Must-try experiences
Create more than utterly unforgettable memories.
If you belong to that rare breed of traveller that’s looking beyond the latest hotspot for an extraordinary sincere and handcrafted experience, one that brings you as close as possible to the land, wildlife and people at hand – you’ve come to the right place. Think guided bushman nature walks following along the paths animals roam free, habitual meerkats keenly observing the dessert from atop your head, and scenic helicopter flights rewarding unreal aerial views of the Okavango Delta’s most remote and inaccessible spaces.
Immersive adventures that engage all your senses
Slow life right down and encounter the bush from an entire new perception, one that highlights the small miracles, from smelling and tasting wild medicinal herbs to listening the alarm call of the grey go-away bird to observing herds of red lechwa antelope drinking from the very water you are gliding through. Follow waterways that were once taken by river Bushman and BaYei people centuries ago or tread mindfully in the tracks of the Okavango Delta’s most celebrated wildlife.
Adrenaline-seeking ventures, beyond the classic safari
More often than not awarding travellers with the rare opportunity to uncover the untamed landscape with very few others, Botswana offers more than your usual safari experience, but rather one that is intimate, remote and exclusive. Promising up-close views of unique wildlife and vegetation, take to the roads, rivers or skies, reveling in the semi-aquatic antelope, intricate network of winding channels, impressive Tiger fish fishing excursions and scenic flights uncovering far-flung inaccessible spaces.
Travel itineraries that give more than they take

- Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi Game Reserve is a pristine safari paradise.
A little bit about Moremi Game Reserve
Welcome to the oldest protected section of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
A 100 years after explorer David Livingstone called this land ‘country full of rivers’, the environment and wildlife in the Moremi area were under threat. It is because of the bold, local Batawana people that this area was proclaimed Moremi Game Reserve in 1963, making Moremi the oldest and first protected reserve of the Okavango Delta.
As a sign of gratitude, the reserve is named after Batawana tribe members, Chief Moremi III and his wife. Now, the Moremi Game Reserve is one of the most diverse reserves with surprises everywhere, even for the most seasoned Africa-travelers.

Absolute dream vacation. Took our then 12 and 14 year old daughters, who cried when we left. The people, the service, the food, the view, the safaris.... If you every get the opportunity GO!!
Our guide OD was wonderful and willingly shared his vast knowledge and insight of the animals. We were incredibly lucky to see the packs of wild dogs three days running.

Straight off the small plane, straight into a jeep and within minutes we were seeing 3 different animals. WOW!
The camp works hard to minimise its environmental footprint and when staying at Khwai you feel like you are nature's guest and not intruding. The tents are spacious, clean and the beds super comfy.
The camp is beautifully appointed and maintained and the food was excellent, whether served in the dining room or outside under the shade of the huge trees.
Moremi Video
The best way of getting an idea what the Moremi Game Reserve is about is by seeing some incredible footage from the area. View this video of Camp Moremi to experience one of the lodges and wildlfe in the game reserve.
Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Botswana. Today.
It is truly the Land of Plenty. It is hard to drive for more than a few minutes without coming across zebra, giraffe, impala or other game.
Quite a number of animals are passing through the camp – imagine you are in the swimming pool and a group of elephants is passing by only a few meters from you without any “protection” in between!
We loved Moremi, mainly because it was the least developed and crowded of all the parks we visited.

Top 10 Best Botswana Luxury Safari Camps & Lodges
Heather Richardson is an award-winning travel writer, based in South Africa. She is interested in conservation stories, emerging destinations and adventure travel.
When it comes to picking the best Botswana safari camps, there is a lot of choice. Botswana is known for its luxury boutique camps and lodges. The best manage to deliver excellent service and provide full amenities while being environmentally responsible . From the Okavango Delta to the unearthly Makgadikgadi Pans, here are some of the most popular, top-rated Botswana safari camps.
1. Zarafa, Okavango Delta
Zarafa is undoubtedly one of the best Botswana safari camps, with just four luxury tents located in the Selinda Concession of the Okavango Delta. It is owned by nature documentary filmmakers and conservationists, Dereck and Beverly Joubert. One of the perks at Zarafa is that they loan out state-of-the-art camera equipment to guests, affording them the best possible photography during their stay.
2. Jack’s Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans
In the Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana – vast salt flats, home to a surprising amount of wildlife – Jack’s Camp has lots of character. Designed in the style of a 1940s safari camp, it was founded by one of Africa’s most famous guides, Ralph Bousfield. The camp allows guests to explore the pans on foot with the bushmen, on quad bikes, or, of course, in a game drive vehicle. Watching the sunset over the barren salt flats and stargazing when all the light has faded are two experiences not to be missed.
Jack’s Camp Tours
3. Belmond Eagle Island Lodge, Okavango Delta
One for those who need their creature comforts and struggle with the heat, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta is one of the few camps in Botswana to have air-conditioning. For many people, this is a deal-maker! The 12-tent luxury lodge is also in a great spot for photographic and water-based safaris. A private helicopter trip to Fallen Fig Island is a highlight.
4. Meno a Kwena, Makgadikgadi Pans
Allegedly Prince Harry’s favourite Botswana camp, Meno a Kwena is perched above the Boteti River on the border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. From here you can go on boat cruises down the river, take walks with the bushmen, and head off on day-trips into the park. As Meno is just 90 minutes’ drive from Maun, it’s an ideal place to spend a day or two relaxing at the start or end of a Botswana safari.
Meno a Kwena Tours
5. Duba Plains Camp, Duba Plains
The lions of Duba Plains are famous buffalo hunters and this lodge-like Zarafa, also owned by the Jouberts’ company, Great Plains Conservation – is one of the best places to see them in action. These lions are documented in National Geographic’s Relentless Enemies, which is a must-watch movie before your visit. The area is also rich in birdlife. Overlooking the floodplain, the camp has just five, luxuriously appointed tents, each with private plunge pools.
6. Mombo Camp, Okavango Delta
Arguably the most famous – and in demand – of the best Botswana safari camps, Mombo is known for the huge amount of wildlife that surrounds it. Known as the ‘place of plenty’, lions and leopards are commonly sighted, alongside rare creatures such as the Pel’s fishing owl. Though very luxurious, the camp is also eco-friendly; among other eco-initiatives, it is 100% solar-powered.
Mombo Camp Tours
7. Uncharted Africa Mobile Camp, Okavango Delta
One of the best ways to explore the delta is in a mobile camp, moving locations during the day and setting up camp in a new spot each night. This is a traditional, adventurous style of safari. However, with a camp like Uncharted’s, you needn’t forego all the luxury. These tents have Persian rugs, campaign-style furnishings and proper beds. The guiding is also excellent.
8. Abu Camp, Okavango Delta
Abu Camp’s elephants are the camp’s main draw. These ellies are habituated and you can join them for a walk through the bush, meet each member of the herd and learn all about their habits and characters. Abu Camp has five tents and overlooks a lagoon in a beautiful Okavango Delta hardwood forest. Alongside the elephant interactions, the camp offers game drives and mokoro trips through the delta.
9. Chobe Game Lodge, Chobe NP
Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent lodge in Chobe National Park , one of the best places to see big herds of elephants in the wild. Though a larger lodge with 47 rooms, it’s a great Chobe base. It is known for having electric game vehicles and boats, which are not just environmentally friendly, but also less alarming for animals. Chobe Game Lodge is also recognised for having the first all-female guiding team in Botswana.
Chobe Game Lodge Tours
10. Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp, Okavango Delta
Occupying its own island and overlooking a lagoon deep in the Okavango Delta, Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp belongs to the outstanding &Beyond portfolio of camps. You won’t even need to leave camp to experience wildlife, with elephants often wandering past and lions roaring nearby in the night. The tents themselves are large and luxurious, and each comes with a private plunge pool.

