Tour in the bay of Kissamos

We depart from the port of Kissamos, with soft music playing in the background, and sail for about an hour in the homonymous bay, against a stunning backdrop of steep cliffs and rocks, incredible secluded beaches, and the infinite blue.

You will have the chance to see a large cave, which is thought to be an ancient shipyard. At the end of the bay, you will see an impressive geological phenomenon. Over time, Crete’s western side is rising, and its eastern side is sinking. This phenomenon takes place due to the movement of the African tectonic plate under the Eurasian plate. The ancient coastline can be traced over the rocky shores.

At the end of the bay, the boat will sail between the islet of Agria Gramvousa and Cape Vouxa (Trypiti). The landscape is breathtaking, against the backdrop of Valenti, Pontikonisi, Balos lagoon, and Imeri Gramvousa.

The boat will approach afterwards Gramvousa island  or Balos (depending on the itinerary) .

Gramvousa and Balos haven't any roads neither shops. The ship's self-service restaurant-bar is open throughout the cruise, so you can enjoy a delicious meal, salad, snacks, drinks, coffee, ice creams, etc. on board or take away your meal in a package. Also, you can rent a sun umbrella.

Visit Gramvousa-the island of pirates

The boat shall arrive at the small port of Gramvousa, where we shall stay for about 2 hours.

The position of Gramvousa, the Cretan nature, the legends and the passage of time have contributed to the magical aura of the island.

The landscape is spectacular, and the beach of the island is adorned by a lonely shipwreck.

The highest point of the island, atop a steep rock, at an altitude of 137 meters, is dominated by the famous castle of Gramvousa, which was built by the Venetians in 1579. The castle played a significant role in the history of the wider area. The panoramic view, the magnificent nature, and the legend of the pirates’ hidden treasure, allure you to visit it, after a 20 minute hike (it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes).

You may also swim in the area next to the chapel of Agioi Apostoloi. By the way, if you happen to be there on 29th June, St Apostoli’s Day, you will witness a very big feast that takes place by the church. You can stay also on the ship to relax.

After our stop in Gramvousa, the boat will depart for Balos, which will be reached after approximately 20 minutes.

Visit Balos

Balos is listed as one of the best beaches in the world. This exotic beach-lagoon and rare natural monument is situated between the Gramvousa peninsula and Cape Tigani.

Words cannot describe the impressiveness of this place. Nothing can describe what you are about to feel when you see this. When you get to swim in the crystal clear, emerald waters, relax and admire the view of the rare natural beauty of the landscape, the sea, the coast, the rocks and cliffs that rise before you...!

Many years ago, an English yacht anchored there, with Charles of England and Princess Diana as passengers.

You will have the chance to stay in this paradise for about 2,5h.

Due to the incredible natural beauty and preserved ecosystem, both Gramvousa and Balos are included in the European initiative NATURA 2000. The preservation of the island’s natural environment, beyond the moral dimensions, is imposed through a strict national and European institutional protection system.

Thus, the following are prohibited:

• Any kind of pollution. Make sure that you don't leave any garbage behind,  but take them with you on the ship. • The collection of rocks, fossils, shells and ancient finds • The collection of plants and animal catching • Free camping • Starting a fire • Smoking around bushes and woodlands • Swimming is allowed on the beach of Balos, but not in the lagoon.

Before disembarking, please obtain information regarding the exact times of departure of the ship. Υou may return to the ship at any time, but make sure you are back at least 10 minutes before departure.

Have a great time!

In this guide, I will tell you everything you need to know to plan your visit: how to get to Balos Beach by car, by boat or with a guided tour as well as all my best tips for a perfect day.

You will see, with all my best tips and practical information , you will be able to organise your day at Balos Beach very easily!

So, let’s plan your visit to Balos Lagoon!

Balos Beach – One of the most beautiful beaches in Crete

1. boat trip to balos lagoon from kissamos, 2. day trip to balos lagoon from chania, 3. day trip to balos from rethymnon, 4. day trip to balos beach from heraklion, 5. private cruise to balos, 6. rent a boat to go to balos beach, going to balos beach by car, 1. swimming in balos beach, 2. visit balos on foot, 3. water activities in balos, where to eat in balos, what are the things to take when visiting balos lagoon, how long does it take to visit balos beach, falassarna beach, the botanical garden of crete, balos beach hotel, stay in kissamos and take the boat to balos, stay in chania, renting a boat in crete, how to go to balos beach, where is balos lagoon located in crete, when to go to balos, balos or elafonisi lagoon, you’re traveling to crete these articles will help you.

