Applebee's again? How the restaurant entered Southern Miss, Tennessee baseball conversation

baseball bus tours 2023

Southern Miss baseball can finally eat good in the neighborhood.

The Golden Eagles are coming to Knoxville a year after hosting a super regional against Tennessee baseball, an NCAA decision that was so debated it trickled humorously online into the fact that Hattiesburg lacked an Applebee's while Knoxville has multiple.

That's not an issue this year and a dinner at Applebee's is within grasp for Southern Miss.

“I haven’t had Applebee’s in a long time so I might," Southern Miss coach Christian Ostrander said Monday when asked if he would stop by an Applebee's. "I’ve heard it’s good over there.”

No. 1 seed Tennessee is hosting the Knoxville Regional , which includes No. 2-seeded Southern Miss and begins Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The teams played a terrific three-game Hattiesburg Super Regional last season that ended with the Vols going to Omaha but started with internet fodder.

How Applebee's entered Tennessee baseball vs. Southern Miss clash

Tennessee and Southern Miss both believed each had the best case to host a super regional in 2023. Anything from stadium size to hotels to a coach retiring to conference membership to, well, the number of Applebee's was debated.

Hattiesburg does not have an Applebee's after its lone location closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nearest location in Laurel, Mississippi, is about a half-hour drive from Pete Taylor Park. That fact became a punchline leading into the super regional as a metric the NCAA must have ignored in its decision-making process. The joke behind the fact was largely and continually missed .

The City of Hattiesburg got involved though its official account on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Our thriving economy is home to more than 200 local restaurants," a post read. "Granted, it may not be the bourbon street steak and oreo shake you love.”

Hattiesburg restaurateur Robert St. John posted a video on social media encouraging fans to feast at the city's many local cuisine options in the absence of an Applebee's.

The Applebee's punchline lives on for Southern Miss baseball

Applebee's has three locations in Knoxville. That is hardly any indication of some undying devotion Tennessee fans have for the chain restaurant.

But that is how it was seen in 2023, as Southern Miss fans gravitated to the joke as a reality. Some fans held up signs about Applebee's to the Tennessee bus as it pulled up the ballpark before the super regional. The song "Fancy Like" by Walker Hayes played before games for its references to Applebee's.

Away it went and on it goes.

"I heard they got one so I might have to stop by," Golden Eagles pitcher Billy Oldham said.

HOSTING: Tennessee baseball earns No. 1 overall seed, hosting Knoxville Regional for NCAA Tournament

The Vols ultimately prevailed against USM last season, losing the first game and falling behind in the second before winning the second and third games to go to the College World Series. Tennessee (50-11) enters this postseason without any worry over a hosting debate if it advanced to a super regional for the fourth straight season.

It might have to conquer Southern Miss (40-18) again in the process.

"They were not too happy about coming to Hattiesburg so now we’re going there," Oldham said. "We’ll see what it’s like at their field.”

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge

Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.

grayson-murray-cwc-g.png

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.

A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.

Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.

When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.

"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."

Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery.

"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."

Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."

The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.

"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.

The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.

Birmingham-Southern

The Birmingham-Southern baseball team celebrates its super regional victory against Denison University on Saturday, May 25. The baseball team plays in the Division III College Baseball World Series beginning May 31, the same day that Birmingham-Southern College will cease operations. Joseph Goodman

At schools like Alabama and Auburn, a spot in the College World Series would be an all-expenses paid trip to Omaha, Nebraska.

Coaches would be in line for major bonuses to their salaries plus contract extensions.

That’s not how it works for Birmingham-Southern College, which is shutting down on the same day that the Panthers will begin playing in the championship finals of the Division III national baseball tournament.

The bittersweet story of the Birmingham-Southern baseball team has captured hearts across the country. I’m hoping that some of the Panthers’ new fans can help foot the bill for the team’s trip to Eastlake, Ohio. Someone’s gotta chip in a couple dimes because it’s certainly not going to be the school.

Birmingham-Southern was set to close at the end of the month, but the baseball team is competing in the D-III World Series beginning on May 31. The team returns to Birmingham from its super regional victory on Sunday and then flies out to Northwest Ohio on Wednesday. The Division III College World Series runs May 31 to June 6 at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake, Ohio.

