If punting in Cambridge isn’t on your Great British bucket list then add it now. There’s nothing quite like gliding down the River Cam learning all about the history of Cambridge while on a punting tour. It really feels like you’ve stepped back in time into an old Dickens novel.

The best thing about punting in Cambridge is it takes you past sights that are otherwise impossible to see. On a Cambridge punting tour you’ll see sights like the Bridge of Sighs, the Mathematical Bridge and the back of King’s College. Punting gives you such a unique insight into what being a student at Cambridge university must be like.

Also, it’s a lot of fun snooping into all the different collages. It’s so easy imagining people like Stephen Hawking and Charles Darwin running around these places. I think there’s something so magical about that. This really is such a beautiful city to explore.

I’ve been on a few different Cambridge punting tours and they’re surprisingly different. A number of tours have former Cambridge University students as their guides – obviously these are the ones who know the university inside out. However, there are some alternative and unique tours I’ll go into too.

In this blog post I’ll take you through all the different types of tours on offer. From experiences like the popular punting & walking tour to hiring your own punt, there are so many to choose from. Also, I’ll go into the different tour prices and which one my favourite is.

Saying that, it doesn’t matter which one you choose though because you’re in for an amazing time. As I said, it’s one of those classic British experiences that you just have to do at least once in your life.

What is punting in Cambridge?

For those of you who don’t know (I’m thinking of all you tourists here!), a punt is a flat-bottomed boat designed for getting around shallow rivers. One person (the punter) stands on the back of the boat with a long wooden pole in their hands. They then use this pole to push off the shallow river bed and to steer the punt. And in a nutshell, that’s what punting is.

Everyone always confuses punting and the gondolas of Venice as being the same thing, but they’re not. A gondola is a completely different type of boat to a punt. The locals can get a bit tetchy about this so make sure you call the boats punts and not gondolas.

Punting was first used to transport cargo around the rivers of Cambridge. It wasn’t until around 1902 that people started punting for fun. Fast forward to today and there are more punts on Cambridge than any other river in England .

Punting on the River Cam has become synonymous with life here and it is without a doubt one of the top things to do in Cambridge. Honestly, you really can’t quite beat punting in the summer when the sun’s shining. It is such a good experience.

There are two places where you can go punting in Cambridge. One is at the Backs – this is the most popular place where you’ll find the Bridge of Sighs, the Mathematical Bridge and King’s College.

The other place is Grantchester – this is a lot quieter, so if you’re thinking of punting yourself (as opposed to a tour) then this is the place to do it. You can also stop off at a riverside pub for lunch.

What are the types of tours?

Usually there are 3 types of tours you are go on.

Shared group tour – This is the cheapest type of tour where you share a punt with other tourists. If you’re lucky then sometimes you’ll share a boat with only a couple of other people. In summer though these boats are usually full.

Private tour – A private tour is where you hire a punt and someone to punt it for you. This means you’ve got a guide all to yourself who’ll go through the history of Cambridge. This type of tour is perfect for large groups or families. Also, this type of tour is really popular with hen parties too. Something a little different for your hen party there.

Hire your own punt – If you’re feeling brave you can hire you own punt for a couple of hours or for the afternoon. This is where you’ll steer the boat yourself which is a lot harder than it looks. This is great if you’re up for an adventure though and you can even bring along your own picnic too. Usually it takes around 30 minutes to get comfortable with poling the punt, so factor in that time.

The best Cambridge punting tours

There are a number of different companies to choose from. One of the oldest and my favourite is Scudamore’s punting company. This is the tour that I’ve done which takes you past places like Clare College Gardens and the Wren Library.

This tour takes 45-minutes and is the ideal introduction to Cambridge’s long and eventful history. The guides at Scudamore’s are often ex-students so I can’t recommend these guys enough.

For those of you who like to do things yourself, you can hire a punt . This is usually for 90 minutes with up to 5 seated passengers and one brave volunteer from your group to punt. I’ve tried it before and it takes a few tries before you master the knack of it, but then it’s smooth sailing.

