Learn more about Bulgaria

Best time to visit bulgaria.

Bulgaria follows the classic seasonal pattern that belongs to this corner of Europe.

Expect chilly conditions in winter and a delightfully warm (and very busy) summer.

As with many of its neighbors, spring is a fantastic time to really explore Bulgaria, as the going is relatively easy throughout the whole country.

Geography and Environment

Sitting almost at the crossroads between   Europe   and   Asia , Bulgaria entertains visitors with a little bit of everything when it comes to landscape.

Dramatic rivers and gorges, dense wooded areas, the lofty peaks of the Balkan Mountains, and some of the most beautiful Black Sea coastline the region has to offer.

Top 5 famous Bulgarians

1. vasil levski.

A revolutionary who would be remembered as the Apostle of Liberty, Levski became a national hero after leading the battle for liberation from Ottoman rule in the early 1870s.

2. Georgi Ivanov

The first Bulgarian cosmonaut in 1979, Ivanov was awarded the title 'Hero of the Soviet Union'. However, he had to change his original surname, Kakalov, because it occasionally had negative connotations in Russian.

A famous Bulgarian pop/funk band from the late 70s and early 80s. As with most acts who were prominent during this era, FSB appear to have always worn their pants far too tight, but their songs did become the iconic sounds of a generation.

4. Peyo Yavorov

This romantic poet and revolutionary was viewed by many as the finest poet in Bulgarian history. The majority of his works were about his two great loves: the first of whom died from tuberculosis, the second, took her own life, which ultimately drove Yavorov to do the same.

5. Stanislav Ianevski

Ianevski was catapulted into the international spotlight after playing Viktor Krum in the 2005 instalment of the Harry Potter series, The Goblet of Fire. While he does little talking in the film, Ianevski does some impressive broom-flying and walking around looking gruff.

Tours to Bulgaria

The essence of bulgaria.

From the wild forest lairs of wolves and bears to the golden domes of ornate churches; from Black Sea shores and ski resorts to rural simplicity in riverside villages; and from medieval lanes to Roman remains, Bulgaria intrigues and entertains.

Why choose a tour in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is a beautiful country, its haunting landscapes wrapped around historic landmarks from mountain monasteries to time-warp hamlets, ancient ruins, and frescoed churches; its culture on show in stylish cities mixing medieval with modernity.

In Sofia , parks, avenues, and romantic river bridges complement the multi-domed confection of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the capital’s oldest monument, St. George’s Rotunda, was built as Roman baths before becoming a Byzantine church.

One of the oldest cities on earth, Plovdiv dips its toes in the Maritsa River, and leans back against the Sredna Gora slopes. Neolithic relics, a Roman theatre, and the centuries-old Bachkovo Monastery are testament to its past, while its spirit is firmly in the present.

The country’s 13 th century capital, Veliko Tarnovo is crowned by a medieval citadel, sprinkled with orthodox churches, and brimming with character in its Old Town, dubbed ‘Bulgaria’s Most Beautiful’.

Basking amid the lakes and pine woods of Pirin National Park, Bansko presents a dual personality as a characterful Byzantine town and a vibrant hub of outdoor activities.

In ancient Thrace, Stara Zagora exhibits 9,000 years of history, from a two-storey Neolithic house to the fine mosaics of the Roman Villa.

And the Black Sea shore hems the smart city of Burgas, with its pier, promenades, and fountain square; and laps against the scenic peninsula of UNESCO listed Nessebar, where cobbled streets lead to colourful murals in the 11 th -century St. Stephen’s church.

On a tour of the Balkans , Jules Verne teams Bulgaria with Serbia to visit Belgrade, the Baroque town on Sremski Karlovci, and the Roman ruins of Viminacium; and with Romania’s highlights from Bucharest to Baile Herculane, the riverside carving of Decebal’s Face, and the sculptures of Târgu Jiu. Bulgaria also features on our fabulous Danube cruise from Bucharest to Budapest.

