What Sets Us Apart

About Aria Tours

Unique, exclusive, luxury travel for opera and the arts to the most spectacular destinations in the world.

We are not the only opera travel company out there, but we feel that we offer a unique approach that sets us apart from the competition. The creative approach to our tour design, the focus on themes such as architecture and literature, to augment the performance schedule, the generous inclusion of superb cuisine and wine, and the compassion and expertise of our Tour Directors make us the distinctive alternative for luxury opera travel—a leader in the field.

Inspired Itineraries

Our tour itineraries are inspired by our own excitement about the destinations and the performances, touring, accommodation and culinary opportunities… to be had there, but also by the desire to provide unique and memorable travel experiences. We approach each tour as though it is the “trip of a lifetime” for our clients. We design each itinerary to appeal equally to those who will be visiting a given destination for the first time and those who have been there many times.

Small Groups

Groups are small, limited in most cases to 16 members, assuring personal and attentive service and making for an intimate and memorable experience. Each member of our groups should feel special, that their travel needs and desires have been attended to with the utmost care, compassion, patience and professionalism.

Themed Focus

In addition to opera (as well as theatre, ballet, classical music and other performing arts), we often incorporate other themes into our itineraries in order to provide an even more interesting experience. Depending on the location, this focus may be architecture, painting and visual or decorative art, horticulture, history, literature, wine or even chocolate!

Expert Guides

Our guides are local and esteemed experts in their fields: art historians, musicologists, archaeologists, authors. They are carefully selected not only for their knowledge of each subject and location, but also for their ability to entertain and connect with the participants while imparting knowledge. Guiding is a performance, and it should be as scintillating as it is informative.

Superb Meals and Wine

We believe that partaking in the very best local cuisine and wine (or whatever the preferred local distillate may be) is an important part of the tour experience. We therefore spend a great deal of time researching restaurants, and have found what we think are the best in each city. This does not always mean the most expensive restaurant (though it may), but it always means a restaurant selected for exquisite, regional cuisine, ambience and gracious service. In many cases, these are “hidden gem” restaurants not frequented by tourists. On occasion, we dine in historic or Michelin-starred restaurants that are well known (and for good reason). In all cases, we have long-established relationships with the restaurant, which guarantees preferential service for our groups.

We do our wine research as well, both during our travels and also from home (but not excessive research, rest assured…). Wines at most meals will be pre-selected by Aria Tours, and will be what we think are the best examples of local varietals (where quality allows it—rarely a problem in Italy or France, for example).

We are very generous with menus and wines. Meals are usually 3-5 course affairs, depending on the time of day and portion size, and a choice for each course is usually offered. We cater to any and all dietary concerns.

Professional, Compassionate Tour Direction

Not only will we take care of any and all arrangements for your travel experience, we will be there to take care of you as well, every step of the way. Our Tour Directors are not only the best in the business, all with at least a dozen years experience, but they are all knowledgeable and professional while also being incredibly warm and friendly people, focused on attention to the client’s needs as a concierge at a 5-star hotel would be. They do not play the role of lecturer or caregiver to a class of schoolchildren—they are travelling companions who are confident and compassionate leaders, and they know the territory.

Best Seats in the House

Our seats for performances and events are always excellent. We think that seats between 6th and 15th row in the central orchestra section of most venues is ideal for opera. Where preferable, we may select boxes or front row grand tier, again, depending on the venue. Whether you join us for a tour that features performances at Bayreuth, La Scala, Glyndebourne or the Lyric Opera in Chicago, you will enjoy best seats in the house.

Tour Materials

We provide each tour member with a soft cover Guidebook that is a comprehensive compilation of tour information, usually numbering over one hundred pages. We include detailed daily itineraries with approximate timings, performance synopses (courtesy of our relationship with Grove Music), background information on the cities and sites that we visit, and a “Before You Go” document that assists tour members in their tour preparation. We consistently receive glowing praise for the guidebooks, which are, from all reports, without parallel in the travel industry.