If you’re like to see more of Cambridge then I’d recommend this punting and walking tour . On this tour a Cambridge graduate will take you on a 90-minute walking tour around the city where you’ll visit all the famous chapels and libraries. Then you’ll go on a 50-minute punting tour on the River Cam where you’ll get to see a completely different side of the city. You will even have a a free punting lesson during your tour. This is a really fantastic tour for people who want to see some more of the city – it’s one of the highest rated tours too.

Cambridge punting price

The Cambridge punting price varies depending on what type of tour you book and which day you go on.

Usually, a ticket for a shared group tour on a weekday is around £12. This is around £14 on the weekends.

Hiring a 12-person punt can cost around £120 on a weekday and £150 on the weekend. However, this does include a guide.

When it comes to punting prices in Cambridge, I would always book online and book ahead too. This is how you’ll get the cheapest tickets, and often you’ll find some good deals. The prices can be a lot more expensive if you book spontaneously on the day.

If you do want to splash out on a private punting tour of Cambridge, the cheapest deals are usually early morning/evening slots or weekdays, where you could find a price as good as £100 for two on an evening.  Private Cambridge river tour prices in the summer season are likely to be much higher if booked closer to the time.

An alternative money-saving option for a private tour if you’ve not booked in advance is to haggle on the day. Licensed punt tour promoters can be found at the Quayside, Jesus Green and the Mill Pond, so discuss with them how you can reach a price that meets your budget.  In low season you might just get a better price than online but that depends on demand, the weather and, of course, your negotiating skills in getting the cheapest deal.

My best-kept secret to get the cheapest Cambridge punting price is to hire a boat and punt yourself.  For only £20 per hour , you can rent your own punt from Trinity College .  If you fill the boat with the maximum of six passengers that works out at just over £3 per person.  It’s an unbelievably cheap price for punting in Cambridge but, having done it many times, I can confirm that it’s very much a genuine deal. 

Advance booking isn’t possible for this cheap price, instead you just turn up on the day, which means you may have to queue for a short while during peak season.  Half an hour or so waiting in the glorious Cambridge sunshine might be worth it though for such a great deal. 

Access is via Trinity College.  Walk down Garret Hostel Lane and turn right through the gates into Trinity College, just before Garret Hostel Bridge.  Trinity punts are available from the Friday before Easter until mid-October.

Other options available for self punting in Cambridge include:

Once you’ve chosen self punting through Cambridge the fun begins.  Punting is really pretty simple.  In Cambridge, the punter stands at the back of the boat on the raised part.  Drop the punt pole into the river, give it a little push and away you go.  Move your hands to the top of the pole, lift it up from the river bed, letting the pole drag behind the punt, and repeat. 

To steer, after the end of the pole has lifted up from the river bed, move it behind you to the left or right, like a rudder.

There are two main routes for Cambridge river punting.  The most well-known option is to punt through the city centre of Cambridge, which offers stunning views of historic Cambridge Colleges as you float through a land that it sometimes feels like time forgot. On this route you’ll be able to get plenty of Instagrammable photos of Cambridge .

However, if you’re looking for a less busy route, head southwest towards Grantchester village .  You’ll pass Hodson’s Folly, Paradise Nature Reserve and end up at the gorgeous Grantchester Meadows.  It takes approximately 3 hours to punt to Grantchester and back.  Tours are available which include time to explore the village or of course you can opt for self-hire punting and do it yourself. 

Depending on where you set out from, you may also have the fun of using the punt rollers near The Mill pub.  This is an ingenious device designed to get a punt out of one part of the river and down into the other side.

The most common size of punt can fit six people in it.  This is the size boat you’ll be given if you choose self-hire punting in Cambridge.  However, for guided tours, there are much bigger boats which can take up to 12 passengers.

Typical items to take punting are strawberries and a bottle of something fizzy.  So pack a picnic and clothes you don’t mind getting the odd drop of water on and you’ll be good to go.

Seeing people fall into the River Cam is a pretty regular occurrence if you spend any time at all watching punting in Cambridge.  However, it’s often a result of trying to hang on to a punt pole that’s got stuck in the mud, whilst the punt carries on moving.  To stay dry, leave the pole where it is and use the oar that’s provided to turn your punt around and go back for the pole. Thankfully, punts are actually really hard to capsize due to their shape.

Yes it’s possible to hire a punt in Cambridge for yourself, rather than join a shared punting tour. Trinity College punts are one of the best self-hire options for punting in Cambridge.

