finishes, as is the unyielding Mayor of Stomptown, Reine Barkered, returning as an injury wildcard.

The Sultan of Steez, Blake Moller, will have his hands full trying to defend his title, with no shortage of new talent and seasoned legends in the mix. Watch out for Camille Armand– who is hungry to go one better than last year – as well as rookies Liam Riviera and Holden Samuels, and former FWT athlete Jonathan Penfield.

Snowboard Women

Can Tiphanie Perrotin hold off a strong contingent and double down after winning the FWT in her rookie year? She will have to hold off FWT22 Runner-Up Erika Vikander and the ever-impressive Manuela Mandl, who won Xtreme Verbier last year. Katie Anderson and Anna Orlova have also requalified, rounding out an extremely impressive female snowboard roster.

There it is folks, 43 of the world’s best freeriders ready for battle. How will their qualifications translate to success in the big mountains? Whatever happens, every athlete always gives it their all, overcoming the mixed bag of emotions to deliver death-defying runs in awe-inspiring terrain. And for that, we thank you. All FWT events will be live at www.freerideworldtour.com  to see your favorite riders in action. Until then, stay tuned to our social channels for any updates.

Freeride World Tour 2023

The world's best freeriders return to the big stage | it's the 16th year of the freeride world tour.

Freeride World Tour 2023 ad

The Freeride World Tour announces the calendar for 2023 with five stops in five countries. The world’s best athletes return for the 16th version of this iconic series, ready to push the limits of what’s possible in the high mountains in their quest for the sport’s ultimate prize.

This year’s schedule has five stops in five different countries, with two finals events and a two-run format in Fieberbrunn, where riders’ top score will count towards their result. To up the pressure (even more), and to reward those with nerves – and legs – of steel, 12,500 points for first place (instead of 10,000) will again be up for grabs in the FWT finals events.

Who can tame Verbier’s  Bec des Rosses  and Fieberbrunn’s  Wildseeloder  to maximise their chance of being crowned the champ? Time will tell.

Until then, check out the world-class venues for FWT23:

Kicking Horse Golden BC, Canada | January 13-18, 2023

Known for its champagne powder and long, steep runs, it’s no wonder Kicking Horse attracts riders from all over the globe. The world’s best will have to shake off any early-season nerves and be on point from the very first turn, as these mountains dish up some classic freeride terrain that is unforgiving for the unprepared.

Baqueira Beret, Spain | January 28 – February 2, 2023

After leaving the scenic Rocky Mountains, the Tour heads across the pond for the European leg. Baqueira Beret will again play host, following the success of last year’s inaugural event at this epic venue. Consistent snowfall and varied terrain make this world-class resort an ideal test for freeride fanatics.

Ordino Arcalís, Andorra | February 4-9, 2023

The third stop of FWT23 heads to Ordino Arcalís, where athletes will have one last chance to rack up the points before the cut. This venue has become a permanent fixture on tour, and for a good reason, with playful terrain offering opportunities for creative freeride lines.

Following the competition in Ordino Arcalís, the CUT will take place. Athletes can qualify using results from two out of the first three events.

Fieberbrunn, Austria | March 11-17, 2023

The first finals event heads to Fieberbrunn, where athletes must navigate the glorious – yet intimidating – Wildseeloder. This mountain is a true test for even the most seasoned pro, and athletes will surely put it all on the line to ensure they have the best shot at the crown.

Xtreme Verbier Switzerland | March 25 – April 2, 2023

The Grand Finale returns to the undisputed home of freeride, the Bec des Rosses at Verbier, Switzerland. Unrideable to most mere mortals, athletes not only tame this beast year after year, but turn it into their playground, consistently combining new line variations with death-defying stunts.

The Inertia

Now in its 16th year, the Freeride World Tour is gearing up for another season of shred. The tour pits the world’s best freeride ski and snowboard athletes against one another in some of the toughest terrain in the world. Last year, with the “unusual” snow season that we experienced, the tour saw gnarly conditions as well as gnarly terrain, leading to some insane wipeouts . Fingers crossed for a more powder-filled season this year.

Kicking Horse, Golden BC, Canada: January 13-18, 2023

Baqueira Beret, Spain: January 28 – February 2, 2023

After the first three events, part of the tour will be cut heading into the two-event finals. Athletes will qualify for the finals based off of results from two out of the first three events.

American Rookie Wins First Freeride World Tour Event of the Season

Addison rafford is part of a cadre of younger riders shaking up the tour this season..

