BayArena

Club: Bayer 04 Leverkusen | Opening: 1958 | Capacity: 30,000

History and description

BayArena, initially called Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, was built in the mid 1950s to replace Bayer’s previous home Bayer Sportplatz.

Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion officially opened on the 2nd of August 1958. It was oval-shaped, had one covered main stand, and could hold about 20,000 visitors.

When Bayer promoted to the Bundesliga in 1979, a new temporary East Stand was built, though more significant improvements were needed to successfully compete at the highest level.

In 1986, the club therefore embarked on a major redevelopment program. Works started with the reconstruction of a new West Stand, continued with the East Stand, and were then completed with both ends, enclosing the entire stadium.

Works were completed in 1997, and resulted in a capacity of 22,500 seats, all covered. One year later the stadium’s name got changed to BayArena.

The new BayArena, however, soon turned out to be too small for the increasing fanbase of the club, and as a result a €70-million expansion project was announced.

Building works began in 2007, and included the addition of a small extra tier, the conversion of part of the seats into standing places, and the construction of a new roof.

The roof supports itself from the outside of the stadium, which means that future capacity increases will be relatively easy.

How to get to the BayArena

The BayArena is located in central Leverkusen where the A1 and A3 motorways intersect.

Even though the stadium lies adjacent to the A1, it does not have its own exit. The stadium is therefore best reached from the A3. Take exit 24 Leverkusen, turn east onto the Willy Brandt Ring, turn left onto the Kalkstraße, turn left again onto the Gustav-Heinemann-Straße, and, after passing underneath the A3, right onto the Bismarckstraße.

Alternatively, take exit 22 Leverkusen-Opladen, turn right onto the Bonner Straße, direct right again onto the Europaring, and, after passing underneath the A3, left onto the Bismarckstraße. Continue for about a kilometre and, after having gone underneath the A1, you will reach the stadium.

The BayArena lies at about 10 minutes walking (crossing the park) from overground metro ( S-Bahn ) stop Leverkusen Mitte. Leverkusen Mitte is served by line 6, which runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf. From both cities the journey is about half an hour.

One can also take a train from Cologne’s main railway station and get off at Leverkusen Schlebusch station (15-minute ride). From there it is a 15-minute walk to the stadium.

Address: Bismarckstraße 122, 51373 Leverkusen

Eat, drink, and sleep near the BayArena

The BayArena is located in a predominantly residential neighbourhood with little around, though Leverkusen’s city centre is only a 15-minute walk away. While Leverkusen does not rank among Germany’s most attractive cities, it does have a few eating and drinking options.

If you wish to stay close to the BayArena, then Lindner Hotel Bayarena will serve you perfectly as it is located inside the stadium building. Other neaby choices are BestWestern Hotel Leverkusen and Hotel Brauhaus Manforter Hof and there is an Ibis Hotel in Leverkusen’s centre, which is slightly cheaper. Click here for an overview of hotels near the BayArena.

If you have a little more time on your hands, you can also consider staying in Cologne or Düsseldorf , much more interesting cities, and take the S-Bahn to the stadium for the match.

Went here to see Leverkusen vs Leipzig in Oktober. Travelled from Dusseldorf by train to Leverkusen and walked through the local park to get to the BayArena.

Here everything runs like clockwork and the mood is very laid back and family friendly. You can use your credit card everywhere so no need for those pesky stadium cards. Great view of the pitch from upper seats and enough terrace action to keep you entertained.

I went to watch Bayer against Bayern Munich last Saturday. I bought the ticket about 3 months in advance. Unfortunately I had to buy a bundle of 3 tickets(one from each category to by able to attend Bayern game). It was still cheaper than buying outside the stadium. Having watched Fortuna dusseldorf earlier the same day I got on a train to Cologne and got off at Leverkusen Mitte station. You can see the stadium from the station. Just cross the park to reach Bay Arena. The game itself was a bit disappointing. Bayern fans were everywhere even in the home stands. They did not have to hide the scarves and shirts. Atmosphere was awesome. Both sets of fans sang for the entire game. They were free match programmes to pick up around the stadium. Afterwards I got on the same train but this time to Cologne. Very nice and modern stadium. Friendly fans. You can not use cash inside the ground. Only cards are accepted(you need to get one card and load it with cash). You can return this card after the game to get your money back.

My first champions league away match that i attended, was at your old Bay Arena Stadium with Arsenal, when we drew 1-1, it was the year that you got to the final in Glasgow and were beaten by Real Madrid. Just recently i only saw your improved stadium and im sad that your old ground structure has gone, i loved the fact that your old floodlights were outside the ground on huge poles leaning in and above the away supporters heads in the ground were ceiling heaters, like the old electric coiled bars you used to see in household electric bar fires. Now our Highbury Ground has gone too, i miss your old ground but ill never forget it I keep an eye on your results and your my favourite club after Arsenal

Best wishes to all staff, players and fans

PS I would be interested in recieving any emails on whats happening or events coming up in the near future

BayArena: Bayer Leverkusen

bayer 04 usa tour

Fynn Korsen / Flickr.com

Though the BayArena has been home to Bayer Leverkusen since 1958, it’s slightly misleading to suggest that the ground that exists now is the same one that opened all those years ago. Back then it was called Ulrich Haberland Stadium and was named after one of the former chairmen of Bayer AG – the pharmaceutical company that founded and owns the club. It used to have a capacity of 20,000.

