My husband and I did the Classic Brew Tour through Burlington yesterday, and we could not be more impressed with the City Brew Tours experience - the caliber of the tour itself, the breweries we visited, and our tour guide all exceeded our expectations. The cost was more than reasonable for the beer and food that were included. The booking process was simple and smooth; the tour ran efficiently without us feeling rushed. Our guide, Kianna, was warm, funny, knowledgeable, and made the experience memorable. Her narration of the history of beer in between stops was humorous and educational! Tour was great. Did first republic, good water and zero gravity. Beers were delicious, learned a lot about the brewing process and our tour guide Matt H was a blast!

We took the brew tour in Burlington last Sunday and we had a great time! Ours was a bit of an unorthodox tour, as the tour bus had some issues that day (happens). City tours called us and warned us of the problem and delay which was fine, as we were being picked up at our hotel. They resolved the problem quickly and our guide was there and ready to go within 15 minutes of the originally scheduled time. Our guide Lauren was fantastic! She handled the mishap with grace and without skipping a beat. City tours had to have Ubers take us from brewery to brewery which worked out perfectly fine in the end. On to the tour itself, we were a smaller group, which I loved! We stopped at 4 locations and we sampled A LOT of beer. (I don't understand the reviews saying you barely get 3 drinks because by the end of it my husband and I could barely drink the last beers) We got behind the scenes tours at 2 of the breweries. Goodwater was my personal favorite. Lauren gave us a phenomenal history lesson along the way, which I fully nerded out to. All in all, it was a really fun experience that both, my husband and I, would recommend trying!

Photo of Jordan W.

Our guide Mikayla was lovely. They advertised a snack which we didn't get. It was a $99 tour scheduled from 5:45 to 9:15 but without dinner. It was a lot of drinking without any food which was odd. They take you to very small, remote breweries outside of Burlington. The breweries were fine but nothing special. At 2/3 spots you can't select your own beers. No beer blew us away. And we didn't get to try any of the big name breweries on our list. Overpriced for the experience.

Photo of Cory B.

My group made a wonderful decision to hop onto this brew tour. It's highly professional, entertaining, convenient and fun. After experiencing it I would I would argue this tour is the best way to experience all of Burlingtons brewery scene. For some background me and my group where doing a roudtrip from Portland Maine to Burlington Vermont for 2 days. We only really had one day in Burlington itself and originally planned to see the market center and some breweries when we looked up this tour group and decided to try it out. One of the nice things about this tour is convenience. The tour stops at 3 different breweries with one of them always being Magic Hat (which I also recommend going to.) You don't have to map out or try to park at all these locations. Further, this tour arranges your lunch with a nice local restaurant. You don't have to search for any places in a more sparse part of the city. Additionally our brew tour guide himself was fantastic. He is a local himself and is a erudite regarding beer and Burlington. While driving he will additional give you a tour of the city, letting you know about his landmarks, its history and its controversies. For beer he is very competent and knowledgeable about the history of beer and the history of the breweries we attended. He was very likable and when one of our group told him she didn't like beer he tried to accommodate her for her tastes. The only reason you might not choose to take this tour, I would imagine, is if you specifically want to attend a single brewery or two. My group wanted to really attend two specific breweries, Magic Hat and Switchback... Magic Hat is always part of the tour and lucky for us Switchback was included in their rotational breweries! We may not have been so lucky though and would had to go to Switchback separately from this tour. With the fantastic tour guide and its great convenience I think you get a lot of your ticket price for this tour group. I highly recommend this group.

Hi Cory, Great pictures! Thank you for such a thoughtful review; I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed our tour! I hope we see you again sometime in Boston, NYC, or one of our other 6 cities. Cheers!!

