Essential Travel Tips for Packing Dresses

Many fitness and outdoor brands are also starting to make lifestyle lines so you can have stylish clothes that also perform well. Sometimes, you must dig through all the items that scream outdoorsy to find the gems.

We reached out to the major travel and outdoor brands on the market (including Adventure Dress, Anatomie, Fig Clothing, Helene Clarkson, prAna, Rec Room, Toad&Co) to identify their top sellers and then cross-referenced it with numerous travel sites, blogs, and globetrotting friends.

None required inclusion, and we returned any dresses that did not fit or travel well.

Many of these brands are pricier because they use performance fabrics and care more about fair trade and sustainability. But if you’re looking for mid to lower-price range dresses, we included those too.

Before we get into my top choices for dresses, here are some things I’m looking for when searching for the best travel dresses.

  • Comfort  – Though I might carry one fancier dress for a special occasion, most of the clothes I travel with are comfy chic.
  • Versatility  – can be dressed up or down. It’s even better if it’s convertible clothing or a 2-piece dress that makes it easy to mix and match. Usually, convertible clothing can be pretty ugly, but occasionally, you find a gem.
  • Wrinkle Free  – I don’t want to spend part of my trip ironing clothes.
  • Packable  – Light and easy to pack.
  • Performance  – Sweat-wicking or quick drying is icing on the cake. If the dress looks too sporty, though, it’s not a must.
  • Rompers and Jumpsuits? – If you’re outdoors all day with no bathroom, you will not want to strip naked. Trust me, this has happened to me, and it was uncomfortable.

Note: You know your body best and what style looks best on you. I’m generally a size 0 petite. If there’s no petite size, I accept that minis will look like midis, and midis will look like maxis on me.

The Best Travel Dresses in 2024

1. petal tunic dress (on sale $19 from $27) – most affordable →.

Activities:  Urban exploration. Sizing:  XS in Yellow (runs large on me)

It has low-quality fabric , but I’ve worn it for several years, and it holds up better than other fast fashion pieces I’ve owned. It’s mostly for city travel, but I’ve also worn this as a swimsuit cover-up and went SUPing.

The best part is that it’s affordable , and you can go on any adventure without feeling bad that you’ll mess it up .

  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down.
  • Can machine wash cold and tumble dry low.
  • Affordable.
  • Will wrinkle
  • Fabric is not comfortable. It has some stretch but isn’t very soft.
  • Low-quality fabric with a “plasticky” feel, but it’s sewn together well.

2. Free Fly Apparel Heritage Dress ($88) – Most Comfortable Travel Dress →

Activities:  Urban exploration. Materials: 55% Cotton | 45% Viscose from Bamboo Sizing:  XS in Heather Black (true to size but long on me)

This is by far the most comfortable dress I own. Comfortable clothes tend to look slouchier, but this one, surprisingly, is more flattering than I expected. It’s easy to throw on during hot summer days, and luckily, their midi dress hits right at maxi length for me.

I also like layering over this with a sweater during the winter. Also, I must have a favorite pose right now. lol

  • Comfortable and stretchy
  • Soft Fabric
  • UPF 50+ sun protection
  • Flattering fit; not too loose or tight
  • Side slits for easy movement
  • Hang dry recommended
  • Not as many color options

3. Encircled 3-piece Reversible Dressy Knit Dress + Jumpsuit (on Sale $188 from $389) →

Activities:  Urban exploration. Materials: Rayon from Bamboo, Spandex Rib Knit Sizing:  XS in Martini Olive (true to size)

I love this 3-piece set , which can be worn four ways. The top is reversible , with a boat neck on one side and a scoop neck on the other. Then you can pair it with their skirt or their wide-leg pants . My biggest complaint is that the skirt has no pockets.

  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down across multiple seasons.
  • Reversible top .
  • Breathable fabric.
  • Sustainably sourced. Certified B-Corp.
  • Sustainable packaging.
  • Full bra coverage straps.
  • Can machine wash.
  • Pockets on the wide-leg pants .
  • Women-owned, women-run.
  • Pricier, but I don’t mind paying more for sustainable, ethically-made clothes.
  • In some light, you can see unflattering lines created by the tank.
  • Must lay flat to dry (They suggest you always line dry. Did you know air drying can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 2400 lbs a year?).
  • No pockets on the skirt .
  • Will wrinkle.

4. Prana Luxara Dress (On sale $59 from $119) – Best Activewear Dress for Travel →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Outdoor Adventures in Heat, Hot Yoga Material:  76% Recycled Nylon, 24 Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Spiced (true to size on me)

This is an excellent activewear dress, especially for warm-weather destinations like Las Vegas! The Luxara is Prana’s lightest material and is perfect for hiking in the heat. It fits like a hug and is more comfortable than my Girlfriend Collective Lola Dress, my other active dress with a built-in shorty.

  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Moisture wicking and Quick Dry
  • UPF Sun Protection
  • Stretchy and comfortable
  • Built-in shorts
  • Interior pocket in shorts
  • Some recycled materials
  • Only one pocket
  • Some reviews mention it’s too short, but it’s a great length for me.

5. Prana Cozy Up Bayjour Dress (Out of Stock) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Beach, Soft Adventures Material:  55% Hemp | 25% Recycled Polyester | TENCEL™ Lyocell Size Worn:  XS in Heather Grey (true to size)

I loved all my previous Prana dresses (now discontinued), so I knew I would love the Cozy Up Bayjour Dress. It is soft and comfortable , can be dressed up or down , and  pockets  are always a plus. I’ll later post up all the mixing and matching I can do with my wardrobe and this dress.

  • Soft fabric
  • Lightweight than most dresses, but on this list, it’s one of the heavier fabrics.
  • Flattering shape with rib knit tank bodice
  • Bacteria resistant
  • Quick drying
  • Versatile and can be dressed up or down
  • On-seam pockets
  • Some recycled fibers and eco-friendly materials
  • Other reviewers mention the fabric is heavier than expected, and the black color looks faded.
  • The waistline could be higher to be more flattering on petite frames. It’s better for average or taller heights.

6. Toad and co Jumper ($125) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration Material:  100% Organic Cotton Size Worn:  XS in Honey Brown (fits large on me)

I love this jumper for travel days when I have multiple activities requiring multiple outfits. Instead of bringing two outfits per day, I can throw this over the same top, which makes for an easy day-to-night transition. I did this twice on our Washington trip , where I had to hike during the day but had more formal dinners later.

  • Easy to throw on.
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Lots of pockets (one zippered pocket for valuables)
  • Can machine wash
  • Oeko-tex standard
  • Shipped in a recyclable paper sleeve.
  • Joy-backed guarantee. You can return it within 90 days if you don’t get a compliment within three wearings or it doesn’t bring you joy.
  • Runs large if you’re petite, but I don’t mind wearing it looser.

7. Arc’teryx Contenta Dress (Out of Stock) →

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Outdoor Adventures Material:  100% recycled Diem™ polyester Size Worn:  XS in Light Immersion (true to size on me)

They made a newer version of this dress with a looser silhouette and a scooped neckline. Meanwhile, I still have the older version.

This dress is the  most lightweight option  on here and feels the most breezy out of all the dresses. I especially gravitate towards it on hot summer days (we have plenty of them in Vegas).

  • Lightweight
  • Anti-wrinkle
  • Can wear it two ways.
  • Materials meet the Bluesign criteria for sustainability.
  • The elastic waistband inside is annoying to cinch the waist (the newer version has it on the outside).

8. Anatomie Taya Racerback Maxi Dress (On Sale $78 From $168) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, Beach, Nicer Dinners, Work trips Material:  95% Viscose / 5% Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Navy (true to size on me other than length)

Let me start by saying I’m a big fan of Anatomie’s line of travel clothes. Everything is  high quality . I own two pairs of Skylar Pants in black and gray because they’re perfect for flying, and now this dress!

The performance fabric keeps you comfortable, and the mesh panel makes it perfect for warm-weather travel.

  • Stretchy, Relaxed fit
  • Flattering shape
  • I had to hem it since there are no petite sizes

9. Helene Clarkson Sabi Reversible Halter Dress (on sale $94 from $189) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, Work travel Material:  95% polyester, 5% spandex Size Worn:   XS in teal  (true to size on me)

The material is so soft and comfortable that I can practically  sleep in it ! What initially drew me to this dress was that it’s  reversible , and you can wear it as a mock-neck halter style or a v-neck. Also, since the fabric is so thin, you can wear it as a top with baggier bottoms like joggers.