Balos beach is one of the top 3 most beautiful beaches on the island and is often ranked first.

Balos is located in the north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula. If you are planning an itinerary in Crete , you must absolutely include this beach in your scheduled visits.

Once there, you will discover a lagoon divided in two by a sandbar and shallow translucent waters on either side.

In some places, the sand even has a slight pink colour (similar to Elafonissi beach , another very famous beach in Crete), which gives the place even more charm.

How to get to Balos Lagoon – The 6 options

To get to Balos Beach , you will mainly have the choice between going there by car or opting for a boat trip.

If you are in a hurry and just want to book your boat trip to Balos without reading the entire guide, I have selected here the 2 best cruises to go to Balos Lagoon. Just click on the orange links to book:

  • Cruise to Balos Lagoon from Kissamos : a day trip to Balos.
  • Chania to Balos: pick up by bus in front of your hotel in Chania + cruise from Kissamos to Balos.

I will now explain all the ways to reach Balos Lagoon.

Visit Balos Lagoon by boat

There are boat trips to Balos from several Cretan towns.

This is the most classic way to go to Balos Beach and the lagoon : choose a boat trip during the day.

But where do you take boat to Balos?

The boat leaves from Kissamos, a town located north-west of Crete , 38 km from Chania.  You can drive to the hotel and leave your car in the free car park at the port . You can also take the bus from Chania (departure from the bus station).

As part of this superb voyage, you will start along the coast before reaching the first stop of the day*: the Gramvoussa island. You will have about 2 hours to swim on the pretty beach and/or go up to the 16th century Venetian fortress.

The boat then leaves, and after about 20 minutes, reaches Balos where you will have the chance to spend the rest of the day swimming in the crystal clear waters. Deckchairs and parasols can also be rented at Balos beach for just €10 and €2.

You can also walk a little to Cape Tigani . To know the things to do in Balos, just read the rest of the article. 😊

In the late afternoon, the boat will take you back to the port of Kissamos.

*The order may be reversed: first Balos, then the stop at Gramvoussa.

To book your boat trip to Balos Beach by boat from Kissamos , just click on the button below:

  • Be sure to arrive at least 30/40 minutes before the cruise departure time. You should allow time for everyone to board the boat if you want it to leave on time. You can also choose the best seats!
  • The boat has a bar and a small restaurant but you still take your own picnic materials.
  • Sneakers are recommended to go up to the fortress of Gramvoussa.

Lagon de Balos

If you have not rented a car for your stay in Crete , you can also go to Balos through a trip from Chania.

The bus will pick you up directly from your hotel or at a meeting point nearby (you will receive an email with the exact location and time after your booking). It will then take you to Kissamos where you will take the boat to Balos.

The boat trip is exactly the same as the one I just told you about with a:

  • Stop on Gramvoussa island
  • A swimming stop in Balos Lagoon.

At the end of the day, the boat returns to Kissamos where you’ll have to wait for your bus to take you back to Chania. This is really the best way if you don’t want to bother with organisational issues, everything is taken care of from start to finish.

To book your trip from Chania to Balos Lagoon , just click on the button below:

Gramvoussa

Your 3rd option to visit Balos beach is to go on a day trip from Rethymnon .

It’s the same as from Chania, with a bus that will pick you up from your hotel in Rethymnon, takes you to Kissamos to take the boat and go to Balos Lagoon.

Click on the green button below to book your boat trip to Balos:

If you aren’t planning to stay in Chania during your tour in Crete , this organised trip is also available from Heraklion (even if it starts to be a little far away for the bus ride):

  • Departure from Heraklion by bus early in the morning
  • Arrival at Kissamos and boarding the boat
  • Stop at Gramvoussa
  • Swimming at Balos Beach
  • Return by boat and bus to Heraklion in the evening.

Book your trip to Balos Lagoon from Heraklion by clicking on the button below:

For those who want to visit Balos Lagoon without other tourists, I have the perfect boat trip for you: a private cruise!

For 4 hours , you and your family or group of friends (up to 5 people) will get the services of a captain who will take you to Balos and Gramvoussa in a semi-rigid inflatable boat.

Snacks and drinks are included in the fare.

Snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel, flippers) is also provided.

This private boat trip to Balos starts from the port of Kissamos . Guests can choose between departure at 8:30 a.m. and a departure at 3:30 p.m.

In both cases, this let’s you have a much quieter time in Balos because the big boats arrive later in the morning and will already be gone if you choose the afternoon departure.