We were impressed by the efficient transport arrangements, the excellent seats at each of the performances, and the first-class hotel accommodation (often walking distance from the opera house). But most of all, we realized that the primary goal of HAT Tours was that we should get maximum enjoyment from our tour. This meant their constant attention to those details that make the difference between a “by the-number” tour and really memorable experience, like getting premium tickets to Anna Netrebko’s Violetta in Vienna (to the detriment of their budget). We look forward to our next trip with Hat Tours, which is already confirmed for 2012. (Central Europe 2009, India 2010, Northern Italy 2010, Germany and Austria 2011, Southern Italy 2012).

  • brianfU5634KN 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Very Enjoyable Evening! The opera is conducted in a charming, old building which is in itself worthy of a visit. The opera performers - both the opera singers as well as the instrumentalists accompanying them - were fantastic. The singers were very talented, and presented a powerful performance. The selections of music from operas was well chosen. Although I enjoy going to an opera occasionally, I'm more of a "classic rock" enthusiast, but I have to say I found this opera performance mesmorising and extremely enjoyable. If I visit Rome again, I would look forward to going to this concert again. Read more Written December 5, 2019

Music, Opera & Ballet tours

From the Nationaltheater Munich  to  Drottningholm's 18th-century Court Theatre , our music, opera and ballet tours offer access to the world’s greatest venues, pre-existing festivals and musical programmes. We plan meticulously so that you can relax and enjoy our trademark experience of top-category seats, the companionship of fellow music-lovers and lectures from leaders in their field. We offer a range of musical experiences, from the intimate chamber music and Lieder of a Schubertiade , to spectacular opera in Verona   and  Glyndebourne , and the world's finest soloists and orchestras in Lucerne .

On a grander scale, Martin Randall Festivals feature world-class performers in the finest and most historically apt venues. The cornerstone of every festival is the union of music and place, in glorious destinations such as Salzburg , Lincoln and Sicily ,  and in the form of journeys – along the Rhine Valley, or through central Germany in the footsteps of J.S. Bach.  They are organised and operated solely by MRT and are exclusive to our clients. Although numbers are much larger than on small-group tours – from 100 to 250 people – the principles of care, detail and intimacy, far from being diluted, are simply applied on a grander scale.

Finally, our  Chamber Music Breaks in the UK  offer the opportunity to hear – up-close – chamber music performed by leading ensembles and solo artists, all the while staying in comfort at famous and well-run hotels.

Curtis on Tour in Nantucket

Curtis in Nantucket, the island’s highly anticipated annual week of classical music, begins July 15, 2024.

Extraordinary alumni and faculty from the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music perform audience favorites – from Schubert’s beloved song “The Shepherd on the Rock” and a breathtaking aria from Mozart’s opera The Shepherd King  to pieces by legendary Curtis alumni Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber, and Nantucket’s own Ned Rorem. Don’t miss these thrilling performances by the next generation of leading artists – soprano  Sophia Hunt , clarinetist  Sara Han , and pianist  Ying Li  – performing alongside Curtis President and violist  Roberto Díaz .

  • July 16, 2024
  • St. Paul's Church

Brazilian-American soprano Sophia Hunt’s performances have been praised as “trenchant” and “vocally skilled” (Opera News), “exceptionally strong both vocally and dramatically” (Parterre Box), and “vibrant and musically intelligent” (Broad Street Review). Ms. Hunt is a current member of the Dutch National Opera Studio. She is from Brooklyn, NY, and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she most recently held the Rubenstein Fellowship and worked with Carol Vaness. Ms. Hunt was the top prize winner in the 2023 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition and the 2023 Orpheus Vocal Competition, and a national semifinalist in the 2022 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

This season, Ms. Hunt sings Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte), the Soprano (The Four-Note Opera), Nella (Gianni Schicchi), and Suor Dolcina (Suor Angelica), as well as covers Violetta (La traviata), with Dutch National Opera. Her past roles include Don Giovanni (Donna Anna and Donna Elvira), Così fan tutte (Fiordiligi), La clemenza di Tito (Vitellia), and Rene Orth’s Empty the House (Faith). In 2022, she was a studio artist with Wolf Trap Opera, where she sang Susannah (Mrs. Gleaton) and covered La traviata (Violetta).

