5 of the Best Brooklyn Brewery & Beer Tours
The craft beer revolution is alive and well, particularly in the capital of cool that is Brooklyn, New York. Beer tours are therefore extremely popular in this part of the Big Apple. With well over a dozen breweries ranging from small-batch microbreweries to globally recognized producers like Brooklyn Brewery, this is a great place to take a brewery tour. Williamsburg is naturally the focal point for most tours given its proximity to Manhattan, but there are plenty of other great options sprinkled around the borough.
Brooklyn beer tours are increasingly common and often incorporate other city sights or gastronomic pleasures into the itinerary. However, choosing the right one for you from the broad array out there can be time consuming and research intensive, which is why we have compiled this handy list of our favorite five Brooklyn brewery and beer tours for you. These have been selected after considering important aspects of any tour including the value for money, itinerary, previous guest reviews and, of course in this case, amount of free beer thrown into the mix!

This Local Brewery Tour Service Does All the Planning for You
With such a lively local craft beer scene, perhaps the only surprising thing about City Brew Tours coming to Brooklyn is that it’s only just happened.
The company has been offering local brewery tours via passenger van in a number of East coast cities including Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., and its origin, Burlington, VT, for the last ten years. As of this month, New York has joined the lineup . While the company has their sights set on other boroughs, for the time being, the tours are focused exclusively on Brooklyn.
While the draw of a designated driver might be stronger for drinking tours in cities with less public transit, it’s certainly a more relaxing way to traverse the borough. The tour also comes with the perk of an expert tour guide sharing facts about the history of brewing in New York and the world at large, while taking guests behind the scenes of three Brooklyn beer spots per trip. Currently the company has partnered with Five Boroughs Brewing , Interboro Spirits & Ales , Circa Brewing Co. , Wartega Brewing Co. , Strong Rope Brewery , and Brooklyn Brewery , as well as Kings Beer Hall for the chance to sample beers from a number local breweries at once. Partnerships with other breweries are in talks, as well, but the current selections were chosen for their group-friendly spaces and tourable brewings areas, and in some cases, their food offerings as well.
City Brew Tours’ offerings are a great way for visitors to get acquainted with Brooklyn’s beer scene, but even local beer geeks (aspiring or expert) can appreciate the lessons on how beer’s made, not to mention the chance to sample up to 15 different brews. The $115 ticket price includes a lesson on beer-and-food pairing as well, complete with lunch or dinner, depending on whether it’s a daytime or evening tour.
With so many breweries in Brooklyn’s beer scene, City Brew Tours’ three-stop trips are essentially an introduction and a fun way to learn while visiting breweries in neighborhoods one might not normally trek to. But visitors are likely to find that three stops in four hours is a perfect cap—for drinking and learning. The other reason for CBT’s total brewery partner listing being relatively conservative at the moment comes from the company’s desire to offer genuine expertise and an in-depth, well-thought-out experience.
“We want to be considered the beer experts in every city we work in,” Isaac Bell, VP of Business Development (and tour guide) says. “We want to have a relationship with the breweries.”

Brooklyn Brewery
Brooklyn Brewery is the burrough’s oldest still-operating brewery, having first opened as a contract brewery in 1988 before settling into an old Brooklyn matzo factory in 1996. It is now one of the country’ most established craft beer brands, with beers like Brooklyn Lager and Brooklyn Brown Ale becoming some of the first craft beers known to many Americans.
A Frenchie's Guide to Brooklyn: Where to Eat, Drink, and Play
While you may not be able to hop the next flight to Paris, experiencing the best of French culture could be as short as a train ride away. Over the last few years, Brooklyn has become a Francophile haven, thanks to the copious amounts of French-inspired restaurants, wine bars, and snack spots that are spread across its bustling neighborhoods. Best of all, the French influence goes far beyond gastronomy. French language lessons, pétanque meet-ups, and even French-inspired live music are all regularly accessible across Kings County. For New Yorkers looking to find a sense of joie de vivre close to home, check out our official Frenchie’s Guide to Brooklyn on where to eat, drink, and play à la française.
Where to Eat
Café paulette .