To book this half-day trip by boat to Balos Beach , just click on the button below:

If you’re looking for a more upscale private cruise, you must choose the private day trip in a sail boat.

The boat can accommodate up to 6 people and leaves Kissamos around 11:00am. After a 90 minute trip where you can gaze upon the coast, you will arrive at Balos Lagoon for a swim break.

You will then leave for Gramvoussa where you can also swim or climb up to the fortress.

The trip also includes an excellent lunch cooked on board and drinks.

If you have your boat licence , you can also rent a boat to go to Balos Lagoon.

It’s also a great idea if you want to visit Balos with family or friends and have a quiet time, deciding your own schedule and where you want to swim.

The easiest way is to rent a boat in Kissamos.

To rent a boat and spend a wonderful day in Balos Lagoon and its surroundsings, you should use Samboat . They simply have the most complete offer for boat rental!

eau turquoise lagon Balos

As I said a bit earlier, you can also get to Balos Lagoon by car.

From Chania , it takes about 90 minutes by car , but you should be aware of some specific points.

Entry to Balos by car is charged: €1 per person. To be paid to the guard in a shack on the right of the road, about 10 km before arriving in Balos.

From the shack, the road turns into a rather rugged track with many stones and large potholes.

That’s why no car rental company in theory allows you to take this track to Balos in a rental car. It will be made clear in your contract that you won’t be covered in case of damage and that if you break down, everything will be at your expense.

If you want to take this risk, you should know that if you drive slowly and leave enough space between the car in front (to avoid getting hit by breaking stones), you won’t need a 4*4 to cover the 8 km of track up to Balos (about a 25 minute drive).

This will become evident when you see the number (and types!) of rental cars that are in the car park! A gentleman will tell you where to park your car.

The car park at Balos is free and has a small snack bar and a paid toilet (€1).

From the car park, you can reach Balos Lagoon on foot via a path that goes down about 1.2 km and descends 150 metres (which you have to climb at the end of the day, which is a little harder 😅).

You must wear sneakers and not flip-flops.

If you are having problems climbing back up, a gentleman will offer you a horseback ride for the return trip.

You must reach Balos Beach by car before 11:00am as after the car park will be full.

Otherwise, you will have to park by the road, which is clearly less practical given its layout and which will greatly increase the walking time to reach the lagoon (the line of parked cars can stretch for miles in summer!).

The best view of Balos Lagoon when going down the path from the car is just before the gentleman who keeps the horses. This is where the most famous photographs of Balos are clicked!

To rent a car to go to Balos and for your whole road trip in Greece , you must compare prices and book directly on Booking.com Cars by clicking here:

The 3 Best Things to Do in Balos Lagoon

Now that you know how to get to Balos by boat or car, here’s what you can do once you get to the lagoon.

Since Balos Lagoon is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, you must of course take the opportunity to swim!

It has everything to allow you to spend a heavenly day: fine sands, crystal clear turquoise waters at the ideal temperature, and the little fish to watch.

Between swims, you can relax on your deckchair under a parasol. In this regard, I would like to say that I was very surprised (favourably) by the price of the deckchairs/parasols at Balos beach: only € 10 for 2 for the day.

It’s a good change from the prices at the French Riviera where the beaches aren’t even as pretty as those in Balos!

You must also alternate swimming with small walks at Balos.

You just have to cross the sandbar to get to Cape Tigani. From there, you must take the path that leads to the small chapel , then for the bravest among you, continue on the same path to reach a sublime panoramic view overlooking the entire Balos Lagoon.

If you have chosen a boat trip and you have therefore arrived directly by sea, you must make the effort to cover part of the trail that goes up to the car park.

This is where you’ll have the best view of Balos Beach and the island of Gramvoussa.

Do you want to make the most of your visit to Balos Beach by trying some water activities ?

Well unfortunately, it won’t be possible , you won’t be able to do any water activities in Balos because the area is a protected natural site.

chemin Balos beach

Tips and practical information for your visit to Balos

As I was saying, Balos is a Natura 2000listed site, so there are certain regulations that must be complied with to protect the flora and fauna . As such, most restaurant-type constructions are forbidden to preserve the place.

On Balos beach, there is only one snack bar offering sandwiches and drinks.

If you have taken the classic boat trip from Kissamos, you can eat directly on the boat.

At Balos car park you will also find a small snack bar.

The best option for eating in Balos is to have a standard picnic . It will be cheaper and certainly be better!