Earlier this season, SKI guessed that rookies would continue pushing the envelope on the Freeride World Tour in 2023, citing an explosion of young talent emerging from the qualifier series. This prediction panned out during the first stop of the Freeride World Tour at Baqueira-Beret , with 21-year-old American rookie Addison Rafford securing first place in the women’s category after a spotless run.

Before the event started in the morning, competitors were thrown a curveball when an avalanche ripped down the center of the Baciver, the competition face. The already nervy atmosphere, replete with pre-comp jitters, turned darker, and many wondered if the event organizers should postpone the competition. “All the riders got pretty scared and wanted to cancel the comp,” said Max Palm , winner of this year’s and last season’s Baqueira-Beret competition in the men’s category.

Related: FWT Baqueira Beret stop confirmed despite sketchy conditions

However, Rafford, who’s come-up required skiing notoriously questionable conditions in the Freeride World tour qualifier competitions, was too excited to ski an enormous big mountain face to worry about the avalanche.

“I was just so stoked to finally be able to ski something with no traverse tracks in the landings,” she said. Plus, she knew that “it wasn’t gonna slide when I was skiing it because they [the event organizers] were ski cutting it, and they were definitely following all the right safety precautions. They aren’t gonna send us on a face that still had stuff that needed to slide.”

Rafford kept it simple during her run, lining up a few quick drops on the skier’s right side of the venue before charging into one final cliff, which she stomped. The judges scored her at 72.67, allowing her to eke out a narrow lead over Molly Armanino, another American rider.

Watch: Addison Rafford’s winning run at FWT Baqueira-Beret 2023

“It felt super good, like so great, but not what I was expecting at all,” said Rafford of her winning run.

While the American skier’s already carved out a niche as an athlete, nabbing sponsorships from big names like Smith, Sturtevants, and Black Crows, the Baqueira-Beret FWT stop was her first time on the world stage. Unlike many younger riders on the Tour, Rafford took to freeride later in life. She grew up skiing in Sun Valley, eventually joining the local mogul team. She competed in moguls until 11th grade when her coaches were let go. With her favorite coaches gone, and older friends graduating from the team, Rafford decided it was time for something new.

Briefly adrift, she eventually joined her mountain’s freeride team and started entering big mountain competitions. After graduating high school, she battled through one frustrating season of crashing on the Qualifier circuit before racking up enough points to earn a ticket to the big leagues.

As the 2023 Tour unfolds, Rafford hopes to push herself further, taking on challenging new lines and throwing tricks. “Now I’m confident with line selection,” she said, “I know next time I go out to compete, I can feel a little bit more confident in my line choice and then hopefully pick definitely some bigger features and add some more things into it.”

On the men’s side, Sweden’s Palm, who needs no introduction, proved that his win at Baqueira-Beret last year wasn’t a fluke. While his skiing was more reserved this past weekend (no double backflips this time), the judges appreciated his precision and fluidity, handing him the day’s highest score. Palm found it reassuring “to be able to win with a run that I don’t have to be at my limit.”

Watch: Max Palm’s winning run at FWT Baqueira-Beret 2023

The 20-year-old skier has reported in multiple interviews that he rarely gets nervous before competing. However, he did note that his run at Baqueira-Beret had one close call, which gave him a scare. Early in his run, he nearly crashed into a rock wall when he overcooked his first 360.

“That was the only part I was scared of,” said Palm. “I went a little bit bigger than I was expecting, so I almost jumped straight into the rock. But I managed to like land with my ski and bounce back. When you see it on the GoPro, it’s insane. Like I came so close.”

Both Palm and Rafford represent a generational shift taking place on the Tour. The old guard—the Aymar Navarros, Kristofer Turdells, and Reine Barkereds—are suddenly struggling to meet the explosive talents of the younger riders who spin and flip their way down the mountain. These freestyle-oriented athletes haven’t foregone the discipline of pure freeride, which emphasizes fluidity and technical line selection. Instead, they marry freestyle and freeride in an awe-inspiring reinvigoration of the sport.

See the full results of the 2023 FWT Baqueira Beret comp here

“It’s weird because I didn’t even think of myself as a part of it [the next generation of freeriders] until literally like the past 24 hours,” said Rafford. “The past like three or four years, there’s been so many new young guns coming up. And even if you like, look down the qualifying circuit and the junior circuit like the young kids … the level of skiing is insane.”

This shift is bittersweet. While we viewers were treated to an unprecedented spectacle this past weekend, we also had to say farewell to Navarro, who announced his departure from the Tour after years of throwing down gnarly big mountain lines. The hometown Baqueira-Beret crowd roared when Navarro skied into the finish corral, and after he removed his goggles, he brushed tears from his eyes.

