How to apply for a Work and Holiday visa

If you’ve dreamed of spending a year in Australia, here’s how to score yourself a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462).

Work and Holiday visa application FAQs

On this page, we’ll give you all the details you need to apply for Work and Holiday visa (WHV) subclass 462, which is available to visitors who are aged 18 to 30 (inclusive) and hold a valid passport for any of the following countries: Argentina; Austria; Chile; The People's Republic of China; Czech Republic; Hungary; Indonesia; Israel; Luxembourg; Malaysia; Peru; Poland; Portugal; San Marino; Singapore; Slovak Republic; Slovenia; Spain; Switzerland; Thailand; Turkey; USA; Uruguay; and Vietnam.

You may also be required to demonstrate a level of "functional English". For the full list of eligibility requirements, visit the Department of Home Affairs website .

If you hold a passport from Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (including British National Overseas passport holders), Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan (other than an official or diplomatic passport) or the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, you’ll need to apply for a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417). All the details for that  can be found here .

When applying for your Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), you need to be aged between 18 and 30. If you apply for the visa when you’re still 30, but turn 31 before the application has been approved, the visa may still be granted. 

To apply for WHV 462, you need to go online, create an  ImmiAccount  and fill out the details.

You may be asked for a number of documents during your application process, such as:

  • the pages of your passport showing your name, personal details and passport issue and expiry dates
  • a copy of your birth certificate showing both your parents’ names
  • evidence of funds (usually AUD $5,000)

Depending on your country of citizenship, you may also be required to provide:

  • character documents
  • proof of English language proficiency

Document requirements can change, so check the  Department of Home Affairs' website  for the most up to date document requirements.

The online application form for a WHV 462 is not difficult to fill out, but it may take a couple of hours to complete it and add all the documentation required.

You’ll first need to create an  ImmiAccount  and confirm your email address. Once you’ve started your application, you can save it and go back to it later to finish filling it in.

Before you begin your application, check to make sure that applications are still open for your country of passport. The Department of Home Affairs website gives up to date information on the  status of country caps .

All documents you attach to your application must be in English. Those that aren’t have to be supplied with a translation.

You’ll need clear, colour scans or photographs of each of these documents. If a document has more than one page, it should be saved as a single file.

Your only other obligation is to sign the Australian Values Statement. This is a document that confirms you agree to respect the Australian way of life, and obey Australian laws while you’re in the country.

Most applications are processed within 79 days, but it can take longer in some cases, especially if you don’t fill out the form correctly or forget to attach the right documents.

Visa processing times may vary. For the most up to date information, visit the Department of Home Affairs website.

When you apply for your Working and Holiday Visa, you’ll have to pay AUD $635. You may also have to pay for extras like health checks, police certificates or biometrics (facial photograph and finger prints). Be sure to check the Department of Home Affairs for the latest information.

If you’re applying for a WHV from a country with a high risk of tuberculosis, you may need to undergo a medical examination and chest X-ray.

You should also note that you are responsible for any health debts you run up while you’re visiting Australia. You should ensure you take out sufficient travel or health insurance to cover illness and accidents during your stay.

You should have savings equivalent of AUD $5,000 – be prepared to show proof of the funds in your bank account . On top of your savings, you need a return air ticket or enough funds to pay for a flight home.

The WHV allows you to stay in Australia for 12 months from the day you enter the country. During that time you can leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you like, but once the visa is activated it can’t be extended. All that really means is that if you spend a month somewhere else that time won’t be added to the length of time for which your visa is valid.

The idea of the WHV is to allow you to take on short-term and casual jobs to fund your travels and help you pay for your holiday. For the most part, you can stay in one job for a maximum of six months, although this can be extended with special permission in some cases .

If you fall in love with life in Australia (and who could blame you?) it is possible to extend your time here. If you do at least three months of  specified work  in eligible northern and regional areas of the country you can apply for a Second Work and Holiday visa that will give you another year to explore and top up your funds. Work Abroad Australia is a tremendous gap year option ! Our program is designed to have a structural component that assists our travelers with pre-departure and arrival logistics such as bank account setup, obtaining the equivalent of their Social Security number, finding accommodation, securing a job, and making friends! This work abroad program also allows for enough flexibility for travelers to experience self-discovery by choosing where they live, what jobs they secure, and when and where they would like to travel.

This is a great gap year program for you if you:

  • Are seeking guidance to help you navigate getting settled abroad, but desire the flexibility to work and travel on your own schedule.

The cost of living in Australia, especially in big cities like Sydney, is likely more than what you’re used to in your home country. So, it is important to budget accordingly to make sure you are financially prepared upon arrival and until you begin to make a regular paycheck.

Here is a rough estimate of your initial start-up costs (in USD):

* this total amount is a requirement of the Working Holiday Visa, however, it is a good amount to have to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably until you start working.

Average Weekly Budget:

Your salary will depend on how often you decide to work and what work you end up getting into. However, you are guaranteed to make Australian minimum wage ($19.49 AUD/hour), and as long as you’re working 28-38 hours per week, you’ll be making enough to live and travel on.

Wages and rent are paid weekly which makes budgeting your paychecks much easier:

These weekly costs will, of course, depend on your personal spending habits, where you live, how many hours you work, and if your job provides a higher pay/accommodation, but you should expect to be able to save some of your paycheck every week.

Although you will most likely spend any extra cash on travel opportunities in between jobs, you have the potential to make back your start up costs:

During your first week in Sydney, you’ll have 7 days of activities and excursions where you’ll get to know fellow travelers and enjoy your introduction to this gorgeous country!

Monday: Check in, chill out and relax in preparation for a big week ahead! You will meet your group leader and the rest of your group, plus familiarize yourself with the team. You will also get a brief overview on what’s going to happen for the week ahead. Later you will visit a party bar for your Welcome Dinner!

Tuesday: After a good night’s sleep, join the comprehensive info / welcome orientation session where you’ll learn everything you need to know about working and travelling around Australia. Our team in Australia are all experienced travelers and have started where you are now. After the welcome orientation session, you’ll head to the city tour which kicks off at 11am.

You will see the Sydney Harbour Bridge & the Opera House and take a trip down to the Botanical Gardens. At the same time, you’ll be getting to know your new mates in Australia and taking some awesome photos to make your mates back home jealous!

Later, you will experience a different side of Sydney! During the evening the group will go for a relaxed walk through the historical suburbs of Sydney. On this walk, you’ll see some of the Indigenous and early European history of Sydney, one of the most multicultural parts of Australia.

Wednesday: You’ll start off the day attending a job search seminar to learn lots of tips and tricks about job search in Australia, then you’ll go for a cruise on Sydney Harbour. Spend the rest of the day cruising, swimming, and chilling on Sydney Harbour! You’ll also get to enjoy your first Aussie BBQ on deck!

Thursday: You can’t come to Sydney and not visit the Blue Mountains! This morning, you’ll escape the city and travel to the Blue Mountains National Park, a short drive from Sydney. Enjoy hiking, visit waterfalls, spot wild kangaroos, and take in some of the Bluey’s spectacular views!

