Military Discounts for Cruises

Last updated on May 24th, 2024 at 12:49 pm

Military personnel, whether active, retired, or veteran, make many sacrifices to serve their country. As an acknowledgment of these sacrifices, most cruise lines offer some form of discount to members of the military.

The perks from a cruise line for being a member of the military can come in the form of discounts, special rates, or onboard credits, depending on the line.

From knowing the different types of discounts available to understanding the best way to book a cruise, this guide will help you find a cruise that offers military discounts.

Table of Contents

Qualifications For Military Discounts

Military discounts are given to those who qualify, so you must meet certain requirements. While the types of requirements might vary between cruise lines, generally the standards you will need to meet are listed below.

An individual must be classified as one of the following:

1. Active personnel currently serving in the Canadian National Defense, United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserves.

2. Retired from any of the divisions listed above. The definition of “retired” is a person with a minimum of 20 years of service, medically retired or 100% disabled .

3. Veterans with an Honorable Discharge that served a minimum of 2 years, or served 6 months in an active war zone, in any of the United States services listed above.

4. Spouses of actively deployed or deceased military personnel are eligible to book one stateroom as long as the eligible spouse is occupying the stateroom.

To be able to receive a military discount, you must present proper identification. That identification is usually in the form of a United States Uniformed Service white identification card for US military personnel.

For Canadian personnel, it is a white N.D.21 identification card with a red Canadian flag displayed for Canadian National Defense.  You will be asked to present your card at the time of check-in and again at embarkation.

For specific requirements, check the cruise line website that you are interested in sailing with for more details.

How to Find Military Discounts

Finding military discounts for cruises is as simple as logging on to the cruise line’s website or calling the cruise line directly.

The best place for accurate and up-to-date information on military discounts is with the individual cruise line. It may take a bit of your time to research a particular line, but would be worth it to save some money.

Here are some of the cruise lines that offer military discounts:

Norwegian Cruise Line

In November of 2022, NCL launched their first-ever Military Appreciation Program . Designed to benefit active and retired U.S. military members and their spouses, the program has discounts across the company’s 18-ship fleet.

NCL’s program will give eligible military personnel a 10% discount on their cruise fare. This program can be combined with their Free At Sea offer.

Carnival Cruise Military Cruise Deals

Carnival offers reduced rates to military personnel. In addition to that there are deals that are offered in May and November for Memorial and Veteran’s Day.

Some of the offers are for discounted fates, complimentary cabin upgrades and/or onboard credit. Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-764-7419.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

Royal will occasionally offer military rates (not a discount) on select bookings throughout the year. The rate might only apply to specific cabins on select sailings.

There are times when the rate can be a very decent 40%, but you will need to do some research for times and ships. For the specifics, it would be best to call the cruise line at 1-866-562-7625 as the website does not offer the information.

MSC Cruises

MSC has offers for active and retired military personnel that are up to 10% off almost all sailings. A 5% discount is offered on interior and ocean-view cabins, while 10% is offered on balcony, suite and MSC Yacht Club staterooms.

On MSC, parents, parents-in-law and dependent children of active and retired military personnel also qualify for the discount. MSC’s Civil Service discount program offers police and firefighters discounts, too.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-833-241-5905.

Princess Cruises

While Princess does not offer a discount, they do offer up to $250 on board credit to active and veteran members of the U.S. and Canadian militaries. The credit can be used on any cruise at any time of the year, so that does make it convenient.

Princess gives out the credit in this manner: $50 for sailings of six days or less, $100 for siblings of 7 to 13 days and $250 for sailings two weeks in length or longer.

Contact the cruise line for specifics either online or at 1-800-774-6237.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Lines offer military rates on select Disney cruises and are valid for new bookings only. This article will give you information on Disney rates: Disney Cruise Line Military Discounts

As this rate is offered on select cruises, it is best to call the cruise line for assistance with booking at 1-800-951-3532.

Paperwork Needed For Military Discounts

Whatever cruise line you decide to sail with, in order to receive your military discount or credit, you will need to provide the line with proper paperwork.

You will be asked to provide relevant documents that may include:

  • Military or dependent ID
  • Current LES (leave and earnings statement)
  • Copy of retirement papers (Form DD214 or DD256)
  • Proof of Honorable Discharge (Form DD214)

Depending on the cruise line, you may need to provide proof of military service at the time you book your cruise and again at check-in. Plan on carrying those relevant documents with you on embarkation day .

