Norwegian cruise line offers year-round europe with canary island cruises.

Norwegian Cruise Line is launching 10 to 14-day diverse itineraries that combine the Canary Islands with visits to Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. Embarkation points will include Lisbon, Malaga and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Norwegian Cruise Line is returning to the Canary Islands for the first time since 2017, delivering guests more choice and flexibility with year-round Europe cruise offerings in 2022.

Following a grand 22-day transatlantic voyage from Miami to Lisbon, Norwegian Sun will make her return to Europe offering immersive Canary Island sailings from Nov. 21, 2022 . Cruises on board the nearly 2,000-passenger ship will range from 10 to 14 days and will provide guests with greater flexibility by offering a choice of embarkation ports, including Lisbon, Portugal; Malaga, Spain; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. Furthermore, during Norwegian Sun’s debut six-month season in the region, she will call to various new ports for NCL, including Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) and San Sebastian de la Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain; Cueta, Spain; Agadir, Morocco; and Horta (Azores), Portugal.

“The Canaries have always been a draw for travelers from all over the globe and more so now when seeking some much-needed winter sun”, said Harry Sommer , president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line. “Norwegian Sun’s new itineraries provide for a unique combination of the Canary Islands with ports in Portugal, mainland Spain as well as Morocco, offering our guests an all-year Europe season with nine ships to make the most of their travel this year.”

Providing access to some of the most sought-after ports in the region – ranging from Agadir and Casablanca in Morocco to Las Palmas and Arrecife in Spain – voyages also visit hidden gems such as Ceuta in North Africa and Cadiz in Spain. Port-intensive cruises include no more than two days at sea and an average of twelve hours in port time, with late night stays in Lisbon, Portugal; Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Las Palmas (Grand Canaria) and Casablanca, Morocco. Plus, select sailings include overnight calls in idyllic locations where nightlife abounds, including Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Funchal (Madeira), Portugal.

Including Norwegian Sun, nine NCL ships are sailing in European waters this summer and make up the greatest European fleet in the Cruise Line’s history. Calling at more European ports than any other contemporary cruise line, NCL will offer guests greater choices than ever before, including Norwegian Prima, the newest member of NCL’s fleet and the first in the ground-breaking Prima Class, set to debut later this year. NCL’s extensive range of European itineraries in 2022 include voyages to the Greek Isles, the Norwegian Fjords, the Mediterranean and the Canaries.

Its waterfront promenade, Avenida Marítima, offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and is lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. Santa Cruz also boasts architectural marvels like the Auditorio de Tenerife, a striking concert hall designed by Santiago Calatrava, and historic landmarks such as the Castillo de San Cristóbal, a fortress dating back to the 17th century.

10 surprising fun facts about the Canary Islands

Canary Island cruises are an easy way to pack multiple islands from the Spanish archipelago into one trip alongside a wealth of other Spanish gems. Here’s what you might not know about the Canaries.

Canary Island cruise vacations benefit from a destination blessed with year-round sun, fascinating flora and fauna and superb beaches.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is Europe’s Leading Cruise Line 15 years running (by World Travel Awards) and is sailing the islands off the coast of northwest Africa in 2024.

Certain NCL itineraries also pack in Portugal, Gibraltar, Madeira and mainland Spain as well as the Canary Islands – how’s that for value?

norwegianepic-lifestyle-couple

You’ll also get Wi-Fi and excursion discounts (US$50 per stateroom, per port of call) while guests three and four in the stateroom pay only the applicable taxes for their cruise on select sailings. Bargain!

However, a cruise to the Canary Islands is not all sangria and sunbathing. There’s lots many people don’t know about the magic of the Canaries – even the name itself is something of a red herring.

We’ve taken a look at some of the amazing and little-known facts about the archipelago and NCL’s fabulous 10-day Europe: Spain, Gibraltar & Canary Islands cruise 2024 on Norwegian Epic.