Tucked alongside the southern edge of Fort Greene park sits Café Paulette, the ideal spot for recreating your best Parisian bistro moments close to home. This little-known hidden gem offers classic French favorites (think tartare de boeuf, paté de campagne, and duck a l’orange) served alongside a curated selection of organic wines. Weekend brunch selections include oeufs benedicte, toast d’avocat, and of course, signature melty croque monsieurs. Grab your spot on one of the resto’s gorgeous red leather banquettes before this secret spot gets out!

Pates et Traditions
Located on a rather quiet corner of Havemeyer Street, Pates et Traditions is hands-down the best place in the city for authentic French galettes and crepes, served up in both sweet and savory formats. Top picks include La Bergere (goat cheese, figs, honey, & rosemary), La Savoyarde (potatoes, bacon, Camembert, white wine, Swiss cheese & onions), and of course, La Parisienne (classic recipe of ham, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, & egg). Be sure to save room for a sticky sweet dessert crepe (our favorites include la banane nutella or le bisou sucré). Grab a seat outside on warm weather days for ideal people watching and an instant terrasse feel.
La Cigogne
Looking for a less bistro-inspired ambiance? Then La Cigogne is just for you. This Carroll Gardens based Alsatian eatery is known for its signature regional staples, as well as an extensive selection of Alsatian beer and French wine. A specially curated kids menu is also available, making it the perfect place for family night out. Spaetzle or tarte flambée, anyone?

Where to Drink
Bar tabac .
This Parisian-style neighborhood bistro is located in Brooklyn’s Cobble Hill neighborhood and has been beloved by its residents for years. Known for late-night menus, epic weekend brunches, and summertime pétanque outdoors, there’s truly no better resto to live out your French-inspired dreams in the heart of New York City. Come for the snails, stay for the lively ambiance, and stumble out much later than expected. (Note: Bar Tabac is cash only.)
Bacchus
Located just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, this back-garden French bistro serves up hundreds of regional wine selections, both by-the-glass and in bottle format. Founded by Bordeaux native Bruno Laclide, the bar’s unpretentious staff and well-curated menu (duck confit or moules frites, anyone?) create the perfect laid-back ambiance for sipping and snacking. Best of all, Bacchus is also home to a substantial large-format bottle collection (magnums, jeroboams, and more), perfect for sharing amongst large groups of friends.

Juliette
Complete with an indoor ‘garden-room,’ roof deck, and extensive custom cocktail list, Juliette provides the perfect backdrop for soaking in all of New York City’s skyline magic. Post up beneath the stars and enjoy a night out from above on the bar’s magical rooftop terrasse, or simply snag a seat inside and enjoy a proper French-inspired meal. Happy Hour goes all night (5PM-close) from Monday through Thursday, perfect for long evenings spent catching up with friends over a bottle of delicious French wine.
French Wine ‘A Emporter’ (To Go)
Looking to stock up on a versatile stash of French wine to keep at home? Stop by these top Brooklyn wine shops loaded with ample French selections and unbelievable customer service: Slope Cellars (Park Slope), Thirst Wine Merchants (Fort Greene), Uva Wines (Williamsburg), Irving Bottle (Bushwick), Dandelion Wine Shop (Greenpoint), Leon & Son (Clinton Hill), Vanderbilt Wine Merchants (Prospect Heights).
What to Do
Live music at chez oskar .
Forget the food (OK, not entirely)-- at this Fort Greene based French bistro, it’s all about the live music. Head to Chez Oskar every Monday night from 8PM-11PM for a weekly dose of singing, drinking, and dancing. Prefer your food without a side of music? Chez Oskar hosts ‘All You Can Eat Mussels’ every Tuesday, as well as ‘Wine Lover’s Wednesday’ festivities the following day. At this self-proclaimed ‘le funky French bistro de Brooklyn,’ the party never stops.
Hit Prospect Park for Pique-Niques & Pétanque (Parade Grounds)
Prospect Park provides the perfect ambiance for creating a French-inspired day outdoors. Start the day by laying out a blanket and unpacking a homemade lunch for a picnic beneath the sun. Be sure to bring all of your French picnic staples: charcuterie, fromage, briny olives, and of course, a pillowy soft baguette to soak it all up. Post-lunch, head to the Parade Grounds and strike up a game of Pétanque at one of the park’s courts (B.Y.O.Boules). For serious players looking to get more involved in Brooklyn’s Pétanque community, check out the New York Pétanque Club, here .