In the 1980s a remodeling project was undertaken that developed different parts of the stadium at different times. Nowadays the ground is considered to have a very modern and contemporary feel, but in actual fact that was purely coincidental. The demands of a modern football stadium change from decade to decade and in the 1990s, in the middle of construction, they changed once more and so the design plan of the new ground changed too.

BayArena Photos

BayArena Seating Plan and Where to Sit

bayer 04 usa tour

Three sides of the stadium are two-tiered sections separated by a row of executive boxes. These are called Nordbereich, Ostbereich, and Westbereich thanks to their geographical location. There is one other section of the ground, the Sudbereich, that does not match up with the rest of the stadium. That’s because it is where a hotel is located, with a number of the rooms overlooking the pitch.

Bayer Leverkusen Ticket Prices

To be totally honest, the ticket pricing at the BayArena is a complicated affair, but at least they give you the information unlike most other European teams. Tickets are broken into four different categories with different prices available depending on your age. There are further prices for disabled supporters. We have done our best to simplify it a little below:

  • Adults: Cat .I = €50 / Cat .II = €40 / Cat .III = €30 / Cat .IV = €15
  • Concessions: Cat .I = €43 / Cat .II = €34 / Cat .III = €25 / Cat .IV = €11

How To Get Bayer Leverkusen Tickets

As with most major football clubs, Leverkusen’s official website is the best place to start for tickets. After that you can call the ticket office directly or pick up tickets from official retailers throughout the city.

Getting To BayArena

Leverkusen is in the North Rhine-Westphalia area of Germany. Here are some of the usual transportation options you’ll want to consider using to get to the ground:

Train – The journey from London to Leverkusen takes around five hours by train. You’ll want to get the Eurostar from St. Pancras International to Bruxelles-Midi before changing onto an ICE train to Koln. From there you’ll get an internal train to Leverkusen Mitte and you’ll be able to see the stadium from the train station.

Bus – Most local buses in Leverkusen will stop on Bismarckstraße near to the ground. Bus numbers 201, 233 and 255 are the ones to look out for.

Car – BayArena is pretty much in the middle of Leverkusen and can be found next to where the A1 and A3 motorways come together. There’s no exit for the ground on the A1, so take the A3 and leave at exit 24 before following the signs.

By Air – Cologne/Bonn airport is about an hour away from Leverkusen by train, whilst Dusseldorf Airport is more like an hour and a half away and also has train connections.

Taxi – A taxi from Leverkusen Mitte to BayArena will take just over five minutes and should cost in the region of €9.

BayArena Hotels

Leverkusen isn’t one of Germany’s more popular cities to visit, but they’ve still got more than a few hotels. Here are some of our favoured options:

Lindner Hotel BayArena - £70+

Leverkusen is something of an industrial city as far as its origins are concerned, so there are a number of decent boozers you might want to pop into before you go to see a match:

Winners’ Place im Lindner Leverkusen

Carmens taverna.

The modernity of the ground means that the facilities here are excellent. There are all of the usual places you’d expect to be able to buy food and drinks in the ground, plus the views are great from pretty much everywhere.

Hospitality

bayer 04 usa tour

There are 7 match day hospitality experiences on offer at BayArena, but unless you want to sign up for the year then the one that will be most appropriate for you is probably the Event Box North, which can be booked along with accommodation at the hotel which adjoins it. It comes with a dedicated member of service staff to look after you, hot and cold buffet food, four car parking spaces for up to 14 guests and brilliant views. If there are more of you then the Event Lodge East offers pretty much the same deal but can accommodate between 30-60 guests, minus the hotel connection.

Private Hire

There are no less than 11 suites and executive boxes that are available for use for things like conferences, product launches and business meetings. If you’re interested then drop the club a line and they’ll let you know what exactly you can do. They can cater for anything up to 800 people.

Stadium Tours & Museum

Tours of the BayArena operate on a regular basis and you can do numerous different types of tour. There’s the Public Tour that takes you to all of the places you’d expect, such as the subs’ bench and the dressing rooms. There’s also a Private Tour option on offer when you can see things like the hospitality areas with a more exclusive feel. There are also tours on match days where you can see preparations getting underway. Tours last between 45 minutes to an hour and a half and cost upwards of €10 for adults, €8 for concessions and €6 for kids. At the time of writing there is no museum but the tour does take you to areas containing Bayer Leverkusen memorabilia.