Friday: Happy Friday! You will visit Sydney’s famous cliff-top coastline and walk from Coogee to Bondi beach. You’ll explore six beaches along the way! It’s the perfect way to take multiple swims or work on your tan before taking in the sights of Bondi!

Saturday: Immerse yourself in the true-blue Aussie tradition that is ‘catching a wave’ at our half day group surf lessons. Our qualified and local surf guide will teach you the ins and outs of surfing with ocean safety, surfing techniques, warm-up, and time in the water. You’ll be gliding along a wave in no time. After a day at the beach, you’ll get dressed up for a fun night on the town! Meet the group at one of our favorite party bars before starting our Sydney Pub Crawl.

Sunday: Your first week down under comes to an end. The itinerary is over, but your adventure continues – on Sunday our team will assist you with any remaining questions you’ve got and also onward travel planning.

During your first week in Sydney, you’ll attend a brief orientation to prepare you for your job and housing search. Before you arrive, your bank account will already be opened – you won’t have to research Australian banks or finalize your account. Instead, the team will have prepared all of your paperwork in advance. They will also set you up for the Australian tax system and give you your Tax ID so you file taxes before you leave.

During orientation you will meet the team and get all the information necessary to start planning your time in Australia. You will learn about life in Australia, when to work, where to work, where to travel and when to travel.

At orientation, you will:

  • Learn about Australian culture!
  • Review the yearly job market; what jobs are abundant and where.
  • Be introduced to online job boards for future jobs.
  • Sign up for any required courses you may need to be eligible for work, like the RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) if you plan to work in environments where you serve alcohol (resorts, bars, cruise ships)*
  • Receive assistance in finding short or long term accommodation.
  • Receive tax ID and learn how to file taxes when you leave the country.

*These courses may or not be available, as not all services are fully up and running

Job Consultation

You will have the opportunity to meet with a job consultant and talk about your resume, what other skills you may have that aren’t listed on your resume, and to set your expectations for the type of work that you would be best suited for.

After the job consultant gets to know you a little better, you will be put on an Availability List along with all the other travelers. This list shows who is available to work, what their skills and preferences are as well as who is traveling and unavailable for work. This list is constantly changing as 50-60 employers call every day looking for employees to start working ASAP.

Our in-country staff will call you to let you know when you have been matched with a job, which you can take or turn down. Travelers who are open minded to the work they do may start working the day after they are placed on the Availability list, where others may hold out for their preferred position or decide to travel first. If you’re looking to work, you should expect to have a job within 2-3 weeks.

You may use this method to find work later in the year, though most travelers prefer to use the online job board to find subsequent work, especially if they have relocated outside of Sydney.

Most of your job opportunities will be in the Sydney area and in the southern region of Australia around Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. Resort and agriculture jobs are offered in the Northern Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. What are the most common job types?

Hospitality, customer service, and office work are by far the most common job type as Australian companies report that the high level of service in the US and Canada tends to produce workers who are well-suited for these types of positions.

Seasonal work in amusement parks, resorts, and on offshore cruises, etc. are great positions for more consistent and long-term jobs (3-6 months) where jobs in restaurants, bars, hostels, and hotels are widely available for shorter contracts.

Working on farms and WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) are also popular among Working Holiday travelers who want to experience a different type of work outside of a city.

Can I change jobs while I am there?

Yes. Many jobs are seasonal, so it is likely you will hold more than one job in your host country. Also, visa requirements dictate that you will not be allowed to work for a given employer for a period longer than six months. Due to these factors, most Work and Travel travelers hold 2-3 jobs over the duration of their stay, which is a great way to travel to different parts of the country and experience as much authentic Aussie culture as you can!

You will have access to an online job board which will enable you to check employment postings wherever you are. You should also call or visit the Center in Sydney regularly to keep informed of new work opportunities.

What will my first week look like?

Your first week is a time of exploration, preparation, and fun!

All programs begin on Thursdays. The program start date that you select from our website will be your arrival date. Our travelers use this time to settle into their accommodation, review their itinerary for the week, explore a bit, and recharge for the rest of the welcome week ahead!

The next 6 days will be dedicated to reviewing job resources, becoming familiar with local transportation, learning about housing, solidifying tax documents, meeting new friends, and getting to know Australia!

Where will I live during welcome week?

We have all of our travelers meet up at a hostel in the center of Sydney so everyone can get acquainted! For the first week you will live in shared hostel accommodation.

Where will I live when I am hired?

Shared flats, hostels, Airbnbs, and homestays are all potential accommodation options based on the lifestyle you would like to lead (i.e. backpacker or sedentary).

Some jobs, especially those on resorts and farms, include housing or subsidized housing. Our in-country partner does take housing requests within the Sydney and Melbourne area. Regardless of where you plan to live, they are happy to provide guidance and resources to help you find accommodation.

As a note, Sydney generally has the highest cost-of-living. In Sydney, you will likely pay $160-$200 for a shared room per week. If you want your own room, it is more expensive. If you are staying a while, think about renting an apartment with some friends or moving in with some Aussies, as it is generally the cheapest option. However, some jobs will only be short term (1-2 months) and it can be difficult to find a short or open lease, so you may need to spend more towards $200 AUD/week to stay at a hostel. Melbourne and other major cities have a lower cost of living than in Sydney, but most jobs are available in and around Sydney.

Do I have to stay for the full 12 months?

No, you don’t have to stay for the full 12 months.

We recommend that our travelers plan a trip that is 3 months or longer, but it isn’t mandatory. In our experience, we find that it takes our travelers a month or so to get acclimated in their new surroundings. The first few weeks are used to secure jobs, accommodation, and tax information. Having a handful of months in Australia will allow you to fully settle in, work, and travel comfortably.

How long does it take the get a job?

This varies. During the busy season when lots of jobs are available, sometimes several job prospects are already awaiting you when you arrive and you can start work right away. Other times it can take up to 6 weeks. Usually if there is a delay it is because you have rejected initial job prospects because they did not meet your expectations for some reason.

Can I get a career-oriented job?

The visa you’ll get only allows you to work at any one job for 6 months or less. Since employers looking to fill high-skill positions generally want someone for longer than that, it’s unlikely (although not impossible) that you’d get a more professional or high-skilled position. This program caters to people looking for a more casual work experience, and who are more focused on travel.

Can I work for longer than one year?

United States citizens are eligible for a second Working Holiday visa if they spend 3 months working in Northern Australia in one of the following industries:

  • plant and animal cultivation
  • fishing and pearling
  • tree farming and felling
  • tourism and hospitality

This means you could work for three months in one place, then have 21 more months to work and travel as you please in Australia! Our in-country staff will help you secure this type of work if you’re interested in taking advantage of this policy.

Will I need a car?

No, public transportation is widely available in Australia, especially within the cities and urban areas.

Will I meet other travelers?

Yes, we’ve designed this as a group program! Each start date allows for up to 25 travelers.

Our welcome week includes an orientation in addition to numerous group activities that allow you to meet a bunch of individuals who are also looking to work and travel throughout the country. Since you’re all on the same program, you’ll already have a lot in common!

We look for applicants that are open-minded, flexible, adventurous, hardworking, and communicative!