Expand Your French Language Skills
Whether starting from scratch, brushing up on your college knowledge, or simply looking to practice conversationally, there’s no better place than Brooklyn to re-ignite your French language skills. With numerous education centers around the borough, learning to parler francais has never been easier. Check out French Class NYC , Learn French Brooklyn , or Coucou French Classes for furher details.
Where to Stay
The Wythe Hotel
Waterfront Williamsburg and walking-distance from a slew of amazing bars? Count us in. It’s no surprise that Frenches lose their minds over The Wythe Hotel . Throw in an epic rooftop bar (Lemon’s ), a breathtaking skyline view, and downright unforgettable hospitality, and you’ve got yourself a key to Brooklyn’s best place to stay. The icing on the cake? The neighborhood’s newly opened restaurant Le Crocodile (founded by Aidan O’Neal and Jake Lieber of Chez Ma Tante ) resides within the hotel’s walls, making sipping, snacking, and strolling back to your room more convenient than ever. On est bien ici!

Top Rated NYC Tour With More Than 10,000 Served!
Great beer, fun beer knowledge, awesome people. Seth is one of the best tour guides. The Saison at Spuyten Duyvel was a favorite. Also really liked Singlecut. I'm not normally a fan of IPA's, but theirs was really good!
We had the best time with Seth as our tour guide! So many cool spots and amazing beers. Definitely add this to your NYC visit!!!
Visited McSorley's, Brooklyn Brewery (where we had great BBQ delivered) and ended at Fifth Hammer. It was a very diverse group ranging from non-beer drinkers to craft beer aficionados and there was something for everyone. Highly recommended !!
Seth was incredibly knowledgeable, not only about the beers, but about the history of NYC in general and it was an awesome learning experience! I highly recommend this tour if you are looking to see the city and enjoy some amazing beers!! Cheers and thank you Seth!
This is our second time and would recommend it to anyone if they are looking for a fun day and some beer. Nick was so informative and made it an awesome day. He also suggested place to go once the tour was over. He was very personable with everyone. YOU NEED TO GO ON THE TOUR!!!
Great tour lots of good info, beer, and fun-guided. Great way to see the city in an air conditioned coach and visit places you wouldn’t ordinarily see. Had a blast! Perfect for friends or family, locals, or tourists.

My wife and I were visiting from out of town and looking for something fun to do and we lucked out as we came across City Brew Tours who just happened to start running tours in NY that weekend.
We went on an awesome brew tour and visited 3 great breweries including Five Boroughs, Circa, and Interboro all located in Brooklyn. It was cool way to experience the flavor of the area. Each spot was unique but we tasted awesome beers at each location.
The tour also included some great Pizza at Circa. We were led by a beer guide who was very funny and kept us entertained throughout, but was also an expert who educated us about the brewing process which was really interesting.
Overall, the all inclusive experience was a tremendous value and well worth the cost. I can't wait to do it again when we get back in NY or one of the other cities in which they operate!
This tour was awesome! A great value for the amount of beer and it included a great selection of different breweries. I particularly loved 5 boroughs and Circa. The pizza was amazing at Circa! This was a really great way to see the different neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Our guide was super funny, like a comedian! I need tour guides to be entertaining and he certainly was. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Do it!
What a fun night we had!!! The 4 of us in the past 2 1/2 weeks traveled from ports in Spain, Portugal and Canada prior to spending time in NYC. Our husbands were very disappointed in their quest to find “good beer.” Well, we finally found it! Isaac and Tim chose 3 excellent breweries in Brooklyn for us to tour and taste the beer. The whole evening was great and the beer we tasted was excellent. We would love to take this tour again on our next visit to NYC.
This tour was amazing. Our tour guide, Isaac, was extremely knowledgeable and in the breweries we went to and in the process of brewing beer. The tour was extremely easy and convenient. We were picked up and dropped off at the same location. We went to three breweries (5 Borough, Circa, Interboro) and didn't feel rushed at any off them. Issac allowed for us to take our time to really enjoy the space, the people, and especially the beers at each of these amazing Brooklyn breweries.

