another must.see.tourist spot in mayoyao is the a’pfaw Mahencha waterfall
yung 1000 steps pa sa Ifugao Kiangan at Hungduan ang gusto kong puntahan. may hotel po ba sa lugar na yan? Napuntahan ko na ang Mayoyao at sobrang ganda niya.
The 1000 steps and Forest Library in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao is also a “must see” and can be included in the list. You can see the spectacular view overlooking the Magat Dam and the surrounding fields of the minicipality. You can also see the birds coming to rest on the mountains late in the afternoon and see them fly out again early in the morning. The sunset view reflection on the Magat Dam reservoir is also amazing.
If wanted to see all waterfalls and caves how many days would it take me.
Grabe ang ganda ng shots, while doing my research feel ko nag tour na din akooo! Love it 😍
Those places are my very wish to see and experience, hopefully soon.

Start your Ifugao escapade from Banaue, home of the famous Banaue Rice Terraces.
The Batad Rice Terraces is one of the top tourist spots in Ifugao. The majestic amphitheater-shaped rice terraces carved on the mountains is proof of the engineering and architectural skills of the Ifugao ancestors. Batad Rice Terraces is part of the famous Rice Terraces of the Cordillera, the 8th Wonder of the Ancient World, and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ifugao ancestors used big boulders from the river at the foot of the mountain to build the rice paddies. Isn’t it a wonder?
How to get there? From Banaue, take a jeepney up to Saddle Point. From Saddle Point, hike for less than an hour to reach Batad. Head to Banaue tourist information center for current advice.
From Batad, hike for almost an hour to reach Tappiyah Falls. If you’re not used to trekking on the mountain, it’s better to bring with you a cane or a stick to support you from falling down the rice paddies. Falling from 75 meters high, the Tappiyah Falls welcomes visitors to enjoy its cold water. It is better to go there during summer, from March to May, because the water is unbearable during colder months.
One of the must-see Banaue tourist spots is the Banaue Viewpoint. It offers visitors the best glance at the Banaue Rice Terraces and there are some shops to buy souvenirs also. Just like the Batad Rice Terraces, the Banaue Rice Terraces are carved by hands more than 2000 years ago by Ifugao ancestors. Stopping by Banaue ethnic village is also recommended.
Of the five rice terraces of Ifugao included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bangaan Rice Terraces is the most preserved but most accessible. Alternatively, Nagacadan rice terraces come highly recommended also.
One great thing about Hapao Rice Terraces is you can experience walking on the rice paddies and see the farmers working on the fields during planting season. It is one of the great places for farmers to watch!
Bogyah Hot Spring is a great place to relax after visiting the different tourist spots of Banaue and Hungduan. From Hapao, hike for 45 minutes to reach the hot spring and enjoy a relaxing sulfur bath to soothe your tired body and mind.
Adjacent to the hot spring is the cold water of Hungduan River, where you can enjoy a cold bath.
The local tourism office built a mini pool, which can accommodate ten people, to contain the water coming from the spring.
This list of Ifugao tourist spots wouldn’t be complete without Mt. Napulawan. This mountain got its name from the Tuwali word “pulaw” which means “white” because fogs and clouds hover over its mountaintop every day.
Mt. Napulawan is a mysterious mountain rising 2, 643 meters above sea level. History says that General Tomoyuki Yamashita sought refuge in this mountain during World War II.
Hiking to the peak of this mountain may take 2 to 3 days which is one of the tiring but fun outdoor activities in the area. If need, you can seek help from the Tourism Office of Hungduan to make your trip seamless!
Your trip to the town of Hungduan will not be complete without visiting Balentimol Falls situated at the foot of Mt. Napulawan. Dropping by Balentimol Falls is one the best destination for hikers looking for refreshing waterfalls to massage their tired bodies after exploring Mt. Napulawan.
The vast mountain of Hungduan is the source of another waterfall, the Buyukan Falls. Going to the falls can be risky because of the trail; that’s why they only recommend expert hikers to take the three-hour hike to reach the falls.
The best time to visit Buyukam Falls is during summer because leeches swarm the falls during the rainy season.
Another mountain to explore in the town of Hungduan is Mt. Anapowan. It is a perfect camping site for hikers and nature-lovers. From the summit of Mt. Anapowan, one can see the municipalities of Kiangan and Lagawe and the green mountains, pine forest, and terraces of Hungduan.
Bintakan and Nahtoban Caves are located in the province’s capital town of Lagawe. You can take a tricycle from the town proper and hike for about 20 minutes to reach the cave’s entrance.
This three-room cave overlooks the Ibulao River from the entrance. Inside the cave are different forms and shapes of stalagmites and stalactites formed from dripping waters.
On the other hand, Nahtoban Cave is 4 kilometers away from the town proper and has larger chambers than Bintakan Cave.
Kiangan Shrine was erected to commemorate the surrender of General Tomoyuki Yamashita during the Second World War.
It is a symbol of the bravery of Filipino veteran soldiers. Every 2nd of September, the provincial government of Ifugao hosts a program at the shrine to honor these veteran soldiers. The shrine is shaped like an Ifugao native house, and when you reach the top, you can see the grand mountains of Ifugao.
Inside the compound of the Kiangan Shrine is the Ifugao Museum. The museum houses different artifacts of the Ifugao people and their ancestors.
Upon entering the museum, visitors are welcomed by a recording of the Ifugao gong and a video clip of essential events in the Ifugao history and culture.