Open-mindedness and flexibility are qualities that we seek because it is not uncommon that travelers work 2-3 jobs during their stay abroad. Not everyone will start off with their dream job, BUT everyone gains valuable experience—the more open-minded you are, the sooner you will find work!

Adventurous individuals are great for this program because Australia provides ample opportunity for travelers to be engaged in nature and participate in exciting activities.

We seek hardworking and communicative individuals because each traveler must be willing to do their share of work in order to solidify housing and employment. Our team works hard to assist and support our travelers, but travelers must be willing to attend job interviews and communicate with our team abroad.

1.   Start Your Application  Here .  You will be sent more information as well as the link to our application portal to begin your formal application.

2. Submit Basic Program Information:  The first step in our application portal will be basic things like your chosen start date, etc.

3. Submit your Application Fee : A $300 fee is required in order to apply for the program. This is subtracted from your total program fee. If we are unable to accept you following your interview (very unlikely!) we will refund your application fee in full.

4.   Complete Application & Documents :  Provide more detailed information about yourself in Part 2 of the application. In this section, you’ll tell us more information like your work history, motivations for joining the program, travel history, and emergency contacts. You will also submit your documents (below) within your portal account.

5.   Zoom Interview: Once you have submitted your online application and paid your application fee, you will be asked to schedule a video interview with a Greenheart Travel representative.

6. You’re Accepted!  Woohoo! We are usually able to accept people within 1-2 weeks of their interviews.

7. Commitment Payment: Once you are accepted to the program, you will need to submit a $300 commitment payment within 14 days to confirm your spot on the program. Once you submit your commitment payment you will unlock the acceptance portion of your portal, which includes things like pre-departure videos, travel and arrival information, the Greenheart Travel Atlas, and more.

9. Book your flights, and get ready for your adventure to Australia! The rest of your balance is due 60 days before you leave.

The above process can take as little as 1 week to complete, so it’s up to you how quickly you’re able to complete each step.

If you think you missed out on the "gap year" or working holiday experience because of the global lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, we have some good news.

Since  Australia   reopened its borders  in 2022 it has been experiencing labor shortages in a host of industries. In response, the government has just increased the eligibility for some working holiday makers from 30 to 35 years to attract more workers Down Under.

And there's more: the range of jobs available to working holiday makers in Australia means taking a year out to work and travel doesn't have to derail your career (something the gap year naysayers might tell you).

What are the new rules for working holiday makers in Australia?

As of 1 July 2023, citizens of the UK, Canada, France, Denmark, Italy and Ireland are eligible to apply for an Australian Working Holiday visa up to the age of 35. For the other 40 countries participating in the program , the 30 year age restriction remains for now.

Industry groups are calling on the Australian government to go further and lift the age of working holiday visas to 50 years to help plug skills gaps, especially in management level roles, but nothing has been decided yet.

Some of the requirements for extending the visa beyond an initial 12 months (such as undertaking farm work) will also be dropped for British passport holders from 1 July 2024 as part of the Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement.

Commenting on the changes, Sally Cope, Tourism Australia’s Regional General Manager for UK & Northern Europe said, “Every year, more than 35,000 young Brits head to Australia to work and play, the Aussie way.

"Our research reveals close to half of 25- to 34-year-olds are considering working abroad to advance their careers, so this five-year age range increase presents a world of openings to these young professionals.

"Australia also offers an incredible lifestyle – where else can you be in the boardroom at 4pm and by the beach an hour later? We’re sure there are many 30–35-year-olds who thought they had missed their chance to live and work Down Under, who will jump at this exciting prospect; and Australia is ready to welcome them.”

So, is there a downside? Well, while eligibility has increased – so has cost of the Working Holiday Maker visa, rising from AU$510 to AU$640 from 1 July. Perhaps it's a government incentive to stick around for longer and make the most of the opportunities in Australia.

How long does it take to get a working holiday visa?

Provided you have an up-to-date passport, satisfy the age requirement (which varies by citizenship ), have some savings, and meet the health and character requirements for a Working Holiday visa , you can apply immediately. 

As long as you have all the necessary documentation ready, visa approvals can be turned around in less than a day. 

How long can I work in Australia?

To extend your initial 12-month Australian Working Holiday visa for a second year (and even a third year), most travelers need to do at least 12 weeks (3 months) in a "specified industry" and/or region. These are places where workers are most needed in Australia: farming, fisheries, construction or remote-area tourism gigs. 

However this requirement is changing in 2024 for British travelers thanks for a reciprocal agreement between the two nations. 

The former rule that you can only work for one employer for a maximum of six months is being reinstated, after a temporary amnesty. This was a condition industry wants removed, particularly in more remote locations where it's harder to attract good staff. Workers take time to learn the ropes, and to build strong relationships. 

To further entice willing workers, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s tourism group is encouraging employers to stump up the visa fees (AU$640) to get people over to fill their job vacancies.

If you're applying for a job from home while applying for your visa, there's no harm in asking your future employer to help you out with the fee.

What jobs are there in Australia for working holiday makers?

Matthew Heyes of Backpacker Job Board , Australia’s largest recruitment website for working holiday makers, says, “Job opportunities for working holiday makers are widespread, covering a range of different sectors. There are fruit-picking…and other agricultural-based [jobs], which are really popular because these roles contribute to the second- and third-year visa-extension program. The roles are also seasonal and offer the opportunity to earn well while the seasons are high. 

“Other cornerstones of backpacker employment include au pair work, plus sales and marketing positions as well as other broader hospitality jobs.”

A strong Australian dollar is another key incentive for workers who might be seeing their local currency tanking. Work hard enough and save well, and you could go home with some major dollars in the bank – that is, if you don’t spend it all having the time of your life traveling around Australia.

I'm over 40, can I work in Australia for a year?

The proposal to extend the maximum age for the Working Holiday visa to 50 has certainly piqued a lot of interest. The mid-career sabbatical – sometimes called an “adult gap year” – was already gaining traction before the pandemic.

The global shutdown also saw a lot of people reviewing what is important in life. Taking a year out from an established career to work, travel and meet new people is just the kind of radical change many now crave in place of being tied to a screen all day.

Matthew Heyes sees the potential for extending the age for working holiday . “It will completely change what it is to be a backpacker,” he says. “No longer will it be confined to the youth travel market. We could see a more diverse profile of traveler in Australia’s adventure travel sector. I believe this could be a huge win for Australia.

“If it goes ahead, it will also introduce a workforce to Australia who have a broad wealth of skills and qualifications. Their career experience would benefit the Australian economy.” 

Doing something really different – whether working outside or in a public-facing role – somewhere as friendly, safe and beautiful as Australia could be the adventure of a lifetime. No matter your age.

Do you dream of work and travel in Australia? Right on! Here are a few things to know before you go deeper into planning your journey abroad.

Sunshine, sandals, and... paychecks. Working in Australia is a popular right of passage for many young expats keen for adventure and sustained world traveling. With dozens of job possibilities, thousands of opportunities, and a little thing called the Australian Work Visa program , it’s no wonder that intrepid globetrotters head south to Oz every year in droves. 