About Bayer Leverkusen

bayer 04 usa tour

Bayer AG aren’t just Bayer Leverkusen’s owners, they’re also the main reason the club even exists. The team was formed in 1904 by employees of the pharmaceutical company who wrote to the managers and requested support for a sports team. They got it, and Turn- und Spielverein Bayer 04 Leverkusen was formed. In 1999 the football part was separated from the athletics, basketball and gymnastics departments of TSV Bayer 04 and became simply Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Bayer have never won the Bundesliga, though they have finished as runners-up in the top-flight on five occasions, including four seasons in a row from 1996-1997 to 2001-2002. They’ve won the DFB Pokal/German Cup once, the UEFA Cup once and lost in the Champions League final once. Leverkusen have a clean-cut image and the BayArena is considered to be the most family friendly stadium in the Bundesliga. This has led Bayer’s rivals to refer to them as a ‘plastic club’ that exists purely as a plaything of their sponsors and owners.

BayArena History

bayer 04 usa tour

Opened in 1958 with a 20,000 seat capacity, a rebuilding of the stadium to change it into a more modern facility began in 1986 and was finally completed eleven years later. the original design was based on the same design as the Ruhrstadion in Bochum, home of VfL Bochum. They wanted a steep, single-tier stadium without a running track. The idea was that the club would build the East section in 1986, the Western part in 1989 and the Northern area in 1991.

The relative success of the World Cup in the USA in 1994 led to the idea of adding what was called a ‘Family Street’ to the ground. It was the first such family friendly area in German football. It was considered to be a huge success and in the 1996-1997 season the area was moved to a larger part of the ground. The BayArena was also the first ground in the country to become all-seater.

Future Developments

bayer 04 usa tour

In 2009 the ground underwent more refurbishment, and new scoreboards were added in 2020 along with a few other updates, meaning there are no immediate plans to change anything any further.

The BayArena is a football stadium in North Rhine-Westphalia, home to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Recently renovated in 2009 at a cost of €70 million, the ground has a league match capacity of 30,210 and is in the process of becoming a 5-star UEFA stadium.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Stadium Guide

Bayarena history.

The BayArena is the home of Bayern Leverkusen and the stadium today from the outside bears little to no resemblance to the original ground which opened on the 2nd of August 1958.

Known then as Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, Leverkusen’s first version of the BayArena had a capacity of 22,500 before being expanded to 27,000 in 1986. Numerous additions were made to the ground in the 1990s as well including a hotel, a new scoreboard and VIP seating.

Both the East and West stands were reconstructed which resulted in a fully-enclosed stadium. Essentially becoming a pure footballing Arena, the ground’s name was changed to BayArena in 1997 to reflect this new direction.

The gamble paid off and by the mid 2000s the club began to grow and even reached the Champions League final in 2001 – 2002 season before falling slightly short against Real Madrid .

An increase in the club’s revenue was reinvested in the stadium in 2008 as part of a Modernisation program and it was this stadium redevelopment that gives the BayArena it’s iconic structure and design as we see it today.

The capacity includes 2,500 terrace spots and the colour of the seats was changed from green to red, reflecting Bayern Leverkusen’s traditional colours.

The 70 million euro redevelopment also saw the addition of a large cylindrical roof, and the first Bundesliga Match was held on the 15th August 2009 against 1899 Hoffenheim , with the German national team taking on South Africa in a friendly a a month later to mark the stadiums redevelopment.

For now the stadium is complete but Bayer 04 Leverkusen are always exploring new ways to enhance the match day experience.

In April 2013 they announced plans to create a Multimedia experience with the installation of over 500 HD monitors and 350 wireless internet access points throughout the stands, as well as an interactive app which has exclusive content, games and player ratings for fans during the match.

BayArena is comprised of four sections which correspond to points on the compass: Nordbereich, Ostbereich, Sudbereich and Westbereich.

Matchday Experience

Bayarena away section.

Away fans who make the trip to BayArena are housed within the south-west corner between the south stand which contains a lot of the executive boxes and western section which is regarded as the main stand.

Capable of seating around 2,500 travelling supporters, the area is fenced off from the home section and is essentially located opposite the Leverkusen Ultras in the north stand in order to create a better atmosphere throughout the stadium.

The fact that the area feels relatively compact when full helps also helps create a sense of camaraderie amongst the travelling faithful. Spanning across two-tiers with the lower section being much larger, occasionally away fans are permitted to sit in the adjacent block if the demand requires it and the away allocation needs to be increased.

Best Pubs near ground

One of the smallest city’s in the Rhine Region with a population of around 161,000, Leverkusen hasn’t got the most diverse range of watering holes but thanks to its working-class traditions there are a good number of traditional pubs around the city.

The map below outlines a few but to be honest most fans prefer to drink at the stadium itself.

Food - Places to eat

BayArena is famously the first stadium in Europe to have a McDonalds restaurant at the ground, and predictably it usually does a roaring trade on matchdays.