The Open Museum is part of Nagacadan village in Kiangan, where tourists can personally experience planting rice in the terraces, listen to century-old songs and chants, and examine carefully old native houses and granaries. Visitors can walk on rice paddies, usually a meter high, and can have a short conversation with local villagers about their way of living also.
Near the rice terraces is the Imbuliklik Rock, which measures 22 meters high. If you’re into mountain climbing, you may try going to the top of this enormous rock which makes it one of the fun ifugao tourist spots.
Before leaving Kiangan, head to Ambuaya Lake at Barangay Ambabag. It is a perfect place for picnics. Green vegetation surrounds the area making it a serene place to relax and enjoy nature. Legend says that a boy and his grandmother made fun of a leech, which put the curse to the place and made it into a lake.
To reach this cave, one needs to hike for almost two hours from the foot of the mountain to the cave’s entrance. At the cave’s entrance, you need to go down using a ladder of more than 50 steps. It takes two to three hours to navigate through the crevices of the cave. Stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes are present everywhere.
On the other hand, the most challenging part of exploring the cave is going through narrow and slippery spaces. So, prepare yourself to be wet and muddy.
Near the end of the cave is a cold stream, and when you reach the end, you’ll be welcomed by a waterfall with clear water inviting your tired body to take a cold bath.
Himmifoy Falls, located in Lamut, Ifugao, is one local tourist attraction to be discovered. The word “himmifoy” is an Ayangan term, which means “gutter.”
One can reach Himmifoy Falls through an hour and a half hiking from the national road. The distinctive feature of this falls is its heart-shaped basin of cold water.
Matangili Rock Formation is located at Lamut, Ifugao. It takes a 2-3 hours hike to reach the summit and enjoy the breath-taking view of the green valley below.
One thing hikers expect when reaching Matangili Rock is the sea of clouds surrounding the area. However, you need to be early to experience this one-of-a-kind experience.
Dar-awan Viewpoint at Lamut, Ifugao offers a beautiful view of the Ibulao River flowing beside the green cornfields of Hapid village.
The panoramic view of the valley, along with the river, is ideal for picture-taking and picnics, making it one of the popular tourist attractions. To go there, take a tricycle from Lamut town proper and savor a 20-minute ride along rolling hills.
The Mayoyao Rice Terraces, as a whole, is also listed as World Heritage Site and as majestic as the other rice terraces in the province.
Rice terraces are present in almost all parts of Mayoyao, like in Chumang, Chaya, Banhar, Mapawoy, Bongan, and Buninan.
Tenogtog falls in Mayoyao, Ifugao is one must-see tourist destination. The word “tenogtog” means “chopped.” Before, hunters chop the meat of their prey like wild pigs or deers near the falls.
Unlike Tappiyah Falls, Tenogtog Falls, which is a 20-minute hike from the town proper, has three tiers of falls with small basins in between them.
The Apfo’or Burial Tombs were made with large stones like paddies of the rice terraces. These dome-shaped graves, which are found only in Mayoyao, are the tombs of the bones of ancient warriors and wealthy Ifugaos before.
Another mountain to climb in Ifugao is Mt. Nagchayan in Mayoyao. It is 1, 445 above sea level and can be an excellent destination for hikers and mountain climbers.
On top of Mt. Nagchayan, you can view the mountain ranges dotted with rice terraces.
Another waterfall to discover in Mayoyao is Pikhu Falls. It has no basin at its base because of big boulders, but one can lay down on its cascading water and savor the soothing fall.
While laying down enjoying the freshwater, let your eyes feast on the surrounding green landscapes and vegetation.
25. 1000 Steps
Aside from the majestic mountains of Ifugao to climb, there is also the 1,000 steps in Alfonso Lista to ascend. Upon reaching the last step, one can have a great view of the Magat Dam, Asia’s largest dam.
Also, keep your eyes peel for the Ifugao festival which can be a great way to understand the local culture. There you have it, the 25 must-see Ifugao tourist spots in the Philippines!

15 Best IFUGAO TOURIST SPOTS (History, Heritage & Nature)
There has been much debate and questions surrounding the Filipino identity and how we are so different from our neighboring countries. Some claim we are too westernized for comfort that we write with the roman alphabet instead of our indigenous writing, baybayin .
Meanwhile, our neighboring Asian countries still use the writing method of their ancestors. I know that the Filipino culture is an amalgamation of different cultures as diverse as its people; however, it still saddens me that many things that are distinctly Filipino have been left to the past and no longer passed down to the younger generation.
I thought that was just it, a sad reality to accept. Until I went to the mountain region in the Philippines and discovered that a significant trace of Filipino culture is still very much intact and practiced by the Ifugaos. This is one of the reasons Ifugao (and the rest of the Cordillera region ) is an important destination in the Philippines, not only for foreigners but more so for us Filipinos.
Beautiful… Thanks for the photo Ronald Ruiz!
Ifugao is one of the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the least populous region in the Philippines. It’s a landlocked province with 11 municipalities; its capital city is Lagawe. There are many variations as to the etymology of Ifugao, such as it was derived from the words, i-pugo meaning “people from the hill,” pugaw meaning “the cosmic earth,” and ipugo, a type of grain in local mythology.
Ifugao is among the smallest provinces in the Philippines, with a total land area of 251,778 hectares. The people from this region are called “Ifugaos,” but they are also referred to as “Igorot” or Ygolote, the term used by Spanish conquistadors.
Nice hat. LOL!