But is it all tan lines and cute animals? What should you be prepared for as you plan your own work abroad stint in Australia? We’re glad you’re asked. Traveling and working in Australia is about as close to a walk in the (very sun-soaked) park as you can get. Read on as we share our must-know tips for those considering work and travel in Australia .

Pro tips for working in Australia

1. there are a lot of different jobs to consider..

Australia’s working holiday visa programs has made it an attractive destination for practical long-term travelers for years. We’re not really sure which came first. The fun, temporary jobs abroad in a variety of sectors? OR the hoards of international travelers looking for fairly low level, low commitment jobs? It’s a real chicken or egg situation (or are we say cassowary or egg situation).

The most popular short term jobs abroad in Australia are in the hospitality (hostel employment, bartending, barista gigs) and agriculture (physical labor like harvesting crops) sectors. You can also find plentiful work as an au pair abroad and in entry-level marketing and communications positions. If you have your sights set on mid-level or advanced positions, there’s absolutely opportunities for you—it’ll just require a more polished resume and more power heels and dress shoes in your backpack than thongs (flip flops!!!). Not to worry though, because companies like Alliance Abroad or InterExchange are here to assist you through every step of the process!

2. Australia is really, really big—and diverse.

You might look at that country populating the southeast corner of your map and think, “Sure, Australia is big, but I can conquer it all pretty easily.” Think again. A flight from Perth to Brisbane—on opposing coastlines—will take you 4.5 hours. The vast Red Center takes hours (if not days) to cross by train. The tropical rainforests of the northeast give way to one of the biggest deserts on the planet. You can find shrubs and low lying grasses across the southern coastline.

Plenty of options in Oz for a more urban experience—or you can plan to go further afield & work abroad in the Red Center!

Mountains more your style? Stick to traveling and working in Australia in Sydney and the east coast. Love feeling “away from it all” (except maybe quokkas?)? There’s an entire state for you: Western Australia. Laid back, artsy, and uber cultural destinations like Melbourne are a nice respite from the dusty, sun soaked, indigenous vibes of Alice Springs and provide yet another unique Aussie experience for the engaged traveler. Moral of the story: Australia is chock full of unique locations to explore, all overflowing with a variety of cultures and customs to experience.

And if you love to spend your time off the clock by the water, you’d be hard pressed to find a destination with more mileage of beautiful coastline. Talk about a good tan!

3. You need to secure your work visa—but not your employment—in advance.

It’d be really awesome if you could just land in Oz after your direct LAX —> SYD flight and get hired ASAP, but alas, the world doesn’t work this way. You need to research and coordinate your application for a working holiday visa in advance of arriving to Australia.

On the bright side, so long as you fulfill the minimum requirements and can fork out the fees, you are close to guaranteed access to this work abroad opportunity. Further, you don’t need to secure your employment in advance, which gives you a lot of flexibility to find opportunities as they arise. However, companies exist to assist you in securing working opportunities before transitioning to Australia, making your Australian journey that much more smooth from the start! 

And one more bright side: Your visa isn’t attached to employment for a single organization, company, etc. You can move about at-will!

4. The fashion culture is unique—it's not all khaki!

Khaki is out! You might be browsing the internet in search of shades of tans and greens to stuff in your suitcase—“To look like the locals, of course!” And while we applaud your interest and efforts to be culturally sensitive, the khaki has got to go. While some might think Australia is simply removed from many common conventions, that simply is not the case. In fact, the land down under is very keen on staying with the trends. You can dress in western fashion for most employment in Australia but will want to bring additional tools or equipment if you’re planning for specific jobs (i.e. leather work gloves for hard labor).

Outside of work, showing off skin is fine, as are yoga pants. There’s a very laid back approach to modesty and fashion, which allows you to let your own style dictate your wardrobe.

While we’re on the subject of stereotypes that aren’t quite true: Aussies don’t actually put shrimp on the barbie. They put prawns on ‘em.

5. You’ll earn money in the Aussie dollar.

While traveling and working in Australia, you’ll be earning the local currency—Aussie dollars (or notes)! The Australian dollar is a strong, stable currency. Some jobs may pay you direct in cash, whereas others will set up direct deposits or even distribute checks for every pay period. It would be wise for you to create a system in advance for where you plan to store your income (in a local bank). If you do opt for the local bank, be sure to transfer bulk amounts of cash periodically back to your home bank account. If you do this systematically, you can avoid hefty transfer fees over time! 

6. Eating out will cost you a pretty penny.

There are some destinations where eating out is encouraged, as the food is cheap and plentiful and wonderful. There are others where affordable street food reigns and you can live like a king. And then there’s Australia, where a cup of coffee can cost you $5 and a lunchtime meal can easily be upwards of $20.

While there are certainly budget options out there (*mmm meat pies*), you should be prepared to make a game plan for feeding yourself through home cooked meals whenever possible. A life of white bread and vegemite isn’t one we’d encourage (though you should still try it!), but having some basic pasta dishes or favorite salads in your back pocket is smart planning. Ideally, these meals can be easily made in a shared kitchen!

7. You don’t have to work on land.

Do you dream of a life at sea? Then all aboard, baby! Dozens of vessels make daily trips for tourists to the beautiful coral reefs or nearby islands, and working on these boats can be a “salty experience” (in the right way). Become a ship hand, chef, or other crew member. Dream big, captain! 

Tourism is another area of employment that is poppin’ for international travelers. While the pay might be less than ideal, you’ll walk away rich in experience and waterlogged with new skills. Not bad for a trip abroad!

8. For professional jobs, you need to bring your A game.

If you’re looking to add some serious sauce to your resume with a full-time job in Australia, come prepared with your best foot forward. The financial centers of Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra offer dozens of jobs in finance, banking, and business.

These jobs are incredibly competitive and will require you to have that extra “oomph” to hire you instead of a local. You should treat these lines of work with the same earnest and professionalism that you would afford to an application in your home country.

9. You should take your job seriously, no matter what you do!

Finding jobs abroad in Australia is NOT synonymous with backpacking and traveling in Australia. While you can absolutely adventure with your new mates and see some pretty amazing sites (Uluru is a *must*), your focus should remain on the commitments you make as an employee to a company.

True meaningful travelers follow through with their work and do their best to integrate into the local communities, both in their workplace and beyond. They add value rather than only extract, and part of doing this is holding yourself accountable to the job that you have taken. This doesn’t mean that you have to stay forever or that there aren’t bummer jobs out there on the market that you should consider leaving, but we do recommend that you keep your intentions top of mind with every decision you make as expats in Australia.

Don’t give us (traveling Americans and other nationals) a bad rap in Oz, pretty please?

10. There are organizations that can make working abroad in Australia even easier.

Work in a hostel in exchange for free room & board! There are plenty of paid jobs abroad in Australia to choose from—and even more organizations out there that can help.

One way to approach working abroad in Australia is to wing it. Arrive in-country with your work visa, head to that hostel you pre-booked online, and start to network and get a lay of the land. You might end up getting a little desperate after a few weeks with no bites to your resume, and end up taking a job you *did not* envision for yourself (law office secretary?).

