For most people, cruising is a relaxing getaway with drinks by the pool, all-you-can-eat buffets, and late-night parties.

After a week of eating, drinking, and partying, it’s all too common to return from the cruise a few pounds heavier.

Thankfully, the cruise ships provide plenty of opportunities to stay active and work off the buffet. From the cruise ship gym to the sports deck, here’s what you need to know about working out at sea.

Do Cruise Ships Have Gyms?

Nearly every cruise ship has a gym as part of their fitness centers, and they are always free to use . The size of the fitness center and equipment offered vary by cruise ship, but the biggest cruise ships in the world have fully featured fitness centers with similar equipment that you’d find at gyms on land.

Cruise ship gyms typically offer cardio machines, free weights, and strength machines.

You can also take part in group fitness classes like spin classes, yoga, Pilates, or Zumba. The cost of the group classes varies by cruise line.

You’ll often find the sports and fitness center near the top deck of the vessel, located next to the spa facilities. One aspect I love about working out on a cruise ship is the floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic ocean views that I can see while on the cardio machines or between sets of an exercise.

While you will find a gym on most ocean-going cruise ships, some river ships and expedition ships don’t offer full gym facilities . The small cruise ships may only have a few pieces of equipment, if any.

Are Cruise Ship Gyms Free To Use?

Cruise ship gyms are free to use .

While the use of the fitness center is included in your cruise fare, some group workout classes may have an added fee.

What Equipment Will You Find at the Gym?

Cruise ship gyms typically have cardio machines, strength machines, free weights, floor mats, and group exercise areas.

The amount of equipment varies by ship. Generally, newer ships have better equipment. Larger ships have bigger fitness centers and more varied equipment.

Here’s some of the equipment we’ve found on cruise ships:

  • Smith machines
  • Exercise bikes
  • Rowing machines
  • Weight machines
  • Cable machines
  • Aerobic platforms

For safety, cruise ship gyms limit the weights of their dumbells , typically to 50 lbs, though I have seen 75 lbs dumbells on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady cruise ship.

Additionally, you won’t find strength racks, bench presses, or squat racks in most gyms . That’s because the rocking of the cruise ship can make you lose balance and cause injury. However, Royal Caribbeans Oasis and Quantum class cruise ships provide smith machines that are safer to use on the rocking ocean.

If cardio is more your style, you’ll find treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, rowing machines, and the occasional spin class.

Cruise Ships Offer Group Fitness Classes

Cruise ships offer various group fitness classes , including yoga, pilates, spinning, Zumba, TRX, etc.

Most group classes come at an additional cost of around $20 to $120 per class. Some cruise lines, like Virgin Voyages, offer complimentary fitness classes.

Many cruise lines also offer personal training services . The cost for a session generally runs from $80 to $115 for an hour-long session.

Are there Locker Rooms?

Cruise ship gyms usually have changing rooms. The option to change at the cruise ship gym is excellent if you don’t want to walk across the ship in your gym wear – though I doubt anyone would mind.

The changing areas are usually shared with the spa facilities.

Additionally, you’ll often have access to lockers, robes, towels, showers, and bathrooms. Some ships may have saunas in the changing rooms.

There’s always a scale in the gym if you want to track your progress. But, I’ve never felt the desire to weigh myself after a week of eating at the buffet.

Is the Cruise Ship Gym Open 24/7?

Unlike many gyms back home, the cruise ship gym isn’t 24-hour . Most cruise ship gyms open around 6:00 a.m. and close at 11:00 p.m.

Like everything else, the hours vary by cruise ship. Generally, cruise ship gyms open early in the morning and close late at night.

Unless you’re a night owl who likes to work out at 2 a.m., you shouldn’t have any problem squeezing in a workout.

When is the Best Time to Work Out?

If you want to work out during quiet time, it’s best to work out early in the morning, late at night, or during meal times.

Sea days are another great time to work out. If you plan on staying on the ship, the gym remains quiet until around 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., most people will begin making their way back to the boat, and the gym will be a bit busier as some guests try to get a workout in before dinner.

I’ve never found the gym on a cruise ship particularly busy. But, there is the odd time that I need to wait for a specific machine.

Other Workout Options

Not everyone wants to spend their vacation in the gym. Luckily, cruise ships provide plenty of options to stay active while sailing.

Running Tracks

Nearly every cruise ship has a running track, usually located on the top deck.

The running track usually circles much of the cruise ship and provides stunning ocean views.

Because the top-deck running track is shared with other passengers, you may find that other guests get in the way when running.

If you are serious about running uninterrupted, early morning, late evenings, or sea days are the best options.

Sports Courts

Most cruise ships have a sports court that includes basketball, soccer, mini-golf, and golf simulators.

The sports courts are free to use, and many ships offer ship-wide tournaments.

The sports court is a great place to get active, meet new people, and participate in some friendly competitions.