Ms. Hunt is passionate about concert and recital work, and has recently sung with Opera Philadelphia, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the City Choir of Washington, Curtis on Tour in Greece, the Main Line Symphony Orchestra, and the Art Song Preservation Society of New York. She was a recipient of grants from the Winston Classical Voice Scholarship and the Pittsburgh Foundation, and a prize winner in the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition, the Dorothy Lincoln Smith Competition in Classical Voice, and the International Collegiate Singing Championship, among others. Ms. Hunt was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and has participated in the Joyce DiDonato master classes at Carnegie Hall, Houston Grand Opera’s YAVA, and SongFest.

From Seoul, South Korea, Ms. Han is an active clarinetist and performer across stages around the world. Sara is currently a DaCamera Young Artist based in Houston, TX, where she performs chamber music and engages with communities across the city. Additionally, she is an active orchestral performer, having recently performed with The Florida Orchestra, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, and the Houston Ballet Orchestra. Ms. Han recently completed her Master’s Degree at the Rice University Shepherd School of Music. Prior to her time at Rice, she completed her undergraduate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, during which she served as acting principal clarinetist of the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra and a member of Symphony in C. Ms. Han attended the Music Academy of the West in the summer of 2019 and was named winner of the Keston MAX Audition. She also attended the New York String Orchestra Seminar, Aspen Music Festival and School, and the National Youth Orchestra of the USA. Ms. Han was a winner of the 2018 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, has been featured on the NPR radio show From the Top, and has appeared as soloist with the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and the Seoul Romance Orchestra. Ms. Han has also previously attended The Juilliard School and the Interlochen Arts Academy. Ms. Han is thankful for the guidance of Richie Hawley, Anthony McGill, and Emil Khudyev.

A violist of international reputation, Roberto Díaz is president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, following in the footsteps of renowned soloist/directors such as Josef Hofmann, Efrem Zimbalist, and Rudolf Serkin. As a teacher of viola at Curtis and former principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. Díaz has already had a significant impact on American musical life and continues to do so in his dual roles as performer and educator.

As a soloist, Mr. Díaz collaborates with leading conductors of our time on stages throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia.  He has also worked directly with important 20th- and 21st-century composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki—whose viola concerto he has performed many times with the composer on the podium and whose double concerto he premiered in the United States—as well as Edison Denisov, Jennifer Higdon, Ricardo Lorenz, and Roberto Sierra. His recording of Jennifer Higdon’s Viola Concerto won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2018.

As a frequent recitalist, Mr. Díaz enjoys collaborating with young pianists, bringing a fresh approach to the repertoire and providing invaluable opportunities to artists at the beginnings of their careers. In addition to performing with major string quartets and pianists in chamber music series and festivals worldwide, Mr. Díaz has toured Europe, Asia, and the Americas as a member of the Díaz Trio with violinist Andrés Cárdenes and cellist Andrés Díaz. The Díaz Trio has recorded for the Artek and Dorian labels.

Mr. Díaz’s recordings on the Naxos label with pianist Robert Koenig include the complete works for viola and piano by Henri Vieuxtemps and a Grammy-nominated disc of viola transcriptions by William Primrose. Also on Naxos are Brahms sonatas with pianist Jeremy Denk and Jonathan Leshnoff’s Double Concerto with violinist Charles Wetherbee and the Iris Chamber Orchestra led by Michael Stern. Mr. Díaz’s live performance of Jacob Druckman’s Viola Concerto with Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Philadelphia Orchestra is available on New World Records. He has also recorded the Walton Viola Concerto with William Boughton and the New Haven Symphony for Nimbus Records, and works for viola and orchestra by Peter Lieberson with Scott Yoo and the Odense Symphony Orchestra and for Bridge Records.

Since founding Curtis on Tour in 2007, Mr. Díaz has taken this successful initiative to North and South America, Europe, and Asia, performing chamber music side-by-side with Curtis students and other faculty and alumni of the school. His tenure as president of Curtis has also seen the construction of a significant new building which doubled the size of the school’s campus; the introduction of a classical guitar department and new conducting and string quartet programs; and the launch of Curtis Summerfest, summer courses open to the public. In the fall of 2013 Curtis became the first classical music conservatory to offer free online classes through Coursera.