There’s also the Pille Sportbar which has a fair selection of food, but most of the options are to be found in the concourses. Run by Bayer Gastronomie, fans can purchase the usual fast-food options such as fries, pretzels and hot dogs although this must be done so using the cashless card system.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen Club Shop

Exterior of Bayer 04 Leverkusen club shop

Bayer Leverkusen operate 2 club shops around the city in addition to their own official online store: There is one located at the BayArena known as the stadium store which is open for a few hours on matchdays as well as one within the city centre at “Wiesdorfer place 9, 51373, Leverkusen.”

The opening times for the “Leverkusen City” shop are listed below.

Opening Hours

How to get to BayArena

Where is bayarena.

Leverkusen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, located in the West of Germany near to the Borders of Belguim and Netherlands. BayArena is located out of town within an area known as Stadtpark.

BayArena is conveniently located nearby to where the A1 and A3 stretch of motorways intersect, although A1 does not have an exit specifically for the stadium which makes the latter the better choice.

The address of BayArena is as follows:

  • Bismarckstraße 122, 51373 Leverkusen

Located out of town there are numerous car-parks around the stadium which can be used on matchdays, most of which are free. One such example is “Kurtekotten”.

The closest International flight hub to Leverkusen is Cologne Bonn-Airport which is around 26km South of the city.

As the seventh largest passenger airport in Germany serving over 9.3 million passengers in 2012 alone, the airport is well connected to the rest of Europe, which makes seeing Bayer Leverkusen play football a very easy proposition.

Once you have landed you can travel to Leverkusen in 15 minutes via the S-Bahn train line which was mentioned in the “Train section” above.

Hotels Near BayArena

The nearest hotel to the BayArena is the 200 room Linder Hotel which is on the site of the stadium next to the McDonalds which was built at around a similar time.

We’ve bemoaned the lack of traditional city centre in Leverkusen already in this guide so I won’t go back into it in more detail but what I will say is that it doesn’t make recommending an area to stay very easy.

As all I can give you is names of Hotels, I recommend Hotel Fück or Best Western Leoso Hotel Leverkusen.

How to Buy Bayer Leverkusen Tickets

One of the best storylines of the 2023/24 football season comes from Germany, where Bayer Leverkusen are the favourites to win the Bundesliga for the very first time.

Xabi Alonso’s side recently cruised to a 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich to move 5 points clear of the Bavarian giants. There was a buoyant atmosphere at the BayArena and there’s a huge sense of optimism among the club’s supporters that Die Schwarzroten are closing in on a maiden Bundesliga title.

We take a look at a few of Bayer Leverkusen ’s remaining games this season and how you can see the team take to the pitch in their bid to claim the throne of German football.

Bayer Leverkusen are now unbeaten in each of their 31 games across all competitions this season and have opened up a five point gap at the top of the Bundesliga: ◉ 27 wins ◉ 4 draws ◉ 0 defeats ◎ 93 goals ◎ 18 conceded ◎ 15 clean sheets If they avoid defeat in their next… pic.twitter.com/r0bkOe1PBt — Squawka (@Squawka) February 10, 2024

Bayer Leverkusen vs FSV Mainz – 23 February, 2024

Get your Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz tickets with SeatPick, starting from €60.

The next home game at the BayArena sees Die Schwarzroten take on lowly Mainz . This David versus Goliath encounter sees the Bundesliga leaders take on a team fighting relegation: Leverkusen are unbeaten in the league, while Mainz have picked up just a single win all season.

Check out our interactive BayArena seating map to find your ideal seats as Bayer Leverkusen look to take one step closer towards capturing Bundesliga honours.

Bayer Leverkusen vs 1899 Hoffenheim – 30 March, 2024

Bayer Leverkusen vs Hoffenheim tickets are available for purchase from €50 via SeatPick.

By the time this fixture rolls around, Bayer Leverkusen will have played in the UEFA Europa League knockouts and started preparing for a showdown with Fortuna Dusseldorf in the DFB Pokal semi-finals.

Hoffenheim are in contention to qualify for European football, but didn’t win any of their first five games of 2024. Leverkusen, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run beyond 30 games with victory over Bayern Munich.

This clash comes at a crucial time for both teams, and tickets can be acquired for as little as €50 right here at SeatPick.

Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen – 20 April, 2024

Buy Borussia Dortmund vs Bayer Leverkusen tickets with SeatPick, starting from €170 each.

Unsurprisingly, tickets are more expensive for Leverkusen’s visit to Signal Iduna Park where they’ll face Borussia Dortmund . This is arguably the toughest fixture remaining for the men in black and red, with BVB also in the mix for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Xabi Alonso had a positive record against Dortmund during his time as a Bayern player, though the former Spain midfielder hasn’t yet gone head-to-head with Die Borussen from the technical area.

This should make for a fascinating affair and the famous ‘Yellow Wall’ will undoubtedly be at its loudest for this meeting. SeatPick has unrivalled access to all the best Dortmund vs Leverkusen tickets, so be sure to browse our inventory today!

Bayer Leverkusen vs VfB Stuttgart – 27 April, 2024

Tickets for this Bundesliga match are starting from €99 at SeatPick.