Dear Victoria, Great article. The problem I have is when gyms open later than 7am and getting your workout in, cool down, relaxing shower before breakfast closes at 10am. Most P&I cruise ships don’t open until 8am, absolutely hopeless. Not sure which cruise lines open earlier, I would imagine the US based cruise liners would. Just my personal gripe. Hey Stuart, I agree 100%. The gyms on most American cruise lines open around 7 am, which is perfect. But there are some that open later. I find I have the most motivation to work out in the morning. When the gym opens later than 7, I usually end up skipping it so that I don’t miss breakfast, and hoping I can fit in a workout later in the day.

Holland America Fitness Classes (With Menu and Prices)

Holland America’s range of onboard fitness classes makes keeping in shape on a cruise so easy. HAL offers both free and paid classes , along with complimentary fitness center access.

Staying in shape on a cruise doesn’t have to be hard, or take up too much of your vacation time! Whether you’re a diehard fitness enthusiast or just beginning to work out, Holland America offers fitness classes and independent exercise options for all levels.

Find out which of HAL’s fitness classes are included in the price of your cruise, which cost a little extra, and what other workout options are available on board.

Free group fitness classes

Holland America offers some free basic group fitness classes on each cruise, but days and times may vary on different sailings.

In recent years, the most common free fitness classes on HAL have included:

Most Holland America fitness classes do have an upcharge, but they offer a range of innovative options you might not have at your gym on land.

Not all classes may be held on all sailings, so check your daily planner for dates and times.

  • Pure-Form Pilates – 45 minutes, $20
  • Pure-Form Yoga – 45 minutes, $20
  • TRX Suspension Training – 45 minutes, $20
  • Trilo3y – 45 minutes, $20
  • Results-Based Training – 45 minutes, $20
  • RYDE indoor cycling – 45 minutes, $20

Pure-Form Pilates

Pilates, a method designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body, uses low-impact exercises and focused breathing patterns to tone your muscles.

Pilates classes on Holland America ships are mat-based, and use Pilates rings, foam-core rollers, and weighted balls as well as your own body mass for resistance. HAL doesn’t offer Reformer Pilates classes.

Pure-Form Yoga

Whether you’re an experienced yogi or new to the practice, Holland America’s yoga classes can help you increase your balance, concentration, and focus.

This ancient method combines physical poses, concentration, and deep breathing to help with strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall well-being.

TRX Suspension Training

Looking for a fun group fitness class to try on your cruise? TRX Suspension Training is an innovative method that harnesses body weight to create resistance.

Your instructor will show you how to use the TRX strap system to help tighten your core—building strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility.

Fun fact: TRX Suspension Training was originally designed by a US Navy SEAL. But you don’t need to be in tip-top shape to try it! You can simply adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance.

The progressive exercise method known as Trilo3y fuses three key components of fitness—cardio, strength, and stretching—into a 45-minute workout.

Results-Based Training (RBT)

This functional fitness program was designed to get maximum results in minimum time. Your class will combine large compound movements with a continuous flow of exercises to keep your heart pumping for the entire workout.

RYDE indoor cycling

With high-energy music fueling this workout, you’ll pedal through a series of virtual landscapes to get the feeling of real road cycling. Take your spin class to the next level and burn some serious calories!

Money-saving tip: To score a discount on fitness classes, Holland America lets cruisers buy either a package of three classes, or a pass that you can use for five to seven days.

One-on-one training + consultation

Holland America also offers one-on-one training and consultations at the fitness center, for an additional charge. Options include:

  • Personal Training – 60 minutes, $99 / 3 sessions $249
  • Body Composition Analysis – 30 minutes, $39
  • InBody 570 Compositional Analysis – 60 minutes, $99
  • Nutritional Consultation – 60 minutes, $99

Personal Training

Book an individualized training session with one of the fitness center’s professionals to learn which exercises will work best for you. Your session includes an in-depth consultation and body composition analysis.

Body Composition Analysis

A fitness center pro will use a biodynamic electrostatic machine to determine exactly how much lean mass you currently have. They’ll then design a personal training program to help you increase lean mass.

InBody 570 Compositional Analysis

Using the InBody 570, a state-of-the-art body composition analyzer, you’ll get a comprehensive analysis of your inner health using bioimpedance. With this service, you can find out precise measurements of your segmental muscle mass, body fat mass, and visceral fat. You’ll also find out about your metabolism, inflammation, and fluid retention levels.

Nutritional Consultation

If you’re looking to kick off a healthy diet and exercise program on your cruise, consider booking a nutritional consultation. You’ll sit down with a fitness professional who’ll create an in-depth, personalized program just for you.

If you’re not into group fitness classes, you’ll still have lots of opportunities to keep in shape on your cruise.

All Holland America ships feature a modern, well-maintained fitness center with plenty of cardio and weight machines.

