The Leeds & Liverpool Canal

The canal itself is Britain’s longest, at 127 miles, and was originally used for transporting coal, stone, cloth, and other cargo after its completion in 1816.

Of course, the canal’s busy industrial heyday has now passed, but the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is still enjoyed by thousands as a brilliant way of exploring the area, reliving the past, and relaxing as the world passes by.

About Skipton, England

Skipton is the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and was voted the best place to live in the U.K. in 2014. It’s a wonderful historic market town situated in North Yorkshire, right in the heart of beautiful scenery.

It’s not hard to see why Skipton is such a popular tourist destination, with the superbly preserved 900-year old medieval Skipton Castle, famous open-air Skipton market, spectacular limestone cliffs at Malham to the west, celebrated beauty of Bolton Abbey to the east, and of course the Leeds and Liverpool Canal passing right through the centre.

Yorkshire Canals

Ratty may not have been a Yorkshire lad, but he was right: there's nothing to beat messing about on boats. And the joy of canal boating is that you don't have to learn complicated things like sailing or navigation - you can start enjoying yourself straight away.

Boating holiday on Yorkshire canals

Boating holidays

The Yorkshire canals were made for enjoyment - well of course they weren't, they were for carrying coal and grain and wool in barges - but folk two centuries ago knew how to build to last, and today's lot know a good thing when they see it. So all around more people are finding more ways to use the canals, and boating holidays are one of the best. Take your accommodation with you in a snug, cleverly planned narrow boat and in the words of Arthur Daley, the world is your lobster.

Explore the Pennine canals

  • High above the roof tops or under the hills in tunnels; alongside tumbling streams or through buzzing city centres: there's always something new round every corner. The Pennine canals have an up and at 'em quality that's still reflected in the attitudes of Yorkshire people.
  • These days you can still see people working by the canal (the best holiday occupation!) but the grimy mills have long since been turned into sought-after flats and offices.
  • The best things about a Yorkshire boating holiday are the companionship of your crew, the friendly locals, the stunning scenery, your charming narrowboat (or barge), the amazing pubs and the sheer improbability of arriving in a new place by water - and not having to find somewhere to park the car.

Enjoy this site, and enjoy planning a fantastic Yorkshire canal holiday.

Justin Spike, AP Reporter

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Police say two people have died and five are missing following a boat collision on the Danube River in Hungary.

Hungarian police received a report late Saturday night that a man had been found with a head injury on the shore of the Danube near the town of Veroce, around 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the capital, Budapest. The bodies of a man and a woman were later discovered nearby.

Hours after police began their search, they discovered a damaged boat in the water, which they towed to shore. They are still searching for five adults — three men and two women — who they believe were on the boat.

Police said they determined that a river cruise boat had been in the area at the time of the accident. They stopped a cruise boat with a damaged hull near the town of Komarom, more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) further upriver.

Hungarian public television station M1 reported that the cruise boat, Heidelberg, is a 109-meter (357-foot) Swiss craft that can accommodate 110 people. No passengers on that boat sustained injuries, M1 said.

The Danube at Veroce is roughly 1,500 feet (460 meters) wide and is in the center of an area called the Danube Bend where the river makes a sweeping, nearly 90-degree turn to the south. The area is a popular recreational and boating destination and is on a route often used by cruise boats between Budapest and the Austrian capital, Vienna, some 140 miles (230 kilometers) upriver.

A man injured in a bus accident is brought to a hospital in Jammu, India, Thursday, May 30, 2024. The accident took place in the Jammu region on Thursday when a bus skidded off a highway and plunged 150 feet (45.7 meters) into a gorge, killing at least 21 people, government officials said. (AP Photo)

The deadly accident comes five years after at least 27 people were killed in Budapest when a river cruise boat collided with a smaller tourist vessel , sinking it in seconds.

The tourist boat Hableany, carrying 35 people who were mostly South Korean tourists, was overtaken from behind by the much larger cruise boat, Viking Sigyn, beneath Budapest’s Margit Bridge, in May 2019.

The Ukrainian captain of the Viking Sigyn was last year found guilty of negligence leading to a fatal mass catastrophe and sentenced to five years and six months in prison. He has appealed the decision.

Police on Sunday said they have initiated criminal proceedings against an unknown perpetrator on suspicion of endangering water transport and causing the death of several people.

A spokesperson for the Directorate General for Disaster Management told Hungarian news agency MTI that a group of nearly 90 people from several regional disaster management agencies were conducting the search for the missing from the land, water and sky.

Twelve boats and three drones are involved in the search, and two rescue divers are also involved, Imre Doka said.