Ifugao is one of the best destinations in the Philippines for a number of reasons; the landscape is varied and stunning, the people are friendly and welcoming, and the region is rich in culture and history. If you want to explore Ifugao, the Land of the Eighth World Wonder, here are some of the best tourist spots to visit:
1. Batad Rice Terraces
Batad Rice Terraces is one of the five included in the list of Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Batad Amphitheater is a sight to behold, but if you want to see it, prepare for the arduous hike ahead.
When I went there with my friends, we took an 11-hour bus ride to Ifugao, then another hour of a jeep ride to Batad. If you’re up for an adventure, you may do it “taplod” style; you’ll be sitting on the jeep’s roof. It was such an exhilarating experience—it might be scary to some—to feel the wind on your face and enjoy the unobstructed views of the mountains.
Star of the trek going to the village.
Our morning at Batad.
After one hour, we reached the jump-off point, where we had to trek for another hour (it felt like forever, to be honest) over steep and coarse trails that were sometimes slippery. Through our walk, we spotted a few locals sitting in front of their houses, carving wooden objects. Wood carving is part of the Ifugao culture; they make wooden trinkets, furniture, and idols of Ifugao deities, which they use for their own home or sell to tourists.
We were rewarded for all of our labor by the sight of the famed Batad Rice Terraces. It’s one of the most majestic views I have ever seen; it is no wonder many people are willing to take the long trek to get there.

2. Banaue Rice Terraces
The most famous attraction in the Ifugao province is the Banaue Rice Terraces, a man-made rice field carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago. It is sometimes referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World.
The terraces were built at roughly 4,900 feet above sea level and are sustained by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests.
Despite its popularity, it’s not included in the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras that were recognized on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. It didn’t make it to the list as it received a low score in the integrity criterion of UNESCO due to the numerous modern infrastructures surrounding the terraces.
However, Banaue Rice Terraces remains popular with tourists as it’s easier to visit than other rice terraces in Ifugao.

3. Tappiya Falls
When you visit Batad Rice Terraces, trekking to Tappiya Falls is likely to be your next point of business as it’s just a kilometer away from Batad Amphitheater. The 230-foot waterfall is a popular side trip in Batad, and people go there to appreciate the view, have a picnic, and swim in its cold waters.
the majestic Tappiya Falls from afar.
Enjoying Tappiya Falls with good friends.
According to our guide, it only takes 30 minutes to get there, but based on our experience, it took us about two hours before we reached the waterfalls. It wasn’t an easy hike by any means, so be prepared to walk over narrow trails and uneven, steep stairs.
With your effort, you will see the popular waterfall in all its glory. Get your swimsuit ready to cool off in the waters but remember to stay in the shallow parts because the closer you get to the waterfalls, the deeper the water gets. It could be dangerous, given how strong the impact the waterfalls make as they cascade down the river.

4. Bangaan Rice Terraces
Aside from Batad, Bangaan Rice Terraces is also included in Cordillera Rice Terraces, UNESCO World Heritage List. What makes this site unique is the existence of “ba-leh,” the traditional Ifugao houses; hence it’s been recognized as a Living Cultural Landscape.
Wow! – Photo Credit: Ronald Ruiz 🙂
When I went to Banaue in 2015, I didn’t know about Bangaan until one of my travel companions mentioned that we were going there before visiting Batad. A sentiment I shared with most Filipinos, who were only taught about Banaue Rice Terraces back in grade school. It’s a good thing that it was included in our itinerary; otherwise, I would have missed this underrated beauty.
One of the best viewpoints to see Bangaan Rice Terraces is at Batad Junction. Get your camera ready because trust me, you will want to get as many photo souvenirs as you can once you see this attraction.

You need to hike for about 40 minutes to an hour to get to the hot springs, past the view of mountains, rice fields, and Hapao River. Don’t worry because it will be well worth the effort, especially when the weariness melts away as soon as your body hits the therapeutic, warm water.
13. Mayoyao Rice Terraces
Mayoyao Rice Terraces is located in Mayoyao municipality in Ifugao. It’s included in the five Cordillera Rice Terraces on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It’s less touristy and least visited compared with other rice terraces in the province; however, its charm rivals its counterparts.

Despite this, don’t get discouraged for Banaue offers more than just beauty but a whole lot of unique experiences you shouldn’t miss.
If you’re planning a trip to Banaue, below are some tourist attractions that you should take note of and add to your itinerary.
Banaue is the entry point to the rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras. A trip to this highland is not complete without checking out the local wonders of the Philippines on this side of the country.
You can explore its rice terrace clusters, five of which have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites : the Batad Rice Terraces, Nagacadan Rice Terraces, Hungduan (Hapao) Rice Terraces, Mayoyao Rice Terraces, and Bangaan Rice Terraces.
Although not a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the presence of modern structures surrounding it, Banaue Rice Terraces is still considered a National Cultural Treasure of the country.
It is commonly referred to by the locals in Banaue as the 8th Wonder of the World. So, you should still include it in your itinerary to get a complete feel of what Banaue has to offer.
While some tourists opt for just a quick glance at the rice terraces as a proud moment since it’s famous for being in the PHP1000 bill, overnight treks make the experience more unique.
You can join a Banaue heritage tour or customize your own if you’re traveling with a group.
It is one of the five inscribed clusters declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites alongside Nagacadan Rice Terraces, Hungduan Rice Terraces, Mayoyao Rice Terraces, and Bangaan Rice Terraces.
To start your Batad adventure, you’ll have to get to the town proper of Banaue, about 18 kilometers away from Batad. From Banaue, you will have to register at the tourism office and pay an environmental fee.