Or, grab some friends and enjoy a game of basketball, volleyball, tennis or ping pong. You can even enjoy some fresh air (and an amazing sea view) by taking a run on your ship’s outdoor jogging track, or by walking a few laps on the Promenade Deck.

8 Things to Know About Working Out on a Cruise

For most people, a cruise is a relaxing vacation where they hang out poolside, drink, eat, and then grimace at the scale at the end of their vacation.

Gaining a few pounds during your trip is unsurprising given the availability of food all around the ship. Mix that with the fact that you get out of your workout routine that you might have back home, and it’s an easy recipe for weight gain.

The good news is that there are lots of workout options on a cruise ship. Whether you want to simply get a sweat up to burn off that dessert or you are training hard for a marathon or other event, you’ll be surprised at how a cruise can actually cater to your workout.

Here are a few things you should know about gyms and working out while on your vacation…

Treadmills on a cruise ship

Cruise Ship Gyms Are Ideally Located

If a hotel “fitness center” comes to mind when you think of working out on a cruise ship, then you should adjust your perception.

While a hotel might have a couple of weight machines and some free weights tucked into an oversized closet, cruise ships put some thought (and equipment) into the workout environment.

On most ships that means a great location that’s high up and next to the edge of the ship so you can get a ridiculously good view outside while you get in your workout. Envision a line of treadmills next to floor-to-ceiling windows; that’s what you’ll find on most ships.

Gyms Are Not Open Around the Clock (But Keep Long Hours)

These days many gyms make a big deal about being open 24 hours. We’ve found that on cruise ships it’s rare to find workout rooms open around the clock.

That said, they do keep long hours. Often gyms are open from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. So unless you are a complete night owl that likes to hit the weights at 3:00 a.m., then the hours should be accommodating.

Cruise Ship Gyms Have a Variety of Equipment

While each gym will vary, you’re going to find a range of different workout gear. Much of what you’ll find is the same things you’ll see in a traditional gym, just with fewer of each item to compensate for the space available.

Here’s a sample of what we’ve seen on ships:

  • Exercise bikes
  • Weight machines
  • Dumbbell free weights
  • Aerobic platforms

What you won’t find are lots of barbells and free weights — things like squat racks. We’ve seen them before (including in the gym pictured above), but not always.

We think that a rocking ship wouldn’t be the best place to have large free weights as the danger of them falling off (or someone losing their balance while lifting) would be too much.

Workouts Aren’t Confined to the Gym (Jogging Tracks & Courts)

While you might think that the fitness center is the only spot where you can shed some pounds on the ship, you’d be mistaken.

First, large cruise ships all have jogging tracks that will encircle the pool deck area. Especially in the mornings this is a great place to get a run in, and you’ll find many people doing just that. As the day goes on the track gets more crowded with people walking around the ship, making it harder to jog on the track without bumping into other passengers.

Most large cruise ships also have a basketball/sport court. If you’re the type who likes to work up a sweat but don’t want to be stuck in a gym, then you can shoot hoops, do some aerobics, or play other games. There’s sports equipment that can be checked out for free.

Finally, a few ships also have outdoor workout machines — similar to what you might find in a park. This equipment gets you out of the gym but still allows you to get your workout in.

The Gym Is Free to Use

These days it seems like prices on most everything on a cruise ship continue to rise. For instance, room service used to be free but now you often have to pay for it.

If you want to break a sweat, you’ll be happy to know that using the gym is free. Note that if you want services like massages after your workout, then you’ll have to pay for those in the spa, which is usually located adjacent to the fitness center.

Mornings Are Especially Popular for Workouts

It shouldn’t be surprising that mornings are the busiest time for the fitness areas on a cruise ship. Just like at home, people seem to like getting a workout in before the day gets going. It’s doubtful the gym will be packed, but you may have to wait for a machine due to someone else using it.

As the day goes on the gym empties out as more people head out to enjoy the activities around the ship or in port. If you want to work out when few people are around, try to schedule your visit for the middle of the afternoon.

Is it possible to wash out workout gear in your room? The alternative would be expensive laundry costs or packing several exercise outfits.

Sure. You could wash it in the cabin sink or in the shower. Just know it will take some time to dry. If you have a balcony, you could set it outside.

Do cruise ships have gyms? Here’s how to stay fit on a cruise

Do cruises have gyms? Even if you’re not super into working out, it’s a logical question when you consider how many other amenities are jam-packed onto modern vessels. The answer, of course, is yes, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend your entire vacation working up a sweat in order to stay healthy.

Fitness fiends are often quick to decry cruises because of the all-you-can-eat buffets, inclusive beverage packages and proliferation of opportunities to be sedentary. All this can make for a great vacation, but if you’re not careful, you could fall into some unhealthy patterns.

That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a few daiquiris and complimentary soft-serve ice cream, but whether you’re on the ship for a few nights or months, staying active’s important. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep yourself healthy while you’re cruising, even if you never set foot in the gym.