In their penultimate home game of the league campaign, this may be one of Bayer Leverkusen’s tougher tests as Stuttgart make the journey to the east of Germany.

Stuttgart narrowly avoided relegation last season but have been a different animal this term, winning 14 of their 21 games and sitting in third place ahead of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig in mid-February.

Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Augsburg – 18 May, 2024

Secure your Bayer Leverkusen vs Augsburg tickets with the help of SeatPick, from €140.

The season comes to a close in May, and Bayer 04 are set to conclude their league commitments with a clash at home to Augsburg . It is very plausible that Leverkusen may have wrapped up the Bundesliga title prior to the final day of the season, though the prospective celebrations ought to be of enormous proportions.

Die Schwarzroten are in prime position to clinch league honours for the first time ever, and those associated with the club are on the brink of euphoria.

Bayer Leverkusen's per-game ranking across Europe's big five leagues this season: ◉ Most points (2.6) ◉ Most forward passes (199.5) ◉ Most Big Chances created (3.3) ◉ Most possession won final ⅓ (7.1) ◉ Most high turnovers (7) Everyone is falling in with Xabi Alonso. 😍 pic.twitter.com/vA39CKMZsa — Squawka (@Squawka) February 12, 2024

2024 memorial tournament prop bet picks and pga tour predictions, share this article.

bayer 04 usa tour

A stellar 3-week stretch of the PGA Tour schedule begins this week with the 2024 Memorial Tournament , the last event before the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. As a signature event, most of the game’s best players will be in the field at Muirfield Village, all vying for a victory handshake from tournament host Jack Nicklaus on Sunday. The 1st round from Dublin, Ohio, begins on Thursday morning.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets from BetMGM Sportsbook among the 2024 Memorial Tournament odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

The top-ranked golfer in the world and in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, Scottie Scheffler , comes in as the betting favorite once again at +350. Xander Schauffele has the 2nd-best odds (+900) and is also ranked 2nd by Golfweek/Sagarin, followed by Rory McIlroy (+1000), who’s 3rd in betting odds and the latest rankings.

Muirfield has been renovated multiple times over the years and now plays at 7,585 yards as a par 72. Viktor Hovland won the Memorial last year with a score of 7-under-par, 12 shots worse than Patrick Cantlay’s winning score (19-under) in 2019. The rough is long and penalizing, which makes hitting approaches into the small, firm greens even more difficult when missing the fairway.

Memorial Tournament – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 7:50 p.m. ET.

Patrick Cantlay (+400)

Cantlay is a 2-time champion at this course and also has 2 other top-5 finishes since 2018. His game isn’t in peak form right now, but his course history makes him a worthy bet for a top-5 finish again this week.

Ludvig Aberg (+350)

Assuming Aberg is fully healthy, he’s more than capable of cracking the top 5 at Jack’s place. It’ll be his 1st time playing the Memorial Tournament, but that didn’t impact him at all at the Masters when it was his 1st time seeing Augusta National.

Memorial Tournament – Top-10 picks

Collin morikawa (+105).

Morikawa is on a hot streak coming into the week, finishing 4th in each of his last 2 starts. His ball-striking is back and if he gets even an average performance on the greens, he’ll be in contention.

Sahith Theegala (+275)

Theegala struggled at the RBC Canadian Open last week and surprisingly missed the cut, but he had just finished 12th at the PGA Championship not long before. Perhaps a longer course like Muirfield will fit him better; he finished 5th here in 2022.

Corey Conners (+300)

Conners is always in danger of his putter going ice cold, but with how well he hits his irons, he’s going to give himself plenty of birdie opportunities. His best finish at Muirfield was a T-13 in 2022 and he’s made the cut in 4 of 5 years.

Memorial Tournament – Top-20 picks

Will zalatoris (+160).

This is either a good buy-low spot for Zalatoris or a bit of a risk if he isn’t actually healthy. He showed signs of being back to his usual form earlier this year and his iron game is still on point (14th in SG: approach), but he needs to be better on and around the green.

Keegan Bradley (+138)

Bradley is heating up, finishing 21st or better in each of his last 3 starts – including a T-2 at the Charles Schwab Challenge two weeks ago. He’s 21st in SG: tee-to-green, evidence of how well he’s hitting the ball coming into the week.

Russell Henley (+110)

Henley may not have the desired length for a course like Muirfield but he’s going to keep it in the fairways and his short game is excellent. Other than SG: off the tee, he ranks in the top 37 in every other category, including 35th in approach.

Memorial Tournament – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Corey Conners (-120) vs. Tom Kim (-105)

Kim is starting to turn things around, finishing 4th in Canada last week, but he missed the cut here last year – his only appearance in the Memorial. Conners is 4-for-5 in cuts made at Jack’s place and finished 13th 2 years ago.