Then, you can take a public jeep to an area called Saddle, the endpoint of all public commuter vehicles going to Batad.
Other alternative transportation to Saddle is a private jeep or a tricycle that you can charter. The journey to the Saddle is about one hour. Once you’ve been dropped off, you need to walk for at least 20 minutes to get to the village of Batad. So, your Batad daydream begins.
These amphitheater-like rice terraces are a favorite among local and foreign tourists. If it is your first time, get ready to find yourself in awe of its natural beauty.
But admiring it is more than just looking out into the vast emptiness, with the blue sky and lush greenery stretching before you; admiring it means hiking and trekking the rice terraces and discovering hidden gems such as Tappiya Falls and Awa View Deck.
Although less popular than its neighboring rice terraces, Bangaan Rice Terraces is yet another wondrous landscape to see. From the town proper of Banaue, you may take a jeepney bound to Bangaan or hire a tricycle for a half-day trip.
Bangaan is 15 kilometers from the town proper via the town of Mayoyao and almost one kilometer after the Batad junction.
Staying in Bangaan will make you appreciate the simplicity of life with only the basic accommodation available to tourists, allowing you to mingle with the locals and observe their everyday musings.
Expect to be surrounded by the sight of the valley, the fields, the mountains, and a couple of traditional Ifugao houses which are wooden huts with cogon roofing.
To explore Bangaan Rice Terraces, you will have to trek down for around 20 minutes. Be prepared to have your physical strength tested as it can also be a grueling hike back for those who are not physically fit.
If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, Bangaan can also be your jump-off point for an even longer journey, one that traverses the Bangaan Rice Terraces to Batad and continues to the villages of Cambulo and Pula and ends in Banaue.
What makes these rice terraces unique from the rest is that it’s the longest yet the easiest to trek due to its gentle slopes. The terraces are made of solid stone walls with heights reaching up to 20 feet. Its view deck is also just beside the road making it easier to bask in its captivating beauty.
Although the hike is a lot easier, getting to Hungduan is not, as you will have to pass through bumpy mountain roads. But it’s worth it once you’re greeted with the picturesque greenery.
Hapao also offers relaxing views of mountain streams, a river in the middle of the trail, and of Bogyah Hot Springs that you can take advantage of after a day of traveling and trekking.
The hike can be made more memorable by hiring a local guide who can tell you more about Hungduan, its people and culture, and some secret spots hidden in the hills.
Having a quick stop at any of these viewpoints will give you a chance to interact with the locals and take snapshots of elderly Igorot and Bontoc women clad in their full tribal wear.
There are also souvenir shops on the way to the viewpoints for those shopping for mementos and local cafes for a quick refreshment.
Revel in the rich history and culture of the Igorots by observing the vintage photographs depicting the life of the people, books written by famous anthropologist Otley Beyer who moved to Banaue in the 1900s, and some treasured jewelry, weaponry, Igorot artifacts, and traditional clothing and mountain baskets.
There's an entrance fee to the museum and it’s open from 7AM to 4PM every day.
It gives a glimpse of the typical life of the locals with the native houses and the rice terraces surrounding it. To get to this village, simply get off at Banaue Hotel and walk downhill.
It’s better to visit this village while it’s still being preserved by the people. With time and economic challenges slowly threatening the community’s sustainability, it will not be long enough until the Tam-An heritage will be damaged.
Make sure to respect the culture of the people and practice responsible tourism when you visit though to help preserve the heritage of Tam-An.
If you’re looking for one of the best places to stay in Banaue, then Banaue Ethnic Village and Pine Forest Resort just might as well be on your list.
Just around 7 kilometers away from the town proper and just about 2 kilometers past the Banaue Viewpoint, this accommodation can easily be accessed via a jeepney.
It gives tourists a more authentic experience with its accommodations designed like native Ifugao huts. You can choose from several accommodation options, from standard rooms to modern and traditional Ifugao houses.
And because it’s tucked away from the hustle of the town, you’re sure to have a peaceful vacation surrounded by rice paddies and pine trees, occasional chirping of the birds, and a chilly, cool breeze from the riverside.
There’s also an organic farm and a pool with water coming from natural spring, giving guests like you a more relaxing experience.
If you want to bring home some intricately sculptured rice gods, also known as bululs by the locals, Hiwang Village has some of the best to offer. Houses in Hiwang Village are carefully preserved by the locals.
Don’t be shocked to find skulls displayed outside of the native huts too as this is part of their culture, a practice where heads were cut off during headhunting and skewed on a bamboo. After offering it to the chieftain, it will then be buried until the skin rots for two years before it is put outside the house.
The bridge also serves as a connection to Batad, home to the Batad Rice Terraces.
If you have seen photos of tourists with a welcome arch in Banaue as their backdrop, that’s the Banaue’s Arch. It may be unimpressive for some but still a good starting point for your Banaue adventure.
Here you will find little stalls selling snacks for starving tourists who were just about to end their close to 9-hour long road trip from Manila. A quick look on the side of the arch and you will almost catch a glimpse of the beauty that awaits you.
Located along Banaue Bontoc road, this view deck is just 10 to 15 minutes away from the town proper and offers tourists a beautiful scenery of the terraces.
It’s best to check out this viewpoint in the morning until noon as it may get foggier in the afternoon. There are also souvenir shops where you can find Ifugao wood carvings and accessories.
If you want the best view of the Batad Rice Terraces, go trek to Awa View Deck and be treated to a panoramic view of the century-old treasure. To get to this spot, you will have to endure steep descents and ascents for more than an hour.