GOODMAN: Birmingham-Southern is going down swinging

Birmingham-Southern swept its super regional series against Denison University on Saturday. The second game of the three-game series was a thrilling 7-6 victory that came down to the last out. An email from a family member of a player on the Birmingham-Southern team hit my inbox that night. It was from a grandmother. She made a great point. Here’s the message from Cathy McCain:

“Since the school will be closed as the team travels to the World Series, it seems that all travel and coaches pay will be privately funded. If that’s true, who can you shame into helping? I’m a grandmother of a team member. I took funds from IRA in an effort to keep school open. I know others sacrificed to support. Surely the state, city, county or other community members can help them make the most of the Series…Please make a last ditch appeal to the community.”

Consider it done, Cathy.

The NCAA pays for teams to travel to its championship events, but if you want to help the Birmingham-Southern baseball team have a memorable experience there is a GoFundMe account set up for the team .

GOODMAN: Inside an ‘insane’ day of food poisoning and history for Birmingham-Southern baseball

Grandma Cathy’s email about coaching salaries reminds me of a conversation I had with Birmingham-Southern assistant coach JD Hulse last week. I asked Hulse where he was going to work after the baseball team’s run was over. He didn’t know.

Hulse said he was devoting all of his energy into supporting the team and then would worry about his future after it was all over.

Hulse has a family to support. He’s a father to two small daughters. The inspiring story of the Birmingham-Southern baseball team is gaining national attention, but people don’t think about the assistant coaches.

Real sacrifices are being made for the Birmingham-Southern baseball team to live out this dream.

Hulse wears a lot of hats for the baseball team. He’s the third-base coach, recruiting coordinator and strength coach. He graduated from Birmingham-Southern in 2011 and was an assistant at Louisiana Tech before joining Weisberg at his alma mater. Birmingham-Southern has made the national tournament six out of seven years that Hulse has been on the staff.

Now he’s coaching in a College Baseball World Series, but doing it for the same salary as a coach in the Little League World Series.

Hulse sent me a text after the victory against Denison.

“Surreal day today!” he said.

Birmingham-Southern baseball is now a national sensation. It’s the team that refuses to die despite its school shutting down. The Panthers feel like a team destiny after winning the super regional. They took the bus to Granville, Ohio, last week and then swept No.2 Denison. A documentary crew is along for the ride at this point. It’s the same guys who produced “Two-A-Days” for MTV.

Maybe Netflix can throw in some cash to help these players and coaches.

National outlets have picked up on Birmingham-Southern, too. The Division III Baseball World Series is about to be overrun with reporters for the first time in the history of the competition. I’ve already booked my plane ticket. My flight leaves Wednesday, too.

All of this attention can’t save the school, but it can at least give Birmingham-Southern grads something to celebrate here at the end of their school’s existence.

Birmingham-Southern traces its roots back to 1858. The small school has always been one of the best liberal arts universities in the Deep South. The story of how the school fell into financial ruin has played out over the last couple years. There was hope the school could be bailed out by the state and city, but that plan fell through when politics got in the way.

Birmingham-Southern is fighting to the end thanks to this baseball team, though, and now even from beyond the grave. It’s a feel-good ghost story blanketing a tragedy and, if nothing else, maybe all this publicity will help the baseball team enjoy a story together that will live forever.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

baseball bus tours 2023

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

baseball bus tours 2023

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

baseball bus tours 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

baseball bus tours 2023

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

baseball bus tours 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

baseball bus tours 2023

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

baseball bus tours 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo nears return; Rangers up next

baseball bus tours 2023

ARLINGTON, Texas — A number of key Diamondbacks players are progressing in their returns from injury — a significant boost as the team continues to search for its 2023 form.

Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo is the closest to a return. Manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Perdomo could begin playing live games in the Arizona Complex League “very, very shortly.” His next step would then likely be a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno before he is able to return to the Diamondbacks.

Perdomo tore the meniscus in his right knee running the bases on April 3. He has been able to take live at-bats and get reps in the field in recent weeks, but has not returned to running the bases. That is the final hurdle he needs to clear before he begins getting action in live games.

“He's showing up in a very positive way the next day,” Lovullo said.

Centerfielder Alek Thomas is beginning to run on a limited-gravity treadmill as he recovers from a hamstring strain. He initially suffered the strain in a game on March 31 and then re-injured it on a rehab assignment in early May.

Like Perdomo, Thomas has been able to take live at-bats for much of his time down. He did significant work on his swing in the off-season and the Diamondbacks are hoping that he will not lose that work as a result of his injury.

