Pools, recreation, and activities

Art of Animation resort has 3 pools. The feature pool, called “The Big Blue Pool,” is the single largest pool at Walt Disney World. It’s Finding Nemo themed, and be sure to listen carefully if you go underwater – you just might hear from your favorite Nemo characters! This area also has a Schoolyard Sprayground with some jets and fun water features. There is a Nemo-themed playground nearby as well.

In the Cars area you’ll find the Cozy Cone pool, and over by the Little Mermaid rooms you can make use of the Flippin’ Fins pool.

Righteous Reef playground – a small, fun playground area by the Finding Nemo Big Blue Pool with slides, climbing, and more.

Jogging trail – walk or jog using the loop around Hourglass Lake for a 1.38 mile trail. Be sure to keep a look out for the fun facts posted about The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo, and The Little Mermaid!

Things to do at Art of Animation resort:

Poolside activities – offered daily, these may include things like trivia, games, pool parties, and more!

Pixel Play Arcade  – inside the main Animation Hall building you’ll find an arcade with classic and new video games to play.

Campfire Activities – head to a campfire by Pride Rock happening most nights. Bring your own s’mores ingredients or purchase a s’mores making kit there.

Movies Under the Stars  – almost every evening a different Disney movie is shown on a large screen by the Big Blue pool. An activity schedule is provided at the resort to let you know what movies will be playing and what other activities may be happening.

Transportation options from Art of Animation

There are two main forms of Disney included transportation at Art of Animation– the Disney buses or the Skyliner gondolas. Buses go to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom regularly throughout the day. The Skyliner runs continuously to Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Buses also run to Hollywood Studios and Epcot on a reduced schedule (usually once per hour).

Is Art of Animation a good resort?

Everyone’s definition of “good” is different, and I’ll get into who I think Disney’s Art of Animation resort is best for in the section below. However, I think Art of Animation is a really good resort overall for a number of reasons: a major one being that it is an official, on property Disney resort. That means it has extra benefits non-Disney hotels won’t have, like early entry, and transportation constantly running to and from the theme parks. That’s a big one – many off-site resorts advertise free shuttles but they only run once or twice a day. Art of Animation has buses and/or the Skyliner running to all 4 parks continuously. It has fun Disney themeing, it’s bright and colorful, and very kid-friendly.

Art of Animation - Disney in your Day

Who is Art of Animation best for?

In general I recommend Disney’s Art of Animation resort for a few different kinds of people:

  • Those with younger kids (or big kids/adults!) who really love Disney characters and will be in awe of the themeing
  • Families who might want the family suite option
  • People on a budget who don’t necessarily want the cheapest option, but aren’t looking to spend deluxe level money

There are two things which make Art of Animation stand out against most other Disney resorts – the theme and the family suites. It is the most Disney out of any of the resorts, and if you and/or your kids love Disney movies, it’s beautiful and immersive. It kind of feels like you are still in the theme parks both walking around the resort and even back in your room! I really love all of the details they included here.

It also has the family suite option, which sleeps up to 6 people. This is huge for those who won’t fit in a standard 4 person room! The suites have the advantage of a separate bedroom and two bathrooms so you’ll have more space. Even for families of 4 who may have older kids and want a little more space, or groups of 3-4 adult friends will love the extra space you have here.

If you’re looking to save money Art of Animation can be a good option for larger families. The suites often qualify for discounts and promos, so you may even be able to save after booking. The standard rooms are the most expensive out of the standard value resorts, so unless you really love the themeing and the Little Mermaid you might want to look at Pop Century if you’re on a budget, or a moderate resort for a small amount more.

Compared to other Disney resorts

In terms of the other value resorts, Art of Animation is definitely a standout. It edges out the All-Star resorts of a number of reasons – the Disney themes, it has the skyliner access, and it doesn’t share its bus transportation with any other resorts. Since it is walkable to Pop Century and has access to those perks as well, like the food court, that also provides more value. It is very “Disney” and it’s done well. The price is slightly higher than the other value resorts, but this may be worth it for many. Compared to a standard room at Pop Century, Art of Animation is more expensive. The main reasons why someone might want to stay in a standard room at Art of Animation is if they are really big Little Mermaid fans, or they don’t like the set-up at Pop Century with the murphy bed (Art of Animation still has the standard 2 bed setup to sleep up to 4).

Compared to the moderate and deluxe resorts, Disney’s Art of Animation resort doesn’t have near the amount of amenities those other resorts have. Just a few of the differences include bigger rooms, access to pools with hot tubs, slides, and more activities, more restaurants and bars on location, (sometimes) better transportation options, and more nuanced themeing. However, the prices are also higher compared to Art of Animation.

If you’re looking at a time period where a standard room at Art of Animation costs around $225/night, expect the All Star resorts to be around $170/night and the standard rooms at Pop Century near $200/night. To compare, a moderate like Caribbean Beach may sit around $300/night, while deluxe resorts range from $420-700/night (for more affordable deluxe resorts like Old Key West up to the super popular ones such as the Contemporary). Family suites typically are around $400/night.

Best room numbers to request

Keep in mind that the type of room you book will affect where you are located in the resort. The standard rooms are all in The Little Mermaid section, which is the furthest from the main building. The Finding Nemo suites are closest and as a result they have the highest prices. When you book your room you can make all sorts of requests, including which floor you’d prefer to be on, what sort of view you might like, if you want to be near the elevators, etc. These requests are not guaranteed but Disney will do their best to honor them if possible.