Onboard you can expect world-class performers, a new wave of accommodations from Deluxe Owner’s Suites in the Haven by Norwegian to comfortable inside staterooms and a wide variety of dining options including Cagney’s Steakhouse and high-end French restaurant Le Bistro. Ashore you’ll unearth volcanos, vines, bananas and more…

The Canary Islands were not named after the bird

Go on, admit it, you thought the Canary Islands were named after the bird didn’t you? Nope, their title came from another animal entirely – dogs!

While theories do vary, the most common is that its etymology is the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning “Islands of the Dogs” after big dogs were allegedly spotted there on an expedition by Mauretanian king Juba II, an ally of the Romans.

Other theories attribute the name to the large colony of Mediterranean monk seals – sometimes known as seadogs – that once lived in the Canaries or perhaps even giant lizards.

As for the little yellow birds – Canaries are native to the Canary, Azores and Madeira islands hence their moniker.

Tenerife is home to the third-tallest volcano in the world

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is your first port of call in this group of islands during your NCL Canary Islands cruise.

The island gives another meaning to “aim high” – Mount Teide on Tenerife is the third highest volcano in the world after Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in Hawai’i and the number one highest in the whole of Spain and the Canary Islands at a massive 3,718m tall.

It began forming 170,000 years ago and is still active today, making for a majestic sight thanks to the jagged Las Cañadas escarpment and central volcano often wreathed in a sea of clouds.

Hiking the volcano and surrounding Teide National Park is a popular activity among holidaymakers on Canary Island cruise vacations and the local flora and fauna are impressive, with more than 1,000 species of invertebrates and 168 different species of plant life.

The Teide volcano on Tenerife

The Canary Islands have the fifth-largest volcanic tunnel in the world

The volcano is far from Tenerife’s only claim to fame. Cueva del Viento – or Wind Cave – in Tenerife is the largest volcanic tube in Europe, and the fifth largest in the world (the rest are found in Hawaii).

The 18 km-long cave – formed by a labyrinth of underground passages on three levels – was created by eruptions of the Pico Viejo volcano, located next to Mount Teide.

Wondering what a volcanic tunnel even is? This geological structure is a cavity that forms inside lava flows. As the lava gushes forth and makes contact with the air, the surface of the flow solidifies, through which the molten rock continues to flow until it runs out, thus forming the volcanic tube.

A two-hour potholing tour can be taken of the Cueva del Viento during Canary Island cruises – but remember to book ahead and wear appropriate clothing!

The Canary Islands are home to one of the oldest trees in the world

The good news is that your NCL Canary Islands cruise arrives in Tenerife at 8am and doesn’t leave until midnight so you’ve got plenty of time to explore all the island has to offer.

The Canary Islands dragon tree – El Drago Milenario – in Tenerife is said to be the oldest living dragon tree in the world at over 1,000 years old; it was declared a national monument in 1917 and has become one of the most legendary symbols of Tenerife.

Where did its name come from, you ask? According to legend, dragons become trees when they die and this one, in particular, produces a red resin when the bark is cut, resembling the blood of the mythical beast. The sap was once believed to have medicinal properties and was highly valued by ancient civilisations.

The tree can be seen in Drago Park situated on Plaza de la Constitución in Icod de los Vino.

Timanfaya national park canary islands

Lanzarote boasts an otherworldly natural phenomenon

Lanzarote is your third and final Canary Island cruise port of call on this NCL itinerary before Norwegian Epic sails on to Gibraltar. From the island’s capital of Arrecife you can explore Lanzarote’s many natural wonders, and you’ve got over 12 hours of port time to do so.

El Golfo Lake is situated at the southernmost point of Timanfaya National Park but while it’s on planet Earth it looks like something from another planet thanks to the water appearing to glow green.

Why? The wizardry is all thanks to the high concentration of algae in the lagoon which remains full due to the porous rock formations below the surface allowing the seawater to enter.

Its backstory is pretty cool too. The lake – a crater of a volcano – was actually formed during powerful volcanic eruptions in the 1730s, evidenced today by the black sandy beach fringing El Golfo. See if you can spot the semi-transparent green crystal known as Olivine amid the grains!