Also under Mr. Díaz’s leadership, Curtis has developed lasting collaborations with other music and arts institutions in Philadelphia and throughout the world and established a dynamic social entrepreneurship curriculum, supported by a prestigious Advancement Grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Designed to develop the entrepreneurial and advocacy skills of young musicians, this curriculum includes the project-based Community Artist Program (CAP) and the post-graduate Community Artist Fellowship program, which gives recent Curtis graduates the opportunity to dedicate a year of arts-based service to the community.

Mr. Díaz received an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College and was awarded an honorary membership by the National Board of the American Viola Society. In 2013 he became a member of the prestigious American Philosophical Society founded by Benjamin Franklin. As a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, he was selected by then-music director Christoph Eschenbach to receive the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, given annually to “the member of the Philadelphia Orchestra who has shown ability and enterprise of such character as to enhance the standards and the reputation of the Philadelphia Orchestra.” He received a bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Burton Fine; and a diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music, where his teacher was his predecessor at the Philadelphia Orchestra, Joseph de Pasquale. Mr. Díaz also holds a degree in industrial design.

King Charles Steps Out in London for Longtime Hobby After Resuming Public Duties amid Cancer News

The King reconnected with Sir Antonio Pappano, who helmed the Coronation Orchestra last year

King Charles is having a night out in London.

The King, 75, stepped out at the Royal Opera House on Thursday, May 16, to attend a special gala performance organized in tribute to Sir Antonio Pappano, the opera house’s outgoing music director. Pappano conducted the Coronation Orchestra at the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey in May 2023, and Thursday night's tribute saluted his 22-year tenure as music director of the Royal Opera House.

The evening of entertainment featured performances by opera artists and musicians Aigul Akhmetshina, Jonas Kaufmann, Sir Bryn Terfel (who performed at the Coronation Concert in Windsor last year), the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. The artists brought to life "much-loved arias and music from Sir Antonio’s repertoire at the Royal Opera House," a statement said.

When the special show came to a close, King Charles joined Pappano on stage and met some of the performers.

Pappano became a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the latest New Year Honours list for conducting the Coronation Orchestra, and it was significant for the King to be at the Gala performance held in his honor.

King Charles recently resumed public-facing duties while receiving cancer treatment , a diagnosis that Buckingham Palace announced on Feb. 5. The monarch has spoken several times about his health during his outings since, telling a patient at the Macmillan Cancer Centre at the University College Hospital London on April 30 (his first work outing since the announcement of the diagnosis), "It’s always a bit of shock when they tell you," according to Rebecca English of the Daily Mail .

During his ceremonial handover of the honorary colonelcy of the Army Air Corps to Prince William on May 13, King Charles mentioned experiencing a "loss of taste" during his treatment in a conversation with British Army veteran Aaron Mapplebeck, The Sun reported.

When the palace announced the monarch’s return to forward-facing duties on April 26, a spokesperson described his treatment as ongoing and shared a positive sentiment from his doctors.

"His Majesty’s treatment program will continue, but doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties. Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimize any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said .

King Charles is known to have a keen personal interest in the arts and was patron or president of over 20 performing arts organizations, including the Royal Opera, before his accession upon  Queen Elizabeth ’s death in September 2022.

"The King and Queen regularly attend theatre and opera performances and symphony concerts, sometimes as part of a fundraising event and sometimes in a private capacity," the royal family’s website says .

Amid the review of nearly 1,000 royal patronages and charity presidencies following Queen Elizabeth’s death and King Charles’ accession, it was confirmed that the King will retain his patronages of the Royal Opera House and The Royal Opera.

Sydney Eat Street: Vivid 2024

The lights are on, cameras are out but for foodies, Vivid-themed food offerings and events might just steal the show.

Jenifer Jagielski

Don't miss out on the headlines from NSW. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The lights are on, cameras are out, but for foodies, Vivid-themed food offerings and

events might just steal the show.

Sydney Opera House

When Vivid launched in 2009, the focus was on light installations, notably the light

painting; on both sides of the Opera House.

The festival has grown exponentially in size and breadth (Light, Music, Ideas, and Food), but the heart of Vivid is still the Opera House, not just on the sails and in concert halls but also from a food perspective.

Sydney Opera House and Opera Bar.