  • Wrinkle Free
  • Reversible – front is a pleated mock neck, and the back is a relaxed v-neck. I typically only wear it on the mock neck side, though.
  • Hang to dry
  • It’s easy to snag, so be careful around sharp objects or velcro.

10. Bluffworks Threshold Tie Waist T-Shirt Dress (On sale $46 from $78) →

Activities:  Urban exploration Material:  66% Polyester, 29% Lyocell, 5% elastane Size Worn:  XS Petite in Deep Maroon (runs large on me)

Jacob has been wearing Bluffworks clothes for years, and now that they have started carrying women’s clothes, I finally got to check out one of their dresses. Their threshold tie waist t-shirt dress uses a super soft fabric that feels like your old favorite tee. The fit runs a half-size large on me in XS, their smallest size, but most of their reviews say it fits true to size.

  • Comfy, soft fabric.
  • Machine washable
  • Odor resistant
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Moisture wicking/quick drying
  • 4 total pockets (2 on interior)
  • It fits loose on me and isn’t flattering on the side you don’t tie. It probably looks better on you if it fits more snugly.

11. Girlfriend Collective – Lola V-neck Dress (on sale $88) →

Activities:  Hiking, Climbing, Urban exploration. Material:  90% RPET and 10% spandex Size Worn:  XS in alpine (true to size on me)

The Lola V-Neck is perfect for any activity. With its  built-in shorts , you can hike or climb without worrying about flashing people. They make them out of  90% recycled plastic bottles  (RPET).

Plus, they have their  ReGirlfriend recycling program , where they turn your dress into future clothes.

It was also perfect for travel with a  diverse range of activities . We zip-lined in the morning before exploring the city, and the built-in shorts made that all possible.

Girlfriend Collective sent me two dresses to showcase on  my climbing account , but I loved them so much that I included them here.

  • Comfortable fabric.
  • Flattering shape with compression around the waist and hips.
  • Built-in bra.
  • Built-in shorts.
  • Pockets on inner shorts.
  • Sweat-wicking.
  • Ultra-lightweight.
  • Sustainably made from 90% recycled plastic bottles, and they have a recycle program called ReGirlfriend.
  • Must be hang-dried.
  • Doesn’t hide stiff nips, and if you’re already flat, it flattens you more.
  • Harder to take on and off to go to the bathroom.
  • Looks more sporty.

Activities:  Urban Exploration, Beach, Soft Adventures Material:  48% TENCEL™ Lyocell | 48% Organic Cotton | 4% Elastane Size Worn:  XS in Salt (runs large on me)

The Marley Tiered dress is  comfortable,  versatile, and perfect for hot summers. It’s easy to throw on whether lounging at home or exploring the city.

Toad and Co values  sustainability , and I thought it was cute that even their tags are made to be reusable as a coaster.

  • Loose, flowy silhouette
  • Bra-friendly coverage
  • Made with eco-friendly fibers and packaging
  • Joy-backed guarantee
  • The bust runs large for me since I’m petite and flat-chested.

13. Fig CLothing Hampton Dress (On sale $72 from $89) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, soft adventure Material:  100% Cotton (Honeycomb terry) Size Worn:  XS in Terracotta Stripe (true to size on me)

Fig makes practical travel clothes that make no sacrifice on style, and the Hampton dress has been the perfect addition to my capsule wardrobe. I love the simple design and the in-seam pockets.

  • Soft on skin
  • Comfortable
  • UPF 25 solar protection
  • In-seam pockets
  • Quality fabric
  • Heavier than my other travel dresses because of its thicker fabric

14. Milumia Button Up Split Floral Print Flowy Party Maxi Dress ($44) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, beach

I wear an XS in Beige Yellow, but the dress runs big and fits loose on me (I’m a petite XS, sometimes XXS).

The fit isn’t perfect on me, but it still looks great for photos (see photo below). I have other travel bloggers friends with this same dress who own it in multiple colors. If it fits you, it’s a fan favorite.

  • Comfortable, soft fabric
  • Machine Washable
  • Must be line-dried
  • Fits baggy on me.

15. Encircled Chrysalis Cardi Dress ($215) →

Activities:  Urban exploration, in flight.

I learned about Encircled and had the Chrysalis Cardi back in 2015. I love how this wrap dress can be worn in 8+ different ways (see  all the ways here ).

  • Premium quality and made to last
  • Can be worn 8+ different ways
  • Sustainability – They use the most natural and sustainable fabrics available and are a Certified B Corp and Oeko Tex 100 Certified
  • Heavy Fabric
  • Will Wrinkle
  • Must be line-dried and takes a while to dry, but I think the fabric has since changed.
  • Not all the ways have a flattering fit.

encircled chrysalis cardi

Many of my favorite dresses are discontinued now. It’s worth noting that some travel apparel brands that shut down include Rec Room, Vacaystyle, and the Adventure Dress (the website is still there, but all their dresses have been sold out for several years).

Do you own any of these?

  • The Undress  – the dress that lets you undress anywhere.
  • Uniqlo A-line Mini Bra Dress  – love when the bra is built in. So comfy.
  • Toad & Co Camp-co Romper – as long as you don’t mind traveling in a romper. It feels like linen but has a cleaner footprint.

If you want to avoid wrinkles, use these packing tips:

  • Don’t overpack.
  • Lay the dress flat inside a plastic dry cleaning bag. Fold it in its natural shape.
  • Pack them last or on top of everything else.
  • Roll softer garments.
  • Use a  mini travel steamer .
  • If your clothes are wrinkled, hang them in the bathroom while you take a steamy hot shower.

What do you think of these dresses? Which of them would you most likely wear? Have you tried any travel dresses (the ones are specifically made for travel)?

✔️ Comfort: Relaxation is synonymous with most trips and your clothing should reflect that same vibe. Le Blanc says comfortability should be the top priority when selecting these pieces. “The most important thing when choosing a great travel dress is that you focus on something you feel good in. You want a dress that is comfortable and breathable,” she says. Being uncomfortable is the antithesis of a good time and nobody wants to experience that while traveling. “It should fit your body, so you feel confident,” adds Le Blanc.

✔️ Versatility: Switching things up should be a cinch with travel dresses. “Your dress should be versatile and enhance your trip — it should be a piece that you can throw on for the beach or dress up for dinner,” Le Blanc says.

✔️ Material: Le Blanc says sticking with breathable materials is a good choice. "Natural fabrics like cottons and linens are great for traveling because the fabrics are elevated and keep you cool and let heat easily leave your body."

Unless you're the kind of person who intentionally plans on taking a pre-flight #OOTD at the airport (so that you can post on the 'gram before takeoff, of course), figuring out a travel look is often an afterthought. We're usually pouring all our attention and energy into curating the best 'fits to wear once we reach our final destination! But when it's actually time to start the trek, you're probably frantically rummaging through your closet hoping to find something that's both travel appropriate and stylish. More often than not, that results in an ensemble that's comfy, sure, but nowhere near as chic as what's packed away in that carry-on.

Whether you're traveling by bus, train, car, boat, plane, or any other mode of land, sea, or air transport, we get how tough it can be to choose a gorge 'fit that's also extremely functional for the varied stages of the journey. Within the same hour, you could be hustling to the airport, sprinting through the terminal, sweating at the gate, and freezing once you've boarded. Or, you might find yourself uncomfortable as hell on a looong drive, regretting the decision to wear too-stiff jeans or a cute but itchy AF sweater. Don't stress: we've got ya covered! Ahead, we've curated the absolute best travel dresses to wear en route to your next trip. Why dresses, you might be wondering? Even if you swear by leggings and a tee whenever it's time to face that TSA line, hear us out: A dress that's cute and comfy is the ultimate one-piece foundation for hustling from point A to point B. It'll simplify getting dressed as you wrestle to get your suitcase zipped and check in for your flight, and is so easy to throw layers on when the A/C is blasting on your seat or peel off that scarf or hoodie the second you start to overheat at any point of the journey.

line

When shopping for travel dresses, consider these helpful factors to figure out the best 'fit for any and every trip:

  • This one kinda goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: What's the weather like wherever you're headed?
  • How long will you be traveling and what are your modes of transportation throughout the journey?
  • Will you have time for a 'fit change once you arrive? If so, how much time do you have? If not, what sort of dress (think: material, shape, and length) checks as many boxes as possible for traveling in, and once you get to your destination?