Here’s a the list of useful things to take when visiting Balos Lagoon:

  • Sunscreen – There is simply no shade on the beach. If you don’t want to spend the rest of your holiday in Crete tanned red, you know what to do.
  • Water – Of course, you can buy it on the boat or in the snack bars, but not at the same price as in any Cretan supermarket.
  • Sneakers – Necessary if you are arriving by car or if you want to reach the viewpoints of the lagoon.
  • Cash – To pay the entrance fee of €1 when arriving by road or if you want to go to the toilet (€1).

If you have taken the boat trip, consider 1 day in Balos because for all trips, the boat leaves in the middle of the morning and returns to the port of Kissamos in the late afternoon.

For those coming by car: between the return journey on the track, the descent (and the ascent!) on foot + time to enjoy (even if it is a minimum of one hour), plan a minimum of half a day.

If you can, reach Balos as soon as possible to avoid the crowd that arrives with the boats or in the late afternoon when everyone has left.

What are the things to do around Balos beach?

Here is my selection of the best places to visit near Balos beach.

Close to Balos (40 minutes by car), you must visit Falassarna beach .

It’s an excellent beach with translucent waters and pink sand on the water’s edge. A large part of the beach is private, with many Beach Clubs that offer deckchairs and parasols at reasonable prices.

You will easily find a parking space on the large car park or along the road.

Coming from Balos, on the road that goes down to Falassarna, you also have several taverns with a very nice view.

Falassarna beach Crete

On the road between Balos and Chania , you can make a small detour to visit the Botanical Garden of Crete.

A 2.5 km walk (around a 90-minute visit) will allow you to explore a wide variety of plants and fruit from all over Greece and the whole world. It is a really nice place where you can even admire the many peacocks walking freely in the park.

There is also a restaurant (which I recommend!), a bar and a shop selling local produce.

Entrance fee: € 6 with a small bottle of water offered per person, which is very nice!

Jardin botanique Crète

Chania is the closest major city to Balos Beach.

In Chania, you shouldn’t miss:

  • The Old Venetian Port and its piers lined with restaurants
  • The old town, very picturesque and full of shops
  • The Chania Maritime Museum, located on Fort Firkas
  • The covered market to soak up the local flavours.

For your visit to Chania , you must read my article right here: What are the best things to do in Chania?

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Crete? 😊

FAQ – I’ll answer your questions about Balos Beach

To get to Balos Lagoon, here is a summary of all the options :

  • Boat trip from Kissamos – The classic!
  • Chania to Balos trip (boat included!)
  • Trip from Rethymnon with cruise to Balos
  • Trip from Heraklion + boat to Balos Beach
  • 1/2 day private cruise
  • Private sailboat cruise in Balos – 1 day
  • Boat rental
  • By car via the 8 km track.

Balos Lagoon is located at the far north-west of Crete , at the end of the Gramvoussa peninsula.

To go from Chania to Balos , it takes about 90 minutes by car.

Balos Lagoon is accessible throughout the year by car.

Boat trips are only available from April 30 to October 30.  You won’t be able to visit Balos by boat in winter.

The best time to visit Balos Lagoon is during the months of May, June, September and October . You can swim, enjoy the beach and there are fewer people than in July and August.

For a visit to Balos in summer , you should expect crowds and the weather will be very hot. Going to Balos by boat will be a more pleasant option as it will avoid the hike to reach the car park in the sun. If you are coming by car, you should arrive as soon as possible to get parking space.

Are you choosing between a day at Balos or at Elafonissi ?

It’s not easy to choose between two of the most beautiful beaches in Crete! And I won’t be able to help you much because for me, you absolutely must visit both during your stay in Crete.

I’ll still give you my opinion to help you.

Balos Beach offers a heavenly landscape, less classic than Elafonisi and which you won’t find anywhere else. You can also take a nice boat trip to get there, which is not the case for Elafonisi.

Elafonisi is more easily accessible by car or bus (no track) and is much more developed : large car parks all around, restaurants. With children, for example, it is more practical than Balos.

And its pink sand gives it a lot of charm. In Elafonisi, you can also always find a quieter place to swim. In Balos, everyone is gathered in the same place on the sandbar.

The practical information to get to Elafonissi is in my article: Visit Elafonissi beach.

A travellers guide to Balos Beach, Crete’s incredible beach (updated 2022)

Post updated 04-08-2020 | Crete is well-known for its white-sanded beaches and crystal clear Mediterranean sea, Balos Beach is no different. This guide contains everything to help you visit this paradisiac stretch of beach in the best possible way.