- 10 Best Luxury Safari Camps and Lodges in Botswana
Botswana's Ten Finest Luxury Safari Camps
The grandest luxury in Africa is not found in eccentric buildings claiming to be the newest marvel of contemporary architecture but in the age-old habitats that have been home to life for millennia. This is true of Botswana's lodges and safari camps more than any other country, where the desert meets oases, and the seasonal herds migrate in the wilderness's cyclical seasons.
Mombo Camp, located on a large stretch of land in the heart of the Okavango Delta known as Chief's Island, is a jewel of the swamps. The unimpeded views peering out from the trees that shelter the camp is breathtaking, with wooden decks and a fire-pit for guests to enjoy the evenings with delicious food and great company.
Kings Pool Camp
Kings Pool Camp sits at the edge of the Okavango Delta's water, its triangular thatched roofs and firelight creating a warm and cozy atmosphere under the stars. The camp's nine private units face the water, offering exquisite views of the surrounding natural beauty.
Like its peers, Abu Camp offers guests all the views and promise of close interactions with nature's most majestic beasts, only at a somewhat more intimate level. Here, guests can look at the Delta from the back of an elephant, with professional rangers guiding them every step in a quintessential experience no one should miss.
Khwai River Lodge
The Khwai River floods the Moremi Game Reserve on the Okavango Delta's southeastern periphery. The beautiful Khwai River Lodge sits on its banks, and from the viewing deck, it almost feels as though you are floating alongside the lily pads of the swamps.
Eagle Island
This luxury safari lodge, which has existed since the 1980s but was beautifully renovated in 2015 to give it a refreshingly modern look in the same breathtaking landscape, is an old favorite of many. Mokoros, the traditional canoes of the area, is a wonderful experience to try out here and explore the many rivers and streams of this interconnected desert oasis.
Sandibe Safari Lodge
Sandibe Safari Lodge is luxurious and beautiful, with a very accommodating and friendly staff culture. Children are welcome, and additional supervision can be organized for them. The lodge's guided walking safaris await the adventurous and are a great way to experience the wilderness here, in addition to the classic open-vehicle game drives.
Chiefs Camp
Chiefs Camp, as its name alludes to, is a camp fit for a king. The camp offers all the amenities one would expect of a boutique hotel in a big city, including a spa, gym, and, of course, an amazing restaurant. It also offers the many unique experiences of the Okavango, blending luxury and adventure.
The first entry on our list not found in the Okavango Delta has undoubtedly earned its place. This spectacular lodge is located within a private conservancy on the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, an area untouched by humankind. The nights are painted by dazzling displays of stars, and the arid landscape stretches for hundreds of kilometers. Dinaka certainly warrants a visit, especially for those looking for something off the beaten track.
Jack's Camp is a beautiful tented camp near the Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana—one of only two nesting sites of the southern lesser flamingo. The camp has been recently renovated and offers a beautiful and comfortable place to explore the area and its wildlife.
Chobe Chilwero
Choose Chilwero Lodge, which is located in the Chobe National Park and is famous for its huge elephant herds and lush greenery. Here, guests can enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature under the huge trees on the lodge's premises or experience the adventure that is Africa on a safari or walking tour.