City Brew Tours did a fantastic job of coordinating the event with excellent customer service. They were quick to respond! Emily and Aj were super helpful puting this together. We went with a group of 8 guys for a bachelor party in Stowe, VT. The private brewery tour was full of excitement, knowledge and entertainment. Our "beer guide" Frank did an amazing tour and knows a ton about beer! He's a fun and outgoing guy - we couldn't have asked for anyone else. We highly recommend him and the company. We'll be back for you for round 2 - City Brew tours! Sam

Keanna is an absolute delight. She cured my lifelong affliction with depression using nothing but alcohol and good conversation. I am of the opinion that she should be promoted to the highest orders of the organization and given all the stock options and beers that you offer. My fellows groomsmen and I were pansies and couldn't finish their beers. But I was a friggin champ and took one of the team. We had 12 beers over the course and had the entire van to ourselves. Best bachelor's party I ever been on. After going on city brew tours, I am now better looking, healthier, and financially successful. Thanks city brew tours! Looking forward to getting hammered with you in every city I visit!

Sep 17, 2021

Thanks, Kenny! Your recommendation for Kianna's promotion has been duly (and most seriously) noted. It seems like we can mark this tour / bachelor party down as a success, especially if you've come out on the other end healthier and better looking. Glad to hear you enjoyed the beer samples and the brew tour, and maybe we'll see you for another bachelor party celebration in the future.

Another wonderful review and vote for Kianna! She was exceptional, and by the end of our tour we wanted her to join our bachelorette party! All around it was a great tour guided by an even greater tour guide. Us FL girls really enjoyed our trip and this particular day was the highlight of it.

I cannot recommend Burlington Brew Tours enough. Our friends has recommended it to us and we thought it was a great Saturday night activity. It is well worth the $90 per person!! You get 15-16 beer samples which are pretty much a 4 oz pour and dinner from this amazing pizza place. Our tour guide Soren and the 2nd tour guide who was shadowing Soren, were both amazing. Soren was so friendly, knowledgeable, personable and made we sure were all happy with the beer. Having a great tour guide definitely made the tour even better. We made some friends along our tour and it was really really fun. I love that they bring you place to place and you get to try beers and if you want have additional. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great activity. I would do this again even going to the same breweries- that's how fun it was. Thanks for having us and for the great brew tour!!

6 Outstanding Breweries in Burlington Vermont

By Author Tara Schatz

Posted on Published: August 15, 2022

Vermont is a magnet for beer lovers. The state has more craft breweries per capita than any other US state, and Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, is one of the best spots to imbibe in your favorite craft brews.

A collage of photos featuring Burlington Vermont breweries.

Not that it’s all about the beer — the city is known for its gorgeous lake-front setting, foodie culture, and walkable downtown. But, if you’ve got craft beer on your mind, and want to try a selection of Vermont’s finest sudsy beverages, head to Burlington for a weekend .

But first, download the Vermont Brewers Association app — where you can find Vermont breweries, earn rewards, create your own beer trails, and participate in brewery challenges.

And speaking of beer trails, all of the Burlington breweries mentioned below are part of the Burlington beer trail. Most are within biking distance of each other, and all of the breweries we visited are dog-friendly, at least during the summer when you can sit outside with them.

Some of these spots serve mouth-watering meals to go with their amazing selection of beers. Others allow you to bring your own food or provide snacky menu items. We love Vermont eats as much as we love Vermont beers, so we’ll be sure to highlight some of our favorite breweries for noshing too.

There are 11 beer trails throughout Vermont — be sure to explore them all.

From the hoppiest New England IPAs to authentic German-style brews, and over-the-top sours, here are the most incredible breweries in Burlington Vermont for your next craft beer getaway.

Want someone else to do the driving? Hop on the Brew Bus for an insider look at Burlington’s craft brewery scene. The  Burlington Brewery tour  brings you to four breweries and includes a beer-themed meal at a local restaurant.

Burlington Beer Company: Eclectic Meals, Fantastic Brews

Address: 180 Flynn Avenue, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: Yes, for indoor dining Hours: 7 days a week from 12 to 9 pm

A vegetarian meal and flight of beers at Burlington Beer Company in Burlington, Vermont.

Located in a 120-year-old brick building within walking distance of Oakledge Park in Burlington’s South End, Burlington Beer Company (BBCO) has been shaking up the local beer industry since 2014.

If you are looking for a fantastic menu to go with a very eclectic selection of beers, you will love all the fun pairings you can create at Burlington Beer Company. In reality, there are too many beer selections to choose from, but they make it easy with four flight options to help you get to know the beers a little better.