A few suggestions:

  • If you are booked in a standard room, request building 7 to be closest to the main hall.
  • If you want it to be as quiet as possible, request a high floor and non-pool view facing.
  • The Finding Nemo suites (preferred suites) are closest to the Skyliner and the main building. You can indicate during online check-in if you want to be near the Skyliner or main building.
  • If you have several preferences, note which one is most important: a ground floor lake view room in the Lion King section may not have many options and may not be accommodated, but if you note that being on the ground floor is more important than the view or the building then that request will be more likely to be met.
  • If you are traveling in a group and want connecting rooms, make that your #1 priority.
  • Keep in mind that all requests are just that – requests. Nothing is guaranteed (unless it’s something like a preferred room that you paid more for).

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Rooms: 2022 Guide

Disclosure: This Art of Animation rooms page contains affiliate links. Read  full Disclosure Policy .

We’ve come to have the same general expectations out of the rooms at a value Disney resort – two queen beds or one king, living and sleeping space in one, split bathroom area with a door for the toilet and shower and a privacy curtain separating it from the rest of the room. You might have a murphy bed or a bit of hanging space, but for the most part it’s a standard hotel type situation.

One of the things of Disney’s Art of Animation that sets it apart from the other value resorts is the rooms.

Disney's Art of animation resort sign

While one section of the resort does have that standard value style room, the rest follow a model Disney calls family suites .

Originally at Disney’s All-Star Music resort, family suites provide extra space for those travelling with kids or a larger group, but at a more affordable price than some of the deluxe resorts or villas.

Now, that doesn’t make these rooms cheap, but it does cut the cost in half compared to a one-bedroom suite at a deluxe resort. You are also giving up some of the amenities of the deluxe resorts, and the rooms reflect that.

However, if you’re travelling with kids or not spending a ton of time in the rooms, Art of Animation is a perfect fit!

Standard Rooms at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

If you know the history of Disney’s Art of Animation, you know that originally was supposed to be the second section of Disney’s Pop Century Resort across the lake. However, with the attacks on September 11, the tourism industry in Florida took a hit. As a result, the project stalled out, leaving the partially completed buildings sitting there like a ghost town.

Little Mermaid sign outside Disney's Art of Animation resort

Around a decade later, after the success of the family suites at All-Star Music, Disney decided to revisit this area and convert it into a new resort – Disney’s Art of Animation.

However, since a section of the resort had already been built in the same value-room style over at Pop Century , rather than gut those buildings and begin again they keep a block of standard rooms. These rooms make up the Little Mermaid area over at Art of Animation.

Standard Room Amenities

Much like Pop Century , the buildings of rooms at Art of Animation have a T- shape, with the flat part of the T facing in towards one another. These rooms also have the exterior hallway seen at other Disney resorts, rather than entering a building and then coming to the door of your room. Because of this, the decoration on the outside of the buildings is a bit different, and again is similar to the Pop Century and All-Star buildings.

The Little Mermaid area has its own pool, the Flippin’ Fins pool, with a larger-than-life Ariel and all her friends surrounding the space. You feel like another fish or sea creature, splashing around and having fun under the sea! Some of the rooms do face the pool, with others facing the courtyards or parking lots. Unlike other resorts, Art of Animation does not have the choice of pool or preferred rooms when booking. If you want to request a particular room location, you will need to call 407-934-7639.

In the rooms themselves, you’ll find the following:

  • Internet – Free WiFi Service
  • Coffee Maker
  • Telephone with voicemail
  • In-Room Safe
  • Iron & Ironing Board
  • Mini-refrigerator

These amenities are standard for Disney’s value resorts, providing easy conveniences for the morning in terms of making a quick meal or coffee to get you out the door. You can also store items in the safe you don’t want to leave out or unattended – I know I’ve left my wedding rings off and in the safe while at a water park.

Again, in a value room at a value resort, you’re going to get what you pay for. However, that doesn’t mean you’re sacrificing comfort or quality.

Art of Animation Standard Rooms Layout

In the Little Mermaid standard rooms, you have the option between one king bed or two queen beds, sleeping a maximum of four adults. If you’re travelling as a single or a couple, I always recommend going with the king bed option. You get more living space and more bed space, so where’s the downside? Also in the living area you have a small table and chair set, your dresser with flat-screen TV, and a multi-peg hanging space (usually in the shape of a helpful octopus!).

We’re staying at Art of Animation, got the Little Mermaid room pic.twitter.com/b9XDGJiK91 — Nick (@Nick_HBS) June 7, 2021

In the bathroom, you’ll see the typical split-bath setup. The sink and vanity are in one area, separated from the beds by a privacy curtain. The bathroom mirror has plenty of light, and an attached backlit makeup mirror if needed. This is also where you’ll find the hairdryer should you need it, along with some small drawer space for your toiletries. Through the bathroom door you’ll find the shower and bathtub combo, as well as the toilet.

Fitting with the style of the rooms at Art of Animation, every aspect of the space fits with the Little Mermaid theme. The walls and floor have a beautiful blue tone to mimic the sea, while the other decorations incorporate seashells and marine life. A coral motif surrounds the bathroom mirror, and the furniture in the room has a vintage look as though they were found by Ariel in a shipwreck. Ariel herself is on the shower curtain, before revealing her grotto on the shower walls. If you have mermaid-lovers in your group, you might want to consider these rooms!