Best botswana safari lodges: 9 incredible places to stay in botswana.
Botswana is renowned for its world-leading hospitality. Lodge staff are welcoming, rooms are comfortable and, of course, the safaris are second to none. But with so many wonderful safari lodges in Botswana, it can be difficult to choose where to stay!
Luckily for you, I’ve done the hard work in this post. I’ve picked out 9 of the best safari lodges in Botswana that guarantee a wonderful stay, no matter what your budget .
Nxabega &Beyond Lodge, Okavango Delta
Nxabega (pronounced Na-bay-ha with a click on the n if you can manage it!) was the highlight of a recent trip to Botswana for me. This luxury safari lodge has 9 tents, each with a King-size bed, an en-suite bathroom with a shower and double sinks, a writing desk and a seating area. Outside each tent is an outdoor rainfall shower, a seating area and a comfortable swinging chair, overlooking the plains that surround the lodge.
All of the staff at Nxabega are bright, cheerful and incredibly kind. Guests are looked after by a personal butler, who greets them after every game drive with a drink and serves them their food each mealtime. Meals are served at individual tables set up in the dining room, on the terrace around the swimming pool or, on special occasions, around the fire in the boma. There are multiple menu options, but rest assured – they’re all delicious!
Located in the Okavango Delta, Nxabega lodge makes a wonderful base for game drives and mokoro trips. The land around the lodge is teeming with wildlife including leopards, lions, buffalo, elephants and rhinos, as well as wild dogs, baboons and hippos.
A stay at Nxabega can be booked directly through &Beyond or Go2Africa .
Sandibe &Beyond Lodge, Okavango Delta
Sandibe (pronounced San-dee-bay) is one of the most luxurious and best safari lodges in Botswana. Guests stay in wooden cabins on stilts, furnished with items that wouldn’t look out of place in a boutique hotel in the city. Each huge bed is surrounded by a gorgeous canopy, while the comfortable seating area is ideal for a lazy afternoon before the game drive. The bathroom is super stylish, with double sinks, a conical shower with a skylight and a separate dressing area too. Behind the large sliding doors is an outdoor deck with a comfortable bench and plunge pool overlooking the plains.
Sandibe’s communal areas are like no other safari lodge in the world. The main building was designed to resemble a pangolin, with a huge curved roof and tapered edges. It’s filled with plush cushions, sofas and armchairs, a cocktail bar, a designer fireplace, a dining room and an open kitchen where you have the option to build your own lunch every day.
As an &Beyond lodge, guests are allocated a private butler who serves the food and drinks and looks after your every whim and fancy while staying at Sandibe. All the staff we met were wonderful, and help you feel right at home straight away.
Safari guides and trackers at Sandibe are some of the best in the world. They’re incredibly knowledgeable about the animals in the Okavango Delta, as well as the history and geography of the area surrounding the lodge. We were lucky enough to see a large family of cheetahs on our first day, as well as lions, elephants and plenty of other animals throughout our stay.

Boteti Tented Camp, Okavango Delta
Boteti offers one of the best value safaris in Botswana. As a tented camp, guests stay in traditional safari tents furnished with double beds, storage chests and private toilet facilities. Each tent has a terrace complete with chairs overlooking the grounds surrounding the intimate camp.
Boteti’s communal areas allow guests to fully relax both before and after a game drive. With soft furnishings and other beautiful furniture inspired by nature around it, Boteti offers a real home-from-home. Enjoy a buffet breakfast and lunch while observing the comings and goings along the river, and make sure to join the staff in the cosy lounge for afternoon tea. In the evening, candlelit dinners are served in the dining area after a drink around the campfire.
The camp is located a short drive from Maun, with airport transfers included in your stay. Its location outside of the major national parks makes Boteti a much more budget-friendly option, but still, with the same level of exceptional service you can come to expect in Botswana. Safari activities on offer include traditional game drives in the Okavango Delta and Moremi, mokoro safaris along the Boteti river, and nature walks in the surrounding area.
Book a stay at Boteti Tented Camp with free cancellation on Booking.com , or directly through Boteti itself.
Chobe Under Canvas, Chobe National Park
As the name suggests, guest rooms at Chobe Under Canvas are tents located in Chobe National Park. But, they are unlike any other tent you’ve stayed in before! Each one is furnished with solid wooden furniture including bedside tables with solar-powered lamps, a fully-stocked bathroom and comfortable King-size beds, laid with luxurious bed sheets and soft pillows for an excellent night’s sleep.
Chobe Under Canvas is a mobile camp, where the whole thing relocates every few weeks to allow the land to regenerate. This means the camp staff pack all the tents, furniture and supplies into trucks once all the guests have left, and set it all back up in a new location as if it has always been there.
Safaris here take place in Chobe National Park and along the Chobe River. It’s a very popular area among tourists owing to the concentration of elephants and other big game that drink from the river banks. Both game drives and trips on the water are possible here, giving visitors a unique opportunity to view wildlife from an angle not often experienced.
Get in touch with the travel advisers at &Beyond or Go2Africa to book.
Ghoha Hills, Savuti, Chobe National Park
Ghoha Hills is an example of an absolutely stunning safari lodge in Savuti National Park, Botswana. With communal buildings and guest tents in an elevated position, every moment of your stay comes with an exceptional view out over the African plains and an active waterhole.
Despite being made of canvas, it’s hard to believe the rooms are tents, as they all feature real wooden floors, comfortable double beds, fully plumbed-in bathrooms, armchairs and a private outdoor balcony too.
If you can tear yourself away from your room, Ghoha Hills boasts a massage centre, fully-equipped gym and swimming pool, and plenty of areas to lounge, eat restaurant-quality food and take in the sights and sounds of the bush.
Both morning and afternoon safaris are conducted in open-sided jeeps, traversing along the private roads and waterholes of Savuti and Chobe National Park. Guests can also request a day trip out to Savuti Marsh, Baobab Theatre, Bushman Rock Paintings and Pimple Hills.
A double or twin tent can be booked online with free cancellation at Booking.com . Alternatively, book directly with Ghoha Hill.