Autumn and spring are the best seasons to go punting in Cambridge.  This is due to lower numbers of people on the river, giving you more of a laid-back experience. 

The summer season can get so busy that at points on the river punt traffic jams start to build up (yes, it’s a thing).  That being said, there are worse places to be stuck in traffic, so if you’re here in summer sit back and enjoy the entertainment of watching multiple people trying to manoeuvre punts out of a tight spot whilst not falling into the water below.  To get more room on the beautiful Cambridge river (and a better price) go punting during the late afternoon, at around 4 or 5 pm.

Morning punting.

The morning is a wonderful time to be on the river, it is quiet, serene, and quite beautiful. It is also the most economical so what’s not to love!

If you book a private or shared chauffeured punting tour that departs before 11.45 am you will secure the best rates available for the day in question. Weekend tours are priced higher, but you will find that our prices are very competitive compared to other local punting companies.

Our Early Bird offer is perfect for families with young children who are often up early and making the most of the day. Our chauffeured tours along the Cambridge College Backs are the ideal family day out and are safe for children of all ages.

Know Before You Go

There is no need to queue and wait. We recommend that you wait on Jesus Green until you receive our SMS departure alert. This will let you know that we are ready to load your boat.

Our tours are booked for specific times, and you should be aware that late arrival may result in you having a shortened tour or missing your tour altogether.

We do recommend that you come prepared bringing food and drink onboard to make the trip that extra bit special.

Families are welcome to leave prams and pushchairs at our check in area. Please note however that this is done at your own risk.

In the event of poor weather, we do still go ahead although we will do our best to reschedule where possible. Should you choose to cancel due to poor weather you will be eligible for a 70% refund. You can find out more information in our Terms & Conditions.

Chauffeured Cambridge Punting Tours

Our punting tours will take you along the ‘College Backs’ passing seven of the most famous riverside colleges. This includes Magdalene, St Johns, Trinity, Clare, Trinity Hall, Kings, and Queens. • The Plough 45 min trip to Jesus Lock one-way 10am

• Jesus Lock to The Plough 45 min one-way 5pm

Or make a day of it and park at The Plough, go into the city on the 10am tour, then return from the city at Jesus Lock at 5pm trip arriving back at The Plough just before 6pm, just in time for a meal – Pre-booking a table direct with the pub is required if eating or drinking.

30 minute round-trip cruises at The Plough Fen Ditton. Route BB From The Plough Fen Ditton – Route goes downstream along the rowing race ‘bumps’ part of the river and the A14 bridge, or upstream towards Chesterton and the railway bridge. Pre-booking sometimes available up to 2 days in advance. Price B

45 minute round-trip cruises at The Plough Fen Ditton Route CC Slightly longer version of the above trips. From The Plough Fen Ditton – Route goes downstream along the rowing race ‘bumps’ part of the river to Baits Bite Lock, or upstream towards Chesterton and Stourbridge Common. Pre-booking sometimes available up to 2 days in advance. Price A

45 minute one-way cruises starting at Jesus Lock or The Plough From Jesus Green Lock or The Plough Fen Ditton – Route includes the historic college boathouses, Midsummer Common and Riverside, past Chesterton and Ditton Meadows. Bolt together the one-way trip into the city for shopping and return late afternoon out to The Plough for a drink or meal. Price D Alternative just the one-way to The Plough at 5pm. Price C Pre-booking sometimes available up to 2 days in advance.

Approx 1½ hour split trip route  (2 x 45 mins) From The Plough Fen Ditton – Route includes the historic college boathouses, Midsummer Common and Riverside, Chesterton and Ditton Meadows. Bolt together the one-way trips into the city for shopping, then back out at the end of the day to The Plough for a drink/meal. Subject to availability. Price D

Established in 2007, The Cambridge Punt Company has been providing guided river tours along the Cambridge backs for over 15 years. A small independent company, operating from La Mimosa Mooring station, Jesus Green. Punting prices explained

Our prices for shared and private tours are highly competitive and vary depending on season, day of the week and time of tour. Punting prices for off peak days during the week are offered at a reduced price and our best prices are always available by pre-booking online rather than paying on the day.