Are you a beer lover planning a trip to Vermont's largest city? Here are the best breweries in Burlington Vermont to add to your list.

We are lucky to be able to find four packs of BBCO beer near home, so I already had some favorites when we visited the taproom in July. I went with a seasonal flight, which consisted of four shots of summer — Strawberry Whale Cake, Raspberry Whale Cake, Double Easy Tiger, and Double Sunken City. This collection of gose and cream ales was exactly what I needed as I watched the sun set on a 100-degree day.

During our summer visit, BBCO had 30 beers on tap, plus a nice selection of ciders, kombucha, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beers.

We would have visited Burlington Beer for the drinks alone, but this vegetarian was surprised and delighted by the food as well.

The menu includes several great salads, sandwiches, and entrees. I opted for a seitan grain bowl with farro, roasted mushrooms, shredded cabbage, crispy chickpeas, and Greek-style seitan. Even my meat-eating companions were a bit envious.

Zero Gravity Craft Brewery: Hoppy and Hoppin’ Burlington Brewery

Address: 716 Pine Street, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: No reservations accepted Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 8 am – 9 pm, Friday – 8 am – 10 pm

The front entrance to Zero Gravity Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

Zero Gravity Craft Brewery is open starting at 8 am for coffee and waffles (get the maple latte), and moving seamlessly to beer and a small, but delicious food menu starting at 2 pm.

Of all the Burlington breweries we visited this summer (for research, of course), Zero Gravity was the busiest, with the longest wait for a table. The yummy food and delightful beers were well worth the wait, though, and we were able to play a rowdy game of pool while scouting for a table.

A dog-friendly covered patio is a perfect spot to relax on a rainy summer afternoon, and if you visit during the winter months, you can chill on a comfy sofa in front of a crackling fire.

A vegetarian meal at Zero Gravity Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

At Zero Gravity, you place your order at the counter, grab your beer, and chillax while you wait for your food. While the menu is limited, our food was quick, beautifully presented, and super yummy. Eric can never resist a bratwurst, especially when it comes with house-made sauerkraut. I had the chickpea fritter plate.

Since it was raining, I opted for my first stout of the trip — an Irish-style Extra Stout, which was so chocolatey and dark, that I was forced to skip dessert.

Zero Gravity beers are widely available throughout Vermont, but you can get some unusual selections from the cooler to take home for your nightcap. They also have a great merch selection for all your gift-giving needs.

Queen City Brewery: Authentic German-Style Beer

Address: 703-B Pine Street, Burlington, VT (right across the street from Zero Gravity) Dogs: Yes, inside and out Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: Queen City does not serve food, but you can order pizza next door at Pizza 44 or bring your own food. Hours: Sunday – Thursday, 1 pm-8 pm; Friday – Saturday, 12 pm-9 pm

burlington brew tours

Queen City Brewery was founded in 2012 with a mission to create traditional beer styles. In a craft-beer world that is largely dominated by fruity IPAs, Queen City stands out with its robust collection of German-style beers, including a smooth Munich Dunkel, easy-drinking Vienna Lager, and the classic Yorkshire Porter.

It’s true that we were longing for something a bit more traditional and less hoppy when we visited Queen City, and we were delighted with the offerings!

Because Queen City does not operate a kitchen, dogs are welcome indoors and out. We opted for patio seating and a few flights of magical concoctions. We ordered a Farmer Salad and the pesto-based “Go Ask Alice” pizza from Pizza 44 next door. They texted us when our food was ready, and we hopped over to pick it up in under 30 seconds.

The outdoor patio at Queen City Brewery in Burlington Vermont.

Did we have favorites? Absolutely! At home in Bennington, I can pick up a six-pack of Yorkshire Porter at the grocery store, and it’s my favorite cool-weather brew. As it was a sweltering summer evening, I ordered a flight of low-alcohol beers and then a Hefeweizen, which was one of the best I’ve ever tasted!

Eric continues to talk about all the Queen City beers he fell in love with, as well as the ones he didn’t get a chance to try. Our Queen City experience was one of our favorite to date, and we are already making plans to head back to Burlington with coolers full of ice.