Omogolo Bush Lodges, Okavango Delta
For an exclusive experience in Botswana, choose Omogolo Bush Lodges , which borders the Okavango Delta. Accommodation here comprises one or two-bedroom houses that are available for private use.
Staff are on-call at all hours of the day or night, for housekeeping or other requirements. The lodges are all self-catering, so make sure you bring enough of your favourite food with you to last the duration of your trip (or a private chef!)
Each lodge boasts a spacious lounge area, fully equipped kitchen and king-size bedroom (or two, depending on which lodge you choose!). The houses are built on stilts, allowing for an outdoor shower, expansive balcony and even a private bathroom overlooking the waterhole. The latest addition to Omogolo Bush Lodges, Mangwane, also boasts an outdoor firepit area as well as a swimming pool, perfect for relaxation.
Located in 1,600 hectares of wilderness bordering the Okavango Delta, the staff can organise mokoro boat trips on the water, or guided bush walks in the area surrounding the lodges. Self-drive safaris may be available in the reserve, but so check with staff for the latest advice before booking. The private reserve is home to elephants, lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs and many prey species too. Guests may choose to simply observe the wildlife from the natural waterholes that each lodge overlooks.
Find out more about the lodges available at Booking.com .
Savute Under Canvas, Savuti, Chobe National Park
As the name suggests, Savute Under Canvas is a mobile tented camp with guests staying in traditional canvas safari tents, furnished with a king-size bed, storage chest and private bathroom with a bucket shower and flush toilets. In front of each tent is a set of camp chairs where guests can relax after a game drive with their feet in buckets of cold water.
Perhaps the most rustic on this list of the best Botswana safari lodges, the staff at Savute Under Canvas still know how to deliver a luxurious experience. Exceptional food is served around a central dining table for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which is made all the more impressive when you learn it’s all cooked in the minimal camp kitchen or on the campfire itself.
Safaris at Savute Under Canvas are a wonderful introduction to Botswana. Guests join their guide on a traditional safari vehicle, allowing for exceptional game viewing of all the Big 5 and more.
Askiebos: Samochima Bush Camp, Okavango Panhandle
This family-run camp on the banks of the Okavango offers comfortable accommodation in the heart of the natural forest. Translated from Afrikaans, ‘Askiebos’ means ‘sorry, bush’, which is what the owners said to the forest each time they made way for their family home. This desire to live in harmony with nature continues to this day, with Samochima Bush Camp ‘s owners offering outdoor showers, organic produce and open-air toilets for their nature-loving guests.
Each luxurious tent sleeps two people in super-comfortable beds, with private bathrooms, fluffy towels and an area to relax outside on the deck. Some have mini bars, baths and wi-fi, but make sure you check before you book.
The beautiful communal lounge is furnished with comfortable sofas, plush cushions, blankets and plenty of places to enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush, as well as the nearby stream. Home-cooked food and warm hosts complete the long list of reasons guests return again and again to this slice of paradise in Botswana.
Though not a traditional safari lodge in that game drives aren’t included in the package, there is still plenty of activities on offer. Enjoy sunset boat cruises, basket weaving workshops, guided bird walks and much more.
Book a stay at Samochima Bush Camp on Booking.com with free cancellation.
Xaro Lodge, Okavango Delta
Xaro Lodge is another permanent tented camp situated along the banks of the Okavango Delta, in an area considered to be a birder’s paradise. Only accessible by boat, guests are treated to the peace and tranquillity of an exclusive lodge, and all the luxury of one too.
Guests stay in canvas Meru tents fitted with double beds, a dressing area and a private en-suite shower. But with these tents, it’s on the outside that counts. Slide open the large glass door at the foot of the bed, and make yourself at home with a glass of wine in one of the chairs overlooking the river. Bliss.
Communal areas in Xaro Lodge are the perfect place to relax, with plush sofas, bookshelves, and a large dining table where exceptional food is served. Outdoor spaces include a swimming pool, armchairs from which to watch the sunset and a firepit ideal for getting to know your campmates after a busy day in the bush.
With boat tours and cruises on the Okavango, walking safaris with expert guides and excursions to nearby World Heritage Sites all available for an additional cost at the lodge, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. But don’t ignore the simple pleasure of exploring the area around the camp, keeping your eyes peeled for the huge number of birds calling it home.
Stays at Xaro Lodge can be booked with free cancellation on Booking.com .

Camp Savuti epitomises the Botswana safari experience. From rewarding game viewing opportunities to the authentic, tented accommodation, this is the traditional way to spend time in one of Africa's most superb wildlife regions.
Camp Savuti is an understated camp beautifully decorated with African-inspired woodwork, cattle skin rugs, and arts and crafts that give the camp an authentic feel. There are 5 Meru-style tents built on elevated wooden decks overlooking the expansive Savuti marsh and channel area.
The Savuti region became famous for its exceptional game viewing opportunities, in particular for its lions that prey and hunt on elephants, which are found in abundance in the area. Award-winning documentaries have been shot in the Savuti area, cementing its reputation as a prime wildlife destination.
At Camp Savuti, guests will experience the thrill of getting close to top predators and watch them in their natural habitat. Activities include two guided game drives a day, which take place in the Savuti region.
From rewarding game viewing opportunities to the iconic Chobe accommodation, this is a sublime way to spend time in one of Africa's most superb wildlife regions.
Camp Savuti is located in the Savuti channel in a remote corner of the Chobe National Park and is surrounded by the Savuti Marsh area. Travelling to Camp Savuti involves a light air transfer from Maun or Kasane (depending on guests' itinerary) to the Savuti airstrip in Chobe National Park.
It is an approximate 40-minute flight from either of the towns and the view from the aircraft over the beautiful Chobe becomes a part of the experience.
Upon arrival at Savuti airstrip, guests will be met by a representative from Camp Savuti and driven the last 20–40-minute journey to the camp.
This road transfer could be considered more of a game drive, as it traverses through the Chobe National Park and there is a likely chance of spotting any number of animals before even arriving at camp.