For example, if you want to bypass the potential stress of low quality employment, consider hiring an organization, such as Alliance Abroad or BUNAC. To work in Australia through the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417), you must

  • be a Canadian citizen
  • be between 18 and 35 years old (inclusive)
  • have a valid Canadian passport

What type of work visa do I need?

You need to apply for a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417).

Do I need a formal job or internship offer?

No, you don’t need a job offer (prearranged contract of employment) or a formal internship offer.

In  most cases , you can work for the same employer for a maximum of 6 months.

How long can I stay and work?

You can participate in Australia’s Working Holiday program up to 3 times (for a total of 36 months).

For the first 12-month participation:  You can work for up to 12 months (typically 6 months maximum per employer) and study for up to 4 months. The total participation is 12 months.

For the second 12-month participation:  You can work for up to 12 months and study for up to 4 months. The total participation is 12 months.

  • You can only participate if you completed at least  3 months  of “ Specified work ” while holding your  first  Working Holiday visa.

For the third 12-month participation:  You can work for up to 12 months and study for up to 4 months. The total participation is 12 months.

  • You can only participate if you completed at least  6 months  of “ Specified work ” while holding your  second  Working Holiday visa.

The Australian government released its federal budget for the year 2024-25, in which it reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to migration system reforms by implementing the plans outlined in its Migration Strategy. Some key measures include:

  • The introduction of immigration programs such as the new National Innovation Visa;
  • Changes to existing immigration policies, including relaxation of the work experience requirement for the Temporary Skill Shortage subclass 482 visa; and
  • Budget allocation for immigration-related programs and offices.

The situation

On May 14, 2024, the Australian government's Budget for the 2024-25 financial year was announced. The government reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to migration system reforms by implementing the plans outlined in its Migration Strategy .

Consistent with its Migration Strategy, the government intends to address skills needs, reshape permanent skilled migration to drive long-term prosperity, raise the standards for international students, protect foreign workers, and simplify the migration system.

Looking ahead

The Australian government has progressively commenced consultations to seek views from key stakeholders, industry bodies and the public to assist in forming the settings for each of the visa programs under review.

To date, consultations have opened on the draft Core Skills Occupation List set to be used in the Core Skills stream of the proposed Skills in Demand visa and review of the Points Test used in the General Skilled Migration visa program.

Consultations on developing the new National Innovation visa, strengthening integrity in the approved sponsor application process and evaluating regional migration settings for the Working Holiday Maker program will be released throughout 2024.

A young Kiwi couple have revealed the sad reason they didn’t want to stay in Australia.

Cassidy Skelton , 28, left New Zealand because her partner Nicolas, 32, who works in marketing, could make double the amount of money in Australia.

The couple share a young son and, because her partner’s income was set to increase so drastically, the move meant she could be a stay-at-home mum in Melbourne.

It seemed like the ideal situation.

“I had just given birth to our first child, and my fiance felt the fatherly pressure to provide more, so I had the option to not return to work. We also just wanted to work out being new parents away from home,” she told news.com.au.

Ms Skelton said they “loved” Melbourne, made lots of lovely friends and enjoyed the city’s vibrancy, but ultimately, the culture shock was too much.

The young couple went from being surrounded by family and friends to having to navigate living in a big and competitive city.

“I feel when you’re on holiday in Australia, it just feels like everything is bigger and better there, but when you actually live there, it’s so different,” she said.

Once they moved to Australia, they realised that the approach to work was vastly different from that of New Zealand.

“The working culture in Melbourne was the hardest to enjoy. We were shocked at how employers spoke to their staff and just the expectation to work overtime unpaid,” she said

Ms Skelton found it difficult to accept that work-life balance was not a priority. They’d made the move to improve their circumstances as a family and yet now were hardly seeing each other.

“There was also no focus or understanding on mental health or work life balance in our experience,” she said.

The young mum explained that the move made them realise how much they’d taken the laid-back, family-orientated Kiwi culture for “granted” and how overwhelming the hustle culture of Melbourne was.

“I think the hustle made us realise how much no amount of money was worth my fiance being out of the house for 10 hours a day five days a week,” she said.

Ms Skelton stressed that things in Melbourne were never terrible, but after a chat with her partner, she realised they both were only staying for the other one.

In a viral TikTok, Ms Skelton re-enacted their chat.

“The other day, my fiance goes to me. ‘Are you loving it here?’ I was like, ‘baby, I love how much you love here’, and he was like, ‘really, because I love it here because you love it here’,” she said.

The penny dropped and they both realised that neither of them enjoyed Australia more than New Zealand.

“Do neither of us like it here and are we pretending to like it because we think the other person is really happy?” she said.

Ms Skelton said she thinks the issue was that they were both just homesick and wanted to spend more time together as a family.

“We don’t like wearing shoes and we just want to chill the f**k out. If the biggest pull in Australia is more money, we just need to make more money at home,” she said.

Ultimately, the couple decided to return to New Zealand and, although that means Ms Skelton can’t afford to be a stay-at-home mum anymore, it still feels worth it.

It’s also given them the foundation to be confident enough to start their own marketing business , giving them flexibility.

“It was the biggest driver in us starting our business so we could be home with our little family,” she said.

Australian students looking for travel insurance, have all the cover options available to them that anyone else would. Common benefits include:

  • Emergency medical expenses: covers the cost of treatment should you fall ill, or get injured, while away. There may also be cover for evacuation and repatriation in severe medical cases
  • Personal liability: covers you if you injure someone else, or damage someone’s property
  • Trip cancellation: pays out should an emergency, such as illness or bereavement, prevent your trip from going ahead
  • Baggage and belongings: covers your luggage and personal effects. Look out for a total limit on cover, as well as sub-limits for individual items
  • Passport and personal documents: covers the cost of replacing travel documents if lost or stolen

  • Missed departure: covers the cost of additional accommodation and travel should an emergency cause you to miss your journey

Each policy offers its own combination of benefits, so it’s vital to check its product disclosure statement (PDS) for a breakdown of exactly what is included, and the cover levels. For instance, you’ll need baggage cover that matches or exceeds the value of the items you’re taking away, while protection for cancellation should cover the cost of your trip.

As a student, you’ll likely want to customise your policy to suit the purpose of your trip, and this is something you can do on most policies. As well as additional cover for gadgets, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, your policy will likely offer options for:

Adventure & Activities

Planning an adventure-filled, high-octane trip? Many policies offer cover for medium to high-risk sports and activities, such as trekking, abseiling and bungee jumping, at an extra cost. This comes in addition to the dozens of low-risk activities usually already covered automatically. Each insurer’s risk barometer is different so do check a policy’s PDS, for a list of what is and isn’t covered as standard. Protection for winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, usually comes as separate cover to purchase too.

Work & Volunteering

Perhaps you’re thinking of giving a little back to the locals by working in a paddy field, or you’ve seen an opportunity to earn money by doing a few gigs with your band. A travel insurance policy can cover unpaid and paid work, though the types of jobs covered may differ between insurers. There will also likely be restrictions such as the height at which you can work limited to two storeys and lower.