For me, it’s always been a challenge to pack a bag and choose just one or two dresses that will be versatile enough to wear in different types of weather and various occasions for a single trip.

In fact, one thing I never let myself do was explore the different types of cool travel dresses out there, for women on the go. I’ve always packed a patterned maxi dress, layered it with a jean jacket, and called it a day. But I could be doing better!

I’ve learned that there are travel dresses out there made by great brands that have invented fabrics that zap moisture and sweat, minimize odors (who doesn’t get stinky on a plane?) and come with pockets .

In the list that follows, I’ve picked a few of the best dresses on the market for women travelers, so that you don’t have to do the work! Let’s dig in.

Bluffworks Threshold T-Shirt Dress

If there was ever a T-shirt dress that really rocked my world, it’s this new one from Bluffworks , the brand that builds great travel clothes for women. In the past, I’ve found T-shirt dresses to hit the wrong places on my body, but this one is both flattering and comfy. Plus, it has hidden POCKETS!

best travel dress 2023

The Threshold T-shirt Dress is made from the Bluffworks proprietary Threshold fabric (I also have the Threshold tee). It works well on travel days.

My favorite part of the T-shirt dress is that it comes in petite sizing and I actually feel great in it. Regular dresses often hit my legs too far down and look like I am drowning. This dress comes in regular sizes by default, and if you’re short like I am, opt for petite sizes!

best travel dress 2023

I think this T-shirt travel dress is priced pretty affordably for all the versatility it provides. I could wear it from spring to fall, layered with scarves, cardigans or tights and boots for cool nights on a trip. In these photos, I’m wearing it with my Troubadour Momentum backpack .

Check out this stylish dress to wear on an upcoming trip!

Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress

If you’re taking a warm-weather trip that’s bound to get you into humidity, try out the Free Fly Women’s Breeze Dress . I own it in Baltic Amber and in size XS, and the feel of it is like nothing I’ve ever had in my closet before. It’s bouncy and soft on my torso and legs. Note: while the Heritage Midi Dress from Free Fly fits me great in the torso, this one is a bit big and looser.

This dress folds up small in a packing cube, and is made of a special material blend that’s meant to handle heat and humidity like a breeze . The best feature I found is the hidden zipper pocket in the right-side slash pocket. I use this for tiny things like coins or a key.

Is Free Fly worth it? See my Free Fly product experience review .

Free Fly Women's Breeze Dress

Embrace the breeze in this lightweight dress that handles heat and humidity.

Quince 100% European Linen Sleeveless Swing Dress

Everything from Quince has been so affordable, in my experience. I tried the Quince 100% European Linen Sleeveless Swing Dress and absolutely loved the classic summer style.

best travel dress 2023

The only thing about it to gripe about is that the buttons are a little hard to open, when you first get it. I opened one, and got it over my head, and then I kept that button open. I really like the colors that this dress comes in, and I chose Olive. The two pockets on the sides are perfect for sliding my hands into, and they are functional during travel.

I like the timeless chic style of this travel dress, and the side pockets.

Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress

I’m so glad that Public Rec has come out with some dresses! The cousin of the Public Rec Go-To Dress , the Go-To Tank Dress is a nice travel staple with a funky open back for style. It has a flirty fit and a top half that reminds me of the Public Rec muscle tank that I enjoy wearing as a travel shirt.

With a blend of Pima cotton and spandex, it’s an athletic fit and the material is durable. This one is great for travel in pretty hot temperatures and could be paired with my Public Rec Adapt Belt Bag .

best travel dress 2023

My tip about sizing: Public Rec typically runs “true to size,” in my experience, with their products like the Essential Tee, Luxe Fleece collection and joggers. The Go-To Tank Dress runs a bit wider than I’d like, so I have some fabric gaps at the side that will probably make this dress less of a “go” for me. Keep this in mind about your build if you like this dress, because it’s good for larger-chested women (proportionally) as well as women who might feel like they have more of a standard (non-petite) body type.

Keep it simple with the Public Rec Go-To Tank Dress, a chic travel dress.

Bluffworks Threshold Tie Waist T-Shirt Dress

The Threshold Tie-Waist T-Shirt Dress is the second travel dress from Bluffworks. It has a flattering look that is not too tight, and originally the tie-waist scared me off, but it works out really well. It can be worn in the front (my preference), or even the back. Check out the photos here of me modeling the six usable pockets.

best travel dress 2023

At an affordable price point for the quality you get with Bluffworks, I think this one’s an easy decision. This type of dress can be totally casual for a day to day while traveling, and would look nice as a base layer for more business casual outfits if you have that use during your trip.

This one differs from the Bluffworks original T-shirt dress because it has the nice touch of cuffed sleeves, and I like this a lot. One of the biggest benefits is that this tie-waist style is a classic, so if you put your budget toward a dress like this, it’ll last for years.

See why this travel dress makes a great wardrobe staple.

Free Fly Bamboo Heritage Midi Dress

I slid this Free Fly dress on when I got it. It’s called a “midi” dress because it is supposed to fall at the mid-calf, but for me, at 5’2,” the hemline falls at my ankles in size XS. Keep this in mind! I actually really like that the bamboo viscose fabric feels a little heavier than other dresses I’ve worn, becuase it doesn’t show underwear lines and I appreciate this.

The Heritage Midi Dress has UPF 50+ sun protection, and it is fitted at the top with a natural flow throughout the rest of the body. I like the flattering scoop neck and the hand pockets at the waist! It looks good with a jean jacket when I put on a layer for cooler evenings on a vacation.

Aviator Chambray Travel Dress

This long-sleeve denim-look travel dress from Aviator is a new one of my travel finds. It’s a sturdy chambray and I can dress it up with sandals in spring or boots in the fall. What stands out to me about this dress is of course, the pockets, which even have Aviator’s signature YKK zippers.

best travel dress 2023

This chambray dress has a waist tie for closure and flattery. For my Aviator dress, I took Aviator up on their FREE tailoring, and had it taken in at the shoulders and at the length because I’m petite. Now it fits great! Most women say it fits between “to size” and “on the big side.” So, you might want to size down.

I prefer to wear it with the sleeves folded up, as I’m not one for the long-sleeve look. For more photos, see my detailed Aviator Chambray Travel Dress review . My tip : This dress is currently being discontinued and is on “dead stock” only, so it’s discounted on Aviator’s website ! Most sizes are available, but note that it is Final Sale .

Icebreaker Women’s Merino Granary Sleeveless Dress

I learned about the Icebreaker brand because Dan really likes his Icebreaker merino wool crew sweatshirt . I was glad to find out that Icebreaker makes great women’s apparel in their signature merino wool blend.

Merino wool is one of the best materials for travel, because it’s soft and strong, as well as lightweight and fine. The Granary Sleeveless Dress is 100% merino wool and is a minimalist travel dress with a subtle cap sleeve and a modest knee length.

A dress like this would be good if you plan to take a trip that involves some sightseeing that requires modest dress, like religious temples or sacred places — think Israel or Sri Lanka .

best travel dress 2023

As for fit, it runs pretty long and overall, I think Icebreaker runs big in women’s sizes. If you are a pretty standard build and average height, you still might want to size down . I have Icebreaker’s merino tee for women, and that runs big, too. Check out my photos for a close-up on the fabric and for how small it folds up in your luggage!

Stay cool and comfortable with the Icebreaker Women's Merino Granary Sleeveless Dress, a versatile piece for any wardrobe.

Quince Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Mini Dress

I tested out Quince’s Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Mini Dress and was very happy with out comfortable it was. The tencel has a certain weight to it, which makes the dress hang off my body and not stick to my legs. That’s a plus.

best travel dress 2023

My favorite aspect of it is the flattering neckline. I find I have trouble finding necklines that make me feel confident, and this one has a great shape, with the scoop and straps. Being as short as I am, it ran longer on me than it looks on the models on the product pages. Another highlight: handy and functional slit pockets at the sides.

Quince Cotton Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Mini Dress

Travel in style with Quince's #1 best-selling travel dress.

Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress

I became familiar with Athleta via my Athleta leggings with pockets that I mention in my list of the best travel pants for women . They make dresses, too! The Elation V-Neck Hybrid Dress is a pretty and flattering summery dress that I can’t stop looking at because it’s so breezy and easy.

It’s an ultralightweight dress made of polyester and spandex that comes in inclusive sizes of XS to 3XL! It’s fitted at the torso and then flares out for keeping you cool.