Here’s how you can stay fit on your next voyage while minimizing the time you spend exercising — unless, of course, you’re really into fitness .

Get your exercise

Most cruise ships have fitness centers that are free to use. Although some of the biggest workout fanatics will spend time there daily, most people looking for a sweat session hit the gym on sea days. (Go at peak dining times if you’d like to avoid the crowds.)

You’ll often find a wide range of cardio machines, including treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and rowers, as well as weight training machines (cable machines and a leg press) and free weights. You might also find high-intensity interval training equipment like kettlebells and medicine balls, plus some yoga mats, bands and foam rollers for stretching out those muscles.

Many cruise ships also offer fitness classes. Royal Caribbean , for example, offers yoga, Pilates and spinning classes on their ships. Carnival Cruise Line offers the same, plus boot camp classes. On Norwegian Cruise Line , you can also take a spin class or a high-intensity boxing class. These are often available for an additional fee.

The exception to the extra-fee class rule is Virgin Voyages , a relative newcomer to the industry. The line’s vessels offer all fitness classes at no charge , and the variety is both refreshing and fun. In addition to bungee classes, yoga and spin, passengers can choose from HIIT sessions, Muscle Beach-style workouts and even an ’80s aerobics class where themed attire is highly encouraged and Shake Weights are the apparatus of choice.

Many small-ship and upscale cruise lines also include group fitness classes in their fares.

Prefer to stay outside and maximize the sunlight? Take to the top deck for a run.

Every Royal Caribbean ship except Empress of the Seas has a running track. On Carnival cruises, you’ll find padded running tracks on nearly all of the vessels. If you’re looking for something a bit less mundane, check out Celebrity Cruises ‘ Edge-class ships , which feature tracks that wind around the outer decks in a figure-eight that offers inclines and declines to keep things interesting. On Virgin’s vessels, the track is alone on the top deck, making it easier to burn calories without worrying that you’ll run into someone or trip over a deck chair.

Best of all, you don’t need to work out to stay fit during a cruise. All you have to do is skip the elevator. The largest passenger cruise ship on Earth, Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas , has 18 decks: If you walk up and down the stairs every day, you’ll be shocked how quickly you get in your steps during a cruise — even if you are on your way to the buffet.

Watch what you eat

You might think it’s impossible to eat healthy on a cruise ship , but it’s pretty easy.

First, the dreaded buffet isn’t so bad. With ample salad bars, fresh soups and extensive fruit selections, the buffets offer plenty of options for selective travelers who wish to avoid the endless supply of French fries and mozzarella sticks. In the morning, breakfast buffets typically include a make-your-own omelet bar (request egg whites with vegetables and hold the cheese), hard-boiled eggs and more fruit.

When you’re at home, it might be difficult to find fresh or healthy foods, and they are often more expensive than their processed counterparts. But at a cruise ship buffet, making the healthy choice costs nothing.

In sit-down restaurants, cruise lines increasingly have a handful of healthful dishes on the menu, even if they’re not crowd-pleasers. Some vessels dedicate sections of restaurant menus to healthy fare. Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 ‘s Britannia restaurant, for example, offers spa cuisine items designed in partnership with Canyon Ranch.

Other lines are doubling down on the wellness movement by introducing health-focused a la carte restaurants. Grab a seat at Celebrity’s complimentary Spa Cafe, now on most of the line’s vessels. Cruisers can order grilled chicken breast with steamed vegetables; a low-sodium arugula salad with grapefruit segments; and poached fruits with herbs and spices.

On some Princess Cruises vessels, cruisers can now elbow up to an Ocean Terrace Bar turning out raw, fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices (for an upcharge). Even budget line Carnival has a Mongolian Wok restaurant on several of its ships. Tip: Skip the noodles and stick with fresh vegetables and lean proteins.

Lines have stepped up their game in the last few years with regard to dietary restrictions. Not only can you find more vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu items, but you can also look for desserts marked as sugar-free if you’re hoping to limit your intake of sweets.

Cruisers should also be mindful of those pesky liquid calories. We’re talking about alcohol, juice and soda — or tropical cocktails containing all three. Stick with red wine or straight liquor mixed with club soda instead, or try a NorCal Margarita: tequila, club soda, lemon or lime, salt and ice.

It might be tempting to grab a slice of cake or a frozen cocktail when they’re constantly available, but the key is to not go overboard. (See what I did there?)

Book active excursions

When the ship arrives at a port, you’ll want to disembark, stretch your legs and explore — not spend a day in the gym. And that’s good news because there are plenty of ways to get your steps on dry land.

Depending on where you’re cruising, you might have the opportunity to go cycling, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, paddleboarding or surfing. Take advantage of cruise ship shore excursions and find ways to be active while sightseeing. Even if you don’t book a walking tour in a major city, try to make active choices when possible. For example, did you know the average person can burn between 250 and 300 calories in an hour of snorkeling?