Short Trips or Long Stays

What’s called ‘single trip’ travel insurance can cover a short getaway of up to around 31 days, but there are also annual policies that cover multiple single trips within the space of 12 months. These save you having to take out cover for each trip, only require one set of paperwork and can sometimes work out cheaper than taking out cover each time you go away. Perhaps most suited to gap year takers is backpacker insurance , which is also known as long-stay or extended-stay insurance. It can cover trips lasting up to six, 12, 18 or 24 months, depending on the insurer. It may also allow you to come home a certain number of times in between travelling, without rendering it invalid.

To make the most out of your travel insurance, remember to take heed of the limitations and restrictions detailed in the PDS. These often are unique to a policy or insurer, so a friend’s could be different.

However, most insurers will not cover trips to destinations where the government has issued a ‘do not travel’ alert. Reasons may include natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. You can find out the status of your destination on the government’s Smartraveller website . It’s best to check the site before purchasing your policy, and again before travelling.

Insurers also often reject claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or intoxication by drink or drugs. If you’re taking part in sports and activities, make sure they are specifically covered in the PDS. There may be restrictions such as needing to wear a helmet, harness or other types of required safety gear, for an insurer to accept any potential related claims you make.

You can choose an insurer’s basic protection with limited benefits, or one of its more comprehensive policies, which should offer a wider range of cover types, and higher cover levels, at a higher cost. Just make sure you have the full amount of protection you need.

The cost of your policy will also depend on factors such as your travel destination, trip duration and any extra forms of cover you may choose to add on. While travel insurers typically don’t offer student discounts, insurance tends to be cheaper for young travellers, as they’re deemed less likely to claim on their policy for expensive medical costs. If you’re still a dependent, and travelling with your family, you may be eligible to be covered under your parents’ policy as some insurers allow this.

A policy’s excess is the set amount you will need to pay on each accepted claim. Rather than an out-of-pocket expense, it’s automatically deducted from a claim amount. In exchange for choosing to pay more in excess, an insurer will typically lower the policy premium, which is the cost of the cover. If you prefer to pay less in excess, your premium will likely be higher.

We ran quotes on the websites of the top three ranking insurers for comprehensive policies based on our research . We used the profile of a 20-year-old travelling to Thailand for 12 months.

Travel Insurance Direct and Bupa allows you to choose from several cover levels for trip cancellation on their policies. Allianz only offers this option on its comprehensive policy. Choosing higher cover levels bumps up the cost of the policy.

As most, if not all, travel insurers offer options that suit students on their standard cover, taking out insurance is simply a matter of comparing what they have to offer, and then buying the best policy for you. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on each insurer’s website.

You will need to enter details such as your age, travel destination(s), and trip duration. You will then be able to check the policies each insurer offers to suit your requirements. You may be able to add extra cover, such as for winter sports or gadgets, when entering your details, or after choosing a quote. Once you’ve decided on a policy you can pay for it online.

Does student travel insurance cover illness?

Emergency medical cover is a vital component of travel insurance, covering the cost of treatment for illness and injury you may experience while away.

This cover is crucial for many when travelling as Medicare isn’t available in other countries, and even when a country has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia, there may be exclusions to what it covers including repatriation costs. Without emergency medical cover, you would have to find another way to cover these expenses that can easily reach into the thousands of dollars.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

Insurers class a pre-existing medical condition as any condition you’ve had from before taking out a policy with them.

Only some insurers cover such conditions, and those that do often charge more for the benefit. You can check if a policy covers your condition in its PDS. On applying for cover, you will need to declare any conditions you have during the medical screening stage for future related claims to be considered.

Many studies show that IPL (a.k.a. intense pulsed light) is effective for long-term hair growth reduction. But how does IPL hair removal work? IPL is a broad-spectrum light that targets melanin, the pigment on the hair follicle, "destroying the root and stopping its regrowth,” says Bertha Baum, M.D. , a dermatologist in Boca Raton and Hallandale, Florida. "With regular use of these at-home devices, the treatment can be efficacious and safe."

With so many different options on the market, you'll want to choose a device that'll give you the best and safest results. To help you narrow it down, we compiled favorites tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute 's Beauty, Healthy and Sustainability Lab pros whose vetting process includes reviewing dozens of device manuals and checking the flash and sensors on each device, as well as recommendations from top dermatologists, all of which are FDA-cleared. Whenever Dr. Baum’s patients can’t make it into her office for their laser hair removal treatment, she recommends her favorite at-home IPL device, SmoothSkin. The Good Housekeeping Institute also signs off on this product: “ I saw noticeable results with this device after a single use ," says Beauty Lab former executive director Birnur Aral, Ph.D . It has a special sensor that automatically detects your skin color to apply the right amount of light intensity, and it won’t flash if your skin color is too dark or if the device is not held properly against your skin, making it safe and easy to use.

In addition, it has three comfort modes, which eliminates the guesswork of which mode to use for different areas of your body. Aral tested the speed mode on her legs and the gentle mode on her face and reported little discomfort. “I also find the user guide very informative and well written, which is rather a rarity in the device space,” she says. Testers agree: "I liked how easy the device was to use as a newbie to IPL devices," one shared. One thing to watch out for: the device turns on automatically when plugged in, so just be ready.

Nood is a rising star when it comes to IPL hair removal. The brand’s newest IPL hair removal handset, The Flasher 2.0, is light and compact. It includes seven intensity levels to choose from based on your skin’s sensitivity. It also comes with 600,000 flashes, and the brand will replace your device if you ever run out . Plus, the brand offers customers a full refund within 90 days, no questions asked, so you can have peace of mind knowing that you won't lose out if the device doesn’t work for you.

"The instructions were simple to understand," shared one tester. "I appreciate that it recommended a patch test, which I did conduct prior to a full treatment.” Another noted that she liked "how easy the device is to use."

Aral also tested The Flasher 2.0. She likes that the Nood has an on-off button, which some IPL devices do not have (meaning the ones that don't have the button can turn on as soon as you plug them in). However, she says that the bright light of the flashes escapes from the sides since it doesn't come with a precision head attachment for smaller, bony areas, potentially making it less effective and unsafe for your eyes.

With this speedy IPL hair removal device, the brand claims that you can treat both legs in under five minutes. Many reviewers say that this device works fast, taking little time in between each flash compared to other IPL devices they’ve tried. Like SmoothSkin, it includes a built-in sensor that automatically detects the color of your skin, maximizing the safety and the effectiveness of each treatment.

It also has three sensitivity modes: standard, gentle and extra gentle. GH Beauty Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler has used this device from Braun and noticed slowing of her leg hair growth after four weeks of using it once a week. Plus, users like how easy it is to use: “I like the different size heads it comes with for larger and smaller areas," one shared.

The BoSidin IPL hair removal device has a unique design with a rotating precision head to tackle areas that are difficult to reach (i.e., your bikini area). It also has six intensity levels and a built-in function that cools your skin before treatment to minimize any pain or sensitivity.

While we haven't tested it in the Lab, reviewers seem to be instant fans. One Amazon reviewer commented “ t oday was my first treatment, and it was honestly pain-free .” Another noted that it is "very comfortable to hold and angle the right way to reach the back of my thighs which is always a tricky spot.” One other added that "most of the hair isn't growing back anymore and my legs feel so smooth."