Art of Animation Family Suites

Outside the hotel area of Art of Animation resort room

The remaining three sections of rooms at Disney’s Art of Animation all use the family suite model. This type of room allows for a maximum of six adults all in one space, while providing living spaces that are more distinctive and additional bathroom space. Disney found success with these suites for families with younger children, or even older kids that need a bit more room. Additionally, the incredible theming of each area brings a beloved Disney film to life, perfect for your little Mousketeers.

Family Suite Amenities

All the rooms in the Art of Animation family suite blocks have the same basic amenities:

  • Kitchenette

You’ll notice that they are similar to the amenities in the standard rooms, with the addition of a microwave and a kitchenette. At the same time, don’t underestimate what that extra sink and microwave can do for you. A microwave means that you can heat up quick meals in your room, leading to a hot breakfast or quick lunch. You can even bring leftovers back from a previous table service meal, and eat those! That is such a money saver, one that I personally have used, and it also cuts down on food waste.

Layout of the Art of Animation Family Suite Rooms

Even though the décor is different in each section, the layout of the family suites follows the same basic floor plan. When you walk in, there is a small eat-at table with chairs, which converts into another bed in the evening. Since it is a murphy bed, there are two bedside cubbies with chargers that you can use, or you can utilize them for extra storage.

Dining area in Art of Animation resort room

To the right is the first of two full bathrooms with a separate sink and bathing area. This has a shower and tub combination, which is great for families with young kids. Both entrances to this bathroom have pocket doors, which helps save space and prevents your kiddos from whacking one another with the door.

Bathroom area in Art of Animation resort room

Connected to the eating area and the bathroom is the living room, where you’ll find the kitchenette along with your sofa (which unfolds into a queen bed) as well as a TV. Other touches, like chairs and end tables, vary from section to section based on the décor. You also have a hanging space with drawers in the living room, so if this is where one or two people are sleeping they can unpack their things.

Kitchen area in Art of Animation resort room

Finally, is the bedroom and attached second full bath. The bedroom has the only official bed in the suite, which is queen-sized, as well as its own TV and dresser. You also have a hanging area for clothes, although there isn’t a full closet. Connected to the bedroom is the bathroom, which replicates the decorative style of the first bath. However, instead of a shower and tub combo, you have a walk-in shower. The sink and shower are also all in one space here rather than separated, although the vanity is larger than in the first bathroom.

Bed at Cars suite at Art of Animation resort

Lion King Family Suites

What really sets the suites apart from one another is the decoration. Again, the rooms at Art of Animation bring you into the world of the movie. Therefore, in the Lion King section, every aspect of the room is a rich color, using jungle and savanna plants along with your favorite characters. The showers both have gorgeous sunrise murals, an homage to the opening scene of the film, with Timon and Pumbaa on the shower curtain in the first bathroom.

Much of the furniture has a beautiful zebra wood quality, a neutral but fun contrast to the brighter elements of the room. When you fold down the table bed, Simba sleeps peacefully in a jungle hammock, watching over your little ones while they rest. The dresser tops look like leafy green foliage, and the headboard of the bed features a moment from the iconic song, I Just Can’t Wait to be King .

In the courtyard outside the rooms, statues of your favorite characters stand majestically on Pride Rock or skulk amongst the Elephant Graveyard. The Elephant Graveyard is also a play area, with tunnels and areas for your kids to run around. This is the only section without a pool, but the Big Blue Pool in the Nemo section is only a short walk away.

Check out this video to see a full walkthrough of the Lion King family suites!

Cars Family Suites

Cars Family Suites at Art of Animation resort

Over in the Cars section, you walk right into Radiator Springs to meet Lightening McQueen, Mator, and all their friends. Since the family suite buildings have internal hallways, the outside of the building has a flat canvas where the beauties of the Arizona landscape come to life. In the town, you’ll find places like Sarge’s Surplus Hut, Fillmore’s Organic Fuel, Luigi’s Casa della Tires, and even the Wheel Well Motel. In the center, the Cozy Cone Motel serves as the pool area, complete with cone-shaped cabanas where you can lounge in peace.

art of animation tour 2022

Speaking of cone-shaped, cones take on a central theme in the room itself. These rooms have interesting combination of car-themed amenities and nods to the three Cars films. The floor and furniture go with the idea of a car garage, while the bathrooms have a car-wash theme. The idea in these spaces is that you have become a car in this world, and so you would appreciate these components.

Cars themed room at Art of Animation resort

On the top of the nightstands and dressers, you might see postcards from Lightening and Mator as they travel around the country and to the World Grand Prix from the second film. Mator also is your sleeping companion in the table bed, snoozing under his towing and salvage sign. Don’t forget to look for artwork of your favorite Cars characters on the walls!

Finding Nemo Family Suites

Finding Nemo artwork at family suites for Art of Animation resort

The last of the Art of Animation rooms are the Finding Nemo family suites, which are the most expensive of the three sections. This is largely because of their central location within the resort and the proximity to the Big Blue Pool, which is the largest pool at Walt Disney World. If you were looking for some sort of preferred option, this would be your best bet.

Big Blue Pool at Art of Animation

From an amenity standpoint, the Finding Nemo space has the most to offer your kids. Not only is there an amazing zero-entry pool with fun sea creatures, but also at the one end of the pool complex is the Nemo splash zone. Your littles can stomp, splash, and play in the water and sprayers in this area without being overwhelmed by bigger kids in the pool. On the other end of the complex is Squirt’s Righteous Reef, an interactive playground perfect for an afternoon activity or your non-swimmers.