Justin Thomas (-125) vs. Tommy Fleetwood (+100)

Fleetwood doesn’t have a great track record here, with his last 2 starts (2017 and 2015) resulting in missed cuts. Thomas is playing well right now, with finishes of T-5, T-21 and T-8 in his last 3 starts.

Memorial Tournament – Top Asian

Byeong hun an (+333).

This is a closely contested market with all 5 players between +300 and +400 odds, led by Hideki Matsuyama at the shortest number. Matsuyama hasn’t played much (or very well) since the Valero Texas Open in April, and An is in the midst of the best season of his career.

Memorial Tournament – First-round leader

Viktor hovland (+2200).

Hovland was the champion here last year and though it’s mostly been a disappointing season for him, he finished 3rd at the PGA Championship last month. It’s easy to see a scenario where he goes low on Thursday and keeps up that momentum.

Shane Lowry (+5000)

Lowry shot 69 in the opening round last year, which put him tied for 3rd and only 2 shots off the lead. He’s in good form and can weather some difficult scoring conditions like the ones at Muirfield.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now !

More expert prop bet predictions

Will there be a playoff yes: (+350).

Hovland won in a playoff last year, the 6th playoff at Muirfield in the last 10 years. For whatever reason, this course yields close finishes and we’ll bet on another one this year.

For the first time in five years, Manchester United is headed to the United States for a preseason tour.

The Red Devils have confirmed they will head Stateside in the summer of 2023, returning for the first time since a 2018 tour that included a match against Liverpool at Michigan Stadium that drew over 100,000 fans.

“This will be our first visit to the U.S. for five years and everyone at the club is looking forward to it, especially the players, who love the high-quality facilities, the welcoming atmosphere and passionate support of our large U.S. fanbase,” said John Murtough, Manchester United’s football director.

Bayer Leverkusen’s undefeated treble seemed inevitable but it turns out they are beatable

DUBLIN, IRELAND - MAY 22: Xabi Alonso, Head Coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, applauds the fans after the team's defeat in the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 final match between Atalanta BC and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Dublin Arena on May 22, 2024 in Dublin, Ireland. (Photo by Alex Grimm/Getty Images)

At the end of a dream season, Bayer Leverkusen ran into a nightmare.

For 51 games, they had been close to perfect. No matter the opponents, they had the answer. Even when they have not been at their best, there has always been a late goal or a hero who would emerge.

Not this time. Not in the 52nd of their 53 matches.

Defeat, their first in a competitive fixture since May 27 last year, to Atalanta last night was certainly shocking.

Leverkusen were expected just to collect the Europa League trophy at the Republic of Ireland’s Aviva Stadium on the way back to Germany, before heading on towards an unbeaten treble in Saturday’s domestic cup final. That seemed like this team’s destiny. But football is rarely that simple and a Leverkusen loss actually seemed oddly inevitable from very early in the game.

Credit Gian Piero Gasperini for that. He found answers no other coach has this season. Atalanta’s waspish press not only disrupted Leverkusen’s flow of possession forward, but also managed to neutralise Granit Xhaka ’s influence at the base of midfield.

Xabi Alonso’s players made mistakes, certainly, but their biggest problem was a lack of rhythm; they were never allowed to play.

“We didn’t find our way into our game,” said centre-back Jonathan Tah , their captain. “They were more aggressive in the duels, left us very little space and therefore deserved to win against us today.”

bayer 04 usa tour

It was a curt appraisal, but an accurate one. Leverkusen did lack aggression as they were beaten 3-0. Or at least, the only energy they showed came in moments of frustration, as their inability to control the ball or use it in any meaningful way started to create a clear tension. Florian Wirtz was prickly and agitated. Jeremie Frimpong , always so full of life, was lukewarm and marginalised from the game.

Nothing was normal.

Given everything that has been achieved this season, it seems churlish to criticise Alonso for that or to judge his team selection harshly. After all, how often have Leverkusen won this season by being experimental? The team he picked on Wednesday had been good enough to beat Roma in the Stadio Olimpico in the semi-final’s first leg. But this time the balance seemed off and that is where the questions come from.

Edmond Tapsoba prefers to play on the left of a back three. The passing angles from there are better for him, he has said in the past, and he likes the freedom of being able to cut inside and see the whole of the pitch. Was moving him to accommodate Piero Hincapie worth the comfort that was lost?

Josip Stanisic has had a brilliant season in many ways and has played a vital role in relief. Had Frimpong played there in his more orthodox right-wing-back role instead of higher up, Ademola Lookman might have been asked to do more than bite in between the Leverkusen centre-backs and score one of the great hat-tricks in European finals history. Might that be one Alonso would like to have back?

A HAT-TRICK FOR LOOKMAN IN THE FINAL! TAKE A BOW 👏 📺 Watch the #UELfinal live on @tntsports & @discoveryplusUK pic.twitter.com/wpJS9luDBN — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) May 22, 2024

Truthfully, Lookman was so good that it probably would not have mattered.