River cruise lines are also diving into the fitness fray. AmaWaterways has dedicated wellness hosts who lead active excursions ashore, as well as fitness classes on board (resistance band stretches, cardio dance). Last year, wellness hosts were available on all but three AmaWaterways vessels. They lead groups of cruisers on excursions such as bike rides along the Regensburg countryside or guided hikes up the Philosopher’s Path in Heidelberg.

Bottom line

Cruises can be a great way to kick back and relax or explore multiple destinations without having to unpack multiple times — but that doesn’t mean you should completely toss away your fitness routine. Cruise lines have made it easy for passengers to hit the gym, take a fitness class or go for a run both on board and on dry land. So take advantage of the convenient exercise options, even for just a few minutes a day.

Huge  Facilities  with Everything You Need <span data-ccp-props=”{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}”> 

Royal Caribbean’s biggest ships have the most comprehensive fitness centers. When you walk into the spaces on Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, you’ll think you are in a full-scale, land-based gym .  

Same goes for Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, which feature especially large spaces with panoramic views from the front of the ship on Deck 16.   

The gyms on all of these Royal Caribbean mega-ships feature separate spin class studios and tons of integrated floor space for classes.   

Cruise Compete

MSC Cruises offers outstanding fitness centers on its MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview ships , which also have all the modern resistance and cardio equipment alongside sports-specific items like heavy bags for boxing and kickboxing moves and gymnastic rings.  

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge has a huge space carved out for its gym facility , with every piece of equipment imaginable and three separate studios for a range of specialty classes.  

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ships, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Bliss feature separate cardio studios and free-weight weight areas stocked with equipment like dumbbells, barbells, kettle bells, as well as dozens of cardio machines.  

In the Great Outdoors  

In addition to the large gym on Celebrity Edge (see above), this cruise ship has an incredible two-deck jogging track. The track features gradual changes in elevation as it flows seamlessly between Decks 15 and 16. This varying surface makes for a good workout that is not simply monotonous circular laps. Plus, it is not encroached by sun loungers.  

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas also offer large jogging tracks. These tracks are the best on any cruise ships. They are 2.4 laps per mile (twice as long as most ships) and located in a dedicated space on Deck 5 — away from the harsh sun and heat (which is tough to handle when sailing in the Caribbean) and crowded lounge chair areas that frustrate many runners who try to navigate jogging lanes that are near the pool decks on most ships .  

Carnival Cruise Line ships Carnival Breeze, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Magic, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista all feature imaginative SkyFitness top-of-ship areas that offer workout equipment, such as stationary bikes, ellipticals, punching bags and weight-training machines, all available in an outdoor space for exhilarating workouts in the fresh air.  

Princess Cruises also offers outdoor workout stations around the jogging tracks on the line’s Regal Princess and Royal Princess ships.   

Classes in Session  

In addition to larger and better conceived facilities to please the fitness-inclined cruiser, the cruise lines are offering a range of fitness classes (free and for a fee) aimed to please passengers.   

Carnival Cruise offers a Ryde spin class studio on its Carnival Horizon and Carnival Vista ships. This is an interactive and challenging cycling workout during which you track your effort and progress on a video screen and can compete with other participants in the class (or compete against yourself to improve).  

These days, cruise ships are offering more and more fun fitness classes — like kickboxing, boot camp classes, TRX training and Tour de Cycle and Peloton spin classes. You also can join in the traditional favorites like Zumba, Pilates, yoga and stretch classes. Personal training sessions (fee) are also available if you want to ramp up your regimen or start a program with the input of a trained professional.

Innovative and Immersive Fitness Programs  

Some cruise lines have taken the additional step of incorporating fitness programming into the overall experience as a part of the theme of your voyages.   

River cruise line AmaWaterways offers a wellness host on each of its cruise ships as part of the Wellness Program. This expert offers five or six workout and stretch classes every day throughout the voyage. You can take part in a morning stretch and yoga sessions to prepare you for your day . You might also like the Pilates, resistance-band training or Latin dance and circuit classes.  

MSC Cruises offers a “Wellness Experience” program onboard MSC Divina , MSC Seaview and MSC Seaside. Passengers who choose this experience that was developed by MSC Cruises in partnership with TechnoGym receive special use of state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a comprehensive one-on-one health assessment, a personalized fitness program and a selection of healthy food and drink options.   

Blue World Voyages is a cruise line that has built its entire brand around the idea of catering to travelers who prefer an active lifestyle full of sports, health and wellness activities.   

Blue World Voyages offers a ship with a complete deck devoted to sports and fitness. You’ll find a spacious functional training gym, batting cages and golf, soccer and hockey simulators. It also features spinning and TRX studios, an onboard Hank Haney golf school and a sea-water lap pool. Another deck features the spa and wellness facilities. You’ll also discover farm-to-table cuisine, educational programs, guest lecturers, evening entertainment, and much more.  