Embrace comfort and elegance with the Athleta Elation V-Neck Dress, perfect for casual outings or dressier occasions.

Patagonia Regenerative Organic Certified™ Cotton Essential Dress

This long-sleeve casual dress from Patagonia caught my eye because it is super chill. And of course, I had to search for if it has pockets: it does! It has a totally relaxed fit, so think of pairing it with walking sneakers and a baseball cap. You could also wear it with leggings and boots in winter or fall.

As for specifics, this Patagonia travel dress is Fair Trade Certified™, and made from 100% Regenerative Organic Certified™ cotton. It has raglan-style sleeves, two slit pockets and that “Retro Fitz Roy Patagonia logo” that every traveler wants on their chest. What’s not to love?

Patagonia Cotton Essential Dress

This laid-back long-sleeve dress for chilled-out travelers has pockets and a cozy vibe.

tentree Arden Dress

The Arden Dress from tentree has pockets — can you believe it? This travel dress is a blend of Lyocell, recycled polyester and organic cotton that has a two-way stretch knit. For now, it comes in the “core color” of Meteorite Black.

I like the gathered neck, hand pockets, elastic gathered waist and sleeveless look. I’d wear this one in Central America or Southeast Asia, or a summer in Europe. This dress is specifically meant for summer, and for keeping you cool with the gentle fabric. Lastly, it’s easily machine washable.

Embrace comfort and sustainability with the tentree Arden Dress, crafted from recycled fabrics.

prAna Jewel Lake Summer Dress

prAna’s cool high-neck flare dress is stretchy with a detailed back. It’s the only one of its kind, in this entire list of travel dresses!

There are pockets in this travel dress, too (two hand slit pockets at the hips). It has a built-in shelf bra (with removable pads), so that you don’t need to wear one if you don’t need to! I also think it’s an ideal day-to-night dress to bring on a warm and tropical trip. In the black color, you could even dress it up a whole bit more.

This high-neck relaxed dress is made for warm-weather holiday breaks.

KUHL Vantage Dress

KUHL is an adventure and outdoors brand, so I was glad to see they have a dress available for women travelers. The Vantage dress comes in four bold colors, and is sized XS-XL.

As all KUHL products are created for being on the go and being active, the dress has moisture management, odor resistance, sun protection at UPF 50+ and a four-way fabric stretch. There are pockets right below the elastic waist!

This travel dress is fairly casual, so if your trip is active (I probably wouldn’t wear this dress for biking or climbing) like if you’re camping, doing a lot of walking or going on an easy hike, pack this dress in your bag.

Dress to impress with the KUHL Vantage Dress, a versatile piece that combines comfort with contemporary fashion.

REI Co-op Trailmade Dress

Zipper pocket alert: the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress has one, for three pockets in total. It’s a dress that was actually designed for women who love to hike and be outdoors, with UPF 50+ sun protection.

As for the fabric, the REI Trailmade Dress is made of a lightweight nylon/spandex blend with 2-way stretch. It’s quick-drying and moisture-wicking, making it the ultimate dress for “roughing it.”

REI makes a point that this dress is geared toward women of all sizes, as it comes in sizes XS to 3XL.

Travel in style and comfort with the REI Co-op Trailmade Dress, perfect for all types of trips.

Peruvian Connection Le Marais Dress

Probably the most elegant dress in the list, this summery travel dress has a beautifully flattering neckline and a flare hem that will look pretty in photos. It’s a blend of pima cotton and spandex, so it has a slight stretch in its softness. It’s perfect as a go-anywhere dress that’ll pack up into a compression cube and be ready to go.

Peruvian Connection is a company founded from the love of Peruvian textiles, evolving into a global company. The brand’s mission is to support Andean artisans with luxurious fibers and to provide well-paying job opportunities locally.

Travel elegantly in this timeless dress with pockets

Why should you trust me?

I’ve been traveling on my own since 2009, and I know what makes a good piece of clothing to have in my suitcase!

I’ve been through items that have broken or ripped during trips, as well as clothes that have shown sweat, haven’t washed easily and haven’t stood the test of time.

The garments I recommend in this list are clothes I have personally tested already, or ones I plan to wear, and I’m happy with how they look and how they feel.

Also, the brands listed are ones from which I already own other travel clothes (check out my list of the best women’s pants for travel , as well as the best women’s shirts for travel ).

On-Trend Winter Dresses to Keep You Warm This Season

Stylist-approved styles to leave heads turning all season long.

Styling Winter Dresses

Textured winter dresses, cozy knit dresses, lingerie-inspired dresses, structured dresses, maxi dresses, meet the expert.

Now that the days are significantly shorter, we all want to spend as little time getting dressed and as much time out and about as possible. So, naturally, when picking an outfit, it's easy to opt for a quick option like a dress, which simplifies your routine and looks effortlessly chic. But when looking for the best dresses for winter with which to restock your closet, it's best to understand which options suit the weather best, channel current trends, and are able to transition seamlessly from workday to nightlife.

Marissa Galante Frank , the fashion director at Bloomingdale’s, is an expert in dressing for any season, so I asked for her advice on how best to find and accessorize winter dresses. Below, her take on trending winter dress styles along with advice on how to style them. Your new favorite winter outfit awaits.

When wearing a dress, it's easy to throw one's hands up and consider oneself done. After all, we wear dresses because they're easy, right?

In reality, when opting for a dress, the accessorizing possibilities are endless. Frank notes that oversized winter coats , Mary Janes, and tights all look fabulous with winter dresses and channel a sense of "really polished femininity." Tights, in particular, look great with mini dresses and feed into this year's sheer trend, adding a bit of texture to an otherwise plain outfit.

Another method of accessorizing, she says, is to go for a monochromatic look, which she says is "a great way to feel put together, look chic, and again, have that 24-hour item," so you can go from works to dinner to drinks with ease. An example, she says, is wearing a slip dress with a same-colored sweater over it, which "goes back to that sort of texture play."

Finally, she calls the belt "a key accessory for the season," particularly when cinching the waist over a blazer dress, maxi dress, or pleated dress.

Incorporating texture into your outfit is a great way to keep things interesting, and Frank agrees wholeheartedly, citing a few textures that are particularly in style this season. One of them? Sequins , which have taken over runways over the past few months.

"We love sequins, right?" says Frank. "They're so fun, they're so festive, and I think that that's a great way to dress for the holidays." She also notes that lace, mesh, and velvet are classic looks for the holiday season, whether they're included in the design of your dress or channeled in your accessories.

And for those who are feeling particularly romantic this season, Frank recommends dresses with rosettes—a detail she says has been "everywhere" lately.

"We love them," she gushes. "They're so feminine and we just think that within dresses, this is a great new update and detail, and we feel like these are going to continue into 2024."

white dress with chiffon skirt, lace sleeves, and tweed breast

Sweater dresses are a natural go-to during long, cold winters, and Frank adds that they're an option "you can really wear all day long and really [lend themselves to] that 24 hour dressing." In terms of accessorizing this cozy option, she says, "you can layer them, of course, and I think that that's key in the winter months."

long beige sweater dress with side slit

"This season, something that is a major trend across dresses and beyond the ready-to-wear is lingerie dressing, so anything that really nods to that lingerie aesthetic," explains Frank. "So lace, sheerness, corset details, and, of course, the slip dress, which is such a big favorite."

More specifically, she calls slip dresses versatile and "key," noting that they're "always a chic option." She suggests "layering a blazer or a sweater over for the office with a chunky boot, and wearing them out at night," reiterating that they "can be dressed up and dressed down"—something that's essential for the woman who doesn't have the time (or purse space) for midday outfit changes.

Other lingerie-inspired looks include options that include lace or corset detailing, which can also be made versatile with layering.

midi slip dress

In contrast to lingerie dressing, Frank says that structured styles are also in vogue this winter, saying that "a big, boxy blazer" is an option that "feels very cool and effortless." Like the slip dress , it can be worn at work and then to late-night drinks, and can even be paired with the svelte slip dress for a balanced, versatile look.

black mini blazer dress

Frank also counts maxi-length dresses among the top trends this winter season.

"I think in the summer, the maxi dress is something that I feel like everyone's familiar with, but I think what's interesting this season is that this winter, the maxi dress is also really important," she says. "So whether that's in a slip or that's a sweater dress that you're belting, that's a great option for the winter season, because it's also a little bit warmer and little more comfortable, which is something that I feel like we all can appreciate." Plus, when the hem of your dress reaches your ankles or lower, you can relax and leave the tights at home.