Best Way To Book

For the best price, it’s best to pre-book your tour online before arrival. This guarantees reservation of your seat for a fixed time, saving you time and reducing the need to wait for the next available tour.  All payments made online are safe and secure.

If you are free to book on the day in person, tickets can be purchased from one of our sales tours on Quay Side, or directly from the station, located on Jesus Green. We accept cash and all major credit and debit cards. Please note that prices for tours on the day may differ from online prices, and availability may be limited during peak times.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to go punting in cambridge.

Morning tours are the most peaceful and can be a great way to start your day in Cambridge. During the tour you will learn about the history of Cambridge University, giving you a great understanding before you begin to explore the rest of the city on foot. All our guides are highly  informative, and aside from the history, can offer suggestions for other activities and places to visit .

Afternoon tours are the busiest, especially during the peak seasons between July and August. Expect to see many first time punters bumping into each hour, students floating down the river on inflatables and to hear the occasional splash after an unlucky punter has fallen in. 

Sunset tours are the perfect way to relax after a busy day of exploring the historic streets of Cambridge on foot. By this time, the chaos of the afternoon has begun to settle and the river begins to calm down. If the weather allows, as the sun sets the sandstone building becomes cast in a golden hue.

Self hire punting

We only offer guided punting tours at the Cambridge Punting Company, which allow you to relax and leave the hard work of punting to us. However, for the daring few who wish to give it a go and punt themselves, smaller self hire punts can be rented from a handful of punt operators. 

Pricing for self hire is charged by the hour, with prices usually beginning at around £25 per hour. Although we make it look easy, please remember that it can be difficult to manoeuvre the boat and punt in a straight line, especially during peak times. Make sure you can swim and remove all valuables from your pocket before venturing out.

Where to buy tickets  

If you decide to purchase your tickets on the day rather than pre booking online, you can find us at Jesus Green Moorings. Please note that the time between ticket purchase and tour departure can vary depending on availability.

Where to arrive and arrival time

I f you have reserved your seat and booked online, please arrive at our station on Jesus green at least 10 minutes before departure. Look out for our logo and friendly staff.

Luggage storage

Prams and luggage can be left at the station or taken on board if there is space available. Although we will ensure to take care of your belongings, please note that all personal property is left at the owner’s risk.

What happens if it rains?

In the unfortunate event that it begins to rain, all tours will go ahead in the rain. We have plenty of large umbrellas to keep you dry.

How much does a private tour cost?

The price of private tours varies depending on the time and season. Low season private tours are available from £80 for 2 people, whereas peak season private tours begin at £120 when booked online. Discounts are available for larger bookings of more than 12 people. Please contact us here for more information.

How much does a shared tour cost?

The price of private tours varies depending on the time and season. Low season shared punting tours are available from £15 per person, whereas peak season tours begin at £25 when booked online. Please refer to our pricing chart for specific prices.

How much does a self-fire punt cost?

Self Hire punting is charged by the hour and payable upon return. Prices and availability can vary between companies, with prices starting at around £25 per hour.

Can tickets be purchased in person?

Tickets can be purchased in person, either from one of our tours on the Quayside or directly from our punt station on Jesus Green. Please remember that the cost of tickets purchased on the day can vary depending on availability. For the best prices it’s always better to pre book and purchase your punting ticket online.

Charged at £20 per adult, £18 for concessions and students, under 16 years £10. We take cash or card.

Large tour groups

Cambridge Chauffeur Punts can cater for groups of up to 150 people. We specialise in conference groups and weddings, and offer discounts for student groups. Please contact us with an estimate of numbers and your planned date for a price quotation.

Self-hire punts

Charged at £30 per hour per punt and per quarter hour thereafter. Discounts available for all day hire, local residents and students.

We have 20 self hire punts available for hire. Self hire punts can be hired on arrival, you only need to book in advance if you have a large group and require a number of boats or are coming in the early morning or late evening. We don't take bookings at busy times of the year at weekends during the afternoons, we work on a first come first serve basis.

Enjoy a delicious Thai Meal on board whilst taking in the sights. The price includes a set menu of freshly cooked Thai food that includes a selection of 5 dishes. We can comfortably accommodate up to 9 people per boat and can cater for groups of up to 50.