Going Above The Norm

Carnival has always shown appreciation for members of our military. In 2023, Carnival Cruise Lines hosted over 1,500 military appreciation gatherings.

Carnival recently honored military women in special ceremonies during Fleet Week. They have also initiated a Military Appreciation Day across the fleet during North American sailings that take place the week of July 24th.

Several ships in the fleet, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Freedom, Carnival Glory, Carnival Panorama , Carnival Pride, Carnival Radiance, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Venezia, Carnival Vista, Mardi Gras, and the new Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Firenze, feature the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge. The bar will soon be added to Carnival Legend .

Recently, Carnival celebrated more than 150 military women aboard the Carnival Conquest during Miami’s first-ever Fleet Week. The ceremony included servicewomen from the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

As a cruise line, Carnival carries more active military members and veterans than any other cruise line.

Final Thoughts

Cruising can be a relaxing vacation option for military members and their families, as it is a way to spend quality time together and a wonderful way to make memories that will last a lifetime.

A cruise takes care of all those everyday chores for you. You have your own lodgings, food is plentiful , varied and cooked for you. No dishes, no housekeeping, no outside distractions.

There is a variety of activities and entertainment onboard to keep you busy, or you can sit and soak up the sun on the deck. A cruise allows you to concentrate on yourself and your family and re-energize.

best military discount for cruises

Costa Cruises is an Italian-based cruise line with origins that impressively date back to the 19th century.

The company has since been bought out by Carnival yet continues to remain a major cruise line.

Costa has multiple options to pick from its fleet.

Costa Cruises does not have an exclusive rate or discount to military personnel.

However, they do introduce low interline rates from time to time, some of which are only reserved for military customers.

Yet the offer is seasonal so you need to check back frequently to find out about their latest deals.

The interline rate is traditionally only offered to employees of airlines and is therefore very good.

It can save you big time bucks on your next cruise.

The biggest hassle is you need to check-in frequently with Costa to see what is new.

We recommend checking the Costa Cruises – Special Deals web page frequently for exclusive offers.

    Military Discount on Caribbean Cruise?

    Yes for veterans too.

If you’re looking for Caribbean cruise deals with a military and Veteran discount, you’ve come to the right place.

Once you select a cruise, any military discount, upgrades, onboard credits, and other perks and promotions offered by us and the cruise line for that specific cruise ship and departure date will be revealed.

Our site contains a live cruise search engine, so it contains the absolute newest military discounts, deals and all available cabins.

Are there big military discounts on 2024 and 2025 Caribbean cruises?

The months of September through early December are always the cheapest time of the year to cruise.

Cruises are selling so well for 2024, however, so prices on Caribbean cruises during the high-seasons of summer and holidays are going up fast and selling out!

We offer a military discount on every Caribbean cruise.

Our rates are discounted below the cruise lines’ lowest rates so you’ll be getting Caribbean cruise deals with military and veteran discount no matter what!

When you book with Military Cruise Deals, you’ll get the lowest rate and benefits offered by all cruise lines.

PLUS you’ll get our discounts and benefits on top of that.

So you’ll always pay less and get more.

How do you find Caribbean cruise deals with a military and veteran discount applied?

    Where do Caribbean cruises go?

What’s the difference between these locations: Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean, and Southern Caribbean?

We’ll tell ya!  And show you all the cruise deals to available too!

    Eastern Caribbean

Eastern Caribbean cruises go to the Bahamas (Nassau and Freeport), Grand Turk, Jamaica, the cruise lines’ private islands like Stirrup Cay, Half Moon Bay, Ocean Cay, and the Virgin Islands like St. Thomas, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

These destinations are all very beachy, with perfect sand and water.  They are stunningly beautiful. They are also usually small and safe.  Like, it’s almost impossible for you to be lost or left behind at one of the private islands or Grand Turk.  These places are less than 5 miles wide and they will come find you rather than leave you behind.  (They usually find folks passed out on the beach from too many margaritas.)

We feel the most culturally and architecturally interesting Eastern Caribbean cruise destination is Puerto Rico.  Christopher Columbus arrived in Puerto Rico in 1493, and the Europeans (Spain) stayed and colonized this island. So old San Juan looks like a 500-year-old European city.  Against the backdrop of the stunning Caribbean waters, it’s a very unique and beautiful juxtaposition.  GO!

    Western Caribbean

Western Caribbean cruises go to Mexican ports like Cozumel, Costa Maya; Central American countries such as Belize and Honduras; Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Key West. It’s a great time to cruise the Caribbean with a military and veteran discount!