What to wear in Russia

What to Wear in Russia

Top style tips for russia.

  • Russia is fairly conservative, and if you choose to wear bright colors – particularly in the winter months – you will stand out.
  • Jeans are always popular here and, teamed with lighter layers for the summer and warmer ones for the winter, will serve as a versatile base to your wardrobe.
  • Add in a smarter outfit for more formal occasions , such as the ballet or opera. Whilst it's not compulsory, the locals do dress up for these events and you'll feel more comfortable if you do the same.
  • The attitude towards wearing fur is very different in Russia compared to Western Europe. Fur is very common and relatively cheap, and you will see a lot of people wearing it.
  • If you are looking for a highly versatile travel jacket to bring along we recommend the  SCOTTeVEST  range. Their range of jackets have been specifically designed with traveling in mind and include RFID security (to protect your passport information), 23 secure pockets and personal connectivity integration.

Shoes to pack for Russia

  • If you're intending to see as many sites as possible during your trip (and there are a lot to see) you'll be doing a good deal of walking – so be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes . We love Hotter shoes , for total comfort along with style.

Pack for the weather

  • November, December, January, February and March are freezing so be ready to dress warmly. Our advice would be to pack warm layers.
  • For extra warmth pack some long thermal underwear – you'll be grateful you did.
  • light wool is a good choice to wear against your skin as it naturally helps to regulate your body temperature . It keeps you warm in the cold, wicks away moisture when it's hot, and doesn't retain odours – even after prolonged wear.
  • Muscovites wear a lot of fur in the winter – for a reason. Whether your preference is for fake or the real thing, you are well advised to have a very thick warm coat, gloves and scarf. A hat and/or ear muffs are also a very good idea. A furry lining or trim will keep you even cosier.
  • Wear really good boots with soft rubber soles . It's important that you get soft rubber soles because even medium soles get really hard in the freezing cold. Make sure too that they have large spaces between the tracks, or the snow will get stuck in them and make them very slippery.
  • Dressing in layers will help you with the temperature changes during the day, whatever time of year you visit.
  • Be sure to pack your swimwear if you want to join in the winter time ritual bathing in hot and cold pools, steam rooms and saunas.
  • We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂

Clothing tips for women

  • Moscow and St Petersburg are very much like any other cosmopolitan city ; women love to dress up and are rarely seen without make-up and high heels.
  • But, with all the sightseeing to do, we suggest you save your high heels for the evenings.
  • A few well chosen pieces of costume jewelry will transform any outfit.
  • And a pashmina is a versatile piece too that will dress up any outfit – try it with a simple smart dress.
  • If you are planning to visit an Orthodox Church be sure to cover your head with a scarf, and cover up bare arms and legs – your pashmina or wrap can come in handy for this too.
  • If you are in Russia on business, pack a conservative skirt-suit with tights or stockings and smart shoes.

Clothing tips for men

  • If you are in Russia on business men are expected to wear a dark, well tailored suit and tie, with smart shoes.

Regions of Russia

  • No trip would be complete without sight of Moscow's palatial metro (underground) dripping with chandeliers.
  • For travel on the Trans-Siberian railway you'll need to dress in layers. The train itself is very warm inside, but for the frequent half-hour stops you'll need to put on boots, warm coat, hat and gloves as it can be freezing outside. There are power outlets for charging your phone etc, but don't leave it unattended and you'll need an adaptor. Take soft drinks with you – it will be much cheaper than buying them on board, and snacks will be useful especially in the winter when there are fewer sellers on the platforms.

Other things to pack

  • You'll need a visa for Russia, and arrange it well in advance to avoid paying a premium at the last minute. Remember too that you must carry your passport with you at all times.
  • If you don't buy Russian Rubles before you go, take US dollars or Euros as they are far easier to change once in the country.
  • To use electrical gadgets you may need a travel adapter plug , and also a step down voltage converter if your devices are not designed for Russian voltage (220V) .
  • A lightweight day sack or shoulder bag will come in handy to carry your sightseeing essentials.
  • If you tend to buy bottled water , consider carrying a LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle – fill up from any source and get clean, safe drinking water without wasting plastic bottles.
  • Avoid paying unexpected baggage fees – use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance. Don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! The ‘ Mastryoshka ‘ nesting dolls are famous of course, but look out too for amber jewelry and beautiful lacquer boxes . If you want to stock up on vodka , remember you will need to pack it in checked-in luggage unless you buy at the airport duty-free.
  • And a final tip – note that it's considered bad luck to whistle indoors !

What to Pack for a Trip to Russia in Winter

Wondering what to pack for a trip to Russia in the winter? This post is here to help with packing tips for both men and women.

An image shows a Russian street in winter, with snow on the ground, pedestrians walking the streets, and a canopy of hanging lanterns over the road.

Russia is cold and snowy in the winter, there is no doubt about that. However, this shouldn’t discourage you from visiting! Russia is even more beautiful in winter , in my opinion. After living here for a little over a year, I’ve figured out how to dress appropriately for the conditions. And this post will share my tips for what clothing you should pack to ensure you have a fabulous time exploring in this winter wonderland!

The average temperature in Russia in winter can range from 10 degrees Fahrenheit to 32 Fahrenheit.

This post is geared toward someone who will be touring St. Petersburg and Moscow. If you are touring outside of major cities that involve winter activities (such as snowmobiling), this is not the packing list for you.

Is There a Dress Code for Tourists in Russia in the Winter?

What is the dress code for tourists in Russia? This is a question that I get asked frequently enough that I figured I should address it before we get too far into this packing list! Unlike other places I’ve traveled to, such as Egypt and Jordan , there is NO dress code for tourists (or anyone, really) in Russia. You can wear whatever you want!

Sergiyev Posad, an Orthodox cathedral in Russia. Tourists mull around in front of the large white building. There's snow on the ground and snow covered trees.

That being said, though, if you plan to visit any Orthodox cathedrals (which I do recommend doing – the cathedrals in this country are spectacular), you are supposed to have your knees and shoulders covered for both men and women. So, no shorts (which is not a problem in winter). And women should have their hair covered (any scarf or hat suffices – I’ve even used my jacket hood when I had forgotten my scarf, and it worked).

I’ll offer a few tips for how to dress so you blend in a little better with the Russians and don’t stick out like a sore thumb while you’re here! But, again, you definitely don’t need to adhere to any specific dress code while in Russia.

What to Pack for a Trip to Russia in Winter (Tips for Men and Women)

I typically write exactly what it is that I pack for my trips when I do these packing posts. However, I’ve lived in Moscow for a little over a year… so my packing list will look a little more extensive than the average traveler! I did, however, help friends and family pack for winter trips to visit us, so I’ll share roughly what they packed for their trips – with a condensed list at the end of the post. (On average, friends and family stayed in Russia for around 10 days.)

Three people pose in front of two Russian cathedrals during the winter. The square is filled with people, and a large Christmas tree stands in the background.

Exploring Outfits

For a day of sightseeing… whether it be exploring the Kremlin or the palaces in St. Petersburg , you’re going to want to bundle up!

Water-Resistant/Comfortable Boots

The most important thing you can pack for this trip is a pair of water-resistant and warm boots. Nothing will ruin your day quicker than wet socks and cold feet!

However, be careful not to wear boots that are too  warm, as they can get bulky and be difficult to walk in. Plus, having sweaty feet isn’t any fun, either. I don’t think it’s necessary for you to pack heavy snow boots for a day of exploring in the cities.

A close up image of a woman's legs. She's wearing blue jeans and tan winter boots. She is standing on green grass covered in golden fallen leaves.

The hiking boots above were essentially my winter boots for all of last winter in Moscow (and for exploring in St. Petersburg). They’re water-resistant and lined, so they kept my feet toasty. The extra little heel they have also helped to keep me above the slush, so my feet were never wet. That extra heel also helped to keep my toes from getting too cold when walking on cement streets all day. (I made the mistake of wearing flat “fashion” boots a few times that didn’t have much padding and my feet FROZE.)

My husband and family members also wore some variation of hiking boots while they were in Russia. My brother-in-law especially liked wearing his Timberlands while he was here.

The streets in Moscow and St. Petersburg will be plowed on a regular basis, so you don’t have to worry about snow being much over your ankles.