When to go on Bulgaria holidays

With variations between the regions and altitudes, in general Bulgaria has a continental climate of cold, snowy winters, and hot summers hovering between 30 and 40°, with milder, more temperate weather along the Black Sea coast. The spring and autumn shoulder months are perhaps the most comfortable for touring, averaging 26°.

Jules Verne journeys are timed for the seasons best suited to the destinations of each tour.

Who are Bulgaria tours suited to?

There are medieval monuments and archaeological sites to keep historians keen, frescoes, mosaics and murals to enthral art-lovers, traditions and culture on show in ‘living-museums’, and stunning scenery lining the route from one to another, so a tour in Bulgaria will meet the varied interests of travellers on our small-group tours.

Why book Bulgaria tours with Jules Verne?

With 45 years’ experience and a passion for creating extraordinary adventures, Jules Verne takes you to iconic landmarks and lesser-known sites, with expert tour guides who share their local knowledge, and show you hidden gems. Special experiences on our journeys in Bulgaria include lunch with a local family in Gorno Draglishte, a scenic trip via tunnels and viaducts on the narrow-gauge Rhodope Railway, and a visit to Arbanassi village, now an open-air ‘museum reserve’.

Our guided tours to Bulgaria are ABTA and ATOL protected, and we offer a 100% price guarantee, so you can book with complete confidence.

Trace the echoes of bohemian times lingering in the French-inspired architecture and ancient churches that grace the cityscape. Today’s exploration promises a feast for the senses as you traverse iconic landmarks, including the majestic  Arch of Triumph , the historical  Revolution Square , and the regal former  Royal Palace .

Prepare to be enthralled by guided tours of architectural marvels—the monumental  Parliament Palace  and the immersive  Village Museum – embodying the rich tapestry of Romania’s past. After lunch, join your guide for a leisurely stroll through the enchanting  old town area . Here, history comes alive amidst the cobblestone streets, where the iconic  Manuc’s Inn  and the  Princely Court  are silent witnesses to the city’s storied past.

Today, continue your journey into the untamed beauty of Transylvania, a land of mystical depths and captivating tales waiting to be unraveled. Along the way, pause at the awe-inspiring  Curtea de Arges   monastery , a masterpiece of architectural splendor adorned with trompe l’oeil cupolas, a soaring façade, and an interior that rivals its external beauty. Constructed in the early 1500s, this Romanian Orthodox cathedral is a marvel of craftsmanship and a repository of legends—stories of attempted human flight, deadly ultimatums, and the haunting tragedy of a lost love.

Continue your expedition with a photo stop at the breathtaking ruins of  Poienari Castle , a fortress that once served as the formidable home of Vlad the Impaler. As you stand before this nearly inaccessible citadel perched on an impossibly high cliff face, feel the weight of history. Vlad’s ruthless methods, employing slave labor and the arrest of aristocrats as traitors, unfold in the ruins. The castle, shrouded in perilous location and unmerciful circumstances, tells a story of lives deemed utterly dispensable and a construction that claimed more than it revealed.

In the afternoon, arrive in the exquisite city of  Sibiu , where history comes alive in the cobblestone streets and medieval charm. Your hotel awaits, a sanctuary for the weary traveler. Let the adventure continue with a guided walking tour through the medieval Old Town, the most protected and secure of all Saxon settlements. Sibiu, once a bustling center for trade, wears the scars of battles and stands encircled by a complex bastions and walls system—a living testament to a city that weathered storms and emerged with tales etched in its very stones.

Overnight in Sibiu,  Hotel Continental Forum****  (located in the Old Town)

Travel to the majestic church fortress of  Biertan , an ethereal sanctuary nestled in the Transylvanian landscape and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture the soaring walls and nine gate towers, a testament to the villagers’ ingenuity in building a stronghold that allowed them to defy frequent Ottoman attacks without brandishing weapons. Biertan is a living testament to resilience and community spirit, inviting you to unravel its secrets.

Your quest continues to the captivating citadel of  Sighisoara , where the medieval Old Town whispers tales of a bygone era—a UNESCO World Heritage Site that unfolds before you. Let your guide lead you through cobblestone streets, ascending the  13th-century Clock Tower  and the ancient covered staircase to the  Hill’s Gothic Church . Sighisoara, the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, carries a mystique that enchants every corner, including the house where he was born, now transformed into one of the town’s charming restaurants.