The Brooklyn Brewery Tour You Need This Weekend
- October 10, 2020 November 4, 2021
It’s October which in our family means two things: Halloween and beer. While we love Halloween, we moslty leave that to the teens. My husband and I focus on the beer – well, for me it’s really more about the beer cheese! Fall is my favorite season and I use every excuse I can to be outside. One of our go-to weekend activities is exploring a neighborhood by bike which ends at a brewery. There are so many great spots to stop for a freshly made artisanal brew in Brooklyn. Here is a my self- guided Brooklyn brewery tour you need to take this fall.
Brooklyn Brewing: A Brief History
Breweries in Brooklyn have experienced fits and starts. In the early 1900’s Bushwick was known as the beer capital of the northeast with 11 breweries in a 12 block radius. Prohibition in the 1920’s damaged the industry enough to stop growth. While it resurged a bit after, the beer industry disappeared altogether in the 1970’s due to bad crops, high costs and taxes. In the late 80’s Brooklyn Brewery and Sixpoint were basically the only game in town. Until 2014. In 2014, there was a change in the law that allowed breweries to sell on premises… and the artisanal Brooklyn brewery scene was born.
Why a Brooklyn Brewery Tour?
It turns out a law change in 2014 combined with good NYC water, and innovative hipsters doing everything from filmmaking to beer making are a winning combination in Brooklyn. The borough now boasts more than 20 reputable breweries and has emerged as a craft beer haven. What better way to spend an autumn afternoon? Or a cold winter day? Or even a hot summer’s day?
Below I map out two recommended routes for what should be on your short list for a fall weekend activity – a Brooklyn brewery tour. They are all a few blocks from either the Union Street stop on N/R train (in Gowanus) or the Nassau Ave. stop on the G train (in Greenpoint). So pick your neighborhood, grab your Metro Card and get hopping! Don’t forget these tours should be done on foot or on public transportation – no drinking and driving (or biking)!
COVID Situation
During COVID, groups are always limited to fewer than 6 people and masks are, of course, required. All of the taprooms I have listed are open with limited outdoor seating EXCEPT for Other Half Brewing which is closed for seating but open for takeout. Stop in there anyway to pick up some cans to bring home for tomorrow. In addition, all of the breweries offer to-go sales of cans, crowlers and growlers. Finally, most of the breweries allow for walk in EXCEPT for Folksbier Brauerei, which requires advance reservations.
1. Brooklyn Brewery Tour in Gowanus (N/R train)
Just a few stops into Brooklyn on the N/R train gets you to Union St. and 4th Avenue and the heart of Gowanus. The latest haven for NYC’s creative community, Gowanus is brimming with converted warehouses, cool art galleries and trendy eateries. It is also home to the first of my recommended Brooklyn brewery tours. Each of the breweries listed below are walking distance from the Union St stop. In addition, if followed in the order listed, total walking time is only 40 minutes. The last stop of my Gowanus Brooklyn Brewery tour will leave you near the F/G train at Court Street.
Three’s Brewing
Start at the neighborhood darling of Three’s Brewing three blocks from the subway. I love this place for the beer hall feel and the big welcoming backyard. They have a long list of inventive brews with 20 taps that are heavy on the IPA’s. The food, provided by Meat Hook, is as popular as the beer. Wine and liquor are also available for the non beer drinkers – like me. 333 Douglass St.
Strong Rope Brewery
Just a short 4 block walk from Three’s lies the small but quaint brewery of Strong Rope. A NY state farm brewery, Strong Rope uses 100% NY State hops and malts. Customize a tasting flight of the rotating house beer. 574 President St.
Finback Brooklyn
A few doors down from Strong Rope, lies the newly opened Queens brewery Finback Brooklyn. It’s repurposed warehouse has an open area with lounge chairs, a big beer hall space, and a screened-off cocktail lounge. Their tasting room has 12 rotating taps and features can or bottle releases every few weeks. 545 President Street
Other Half Brewing
After three breweries, its time to walk off some of those hops. Follow the map for the 20 minute walk over the Gowanus canal to Other Half Brewing. A cult following for their IPA releases means legendary can releases that enthusiasts rush to have. If you happen to arrive for a release, be prepared to queue. Note that the taproom is closed during COVID but to-go is available. Use this opportunity on your tour to support small business and take a few cans home for a rainy day. 191 Center St .
Folksbier Brauerei
Just a 7 minute walk from Other Half lies the warm but minimalist space of Folksbier Brauerei. Folks love the clean old world European style brews made with modern techniques. I love it for the beer cheese. Note that during COVID they are taking 90 minute table reservations for parties smaller than 6 only. Reserve in advance on the website. 101 Luquer St.