These destinations are equally beautiful, and but also very interesting, as Mexico and South American countries have long histories and cultures rich with distinct architecture, cuisine, native dress, traditions, etc.

And because these countries are connected to the North and South American continents, the number and kinds of animal life are a lot greater and more varied as well.   Can you say SLOTH?  Yes, you can find those at Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth hangout in Roatan, Honduras.

There’s a lot to see and do at these destinations.  So if you want more than just sitting on a beautiful beach, a Western Caribbean cruise is best for you.

Southern Caribbean cruises most often start in San Juan and go to Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Trinidad, St. Lucia and Grenada.

If you want to be sure to hit warm waters and hot temps, even in January and February, and have smaller crowds in more tropical and exotic destinations, the Southern Caribbean may be best for you, and worth the flight down to San Juan to begin your cruise.

The spice market in Grenada, the Pitons of St. Lucia, the salt flats of Bonaire – these are very unique phenomena AND you have the perfect sand and bathtub, calm waters.

Click here to see a list of all upcoming Southern Caribbean cruises listed by price from low to high.

    Salt Flats Of Bonaire

What’s the difference between the Caribbean and the Bahamas?

The Bahamas are technically located in the Atlantic ocean.   While ‘Caribbean’ islands are called that because they are located within the Caribbean Sea.

But honestly, where exactly is the line that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean sea?  Don’t they just run together… So, in reality, the Bahamas are farther north than ‘Caribbean islands.   The Bahamas includes Nassau and Freeport.  The water and beaches are simply gorgeous!

The nearest beach is a man-made one 5 miles away that you can get to by bus.

Costa Maya /Mexico – Costa Maya is perfect for water sports lovers. Be it parasailing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, or deep-sea fishing – this is your spot too!

The cruise ports are about 10 miles from the beach resorts. The free beach resorts are Paradise Beach (pictured below) and Mr. Sanchos.

Falmouth /Jamaica- You can ride horseback along the beaches or travel inland via a bamboo gondola. For more adventure, you can get muddy on a dune buggy, bobsled, or canopy your way through the forest all the way to Dunn’s River Falls.

You can take a taxi to Chukka Beach which is just 15-20 minutes east.

Grand Cayman /George Town- You can feed rays here! Grand Cayman is known for its coral reefs, shipwrecks, and beaches. Key West /USA – This island is the southernmost tip of the Florida islands known as the Florida Keys. Its beautiful palm tree-lined beaches have lured presidents, authors, and now cruise passengers.

One of the best ways to explore Key West and it’s world-famous bars is by going on one of their legendary pub crawls led by comedic tour guides!

The public beaches are a little way away from the cruise port so you’ll want to take a cab or rent bikes.

Montego Bay /Jamaica – Go see the amazing Dunn’s River falls that empty directly into the Caribbean sea. You can go white water rafting or river-tubing. The water here is meant to be enjoyed.

Ocho Rios /Jamaica- If you want classic Jamaica with Bob Marley and beaches then this is the place to go. There are Bob Marley cover bands, and tours to visit his mausoleum and pay respect to greatness. In your calm reggae state of mind, you can also float down the Martha Brae River on a bamboo raft.

You can also get to Dunn’s River Falls if your ship stops here as there will be guides selling tours at a lower rate than the cruise line here as well.  For about $45 per person, you can experience the Falmouth Swamp Safari Zoo and the falls with round-trip transportation.

This sweet little goat’s name is Roxanna! She is adorable and you won’t want to miss here if you have the opportunity to stop in Ocho Rios!

Progreso /Mexico – The Yucatan peninsula is a popular tourist destination for its rich Mayan history and central locale. Go check out the Scorpion Reef, the town of Merida which holds the oldest cathedral on the North American continent, or the impressive nearby Mayan archeological sites of Chichen Itza.

You can also book an excursion with roundtrip transportation to the ancient archeological site of Uxmal for $25 per person with the kind guides waiting for you in the cruise port.

Roatan/Mahogany Bay /Honduras – This coastal port has a beautiful beach right along the water where the cruise ship ports. There are cabanas to rent, ski lifts for a panoramic view, and catamarans for sailing and snorkeling. It is all about the beach!

A fun way to do it all is to take one of the tours being offered by the guides in the port.  We personally have taken an island hits tour complete with stops at the lighthouse with panoramic views, the monkey zoo, and lastly West Bay Beach for about $35 per person.