The Canary Islands have their own sport

Forget surfing, the Canary Islands have their very own traditional local sport – Lucha Canaria or Canarian Wrestling.

Wrestling bouts were originally organised by islanders to solve conflicts regarding land and other matters but the sport remains popular today and is held in arenas called “terreros”.

Canarian wrestling sees participants try to tumble their opponent (with skill more than strength) and the first to floor the other by making them touch the arena with any part of their body is the winner.

Being a good loser (and indeed winner) is key to the sport, however, and both wrestlers hug before leaving the arena.

lanzarote

Some of the strangest vineyards in the world are in Lanzarote

Wine and Canary Island cruises go hand in hand; the vineyards here are among the oldest in the world but there’s no denying Lanzarote’s look pretty weird.

Vine-growing on the island is defined by deep hollows and curved dry stone walling, known as zocos, which protect the vines from strong winds.

What’s more, vines are planted under lava and volcanic ash known as picon which retains and locks moisture into the earth allowing the hardy vines to survive.

Consequently, in inland areas, you’ll often see grape vines peeking out of a hole in the grey-black volcanic soil encircled by barriers of larger volcanic stones. Each Lanzarote vineyard has thousands of these holes and walls, each holding a single vine.

The Canary Islands have their own unique species of banana

Peckish after all that exploring? Have we got the healthy snack for you! The Canary Islands are home to Plátano de Canarias – Cavendish variety bananas (named after the British nobleman who first introduced them to the Western world) featuring distinctive brown flecks on their yellow skin due to the higher activity of enzymes.

There are three variations but all are shorter and sweeter than South American bananas thanks to all the sunshine.

Bananas have become a significant cultural symbol in the Canary Islands and are economically hugely important as a major export crop for the region – the Canaries are the ninth largest producer of bananas in the world, with an annual production of around 1.4 million tons!

Las Palmas Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands are a popular filming location for Hollywood films

New to the Canary Islands but something looks familiar? Oodles of movies have been filmed in the Canaries thanks to the dramatic scenery.

Some movie titles you might recognize are: Clash of the Titans (2010), Wrath of the Titans (2012), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Moby Dick (2015), Palm Trees in the Snow (2015), Allied (2016), Jason Bourne (2016), Wild Oats (2016), Rambo: Last Blood (2019) and Eternals (2021).

Las Palmas has the best climate in the world

The Canary Islands benefit from long, clear days and some 3,000 hours of sunshine a year with an average of 22 °C in winter and 26°C in summer.

If you really want to make the most of these perfect climes on Canary Island cruises, your NCL port of call Las Palmas, Gran Canaria’s capital, is the place to be.

According to a study by Thomas Whitmore, manager of the climatological research department at the University of Syracuse, published in 1996, Las Palmas is the city with the “most pleasant” weather in the world.

An unforgettable stop on any European cruise, with its Gothic cathedrals, medieval castle, and quaint village neighborhoods, Lisbon is Portugal's feature attraction and has been the country's capital since 1147. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of this city at your own leisurely pace, stopping along the way at a remarkable museum or 1930's era patio caf. Explore more of Lisbon on a European cruise!

The urban landscape of this famed city clearly demonstrates the contrasts between the old and the new. Start with a visit to the central market, a massive kaleidoscope of colours. Then kick off your shoes as you visit the modernist landmark of the Hassan II Mosque, the 3rd largest mosque in the world.

/sites/default/files/AGA_01_BerberOasis.jpg

Part bustling port town and part relaxing beach getaway, Agadir is a must-go. After an earthquake hit in 1960, the city had to almost completely rebuild itself. Now, it's a beach holiday destination for the whole country. Take a walk on the promenade, pick up a slice from one of the city's many delicious pizzerias, relax on the beach, and get a taste of the Moroccan street scene-all in one port.