The ship also has a large floating platform that will serve as a marina when the ship is anchored. The dock creates a lap pool right in the sea waters. This is essential a floating watersports playground for launching kayaking, paddle boarding and open-water swimming.

We have some bad news for you — your ship has a gym. In other words, there’s no excuse for leaving your fitness routine back on land. That’s great news, however, for your body, which will definitely benefit from all the extra energy that vacationing pumps directly into you. Fun

Cynthia reported for the El Paso Times newspaper 10 years. She also wrote radio editorials for Fred Hervey in El Paso during the '70s and 80s. Fred Hervey was founder and creator of the Circle K Corporation and business mentor to Cynthia for many years. By the late 1980s, before CNN existed, Cynthia and El Paso NBC TV News anchor Peter Heinlein established a television news bureau in Washington, D.C. to send satellite news reports back to TV stations out West covering issues important to America's western population. Cynthia was a Texas CBS TV affiliate News anchor who realized New York City and Washington, D.C. Network News anchors and reporters had no idea what was important to Americans living out west. Soon she and Peter resigned from their TV anchor positions in Texas to partner with Fred Hervey in creating Sun World Satellite TV News based in Washington, D.C. Within 10 years their independently owned and operated TV news bureau on Capitol Hill broadcast daily reports via satellite to 365 ABC, NBC and CBS TV affiliates across the South and Western parts of of America. Peter Heinlein later joined Voice Of America . By 1990 Cynthia was on her way to the Soviet Union to open a second TV News bureau in Moscow as a result of President Reagan's "People To People" exchange coordinated with then Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev. Her bureau sent back to America's CBS, NBC and ABC affiliates reports explaining how Soviet actions were affecting their cities too in the USA, not just Washington, D.C. Oil, natural gas, agriculture and military concerns were major news stories affecting communities both in the USA and Russia then, just as they do today. The Soviet government permitted Cynthia to report from Moscow because Fred Hervey's Sun World Corporation agreed to print in English, and distribute in the USA, the first ever free speech Soviet newspaper. This brave, brand new weekly newspaper published in Moscow was named Nezavisimaya Gazeta which means in English the Independent Newspaper. It advocated Russia be an independent Democratic country allowing free press, free speech and free enterprise for all citizens.

Cynthia is a 1975 graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso where she attended on journalism scholarships and grants. She was married to the late Ron McCluskey, an El Paso labor lawyer, who also served as Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C. to the late Democratic Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman of Maryland. Cynthia and Ron's son, Patrick McCluskey, lives in Austin, TX with his wife Shannon and their three children: Bryan, Grace and Paula. One of the US's busiest cruise ports can't keep up with America's love for vacations at sea — but an urgent new terminal will help meet the demand for giant cruise ships

Florida — home to busy beaches, Disney World, and a cruise industry so successful that local ports simply can't keep up with demand.

The Sunshine State flexes seven cruise ports, three of which — Miami, Canaveral, and Everglades — are among the five busiest in the world.

The state may seem well stocked as far as cruise terminals go. But Port Canaveral is running out of space as demand for these vacation voyages continues to skyrocket.

In 2023 , the Florida port accommodated a record 6.8 million cruisers and 13 homeported ships, leading to an all-time-high revenue of $191 million — more than 80% of which came from its cruise operations.

In 2024, it expects to add another 500,000 passengers to that total.

The influx in demand has left Port Canaveral at "a point where we're starting to turn business away," John Murray, its CEO, said at a press conference earlier this month.

The proposed solution? Expand — and quickly. The port announced plans to build a seventh cruise terminal on its north side by 2026, scrapping its initial proposal for one farther south. The latter would've taken longer to build, but "we need it in two years," Murray said, adding: "Maybe sooner."

The proposed terminal would be at the port's "underutilized" North 8 berth. When complete, it could accommodate the world's largest cruise ships, including Royal Caribbean's new 1,198-foot-long, 9,950-person-capacity Icon of the Seas .

Murray said the project would be "self-funded." There's no word yet on the cost, but a spokesperson for Port Canaveral told Business Insider that the existing berth would make construction cheaper than that of previous cruise terminals. The most recent one, completed in 2020, cost $155 million.

Before unveiling these plans, Port Canaveral intended to build its next terminal in an area known as Bluepoints Marina, farther south. The project would've taken three to four years to complete — too long a timeline for Port Canaveral.

A new cruise terminal "has become more urgent and necessary now," Murray said.

Along with a seventh terminal, Port Canaveral plans to build a 3,000-car parking structure and improve the roads leading into and out of the parking lot.

Expanding parking on land is just as important as in the water: Cruise lines have been increasingly developing private islands and destinations in the Caribbean, often visited during three- and four-day cruises. Murray said these shorter sailings typically bring in more vehicular traffic than their five- to seven-day counterparts.