The afternoon unveils the enchanting village of  Viscri , a hidden gem in rural Transylvania that captured the heart of Charles III, King of the United Kingdom. Discover the 18th-century house he purchased, echoing his passionate commitment to preserving Transylvanian culture and vast forested landscapes. As you arrive, the  Viscri fortified church , another UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a sentinel to history. Join your guide for a stroll through the village, where time seems to stand still.

Overnight in Viscri,  Viscri 125 B&B****  (home-cooked dinner included)

Morning brings the  discovery in Viscri , where every corner holds the secrets of a bygone era. Before bidding farewell to this charming Transylvanian village, indulge your curiosity at the  local blacksmith’s workshop . Immerse yourself in the ancient artistry, learning about the age-old trade that has shaped the community and fueled its spirit.

As the day unfolds, set your sights on the legendary  Bran Castle  (a.k.a. Dracula’s Castle), which needs no introduction. The very mention of its name evokes mystery and intrigue, and now it awaits your exploration. Behold its fairy-tale architecture that is a testament to centuries of tales and legends. The castle’s rich history will leave you breathless; once the abode of kings, warlords, and the noble Queen Maria, it witnessed the pages of history turning with each passing era. The echoes of Princess Ileana’s presence linger, her story intertwined with the castle’s fate—exiled by the Communists in a tumultuous chapter of its past. Bran Castle, with its exquisite allure, bore witness to abandonment, occupation by foresters, and the resilience that comes with undetermined ownership.

As the sun begins its descent, the enchanting city of  Brasov  beckons, a place where history and leisure converge. Your afternoon is yours to savor, to explore at your own pace. Picture yourself wandering through cobbled streets, discovering hidden gems, or perhaps finding a quaint café to absorb the city’s vibrant energy.

Overnight in Brasov,  Hotel Bella Muzica***  (located in the Old Town)

Embark on a morning of enchantment in  Brasov , where every step is a journey through time. Follow your guide on a  captivating walk  through the Old Town, embraced by seven-foot-thick Saxon walls that echo with the whispers of centuries. Picture yourself surrounded by the towering elegance of the  Black Church , a silent sentinel to history, and the Old Town square, where red-roofed houses stand as a testament to the elite of bygone eras.

As Brasov bids you farewell, prepare for a breathtaking journey through mountain vistas. Your destination is  Peles Castle , Romania’s 19th-century jewel and the residence of its first king. No expense was spared in crafting an interior that will leave you breathless—mirrors, crystal, and exotic wood merging in a symphony of opulence.

Pause nearby to behold the ethereal  Sinaia Monastery , a captivating sight that bestowed its name upon the town. The journey continues to  Snagov Monastery , a sacred haven perched on a stunning islet in Lake Snagov. Here, legend intertwines with reality, as many believe this to be the final resting place of Dracula himself.

ACCOMMODATION USED ON THIS TOUR

Hotel sveta sofia, sofia.

The 68-room Hotel Sveta Sofia is found on one of Sofia’s main high streets, a five-minute walk from the Serdika metro station and perfectly located for exploring the city’s shops, restaurants and landmark buildings. Despite its location, in the heart of the bustling city, the rooms and apartments are very spacious with carpeted floors and lively, hotel décor. You’ll find standard furniture, amenities and mod-cons. There is a small, on-site fitness centre free for guest use, and a sauna available for use at a surcharge. Guests may have complimentary, one-time access to a city spa and pool, please ask the reception for more information. There is also an indoor restaurant, where breakfast is served.

Tihiyat Kut, Apriltsi

Tihiyat Kut is a lovely, comfortable guesthouse set within some beautiful gardens. Rooms are simply decorated but provide adequate comfort and amenities, all with en suite bathrooms. There is a good on site restaurant serving local dishes, and a great outdoor pool for a refreshing dip at the end of a long day adventuring in the nearby Central Balkan Mountain range.