/sites/default/files/1440-ACE-Arricife-Port-Image.jpg

The capital of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Arrecife (which means "reef' in Spanish) is renowned for its abundance of reefs and islets along its coast. If your cruise takes you to Arrecife, be sure to explore this island's many natural wonders, from the fabulous El Reducto beach to the craters, lava tunnels, canals and tubes of Los Volcanes Nature Park. Explore more of Arrecife on a European cruise!

/sites/default/files/TCI_port_modal.jpg

Located at the eastern tip of the island of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, Santa Cruz is a natural cruise destination as over half of its perimeter is shoreline. The beaches are lovely at that, from the yellow sands of Las Teresitas to the black sands of the quieter, clothing-optional Las Gaviotas. There's also plenty to do and see inland, especially if you're here during the spectacular Carnival.

/sites/default/files/881x400-Dakar-Senegal-DKR.jpg

As the cultural and economic heart of Senegal, Dakar is a lively city of contrasts. Visit gleaming mosques and cathedrals then browse the colourful stalls of one of the many bustling markets for handmade goods. Tour Place de l'Indépendance and see the colonial architecture of historic buildings lining the central square. Or trade the chaos of the city for the peacefulness of one of the nearby islands and watch surfers masterfully ride the waves. Explore the history and culture of Senegal at one of the city's museums or simply enjoy the present with a beachside stroll. Whatever aspect of Dakar you choose to explore, you'll encounter the outgoing friendliness for which the locals are well-known.

Situated on an island where the Atlantic Ocean and Gambia River converge, Banjul is the country's capital city that's bustling with commerce centered around the region's natural resources. Head to Old Town amongst the colonial architecture and visit the historic sites and museums. Or journey outside the city to soak in the warm sunshine on one of the nearby beaches or explore a nature reserve that offers excellent bird watching.

Situated along the Ébrié Lagoon and Gulf of Guinea, Abidjan is the economic capital of the Ivory Coast. A quick glance at the city skyline confirms this title. Skyscrapers tower above unique contemporary buildings that hug a bustling harbour - all evidence of the booming success of the region before the Ivorian Civil Wars occurred. Embark on a guided tour of what has been called both the "Manhattan of West Africa" and the "Paris of West Africa" and explore museums, see historic sites and striking contemporary architecture and savour delicious local cuisine. Or journey outside the city to be immersed in the lush rainforest or take to the water on a fishing tour.

Africa's second smallest nation, São Tomé and Príncipe is home to stunning natural beauty. Príncipe is an almost entirely untouched island close to the equator with a population of less than 10,000. Hikers will love trekking through untouched jungle on the way to pristine beaches. If you're looking for a less adventurous way to see the sights, you can get some of the best views from a boat trip around the island. The islands are also home to an incredible array of wildlife you can't see anywhere else. When you're ready to relax after a day of exploring, try some of the local chocolate or a fresh cup of coffee.

As the largest and capital city of Angola, Luanda offers a wide range of activities for visitors, from touring museums and historic sites to exploring the region's many beaches. During a guided tour of Luanda, you will come across colonial architecture and numerous new builds that have been part of the city's revitalisation following the end of the Angolan Civil War in 2002. Learn about the region's turbulent past, recline on a warm sandy beach or simply browse shops and markets and savour the delicious Portuguese-influenced local cuisine.

Meaning "Whale Bay," Walvis Bay is located along a natural deepwater harbour by the Namib Desert and is an ideal location for both migrating and resident birds. A birdwatcher's paradise, more than 150 bird species have been recorded in the area with Walvis Bay Lagoon being a major hotspot. Bring your camera and binoculars for the chance to see thousands of flamingos and other species congregating. Or look to the ocean for a chance to see whales or dolphins. For some sand-based excitement, head inland into the desert to Dune 7 (a staggering 1,256 feet tall) for a hike or to enjoy an exhilarating sandboarding experience.

/sites/default/files/MI.CPT_881x400.jpg

Cape Town is both the legislative capital of South Africa and one of its most vibrant cities. Make your way to the top of Table Mountain for panoramic views of the surrounding city and harbour. Visit Robben Island to see the former site of the notorious former prison that held Nelson Mandela. Explore the manicured lawns and beautiful forest in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Then stop by the V&A Waterfront for some shopping and entertainment.