Wooing cruise lines operating on these itineraries could be especially important for Port Canaveral, which is farther north from the private Caribbean destinations than Miami's and Fort Lauderdale's popular ports.

Competition is stiff. In January, MSC Group announced that its cruise lines would move their operations to Miami. In late 2023, Disney Cruise Line unveiled a new terminal at Port Everglades.

"A place like Port Canaveral is continually thinking about retaining the business it has and, of course, capturing some of that business," Ross Klein, the founder of CruiseJunkie.com and a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, told BI.

But not everyone is excited

While an influx of travelers can be an economic windfall for nearby restaurants and hotels, not all locals are happy about the new cruise terminal.

The world's largest cruise ships can accommodate more than 7,000 guests. That's a lot of travelers — and traffic, which is a concern for Jamie Glasner, the owner of the Bluepoints Marina-based fishing charter Fin and Fly . (BI spoke with Glasner before Port Canaveral announced its terminal in the North 8 berth.)

"These cruise ships come in, and the traffic is backed up for miles," Glasner told BI, adding that other local business owners complained "about it all the time."

"The traffic is a nightmare. This is crazy," he said.

"It used to only take us 10 minutes to get home," Glasner said. "Now it's taking me an hour."

Cruise travelers accounted for roughly 840,000 cars at Port Canaveral last year, Murray said in late 2023. At the time, he said that updates such as a "pay-on-arrival" parking system and the increased use of facial recognition by US Customs and Border Protection helped improve the flow of traffic.

To lessen traffic stress, the port wants the state to widen the nearby freeway and replace the drawbridge connecting the north and south halves of Port Canaveral with a higher, fixed bridge. The latter often opens for passing ships, further jamming up the roads.

However, these proposals have yet to be included in the Florida Department of Transportation's budget, "so we will continue to make noise on that," Murray said during the announcement of the port's seventh cruise terminal. "We can't shut down operations at Port Canaveral because the state can't get the road infrastructure in a timely manner," he added.

But love it or hate it, the cruise industry continues to grow . And the sooner Port Canaveral can build a new terminal, the happier it, and cruise lines, will be.

"We're going to do what we have to do to get this up and running as quickly as possible," Murray told reporters.

5 Americans held in Turks and Caicos for having ammunition as U.S. lawmakers fail to secure their release

U.S. lawmakers traveled to Turks and Caicos this week to push for the return of five American citizens detained on ammunition possession charges, but failed to facilitate their release.

The Americans were arrested in the last five months under a strict law in Turks and Caicos that prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition and carries a mandatory 12-year sentence.

One American, Michael Lee Evans, was jailed in December; Bryan Hagerich was arrested in February; and two Americans, Ryan Watson and Tyler Scott Wenrich, have been detained since April. The latest arrest occurred on May 13 when Sharitta Grier was jailed.

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., said a group of lawmakers "went in respectful" and "with an open mind looking to find common ground" during a meeting Monday with the Turks and Caicos government.

"Unfortunately, despite our willingness to work with Turks and Caicos officials to get our constituents home, we were not able to find a path forward today," Mullin said Monday in a statement on X. "At this point, well-intentioned American citizens are facing a dozen years in prison all for unknowingly having one or two bullets in their luggage."

Watson, 40, of Oklahoma, traveled to the islands with his wife, Valerie Watson, and two friends to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. The trip came to a screeching halt when airport staff found hunting ammunition in a carry-on case belonging to the couple.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," he told  NBC Boston . "I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there.'"

The couple was arrested but the charges were dropped against Valerie Watson. She later returned home to Oklahoma City.

Airport security also found ammunition in Hagerich's luggage as he tried to board a flight with his family out of Turks and Caicos. Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Wenrich, 31, of Virginia, was arrested after two 9 mm rounds were found in his bag after he tried to reboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship following a beach excursion, NBC Boston reported.

He told the news station that he had used the bag to go to the shooting range with friends and checked the bag before his trip.

"It was just a complete oversight on me, TSA and the port security," he said. "Three groups missed that ammunition."

Grier, 45, of Florida, said the ordeal has been a "nightmare." She told NBC Boston that she took a trip to the islands for Mother's Day weekend with her daughters.

Grier was arrested after security at the Howard Hamilton Airport in Providenciales found two bullets in her luggage, according to the station.

"It   was an honest mistake, it fell up under the bottom of the flap in my carry-on," she said. "There was no way possible that I could see it because it’s a flap in the bottom. They took the bottom of the flap out the bag. That’s where the two rounds was, in the bottom of that flap. So, it’s no way that I would of knew or seen them in there."

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas had warned travelers in September that authorities in Turks and Caicos strictly enforce laws related to firearms and ammunition.

Violators "are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures" and the embassy "will not be able to secure your release from custody," it said.