This is not for the faint-hearted. It’s best to start the trek in the morning when the chilly air can still kiss your skin and make the hike more tolerable.
Awa View Deck is also a start-off point for those looking to visit Sitio Patpat, a little village with its own share of rice terraces too.
Expect to experience a more grueling trek on your way back with rocky and slippery land to step on. So, if you’re worried about getting hungry and draining your energy in both ways, make sure to bring extra food with you.
Exploring the Batad Rice Terraces and coming from Banaue will not be possible without passing by Batad Saddle Point, the entry point to the UNESCO World Heritage site.
You can charter a jeepney, that travels twice daily, from Banaue to get here.
Soak up not only the beauty of the Batad Rice Terraces but also the refreshing water from Tappiya Falls, a hidden gem nestled within the villages of the Cordilleras.
Yet another challenging trek is needed to find it though because as with all things in life, nothing good comes easy. So, prepare yourself to be mesmerized with this waterfall after a long journey.
You may begin your hour-long trek from Ramon’s Native Homestay. There are resting camps along the way, enough for you to refuel for the rest of the trip. If any, this trek to the falls will also give you a closer look at the rice terraces.
Bring a walking stick with you to make your step easier as you will be encountering muddy slopes and slippery footpaths. If you want to stay and swim a little longer, try starting your Tappiya adventure early morning.
If you're craving for some real mountain hiking, the Cordilleras have mountains you can conquer, aside from trekking the rice terraces. One of which is Mt. Amuyao, a 2,702-meter-high mountain, which is located in Sitio Macalana in Barlig and is the highest peak in the Mountain Province.
It is popular among seasoned hikers so do not force yourself to hike it if you’re not physically ready. Before you can hike Mt. Amuyao, you will need to register first at the Municipal Tourism Office of Barlig and pay a corresponding fee.
Hiring a guide is also required. You may also choose to hike overnight. Hiking Mt. Amuyao takes around three to five hours, depending on your group’s pace. Side trips to other spots such as Tomallan Falls, Monkingub Falls, and Lake Tufub among others can also take up your time.
The cold weather atop the highest point in the Philippines calls for a refreshing warm dip. Thanks to Bogyah Hot Spring, you’re sure to have exactly what you need.
Located at the upper part of the Hapao River and sandwiched between Barangays Hapao and Baang, Bogyah Hot Spring can be accessed via a close to 40-minute hike from the national road, beside the muddy rice paddies of Hapao Rice Terraces.
If you have never walked atop a high rice field before, then this will be one for the books so make sure to document every step. However, it’s not as hard as the trail going to Tappiya Falls. With temperatures ranging from 39 to 40°, your aching muscles from all those treks will definitely be soothed.
Another gem of Hungduan in Ifugao Province is Mt. Napulawan not only for being enchanting but because of its historical significance. It was believed to be the mountain where the Japanese Imperial Army General Tomoyuki Yamashita sought refuge during the war.
Its name, derived from the Ifugao word “pulaw”, which means “white” which perfectly describes the sea of clouds that surround the top of the mountain. The trails—Hungduan and Hapao—are both very challenging with Hungduan being the more common jump off point among hikers.
Visiting Banaue requires a lot of logistical planning and coordination if you want to make the most out of your visit especially with some areas being incredibly challenging to reach. Banaue isn’t a highly recognized destination around the world for nothing.
Its rice terraces will not be declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites only because of the picturesque views it offers to the spectators, but because of the historical significance it holds, the culture it represents, and the timeless heritage its story is reflective of.
Banaue is also home to the Cordillera mountain ranges, an equally important refuge during the Second World War.
It will also not be worth every dime if you won’t have an experience of a lifetime. So, if you’re a culture geek, travel through the native Ifugao villages and get to know the locals, most of whom have knowledge passed down from generations before them.
Learn how they preserve their heritage firsthand and bask in the rich knowledge about their artifacts, designs, traditions, tribal wear, wooden carvings, and folk tales.
For those who are thirsty for some active adventures, you won’t run out of treks and hikes to do as the rice terraces themselves are nestled within forests and mountains. And because Banaue is high land, there is a handful of other mountains to hike.
Lastly, with the perfect play of nature in Banaue, you won’t have to worry about relaxing and reconnecting with the world. It’s the best place to detox from the highs and lows of life; the hustle and bustle of the city.
To say that the journey is long, and might be rough when you decide to go to Banaue may be true.
But, as with all journey that brings immense joy and memorable experiences, the difficulties consist of hour-long treks, half-day road trips, and slippery mountain slopes are all well worth it in the end. You’re on top of the world, after all.
Banaue is close to other great tourist destinations such as Sagada and Baguio. Check out Baguio tours and activities that you can add to your bucket list during your trip in the Northern Philippines .

From the Boondocks
Our town: asipulo, ifugao.
The town’s elevation ranges from 450 to 1,935 meters above sea level. For those interested in guerrilla stories like me, you might find it interesting that one of the mountains in Asipulo, Mt. Situ, used to be the hideout of World War II guerrillas. The mountain is named after one of the guerrilla camps — Camp 2 or C-2.

I would like to visit this place. This is a great place to learn and revisit the heroics of our WWII Guerilla Heroes. Great info!
Hi Kayni, And its near Kiangan too where they have that WWII Memorial in the site where Yamashita surrendered.