Thick Socks

Depending on how warm your boots are, it’s a good idea to also pack some wool socks . Now, I personally never wore much more than a thin pair of socks with my boots, as my boots were plenty warm. (And I also run pretty warm, too.) However, my husband would wear wool socks, as he is always freezing.

A woman wearing winter outer gear walks towards a colorful Russian building. Snow lines the cobblestone road and snowflakes fall around her.

Warm Winter Coat

The next most important thing you can pack is a warm winter coat, preferably one with a hood. I wouldn’t say you need to run out and buy a crazy expensive winter coat just for your trip to Russia…unless you want to!

The key things to keep in mind when buying a winter coat for this trip, though, are:

  • Length – something a little longer is nice, as it will help keep your bum and legs warm too! Many ladies in Russia wear the long puffer jackets with fur-lined hoods for everyday wear in the winter. (Like this Eddie Bauer Women’s Down coat .)
  • Hood – a coat with a hood is a good idea. It gets especially windy in St. Petersburg, you’ll be thankful to have an extra layer over your noggin and neck. I also recommend a hood that is lined with fur or faux fur. It’s nice to have another layer of protection against the wind and snow when you have your fur hood up!
  • Pockets – extra spots to hide your phone and valuables are also a good idea. It’s also nice if you have a spot to put your hands. Even if I’m wearing gloves, I still like to be able to put my hands in my pockets when I’m walking in the middle of winter.
  • Water-resistant – this is also a good idea, as the snow can get wet and sloppy at times.
  • Big enough to fit extra layers under it – as long as you have extra room to layer under your winter coat, you’ll be just fine.
  • Obviously, a coat that is thick and indeed a winter coat – don’t be bringing your thin spring/fall coats!

A woman stands in a snowy field wearing a cozy olive green winter jacket with a thick faux fur hood.

Here are a few more of my favorite options for women:

Here are a few of my favorite options for men.

My husband wears the coat below in the winter – it is especially nice as it’s very warm yet lightweight and can be rolled and packed into a tiny little cube! It’s rather pricey, though… and not an absolute necessity.

A man poses in front of a colorful Russian building in the middle of a winter scene. He's wearing a navy blue winter jacket and furry black Russian hat, scarf, and gloves.

Hats are, of course, always a good idea. I really am not a hat person, and wear my hood more often than not. (I have a huge head and hats tend to give me a headache.) My husband, however, wears his fur hat he bought at the Izmailovsky market every chance he gets. It is VERY warm.

Jeans or Wind-Resistant Pants

Any type of bottom that will cut the wind will be your best friend! I personally like wearing thicker jeggings, as they are beyond comfortable to wear and they help keep me warm. I also like wearing my travel jeans .

A woman poses in front of a bright window. She's wearing skinny jeans and a colorful sweater with a dinosaur pattern across the chest.

You should pack sweaters that are warm, but a little looser. This way you can layer under it. That crazy dinosaur sweater is my favorite for that reason – I can easily layer under it!

I do recommend packing a base layer, such as compression tights and a compression shirt . I, personally, only wear a base layer, though, if I am going to be outdoors for hours on end. This really only happens when I go to the Izmailovsky market . Otherwise, I wouldn’t wear a base layer as I, personally, get too sweaty. This is a personal preference, though, and your tolerance to cold. (I grew up in Wisconsin before coming to Russia!) You may want a base layer for any time you’re outdoors for more than a few minutes if you grew up in a warmer climate.

A woman is dressed in winter gear - a knit hat and red shawl overcoat, gloves, and jeans. She is standing next to a white fence decorated with pine wreathes and Christmas decorations, as the snow falls around her.

Thick Gloves

Be sure to pack thick gloves as well. Thin mittens are pretty much useless in Russian winters! I wouldn’t say you need to pack your ski gloves… but somewhere in between the two.

I wore these touchscreen-compatible winter gloves all last winter, and my husband wore these men’s touchscreen-compatible winter gloves . But again, we’re accustomed to the cold. If you’re not, I would suggest getting an even thicker pair of gloves, like these women’s winter ski mittens .

For guys and gals, wearing a scarf is a good idea. Anything that’s a little thicker will be fine. I especially love a warm handknit scarf from Etsy , as it keeps me warm and fits with my coat.

Now, I think we had roughly 3 sunny days all last winter in Moscow. (I’m exaggerating, but only a little bit!). However, I still liked to wear my Kalani sunglasses from Maui Jim to protect my eyes from the wind and snow if I could. (Obviously, regular glasses will help with protection too.)

A woman poses while walking on a sidewalk. She's wearing knee-high boots, a long coat, scarf, and carrying a white handbag. There's snow on the sidewalk and tree branches behind her.

Dinner Outfits

Now, this will obviously vary by where you are eating. However, for the most part, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the locals look very smart when they go out.

If you wear the same outfit you wore all day exploring, you’d be fine. You would likely stand out as a tourist, though. (Which, if that doesn’t bother you then you’re fine! I can’t imagine you’d have any issues either.)

If you do want to blend in with the locals a little better, though. I also recommend the following for dinner at night.

Find all the details of my cozy “after the holidays” outfit here and my comfy, cozy, and chic sightseeing outfit here .

A woman poses on an outdoor balcony. She's wearing brown boots, blue jeans, and an olive green blazer. She carries a caramel brown handbag, and smiles looking out over the balcony.

Nice Top/Sweater

Bringing a nice sweater for dinner at night is also a good idea for both men and women. I also would wear a blazer, like the one above, quite frequently too. I would then wear my coat over it for walking to the restaurant. (That blazer outfit can be found here .)

A closeup of a women's legs and feet. She's standing on a snowy sidewalk, wearing knee-high black leather boots over skinny jeans.

“Dressy” Boots

Boots are still a good idea to wear. I would advise bringing a lighter “fashion” pair for both the ladies and the guys. I would wear the ones above ( shop the Sam Edelman boots here ). My husband would wear boots like the ones below.

Jeans/Pants

Nice bottoms that aren’t holey or stained. You don’t have to get too crazy here, though!

A woman walks down a sidewalk, window shopping. She's wearing a knee-length black and white flannel dress with black tights.

Ladies, you won’t stand out if you wear a dress to dinner. That being said, be sure to wear appropriate footwear, though, so you don’t get wet feet walking to the restaurant! (The shoes pictured above only worked because there wasn’t much snow that day!)

Find all the details of my flannel dress outfit in this post here .

Going to a Show Outfit

Now, if you are going to a ballet, opera, play, etc… then you’re going to need to pack an extra nice outfit! I’ve written a couple of blog posts specifically for how to dress for these events, below.

Using a VPN When Traveling to Russia

VPN is short for “virtual private network.” A VPN (like  IPVanish ) sets up a private connection between your device and whatever network you are connected to – so, no one can see your browsing data.  It is important to use  a VPN  anytime you are connected to public Wifi  (such as at a restaurant, resort, hotel, cafe, airport, etc.). This is because when you connect to a public network no matter where you are, you run the risk of a hacker grabbing your unencrypted data. Trust me, speaking from experience here…this can put a real damper on your trip if your banking, phone or email get hacked while you’re traveling!

You are also likely going to need  a VPN  to access many websites while you are in Russia – as  Russian IP addresses tend to be blocked ! (Again, speaking from experience.)

VPNs can also help you save on domestic flights, watch Netflix shows around the world and more! You can read more about using  a VPN  in my post “ Why I Use a VPN When Traveling and at Home (And You Should Too) .”

Hi! I’m Lindsey, the voice behind Have Clothes, Will Travel. I’m an online shopping aficionado from a small town in Wisconsin who has also lived in Russia, Argentina, Japan & Australia.

This is soooo helpful! I never know what to pack and wish I had one of these for every destination we visit.

Thank you. I’m so glad you enjoyed this post.

You are certainly wrapped up for Winter in style, you look utterly gorgeous in these looks and some great tips. I haven’t been to Russia before however before going I think I would change at the airport into some warm Winter gear.

I especially like the red coat and white hat, something I would personally opt for also.

Thank you – glad you enjoyed the tips.

I have a feeling I would need way more base layers than you Lindsey…haha!! I’m always cold like your hubby. But it’d be worth going to see the sights. XOXO Jodie

Haha, yeah, I’m a bit of a polar bear! Fortunately, there are so many good base layer options out there these days!