Hotel Izvora, Veliko Turnovo

Located in the centre of Arbanassi, a village around 15 minutes out of Veliko Tarnovo, the hotel is a quaint option with plenty of local personality. The Izvora has 23 double rooms, a single, two studios and four apartments, making it a mid-size hotel with a range of facilities. The complex consists of architecture typical of the region, one summer and two winter gardens, an outdoor pool and lounging area, and a “mini zoo”. For a bit of pampering guests also have use of a sauna, steam bath and infrared cabins. A draw for locals is the tavern that was awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in 2003 and serves regional cuisine both inside and outside, as well as occasional entertainment, and lots of local character. The ensuite rooms are smart and nicely furnished with a classic style.

Alafrangite Hotel, Plovdiv

Designed like an old Plovdiv townhouse, Alafrangite houses just 11 rooms and two junior suite studios. Rooms are described as being modelled after a revival house, although this is mostly evident from the elegant colour scheme and period-style paintings on the wall. Otherwise, the accommodation is clean, generally offers a good amount of space and decorated with a simple elegance found throughout the property. The peaceful, stone garden terrace is filled with aromas of geranium and its café is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Guests can also enjoy a drink from the lobby bar out on the terrace. The restaurant, a well-known establishment in town serving local dishes in the building next door, offers the best example of a bygone era, with its carved wooden ceilings and wall murals.

Arkan Han Hotel, Trigrad

The traditional wood and stone structure, set in an isolated spot at the base of a mountain and encircled by forests, is truly picturesque. Arkan Han is family-owned and consists of five apartments, three studios, six double rooms and a single. Rooms are somewhat simpler than the rest of the property, but a clear country theme runs throughout it, adding plenty of character. The cowboy atmosphere is enhanced by its location, next to the Arkan Horse Centre, which has ten horses (at the time of writing) and can be used for tours. Amenities within the rooms are limited (hairdryers and irons can be requested from reception) and there are no T.V.s, but this feels as if by design. The surrounding views are exquisite, and some rooms have balconies from which to enjoy them. With no neighbours around, the large gardens open up on to the surrounding forests and alpine mountains, where there are covered, outdoor dining and separate barbecue areas made of rustic stone to allow guests to spend time basking in the fresh mountain air and enjoying a simpler life. Home-made bread and dairy products are served at the restaurant providing further homely touches to a welcoming and relaxing stay. We recommend ordering a drink at the charming bar and enjoying it in an armchair by the open fireplace in the corner.

Leshten Hotel, Leshten

One of the few hotel options in the small village of Leshten, the beautiful building occupies a privileged spot on the edge of the mountainous village, overlooking stunning views of the city below enclosed by snow-capped mountain ranges within eyeline. Inside the building, the architecture continues to excite with carved wooden beams and ceilings, and exposed stone walls around you whilst you enjoy a meal of home-made dishes using fresh local produce from the a-la-carte restaurant. Rooms have a sleeker finish with the typical wood-panelling and are made cosy with natural colours and stylish furniture. The hotel’s extensive ‘Relax Zone’ includes an indoor pool with spectacular views from its floor-to-ceiling windows, a hot tub, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and an adventure shower, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool with open-air, panoramic views and sunbeds.

Casa Karina Hotel, Bansko

The hotel complex is located at the foot of Pirin Mountain, 150m from the start of the gondola lift, making it a great base for skiers, which the hotel is designed to cater to. Room categories include double rooms, studios and apartments. Accommodation at the hotel is spacious, featuring a simple, elegant design of neutral colours, modern bathrooms, and standard hotel conveniences such as Wi-Fi, a dressing table, a wardrobe and toiletries. The on-site restaurant serves local cuisine, as well as international dishes, and the lobby bar is popular for after-skiing drinks. They would be remiss not to have spa services, given the location, and Casa Karina doesn’t disappoint: as well as offering a menu of treatments, guests can make use of the good-sized, heated indoor pool set with elegant French windows, looking out to the Pirin Mountains and beautiful landscaped courtyard. Additional facilities include a barbecue and entertainment equipment for guests’ use such as billiards, electronic games and a petanque court.