I Survived a Fatal Ferry Sinking in the Bahamas. Why I’d Get on the Same Boat Tomorrow

"We looked over the edge and that's when we saw the water starting to go into the ferry"

Kelly and Chad Schissel of Platteville, Wisconsin, were on the last day of their vacation in the Bahamas on Nov. 14, 2023, when a boat carrying them and about 100 passengers to a private island sank.

A 74-year-old woman died following the capsizing but everyone else, including the Schissels, survived.

Here, Kelly, who posted footage from the dramatic incident that went later viral on TikTok , shares her story with PEOPLE’s David Chiu, in her own words.

It was a really nice day. We had all gotten on a double-decker ferry to Blue Lagoon Island and the ride was a little bumpy but no different from being on any boat in the water.

We were having fun and listening to music, but then we suddenly lurched forward. We just thought, "Okay, whatever," until we stayed leaning forward. Then one of the crew members from the bottom level came upstairs crying and freaking out and grabbed herself a life jacket.

We looked over the edge and that's when we saw the water starting to go into the ferry.

After getting life jackets of our own, we sat there waiting for staff to tell us what to do, but they never did. Eventually, it got to the point the boat was tipping so much that we just started jumping out.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

There were babies being nursed on that boat ride all the way to 90 year olds, and everyone in between. Some people knew how to swim, but some didn't.

There was a fisherman's boat that happened to go by and since I'm a good swimmer, I was able to reach it, although it wasn't easy by any means.

When I got into the boat, everybody looked the same with the orange life jackets on and I couldn't find my husband. Then I realized we had gotten separated.

He has a defibrillator, so I wondered, “If he gets shocked from the stress of this, what happens?” Still, although he's not the best swimmer, and had recently undergone reconstructive surgery on his ankle, I thought he should be okay.

Related: I Was Internally Decapitated After a Motorcycle Crash. This Is My New Normal

Then someone from the fisherman’s boat said, "We can't fit anybody else in here." I replied, "Well, go drop us off [at Blue Lagoon Island] and come back out."

At that point, another double-decker ferry showed up and fortunately, that's where Chad ended up.

When Chad arrived [on land after being separated] and saw me standing there on the dock, he started crying because he was relieved I was okay.

Once everybody got to land, we were all directed to this one small area of the island where we could be secluded from everybody else. We were over there for probably an hour or two because they wanted to double count, triple count and everything. [The island’s staff] offered everybody shirts and shoes because a lot of us lost all our stuff in the water.

After that, they said, "Okay, everybody has to get on a boat that looks exactly the same as the one that just sank and go back [to the cruise ship]." I asked, "Do we have the option to stay if we want to? We already made it here." But they said no.

We got loaded right onto another boat. There were kids crying, "I don't want to sink again. I don't want to go swimming," so we tired to calm them down. A lot of adults were even wearing life jackets on the way back. My husband asked if I wanted to, but I said, "There is no way they're going to sink two boats with the same group of people. They're going to go 2 miles an hour the whole way back. We'll be fine."

Once back on Nassau, Chad and I just walked around for a little bit and tried to enjoy the rest of the day.

Related: I Survived a Plane Crash That Killed 137 Others, Including My Dad. That Was Just the Beginning. (Exclusive)

When we were still over in that secluded area of Blue Lagoon Island, we heard one person say a lady had died. And then someone replied, "Don't say that. You don't know that." When we eventually got back onto the cruise ship, I heard more people talking about it.

As it turned out, the woman, who was on the bottom level of the sunken ferry boat, had an oxygen tank and it got wet and stuck, so she ended up blacking out on the boat because of a lack of oxygen. Once they got her out, she was on a rescue boat that took her to the island. They were doing CPR, but they just couldn't bring her back.

Afterwards, we had to go to the customer service desk because my husband lost his key card, which we swipe for food, drinks and to get into our room. We were also supposed to fill out a form for everything damaged or lost. They did refund our cruise. They sent us an email giving us an update on that after we were back on land.

To our knowledge, Royal Caribbean is still investigating everything. We haven’t been told officially what caused the accident. I think the captain just turned in too fast and with the choppy waters, it just filled up too much.

[Royal Caribbean referred PEOPLE's questions to officials on Blue Lagoon Island, whom Royal Caribbean said operated the tour. Blue Lagoon did not respond.]

I've seen so many things. I used to work at a prison and I’ve seen so many different car accidents — and been in a few myself. I swear this stuff happens to me all the time, which is why I was like, "Chad, I'm going to take a video because nobody's ever going to believe me that this happened."