There is another point, though: Atalanta played better because, on the night, they were better set up for this game by their coach. Gasperini is admired across Europe for good reason, and this was the latest demonstration of why he is held in such high regard; his game plan was pitch-perfect. Atalanta were stunningly superior.

Leverkusen understood that and there were no sour grapes.

“It’s extremely tough to take but we have to be honest with ourselves,” midfielder Robert Andrich said. “It was deserved today, so we have to go out with our heads held high and congratulate Atalanta. They definitely deserved it more than us today.”

People tend to get sick of good stories. They certainly tire of football teams who win a lot. So, there might even be a backlash — some delight at a bit of comeuppance for Alonso, of whom so many complimentary things have been said. That must be particularly tempting given the optics — Alonso, young, urbane and cool, tripped up by 66-year-old Gasperini in his dad-denim and rumpled cagoule.

bayer 04 usa tour

But it seems hardly fair — especially as nobody from Leverkusen mistook Gasperini for anything other than a maestro.

Alonso was incredibly respectful of Atalanta in the build-up, warning his side of the dangers they faced and speaking publicly about his admiration for his opposite number. In defeat he was graceful, praising how quickly Atalanta recovered numbers behind the ball and how little space and time they allowed his players.

“We will learn,” he promised. “We had a big chance and we put everything toward today, but it didn’t go as planned. We were not at our best level; everyone — myself included.”

Perhaps that is what makes Alonso so compelling.

This has been a rare season, but it seems unlikely to be an outlier in a coaching career that is still in its first full season at first-team level. Wednesday’s result prompts questions and it will demand evolution. Gasperini has now created a precedent that other coaches will surely follow — a swarming press aimed at the right players has been shown to stop Leverkusen and inside forwards of a certain type can cause them serious problems.

So, what does Alonso do next? What is his answer to having Xhaka swamped? How does he cope when the possession coming out of the defensive third does not suit his attacking players who need space to be dangerous? When a game is not going well and momentum is not on his side, as it never was in Dublin, what tools can he develop to change that?

In the modern era, that is the coaching challenge. Those who belong among the very best are able to constantly stay ahead in that race, always managing to reinvent quicker than they can be contained or copied.

There is no reason to believe Alonso will not one day belong in that group. Next season, he will still be at Leverkusen, with a group who are older and wiser, and supplemented by the added lustre of being a Champions League club again, and defending Bundesliga champions.

No, Wednesday night did not go well. In a way, given that it prevented a unique history from being written, it was devastating.

But perhaps it makes the future, and what Alonso does next, all the more intriguing.

The venue The venue

Rose Bowl Pasadena, California It was built for ‘The Granddaddy of Them All’, as the Rose Bowl Game – the annual college football showdown – has become known, and the striking stadium has steadfastly stood the test of time. Eighteen months before USA 1994, it staged the Super Bowl for the fifth time, equalling the record held by Miami’s Orange Bowl, with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith inspiring the Dallas Cowboys to a 52–17 thrashing of the Buffalo Bills.

bayer 04 usa tour

The Rose Bowl was home to the LA Aztecs for two years from 1978, during which time Rinus Michels sat at their controls and George Best and Johan Cruyff were on their roster, while Henri Michel coached France to victory over a Brazil side featuring Dunga there in the gold-medal match at the 1984 Olympics. Aside from sport, it has hosted Americafest – the nation’s biggest Independence Day firework celebration – since the 1920s and sell-out concerts from the likes of Depeche Mode, Guns N' Roses, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Journey, Pink Floyd, The Cure and The Rolling Stones.

The match The match

The Stars and Stripes hadn’t won a World Cup game in 44 years. Pele had backed Los Cafeteros to win the competition. It told in the first 30, with Valderrama, Rincon and Asprilla flickering their carnival genius and only Meola’s rapid reflexes – and the woodwork – preserving deadlock. Thereafter, however, Ramos and Harkes began to decrypt Colombia and from the former’s imaginative through-ball, Stewart cannily stroked the ball into a tiny pocket inside the post for the winner.

Trivia Trivia

Tony Meola, a promising soccer striker and baseball center fielder, was drafted out of high school by the MLB’s New York Yankees. He ultimately elected against signing a contract with them and went on to become a goalkeeper, as his father had been in the Italian Serie B. After becoming the youngest captain in World Cup history at USA 1994 – Meola was only 21 – he immediately went for try-outs as a placekicker with the NFL’s New York Jets!

Alexi Lalas was a guitarist in The Gypsies, a rock band who opened for Hootie & The Blowfish during a European tour. The USA centre-back released an album, Woodland , during the World Cup featuring the track California, which he played before USA’s first outing in ‘The Golden State’ against Colombia.