2. Brooklyn Brewery Tour In Greenpoint (G Train)
If you chose to do your Brewery tour along the G train line, you will end up in the magical neighborhood of Greenpoint . My favorite thing about Greenpoint is how transported it feels from the hustle and bustle of the rest of NYC. It’s traditional Polish roots combined with burgeoning creativity makes for a perfect spot for my second Brooklyn brewery tour. Take the G train towards Queens to Nassau Ave. to start this tour. This tour requires a bit more walking than Tour #1 (about 1 hours) and also requires one midpoint train ride. You will begin at Nassau Ave on the G and end at the Graham Ave. stop on the L train.
Keg & Lantern
Stop #1 on the Greenpoint Brooklyn brewery tour is just steps from the Nassau Ave stop on the G line. Local sports bar turned brewery, Keg and Lantern has a cozy backyard with a great pub menu. Fill up on some excellent grub before spending the day drinking! In addition to a cozy bar and great food, they feature over a dozen house brews (heavy on the lagers) and additional guest taps. 97 Nassau Avenue.
Brooklyn Brewery
Walk 10 minutes east towards the water to get to our next stop at Brooklyn Brewery. A powerhouse of American beer production, Brooklyn Brewery ships their brews to more than 30 countries. These founding fathers of New York craft breweries have been in business in this spot since 1988. The cavernous beer hall has the traditional welcoming communal seating as well as a robust merch stand. Both the neighborhood and the brewery tend to be a tourist attraction. 79 N. 11th Street
Greenpoint Beer & Ale
The next stop on the Greenpoint Brewery tour is a worth the trek 25 minute walk down Manhattan Ave. On your way, enjoy the flavor of the old Polish roots of my new favorite neighborhood. Keep an eye out for the beacon of the famous green stained glass water tower newly planted at the point of Greenpoint . What better way to celebrate Oktoberfest than on this roof and underneath that water tower. There you will be treated with a 20 barrel system that makes this one of the largest breweries in BK. The 15 taps are pouring only Greenpoint brews and the giant squishy pretzels are to die for. After this stop, you will walk back up Manhattan Ave 7 blocks to India St. to take the G train to your next stop. 1150 Manhattan Ave.
Grimm Aritsanal Ales
The newest brewery on this Brooklyn brewery tour is technically in East Williamsburg. From Greenpoint Beer and Ale, hop back on the G train at Greenpoint Ave towards Church Ave and take it two stops to Metropolitan Ave. Walk west 10 minutes on Metropolitan to Grimm Artisanal Ales. For a little fun on the way, stop in to see my friend Franklin the pig at Crest Hardware . What started as a nomadic brewery, Grimm finally opened their doors in 2018. Their specialty is concise and elegant ales with a large selection of sour beers. I love it for the bright sun filled taproom. 990 Metropolitan Ave.
Honorable Mention Brooklyn Breweries
Prost to an enjoyable afternoon on one of my Brooklyn brewery tours! There are a few breweries worth mentioning that did not make the Brooklyn brewery tour list. While they are places I like, they are in neighborhoods that are either not close to a subway stop or not walking distance from other great breweries. If you are in the neighborhood, try one of these outstanding Brooklyn breweries.
Circa Brewing Co in downtown Brooklyn – The location is odd but the beer, wood fired pizza, and outdoor front space with heat lamps are a family favorite. 141 Lawrence St.
Transmitter Brewing in Brooklyn Navy Yard – I love any excuse to get to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This brewery focuses on traditional and farmhouse ales and serves them up in the outdoor beer garden in the heart of one of Brooklyn’s most creative spots. 141 Flushing Ave. Building 77
Randolph Beer in Dumbo – The rooftop of a building in DUMBO is exactly where I want to be on a sunny afternoon. Add to that, the do it yourself taps of Randolph beer and it’s a winning combination. 82 Prospect St.
Coney Island Brewery in Coney Island – You can’t have a conversation about breweries without including Coney Island Brewery. Originally part of Coney Islands Freakatorium, this brewery is a good fit in a neighborhood built on amusement. 1904 Surf Ave .

