Caribbean Airlines unveils hummingbird livery as it readies to replace BWIA

2006-10-16T16:15:00+01:00

Trinidad and Tobago startup operator Caribbean Airlines today unveiled its planned new livery and logo as it readies to replace 66-year old flag carrier BWIA West Indies Airways on January 1.

Caribbean livery

Caribbean Airlines’ new livery centers on a green and blue hummingbird that is mid-flight. Early references to Trinidad refer to “the land of the hummingbird” and this makes the symbol “highly appropriate as an emblem for Caribbean Airlines”, says BWIA CEO Peter Davies in a statement.

Displayed beside the hummingbird, the carrier’s name is written in casual lettering and features magenta and purple hues.

“Caribbean Airlines style of service will be professional but not distant, personable not pushy, genuine not contrived, very natural and easy,” says Davies. “Its character will capture the diverse aspects of the region, its food, music, decor, language and personality - essentially, the warmth of the islands.

“Today is the start of a very exciting phase in aviation in the Caribbean .”

The 30 Best-Looking Airlines Logos in The World

Rafat Ali, Skift

October 23rd, 2013 at 5:00 AM EDT

We would totally put any of these logos on a t-shirt! But seriously, airline branding is a serious multi-billion dollar matter, and smart airlines are using their distinctive logos to stand apart. Or should.

airlines tourist carrier with hummingbird logo

We’re obsessed with travel branding here at Skift, and earlier this year we came up with a fun list of the “ 20 Most Colorful Airlines in the World ,” which was very well received.

This time we decided to go a little deeper, and explore logo design with this new list. The criteria wasn’t exactly scientific, or deep, just in the eye of the…well, us Skifters. It was a mix of what looks great on an airline tail, plus what would look great on a t-shirt .

These 30 airlines from around the world represent a broad geographic mix, and show the predominance of national flag carriers when it comes to conveying a sense of history through the logo design.

Some observations :

  • Birds dominate airline logo and branding, for obvious reasons. Other animals come second.
  • The flag carriers (the national carriers) are the ones with most eye-catching and historic logos.
  • Ironically, Iran Air, which has been severely hampered by the international sanctions against the country it represents, Iran, has one of the most eye-catching logos of all.
  • Most of the ornate ones have been refreshed for the modern era, and hence you see a lot of them with curved lines and pastel colors.
  • Some of the Middle East airlines, with their cool Arabic calligraphy/typography, work very well when it comes to conveying brand distinctiveness.
  • Landor Associates is everywhere as the design agency of choice when airlines around the world need to refresh their branding; followed by Interbrand and Futurebrand.
  • Low-cost airlines have been at the forefront in making their airline design colorful, as our previous list highlighted, but don’t figure anywhere in intricate logo design.
  • Africa is under-represented, which shows the state of airline branding and marketing in the continent, though that is rapidly changing with new entrants, especially the low-cost ones.
  • Three U.S. airlines show up in the list — Alaska, American and Hawaiian — though Southwest may qualify in a bigger list.
  • We chose not to include British Airways because of the ubiquity of its design and color scheme, and with its actual logo being too generic and simplified to figure in our litmus test of t-shirt design.
  • Etihad and Qatar need to catch up with its bigger cousin Emirates, which is miles ahead when it comes to overall branding and marketing.

What are the symbolisms behind hummingbird logo designs.

Hummingbird logo design is not just a visually stunning choice; it's a rich tapestry of meanings and symbolisms. Often, a logo is the first thing that captures the attention of your audience, and what better way to make a lasting impression than with a hummingbird in your branding? Let's dive into the vibrant world of hummingbirds and uncover the symbolisms that make them an exceptional choice for logos.

Symbol of Joy and Happiness

Hummingbirds, with their bright colors and rapid movements, are often seen as symbols of joy and happiness. In a hummingbird logo design, this joyful energy can be harnessed to portray a brand as upbeat, positive, and life-affirming. Imagine a logo that not only represents your brand but also uplifts the mood of anyone who sees it. Now, that's a cheerful thought!