Do they grow coffee there?
yes we actually grow coffee in asipulo in the natural way, estimate area of coffee plantation is about 500 hectares which produces about 200tons every year. the Hojap Multi – Purpose Coop in the locality also processes coffee and market it as ground coffee blend, 40%arabica and 60%robusta. Asipulo coffee is guaranteed organic as it is naturally grown without external inputs.
Been to this place and it feels so relaxing. The touch of nature expressed in the calmness of the municipality and the hospitaliy of the people is what makes me feel like going back to Asipulo… and someday I will!

The beauty of ifugao’s tourist attractions.
Ifugao is a province located in the Cordillera Administrative Region on Luzon Island in the Philippines . It is known for its lush green mountains , stunning rice terraces, and rich cultural heritage. Tourists who visit Ifugao will experience breathtaking scenery, local cuisine, and traditional customs that have been preserved over centuries.
The Significance of Ifugao’s Rice Terraces
Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ifugao. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases thousands of rice terraces carved into the mountains by hand more than 2,000 years ago.
The terraces are not only a symbol of hard work but also an engineering marvel as they were built without any modern technology or machinery.
Batad Rice Terraces is another popular destination for tourists. Unlike Banaue Rice Terraces which can be seen from afar, Batad’s rice terraces can only be reached by foot or motorbike. The effort to reach Batad makes it all the more rewarding when visitors finally see its beauty up close.
Waterfalls and Hiking Trails
Tappiya Falls is located near Batad and offers a refreshing break from hiking through rice fields. The falls drop into a shallow pool where visitors can take a dip to cool off before continuing their trek or simply relax and enjoy the view.
Hapao Rice Terraces has its own hiking trail where visitors will pass through beautiful scenery including small waterfalls as they make their way to natural hot springs. This unique experience allows visitors to rest and rejuvenate after exploring other tourist attractions in Ifugao.
Cultural Immersion Activities
If you want to immerse yourself in Ifugao’s culture, homestays in Batad and Banaue villages are a great option. Here, visitors have the opportunity to learn about traditional customs and practices, taste local cuisine like pinikpikan (chicken dish), and interact with locals who are eager to share their way of life.
Overall, Ifugao is a hidden gem that showcases the beauty of nature and the richness of Filipino culture . It is a destination that should not be missed by travelers who seek adventure and want to experience something truly unique.
Banaue Rice Terraces: The Eighth Wonder of the World
When it comes to stunning tourist attractions, the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao is one of the top must-visit destinations . These terraces are known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” and for good reason.
The history and significance of these terraces date back more than 2,000 years ago when they were created by ancestors of the Ifugao people. The Banaue Rice Terraces are not just a beautiful sight to behold; they also represent a unique agricultural system that has been passed down from generation to generation.
The Ifugao people consider themselves to be stewards of these terraces and have maintained traditional farming methods that involve planting and harvesting rice manually. Visitors can witness this time-honored tradition by participating in cultural immersion activities such as rice planting, harvesting, and even basket weaving.
If you’re looking for the best viewpoints for stunning photos of the Banaue Rice Terraces , there are several options to choose from. One popular viewpoint is at Batad Village, where you can get a stunning panoramic view of the rice terraces from a high vantage point.
Another option is at Hapao Village, where you can take a scenic hike up to an observation deck overlooking rice terraces that stretch as far as your eyes can see. When visiting Banaue Rice Terraces , make sure to take advantage of all cultural immersion activities available including joining village tours with locals who will share their way-of-life with you while enjoying breathtaking views.
Visiting Banaue Rice Terraces is not just about admiring its beauty but also about experiencing an ancient culture that has stood strong over time. From learning about traditional farming methods to getting involved in local cultural activities, visitors will leave with newfound appreciation for this world-renowned destination.
Tappiya Falls: A Hidden Gem in Ifugao’s Mountains
If you’re looking for a refreshing natural beauty spot in Ifugao, then Tappiya Falls should definitely be on your list. Located in the little village of Batad, this waterfall is a must-visit if you want to experience the beauty of nature while enjoying some physical activity.
Location and Accessibility of the Falls
Tappiya Falls is situated about 30 minutes away from the Batad Village on foot. The hike leading to the falls itself is an adventure. You will trek through mountain paths and rice paddies – make sure you wear comfortable shoes or hiking boots!
But don’t fret if this seems overwhelming – hiring a local guide or porter can make your trip much easier. Getting to Batad Village, where Tappiya Falls is located, can be quite challenging for first-time visitors.
The best way to get here is by taking a jeepney from Banaue town proper – it takes around two hours to get there. But trust us, once you reach Batad, it’s all worth it!
Features and Beauty of the Falls
The waterfall itself stands at around 70 meters tall and cascades down into a small pool surrounded by lush greenery. The sight of Tappiya Falls alone is breathtaking enough to make your journey worth it! You can take some amazing photos here that are sure to impress your friends back home.
The water in Tappiya Falls has a beautiful turquoise color that’s so inviting during hot summer days. Take a dip in the cool waters or sit on one of the large rocks nearby while admiring its stunning beauty.
Trekking and Swimming Activities at Tappiya Falls
The hike to Tappiya Falls is an adventure in itself. The trek takes you through narrow paths, rice paddies, and steep steps carved into the mountain slopes.
But don’t worry, it’s doable even for beginners if you take it slow and steady. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s a natural rock slide along the waterfall that you can slide down into the pool below.
It’s not for the faint of heart – but it’s definitely thrilling! Swimming in the cool waters of Tappiya Falls is a must-do activity while you’re here.
Make sure to bring some extra clothes so that you can change into something dry after your swim. The best time to visit Tappiya Falls is during the summer months when weather conditions are favorable.