Celebrity ascent: the best dining, amenities and more on celebrity cruises' newest ship.

Top-notch eateries, adults-only areas and entertainment options stand out.

Celebrity Ascent Review

The Solarium on the Celebrity Ascent.

Megan duBois

Key Takeaways

  • There are 32 different dining and drinking venues on board, from Le Voyage by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud to the line's iconic Martini Bar.
  • The onboard entertainment is incredible. The "Awaken" show combines popular music with acrobatics and lasers, while Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night invites cruisers to don metallic or sequin outfits for a deck party under the stars.
  • The Solarium adults-only pool area is a relaxing spot with comfortable lounge chairs, a pool and hot tubs; head to Eden for delightful cocktails and optimal sunset views.

You can think of Celebrity Cruises as the more adult cousin of Royal Caribbean International – which makes sense, considering both cruise lines are owned by Royal Caribbean Group. With all of the recent buzz around both brands, I was excited to sail on Celebrity Cruises' newest ship, Celebrity Ascent, in its debut month. I embarked out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in December 2023.

The 17-deck, 141,420-ton ship has 1,646 staterooms and can carry 3,260 guests at double occupancy. At 1,073 feet long and 128 feet wide, the ship has plenty of space for upscale amenities, edgy entertainment and incredible dining venues. The Edge Series ship also has more than 1,400 crew members who hail from 60 different countries around the world.

As an avid cruiser who has taken more than 50 ocean and river voyages on almost a dozen cruise lines, I found Celebrity Ascent lived up to the hype. The ship itself is stunning, and each area has a distinct vibe. I loved the ample amount of food and drink opportunities – there are 32 different venues – and the standout onboard entertainment was like nothing I had seen before on a cruise ship.

Celebrity Ascent itineraries

Thermal suite heated loungers on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent sails around the Mediterranean and the Caribbean over the next few years. Summer 2024 brings Ascent to Mediterranean ports of call in Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. The Mediterranean season ends in October 2024, with a 13-night transatlantic sailing departing from Barcelona, Spain.

Late fall and winter sailings depart from Fort Lauderdale. The Caribbean season runs between November 2024 and April 2025. It includes seven- to nine-night voyages calling on ports like Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao ; Bimini, Bahamas ; Labadee, Haiti; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands ; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; and St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In late April 2025, it's back to the Mediterranean for the 2025 season between May and October. Ascent then returns to the Caribbean for sailings in late 2025; destinations include southern Caribbean locales, plus the Panama Canal and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay. Similar Caribbean sailings are also on sale for early 2026.

Who should sail on Celebrity Ascent?

Sunset Bar on the Celebrity Ascent.

Celebrity Ascent, like its Edge Series sister ships, caters to adults traveling together. The overall vibe of the ship is upscale and modern, with plenty of places to grab a drink, enjoy a meal and watch a show. Couples can enjoy an elevated date night in Le Grand Bistro, while the aptly named Sunset Bar – which overlooks the rear of the ship – is the spot to be with a cocktail in hand as the sun sets into the horizon. This bar was easily my favorite spot on board; I spent most afternoons here enjoying a cocktail.

The deck parties, of which Ascent After Dark: Shine the Night is the premier event, are a fun time – but they aren't so loud that guests can hear the bass thumping in the staterooms below. Shows at The Theatre are fully immersive, with incredible technology and great music that had me dancing in my seat.

If you are traveling with children, know that there aren't many places on board for kids to just hang out and be kids. The Camp at Sea kids club is crammed into a small area on Deck 3, away from the main Grand Plaza and The Martini Bar.

Cruises on Ascent can be expensive, but Celebrity often runs deals on sailings. Without any promotions, sailings around the Mediterranean in 2024 and 2025 may run between about $1,000 and $5,600 per person. In comparison, 2024 and 2025 Caribbean voyages may cost between about $2,000 and $4,400 per person before discounts. (Note: Cruise rates can change frequently, based on demand and availability.)