Agility and Speed

These tiny birds are renowned for their incredible agility and speed. Incorporating a hummingbird in your logo can symbolize your brand's efficiency, responsiveness, and ability to adapt quickly to new challenges. It's like saying, "Hey, we're as quick and nimble as a hummingbird in meeting your needs!" A perfect fit for industries where speed and agility are paramount.

Endurance and Resilience

Despite their small size, hummingbirds are tough. They undertake long migrations and exhibit remarkable resilience. A hummingbird logo can embody these qualities, representing a brand that is enduring, resilient, and capable of overcoming obstacles. It's a subtle nod to the idea that great things come in small packages.

Beauty and Attraction

There's no denying the aesthetic appeal of hummingbirds. Their iridescent feathers and graceful flight patterns are a sight to behold. A hummingbird-themed logo can therefore symbolize beauty, elegance, and an ability to attract attention in a crowded marketplace. It's like saying, "Our brand is as captivating and beautiful as a hummingbird.”

Renewal and Growth

Hummingbirds are often associated with the idea of renewal and continual growth. They constantly seek out new sources of nectar, symbolizing the never-ending quest for improvement and evolution. A hummingbird in your logo can represent a brand that's always growing, evolving, and seeking new ways to thrive.

A hummingbird logo design is much more than just an aesthetic choice. It's a powerful symbol that can embody joy, agility, resilience, beauty, and growth. Whether you're rebranding or starting fresh, consider the hummingbird for a logo that's not just visually appealing, but also rich in meaning and symbolism. So, spread your wings and let your brand soar with the spirited essence of a hummingbird!

What Are the Common Styles in Hummingbird Logo Designs?

When it comes to hummingbird logo design, the sky is the limit! These little birds, known for their vibrant plumage and energetic flight, have inspired a wide range of logo styles. Whether you're a start-up, a nature-based enterprise, or just looking for a logo that stands out, there's a hummingbird style waiting to take flight for your brand. Let's explore the five common styles that make hummingbird logos a swoon-worthy choice for designers and businesses alike.

Minimalist and Modern

Minimalism isn't just a design choice; it's a statement. In hummingbird logo designs, minimalism strips the bird down to its basic elements – think clean lines, simple shapes, and a monochrome color palette. This style resonates with brands that value sophistication and modernity. It’s like saying, “We're as sleek and efficient as a hummingbird in flight,” but in the most elegantly understated way.

Watercolor Wonders

There's something whimsically charming about watercolor designs. When applied to hummingbird logos, this style can create a sense of fluidity and natural beauty. The blending of colors mimics the bird's iridescent feathers, making the logo appear vibrant and alive. This style is perfect for brands seeking to showcase creativity, artistry, or a connection to nature. It's like your brand is a canvas, and the hummingbird is the masterpiece.

Geometric and Abstract

Geometric designs bring a modern twist to the classic hummingbird image. By using shapes like triangles, circles, and squares, these logos present a more abstract and contemporary version of the bird. This style is ideal for tech companies or innovative brands looking to portray themselves as cutting-edge and dynamic – just like the quick, darting movements of a hummingbird.

Vintage and Retro

For a touch of nostalgia, the vintage or retro style in hummingbird logo design can be quite enchanting. These designs often feature muted color palettes and classic typography, evoking a sense of timelessness and tradition. It's a nod to the past with a modern twist, perfect for brands wanting to showcase heritage, craftsmanship, or an enduring legacy.

Realistic and Detailed

If your brand's story is one of authenticity and precision, a realistic hummingbird logo might be your best bet. These designs focus on lifelike details – from the feathers to the bird's posture. It's a style that requires skill and attention to detail, making it a great choice for luxury brands, photographers, or any business that prides itself on precision and high-quality standards.

Choosing a hummingbird logo design means embracing a world of creativity and versatility. Whether your brand resonates with the sleekness of minimalism, the creativity of watercolor, the innovation of geometric shapes, the nostalgia of vintage, or the precision of realism, there’s a hummingbird style to match your brand's personality. So, let your brand take flight with a hummingbird logo that's as unique and dynamic as your business!