But even if you come during the rainy season, the waterfall is still worth visiting as its waters become more powerful and majestic at this time.
Batad Rice Terraces
If you thought the Banaue Rice Terraces were impressive, wait until you see the Batad Rice Terraces. These terraces are smaller in scale than their Banaue counterparts, but they more than makeup for it with their unique features and stunning beauty. Located in the town of Batad, these rice terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination when exploring Ifugao.
Comparison with Banaue Rice Terraces
While the Banaue Rice Terraces are certainly impressive, they tend to attract larger crowds of tourists. The Batad Rice Terraces offer a more intimate experience, as they are less visited by tourists. Additionally, while both terraced landscapes feature an intricate irrigation system carved into their hillsides that provide water to the rice paddies, the Batad terraces follow a more circular design.
Unique features of Batad Rice Terraces
One of the most unique features of the Batad Rice Terraces is their amphitheater-like design. This is due to how each terrace was created in concentric circles around a central point at the bottom. Some say this was done to protect them from landslides and erosion caused by harsh weather conditions that often happen in Ifugao.
Another unique feature is that you can hike down one side of these terraced rice fields and up another side to get back home. The standard route goes through small paths encircling each level before arriving at its base where there’s a beautiful waterfall right next to it called Tappiya Falls.
Homestay experience in Batad Village
For an authentic cultural immersion experience in Ifugao make sure you stay at one of many homestays found throughout Batad village during your visit here. Homestays provide travelers with an opportunity to live like a local and learn about the traditional lifestyle of the Ifugao people.
Homestay families offer comfortable accommodations, delicious home-cooked meals, cultural performances, and activities such as rice planting and weaving demonstrations. The Batad Rice Terraces is a stunning destination that should not be missed on your trip to Ifugao.
With its unique terraced design, tranquil environment, waterfall views, and cultural immersion experiences in the nearby village. It’s a perfect place for those who want to explore beyond just the usual tourist destinations in Ifugao.
Hapao Rice Terraces
If you’re looking for a more secluded escape in Ifugao, the Hapao Rice Terraces are the perfect destination. These terraces are less well-known than their famous Banaue and Batad counterparts but offer stunning views and a deeper cultural experience.
Unlike other rice terraces in Ifugao, the Hapao Rice Terraces have a unique shape reminiscent of amphitheaters. This is because they were built on a natural slope at the base of Mt. Amuyao, which provides an impressive backdrop for photos.
One of the best ways to explore these terraces is by going on a hike along one of its many trails. There are several paths to choose from depending on your fitness level and how much time you have available.
The most popular trail leads to a natural hot spring where you can take a refreshing dip after your trek. Another must-see activity in Hapao is watching traditional weaving demonstrations by locals.
The people of Ifugao have been weaving textiles for centuries using backstrap looms made from bamboo and rattan. You can witness this intricate process firsthand and purchase some beautiful souvenirs to take home with you.
If you want to experience an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Ifugao, be sure to visit the Hapao Rice Terraces. It offers not only stunning views but also hiking opportunities and cultural immersion that make it an unforgettable destination worth exploring!
Ifugao is truly a hidden gem in the Philippines , offering a unique cultural and natural experience for travelers. The rice terraces of Banaue, Batad, and Hapao are among the most stunning landscapes in the world and represent the ingenuity and hard work of Ifugao ancestors. The Tappiya Falls, located in Batad village, offers a refreshing break from the heat with its crystal-clear waters cascading down from high cliffs.
Travelers can interact with locals who continue to cultivate rice using traditional methods. Weaving demonstrations provide insights into how intricate designs are created for traditional clothing.
The people of Ifugao are welcoming and warm towards visitors. They are eager to share their stories and beliefs with outsiders making visits more memorable.
It’s worth taking a trip to Ifugao to explore its tourist attractions while taking advantage of opportunities to learn more about its people’s culture. A few days or even weeks exploring this region will leave visitors feeling more connected to nature while experiencing a culture that remains true to its roots despite modernization pressures.

Must Visit Tourist Spots in Banuae Ifugao, Philippines
If there is one place I would recommend anyone to visit in the north of the Philippines, it would be Banaue. With its culture and tradition, it is impossible not to be amazed and fall in love with the place; especially when you are surrounded by the Banaue Rice Terraces, which are considered a Unesco World Heritage Site.
On our second visit to Banaue, we wanted to make sure we stayed longer and visit as many places as possible. We were very excited because we really missed the place and we had some good memories of our first visit.
Manila – Banaue – Sagada V.V. by BUS?
When going to Banaue, expect long hours of a bus ride. You are talking about 8 hours of travel. If you are going to Sagada, it’s even longer. But what’s nice is that you can relax and catch up on your sleep while on the bus. One bus company I know that travels to these places is the CODA LINES.
Hiwang Native Village
There are so many places to stay in Banaue. But upon searching, we ended up staying at Hiwang Native VIllage . The native village is located a few minutes away from the main town. But it didn’t really bother us because the view from Hiwang will leave everyone speechless!
We stayed in a native Ifugao hut overlooking the rice terraces. It was peaceful and cold. We loved this place! The huts are also quite far from each other, so you have your own privacy as well with a CR and shower for your exclusive use a few steps away from the hut.
We stayed in one of the topmost huts which provided a stunning view, but expect a climb and many steps! But the steps are all laid out in a naturally landscaped garden which makes many steps a pleasant journey.