The stateroom

Stateroom interior on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are over two dozen different stateroom styles on Celebrity Ascent. The smallest (and usually cheapest) rooms are the Inside Staterooms, which offer between 181 and 202 square feet of space. For solo travelers, the Single Inside Staterooms offer the same amenities as a double occupancy room, but with a smaller 103-square-foot layout and no single supplement fee at booking.

Ocean View Staterooms are slightly larger, at 200 to 242 square feet. There are three different room styles; the main difference among them is the size of the window. Options range from small windows in the middle of the wall to large, floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Ascent's balcony cabins are quite varied, but the majority are Infinite Veranda Staterooms, where the balcony is actually a uniquely designed window that can be opened to let the ocean breeze in. There is a set of glass doors that can be drawn to make this space more private, as well.

Concierge Staterooms allow guests access to a dedicated concierge staff and exclusive onboard events. AquaClass cabins all feature the infinite balcony design, plus unlimited access to the SEA Thermal Suite, complimentary dining at Blu restaurant, fitness classes and a spa concierge.

Celebrity Ascent's suites are all part of The Retreat, the line's ship-within-a-ship concept where cruisers have access to an exclusive restaurant, a sun deck with a pool, a lounge and a dedicated crew. Suites range in size and style, from smaller 319-square-foot studios to massive two-bedroom suites offering more than 2,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

When I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, I stayed in an AquaClass stateroom. The main living space had a king-size bed, which was cozy after long days of exploring the ship and nights spent on the dance floor. I found the cabin's couch a bit uncomfortable, but there was plenty of storage space in the large closet and drawers. Conveniently, the bed was high enough to fit my suitcases under.

Because this was my first time in an Infinite Veranda room, I was interested to see how the balcony actually worked. After pressing a button for the window to roll down, my room instantly filled with humid air – not the sea breeze I was expecting. The air conditioner also turns off when the window is down, so it takes a long time for the room to cool off again. I only opened the window once because of this. For me, the extra veranda space served as more of a sitting area to take in the views than a spot to enjoy the ocean breeze.

My stateroom's bathroom was spacious, with a larger-than-usual standup rain shower. I also loved the eco-friendly bath amenities, which smelled divine. I used the in-room bathrobes and slippers every day of the cruise.

I loved that my AquaClass stateroom came with some amenities that are not included in other Infinite Veranda rooms. There were two yoga mats, two bottles of water that were refreshed daily, a welcome bottle of sparkling wine, an umbrella, binoculars, complimentary shoeshine service and a pillow menu. AquaClass guests also have unlimited access to the spa's thermal suite, complimentary fitness classes and a dedicated spa concierge. I went to the thermal suite daily to enjoy the heated loungers and steam rooms.

Best amenities on Celebrity Ascent

Theater show on the Celebrity Ascent.

On Celebrity Ascent, you'll never be bored. Over just a few days, I was able to participate in game shows and dance parties, sit back and enjoy live music, and spend some time by the pool. While I don't gamble, the casino always seemed to be full when I walked by, and someone was always cheering about hitting the jackpot.

For live entertainment, be sure to catch Flash Flair Fusion, the nightly bartending performance at the Martini Bar. Meanwhile, the Theatre hosted three main shows during my sailing: "Residency," "Awaken" and "Bridges." (Based on my experience, "Awaken" is the production to prioritize.)

Additionally, The Club hosts most of the ship's game shows and some smaller live music events. I loved hanging out at this venue; it was never overly packed with people, and the games were pure fun. I even got called up on stage to participate in one of the games and ended up winning a Celebrity Cruises-branded hat.

For some outdoor fun, hit the onboard pickleball court. Or, head to the Rooftop Garden, where float pools face the ocean and plenty of comfy seating awaits. I loved how lush this space felt, thanks to all of the live plants surrounding the seating areas. This is also the spot to catch movies at night.