A first timer’s guide to Prince Edward Island
May 25, 2024 • 8 min read
Experience a colorful slice of island life on your first visit to Prince Edward Island © Peter Unger / Getty Images
Long sandy beaches backed with red cliffs. Freshly caught lobster, oysters and clams. Toe-tapping music at lively kitchen parties or local pubs. And plenty of outdoor adventures, from cycling to kayaking to hiking. In the Gulf of St Lawrence, on Canada’s eastern shores, Prince Edward Island (PEI) may be the country’s smallest province, but there’s plenty to see and do.
Besides its natural setting, PEI’s other claim to fame is a series of early 20th-century novels about a feisty red-haired girl. Lucy Maud Montgomery set the Anne of Green Gables books around her PEI hometown of Cavendish, and several island attractions can tell you more about the noted author and the beloved Canadian character she created.
You can visit Prince Edward Island as part of an Atlantic Canada road trip – the nearly 13km-long (8-mile) Confederation Bridge connects PEI to the mainland – or come for a peaceful beach escape. Bring your bathing suit and your appetite too. PEI’s nickname is “Canada’s food island.”
Here's all you need to know to plan your first trip to Prince Edward Island.
When should I go to Prince Edward Island?
PEI shines under the summer sun, its short peak season running from late June into September. The weather is typically warm, with temperatures hovering around 20–25ºC (70–80ºF), prime time for beach-going, hiking and picnicking. With cooler mornings and evenings, the weather stays temperate into October, as the leaves take on their autumn reds and golds. Fall brings food fests too, including the Fall Flavours Festival and the PEI International Shellfish Festival .
Many island businesses are seasonal, opening in May or June and closing in September or by the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October. Prices are typically somewhat lower in the shoulder months of May, June, September and October. Expect more rain and varied temperatures in both fall and spring, although you might have mild, sunny days too, which are good for hiking, bicycling and island exploring.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November, although the worst storms have previously hit the maritime provinces in the fall. Expect snow anytime between November and April, with fierce winter winds making the temperatures feel much colder than the average ranges of -11ºC to -3ºC (11–26ºF).
Planning a longer trip? These are the best times to visit Canada
How much time should I spend on Prince Edward Island?
If you have a long weekend, start in Charlottetown , exploring the province’s historic capital, and learn about its role as the “the birthplace of Confederation,” creating the union that would become the country of Canada. Have a drink overlooking the waterfront, then grab a bite from one of the vendors in Founders Food Hall . Your next stop is Cavendish on the island’s north shore, where several sights tell you about the Anne of Green Gables story. Then explore the beaches of Prince Edward Island National Park , perhaps taking a hike through the Greenwich dunes before dinner at Dalvay by the Sea , a historic summer home turned inn. The next day, go kayaking or cycling. Dig into a traditional lobster supper, ending your trip with music in a local pub.
To explore more of the island, plan a one-week road trip. After your time in Charlottetown, Cavendish and the national park, drive west for an Indigenous cultural experience on Lennox Island , a Mi’kmaq community. Circle the island’s west side, sampling the spuds at the Canadian Potato Museum , stopping for a lunchtime concert at the Stompin’ Tom Centre and spending the night in the West Point Lighthouse . Returning to Charlottetown, stop off in the village of Victoria by the Sea for a lobster roll or freshly steamed mussels. If you have more time, continue east to Souris for a cruise on a lobster boat.
How do I get to Prince Edward Island?
You can fly non-stop to Charlottetown Airport (YYG) from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa year round, and seasonally from Calgary and smaller Canadian cities. For more flight options, consider jetting into Nova Scotia’s Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), which has non-stop flights to additional Canadian, US and European cities. It’s a three-hour drive or bus trip from Halifax airport to PEI over the Confederation Bridge. Maritime Bus can take you to Charlottetown from Halifax airport or from other destinations in Nova Scotia and neighboring New Brunswick.
Although PEI has no train service, Canada’s national rail carrier, Via Rail , can bring you from Montreal or Quebec City to Halifax or to Moncton, New Brunswick. From there, take the bus or rent a car to continue to the island.
How do I get around Prince Edward Island?
In compact, walkable Charlottetown, most attractions are along the waterfront or in the historic center. T3 Transit , the island’s public transit service, runs buses to Charlottetown Airport and around the city. T3 Transit’s rural routes provide limited service between Charlottetown and other island destinations. While services are infrequent, the fares are fantastic value – only C$2 to travel anywhere on the island – if you can align your travels with the bus schedule.