We so enjoyed the boat trips, big and small, the helicopter ride was the BEST and a must, and sundowners on the overlooking the delta were great.
As we were in our boat, just as the sun was going down, a male elephant came out of the reeds and crossed the lagoon right next to us - simply magical.
This area of the Okavango is stunning, with both deep water channels and open park-like grasslands with beautiful trees that go on forever. Watching the red lechwe fly over the water is grace itself.

Meet Neeltjie De Graaff
Neeltjie (de Graaff) Bower owner and professional safari guide at Grassland Safari Lodge is a native Botswana and fifth-generation citizen and resident in Ghanzi. Neeltjie’s family arrived in Ghanzi in 1898 with the Dorsland trek from South Africa. Neeltjie grew up on a cattle ranch where she and the San (Bushman) children shared the pleasure of a free childhood in a natural environment. She is the eldest daughter of Willie and Annatjie de Graaff and has three sisters. After attending college in South Africa, studying travel and tourism, she obtained her professional safari guide license in Botswana in 1996 and worked with some of the top safari operators in Southern Africa. With Neeltjie’s vast knowledge of the culture, animals, and country, she will guide you through a magnificent experience observing the interaction of the world’s oldest living people together with nature in the ancient Kalahari. Neeltjie has a close affinity with the San and shared love for all things natural and it is apparent from the outset. Guests at Grassland Safari Lodge can take advantage of this special relationship, as Neeltjie can introduce you to the local people, who are all too willing to give you an insight into their world and give guests a true Bushman experience. Communicating in Naro (a bushman language which some refer to as “clicks”, because of the curious clicking sounds made with the tongue) there is an obvious close bond between the local people and Neeltjie. She is married to Tiaan Bower who helps to manage the lodge. Tiaan is an industrial engineer but uses his skills to help manage the lodge alongside Neeltjie. They have two daughters, Anri and Nelien, who are also fluent in the Naro bushman language. Neeltjie and her family, together with the Bushman, can’t wait to welcome you to Grassland Safari Lodge.

Camp Moremi
Camp okavango, chobe game lodge.

It was day four of our trip to Botswana with Desert & Delta, and my fiancé and I were on our first safari by mokoro , a traditional dug-out canoe. Gliding quietly through the Okavango Delta in our sunken seats, it felt like we were the only people on the planet — until we turned the bend and caught a glimpse of our next surprise through the reeds.
The staff of Camp Okavango, already fast friends of ours, stood ankle-deep in the river, grinning and waving their arms in the air, excited to show us the full bar they’d set up for sundowners, right in the middle of the water. As the sun started to set and they handed us our gin and tonics, an elephant appeared, perfectly on cue.