Art of Animation Righteous Reef image

Finding Nemo Room Décor

These are actually the most subtle of the Art of Animation rooms, taking on a calmer atmosphere than the other two sections. Beautiful cool cools of blue and purple decorate the space, with pops of orange and other bright tones here and there. While you definitely see characters in the artwork, they don’t dominate the room. Predominately, the decorative features are ocean elements like coral and seaweed, although these take on more colorful hues than their real life counterparts.

In the bathroom, you shift into the submarine from the first movie, so it takes on more gray tones with some of the military components. No surprise, in the bathroom you find Bruce and his shark buddies – but remember, fish are friends, not food! Both bathrooms follow this theme, which is like the other suites.

Dozing above the table bed you’ll find Marling and Nemo, cozy in their sea anemone home. All the hard furniture, including the outside of the table bed, has a pretty blue background with coral and stylized versions of the characters in the foreground. Again, this makes you feel like you have become a fish yourself, swimming around in Nemo’s home.

Take a look at this video to get the full Finding Nemo experience!

Which of the Art of Animation Rooms to Choose?

This is always the question – how do I know which of the rooms is right for me? At Disney’s Art of Animation, deciding between rooms boils down to three basic questions.

1 – Am I Travelling with Kids?

If this is a solid yes , we recommend the family suites, unless your kids are little or dying to stay in the Little Mermaid rooms. Growing up, if my parents could have had the ability to get their own room, give my sister and me our own beds, and had a bathroom all to themselves , I’m willing to bet they would have done it.

Family suites, with their incredible decoration, also bring that each bit of magic that kids love. They will only be into this sort of thing for a period of time, so take advantage of it while you can.

2 – How Much Time am I Spending in the Room?

One of the times I recommend a value resort is when you know you aren’t going to be in the room a lot. Whether that’s because you’re going to be out at the pool, shopping and dining in Disney Springs, or going hard at the parks, there’s no reason to spend big bucks on a nice room that you’re primarily using to sleep. Again, the family suites are still the better option if you have kids, but if you’re just going as a couple cut your cost in half and book the standard rooms.

3 – What is My Budget?

Normally I would put this higher on the list, but at Art of Animation, the previous two points rank higher in terms of rooms. However, you don’t want to forget this piece. Even with children, you might find that the family suites are a bit out of budget. We get it – they can get up to $500 a night, which is hefty for a value resort. If that’s the case, go with the standard room and bunk your kids in the same bed. Again, you can only put four people in a standard room, so that might make your decision for you. On the other hand, if you’re trying to save money and everyone is down to share a bed, the standard rooms are the way to go.

What about Theming?

The obvious question in this instance is whether or not it matters which movie you get to “inhabit.” If yes, then let that help make your decision. If no, use these other factors to help narrow down your choice. At the same time, I get it – your daughter is obsessed with Simba, so staying in the Finding Nemo section is not going to work for you. Think about your family and their preferences, use our tips , and you won’t go wrong.

Exceptional theming, particularly Cars and Lion King areas

Skyliner connection to Hollywood Studios and EPCOT

Best pool of the Value resorts

Family Suites are innovatively designed and themed

Interior hallways in some buildings

Walking trail around Hour Glass Lake and connecting bridge to Pop Century

Just one bus stop

Most expensive Value resort

Terrible in-room mobile reception

The number of made-to-order meals available at the food court can mean long waits in line

The resort's standard rooms are rarely discounted

Poor soundproofing

Art of Animation was perfect for us in the Nemo Suites for 6.

February 4, 2020

As a family of six on a moderate budget, Art of Animation was our choice for a larger room. The Skyliner made travel to EPCOT and the Studios easy. And the bus ride to animal Kingdom was short, but the ride to Magic Kingdom could sometimes seem long.

We found Art of Animation's food court much nicer than Pop Century. AoA's was less busy, cleaner, and provided more dining options.

August 10, 2019

We booked a Little Mermaid standard room. It is woefully due for a renovation. We normally stay at Pop Century and have been spoiled by their revamp.

March 16, 2019

The bus service was great to AOA, and we could always hop on a Pop Century bus and walk across the bridge if needed. Resort was clean and very fun for our young children.

We enjoyed Art of Animation, and for the cost (one of the cheapest resorts but still on Disney property), we would totally stay there again

February 3, 2019

Slightly larger than comparable rooms at other Value resorts, standard rooms are around 277 square feet. All of these rooms are in the Little Mermaid section of the resort.

  • Dresser with drawers
  • Full-length mirror
  • Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi)
  • Flat-panel TV
  • Coffee maker and starter supply of coffee pods
  • Ironing board and iron
  • Digital thermostat
  • In-room safe
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and bar soap

A curtain divider separates the main sleeping area from sink/bathroom area, and a solid door separates the toilet and shower from these. This allows up to three groups to get ready at the same time.

The suites are a reasonably priced option which include two rooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchenette If you have a family of five or six, or if you just don't want to sleep in the same room as your kids, the Art of Animation family suites are one of the best lodging options at Walt Disney World.

  • Room with Queen Bed(s) and en-suite bathroom
  • Double-Size Sleeper Sofa
  • Double-Size Table Bed (table with 4 chairs that converts to a full-size bed)
  • Separate Bedroom with Door
  • Open clothes hanger bar
  • Starter supply of disposable kitchenware: paper plates, bowls, and cups; plastic forks, knives, and spoons

Family Suites at Art of Animation have two bathrooms. One is small and functional, nearly identical to the bathrooms in the standard rooms. The main bathroom is spacious, with a large glass-door shower.