A couple sits on a dog-friendly patio at Switchback Brewing in Burlington Vermont.

Switchback Brewing was founded in 2002 with a no-nonsense approach to creating delicious drinkable beers, and their flagship beer, Switchback Ale, has been a staple at pubs and package stores around Vermont for many years. Switchback Ale is unfiltered and packaged in stout bottles, perfect for parties, barbecues, and late-night TV sessions.

The Switchback taproom opened in 2014 and is known as one of the best breweries in Burlington Vermont for fun beer-themed events like Stretch-and-Sip Yoga, cribbage tournaments (beer and cribbage is a great combo!), dog PAWties, and live music. Visit on Mondays for $5 pints of Switchback Ale.

Food at Switchback is limited, with a choice of dogs (hot dog, beer brat, or veggie dog) plus a variety of toppings. They’ve also got vegan chili and some snacks.

Eric and I both enjoyed the extra pale ale on another one of those steamy Burlington evenings.

Foam Brewers: A Fun Waterfront Brewery with Late Weekend Hours

Patrons sit at the bar at Foam Brewers in Burlington Vermont.

Foam Brewers is a small craft brewery on the Burlington waterfront, with another location called The Annex in Hinesburg. With its funky bar-like atmosphere, great outdoor seating, and a stellar selection of delicious IPAs, Foam Brewers caters to the younger, beer-loving generation, but we had no trouble keeping up!

Menu items are displayed on bright screens around a busy bar. Order 8 or 12-ounce pours or fill a growler to take home for later. You can also choose from a small selection of munchies (charcuterie, chips and salsa, olives, and the like).

I went with a small pour of “Together or Alone,” which was fruity and hoppy, and exactly how I imagine a Burlington beer when I’m not in Burlington. Eric had the lager (In Another Life), and we both came away happily hopped and ready to explore the town.

We’ve heard tell of Foam Brewers’ newest venture, Deep City Restaurant , and are looking forward to tasting their vegan poutine very soon! We’ll keep you posted.

Vermont Pub and Brewery: The Original Downtown Brew Pub

Address: 144 College Street, Burlington, VT Dogs: Yes, outside Outdoor seating: Yes Reservations: Yes Hours: Wednesday -Sunday, 11:30 am – 9 pm

The Vermont Pub and Brewery has been a fixture in downtown Burlington since 1988, and I’ll admit that visiting still makes me sentimental for those crazy days of my youth, when I would start the night here with friends and a Burly Irish Ale (or two). I spent a good portion of my 21st birthday here, and am delighted that the beer is still flowing freely and the pub food is still a delight.

The Vermont Pub and Brewery in Burlington, Vermont

While they no longer have my favorite Burly Irish Ale on the menu, or at least they didn’t during our visit, I was excited to try a Fancy Maple Pants Ale. This is a delicious amber ale brewed with maple syrup from Stonyhill Sugar House in Fletcher.

Pubs are not often vegetarian-friendly, but I’ve had the black bean burger here before and it was delish — served with brew fries or a wholesome salad.

The Vermont Pub and Brewery has a great dog-friendly patio and live music and Wednesday and Thursday evenings, plus Sunday afternoons. If you’re looking for fun beer offerings and casual comfort food within walking distance of downtown, this is your spot.

Halyard Brewery

Halyard Brewery wasn’t your typical beer joint. Tucked away in a beer-loving city, Halyard was on a quest to revive a nearly forgotten beverage: alcoholic ginger beers.

One sip and you’ll understand why they’ve dedicated themselves to rediscovering this “lost art” and sharing it with America.

Bill Cherry, a master brewer, and Jeff Neiblum, a longtime acquaintance, founded Switchback Brewing Company in 2002. The vision was to concentrate limited resources on making beers of the highest possible quality.

Citr-Pils is a traditional Kellerbier or pilsener lager brewed with a combination of Citra and Saaz hops. The hops add a citrusy aroma, pilsner and IPA sensibilities, and a crisp flavor. It is a clean and refreshing beverage with a base of Light Pils that accentuates the lemony citrus notes.