If you’re keen on uncovering Balos Beach, you’ll surely be welcomed by one of the most charming landscapes Crete has to offer.

Think exotic white-sanded beaches, shallow turquoise waters, and an incredibly picturesque backdrop, formed by Tigani and Gramvousa in the distance.

Although situated in the very northwest of Crete, between Kissamos and Gramvousa, Balos Beach feels like a tropical paradise in the midst of the Caribbean sea.

For that reason alone, it is considered one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean, and therefore an absolute must-see on any Crete trip.

If you’re preparing for a day trip to Balos Beach (which I think you should), look no further, this traveller guide includes everything you need to know, from how to get there, what to pack, and the best guided tours & boat trips – plus essential travel information.

A TRAVELLERS GUIDE TO BALOS BEACH, CRETE

Where is balos beach.

Balos Beach is a stunningly picturesque stretch of beach (arguably the best in Crete), situated in the very northwest of Crete, poised between Kissamos and Gramvousa.

Although Balos Beach is pretty remote, 191km of Heraklion, 116km of Rethymno, and 56km of Chania, it is clearly one of the favourite Crete beaches for travellers from all over the world.

HOW TO GET TO BALOS BEACH

Crete makes the perfect island for a banging road trip, and if you’re keen on exploring every corner of the island, renting a car is easily the best thing you could do.

If you’re planning to do so, you’ll have all the freedom to visit Balos Beach as early as possible – plus it’s significantly easier to explore other interesting places on Crete.

For car rental on Crete, I would recommend checking out Rentalcars.com . They offer excellent service, additional insurance, and a broad selection of cars, all at an affordable price.

The journey itself is pretty straightforward, as the roads on the island are in excellent condition. However, do keep in mind that the last 10 kilometres, starting at Kissamos, are off-road and bring you along a steep cliff edge.

If you drive slowly and conscious, it isn’t a big deal, yet it can be a bit challenging during the high season, when significantly more people visit Balos Beach by car.

That said, when planning to drive to Balos Beach with a rental car, check if you’re insurance is covering off-road driving. In most cases, this isn’t a problem, yet it’s better to be safe than sorry.

HOW TO HIKE TO BALOS BEACH

Once you reach the car park, and are ready to go, take a moderate 25-minute hike down, before arriving at the beach.

Along the way, you’ll pass several fascinating viewpoints, hordes of friendly-looking mountain goats, and a stall that offers donkey rides down to the beach.

If you’re following this blog a bit longer, you probably already know that I aim to travel in the most ethical way possible. For that reason, I would sincerely discourage using animals as form as transport.

We ourselves, did the hike at a slow pace, resulting in an excellent experience, with plenty of time to take some photos along the way, and I would highly encourage you to do the same!

Although the hike isn’t the most challenging, it is good to wear decent sneakers and bring extra drinking water (preferably a reusable water bottle ). Additionally, I would recommend bringing something to cover your head from the sizzling Mediterranean sun.

Balos Beach | Day trip in Crete

JOIN A BALOS BEACH TOUR

If a self-driving trip isn’t your cup of tea, that’s alright, there’s a great variety of guided tours available, including full-day trips, organized boat trips, and combinations of both.

Joining a guided tour comes without the hassle of driving off-road and saves you a short hike down – plus you won’t have to drive all the way back after an afternoon of swimming and relaxing.

On top of that, most tours include a visit to the charming island of Gramvousa, which makes the trip the absolute highlight of your time on Crete.

I saved you time by doing some proper research and made a list of the best Balos Beach tours.

The Balos Beach tours I recommend include:

From Heraklion: Full-Day Balos and Gramvousa Tour | A great 12-hour day trip to Balos Beach and Gramvousa.

Balos Beach and Gramvousa Day Tour from Chania | The absolute best option to visit Balos Beach from Chania.

From Rethymno: Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island | The best full-day tour to Balos Beach from Rethymno.

Balos Beach Crete Greece

SETTING FOOT ON BALOS BEACH

Following your journey, it is finally time to set foot on the incredibly appealing sands of Balos Beach, and trust me, arriving at the beach with no other being around is truly a mesmerizing experience.

Think exotic white sand, shallow turquoise waters, and stunningly beautiful scenery, with views of Tigani and Gramvousa in the distance.

Be prepared to be left in awe by the impressive colour palette of the water, and the pure beauty of the unique landscapes that surround you.

Other great beaches on crete.

Being the largest island in Greece, Crete comes with a coastline of approximately 1.046 km, resulting in a great variety of incredibly picturesque beaches, all with impressive clear turquoise water.