Gorski Kut Hotel, Rila Mountains

Less than a ten-minute drive from the monastery, the Gorski Kut Hotel is a family-run guesthouse occupying a peaceful location surrounded by pristine forest and a flowing river in the Rila Valley. Rooms are built to a modern standard with air-conditioning and heating. They come with simple, classic, wood furniture; pleasant, patterned or floral curtains and bedding; and a private balcony enjoying mountain views, all adding to the tranquillity of the stay. Local food is served at the restaurant, particularly fish given its proximity to a fish farm, which boasts a large, covered summer terrace right above the river.

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Key Information

Bulgaria’s climate can be extreme with scorching summers and intensely cold winters. It is also a predominantly mountainous country with a maximum altitude of 2,925m (Mt Musala in the Rila Mountains) and an average altitude of 470m. As such, the weather can be very changeable and you will need to be prepared for all conditions. We have scheduled our walking trips to Bulgaria for the summer and early autumn when daytime temperatures should be warm in the mountains (20-25C) and trails should be clear of snow but rain and cold are always a possibility.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

This is the perfect tour for those who enjoy fresh air, mountain hikes, great food and mixing with welcoming locals at every turn. While all the walks can be opted out of (and luggage will be transported throughout by minibus) they form a key part of the trip and you should be fit enough to enjoy several days of moderate to strenuous walking (4-6hrs/day on average).

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip.

On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

Here you can discover more about Bulgaria’s complex history, visit the Archaeological Museum and see some incredible artefacts dating back to 400 BC, and relax in one of the cities’s vast parks. Plovdiv, the European Capital of Culture for 2019, is also Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city and there is no shortage of historical sites to explore. Experience and knowledge shows that they are plenty of places in the world still to be explored by the curious. Touring Bulgaria

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Buses are usually the most efficient way of getting between major towns and cities. Trains link most sizeable towns and cities, though if travelling by train, be sure to take an ekspressen (express) or bârz (fast) train, as the pâtnicheski (slow passenger) trains can take a very long time to cover the length of their journeys. Taxis are available in most cities and towns, although rates can vary.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography environment and weather

Bulgaria is situated in the south-east of Europe, and covers 110,879 square kilometres. The geography of Bulgaria is diverse, featuring mountain ranges, river valleys, open plains, and dense forests. Mountains and hills characterise the west and centre of the country, though the terrain flattens out towards the Black Sea to the east and the Danubian Plain to the north.

Bulgaria has a continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. Depending on the time of year you intend to travel, check the weather reports and prepare accordingly.

World Heritage sites

Bulgaria has 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can view the official list of the sites here (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/bg). A few notable heritage sites include:

Boyana Church, a medieval church containing stunning religious frescoes and medieval paintings Srebarna Nature Reserve, a freshwater lake extending over 600 hectares with nearly 100 different species of birds Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari, which showcases the striking architectural decor and styles of the former Thracian peoples who inhabited the region.

Eating and Drinking

Meat and dairy are central to Bulgarian cuisine. Many dishes are served with a side of kiselo mlyako (yoghurt), while cheese is a commonly used ingredient in Bulgarian dishes, including Gyuvech (beef stew), shopska salad and banista pastries. Meat-based dishes include kebache (grilled mince meat), lukanka (Bulgarian salami) and meshana skara (mixed grill). Bulgaria is home to many unique beverages, including boza (a fermented beverage made of wheat, rye or millet), rakia (fruit brandy), aryan (a yoghurt based drink) and menta (spearmint oil-based liquor).

Health and safety

Generally speaking, Bulgaria is safe to travel around in, though always exercise common sense when travelling. Be advised however that pickpocketing and purse snatching is common, so pay attention to your personal security.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. Bulgaria’s electricity supply runs at 230V and 50Hz. Bulgaria uses both the Type C and Type F electric plugs, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

I was impressed by the number of places we visited. It was a very full itinerary which I like. We saw things of interest every day. I see no fault with the tour.