There is no full-service restaurant at any Disney value resort, including Art of Animation. The food court, Landscape of Flavors, is organized like a food court at a mall.

Landscape of Flavors Landscape of Flavors offers made to order burgers, sandwiches, and pastas. You'll find an occasional upscale (for a food court) item here, like saffron seafood pasta, a tandoori chicken sandwich on naan, or the "surf and surf" (crab cake and fried shrimp) burger.

The Drop Off Pool Bar The pool bar at the Art of Animation Resort, The Drop Off sits next to the main Big Blue Pool. Despite the existence of some snacks and small bites this is mostly a place for drinks. Like all Disney bars the tropical-themed drinks are very sweet, but they are refreshing on a hot Florida day by the pool.

Ink and Paint Candy, snacks, and drinks.

Art of Animation In Room Delivery

Refillable Mugs Allows guest self-service soft drink refills from quick-service locations in hotels ( NOT in theme parks ) for $21.99 for the length of stay.

Located just off the Animation Hall lobby is the Pixel Play Arcade , which has a decent collection of relatively recent video and arcade games. Most games cost $0.50 to $2.00 per play.

Practical Matters

Check-in is 3:00pm Check-out is 11:00am

All Disney resorts participate in Disney’s Online Check-In program. If you’ve checked-in online and provided a mobile phone number or email address, you will receive your room number electronically. Then you can go straight to the room and use your smart phone or MagicBand to open the door, skipping the lobby altogether.

These rubber and plastic wrist bands can function as your room key, park admission, charge card, and more! MagicBands cost money, but if you'd like a free option you can use the official Disney World app on your phone or request an RFID-embedded card at the front desk.

Park tickets are best purchased online in advance either directly through Disney or via our Least Expensive Ticket Calculator . However, if you arrive without park tickets, head to the concierge desk in the hotel lobby.

Dining reservation are best made online in advance or on your phone or tablet during your visit. You can also use our Disney World Reservation Finder .

Washers and dryers are availabile in laundry facilities at each Disney World hotel. Cost is $3 per wash, and another $3 per dry cycle. A small selection of soap, fabric softener, and dryer sheets are also sold, for around $1 each. Only credit/debit cards can be used for payment. For more information, see our Disney World Laundry Facilities page.

If you lose something in a theme park or during your stay at a Disney-operated hotel, visit Disney's Lost and Found website or call (407) 824-4245.

Disney hotels have gifts shops near their lobbies with a decent collection of Disney-branded souvenirs. You will also find basic pharmacy items such as sunscreen, aspirin, allergy and cold medicine, baby diapers and formula, shampoo, and the like. Resort hotels with Deluxe Villa rooms offer an assortment of groceries, as well.

Disney recommends a third party company, Kid's Nite Out , to provide babysitting services at the resort hotels. See our Disney World Child Care page for more information.

Art of Animation is located in the Wide World of Sports Resort Area. All modern GPS apps, and Google Maps, will have clear driving directions to it. As a backup, look for Disney road signs directing you toward the Wide World of Sports once you're on property, and then look for signs for Art of Animation once you're close.

Disney Skyliner gondola system has a station on the bridge in between Pop Century and Art of Animation. From the station, the ride to Epcot's International Gateway entrance is about 20 minutes while the ride to Hollywood Studios is about 12 minutes (plus waiting time in line).

Disney provides free bus service from Art of Animation to the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, and Disney Springs. Art of Animation's bus stops sit along the front wall of the Animation Hall lobby. Buses run about every 20 minutes, but varies through the day.

If you have your own car, it's faster to drive yourself to Disney's Animal Kingdom, the Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach water parks, and Disney Springs. Disney's transportation system is faster to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

You can walk between the Art of Animation and Pop Century. The Skyliner can take you to the EPCOT resorts, Caribbean Beach, and the Riviera. For all other resort destinations, the fastest option is an Uber, Lyft, or taxi. Disney's bus service is free but slow, and will probably require you to use an intermediate destination like Disney Springs, to get to your destination. And that can take a couple of hours each way if you're unluckly.

if you have a car, the easiest way to get to Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, and other tourist destinations is to drive. Alternatively, Mears Transportation operates shuttle services between the Disney hotels and other theme parks.

The Resorts Gal Guide to Disney’s Art of Animation Pools (2024)

We’ve stayed at Disney’s Art of Animation many times. It’s a fun hotel, especially for children and those who remain young at heart. That fun extends to the resort pools, where you can choose between themed areas to enjoy during your vacation.

During our last stay, we spent some time at the pools at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. Art of Animation has three pools for resort guests: The Big Blue Pool, the Cozy Cone Pool, and the Flippin’ Fins Pool. You might relax by the Flippin’ Fins pool, take a plunge in The Big Blue Pool, or hang out in a cabana at the Cozy Cone Pool. Each has charming elements.

When we stay at a resort at Walt Disney World, we take photos of everything, including the pools. Below, we’ll preview the pools and what you can expect. Additionally, we’ll discuss the Schoolyard Sprayground, Squirt’s Righteous Reef, the Drop-Off Pool Bar, changing areas, and other things you’ll need to know to plan some time at the pool.

Pool Details for Planning Your Vacation

During our latest stay at Art of Animation, the pools were open the following hours:

  • The Big Blue Pool–10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
  • Flippin’ Fins Pool–10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
  • Cozy Cone Pool–10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

*After Labor Day, the pool hours usually run between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Please note that pool hours adjust from time to time throughout the year. So you’ll want to check the hours during your visit. They are posted at the main entrance to each pool.