If you're looking for an even more unique place to hang out, head to The Magic Carpet. This bright orange, glass-encased bar hangs out over the side of the ship and is the perfect spot for an after-dinner drink. The Magic Carpet can move up and down the side of the ship, docking at select decks for a set amount of time. I loved hanging here at night as the ship was pulling out of port to see the islands light up and watch other ships pass by.

When planning out your evenings, keep in mind that it can be a trek to get from one onboard activity to the next – especially when there is very little time between many of the major scheduled events. One night, I started in The Club to watch a game show, then immediately had to get to the Theatre. After the theater performance, I had to walk the entire length of the ship and take the stairs to get to the night show in Eden. Then, after Eden, it was time for the Shine the Night deck party. By the time I got back to my stateroom, I was exhausted.

Best dining venues on Celebrity Ascent

Pastries at Le Grand Bistro on the Celebrity Ascent.

There are 32 different spots for food and drinks on Celebrity Ascent, including four main dining rooms; four casual complimentary eateries; eight specialty restaurants; 14 cafes, lounges and bars; and two exclusive venues.

Included with the base fare are meals at the four main dining rooms, all of which serve the same menus every day, plus a small exclusive menu that's tailored to the theme of each restaurant. (For example, if you're dining in Cyprus, there is a small list of Cyprus-exclusive dishes that highlight Mediterranean cuisine, while the Normandie restaurant serves up French favorites.)

Other restaurants included in the cruise rate are Eden Cafe & Bar, which serves light bites and sweets; Mast Grill, offering burgers and salads; and Oceanview Cafe, a buffet open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For an additional cost, head to specialty dining venues like the stunning Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, which is great for date night; Le Grand Bistro, a fun take on a classic French Bistro; or Eden Restaurant, which features an entirely plant-based menu.

My favorite specialty dining option – and overall favorite restaurant on the ship – was Raw on 5. It features stunning chilled seafood towers, fresh sashimi and hot dishes like fresh lobster and shrimp wontons. Each dish was prepared beautifully, the service was top-notch and our table next to the window offered great views.

However, one restaurant I would skip is Fine Cut Steakhouse. It is a pretty standard steakhouse, and nothing on the menu really stood out to me. The upscale ambiance was also diminished by music floating in from the nearby Grand Plaza and Martini Bar (think: everything from One Direction to Cher). While both artists are great to hear while sipping a martini in a public space, I don't want to hear them while dining at an expensive restaurant.

Best excursions on Celebrity Ascent

Outdoor sundeck on the Celebrity Ascent.

Travelers cruising to the Caribbean should book a beach outing. There are abundant excursion options in St. Maarten and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands . If you're into local brews, try the Small Group: Brewery & Beach Tour Philipsburg, St. Maarten .

On a past Mediterranean cruise, I explored both Florence and Pisa, Italy, while docked in the Italian city of Livorno. Celebrity offers a similar excursion aboard the Ascent. The day trip includes a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside; exploring Florence and seeing the Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo; and a trip to Pisa to see the iconic learning tower. In Rome , consider doing an all-day tour where you can see the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Square.

Regardless of where your cruise is headed, you may choose to explore ports on your own instead. If that's the case, be sure to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship. I always try to return at least an hour before the scheduled sail away time.

Overall impressions of Celebrity Ascent

Rooftop Garden on the Celebrity Ascent.

When it comes to ships that cater to a mostly adult audience, Celebrity Ascent really has it all. From stunning common areas to incredible dining and entertainment, I was never bored on this ship. What I loved most was the wide range of entertainment, from pop-up music around the ship to full-blown experiences that need to be seen to be believed. The food on the ship is a step above most other major cruise lines, and the number of dining options is great, especially for longer sailings.

While I loved my room's location and amenities as a whole, I found the Infinite Veranda design to be a bit of a waste. When I did use it, my room got hot quickly and took a while to cool back down. I would consider booking a traditional veranda cabin next time, or a stateroom with a large picture window to save some money without sacrificing the ocean views.