Some of my favourite Crete beaches include:

Elafonissi Beach | Named one of the world’s top 25 beaches by Tripadvisor in 2014, Elafonissi Beach is a charming beach that is well known for its pink sand. Located on the southwestern part of the island, Elafonissi was only known by locals not so long ago. At present, it is one of the absolute favourite Crete beaches to travellers and locals alike.

Where | Elafonissi Beach

Falassarna Beach | Situated at only a 20-minute drive of Kissamos, Falassarna Beach is a large stretch of fine-sanded beach, that is among the best beaches in Crete. Famous for its turquoise waters, this beach is perfect for an afternoon of relaxation. On top of that, it’s great if you’re into windsurfing.

Where | Falassarna Beach

Preveli Beach | Charmed by a river that flows directly into the sea, while also dividing the coastline, Preveli Beach is a small, yet incredible beach. The real draw though, it is significantly less busy than the aforementioned beaches, making it an excellent place to enjoy some alone time under the Mediterranean sun. Next to it, you’ll find the Preveli Monastery, which is more than worthy of your visit.

Things to do in Crete

WHERE TO STAY ON CRETE

Porto Veneziano Hotel | Close to the Venetian harbour of Chania but not in the busiest part of town. With a panorama view over the sea and harbour, excellent rooms and quality service this is one of the finest places in Chania.

Ammos suites | An aparthotel that has everything you need. The design of the room looks great and each room has a balcony or sun terrace. They have an outdoor swimming pool and the beach is within 10-meter walking distance. The town centre of Rethymnon is located within 800 meters.

Kalypso Cretan village resort & spa | If you come mainly to relax this place is amazing. Located between the mountains and directly at sea, this hotel provides the most stunning scenes. With facilities like an infinity pool, a private beach where you can dive and a spa this place will help you ease your body and mind. If you stay at Kalypso it would be wise to rent a car if you want to explore the island.

Abaton Island Resort & Spa | This is one of the finest looking resorts on the island. They offer luxurious guesthouses, suites and villas. The design is inspired by the surroundings and all accommodation options offer either an outdoor terrace, private pool or an outdoor hot tub.

Alternatively, use booking.com to find accommodations in Crete .

BEST TIME TO VISIT BALOS BEACH

If you’re after good weather, the summer months from July till early September will be your best bet. Do keep in mind that the prices are considerably higher, and expect way more travellers around.

In my opinion, the best time to visit Crete is during shoulder season, think May, June, September, and early October.

We visited Crete and Balos Beach in May, and had great weather throughout the entire trip – plus we had the advantage that the prices were slightly lower, as well as the fortune to escape the crowds.

BEST TIME OF THE DAY TO VISIT BALOS BEACH

Balos Beach is at its absolute best in the early morning, when the exotic white-sanded beach is not yet flooded with travellers and locals alike.

Alternatively, the afternoon is great for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing, so make sure you bring a good book and some snacks.

Do bear in mind that it will be significantly busier than in the morning, as tourists from guided tours and boat trips will set foot on the coastline of Balos. The good news though, they often stay for a short amount of time, resulting in an almost empty beach afterwards.

SAFETY IN GREECE | TRAVEL INSURANCE

While Greece is totally safe for travellers, I always aim to enter a foreign country with my travel insurance sorted out, and I highly advise anyone else to do the same.

Where we prefer to assume that everything runs smoothly during our travels, the reality is often that something can go wrong at any given moment – when that happens, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Heymondo | Whether you’re going on a 3-week backpacking trip, or planning a long stay somewhere abroad, Heymondo has excellent insurance options either way – plus full covid-19 coverage and a handy app with 24-hour medical assistance. Readers of WTSW receive 5% off any insurance policy, more information here .

World Nomads | If you’re an adventure seeker, backpacker, or planning your once-in-a-lifetime world trip, make sure you check out World Nomads, they designed the perfect travel insurance to help you travel safer and smarter. Do note that they’re not covering covid-19 related claims.

Without a doubt, Balos Beach and lagoon is a freakin’ dream!

This past year, when Dan (the wanderful husband) and I went on our honeymoon to Greece, we spent one week on the beautiful island of Crete and had the amazing opportunity to visit Balos Beach, experiencing it in all its glory.

Featuring sparkling turquoise-blue waters, unbelievable views of the surrounding coastline, luscious sandy shores, shallow waters perfect for relaxing in, and countless beach chairs that make sun-bathing easy.

This makes it one of Crete’s most popular beaches. Even more impressive, Balos Beach is often listed as one of the best beaches in the world.