What Types of Brands or Industries Are Suitable in Using Hummingbird Logo Designs?

Hummingbird logo design isn't just about adding a pretty bird to your brand's visual identity; it's about choosing a symbol that resonates with your industry's ethos and values. Hummingbirds, known for their vibrancy, agility, and resilience, can be a perfect fit for a wide range of brands and industries. Let's explore the top five types of brands or industries where a hummingbird logo could really make your brand take flight!

Environmental and Conservation Organizations

If your brand is all about loving Mother Nature and protecting our feathery friends, then a hummingbird logo is a natural fit. Environmental NGOs, conservation groups, and wildlife sanctuaries can use the hummingbird symbol to represent their commitment to preserving nature's beauty and diversity. It's like saying, “We care about the little guys!” and what better ambassador for this message than a tiny, vibrant hummingbird?

Health and Wellness Brands

In many cultures, hummingbirds are seen as healers or bearers of good health and vitality. For brands in the health and wellness industry, a hummingbird logo can symbolize the joy and energy that comes with good health. Whether you're a yoga studio, a health food brand, or a wellness app, a hummingbird can represent your brand's commitment to helping people live their best, healthiest lives.

Travel and Tourism Companies

Known for their long migrations, hummingbirds are the ultimate travelers. For travel agencies, airlines, and tourism companies, a hummingbird logo can symbolize the joy of travel and exploration. It’s a way to say, “Let us guide you on your next adventure,” with a logo that embodies the spirit of discovery and wanderlust.

Creative and Design Agencies

The agility and speed of hummingbirds can be a great metaphor for the creative process – quick, dynamic, and always in motion. For design studios, marketing agencies, or any brand that prides itself on creativity and innovation, a hummingbird logo can be an emblem of your brand's artistic spirit and originality. It’s like telling your clients, “We bring your ideas to life, swiftly and beautifully.”

Beauty and Fashion Brands

The natural elegance and beauty of hummingbirds make them a fitting symbol for the fashion and beauty industries. For brands that want to convey sophistication, elegance, and an eye for aesthetics, a hummingbird logo can be a perfect choice. It’s a way of saying, “Our brand is as exquisite and alluring as a hummingbird,” perfect for attracting customers who appreciate the finer things in life.

A hummingbird logo design can be a versatile and meaningful choice for a wide range of brands and industries. From environmental crusaders to wellness warriors, globe-trotting adventurers to creative maestros, and fashionistas to beauty gurus, the hummingbird is a symbol that can elevate your brand's identity and communicate your values in a visually stunning way. So, if you're thinking of giving your brand a boost, consider the humble hummingbird – a small bird with the power to make a big impression!

What Other Symbolisms Can I Feature in Hummingbird Logo Designs?

When it comes to hummingbird logo design, the sky's the limit in terms of the symbolism you can incorporate. These delightful birds aren't just about their charming looks; they bring a whole suitcase of meaningful symbols to your brand's doorstep. Let’s dive into the world of hummingbird symbolism and explore five additional elements you can feature in your logo designs to make them even more unique and resonant.

Flowers and Nature Elements

Hummingbirds have a love affair with flowers, and it's not just for their looks. Flowers in a hummingbird logo can symbolize growth, natural beauty, and a nurturing spirit. Including flowers, leaves, or even a hint of greenery can give your logo a touch of organic elegance and can be particularly effective for brands in the beauty, wellness, or environmental sectors. It's like saying, "Our brand is as natural and nurturing as the relationship between hummingbirds and flowers.”

Sun and Light Motifs

The iridescence of a hummingbird's feathers, which seems to change color in the light, is one of their most enchanting features. Including sun or light motifs in your hummingbird logo can symbolize positivity, enlightenment, and a bright future. This is perfect for brands that aim to inspire optimism or illuminate the path for their clients, like educational institutions or innovative tech companies.