Most evenings, our guide, Isak, took a “wrong turn” that ended with a cheeky smile and stunning cocktail setup in an impossibly remote spot, yet somehow we found ourselves truly surprised each time. Add in the serendipitous cooperation of the local wildlife, and you have a recipe for pure magic that couldn’t be replicated in the world’s best bars.
That element of surprise kept us on a natural high all week long — with credit due to the human and non-human animals in almost equal measure. On day one, we laughed when Isak told us his favorite safari animal was the human. By the end, while I was personally still torn between lions and elephants, humans had moved far up my list.
At Camp Okavango, we crossed the path of a lion while touring the bush on foot, got an overview of Nxaragha Island from a doorless helicopter, and went fishing downstream from a herd of hippos. At Camp Moremi, we started our mornings with families of monkeys, caught a majestic elephant water crossing, and watched the circle of life unfold as lions and lionesses took turns ravaging their prey. At Chobe Game Lodge, we marveled at spirited elephant calves splashing around while their elders protected them from crocs, and excitedly tracked little roars to find lion cubs playing at dusk. Leading each experience was a guide with encyclopedia-like knowledge that wowed us and enthusiasm that fueled our childlike wonder.
A 40-year-old company with nine camps and lodges that touch Botswana’s Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta, Savuti Channel, and more, Desert & Delta offers safaris by jeep, foot, and boat. Guests have the chance to mix and match camps to form their dream Botswana itinerary, or they can choose from curated all-inclusive packages . With more than 40 percent of its land dedicated to conservation, it’s difficult to beat Botswana as a safari destination — it’s home to eight game reserves, four national parks, and the largest African elephant population in the world. And there may be no better way to see the best of the country on one trip than going with Desert & Delta.
Within minutes of our bush plane landing near Camp Moremi , we encountered a new type of traffic as a journey of giraffes crossed in front of us, swiftly reminding us we weren't in Los Angeles anymore. The camp's location inside Moremi Game Reserve means the safari starts before you even check in. We arrived on property — a few hours late after begging to continue the game drive — and found 12 thatched tents, rebuilt in 2018 with canopied beds, private decks, and rain showers made of stone and wood. Cozy common areas included a bush-side fire pit deck, a pool, a library lounge, and a bar built around an ebony tree. We had many group meals at the long, wooden tables in the thatch-roofed dining room, and one romantic, private candlelit dinner on the deck.
On our November trip, morning and afternoon game drives through Moremi Game Reserve were where we found the majority of our animal sightings in Botswana, including lions, zebra, hippos, elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, and more. It’s also possible to see leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs. Steps from camp, we hopped on a motorized boat and explored the channels of the Xakanaxa Lagoon, where we spotted birds of all colors and sizes, an elephant taking a swim, and an unforgettable red sunset.
Located on a remote island in the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Camp Okavango feels like a secret hideaway. It holds 12 suites connected by a wooden boardwalk and surrounded by lush vegetation. Views of the surrounding wilderness from the dining room and pool deck below are completely different and equally beautiful as the day shifts from morning to night. For adventurous guests, there’s also a sleep-out deck with an immaculate bedroom and bathroom on a raised platform under the stars.
At Camp Okavango, safaris are by boat (motorized and mokoro), on foot (with two protective guides), or by helicopter (for an additional fee). There are no vehicles there, but as we cruised the delta past hippos and elephants, made eye contact with a vigilant mother giraffe on foot, and paused to let a shy family of warthogs scurry by us, we didn’t miss the Jeep.
A true luxury lodge and the only permanent game lodge within Chobe National Park, it’s not hard to see why Chobe Game Lodge has attracted the likes of Prince Harry and Elizabeth Taylor, who wed Richard Burton there (for the second time) in 1975. The Lodge has 44 rooms, all looking out over the Chobe River, four of them with private plunge pools. With elegant dining areas and bars, a scenic boardwalk, and a billiard room, it’s easy to unwind between game drives and boat tours.
Here, all guides are female — a training program for women has been running since 2005 — and innovations in ecotourism have been recognized by the Botswana Tourism Organisation. Safaris are run via electric vehicles in the park and electric boats on the river, both gentle on the environment and offering a quiet approach that helps guests observe animals up close. Each day, we looked forward to boarding our boat with our guide, Miss B., and watching elephant families revel in their time at the watering hole, often coexisting with lions, hippos, and crocodiles on one incredibly lively riverbank.
A refurbished Nxamaseri Island Lodge reopened in May, and it now hosts Desert & Delta's first wellness spa. Guests are gifted a complimentary treatment and escorted to the spa by water in a mokoro. A new pool also looks over the Nxamaseri Channel.
Rebuilt and reopening in June for the 2024 safari season, Savute Safari Lodge now has 12 contemporary, temperature-controlled rooms with outdoor showers and Savute Channel views, plus indoor and outdoor dining, a pool, and a sunken wildlife viewing area that puts guests at eye level with the animals.
For a totally off-the-grid experience, guests of Desert & Delta's Leroo La Tau lodge between June and October can book a Makgadikgadi Salt Pan sleep-out to dine by an open fire immersed in nature and sleep on a rollout bed under the endless night sky. Leroo La Tau is also the best place to see a massive zebra migration — and it was refurbished with migration viewing in mind in 2023.