Posted pool hours at Disney's Art of Animation

Before we look at each pool in detail, I wanted to mention that complimentary towels are provided in bins at each pool. This is standard at every pool at the Walt Disney World Resort. So you won’t need to pack them.

Since Disney’s Art of Animation is a value resort , the pools do not have a waterslide or hot tub. We have a separate list of Disney Hotels that have a waterslide . However, the resort has other recreational offerings geared toward children, which we’ll discuss further below.

The Big Blue Pool Photos

The Big Blue Pool is the feature pool at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Hotel. It contains over 308,000 gallons of water and is inspired by Disney’s Finding Nemo film.

The pool sits directly behind Animation Hall, the resort’s lobby. It is centered between the Finding Nemo section of the resort and the Disney Skyliner. A zero-depth entry area is available on one end of the pool.

Zero Depth Entry Pool

A few pool rules are posted, including the maximum pool depth, which is 4′ 11″ (4 feet, 11 inches). (This is the maximum pool depth at all Art of Animation pools.)

Complimentary life jackets are available at the Big Blue Pool and other pools. Lifeguards are also on duty at all of Art of Animation’s pools.

Per Disney, pool lifts and other access options are available for guests with disabilities or limited mobility. Pool hours and lifeguard availability vary by pool and are subject to change.

The Schoolyard Sprayground (Art of Animation Splash Pad)

Directly behind the pool, the Schoolyard Sprayground is an aquatic play area designed for children. This area features characters from Finding Nemo .

Disney's Art of Animation Splash Pad with Finding Nemo elements

It looks like tons of fun for children. Before your trip, you might want to watch some of the movies represented at the resort. For reference, those movies are Finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid, Cars, and The Lion King .

Unfortunately, The Lion King section of the resort does not offer a pool. However, it is within close proximity of The Big Blue Pool and Flippin’ Fins Pool. Here are a few more photos of the splash pad at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.

Squirt’s Righteous Reef Playground

Directly behind the Schoolyard Sprayground, Squirt’s Righteous Reef is one of the two playgrounds at Art of Animation. This play area is outside of the fenced pool area. So you don’t have to worry about children getting wet.

Squirt’s Righteous Reef is an excellent place for children to run off extra energy. According to the sign, it’s designed as a play area for children ages 5-12. Like everything else at the resort, this play area is designed with children in mind. The slide is not intimidating, and the playground has rubber flooring.

Other Recreation at The Big Blue Pool

While at The Big Blue Pool area, you might notice a few other daily activities. The resorts post a recreation calendar each month if you want to preview the entire schedule.

Other things include a kiosk that offers hair braiding, airbrush tattoos, and Henna. These items all have an additional fee. A laundry facility is available in each of the pool areas. Unfortunately, the family suites do not have washers and dryers.

Inside the pool restrooms, you’ll find two shower stalls where you can easily change or shower. A few lockers are also available. Body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are available in the shower area. This area is convenient for those who have a late flight on their check-out day. You could spend the day at the pool, shower, and freshen up before you leave.

The Drop-Off Pool Bar

The Drop-Off pool bar is immediately opposite The Big Blue Pool’s main entrance. They offer Disney’s standard cocktail and beverage menu, snacks, and sandwiches. You can preview the Drop-Off’s menu with prices on Disney.com .

However, if you want to enjoy a meal at the pool, you’ll do better to mobile order something from the resort’s food court, Landscape of Flavors . They will have a better variety, and when your order is ready, you can pick it up and bring it back to the pool.

If you have a Rapid Fill mug, a soda refill fountain is available on the far right side of the Drop-Off pool bar. So don’t forget to bring your mug to the pool.

The Cars Section at Art of Animation is home to the Cozy Cone Pool. This area is designed to look like the entrance to the Cozy Cone Motel. You’ll walk through what appears to be the lobby entrance.

Lastly, The Lion King section of the resort doesn’t have a pool. However, it does have a children’s play area. This playground is between the main lobby and The Little Mermaid section of the resort.

The Resorts Gal Spin on Art of Animation’s Pools

Overall, the three pools at Disney’s Art of Animation are equally fantastic! You’ll have fun regardless of your choice, or visit all three throughout your vacation!

You’ll also want to remember that while The Big Blue Pool is the largest, it is often the most crowded. After that, the Flippin’ Fins pool is also reasonably busy. Over my visits, I have found the Cozy Cone Pool to be the least crowded, and you can usually find an open cabana if you’re looking for shade.

Your kids will likely love the pools at Disney’s Art of Animation and the hotel. Don’t be surprised if they want to spend more time at the pool than in the theme parks!

Top Titles From Portugal at Annecy, from Milestones to Stunning 2D and a Vibrant New Generation With Attitude and High Art

Augur

As ever more Portuguese directors plan their first animated feature, Annecy is staging a timely Tribute to Portuguese Animation, its 2024 Country of Honor, with a seven section spread of key titles.

Variety  has made its own selection of that selection, profiling modern milestones such as Abi Feijo’s “The Outlaws” and José Miguel Ribeiro’s “The Suspect” and taking in Regina Pessoa’s “Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days,” the dazzling 2D of BAP, Zagreb Animafest winner “The Garbage Man” and Oscar-nominated ‘Ice Merchants.”

Related Stories

Summer movie meltdown math: years of box office data reveal discouraging trends, laura linney, justin kurzel, ben semanoff to direct jason bateman & jude law's netflix series 'black rabbit', popular on variety.