So why is Switchback so popular? It is nearly impossible not to enjoy their beer, mainly because they offer three different year-round brews and six rotating seasonals. They are also known for their delicious food, including smoked paprika bratwurst served with sauerkraut, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese curds on the side!

If you can only visit one of the top Burlington VT breweries, we definitely recommend Switchback.

LOCATION: 144 College Street Burlington, VT 05401 | PHONE: (802) 865-0500

Vermont Pub and Brewery, also known as VPB to locals, is located in downtown Burlington’s “quieter” area. It is an excellent spot to grab drinks with friends or enjoy a first date.

It was founded in 1988 by the late renowned craft-brewing pioneer and author Greg Noonan, who campaigned to make brewpubs legal in Vermont. The small 14-barrel brewhouse is supplemented by a half-barrel experimental system, allowing for the production of over 80 styles of beer annually.

VPB is the longest-running microbrewery in Vermont . This brewery is renowned for its superior quality and extensive history. This brewery is also well-known for continually developing improved beer formulas, which they have done repeatedly.

Currently (at the time of writing this article), VPB adheres to all Vermont Department of Health, OSHA, and CDC regulations. Six feet is the minimum spacing between tables and chairs, and workers and visitors must always wear face coverings. Everyone entering the building is necessary to call ahead to prevent crowding. All surfaces are disinfected in the establishment regularly, and hand sanitizer is available on each table and in the staff area. It’s definitely more of a “on the safe side” brewery compared to the other atmospheres.

Citizen archivists are helping reveal the untold stories of Revolutionary War veterans

burlington brew tours

Tunis Cole was obviously proud of his service in the war and his role in the fight for American freedom.

And the Revolutionary War veteran hoped that he could have some measure of financial security in his old age. So Cole wrote to the U.S. government to ask for a pension made possible by a series of laws passed in the 1800s.

"...That having been encouraged to do so, (Cole) prays Government to look favorably upon his claims and grant him something to relieve his wants and give him comfort in this Autumn of his Earthly existence, that he may close his eyes in gratitude upon a nation upon whose altar of Freedom he has devoted many of the best years of his youth…"

Cole's 1848 pension application was written, like thousands of other veterans' applications, by hand – sometimes by the vets themselves, sometimes by their widows, sometimes by friends who helped the elderly farmers and tradesmen who'd taken up arms for their new country.

Because the records of the day weren't always reliable or consistent, many veterans had to include details to prove their service: their units, their deployments and leaves, their comrades in arms and commanding officers, the places they fought, and even the horrors they witnessed.

Now, almost 250 years later, Americans are hearing a new call to arms. Citizen archivists are needed to transcribe original pension applications from the nation's first veterans into a massive database − and help reveal their extraordinary and untold stories.

Who are citizen archivists? How this history fan gets to read JFK's telegrams, Titanic insurance claims, UFO docs

'America's first veterans' and the country's 250th birthday

The collaborative effort by the National Park Service and the National Archives targets the roughly 2 million pages of handwritten pension applications from the Revolutionary War that are already scanned and digitized. Organizers want a database that can be searched by battles, names, dates and more.

The pensioners' applications can be as short as a couple of pages or as long as 100 pages, Suzanne Isaacs and Nancy Sullivan, community managers with the National Archives, told USA TODAY. There are about 83,000 of them, Isaacs said, and the park service and Archives are really only at the start of what will likely be a multiyear project.

.So far, according to Jason Wickersty of the park service, 52,360 pages have been transcribed, and 1,602 pensions completed.

The goal? To have as many records transcribed by citizen volunteers as possible ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 so that park service guides can incorporate some of the stories into their tours of historic sites and so that historians and genealogists can have a searchable database of information.

"It's a huge project," Isaacs said. "But these are America's first veterans," men who can offer a glimpse into everyday conditions. Their widows' accounts also provide a look at life on the homefront, Sullivan said. Some vets couldn't write, so they dictated their stories to others, signing the applications with an "X" or other mark.

Black soldiers and Native Americans also served, and their accounts will help the Park Service tell a far more complete story, Wisckersty said.