I think the TikTok video is at 27.2 million right now for views. I thought it would be a big story, but I didn't know it would be that big.

A lot of people ask me, “Would I ever even go on another boat again?” And I'm like, "Yeah. I would even take the same exact boat that we used and go back to that same exact place. Just give me a different [ferry boat] crew because they didn't know what was going on."

And my advice is that when they tell you how to put on life jackets and what to do if there is an emergency, at least pay attention and have an exit plan in mind.

Cruise captain detained after ship collides with motor boat on Danube River, kills 2

BUDAPEST - Hungary has detained the captain of a Swiss-based cruise ship, Heidelberg, involved in a collision with a small motor boat on the Danube River  late on Saturday that killed two people, with five others still missing, police said on Monday.

The accident was reported on Saturday night after a 35-year-old man was found with a bleeding head wound near a main road by the river near Veroce, 55 km (34 miles) north of the capital Budapest.

The body of a man was recovered downstream south of Veroce, while a woman's body was found further downstream near a bridge on the northern outskirts of Budapest, where police also recovered the damaged motor boat.

Hungarian police said the cruise ship captain was a Czech national and that they had interviewed and detained him on suspicion of multiple offences, including failing to stop and provide help after an accident.

"Based on the suspicion of police, the captain did not alert his crew after the accident, did not follow provisions of the rescue protocol and took no action whatsoever to save the persons afflicted," police said in a statement.

Police have questioned 25 people as witnesses, including the cruise ship's crew, tourists on board and others.

A search continued on Monday for the five missing people, all of whom were in the motor boat, including an 18-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man.

On Sunday, a Reuters news team saw the ship moored in the northern Danube river town of Komarom, upstream from the site of the collision, with large scratches visible on the bow.

A group of Chinese tourists disembarked on Sunday afternoon. One of them told Reuters he had not been aware of any accident at the time.

He fell ill on a cruise. Before he boarded the rescue boat, they handed him the bill.

By Bram Sable-Smith

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 9:41 AM EDT / KFF Health News

Vincent Wasney and his fiancée, Sarah Eberlein, had never visited the ocean. They'd never even been on a plane. But when they bought their first home in Saginaw, Michigan, in 2018, their real estate agent gifted them tickets for a Royal Caribbean cruise.

After two years of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, they set sail in December 2022.

The couple chose a cruise destined for the Bahamas in part because it included a trip to CocoCay, a private island accessible to Royal Caribbean passengers that featured a water park, balloon rides and an excursion swimming with pigs.

It was on that day on CocoCay when Wasney, 31, started feeling off, he said.

The next morning, as the couple made plans in their cabin for the last full day of the trip, Wasney made a pained noise. Eberlein saw him having a seizure in bed, with blood coming out of his mouth from biting his tongue. She opened their door to find help and happened upon another guest, who roused his wife, an emergency room physician.

Wasney was able to climb into a wheelchair brought by the ship's medical crew to take him down to the medical facility, where he was given anticonvulsants and fluids and monitored before being released.

Wasney had had seizures in the past, starting about 10 years ago, but it had been a while since his last one. Imaging back then showed no tumors, and doctors concluded he was likely epileptic, he said. He took medicine initially, but after two years without another seizure, he said, his doctors took him off the medicine to avoid liver damage.

may-botm-cruise-01.jpg

Wasney had a second seizure on the ship a few hours later, back in his cabin. This time he stopped breathing, and Eberlein remembered his lips being so purple, they almost looked black. Again, she ran to find help but, in her haste, locked herself out. By the time the ship's medical team got into the cabin, Wasney was breathing again but had broken blood vessels along his chest and neck that he later said resembled tiger stripes.

Wasney was in the ship's medical center when he had a third seizure — a grand mal, which typically causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. By then, the ship was close enough to port that Wasney could be evacuated by rescue boat. He was put on a stretcher to be lowered by ropes off the side of the ship, with Eberlein climbing down a rope ladder to join him.

But before they disembarked, the bill came.

The Patient: Vincent Wasney, 31, who was uninsured at the time.

Medical Services: General and enhanced observation, a blood test, anticonvulsant medicine, and a fee for services performed outside the medical facility.

Service Provider: Independence of the Seas Medical Center, the on-ship medical facility on the cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International .

Total Bill: $2,500.22.

What Gives: As part of Royal Caribbean's guest terms , cruise passengers "agree to pay in full" all expenses incurred on board by the end of the cruise, including those related to medical care. In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Wasney said he was surprised to learn that, along with other charges like wireless internet, Royal Caribbean required he pay his medical bills before exiting the ship — even though he was being evacuated urgently.