Banaue Ifugao Tourist Destinations
For 3 days two nights. We really wanted to maximize our itinerary. We arrived early morning in Banaue; literally, it was around 5 am. It was still dark and cold. I loved it! We asked Hiwang Native Village to organize a pick-up van for us at the Tourist Center. That’s where the bus stops too.
If you haven’t arranged a pick-up, do not worry because there are so many tricycles readily available. We immediately rented a van to take us to some places around Banaue organized by the Hiwang Native Village and coordinated by the Banaue Tourism Center.
Banaue Rice Terraces View Deck Areas
There are 3 viewing deck areas that your tour guide will bring you. I totally forgot some of them.
My apologies for that but some of them appear on our Php 20 and 1000 banknotes. But these places are great to get a nice glimpse of the Rice Terraces. You will also find many souvenir shops here, so no worries about bringing pasalubong to your friends or family.
Things to see around Hungduan Ifugao
After visiting the viewpoints around Banaue, we then headed to Hungduan Ifugao. It’s approximately a 20 min ride from the main town. Once you get there, you have to register at the Tourist Information and Assistance Center.
Environmental Fee: Php 70.00
Hapao Rice Terraces
After your registration, you will then go to the drop-off point where a local guide will be allocated to your group and accompany you on your hike along the terraces.
The hike takes you from the viewpoint along the walls of the terraces to the Hapao Hot Spring. It was so much fun but do be aware to walk cautiously as the walls are narrow and the drop quite high. It was beautiful, especially seeing them all lush and green with newly planted rice.
Bogya / Hapao Hot Spring
One of the main tourist spots here, aside from the rice terraces, is the hot spring. It is located next to a river with freezing water. I am not sure where the volcano is, but you could really smell the sulfur in the water. It was relaxing! After the hot swim, we went to the main river to call off and back to the hot spring again. It’s like a hot and cold bath!
Hungduan Heritage Village
After Bogya Hot Spring, we walked back to a Heritage village where the local people live. It was nice because the people were very friendly and some even speak English very well. It was special and an interesting trek back to our van!
Banaue Hotel
After an uneventful short trip back from the Hapao Rice Terraces, we headed back to the town proper and decided to walk a few meters towards Banaue Hotel for an appetizing meal while overlooking rice terraces. I find it very romantic, especially with the view. After a pleasant meal, we took a tricycle towards our resort.
Batad Rice Terraces
On the next day, we woke up early and went to visit Batad Rice Terraces. You will have to travel from the town proper for at least an hour to get to Batad. You can take a Jeepney, but it may take a while. So it’s better to hire a vehicle to take you there. It’s best to coordinate with the Tourism Center.
When we arrived at the Batad Rice Terraces, we were so amazed at how beautiful it is. I couldn’t believe it myself that everything is man-made. There are so many restaurants offering a nice view of the rice terraces. So slow down and take some time to absorb everything. It’s quite overwhelming, actually! The hike along the terrace walls here is even more challenging for those with a fear of heights as the drop is higher than the terraces at Hapao, but it is all part of the adventure!
Tappiya Falls
What’s more interesting in Batad Rice Terraces is the Tappiya Falls. With your local tour guide, you will actually be walking along the rice terraces going to the falls. That was exciting because walking around. You can get a different view of the terraces. Just prepare yourself for a long walk because going to the falls could be challenging for some. Make sure you have water with you, and pause if you need to – especially on the long climb back to the terraces.
After a few minutes of walking, we finally caught a glimpse of the falls. It was amazing! And after the long walk, I couldn’t think of anything but to have a dip in the freezing water. Yes, the water was really cold, but it was refreshing! It’s worth it! I think this is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you could find in the Philippines.
Other tourist spots to visit Banaue
After having lunch in Batad, our tour guide took us to different rice terraces around Banaue, such as the Bayninag Rice Terraces, Bangaan Village Rice Terraces, and the Ducligan Snake River. All of these places can be seen from the road above.
What I like about these terraces was how each one is actually different from the other. It was also interesting to find villages in the middle of the terraces. The farthest was the Ducligan Snake River, where the river goes around in the shape of a snake. But for me, this is more of a lifeline providing water to the terraces and other crops around the area.
Bayninag Rice Terraces | Bangan Rice Terraces |
Ducligan snake river .
Bronzesmith at Barangay Bokos
On our last day, we checked out early and decided to stay in the town proper. Based on the tourist map, there is bronzesmith around the area. I was really intrigued, so I asked my friends to take a walk to the bronzesmith and maybe buy some souvenires.
With Google Walk and asking local people, we ended up at the home of one of the bronze smiths and, because of their hospitality, had a unique experience. When we arrived at the house, we couldn’t find any bronzesmith and this lady came out of the house, her name is Elsa. We told her that we were looking for the Bronzesmith, and she said, yes, this is the place, but her husband, who was doing it, was taking a break because he was not feeling well.
She was so sweet because she said that she still has stocks that she could sell, and she even showed us how they make it. They were so accommodating that they even invited us inside their home and had a chat. They even let us tried their homemade Basi (Rice wine), and that was delicious!
Before we left, they even gave us Banaue Rice that came from their terraces. They were so hospitable, and it made our trip to Banaue even more memorable! Sometimes, aside from the destination, it’s the people of the community that makes a trip, a trip to remember!
Banaue definitely has a special place in our hearts. It makes you slow down from the fast-paced life in the Metro, and I like that. The place is beautiful, the people and the culture are amazing, and it’s the experience that is difficult to let go of! Banaue, Ifugao is definitely a place to visit and a place to be protected! In the first place, it’s a National Heritage, and I am very proud of that!