Quotes Quotes

“Colombia was favourite. Pele had picked Colombia to win the tournament. Everything was against us. To pull off a result – 2-1 – against them was fantastic. That was when we were convinced we could compete at that level. Before that we still had a little bit of a doubt. We proved not only to ourselves but to the US nation that we could be successful. Maybe that was one of the reasons professional soccer is where it is today in the USA.” John Harkes

bayer 04 usa tour

“That magical summer changed my life. I lived the power of what a World Cup can do to an individual. When that final whistle blew and we beat Colombia, who had been predicted as one of the favourites to win the World Cup, it was a magical moment at the Rose Bowl. 100,000 people, the flags and all the iconic images will be something I’ll never forget.” Alexi Lalas

Romania 3-2 Argentina Romania 3-2 Argentina

Dumitrescu (11), Batistuta (pen (16), Dumitrescu (18), Hagi (58), Balbo (75) Last 16 Attendance: 90,469

Romania: Florin Prunea; Gheorghe Mihali, Miodrag Belodedici, Daniel Prodan; Dan Petrescu, Ioan Lupescu, Gheorghe Popescu, Dorinel Munteanu, Tibor Selymes; Gheorghe Hagi (Constantin Galca), Ilie Dumitrescu (Corneliu Papura). Coach: Alfio Basile

‘Maradona versus The Maradona of the Carpathians’ ultimately belied its billing, tactical and climatic norms, and the odds. ‘El Diego’ watched it up in the stands, working for Argentinian television. Anghel Iordanescu, in the absence of suspended striker Florin Raducioiu, fielded an unheard 3-7-0 formation. Despite kicking off at 1:30pm, under California’s searing sun, it was an electric-paced, end-to-end encounter. And little Romania, who had never won a knockout-phase game at the tournament, stunned an Argentina side that had won two and reached three of the previous four World Cup finals.

bayer 04 usa tour

Alfio Basile’s men had their moments, Ortega’s devilish dribbling causing problems and Batistuta winning a penalty, which he himself converted, with Maradona-esque trickery. Ultimately, however, they proved insufficient to overthrow the extrasensory, express counter-attacks of Hagi, Dumitrescu and Co.

Hagi and Popescu were such good friends they bought a plot of land together to construct holiday cottages in Poiana Brasov, a skiing resort in the Carpathian mountains. They drew lots to see who would build above and who below. Hagi selected one of the two pieces of paper Popescu presented him with. It read ‘above’. Only years later did Popescu, who was afraid of encountering brown bears, admit that both pieces of paper had ‘above’ on them! Fortunately it didn’t affect their relationship, with Hagi and Popescu married to sisters, Marilena and Luminita.

While Romania’s squad included players from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Genoa, PSV and Valencia, star man Hagi spent the 1993/94 season at Brescia in the Italian Serie B. His performances Stateside prompted Barcelona to sign the former Real Madrid man, making him one of the first players to represent both Spanish superpowers.

“This is the greatest event celebrated by our people since the revolution. It’s also the greatest moment in our footballing history.” Anghel Iordanescu “Everyone talks about Pep Guardiola playing Messi as a false nine, but Iordanescu was the first coach to do it and I was the false nine. It was an inspirational move. I’m proud to have been a part of that.” Ilie Dumitrescu “It was a great performance. They couldn’t deal with our football. But I do still have one regret: Maradona didn’t play. We really wanted to beat Argentina with Maradona on the pitch.” Gheorghe Hagi

The final didn’t belong to ‘Shortie’ of the ‘Divine Ponytail’. At its end, a man who went into the competition without a club, and playing up front for his local church’s team, was raising his arms towards the heavens as Baggio hung his head.

Franco Baresi went off injured during Italy’s second group game. He underwent knee surgery two days later but, because it was too late for Arrigo Sacchi to summon a replacement, stayed in the US to cheer on his team-mates. Implausibly, after one of the most miraculous recoveries in World Cup history, he played 120 minutes of the final only 22 days later.

Brazil were in disarray heading into USA 1994, so their shot-callers arranged for national god Ayrton Senna to kick off a friendly against a Paris Saint-Germain XI including Bixente Lizarazu, Assis (Ronaldinho’s brother), David Ginola and George Weah 58 days before USA 1994 began. Afterwards, the three-time Formula One world champion went for dinner with the Brazilians. “He spoke to us as a group and one-on-one to give us advice and encouragement,” recalled Taffarel. “He captivated all of us, he made us believe.” Eleven days later Senna tragically died while leading the San Marino Grand Prix. Immediately after winning the final, Dunga and team-mates proudly paraded a banner reading: “Senna, we accelerated together, the [fourth title] is ours!”

“We’ve fought hard, we’ve reached this point – let’s do the same as those Japanese, the Kawasakis.” Ricardo Rocha , in the dressing room before the game, confusing the Kamikazes – the iconic World War II pilots – with the motorcycle manufacturers! “When I was preparing to save Baggio’s penalty, I got this feeling in my head that the World Cup was ending right there. If Baggio had scored, Bebeto still had a penalty to win it for us. I didn’t know if I would save it or he would miss, but I just knew that Baggio would kick the last ball at that World Cup. It was an incredible sensation. I thanked God for giving me such a moment. There’s a really cool photo of Baggio with his head down, devastated, and me on my knees euphoric.” Taffarel