How to Plan a Safari in Botswana, According to Experts
A beginner's guide to safari vacations in Botswana.
An African safari ranks high on the wish list of many a world traveler. Of the millions of adventurers who make the trek here annually, the (ahem) lion’s share will end up in the game reserves of Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania — enduringly popular destinations for wildlife viewing in Africa. But in recent years, Botswana has been nipping at the heels of those countries.
Botswana is home to diverse landscapes that span delta to desert, and the local culture is vibrant and inviting. The Botswana bush is teeming with majestic fauna, including Africa’s largest population of elephants — they are protected by a government focused on conservation, and tour operators committed to the same. And a safari here means you get to enjoy all of the above with far fewer humans than in its aforementioned continental counterparts.
“Botswana is an anomaly in Africa,” said Ian Proctor, president and managing director of Ultimate Africa Safaris . “It is considered one of the safest and most stable democracies on the continent.”
Proctor has been preparing customized itineraries for safari-going clients since 1996, and during that time he estimates he’s personally enjoyed more than 250 experiences across the African continent. Botswana has become his go-to destination, and in no small part because of the modernization of its government.
“Citizens receive free universal healthcare, and LGBTQ+ communities are legally recognized,” he cited as examples. “And with a very small population, its wilderness areas are unparalleled — and, importantly, uncrowded.”
Ready to pack your bags? Here’s how to plan your Botswana safari, along with insight from experts on what you can expect along the way.
How to Get to Botswana
The most common way to get to the Botswana bush is by way of Safarilink flights out of Maun National Airport (MUB), in the northwestern part of the country. Midsized runways here can’t accommodate jumbo jets, so you won’t find direct service here from the U.S. That’s a mixed blessing, though. The added stop you’ll need — in either Johannesburg or Cape Town — weeds out those tourists who aren’t willing to brave nearly 16 hours of total flight time.
Really, it’s not nearly as arduous as it seems. American carriers now offer multiple direct options per day into South Africa from New York and Atlanta. And if you work with an outfitter like Ultimate Africa Safaris , you can bookend your safari with well-curated layovers in those connecting cities.
Best Times to Go to Botswana
Weather-wise, Botswana is at its most inviting from early May through the end of September. Temperatures are more moderate during these winter months, and malaria is less prevalent. Things start to get somewhat wet come mid-October, but if birding is your thing, the rainy season is precisely when you want to arrive. The Nata Bird Sanctuary along the northeastern edge of the massive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is the world’s largest breeding ground for Lesser and Greater Flamingo. This ancient, Switzerland-sized lakebed is a shrimp-infested food source for the birds, which pass through by the hundreds of thousands from November through March.
Best Places to Stay
When it comes to world-class safari camps, this part of Africa is chockablock with options. They run the gamut from rugged to ultra-luxe, and are scattered across every corner of the country’s dynamic terrain. You’ll want to allot ample time to explore the Okavango Delta. This massive marshland in northern Botswana boasts a footprint of nearly 8,000 square miles and is regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. From there, you can transfer by bush plane to the outskirts of the Kalahari Desert to enjoy a wholly different landscape.
“Botswana dedicates so much space for wildlife — we are actually in the top 10 percent in the world for wildlife conservation,” said Super Sande, a native of Botswana who has been a guide in the country for 32 years. “Between the wet and dry parts of our country, the diversity of game that you see is like nowhere else. You can be surrounded by thousands of zebra and wildebeest and be the only car there. It’s so special.”
Logistically, it’s easiest to take all of these wonders in by booking an all-inclusive package with a tour operator. One such example is Natural Selection's “Botswana Explorer” package, which covers multitudes of terrain over 10 days, including an overnight on a Delta houseboat and luxe stays in private game reserves. The program starts at $8,235 per person, which includes a guide, transfers, and meals along the way.
As for individual standouts, Jack’s Camp is king of the desert. The legendary outpost along the edge of the salt pan underwent a full rebuild in 2021, and it now boasts rooms with private plunge pools and bedside air conditioning. Its common area is the aesthetic equivalent of stepping into the late 19th century, anchored by a Persian tea tent and a full bar with a comprehensive collection of cultural artifacts. Prices at the year-round lodge range from $1,450 to $2,495 per night, depending on room size and time of year.
In the Delta, a similar level of luxury can be found at Tuludi . The seven-room property sits on the Khwai Private Reserve — 772 square miles of floodplain awash with wildlife. Suites feature outdoor baths and plunge pools. Don’t be surprised if you’re visited in the evening hours by the local herd of elephants who enjoy feeding on foliage here once the sun has set.
Later this year, Tawana Camp will become the newest option in the Okavango, and the only camp located within the protected Moremi Game Reserve. This exclusivity is owed to a first-of-its-kind partnership between Natural Selection and the BaTawana nation — who have stewarded the land since the late 18th century (the camp takes its name from the nation's current ruler). It will feature all the trappings of five-star living, including butler service and its own gym. The whole camp is positioned alongside a gently rolling river crowded with hippos, lions, and zebra.
What You’ll See in Botswana
If you stay on a riverfront camp such as Duke’s , you can head out into the water on traditional canoe-like vessels known as mokorom, and from this vantage point, you’ll spy African fish eagles and saddle-billed storks along the shore. You’ll also likely paddle past hippos, whose eyes hover menacingly just above the waterline. Back on dry land, lions prowl in outsized prides, leopards carry slain impala into the trees, and baboons scamper across the plains by the dozen.
Elephant fans will want to book a stay at Hyena Pan , hidden among the thick mopane forests of Khwai Private Reserve. A short game drive from here brings you to a repurposed shipping container abutting a watering hole. This is the Elephant Hide, and it affords the most intimate spectacle imaginable of the largest living land animal, which congregate just a few inches from a narrow viewing slot fashioned into the side of a steel wall.
In the salt pan, you can marvel at colorful creatures of all shapes, sizes, and speeds. The edge of the ancient lakebed is inundated with meerkats, Cape hares, aardwolves, hyenas, and cheetahs, to name but a small cross section of species.
“I see the most interesting things here at night, especially,” Sande said. “I just recently saw two honey badgers fighting off some jackals. No two game drives are ever the same.”
A lot of a safari experience depends on good fortune, of course. But luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity, and the difference between a good guide and a great guide is careful planning, according to Kagisano Bapute, who steers guests towards unforgettable game viewing in and around Tuludi Camp.
“You have to stay up to date with everything going on from day to day, and from season to season,” Bapute added. “You’re always checking in with a network of trackers, and you have to be working around the clock, so you’re not just going out there blindly once you have guests with you.”
What You’ll Eat and Drink
While staying at any high-end safari camp, you can expect robust meals that rotate regularly, often featuring staples of Western cuisine. At Tuludi, for example, elegant pasta dishes are mainstays on the menu. Sable Alley has its own pizza station.
While it’s easy to gravitate toward the familiar — and there are certainly some great hamburgers to be enjoyed in the bush — if you’ve come all this way, do as the locals do and save room for seswaa . The flavorful beef stew is frequently served for supper along with local bread, phapatha . Vegetarians can keep an eye out for morogo , a spinach dish studded with onions and tomatoes.
When it comes to cocktails, gin is king here, and Okavango even has its very own. The award-winning eponymous offering is distilled with local botanicals, including the mopane seed. At Sable Alley, the bar staff is working it into the Bluebird: two parts gin, one part blue curaçao, and a splash of simple syrup, garnished with a slice of lemon.
Alternatively, book a stay at San Camp and you’ll drive into the heart of the Kalahiri for cocktail hour. A makeshift bar is set up atop the pale, crusted earth, just in time for sunset. Once it gets dark, a multi-course feast is prepared by campfire, with nary another soul in sight. For dessert, gaze up at the most dazzling star-scape you’ll ever see.