Keep in mind that the symbols for the treatment modes may be confusing (according to a tester), so pay attention when pressing.

Sensica touts its device’s professional quality technology. With built-in sensors which assess your skin color and proper placement of the device against your skin, you can have peace of mind that your treatments will be safe and effective.

The device’s cordless feature also allows you to use it anywhere you want. Although this IPL device is bulkier than others, reviewers say that it’s great for touch-ups after professional laser hair removal. "I'm impressed with the results!" one Amazon reviewer said. "I’ve used it about five times with two to three weeks apart, and I’m back smooth with no hair growth at all." Another reviewer raved over the results she and her daughters have had: "The best feature of this product is that it actually reduces hair growth! Considerably!"

Ulike's device comes equipped with cooling technology to help minimize discomfort during the hair removal process. "Its cooling feature comes on as soon as the device is turned on and lowers the surface temperature of skin to about 50 degrees when it makes contact with it to make the subsequent light flashes as painless as possible," Aral explains. Testers love that unique component: "The cooling feature helps with discomfort after firing it when the device is held on the treated spot," one said. GH Beauty Lab experts also found that the device fits easily into the palm of the hand during the treatment and was easy to maneuver.

"While the device does not come with a precision treatment head, the treatment area design allows for good contact between skin and the device," she says. Though it lacks an automatic color sensor, it does include well-described power levels and timing to treat various areas on the face and body.

The device cord has ample length, about seven feet, to give users more freedom when choosing their treatment spot. For treating the facial skin, a pair of foldable goggles are also included to prevent excess light from hurting the eyes.

Braun's latest IPL device is the first Smart IPL tool: it's Wi-Fi enabled and connects to an app which helps you keep track of your treatments and your hair reduction progress . You can track treatments for each body area and the app reminds you when it’s time for another treatment. Plus, it's super speedy: it claims to permanently reduce hair in just three weeks.

"While the technology is new, the hardware of the device itself is mostly the same as the Silk Expert Pro 5 (another of our picks on this list)," Butler says. A pricey tool, it has a variety of setting options including 10 intensity levels, three comfort levels and four heads: one wide, one standard and two precision heads for face and body (which are labeled so you won't confuse them). "The contact sensor and skin tone sensor on this IPL are really impressive," she adds. "It won’t flash until the lamp is fully pressed against the skin, so that you don’t accidentally look into the lamp."

Reviewers are fans of the quick results and lack of pain and irritation. "My face and stomach had visible results after just a couple of weeks," one Amazon reviewer shared. "I use it on the highest level consistently and it doesn't hurt me and I have no irritation."

Encased in a soft touch silicone, this pretty peach device has a very unique treatment head where the lamp is surrounded by a ring of soft silicone. Plus, there are air vents inside the silicone ring that deliver cool air to the treatment area.

Butler found that while the treatment head is much bigger than the other IPLs she looked at, the silicone head conforms to smaller areas (like the ankles) quite well . "However, on a very small area like the chin, I think some light will escape," she adds. She found it very comfortable to use on her legs, and never experienced discomfort, even at the highest setting.

Butler was not a fan of the companion app and that the device must be “unlocked” by scanning a barcode or entering the serial number into the app before the first use. "I found the unlocking process unnecessary; I had to try multiple times to get it to activate." Fortunately that process only takes place once at the initial use. An Amazon reviewer agreed with Butler's overall take on the device: "It's easy to use and appears to be effective, however, you need to download the app," the reviewer said.

Ulike's newest IPL device has upped its game in features and power levels. "It has four modes for convenience: a fast mode, a normal mode, a high power mode and a stubborn hair mode, each with increasing light intensity," explains Butler. " The stubborn hair mode is designed for areas of thicker hair, like the underarms, and emits two flashes per press of the button, a feature I haven’t seen from other devices ." It also has an automatic flash mode for gliding on large areas and a manual flash mode for small areas.

A skin tone sensor adjusts the light intensity automatically based on skin tone, a new feature for Ulike. Butler notes that the cooling feature of the treatment head is also unique: "The treatment head got so cold while the device was on that I felt condensation forming on it before I started my treatment." This feature is designed to comfort the skin as the flashes heat up the hair follicles.

"Overall, the Air 10 has been a game-changer for my hair removal routine," one Amazon reviewer said. "It's effective, convenient and comfortable to use, even on stubborn areas like my chin." Other reviewers were thrilled with the ease of use and quick results, with just a few noting the large and clunky size of the tool.

How we test IPL hair removal devices

Our GH Beauty Lab experts regularly test all kinds of hair removal products, from waxing kits and razors to depilatory creams and epilators .

To test IPL devices, we reviewed the device manuals from each tool to compare specs including expected service lifetime and maximum energy output, as well as features like automatic skin tone sensing. We tried the skin contact sensor on each tested model to check that it would only flash when in contact with skin. We also checked each device’s cord length, which can impact ease of use.

Along with evaluating and comparing the results of each device, we took note of their features, safety and ease of use. We also gave other devices to people in the Institute to use at home. After testing, they filled out a survey about the device’s ease of use, performance and their overall satisfaction with it.

What to look for when shopping for IPL hair removal devices

✔️ FDA clearance : The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a government agency that regulates the safety and efficacy of products on the market. When an IPL hair removal device is FDA-cleared, it means that the agency has evaluated it and determined that it is safe and effective for consumer use. In other words, the device works as intended, and it will not cause harm if used as instructed. Look for IPL hair removal devices with FDA clearance to ensure it meets these standards, as all of our picks above have.

✔️ Number of flashes : Flashes are the quick bursts of light that the lamp in an IPL hair removal device produces to treat an area of skin. These lamps can burn out just like the standard light bulbs you use around your house. In some IPL devices, the lamp can only produce a limited number of flashes until it burns out, at which point you would need to replace the cartridge or the device itself. So, the more flashes, the better. However, many of the newer IPL devices come with unlimited flashes, which means you don't have to worry about the lamp burning out while you enjoy a lifetime of smooth skin.

✔️ Automatic light intensity adjustment : If you’re nervous about trying IPL hair removal, shop for devices that automatically detect your skin tone and adjust the light intensity level. Otherwise, you’ll have to manually figure out what level is best for you by deciphering a skin tone chart in the instructions or by starting at the lowest level and working your way up.

✔️ Safety features : Some IPL hair removal devices have sensors that won’t flash if your skin tone is too dark or if the device is not held properly against the skin. Additionally, IPL is a broad spectrum light, meaning it consists of a range of wavelengths, and this may include UV wavelengths that can damage your skin. Most IPL devices have a filter that blocks out the UV light, but always double-check for it.

✔️ Design and attachments : Think about where you are looking to remove hair on your body. “Choose a device that has attachments to cover smaller, bony, curved areas such as the upper lip, fingers, toes and chin,” Aral advises.

✔️ Clear instructions : Whether you’re new to IPL or a seasoned expert, Aral says you should always read the included instructions before operating. “Look for a product that has a great instruction booklet,” she recommends. You can often find the instructions online or watch a video tutorial before you make the purchase as well.