Isaacs and Sullivan, archivists but not historians, said they've learned a lot, even in the project's nascent stage.

'A particularly revealing snapshot' of soldiers' lives

Wickersty is the park service's liaison to the pension project and one of the people who came up with the idea to enlist volunteers to transcribe accounts. A New Jersey resident who originally had an interest in the Civil War, he realized he was surrounded by Revolutionary War history. He turned his attention to that war and, working with fellow park service coordinators Joanne Blacoe and Cris Constantine, as well as Isaacs and Sullivan, started transcribing.

After the War of 1812, a crisis was brewing among America's first veterans, and many of them were sliding into poverty as they aged, he said. President James Monroe, a veteran himself, was behind the first service-based pension in 1818. Four major pension acts would be passed from 1818 to 1836 to expand eligibility to more veterans and their survivors. After an initial lump sum, enlisted soldiers received $96 annually and officers, $240.

Pensions were meant for veterans in need, and in 1820 pension rolls were voided to keep out wealthy vets. Within months, most veterans reapplied but had to provide proof of their financial situations, so the second round of applications included not just the vets' experiences during the war, but also lists of assets (down to individual pieces of furniture and housewares in some cases), family members and dependents, information about their health and more.

"This is a particularly revealing snapshot of America's first veterans as they aged into their 60s, how hard the service was on their bodies, and how little they improved in their station," Wickersty said. "Most veterans were racked by rheumatism, and several owned nothing but the clothes they wore and a single smoking pipe."

An 1832 law opened eligibility to militia members, not just those who had served in the Continental Army. However, since militias didn't usually issue discharge papers, veterans had to give oral testimony and provide witnesses, adding even more detail to their accounts. Pensioners were paid on a pro-rated basis depending on their rank and time of service, anywhere from $20 for a private who had served six months to the highest-paid pensioner, New Jersey's William Gamble, a major who was awarded $600 per year.

The 1832 cohort of pensioners, Wickersty said, allows "the story of the American Revolution to reach beyond the places where it was fought, and shows just how mobile the Revolutionary generation was as the United States expanded westward."

'Paperwork done in their own words'

Isaacs said veterans without discharge papers – whether they were lost or never existed – provide the most detail. "It's a lot, and it's paperwork done in their own words. They'll drop names, talk about seeing General Washington or Lafayette, talk about what they saw."

Isaac Quigley was in Burlington County, New Jersey, in 1778 when he served. But by the time he applied for a pension in the 1840s, he lived in Michigan. Some veterans moved as far west as Missouri and Mississippi.

Later amendments to the law expanded widows' eligibility, too, so applications continued: One widow, Sarah Shephard, was still due money when she died in 1863. Four years later her son Ezekiel, an officer in the Union regiment in West Virginia, hired a lawyer to claim the money, and his lawyer had to show that neither Ezekiel nor his mother had supported the Confederacy.

Sarah Martin, living on the front lines in Middlesex County, New Jersey, while her husband served, wrote about British soldiers bursting into her home, threatening to shoot her and her young son if she didn't feed them. She wrote about having her house plundered by British troops multiple times during the war.

"This was life for her, living in terror for the knock on the door," Wickersty said. "Is it going to be her husband coming home, or someone threatening to burn her house down and kill her children?"

Some widows, Sullivan said, weren't sure of their exact wedding dates or didn't have access to their church's records, because they'd moved away or their clergyman died, among other reasons. So they'd tear out pages from their family Bibles, often the only written record many families kept of their lineage, and include it with their application.

Wickersty transcribed one veteran's record that highlighted a little-known bit of history from one of the United States' most famous historical sites: Samuel Waples  was captured during the Battle of Germantown and held prisoner in a long room on the second floor of Independence Hall – then the Pennsylvania Statehouse, site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence – during the 1777 British occupation of Philadelphia . (He didn't remain there long, escaping soon after his capture.)

Those are just some of the stories they're uncovering, and they hope more volunteer transcribers and citizen archivists discover more of these types of narratives, the ones not always heard from generals or historians.

"It’s a really cool thing to have people be part of," Wickersty said. "How often can you say you worked on something that’s part of National Archives?"