I'd greatly appreciate input on what Im currently considering:
Makgadikgadi Pan & Kalahari with 2 nights at Meno a Kwena
Okavango Moremi Game Reserve for 3 nights at Kanana
Okavango Delta for 2 nights at Sable Valley
Victoria Falls for 2 nights at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
I believe Kanana and Sable Valley are fairly close, but different enough experiences, but not certain. Also, will these camps be in great locations? They appear to be small and nice, but so hard to tell with any certainty. Due to time and expense this is a big decision as my goal/bucket list is visit Botswana once and go back to Rwanda to round out my African travels. I seek serene locations where I can witness the spectacular .wildlife. I selected Botswana largely because of what I've read on these forums. Thank you for any input I appreciate your time and experience. Apologize for typos...it won't let me edit title..oops

Overall it's a balanced itinerary....
Meno a Kwena is a little weak though.... it's not in the Kalahari, but on the edge of the Makgdikgadi Salt Pans, sort of on the wrong side though, so you don't really have access to the real salt pans in that area and don't have access to the habituated meerkats.... However it's not a bad place at all and depending on the time year you are going it may have the Boteti river flowing well, a magnet for many zebra.
With same company who own Meno a Kwena, you have Camp Kalahari (confusing name as its not in the central Kalahari)... this is in the perfect area to exploit the Salt Pans and the activities are very good with good access to the meerkats. Its on the other side of the Makgadikgadi to Meno a Kwena... however I think you have not chosen it due to price?...
There is another camp called Planet Baobab, and like Camp Kalahari it's on the much better side of the Makgadikadi and offer the same activities to a degree like Camp Kalahari and in the same area.... its just a bit further away and much more basic but fun... here the activities are not included and you pay separately but they also have the meerkats and quad biking etc... its a cheaper camp but may be an alternative to Meno a Kwena which gets you to the better side of the area.
Kanana and Sable Alley are pretty good choices actually... and in the scheme of things they are actually quite far apart from each other.... with the Okavango, 10km distance could be views as 100km due to the nature of topography there.... Kanana is on the southern side of the Okavango and used to be more known for its water activities, but of late is now more game drives.... Sable Alley is generally a completely dry area to the north of the Okavango... pretty good area. Little Sable is in the same area and has the same access to the area as Sable Alley and is less per night.
As an alternative to Kanana and Sable Alley.... you could look to Pom Pom and 4Rivers for substitute camps in seriously good areas and a good price... the areas may be a little better as Pom Pom has access to very good permanent Okavango channels and 4Rivers is a more open area compared to Sable Alley where the mopane bushes can be a bit thick.
Vic Falls Safari Lodge is actually a great place... best sundowner bar in the town.
Owner of Safari Lifestyles
Local Operator
Roger thank you so much for the reply. You've given me much to think about! This trip is a canned offering through a small group tour. I am now thinking I should just create my own private safari. There are so many options. For instance, based on your comments I would not stay at Meno a Kwena. I am going to research a solo option with several prime locations/camps. and guides.I don't need luxury but I do want upper end and am willing to pay for it. Im pretty sure I will go either May or June so have time to get this right. Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge
best value would actually be June (for best weather) if you are looking to the Kwando Camps of Pom Pom, 4Rivers and others, as they have honestly the best wildlife areas and one of the very last companies to hold June at the shoulder or lower prices, as all others now class June as higher peak prices so several hundred USD more per night.... definitely I would look to book June asap as it books really fast due to lower rates....
May would also be good and all lodges have lower rates (mostly)
Where you go is critical, don't scrimp on the area and just go to the best lodge you can afford... paying for 5 star does not get you a better wildlife experience at all, just a more fancy lodge... all 4 star lodges in the private concessions are seriously good.
Don't forget as a solo traveller you will almost certainly have to pay a single supplement for May and June... to avoid that, you can travel roughly from November through March.
Thanks Roger. Are you willing to give me 2-3 locations with best experiences....viewing ,guides, and lodging not considering cost? Great guides are so important to the experience. I don't have the need to hop around a lot as I prefer a more immersive several days vs switching camps every 2 days... Im considering 6-8 days in camps. I looked at Wilderness and a couple looked good to me . I prefer smaller camps with some solitude where I can drink my coffee in the morning and see/hear animals/birds. vs. humans. From what Im reading I think private concessions vs in the parks would suit me well. I may skip Victoria Falls and focus my spending on best locations in Botswana . Ive only been on a few safaris and I made the mistake in Tanzania of staying in the company owned camps which were nice, but they weren't situated properly for the time of year. Sadly, I researched and they weren't forthcoming regarding precise locations. Don't want to make that mistake again...each trip is a learning experience. Thank you
Actually here in Botswana, most camps are owned by companies such as Wilderness, Kwando and Natural Selection's etc... so they have very good private concession areas. They actually are the places to go to.
If you are not overly concerned about price (perhaps without going crazy with 5 star), then perhaps take it from a perspective of purely the best areas... you can section it like this:
Makgadigadi Salt Plans... the best reasonably priced camp is Camp Kalahari.... it's right on the edge of Ntwetwe Pan the size of Switzerland.
______________________
For the Okavango you have quite a wide choice really but it can be split up with south and north Okavango...
South Okavango:
Wilderness Chitabe and Qorokwe
Kwando Safaris Pom Pom
Machaba Safaris Kiri or Gomoti Plains
_________________
North Okavango
Wilderness Little Vumbura
Great Plains Okavango Explorers
Kwando Safaris Kwara, Splash or 4Rivers
Natural Selections Sable Alley
--------------------------
Linyanti area for its vastness and superb Wildlife
Kwando Safaris Lebala or Lagoon
Great Plains Selinda Explorers
All the above are really very good 4 star lodges in the very best wildlife areas, and there are more as well... just talk to a good operator who knows their stuff and can guide you in the right direction.
I think if you only have 6 days I would skip Makgadikgadi and go to two lodges in the Okavango and Linyanti...
If it's 8 days it's possible to do one lodge each in Makgadikgadi, Okavango and Linyanti.... or a lodge in south and north Okavango plus a lodge in Linyanti.
Thank you so much Roger! You've givien me fantastic insights. Looks like I need to expand my trip length to do this right. I can't thank you enough. I will be looking for your website as I narrow travel dates, trip length, etc. Best wishes