Color Symbolism

The vibrant colors of a hummingbird are not just for show; they can carry deep symbolism. For instance, green can represent growth and harmony, while blue can signify trust and dependability. By carefully choosing the colors of your hummingbird logo, you can subtly convey your brand's values and personality. It's a way of adding an extra layer of meaning to your logo without saying a word.

Wind and Air Elements

As masters of the air, hummingbirds can symbolize freedom, flexibility, and the spirit. Including wind or air elements like swirls, breezes, or clouds can emphasize these qualities. This style is ideal for brands that wish to convey a sense of freedom, adaptability, or elevation – like travel agencies, educational platforms, or creative agencies.

Cultural and Mythological Symbols

Hummingbirds hold significant places in many cultures and mythologies. For example, in some Native American cultures, hummingbirds are seen as healers or bringers of love. In South American myths, they are often associated with joy and happiness. Incorporating these cultural or mythological elements can add depth and a story-telling aspect to your logo, making it not just a symbol but a narrative of your brand.

In summary, a hummingbird logo design can be a rich tapestry of symbolism, way beyond just the bird itself. From the natural elegance of flowers to the luminous allure of sun motifs, the strategic use of color, the freedom symbolized by wind elements, and the profound depth of cultural symbols, your hummingbird logo can be a unique, multi-layered emblem that resonates deeply with your audience. So, let your creativity soar and infuse your hummingbird logo with symbols that tell your brand's unique story!

What Are Some Creative Ideas for Hummingbird Logo Designs?

When it comes to hummingbird logo design, the possibilities are as endless as the sky these tiny birds dart through! Whether you're a start-up looking to make a bold statement or an established brand aiming for a fresh look, incorporating a hummingbird into your logo can infuse it with a sense of energy, elegance, and uniqueness. Here are five creative ideas to make your hummingbird logo design truly soar.

Abstract Artistry

Who says you have to be literal? An abstract hummingbird logo can be a fantastic way to stand out. Think geometric shapes, bold colors, and a modern art approach. This style is perfect for brands looking for a contemporary, artistic edge. It’s like playing a visual game of ‘spot the hummingbird’, where the bird is suggested through creative use of shapes and lines.

Mosaic Magic

Mosaics have a way of capturing attention with their intricate beauty. Designing a hummingbird logo in a mosaic style can add a sense of craftsmanship and detail to your brand. This could work wonderfully for artisanal brands, cafes, or boutiques – any business that prides itself on attention to detail and a touch of the unique.

Watercolor Whimsy

There’s something inherently charming about watercolors, and they can give your hummingbird logo a soft, dreamy quality. This style is perfect for brands that want to convey creativity, gentleness, and a connection to the arts. Imagine a logo where the hummingbird is a burst of watercolor hues, suggesting both fluidity and vibrancy.

Shadow and Silhouette

Sometimes, less is more. A hummingbird silhouette or shadow can be a powerful design choice, offering elegance and simplicity. This style can be particularly effective for luxury brands, high-end tech companies, or any business that wants to project sophistication and sleekness. It’s a minimalistic approach that says, “We’re effortlessly stylish.”

Vintage Vibes

For a touch of nostalgia, why not go vintage with your hummingbird logo? Think classic fonts, muted color palettes, and maybe even a hand-drawn feel. This style can resonate well with brands that have a story to tell – perhaps those in the hospitality industry, boutique businesses, or historical venues.

A hummingbird logo design offers a playground of creative possibilities. Ryanair CEO Calls Frontier's Blocked Middle Seat Product "Bullsh*t"

Frontier airlines flies teen to puerto rico instead of cleveland, "you were not there": frontier airlines tells passenger they were a no show after overbooking flight.

Eagle-eyed aviation enthusiasts will soon be able to spot a brand-new Frontier Airlines tail animal. In collaboration with the Jamaica Tourist Board, its next Airbus A321 neo will feature Jamaica’s national bird, the Red-Billed Streamer Tail Hummingbird, or doctor bird for short.