I’ve Been Cruising for 20+ Years, Here Are the 15 Best Dinner Outfits to Pack for Your Next Trip — From $27

These stunning styles match any dress code — and budget.

best travel dress 2023

Travel + Leisure / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

When you think of a cruise, you might imagine walking around in flip-flops and a bathing suit all day. But for me, one of my favorite things about setting sail is the excuse to dress up. Many cruise lines have dress codes at night in their ship's formal dining rooms, and if you choose to eat at a specialty restaurant, you’ll want to show up looking your best. I've been cruising for over 20 years , which adds up to about 15 cruises, and have sailed everywhere from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean. Needless to say, I’ve learned a thing or two about what you’ll need once aboard.

Cruise dress codes have become more relaxed in recent years. However, I just got back from a five-night cruise to Bermuda on Royal Caribbean ’s Liberty of the Seas, and the itinerary included multiple theme nights. When there was no theme, guests were asked to wear smart casual outfits in dining rooms and on-board restaurants. I took this as an opportunity to turn the ship deck into my own personal runway with flowy maxi dresses , lightweight linen , and colorful floral prints. Here are 15 cruise outfits that will make you the best-dressed guest aboard your next cruise.

Anrabess One-shoulder Wide-leg Linen Jumpsuit

A night on a cruise ship isn’t just about good dining — you’ll often have the chance to see a show before or after your meal. This breezy wide-legged jumpsuit would be a comfortable option to wear all night long, especially while sitting for long periods. It’s made with lightweight linen for breathability and features a fashionable silhouette with a one-shoulder strap. The cinched waist and smocked back are ultra-flattering on different body types while the side zipper makes it easy to put on after a long day at the beach.

Grace Karin Criss-cross Halterneck Floral Maxi Dress

Every night might feel like a tropical night when you’re out at sea, but there was actually a dedicated theme night on my most recent cruise that required a specific look. I packed a flowy blue maxi dress with a halterneck and Hawaiian-inspired flower print and ended up wearing it to Chops Grille , which is arguably Royal Carribean’s nicest specialty restaurant. While my dress is an older style from For Love & Lemons , I found a dress with a similar one on Amazon for a much more affordable price.

Abercrombie Linen-blend Shell Mini Dress

Abercrombie

Linen clothes and beach vacations may go hand-in-hand, but this mini Abercrombie dress is versatile enough to become a most worn item in your wardrobe — which is always helpful to take into consideration if you’re using girl math to justify your trip's clothing purchases. On a cruise ship, I’d wear this dress with sandals, but it instantly becomes city-ready when paired with cowboy boots. The high neckline balances its mini length and it features vertical stitching to accentuate your curves.

If you’ve ever sailed with Virgin Voyages, you know the cruise line features Scarlet Night , a full-ship activation where guests are invited to dress in red. This dress would be perfect to pack, and it also comes in black, gray, and white for those who prefer neutrals.

Reformation Annabella Lace Trim Linen Minidress

Another common cruise theme night is for guests to be asked to wear all-white outfits. A white dress is a timeless closet staple that you’ll wear again and again. If you don’t already have one, why not invest before your trip? In my opinion, no one does white dresses better than Reformation, and this button-down dress is the perfect combination of classic and trendy. The lace trim gives an otherwise simple shirt dress a more feminine touch.

The high-quality materials make it worth the splurge — it’s made from 100 percent linen, which is lightweight, breathable, and durable. One Nordstrom shopper said they kept receiving compliments on this dress, while another called it “my favorite summer dress.” Hurry, it's selling out fast.

Travel + Leisure / Rebecca Shinners

PrettyGarden Floral Maxi Dress

I wore a red maxi dress with pink flowers on my cruise, and you should too. Or, you could go with one of the 29 other colorways of this flowy maxi dress, ranging from solid light blue to pink and blue stripes. My dress is from Faithfull the Brand , and while its 100 percent linen fabric made it worth the splurge to me, I can’t deny that this more affordable version from Amazon is just as eye-catching.

A long, tiered maxi skirt makes this a comfortable option for walking through windy decks. The one-shoulder tie is stylish but also practical, making the dress more adjustable. It’s no wonder the dress has more than 3,700 five-star ratings. One reviewer , who called it “very comfortable” and “flattering,” said, “If you are on the fence, go ahead and buy it — you won’t regret it!”

Nashalyly Tiered Maxi Skirt

Tiered white maxi skirts have become a popular trend recently, but they’re also a match-anything closet staple. My mom wore this boho-inspired style multiple times on our recent trip, inspiring me to add a similar Aerie skirt to my own wardrobe. However, you can achieve the same look with this top-rated style from Amazon , which is available in a slew of colors and made with a lightweight gauze material that can be dressed up for a smart casual outfit, or worn casually during the day.

Meshki Suki Knit Maxi Dress With Flowers

Crochet is another fabric that goes hand-in-hand with a tropical vacation. This maxi dress was a bit out of my comfort zone but ended up being one of my favorite outfits of the trip. I felt so good in it all night long. My dress is Caroline Constas from Marshall’s , and while it isn’t available online, this Meshki version is basically identical. It features the same 3D crochet florals but has the bonus of coming in five different colors. The black with white flowers might have to go into my cart for my next vacation.

FQA Long Evening Gown

If you’re the type of person who enjoys dressing up, a cruise is your time to shine. Most cruises I’ve been on have included one or two formal nights, but on my most recent trip, this was replaced with a "wear your best" night. While some people dressed down, others wore gowns. Personally, I never mind being the most dressed-up person in the room. After all, a cruise does offer great family photo opportunities.

This dress features a thick material with spandex for some stretch, which makes it comfortable and flattering, while the leg slit will keep you cool. “The V-neck and sleeveless design gave it an elegant yet comfortable feel, and the split wrap style added a touch of flair. I received so many compliments throughout the evening,” said one reviewer, who wore this dress on a cruise . A versatile piece you can re-wear is always a win, and this dress would also be appropriate for a black tie wedding.

Grace Karin Sequin Wrap Mini Dress

One of my all-time favorite cruises took place during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, ending with a balloon drop on the ship’s promenade. If I were to ring in the new year in a tropical destination again, this Amazon-loved number is the dress I’d want to be wearing.

Similar to a sparkly option I've been eyeing from Pacsun, this pick is sure to help you stand out with its shimmery navy sequins and sexy wrap front. The dress has some stretch to it to keep you comfortable throughout dinner in the dining room. Throw a pair of silver kitten heels in your suitcase and you’ll be ready for a long night of celebrations.

Anrabess One-shoulder Smocked Two-piece Set

A matching set is a one-and-done travel outfit that you can rely on to look and feel good on board. I wore a floral two-piece from Marshall’s to dine at Sabor, Royal Carribean’s Mexican specialty restaurant, but I’m eyeing this Amazon set for my next cruise. The one-shoulder top is smocked all over, which I find hugs your body in a way that’s both comfortable and flattering. It’s paired with a maxi skirt in a simple but pretty silhouette. Plus, it has pockets — perfect for stashing your state card, which is pretty much the only thing you need on a cruise ship.

This set comes in 18 colors, including both prints and solids. While it would be perfect for a smart casual night, it also comes in white and floral prints, depending on what themes you’re packing for. Reviewers who have worn this set everywhere from Hawaii to Mexico praise its lightweight material as being perfect for summer. "The material is very soft and flattering," said one shopper . And, if you’re going on a longer trip, you can mix and match this set with other tops and bottoms to make the most of your vacation wardrobe.

Resistor Midi Slip Dress

There are other patterns besides florals to make a statement. To add charm and fun to your cruise outfits, I recommend opting for something like the Resistor Midi Slip Dress that's decorated in unique, geometric squiggles for intrigue. the simple yet elegant nature of the slip dress will match any cruise itinerary. Plus, Personally, I was eyeing this Madewell x Lisa Says Gah! illustrated dress inspired by the Greek Isles and deep blue seas; I can’t think of a better way to spend a night than watching the sunset over the ocean while wearing lemon wedges and wine bottles on my dress.

Wayf Two-piece Poplin Pleated Skirt Set

I’m the type of person who likes to dress on theme for where I’m headed, and this set says, "New England cruise." I’d imagine sailing from Maine to Canada in the matching poplin shirt and pleated skirt. Plus, it fits the smart casual dress code of most cruise lines. The long-sleeved top would keep you comfortable in a cold dining room, but the sleeves can also easily be rolled up. I’d likely wear this outfit with loafers or ballet flats, but it could also be made more warm-weather appropriate with slip-on sandals .