Mullin said the islands' law has "unintended consequences."

"We will stay at the table through this process until the issue is resolved," he said in his statement.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., joined the lawmakers on the trip and said they had a chance to meet with the detained Americans.

"These people did not set out to break the law," he said in a statement. "They are people who made a mistake and now face substantial time in prison because of it. As we articulated to TCI officials, I urge the court to be lenient when addressing this case."

Fetterman said he left the meetings "optimistic that we can get this resolved."

Rep. Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., said the lawmakers had a "diplomatic" discussion with Turks and Caicos government officials.

"I reiterated that with Turks and Caicos’ economy being 65 percent based on tourism, and with 80 percent of that coming from the United States, it is in their interest to ensure justice prevails," Brecheen said in a post on X .

"We were emphatic that it would be unfathomable for five Americans, including Oklahoma’s own Ryan Watson, to face 12 years in prison for accidentally leaving a handful of shells in their luggage," he continued.

Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., said in a post on X he is "very concerned" about the consequences the Americans face.

The governor’s office of Turks and Caicos said in a news release that “per the constitutional separation of the executive and judicial branches” Gov. Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam and Honourable Premier Charles Washington Misick cannot intervene or comment on pending legal cases.

But the court can find that there are "exceptional circumstances" where a judge could "impose a custodial sentence and a fine that are fair and just in the circumstances of each case rather than impose the mandatory minimum," the office said.

If the Americans are sentenced, Brecheen said the U.S. must "respond appropriately, using every economic tool in our toolbox."

Evans, 72, of Texas, pleaded guilty to possessing seven 9 mm rounds of ammunition, according to authorities, and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18.

Wenrich and Watson also have a court hearing in June, police said. Grier's hearing is scheduled for July.

First cruise ship sets sail from Port of Baltimore since Key Bridge collapse: ‘It’s a good day’

The festive occasion marked the first cruise ship to arrive and depart the Port of Baltimore since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.

Less than a week prior, the terminal was the headquarters for the Key Bridge Response Unified Command to coordinate recovery operations, Daniels said. They began condensing their workspace down last weekend, started packing up Monday night after the Dali was refloated that morning and were out by Tuesday afternoon.

“While there is still work that needs to be done to be able to complete the salvage operation, this is a wonderful sign that the next milestone is pointing to the fact that business is truly returning to the port,” Daniels said.

Just after 10 a.m., the sound of steel drums echoed in the terminal as it began to fill with passengers eager to board Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas cruise ship for a five-night trip to Bermuda.

Tom Sitzler said he and his group had planned the trip since August to celebrate his partner’s 60th birthday. They live in Washington, D.C., but had a very specific reason to sail out of the Port of Baltimore.

“The whole purpose of the cruise though was to actually cruise out of Baltimore out past Annapolis, because Allen grew up there, the birthday boy, and he wants to see Annapolis from the bay,” Sitzler said.

“I’ve always wanted to cruise down the bay and see all the spots where I grew up,” said Allen Steven, the birthday boy.

Cruises that were already underway or were scheduled in the past two months have been rerouted to the Norfolk Cruise Terminal . Steven said if their trip had been moved to leave from Norfolk, they would have rebooked.

A group of five friends from Harford County also were heading on a cruise to celebrate, donning matching pink hats that said “Friends on the Loose 2024 Friends Trip.”

“We are celebrating a milestone birthday,” said Kathy Schlehr. “We have all attained the age of 70 or beyond.”

“Not yet!” someone chimed in.

The group said they were ecstatic when they found out about a week and a half ago they would be sailing out of the Port of Baltimore. The departure location was one of the reasons they went on the cruise.

The return of cruises benefits the tourism industry in Baltimore and the rest of the state, Daniels said.

More than 440,000 passengers went through the Cruise Maryland Terminal in 2023, he said, and they may also stay in hotels, eat at restaurants and even come back to enjoy the city afterward.

“Many of them are experiencing what Baltimore has to offer for the very first time,” Daniels said.

The 915-foot long vessel with a 25-foot draft got underway after 4 p.m. and used the 400-foot-wide, 50-foot-deep channel that opened Tuesday in the Patapsco River. In addition to a pilot, it was accompanied by two tugboats.

Even though the Unified Command vacated the cruise terminal, operations are still ongoing, just back in their own spaces, said David O’Connell, the Coast Guard’s captain of the port. They coordinate daily on ongoing operations, including salvage work in the main and outside channels as well as coordinating with the Army Corps of Engineers on vessel traffic in the temporary channels.

Saturday, the Army Corps announced a delayed goal of June 8-10 to restore full access to the federal channel. Officials had previously said this would be achieved by the end of May.

“It was great all being together and coordinating operations, but it’s great to be here and see this place in a different light,” O’Connell said. “You see it lively with people that are going on vacation, going through security, the ship is out back. It’s a good day.”