Lovullo said Perdomo started his work on the limited-gravity treadmill 10-12 days ago, adding “so that’s about how far behind Alek is.”

On the pitching front, the Diamondbacks are hoping right-hander Merrill Kelly will begin his throwing program next week as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Kelly, who has been out for over a month, underwent imaging last week. The results showed significant healing, according to Lovullo.

Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (lat strain) is also working towards a return. He is throwing from up to 75 feet, along with reliever Miguel Castro. Reliever Luis Frias has begun live bullpen sessions.

Return to Texas brings back World Series memories

ARLINGTON, Texas — Torey Lovullo typically spends the bus ride to opposing ballparks on his phone, returning texts or dealing with the issues of the day. On Tuesday, he took a moment to enjoy the ride.

This was different, he said, because of the memories it brought back from last year’s World Series. He took another moment when he got into his office “and just reflected on what last year meant to me and this organization,” he said.

The Diamondbacks split their two games in Texas in the World Series, losing Game 1 in extra innings but bouncing back in Game 2. They never returned, though, after dropping all three games at Chase Field.

“Very nostalgic, a little bit quiet, sad for me to come through here and sit back down in this office,” Lovullo said. “We wanted to come back here, we wanted to play games here, it just never happened. I also reflected on how proud I was of this team, this organization. So it wasn't a total loss. We lost a world championship and that's painful but you just go through it all and you tell yourself that we had a great year and we have a lot to be proud of.”

Torey Lovullo honors UCLA alum Bill Walton

ARLINGTON, Texas — Lovullo spent four years at UCLA, playing baseball for the Bruins from 1984-87. Those were the same years that UCLA basketball legend Bill Walton was finishing his NBA career.

On Tuesday, Lovullo spoke about his memories of Walton, who died at his home in San Diego on Monday after a battle with colon cancer. Lovullo recalled his first time meeting Walton, when the towering center instructed Lovullo how to pose for a photo in a way that wouldn’t make him appear as short.

“I'll never forget that,” Lovullo said. “Great interactions. People on the west coast know Bill Walton because of his connection to the Pac-12 and I know him because of my connection to him and UCLA. A beautiful human being and just a shocking loss.”

After his playing career, Walton became a beloved announcer. His colorful personality and work calling Pac-12 games made him synonymous with the conference.

“He had a zest for life,” Lovullo said. “He lived it by his own standard. He lived on his own time and his own clock. I appreciate that. It's hard to do in a society that guides you in certain directions. He danced alone and that's what made him so special.”

Tuesday’s Diamondbacks-Rangers pitching matchup

Diamondbacks at Rangers, 5:05 p.m., Cox, Ch. 34

Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (2-3, 4.05) vs. Rangers RHP Dane Dunning (3-3, 4.43).

Pfaadt pitched well against one of the best lineups in baseball last time out, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven Dodgers in six innings. ... Pfaadt is 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA in his last five starts, and opponents are batting .220 against him in that stretch. He is 1-1 with a 3.47 ERA and a .188 opponent batting average, with 22 strikeouts and six walks in his last four road starts. ... This will be Pfaadt's third career start against the Rangers, the second one being in Game 3 of the World Series. Pfaadt allowed three runs on four hits in 5⅓ innings in that outing. ... Dunning has made eight starts this season and came off the injured list just before his most recent start. He had been dealing with a right rotator cuff strain. He lasted just 3⅓ in his last start on May 22 against the Philadelphia Phillies and has not surpassed 5⅓ innings of work in each of his previous six starts.

Wednesday’s Diamondbacks-Rangers pitching matchup

Diamondbacks at Rangers, 11:35 a.m., Cox, Ch. 34

Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (3-3, 6.03) vs. Rangers LHP Andrew Heaney (0-6, 4.69).

His strikeout rate is up from 6.0 per nine last year to 7.3 per nine this year. … Nelson made one appearance against the Rangers in the World Series. He worked 5⅓ one-run innings in Game 3 after the Diamondbacks’ attempt at a bullpen game went awry. They lost the game, 11-7. … Heaney, an 11-year veteran, has had inconsistent results this season. … He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 3⅓ innings against the Phillies last time out. He has not pitched into the fifth inning since May 11 against the Rockies. … Heaney pitched well against the Diamondbacks in Game 3 of the World Series. He allowed one run in five innings and was credited with the win.