Cider Tube Ruched Ruffle Mini Dress

This might look like just another white dress at first glance, but stick with me here to see the vision. Disney Cruise Line is known for having a pirate theme night during some itineraries, and this dress would be the perfect base for your outfit. Just add accessories and, shiver me timbers, you’ll look like an extra straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean .

On other ships, the dress would be a great pick for an all-white night or a more casual night where you skip the formal dining room and head straight for the buffet. “This is the perfect summer dress that you can dress up or down,” said one reviewer . “The quality was good and it fit very well.”

Peppermayo Ayla Satin Mini Dress

This yellow slip dress was one of the first things I packed for my trip, and I felt so good in it that I brought it to the beach in Bermuda for a fun photo shoot. Not only was butter yellow one of the biggest color trends of this past summer, but it also looks great against a fresh sun tan. However, this dress is also available in blue if you prefer.

As someone with a smaller chest, I was worried about how the bust would fall on me, but it ended up being ultra-flattering due to the ruching. It’s also a higher cut and provides more chest coverage in comparison to other similar dresses I’ve tried. The delicate lace and satin material feel elegant while the open back makes it perfect for warmer nights at sea. If you do choose to order this dress, keep in mind that there’s no stretch (though the tie back is adjustable) and Peppermayo tends to run small. I went up one size, following the size chart for just the right fit.

Newshows Lightweight Button-down Cardigan

You may have dinner dresses, matching sets, and jumpsuits on your packing list, but trust me, this cardigan is the one piece of clothing you won’t want to set sail without. Cruise ships are notorious for blasting the air conditioner inside and you won’t want to be forced to cover your chic dinner outfit up with a sweatshirt. Toss this cardigan into your suitcase to stay warm without sacrificing your outfit. It comes in 35 different colors to match any look, but I prefer to go with white so I only have to pack one.

What to Wear in Moscow in Winter

Written By: Julia K

Going to Moscow for the holidays? You’re in luck!

Why? Because there are no lines to the major tourist spots, there are fewer people in general, and you get the best prices. You can also get bragging rights that you have visited Moscow, Russia during its famous winter.

Winter in Russia lasts about five months. It gets snowy and cold going into negative Celsius at the end of October beginning November. Spring begins in mid-March and lasts till mid-May. Summers are hot and sometimes humid.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating your winter  travel capsule wardrobe , which should fit in your suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

The first thing to know as you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter is how to pack for the weather.

Read these guides to get started, then read the specific details below for outfit ideas for various activities in Moscow:

  • How to Pack for Cold Weather
  • How to Stay Warm in Cold Weather (without the bulk)
  • Extreme Cold Weather Clothing Strategies
  • The Secret to Packing Light in Winter

Local women look their best anywhere and everywhere they go. Do pack nicer items and bring your makeup, too .  The following suggestions are based on a two week itinerary and contain three to four looks for the following activities:

  • museums, walking around,
  • going to a theater or ballet,
  • going out to a restaurant and club, or
  • getting invited to a random dinner at someone’s apartment, because it can happen!
Traveling to other parts of the country? Read this guide on what to wear in Russia !

Walking around the downtown area

Going to Moscow is a very unique experience. Walking around Red Square , New and Old Arbat, and visiting the ice skating rink in VDNH or Gorky Park will require warm attire.

Bring a long, warm winter coat that goes to your knees and has an attached hood. Choose a down jacket like these for optimal warmth.  Russian women love fur coats–not just as a fashion statement but due to their functionality in the cold.

Add warm winter accessories such as a big, warm blanket scarf that you can also use as a hood. Don’t forget a warm hat, thermal underwear , and mittens (not gloves).

Find out why thermal underwear for women is absolutely essential for cold weather travel!

As you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter be prepared for icy conditions; bring comfortable shoes with a thick sole that are appropriate for the snow and slush. Here are a few warm waterproof leather boots  suggested by our readers. Don’t forget to wear them with warm wool socks !

General tip: wearing layers will give you more freedom in the outside-inside situation. It gets very warm in the subway underground and inside some buildings, compared to the cold outdoors.

It’s important to note that during winter, the temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F, which is exceptionally cold! The average is around -15°C / 5°F.

The one easy way to tell a tourist from a local is if they’re wearing heels and makeup. Generally speaking,  Moscow ladies take fashion, makeup, hair, and style very seriously. Bring your best attire and a splash of bling for a bit of glam.

A simple set of stud earrings can easily elevate an outfit from drab to chic. From outdoor adventures to city breaks, wear a set like  this for any trip!

Going to a museum

When planning what to wear In Moscow in winter (or anytime), keep in mind that sloppy attire is frowned upon. While looking your best when traveling is always a given, you might be refused service or be simply ignored in certain places. People may treat you differently depending on how you dress.

To a museum, wear dark denim, boots or booties, a  crossbody purse , jacket, and a shirt. Don’t forget to do your makeup and hair.

Many places may require you to check your coat so you should still have the appropriate layers to wear inside without feeling uncomfortably warm or cold. Checking your coat also allows you to stay warm when you’re outdoors but move freely indoors.

Learn how to layer clothes !

Places to visit are Diamond Fund , Red Square, the  Gum department store (pronounced like goom), and  Armoury Chamber , Tsentral’ny Dom Khudozhnika ,  Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Gallery .

To a theater or ballet

Winter is the time to visit the world famous Bolshoi Theater. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, then The Nutcracker is the one to see! I would advise getting there one hour early, order some champagne and sandwiches, and check out the crowd. There are plenty of other theaters that are not as famous but equally as good.

Floor length gowns aren’t necessary or practical, so bring a cocktail dress, shoes, evening clutch, jewelry, and do your makeup and hair. Tip: gorgeous jewelry can dress up a versatile LBD.

Do not wear denim to an opera or ballet!

If you are a guest in someone’s house

Russians do like to invite people into their homes. Dress modestly but with great attention to detail as a well dressed appearance is always appreciated. You can wear dark denim jeans, a sweater, jewelry, a nice bag, and boots.

Please remember to always take off your shoes when in someone’s house. It is considered rude to walk in street shoes at home. So pack your party socks or tights!

Moscow is a hub of amazing places to eat. One thing’s for sure–you’ll never be hungry. It caters to all budgets and styles. If you’re eating on a budget, then your daytime attire will suit you perfectly.

If you plan to dine at nice restaurants or visit clubs, wear a  cocktail dress, black tights, heels, and a clutch. Alternatively, wear leather pants with a flattering long sleeve blouse and jewelry.

General tip : If you plan on dining out, do make a reservation on Fridays and weekends. Otherwise there are plenty of places to choose from. Local favorites include Chaihana , Valenok , Ludi Kak Ludi and any cafe in Kitai Gorod.

Moscow is a non-stop hub of an always-moving machine. You should definitely go and enjoy yourself even during winter! A post on what to wear in Moscow during summer is coming up soon. Stay tuned!

Another question is How can I walk with highheels in winter if there is snow?

Traveling to Moscow end of March and first of April. Do women wear fur coats at this time of year? If yes, does the colorof the fur matter. Would it be lighter coats–snow leopard, silver saga fox or is a dark coat of fake cur acceptable? Or would a puffer coat be advisable with a beanie with fox fur pompom? Or would a wool full length cap be appropriate? Thanks

Hi Leslie, fur coats are a common fashion style, because they keep you toasty and warm, and look fantastic. It would depend on the temperatures, I would recommend that you check the weather forecast closer to your departure dates to ensue you have packed the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Our readers are the best at answering questions like yours, so to get you as much feedback as possible, I have gone ahead and scheduled your question to appear on TFG’s facebook page. I’m a girl who has only lived in warm weather. I have never experienced winter like in moscow. I have dumb questions about shoes and attire. If going to the ballet with heels, do you bring your boots to walk outside and inside?

Also, can you wear winter snow boots inside a university for a long time? I bought the sorels Joan of arctic and winter carnivals. Will they be too hot for inside? Do I need to bring extra pair of shoes?

Hi Ninotchka, thank you for your question. Let me look into this for you! 🙂

Will keep it in mind for a future post!

Thanks so much for this article! It is so hard to find advice for winter/snowy travel. It is still about layering! Leggings under my skinny jeans. I wear my winter boots (Sorel with fur trim) on the plane, and my marmot long “down defender” water resistant coat Squishes down in the packing cubes.

Thanks for sharing Alanna! Glad you found this article helpful!