However, along with the exceptionally good comes a few not so great things that you should know before you visit.

YOUR GUIDE TO VISITING BALOS BEACH ON THE ISLAND OF CRETE

Where is balos beach located.

First things first: where the heck is Balos Beach located on the island of Crete?

With Crete being a rather large island (it takes like four to five hours to get across the entirety of it!), you might not even know where this gorgeous beach is.

Balos Beach is located on the upper lefthand corner of Crete, near the area of Kissamos. There are two peninsulas that jut north from the rest of the island. Balos Beach is perched at the very tippy top of the far left peninsula. I’ve included a handy Google map below that points to its exact location.

It’s also worth noting that Balos Beach is located near Imera Gramvousa, also known as Gramvousa Island. If you take the ferry to Balos Beach, you’ll find that it generally stops here on the way! There’s a nice little beach, as well as an old Venetian fortress (called Gramvoussa Fortress) that you can hike to.

balos beach tour

How to Get to Balos Beach by Car

Personally, we rented a car through Kayak when visiting Crete and drove to Balos Beach from Chania. This ended up being around a 1 hour and 20 minute drive. We stopped in Kissamos along the way for lunch, as you’ll find out below that Balos Beach has nearly zero facilities.

No matter where you’re staying, you’re going to have to take the notoriously bump Balos Beach road. This is about a 3.5 mile (5.5 km) stretch of sandy, rocky road. Beware, this road is minimally maintained, has no barrier (and a scary ledge) and can be insanely packed during peak tourist season.

Also, on some stretches, it will feel as though the bottom of your car is being jostled off and that all of its parts are falling out.

My personal tip is to take it easy and go slow. You’ll get there eventually!

Note that you have to pay a sort of Balos Beach “toll” to get to the peninsula. This cost €1 per person and is paid at a small booth located at the beginning of the Balos Beach road.

Top Tip: Doublecheck Your Car Rental Agreement

If you are considering visiting Balos Beach and lagoon by rental car, I would highly recommend checking with your rental provider on whether or not this is allowed.

Many rental car companies in Chania or near Chania Airport do not allow renters to take their car rental to Balos Beach, as the road there is seriously bumpy, not to mention on the edge of a cliff.

We didn’t realize this until after arriving back to our hotel and re-reading the car rental agreement… oops. If we were caught (thankfully we weren’t!), this could have resulted in a €300 fine.

Additionally, your car will likely not be insured if you go on the road to Balos Beach, which is worth noting.

To get around this, you can rent a car that’s specifically for off-roading, such as a Jeep. Otherwise, you can do what we (unknowingly) did and just risk it! But this is up to you.

balos beach tour

How to Get to Balos Beach by Boat or Ferry

If you don’t have a car and want to visit Balos Beach, you have a few options.

✓ Take the ferry from Kissamos Port to Balos Beach (€30 roundtrip for passengers who are 13+)

✓ Go on an off-roading tour to Balos Beach ( like this one )

✓ Rent a charter boat to take you there on a private tour (ranges from €500-1,000 per group, depending on where you’re departing from)

✓ Join a boat group tour from your area (e.g. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion)

If you are part of a larger group, I would definitely explore the option of renting a charter boat or going on a private tour. This not only makes visiting Balos Beach much easier but it can work out pretty cheap if split amongst several people.

You can also customize where you want to stop! For instance, if you see a beautiful, secluded beach off in the distance, you can ask your boat driver to take you there. How fun!

Here are a couple private tours to check out: private tour to Balos Beach from Chania or private RIB cruise to Balos Beach from Kissamos .

If you’re staying in Chania, such as the Old Town, you could also just walk around the port and find countless boating businesses offering day trips to Balos Beach!

balos beach tour

The Unavoidable Hike to Balos Beach

If you drive to Balos Beach, you unfortunately have to then hike down to the actual beach. (Which sucks after that horrendous car ride, but hey, it’s all part of the adventure, right?)

The hike is around 1.7 miles (2.7 km) out and back, so a little less than one mile to the beach from the car park. You will probably even see some cute goats on your way there!

For this, I recommend wearing some good shoes… more on what you should wear to Balos Beach below!

balos beach tour

When You Should Visit Balos Beach

During peak tourist season, Balos Beach can get super busy ! Especially if you’re there when the ferries and all of their passengers are there. This means the beach will be packed with countless visitors.

(During the months of July and August, the ferry usually sells out — it has a capacity of around 1200 people!)