PEI is relatively flat, making it a good destination for cyclists. Following the route of a decommissioned rail line, the Confederation Trail runs 273km (170 miles) through the island center, and you can also cycle the Island Walk, which takes you primarily on less-busy roads.
Top things to do on Prince Edward Island
Go to the beach.
PEI has dozens of them. Some of the best stretches of sand are along the north shore in Prince Edward Island National Park, but there are sandy beaches around the island.
Dive into a novel
Learn the story of Anne of Green Gables , one of Canada’s most beloved fictional characters, and her creator Lucy Maud Montgomery at sights like Green Gables Heritage Place or Anne of Green Gables Museum .
Catch your dinner with a fiddling fisherman
JJ Chaisson is a lobster fisher and musician. Along with his wife Julie, he runs The Fiddling Fisherman , taking guests out on their family fishing boat for a lobster dinner, accompanied by music from Chaisson’s fiddle.
Learn about Indigenous culture
Take a food, music or art workshop in the First Nations community of Lennox Island. You might learn to bake bannock – a biscuit-like bread – over an open fire, get an introduction to traditional quill work, or craft your own moose-hide drum.
Clap along at a ceilidh
Drawing on Irish, Scottish and maritime traditions, a ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) is part concert and part kitchen party, blending lively fiddle music, singing, dancing and storytelling. These musical events take place in pubs, community halls and concert venues across Prince Edward Island.

My favorite thing to do on Prince Edward Island
My favorite thing to do on PEI is walk, following sections of the Island Walk , a 700km (435-mile) route around the entire isle. Modeled after Spain’s Camino de Santiago (though without a pilgrimage history), the Island Walk has 32 sections of 20–25km (12–15 miles) each, which take you along PEI’s sandy beaches and into its forests, above its red cliffs and through its small towns. You can walk for a day, a week, or more, listening to the splash of the surf, the chirps of the birds and the quiet sounds of island life.
If you’d like help planning an extended walk, contact Go for a Walk: Island Walk Coordination Service and Outer Limit Sports , local outfits who can organize a walking itinerary, provide luggage transfer services and arrange accommodations. You can cycle the Island Walk, too. MacQueen’s Bike Shop in Charlottetown rents bicycles and provides trip-planning services for cyclists.
How much money do I need for Prince Edward Island?
While PEI isn’t as pricey as major Canadian cities like Vancouver or Toronto, it’s not inexpensive either, especially during the summer high season. The island has only a few budget lodgings, with dorm beds starting at C$50 and basic doubles around C$120. Many traditional inns and B&Bs fall into the midrange, beginning around C$150 per night. If you’re watching your loonies, consider a cottage or motel room with a kitchen where you can prepare some of your own meals.
Take public transit if you can. T3 Transit fares for adults are only C$2 a ride, whether you’re traveling within the capital or across the island, and kids ride free. Neither Uber nor Lyft currently operate on PEI, but Kari , a local rideshare company, provides service, primarily in the Charlottetown area. Depending on the season, car rentals in Charlottetown range from C$50 to over C$100 per day.
Some sample food and drink prices around PEI:
- Coffee: C$3–4
- Craft beer in an island taproom: C$8–10
- Pound of PEI mussels: C$14–18
- Lobster roll: C$27 and up
- Traditional lobster supper: C$50–60 per person
Wear the lobster bib
Many seafood restaurants give you a bib to wear if you’ve ordered a whole lobster. Don’t be shy – tie it on to protect your clothes. Eating a lobster can be a messy business.
Pack layers and rain gear
While the weather is generally temperate from spring through fall, it can get breezy and cool by the shore or in the evening and it can rain at any time. Keep a light jacket or sweater in your day pack. PEI winters are cold, damp and often snowy. Not only do you need warm jackets, hats, gloves and boots, but be prepared for winter travel conditions, including snow-covered roads and high winds.
It’s colder on the water
If you’re heading out on a lobster boat or other cruise, remember that it’s chillier on the water, even in summer. Bring a jacket or clothes you can layer.
“Ask an Islander”
If you want to know more about Prince Edward Island or have a question while planning your trip, “Ask an Islander.” On the website of Tourism PEI , the provincial tourism organization, you can post a question and a local resident will answer your query.