Some highlights:

“Ice Merchants,”  (João Gonzalez, 2022)

Portugal’s first ever Oscar nominee, in any category. Every day a father and son parachute from a rickety house suspended by pulleys above the vertigo-inducing abyss of an icy cliff in order to sell ice to a village thousands of feet below. Painterly in palette, with a great sound design and superbly scored by Gonzalez, an edge-of-the-seat thriller whose real triumph is its heartrending tale of loss and the saving grace of family love. Produced by Bruno Caetano at Coletivo Audiovisual (COLA), the Royal College of Art and Michaël Proença at Wildstream.

“The Outlaws,”  (Abi Feijó, 1993)

If modern Portuguese animation lifts off, it is most probably with Feijó’s “The Outlaws,” a Special Jury Award winner at 1994’s Cartoon d’Or. A fully developed narrative – a Feijó hallmark – brooding orchestral score and flickering black and white drawing on paper compose a film noir of large political point about Portugal and Spain’s own 1940s crime world. Here that means Portugal’s illicit part in the slaughter of Republic renegades caught hiding in border mountains after defeat in the Civil War. A bracing modern classic.

Serrazina’s first short and another early modern title which helped put Portugal on the international map, proving a major hit abroad after screening in competition at Cannes in 1996. The tale of a cat enchanted by an ever elusive moon is drawn in inspired black and white with sharp light, dark shadows and swirling figures, the tale capped by a dreams-can-come-true ending. Produced by Abi Feijó’s Filmógrafo.

“The Suspect,”  (“A Suspeita,” José Miguel Ribeiro, 1999)

Another modern milestone in Portuguese animation. Four figures share a train compartment on a slow trip through picturesque hills. But “Train Killer” is on the loose, one occupant reads in his newspaper, and he fears he’s one of the occupants. A stop-motion comedy sluiced with Hitchcockian suspense and humor which won a 2000 Cartoon d’Or and made the reputation of Ribeiro, one of Portuguese animation’s modern – and most stylistically eclectic – greats. Ahead, his love affair with Africa, expressed in travel memoir “A Journey to Cape Verde” (2010), an island road movie of self discovery, and Angola-set Annecy animated feature hit “Nayola” (2022).

“Tragic Story With Happy Ending,”  (Regina Pessoa, 2005)

A Crystal Award winner at Annecy, going on to become the most multi-prized film in Portuguese history. Pessoa used photocopies with images scratched into India ink on glossy paper to create this short’s aesthetic. It’s a story of acceptance, by oneself and one’s community, as we track a girl with a heartbeat too loud for everyone. Believing she has the heart of a bird, she longs to take flight as the individual she truly is. The middle child of Pessoa’s trilogy on childhood which began with “A noite” and was completed by the Christopher Plummer-narrated “Kali the Little Vampire.”

“Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days,”  (Regina Pessoa, 2018)

A 2019 Annecy Jury Award winner, and the crowning triumph – to date – for Pessoa, creator of this year’s Annecy poster, the godmother of MIFA campus and Masterclass speaker as part of the Portuguese Animation Country of Honor. Exacting in its style – adding stop motion to her traditional 2D and a sense of engraving – “Uncle Thomas,” is, however, initially personal in inspiration, a tribute to Pessoa’s own uncle who suffered some form of OCD but nevertheless lit in her love of drawing. A deeply moving homage.

“Augur,”  (David Doutel, Vasco Sá, 2018)

“The Garbage Man,”  (Laura Gonçalves, 2022)

A 2022 Zagreb Animafest top prize winner, taking one of the most coveted prizes on the international animation scene. A family gathers around an enormous table, eat and drink and remember the figure of Uncle Manel Botão. Forced by poverty to emigrate to Paris, he would collect almost new trash for his family in Portugal: a set of crystal glasses, lamps, a bicycle, even a hand-held electric scythe. Animated in shimmering 2D, this is a homage to a man, but very much more a celebration of collectivity, from the portrait of Botão, with multiple family members adding shared memories, to the rambunctious band beginning and ending the short to the very way the film was made, invoking many of Portugal’s good and great animators in multiple labors. Produced by Bando À Parte, with the support of BAP Animation Studios.

“Tie,”  (“Elo,” Alexandra Ramires (Xá), 2020)

A 2020 Chicago Gold Hugo winner for best animated short, Tie” takes place under a gloomy sun and in high grass where a dog collapses and dies. A boy with a minute body literally bumps into a man with a minute head. They join forces, or bodies. Driven by surreal logic, a parable of survival and adaptation drawn with pencil on paper, the film marks yet another title from collaborators at Portugal’s Bando À Parte art pic powerhouse, six of whom – Ramires, Doutel, Sá, Mihajlovic, Gonçalves, Rocha, –  direct titles in this selection.

“O Melhor da Rua,”  (Artur Correia,” 1966)

Annecy’s 1967 Advertising Film Award laureate, Portugal’s first win at the festival. Running a mere 30 seconds this Schweppes ad is as follows – a bar owner entices his customers with a giant sign reading Town Bar. The rival establishment, opposite, renames their joint Europe Bar. So, the former puts World Bar, the rival puts Universe Bar, then all its customers flee to the original bar, winning with the unbeatable Bar Schweppes sign. Correia, born in 1932, had studied graphics at Castro in the 1950s and balanced his career between comics, animation and advertising.