That said, you can work your schedule around the arrival and departure of the ferries, as this is how most Balos Beach visitors reach the area.

Personally, I would visit either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Dan and I arrived at Balos Beach around 3 PM and it was perfect!

The ferry workers started rounding passengers up at around 4 to get them back on the boat and then it departed at 5 PM. This left the beach basically empty, aside from some that got to Balos Beach via car.

However, I would have actually really liked to experience the beach in the morning! I’m sure it was blissful with the morning sun, calm waters and desolate shores.

If you’re thinking of going in the morning, plan to arrive between 9 AM and 11 AM. The ferry from Kissamos gets there around 1 PM or 2 PM. When you arrive early, you can still have a pretty full day at Balos Beach–without the crowds!

balos beach tour

What You Should Bring With You to Balos Beach

Because Balos Beach is quite remote, there are very minimal facilities and amenities there. This means no cafe, shop or proper toilets.

There are a couple W.C.s at the beach but their not anything to brag about… but in case you have to go, they are there! I think they may cost €1 to use but I’m not sure, as I didn’t use them.

During part of the year, you’ll also find a one or two small canteens selling bottles of water and some snack options at the beach. Additionally, there’s a small shop in the parking lot that sells food and drink options.

That’s about it, though! Not to mention, since there’s like one guy selling stuff, the prices are astronomically high… as they can easily get unprepared tourists to pay these ridiculous prices.

This is why I recommend bringing everything you need with you, including:

  • Lots (and lots) of drinkable water
  • Ample amounts of snacks
  • Snorkeling gear
  • Beach umbrella (if you’re prone to sunburns)
  • Lounge chairs (if you can carry them)

balos beach tour

What Should You Wear to Balos Beach?

If you’re taking the ferry to Balos Beach or a private boat tour, you can easily slip on a swimsuit, a sundress or shorts, some flip-flops and be just fine for the beach adventure.

However, if you’re like me and you plan to drive to Balos Beach, I would highly recommend wearing some proper shoes and comfortable clothing. While the hike is short, in the height of summer when the sun is beaming down, it can be exhausting .

Make yourself as comfortable as possible by wearing the right shoes and clothing. Personally, I wore my beloved Teva sandals and they were great for navigating the pebbly hiking trail, as well as the decline and incline to and from the beach.

Additionally, wear LOTS of sunscreen! The Greece sun is hot and spicy, and she can burn you quite easily if you have sensitive skin and are prone to sunburns.

Since Balos Beach is part of the sea, I would highly recommend getting a sea- and ocean-friendly sunscreen. You can find my personal sunscreen recommendations in this blog .

Other FAQs About Visiting Balos Beach

Where is the “pink” balos beach on crete.

While Balos Beach does have a few pinkish spots, you’re likely thinking of Elafonissi Beach, which is on the southwestern side of Crete.

Elafonissi Beach is known for its pink sands, sandy shores and crystal-clear blue waters. It’s definitely worth a visit but can be quite the drive to get to!

Is Balos Beach Worth It?

Ah, the golden question! Personally, I think Balos Beach is a little over-hyped BUT I really loved it. It’s truly stunning and like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

If you drive to Balos Beach and hike to the beach, your eyes are basically assaulted with the most beautiful views ever. Not to mention, on a good day, the waters are calm and clear, giving you the perfect opportunity to soak in the shallows and relax in the sun.

So, in my opinion, 100% worth it.

Does Balos Beach Have Umbrella?

Yes! Balos Beach has sunbeds and umbrellas that protect you from the strong Greece UV rays. You can typically rent one from about €15-30 per bed, depending on the time of year and how busy the beach is.

Note that if it’s windy–and Balos Beach can get very windy–the umbrellas might not be possible to put up.

Should I Visit Balos Beach From Chania?

When determining where to stay on Crete, I would definitely recommend Chania. Chania Old Town is absolutely gorgeous and it’s a super easy drive from Chania to Balos Beach.

Plus, there are an array of other things to do around Chania that you shouldn’t miss, like a vineyard and olive oil tour (I loved this one !), getting lost among the tiny streets of Chania’s Old Town, eating at all the delicious tavernas and exploring the gorgeous mountain range south of Chania.

What are Other Popular Beaches Near Balos Beach?

In addition to Balos Beach, you’ll find Falasarna Beach , the beaches around Kissamos , and the beaches along the west side of Crete are also popular among tourists and locals.

balos beach tour

All in all, Balos Beach (and the entirety of Crete) is worth visiting. I loved every second of exploring this gorgeous Greek island and look forward to visiting again in the future!