There will be special offers and activations throughout the precinct, but a

highlight is Aurorae at Bennelong Bar, where the floor-to-ceiling windows afford an

unobstructed view of the city and harbour bridge.

While you marvel at the kaleidoscope of colours, enjoy Peter Gilmore’s Vivid-inspired snack and cocktail for only $55. (Monday-Saturday, 5.30pm-11pm). For something more formal, a standout of the Vivid Food Program is A Culinary Canvas by Danielle Alvarez, a celebration of Australian food, wine, and music.

Over two nights (June 7 & 14), Alvarez – an internationally lauded chef and Sydney Opera House’s Culinary Director – has designed a three-course dinner that champions local and artisan producers alongside wines from female-owned Australian wineries. In between courses, guests will be treated to musical performances by Katie Noonan.

Vivid Fire Kitchen

Nights are getting colder, but things are heating up along The Goods Line, an urban

park and pathway in Ultimo, where the stage is set for the best barbecues in town.

Back for its second year, the Vivid Fire Kitchen is all about fire-related cooking –

smoke, charcoal, wood-fired or chargrilled.

Vivid Fire Kitchen.

There’s a collection of food trucks and pop-up restaurants, each with limited-edition fire-themed food such as Happy as Larry, Smoked Margherita pizza, Berliner Donuts, burnt chocolate orange Fire Jaffa donuts, and Starward Whisky’s hot toddy.

Grab a seat around one of the many firepits around the centre stage, watch local and international pitmasters and chefs, and prepare their signature fare while chefs share tips and cooking techniques.

The 45-minute demonstrations run from 6.30pm-11pm.

Chef Series

It sounds like a recipe for disaster – two high-profile chefs in one kitchen but, through a universal love of food, it can also produce something magical.

A part of Vivid’s Food Program, that scenario plays out in Vivid’s Chef Series, in which a renowned Sydney chef and an acclaimed international chef join forces and blend their different styles, cultures, backgrounds, and techniques to create bespoke dinners.

Chef Paul Farag.

The first event pairs Fred’s executive chef, Ben Greeno, with Max Coen of Michelin-starred Dorian Notting Hill.

At Aalia, executive chef Paul Farag, known for highlighting various Middle Eastern flavours, is joined by Ivan Brehm, chef/owner of Nour in Singapore (June 11 and 12).

The mesmerising light installations may get the glory, but that 8km Light Walk is

practically an illuminated trail of the city’s best dining districts - from the Sydney

Opera House through The Rocks, Walsh Bay, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour to

Chinatown and Darling Square.

From hatted restaurants to casual cafes, everyone is embracing the electrifying atmosphere, offering meal deals and Vivid-themed food and drinks.

Luna Lu dumplings. Picture: Jenifer Jagielski

Before starting the evening, grab a bite at Sydney Place behind Circular

It’d been renamed VividPlace Food trail for all its dining deals, including Hong

Kong beef fillet stir-fry with flat rice noodles ($19.80) at Bobo Dumpling Bar or a

complimentary glass of wine with fish or pasta special of the day and a $15 Vivid

cocktail at Bourke & Ward.

Dopy by Devon desserts.

For the picky eaters in your crew, head to Burger Point for burgers, steak, fried chicken combos and Halo Halo, a purple dessert drink with ube ice cream, leche flan, and shaved ice.

Keep the colour theme going with jewelled-toned dumplings at Luna Lu in The Rocks, then wind your way to Zephyr Sky Bar for vibrant cocktails, to Vivid Fire Kitchen, then a sweet Japanese treat at Dopa by Devon in Darling Square.

After all, with all that walking, you have to eat.

I Maccheroni Vivid dinner special.

Carriageworks

It may not be in the centre of the light show, but Carriageworks, the cultural precinct

in Eveleigh, refuses to be left out of the spotlight.

The venue’s main draw is VIVID’s Music line-up from (May 31-June 15) but, as with all things Vivid, there’s got to be food.

Coyoacan Social at Carriageworks.

So, before you take in the tunes, grab some Mexican street food from Coyoacán Social; a pop-up from Plate it Forward, a social enterprise that donates a meal through community kitchens for every taco purchased.

Another notable event of the Vivid Food Program is The Warakirri Dining Experience.