“Purpleboy,”  (Alexandre Siquiera, 2019)

A Grand Prize winner at Brussels’ 2020 Anima Festival, among a slew of prizes, a fantasy gender identity adventure. Grain  grows in his parents garden, wants to be a boy becoming a brave aviator like his father. Born in the body of a girl, he suffers persecution. A tragic event proves his salvation. Sluiced by magic realism and endowed with far larger narrative than most titles in this selection, made by Bando À Parte in association with Rainbow Productions, Ambiances, and Luna Blue Film.

“Almost Forgotten,”  (“Quase Me Lembro,” Miguel Lima, Dimitri Mihajlovic, 2023)

“Antonio María’s Nightmare,”  (Joaquim Guerreiro, 1923)

Guerreiro’s pioneering spirit brought to life Portugal’s first animated short, released on Jan. 25, 1923. This two-minute film, since lost, caricatured then Prime Minister António Maria da Silva. Guerreiro also immortalized the short in a comic strip for Tiro Ao Alvo. The late 1990s saw the rediscovery of the original 150 drawings in a second-hand bookstore, allowing for a 2001 reconstruction, complete with a new soundtrack by António Victorino d’Almeida. The short sees the prime minister have a nightmare where Portugal’s proletariat are fulfilling their Bolshevik dream.

“Because This Is My Craft,”  (Paulo Monteiro, 2018)

A homage made by first-person voiceover dedicated by Monteiro to his father who dazzled him as a child, he recalls, with his stories of his travels by plane and ship, exploits as a hockey and volleyball player, and anecdotes of sperm whaling in a small rowing boat with fishermen of the Azores’ Faial Island. As the narrator speaks, his child’s imagination recreates the scenes he once imagined with precise pencil-drawn black and white line animation infused by quaint fantasy. The film won best Portuguese short at the 2019 Monstra – Lisbon Film Festival.

“Between the Shadows,”  (Alice Guimarães, Monica Santos, 2018)

A bored bank clerk whose clients pawn their hearts meets a tall dark stranger, who begs her help. Directed by Guimarães (“Amelia & Duarte”) and Mónica Santos (“The Pink Jacket”), a feminist fantasy film noir mixing real-life actors, stop-motion and a surreal big city background which scored a 2018 Cesar nomination in France and proved a fest favourite. From Portugal’s Animais, Um Minuto and France’s Vivamente Lundi!

“Birds,”  (Filipe Abranches, 2009)

In a surreal world a birdlike wizened lady tends to her caged birds, prepping a chicken stew, all soundtracked with chirps and a fitting dissonant soundtrack. Perhaps director Abranches has his parents to thank for buying “small bags filled with comics at the beach’s kiosk.” providing a steady supply of visual fodder to call upon. He has managed to balance animation, teaching, and comics, founding Umbra the independent Portuguese comic publisher.

“Cold Soup,”  (“Sopa Fria,” Marta Monteiro, 2023)

A 2024 Quirinos best animation design winner, in which a women remembers years of domestic abuse, tellingly drawn as just an outline in her memories as she recounts how at first she thought the failure of her marriage was just her fault. As scenes roll, drawn in kitsch greens and pinks, and years roll by, “when he lost his job, he was so stressed he would hit me,” she recounts. And background colors change to black or she imagines herself shut up in a glass cubicle. A pained and painful story.

A 2017 breakthrough from the close circle of animators at Bando À Parte and now BAP Animation Studio. Here, the contents of a higgeldy-piggedly row of 42 wooden drawers gain life sparking abstract animation and short shards of memory, such as of a small boy peddling down a long corridor at a hellbent pace. The wood of the drawers is so well drawn you can almost smell it. Best experimental short at Lisbon’s 2018 Animation Monstra Festival.

“Fado Do Homen Crescido,”  (Pedro Brito, 2012)

The tension between the fanciful and the imaginative play out in a Lisbon tavern as a man sits in a state of reminiscence. We rattle through fragments of his memory from a childhood spent within the city. The joy of his footballing heroes in sticker albums, and the street kickabouts’ they inspired, are set against the backdrop of crime taking place alongside the day to day of clothes hanging to dry. Its 2D animation is colored bright with shades of pastel red used throughout.

“Fragments,”  (José Miguel Ribeiro, 2016)

Winner of Locarno’s Leopard of Tomorrow in 2016. In the pulsing arteries of an urban Portugal, amidst the excitement of the Euros semi final, Mario reconnects with his estranged father, who recounts a haunting war story. The narrative intertwines past and present, exploring generational anger and trauma. “You were an introverted child. You didn’t speak much…I spoke too much it seems” the father admits to Mario. Directed by Ribeiro, this 2D, stop-motion, and live-action mix shows the techniques and talent he’d take on to his Annecy competition title, the feature “Nayola.”

“A Mind Sang,”  (“A Mãe De Sangue,” Vier Nev, 2019)

A piece of virtuouso filmmaking from Nev, who mostly works on VR projects, which won Vimeo Staff Pick Award at 2020’s Annecy. The tour-de-force animation presents images that can be seen two ways, telling a story of couples kissing, coupling and the blood and violence of birth. Meanwhile, am outlined hand is also a man, a face contains two hands, there is a screen of faces or foetuses, two faces compose together the body of a woman, and a foetus tipped upside down becomes a cat in a gothic garden scape. Drawn in broad black and white strokes with a striking use of red for fire and blood accompanied by a moody ‘50s psychological thriller orchestral score.

“Stuart,”  (Zepe (José Pedro Cavalheiro), 2006)