"Are we being held hostage at this point?" Eberlein remembered asking. "Because, obviously, if he's had three seizures in 10 hours, it's an issue."

Wasney said he has little memory of being on the ship after his first seizure — seizures often leave victims groggy and disoriented for a few hours afterward.

But he certainly remembers being shown a bill, the bulk of which was the $2,500.22 in medical charges, while waiting for the rescue boat.

Still groggy, Wasney recalled saying he couldn't afford that and a cruise employee responding: "How much can you pay?"

They drained their bank accounts, including money saved for their next house payment, and maxed out Wasney's credit card but were still about $1,000 short, he said.

Ultimately, they were allowed to leave the ship. He later learned his card was overdrafted to cover the shortfall, he said. Once on land, in Florida, Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

He still isn't entirely sure what caused the seizures.

On the ship he was told it could have been extreme dehydration — and he said he does remember being extra thirsty on CocoCay. He also has mused whether trying escargot for the first time the night before could have played a role. Eberlein's mother is convinced the episode was connected to swimming with pigs, he said. And not to be discounted, Eberlein accidentally broke a pocket mirror three days before their trip.

Wasney, who works in a stone shop, was uninsured when they set sail. He said that one month before they embarked on their voyage, he finally felt he could afford the health plan offered through his employer and signed up, but the plan didn't start until January 2023, after their return.

They also lacked travel insurance. As inexperienced travelers, Wasney said, they thought it was for lost luggage and canceled trips, not unexpected medical expenses. And because the cruise was a gift, they were never prompted to buy coverage, which often happens when tickets are purchased.

may-botm-cruise-04.jpg

The Resolution: Wasney said the couple returned to Saginaw with essentially no money in their bank account, several thousand dollars of medical debt, and no idea how they would cover their mortgage payment. Because he was uninsured at the time of the cruise, Wasney did not try to collect reimbursement for the cruise bill from his new health plan when his coverage began weeks later.

The couple set up payment plans to cover the medical bills for Wasney's care after leaving the ship: one each with two doctors he saw at Broward Health, who billed separately from the hospital, and one with the ambulance company. He also made payments on a bill with Broward Health itself. Those plans do not charge interest.

But Broward Health said Wasney missed two payments to the hospital, and that bill was ultimately sent to collections.

In a statement, Broward Health spokesperson Nina Levine said Wasney's bill was reduced by 73% because he was uninsured.

"We do everything in our power to provide the best care with the least financial impact, but also cannot stress enough the importance of taking advantage of private and Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, as well as travel insurance, to lower risks associated with unplanned medical issues," she said.

The couple was able to make their house payment with $2,690 they raised through a GoFundMe campaign that Wasney set up. Wasney said a lot of that help came from family as well as friends he met playing disc golf, a sport he picked up during the pandemic.

"A bunch of people came through for us," Wasney said, still moved to tears by the generosity. "But there's still the hospital bill."

The Takeaway: Billing practices differ by cruise line, but Joe Scott , chair of the cruise ship medicine section of the American College of Emergency Physicians, said medical charges are typically added to a cruise passenger's onboard account, which must be paid before leaving the ship. Individuals can then submit receipts to their insurers for possible reimbursement.

He recommended that those planning to take a cruise purchase travel insurance that specifically covers their trips. "This will facilitate reimbursement if they do incur charges and potentially cover a costly medical evacuation if needed," Scott said.

Royal Caribbean suggests that passengers who receive onboard care submit their paid bills to their health insurer for possible reimbursement. Many health plans do not cover medical services received on cruise ships, however. Medicare will sometimes cover medically necessary health care services on cruise ships, but not if the ship is more than six hours away from a U.S. port.

Travel insurance can be designed to address lots of out-of-town mishaps , like lost baggage or even transportation and lodging for a loved one to visit if a traveler is hospitalized.

Travel medical insurance, as well as plans that offer "emergency evacuation and repatriation," are two types that can specifically assist with medical emergencies. Such plans can be purchased individually. Credit cards may offer travel medical insurance among their benefits, as well.

But travel insurance plans come with limitations. For instance, they may not cover care associated with preexisting conditions or what the plans consider "risky" activities, such as rock climbing. Some plans also require that travelers file first with their primary health insurance before seeking reimbursement from travel insurance.

As with other insurance, be sure to read the fine print and understand how reimbursement works.

Wasney said that's what they plan to do before their next Royal Caribbean cruise. They'd like to go back to the Bahamas on basically the same trip, he said — there's a lot about CocoCay they didn't get to explore.