Eyes to the skies

Named in honor of late hotelier and Sandals Resorts founder Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Stewart the RedBilled Streamer Tail will celebrate the Caribbean island’s rich heritage. Delivery of the aircraft is expected in 2023.

While Frontier Airlines typically features endangered American wildlife, the new choice is a notable exception to honor Caribbean culture. Native to Jamaica, the doctor bird is a diverse species, recognizable by its bright, iridescent plume, and is often represented in local folklore and music.

“The launch of this new aircraft tail featuring the doctor bird shows the increasingly supportive relationship Jamaica shares with Frontier Airlines,” explained the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism.

“As the island’s national bird, the doctor bird helps tell the story of Jamaica’s rich culture and identity. It is significant that Frontier is celebrating the importance of both by showcasing the cherished symbol on its tail.”

Jamaica’s aviation and tourism industry is seeing a massive rebound , with a record 5 million tourists returning to soak up sun, sea, culture, and cocktails since the country reopened its borders in 2020. Collaboration with Frontier Airlines is not the only marketing drive for Jamaica’s Tourism Board; the organization recently launched a series of new advertisements amid the influx of tourists to promote its picturesque scenery and welcoming community, focusing on helping holidaymakers rediscover their ‘sense of adventure.’

By November, the island is expected to see 391 flights per week from 25 destinations worldwide, reaching around 90% of its pre-pandemic airport traffic by December 2022, according to the Airports Authority of Jamaica.

Final Frontier

Frontier Airlines has rapidly expanded its presence in Jamaica over the past several years. Since 2019 the carrier has ranked first as the fastest-growing airline based on seat figures to serve the country. As of 2022, Frontier Airlines operates flights between Jamaica and nine destinations across the United States.

In 2022 alone, the airline has introduced two new routes to Norman Manly International Airport (KIN) in Kingston from Atlanta ( ATL ) and Miami ( MIA ). Further flights to Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport ( MBJ ) from Dallas Fort Worth ( DFW ), St Louis ( STL ), Denver ( DEN ), and Chicago Midway ( MDW ) are set to launch in February.

The low-cost carrier initially began featuring an array of animals and their backstories on its jets back in the 1990s, carrying the tradition through its fleet conversion from Boeing 737 s to Airbus A320 s.

Frontier Airlines has used its featured creatures to highlight sustainability and conservation across the Americas, with notable tails including Juan the Puerto Rican Parrot, a critically endangered species with less than 30 in the wild, Crystal the Manatee, an endangered sea mammal residing around the United States gulf coast, and Frederick the Bald Eagle, a protected species renown for its symbolic representation of courage and strength.

What are your thoughts on Frontier Airlines’ new tail? What other animals would you like to see the carrier feature? Let us know in the comments.

Vertical Flight Society logo (linear)

On April 19, 2018, the American Helicopter Society International, Inc. announced its new brand name as the "Vertical Flight Society," and its new logo. (A logo guide on usage is also available.)

Since the idea of forming the American Helicopter Society was first conceived in February 1943, the hummingbird has been its symbol. Nicknamed "Hovey," she has changed over the years but has remained the enduring symbol of the Vertical Flight Society.

In a "Letter to the Editor" in the March/April 1995 issue of Vertiflite , AHS founding member Chester (Chet) D. Mayerson recalls:

airlines tourist carrier with hummingbird logo

During the two years that I was on the board, the AHS conducted the first of many technical meetings, held the very successful October 1944 banquet, published its first document (a Semi-Technical Note), established remote (to Bridgeport) chapters and recruited a membership of many hundreds, with assorted genders, citizenships, and backgrounds. I am most fortunate to have been a part of this history.

An explanation of the symbolism of the logo was first included in the “The American Helicopter Quarterly,” Vol. I, No. 1 (unfortunately the only issue ever printed) published in January 1946.