We felt safe in Turkey and found the people friendly and helpful. Prices were excellent and the food almost universally magnificent. There is so much to see in the natural and built environment and the wonderful archaeological sites. It is sad to see the ordinary people and businesses suffering from the lack of tourists. Mary B. Iceland cultural and wilderness small group tour

It is hard to believe that such a small country can contain so much dramatic scenery. Icecaps and glaciers, huge waterfalls, volcanos and hot bubbling mud, and those wonderful fjords and high mountain passes

Our guide Filiz was wonderful, very well informed, historical insights very helpful, her care for our well being exceptional. Could not have wished for a better tour leader.

The geographical wonders offered by Iceland and Greenland left me in awe. The grandeur and spectacle of the countryside is breathtaking. Our leader (Rob) was excellent: well-researched, friendly, organized and good-humoured.

The country was apparently calm and safe. People were friendly and helpful. Such a pity there has been such a down turn in tourism. Ros & Tony S. Sep '17

Our guide was a great ambassador for his country, wide knowledge of literature, history, customs, industry, fishing - also a perceptive and sensitive person who inter-acted so willingly with all of us!

What time zone is Bulgaria in?

Bulgaria has a single time zone, Eastern European Time (UTC+2). Daylight savings commences on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October.

Is tipping customary in Bulgaria?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping has become increasingly widespread in tourist areas, with a tip of between 5 and 10% common for taxi drivers, tour guides, and hotel and restaurant staff.

What is the internet access like in Bulgaria?

Wifi should be availabe in most hotels, cafes and restaurants when travelling in Bulgaria.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Bulgaria?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Bulgaria. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Bulgaria

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of leva in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

If these walls could talk, the stories they would tell…  The Athénée Palace sits in the center of Bucharest and is well known as the former haunt for more spies, diplomats, politicians, journalists, and hangers-on than any hotel in Europe.  The building dates back to 1914, was rebuilt and restyled with an Art Deco motif in the mid-1930s, and claims “as central a place in a country’s history, perhaps, as any hotel in the world,” according to travel writer Dan Halpern.  Before World War II, the Athénée Palace offered travelers from both the Axis and Allied powers a front row seat to the approaching conflict, whereas during the Cold War, the Romanian government tapped phones, bugged rooms, and staffed the hotel with informants in order to quash any nascent uprisings.

Today, the hotel still bears all the culture and heritage of its heyday, with none of the surveillance devices.  Hotel amenities include two restaurants, a bar, café, outdoor terrace, heated indoor swimming pool, fitness center, hot tub, Jacuzzi, wet and dry sauna, steam room, massage lounge, laundry and dry-cleaning services (for a fee), and complimentary Wi-Fi internet access.  Air-conditioned guest rooms have private marble bath with hair dryer, hand-finished oak floors, tea- and coffee-making facilities, TV, and phone.

The first brick in the building that is now the Hotel Sighisoara was laid over five hundred years ago, in 1520.  Since then, the hotel has served as a private home, a bishop’s residence, and the Sighișoara city hall, among other uses.  It sits in the center of the city’s ancient citadel, and includes a restaurant, medieval wine cellar, spa with sauna and massage treatments, laundry and dry-cleaning services (for a fee), and complimentary Wi-Fi internet access.  Each of the hotel’s 32 rooms is uniquely decorated and has private bath with hair dryer, minibar, TV, and phone.  Please note that due to the historic nature of this hotel, there is no elevator.

What people love about bulgaria and romania tours.

I would have wanted the Rila Monastery included in the itinerary. Our tour leader, Vlad, was everything (and more) that one can ask for in a guide. It was evident that he was well-read about the history of the places we saw. He even included images to show in his talks. On a personal note, he made every effort to address each group member's questions and concerns in a friendly yet professional manner and go out of the way, if necessary, to attend to them. The local guides, Peter and Ibrahim, were likewise very knowledgeable in their particular areas.
The itinerary was excellent to travel through Bulgaria. We enjoyed the local guides as our tour leader was not a guide, just a leader and not a Bulgarian local. It was the first Intrepid Tour that my husband and I had taken. We would prefer a better standard of hotels as it is not a budget tour. Being a group of only 9 made it easy to get around.