✔️ Cord length : “Ensure the product has a long enough cord to provide for a flexible user experience,” Aral says. For maximum versatility, choose a device that's cordless.

✔️ Money back offers : If you’re new to IPL and aren’t sure if it’s right for you, try a brand that offers customers a money-back guarantee. If you don’t like it or aren't getting the desired results, you can return it for a refund.

Does IPL really remove hair permanently?

"

While the results from IPL hair removal can last a long time, it is not permanent. “Now, we refer to it as laser hair reduction instead of laser hair removal, and the same applies to IPL,” says Dr. Baum. “In general, hormones and other factors can affect the laser and IPL results, and the hair may come back.” But for some of her patients, the results last years without any touch-ups .

What is better: IPL or laser hair removal?

"

“IPL works by emitting scattered wavelengths of light, unlike laser treatments which emit a specific wavelength,” Dr. Baum explains. Both are effective treatment options, however, there are pros and cons to both. While IPL hair removal is less expensive and available for at-home use, laser hair removal takes fewer treatment sessions to see results , and it works on all skin tones. When deciding which one is the better option for you, first consult with your dermatologist, then consider your needs and the kind of results you want to see.

Is IPL hair removal safe?

In general, IPL hair removal is safe as long as you follow the instructions and take the necessary precautions, but before trying this at-home body hair removal treatment, first consult with your dermatologist to ensure you are a good candidate.

It typically does not work for dark skin tones (skin types 5 and 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale ) or light hair colors (blonde, red or gray ), and it’s possible to damage your skin if you use the device improperly. As such, Dr. Baum warns that those with skin types 5 and 6 on the Fitzpatrick scale should not undergo IPL treatments , and those with skin type 4 should be cautious .

Dr. Baum also recommends a patch test before treating an entire area, but be mindful to only treat below your cheek line. If you’re not careful, you may see side effects, such as redness, skin discoloration, burning and scarring.

“Also, it’s important to be aware of certain conditions which could have an effect on [IPL] hair removal [and should be avoided], such as medications and photosensitive conditions as well as pregnancy and breastfeeding,” Dr. Baum says. “You should also avoid it when you have certain skin conditions, such as active infections on the skin.” Work around dark freckles or tattoos, as they are susceptible to burning.

How to use an IPL hair removal device

When using any IPL device, start with shaving before treatment (never wax, as that will fully remove the hair that the light targets). Dr. Baum also recommends avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment due to higher skin sensitivities.

Above all, always follow the product instructions with care , as each device works differently. With some devices, it is recommended to only treat once a week; for others, it might be twice a week. Be sure to do a patch test on a small area of skin to check for irritation or reactions before using it on larger areas.

Where can IPL hair removal devices be used?

As a general rule, "IPL devices can be used on facial hair below the cheekbones and on arms, underarms, legs and the bikini line," explains Butler, who extensively vetted the recommendations in this roundup. "They should not be used on the eyebrows, nipples, genitals, around the anus or over tattoos, moles or any dark spot on the skin." Most manuals also warn against using the devices over areas that have been injected with fillers or neurotoxins. "Be sure to read the manual to see all the warnings and instructions for your device before using," advises Butler.

Can you use IPL on intimate areas?

"Most IPL devices I have reviewed advise against using them on the genitals and only advise use on the bikini line," says Butler. "However, the instruction manual of the Braun Skin i Expert is the first one I’ve seen that actually has instructions for how to use it in the pubic area for females only, which I believe to be an advantage of this product."

Butler notes that IPL hair removal devices can’t be used on every single place where pubic hair may be, as "it’s not advisable to use these on very sensitive areas like the labia minora or the anus." Skin is generally darker in those areas, so there is an increased risk of burns.

How long does it take for IPL hair removal to work?

It depends on your skin type and hair color as well as the level of light intensity you use, but typically, you should see results after four weeks . Some users may even see results after one treatment session. After six to eight weeks, your hair should be almost completely gone, and you should only need a touch-up once per month.

What are the side effects of IPL hair removal?

"Generally, common side effects include mild discomfort, warm feeling or tingling sensations during treatment and skin redness or itchiness shortly after treatment," says Butler. But these symptoms should subside quickly.

"More serious, less common side effects can include intense pain, redness that lasts for days, temporary changes in skin color or skin burns," she says. "If you experience these, stop using the device and see a doctor." Before using a new device, Butler recommends reading the manual for a full list of potential side effects and how to respond to them.

A note on purpose and scope 

The purpose of the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2023–2033 (the Strategy) is to outline a national vision for WHS – Safe and healthy work for all – and set the platform for delivering on key WHS improvements.

To do this, the Strategy articulates a primary goal supported by national targets, and the enablers, actions and system-wide shifts required to achieve this goal over the next ten years.

This Strategy guides the work of Safe Work Australia and its Members, including representatives of governments, employers and workers – but should also contribute to the work and understanding of all in the WHS system including researchers, experts and practitioners who play a role in owning, contributing to and realising the national vision.

Our national vision —  Safe and healthy work for all — sets the agenda for our response to key WHS challenges over the next ten years.

The last ten years has seen Australia make significant progress towards improving our approach to WHS including enhancing the model regulatory framework, responding to persistent WHS challenges, and reducing harm as measured against targets set by the previous Strategy. Despite this progress, Australia has further to go in improving WHS outcomes and ensuring the WHS system is ready to address emerging challenges over the next decade.

Injury and fatality rates have fallen significantly over the last decade, however progress has slowed. We need ongoing dedication and commitment of all stakeholders — governments, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), workers, industry, unions and WHS practitioners—to continue to ensure that workers return home safely. We cannot be complacent — shifting economic, social, and environmental trends requires evolving and iterative approaches to achieve our vision.

Work-related injury and illness impacts workers and their families deeply. Reducing these can also contribute to significant economic growth – some tens of billions of dollars each year. To make further gains, we need to ensure that WHS is core to how we do business in Australia. We want WHS conversations to be commonplace in every workplace across the country. Education, innovation, and collaboration will be critical enablers of our success.   This vision will also need to be achieved in a new context. Our economy has seen changes in the industrial base and the nature of work with a further acceleration towards services, increasing integration and exposure to global trade, and rapid adoption of digital technology from small businesses through to multinationals. Our society has also changed with population growth in outer suburbs of major cities, demographic shifts and changing expectations around care and family. Our environment is now experiencing the increasing impacts of climate change. These trends will impact work in different ways.

Against this background, the Strategy sets a clear, unifying national goal to reduce worker fatalities, injuries and illness. It sets out forward-looking actions to work towards, with tangible and achievable targets to focus efforts, as stakeholders develop and implement their own solutions to the challenges ahead.

All stakeholders in our WHS system can make a valuable contribution to creating safe and healthy work that promotes the social and economic wellbeing of workers in Australia. Safe and healthy work is the result of combined efforts and a fundamental commitment to collaboration from all governments, industry, and workers and their representatives. This Strategy is agreed by Safe Work Australia Members and ministers with responsibility for WHS, demonstrating the commitment of all parties to work cooperatively to drive continual improvements in Australia’s WHS performance.