In the helicopter man has emulated one of nature’s most beautiful, agile and maneuverable creatures of flight:  the humming bird.  Like this tiniest of all birds, the helicopter can hover in free air, move with equal ease sidewards, backwards, up, down, or in an iota of time be buzzing forward at a comparatively high rate of speed.  It required little argument to convince the Society’s membership that the humming bird should serve as the central figure in the Society’s emblem.

Original AHS member pin

These words were expanded in scope by 1970 as the word "helicopter" was expanded to mean all vertical flight aircraft:

The American Helicopter Society

. . . The Society for Vertical Flight

In the helicopter and other types of direct-lift aircraft man emulates one of nature's most agile and maneuverable creatures of flight, the hummingbird. Like this tiniest of all birds, these VTOL (vertical take-off-and-landing) machines can hover in free air, move with equal ease sidewards, backwards, up, down, or accelerate rapidly to forward flight. Appropriately, the Society's emblem embodies the silhouette of a hummingbird. The bird, in blue, is outlined in gold and hovers on a white circular background. Name of the Society appears in gold on red between two gold concentric circles ringing the white area. The red, white and blue color scheme emphasizes U.S. origin of the Society.

AHS logo: Forum 22 (1966)

In 1957, the "Inc." was dropped on the logo used in the Forum program and the letters were stretched to fill the circumference of the logo, while shrunk in height, creating a modern look for the font. The black & white logo to the right appeared on the cover of the Forum 14 program that year. (Interestingly, on the AHS  Newsletter —  the precursor to  Vertifilte — the older "Inc." logo was used for several more years, as can be clearly shown in the famous photo with President Eisenhower on the May 1960 cover .)

A color version of the logo appeared on the cover of the Forum 22 program in 1966.

AHS Inc. The Society for Vertical Flight 1969

Although the "Inc." had first been eliminated in the 1957 Forum program, for the 25th Annual Forum in May 1969, the Forum program "Day-by-Day" schedule used the original logo but with an added "The Society for Vertical Flight" underneath the logo.

(The "Inc." logo occasionally reappeared, and can even be seen in 1982 issues of  Vertiflite .)

AHS International logo, Vertiflite 1982

From the July/August 1977 issue of Vertiflite  to early 1982, the Society added the word “International” below the AHS logo. (Beginning with the March/April 1982 issue of Vertiflite , the masthead changed to have no logo.)

AHS Nikolsky Medal

This is the image that was cast for the annual Alexander A. Nikolsky Lecture medallion that was awarded from 1981 through 2016, when the last of the "feather bird" medallions was bestowed.

Having used "American Helicopter Society" with "International" as far back as 1977, and used words like "The Society for Vertical Flight" as far back as 1969, the Society began calling itself “An International Vertical Flight Organization” in 1992.

Most profound, however, was when the Society unofficially changed the name to “AHS International” in 1997 with the tagline “The Vertical Flight Society.” Hovey's feathers were trimmed again with the new logo, which also went digital for the first time, and assumed her now iconic shape.

A wide variety of color schemes and accents were used during the 2000s by Kay Brackins, who was serving as the AHS Art Director at the time.

2016 Avenir logo

In 2016, to emphasize that AHS was far beyond helicopters, the tagline "The Vertical Flight Technical Society" was appended to the logo and used into 2018. The colors were also corrected to the official Pantone colors of the US flag.

The Vertical Flight Society

Vertical Flight Society logo (small stacked)

The new logo, designed by VFS staff member Randy Johnson, was unveiled in April 2018, with this explanation in Vertiflite , May/June 2018 issue:

The colors of the AHS logo have long been the red, white and blue of the American flag, signifying the heritage of the Society; these colors are retained in the new logo. The hummingbird, named “Hovey” decades ago, endures as the symbol of vertical flight and of the Society; she also remains outlined in yellow to evoke the gold fringe and eagle that embellish the flag. The name of the Society is also in blue, providing an enduring bond with the vertical flight capabilities of the hummingbird. Finally, the red arc depicts the tip path of rotating blades that generate lift or thrust — the quintessential essence of technology that defines the domain of the Vertical Flight Society.