“ Never in my wildest dreams this kid from a small town called Les (Val d’Aran) would have imagined me competing in my house in front of 5000+ people screaming my name,” wrote Navarro in an Instagram post after the competition. “Thank you thank you and thank you for all these years and for all the love you gave me yesterday at the Baciver.”

Congress elects new Council members, approves Freeride as a FIS discipline

The 55 th International Ski Congress convened this Wednesday in Reykjavik, Iceland, where a busy agenda included landmark decisions such as the integration of Freeride as a FIS discipline, the election of 18 Council members, and the inclusion of two new FIS associate members: Guinea-Bissau and Qatar.

With the Freeride World Tour and FIS having already joined forces since the 2023 season, the ground was set for the Congress to vote on the inclusion of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as a full-fledged FIS discipline.

Council renewed

The Congress in Reykjavik was capped by the biennial election of 18 Council members, of whom eight were re-elected members and 10 are new joiners.

The elected ones, in alphabetical order of the country they represent:

Michael Huber (AUT) – new member

Tzeko Minev (BUL) – re-elected

Deidra Dionne (CAN) – re-elected

Anna Harboe Falkenberg (DEN) – new member

Martti Uusitalo (FIN) – re-elected

Fabien Saguez (FRA) – new member

Franz Steinle (GER) – re-elected

Flavio Roda (ITA) – re-elected

Aki Murasato (JPN) - re-elected

Freddy Keirouz (LBN) – new member

Alexander Ospelt (LIE) – new member

Fiona Stevens (NZL) – re-elected

Tove Moe Dyrhaug (NOR) – new member

Enzo Smrekar (SLO) – re-elected

José María “May” Peus España (ESP) – new member

Karin Mattsson (SWE) – new member

Jean-Philippe Rochat (SUI) – new member

Dexter Paine (USA) – new member

Following a last-minute proposal submitted by the FIS Council, which gathered the day before, the Congress approved the inclusion of two representatives of Para Snow Sports, and not only one, as athletes’ representatives in the Council – the same number allocated to able-bodied athletes.

Adam Hall, from New Zealand, was confirmed as one of these two athletes, while the second representative, who will be a woman, is still to be appointed.

The Congress also validated a resolution by the FIS Council to have two athlete representatives – one of whom representing Para Snow Sports – on the Executive Committee.

The first meeting of the FIS Council with its new composition is scheduled for 4 July and will be held online.

New FIS Council

New members welcome to the family

On a day when it incorporated a new discipline and elected a new Council, the 74 nations present at the Congress also voted on the admission of two new FIS associated members: Guinea-Bissau and Qatar.

Next year’s Congress is planned to be held online on 13 June 2025, while the 2026 edition will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, and is scheduled to take place between 10 and 11 June.

Freeride Achieves Official Status: A Game-Changer for Athletes and the Sport

The International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) has recognized Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as an official discipline. This historic decision was made during the FIS General Assembly held in Reykjavik, where FIS and National Ski Associations members voted on June 5, 2024. Following the FWT acquisition by FIS in December 2022, the officialization of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding is the second step towards the development of the sport on a global scale, extending support to athletes and enhancing the potential for future inclusion in the Winter Olympic Games. The inclusion of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as a full-fledged FIS discipline was voted unanimously by all members of the Congress.

"This is an important day for the freeride community," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Founder and CEO of FWT. "The recognition of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as an official discipline within FIS will elevate the sport and provide new opportunities for athletes worldwide. We are excited about the future prospects this brings to the freeride movement and beyond."

FIS is the home of snow sports in all its forms, for everyone – it is only natural for us to fully embrace the excitement of a rising discipline like Freeride. We are thrilled to have them as part of the family. Johan Eliasch, FIS President

Following this recognition, Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding will undergo a voting process within individual National Ski Associations worldwide. This step emphasizes grassroots development, ensuring the sport gains widespread support and that young athletes have the resources needed to excel.

The Freeride World Championships will now be included within the FIS framework, paving the way for a structured and unified approach to competitions and athlete development.

This is just the beginning. Our goal is to nurture the sport at all levels, from grassroots to elite competitions, and to see Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding represented in future Winter Olympic Games. Nicolas Hale-Woods, FWT Founder

The recognition by FIS is expected to have a profound impact on the freeride community, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage and encouraging the next generation of freeriders to pursue their passion with greater support and resources.
