Air India flying with pets

What is air india’s policy on pet acceptance.

Air India accepts a wide variety of pets on board, both as carry-on and checked baggage . Cats, dogs, household birds and other pets can travel with Air India only if they are properly crated, and all the necessary documentation is provided by their owners.

However, in order to travel accompanied by your pet, you must have the carrier’s prior approval, and also comply with its regulations.

What conditions apply for acceptance of pets on Air India flights?

The regulations of the country of destination are the main criterion based on which it is decided what animals are transported as carry-on baggage and what as checked baggage. The carriage of pets on certain routes and to/from certain destinations must be in accordance with the following regulations:

  • On flights to/from the United Kingdom and Germany, no live animals are not accepted , either in the cabin or as checked baggage. This also includes Service Animals.
  • On flights to the UAE , live animals are accepted for carriage only as cargo .
  • Live birds are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage , when transiting Middle East . On flights from India to the Gulf, pets may be allowed on board only if registered as checked baggage.
  • No pets are accepted on Air India non-stop flights on the US – India route . Service Dogs are the only exception to the rule. They can accompany their owners in the cabin.

Besides being properly crated, pets must have all the necessary documentation in good order when flying with Air India. The pet must be accompanied by its valid health and vaccination certificates (usually vaccination against rabies), all the mandatory entry permits , as well as all the other documents specifically required by the countries of entry, exit or transit.

All the governmental customs and health requirements (including quarantine procedures upon arrival at the destination) are solely the owner’s responsibility, who must inquire for all this information well in advance of the journey. Should the animal be quarantined at the destination, the owner will have to cover all the expenses. The airline has absolutely no influence over the quarantine period established by the veterinary authorities of the country of destination for your pet. The pet’s owner is the only one responsible for making all the necessary quarantine arrangements.

Regardless of the size of your pet or its container, all animals travelling with Air India are not considered part of the free baggage allowance, being charged at the excess baggage rates . Furthermore, only two animals per aircraft (including Service Dogs) are permitted, so make sure to contact the airline in advance and ensure there is room available for your pet on a specific flight.

Air India will not be held responsible should your pet be denied entry into or passage through a territory, nor if the pet suffers any injury, sickness or even death during a flight (due to its health condition, improper caging etc.). Moreover, the passenger must provide the airline with a declaration of indemnity.

Carry-on Pets

Pets can be transported in the passenger cabin under the following conditions:

  • The total weight (pet together with their container) does not exceed 5 kg (11 lbs) .
  • The pet is carried in soft ventilated bag or kennel .
  • The kennel measures maximum 18 x 18 x 12 in (45 x 45 x 30 cm) .
  • The additional charge is paid.

When the above-mentioned weight or size is exceeded, the pet must be checked and transported in the cargo hold of the aircraft.

Should you desire to travel accompanied by your animal companion in the passenger cabin, you must make this request specifically at the time of the booking. If the airline gives its consent, the staff will offer you all the necessary details regarding the formalities you will have to complete and the procedures you will have to follow.

Checked Pets

When the weight of your pet and its kennel exceeds 5 kg (11 lbs) , it will be transported in the cargo hold of the aircraft. The container in which your pet will be held during the flight must be properly ventilated and proportional to the animal’s dimensions and weight.

Pets are not considered part of the free checked baggage allowance and will be charged as excess baggage . Air India will collect the additional charge even if the passenger has no other baggage .

Service Animals

Visually or hearing impaired passengers may travel accompanied by their Service Animals, provided they can bring medical proof of their dependence. Assistive animals are carried free of charge and can be brought in the passenger cabin . However, it is recommended to contact the airline in advance and make all the necessary arrangements, since only two animals, including pets, and only one Service Dog are permitted per flight .

Service Dogs required to assist the blind or deaf are accepted on non-stop flights operated by Air India on the US – India route .

When travelling in the cabin, Service Dogs must be properly harnessed; they are not allowed to occupy a seat. Although they benefit from special treatment, Service Animals must also have all their documents in good order before embarking a flight.

All about air Indias pet policy on international flights

Foreign trips are the best way to discover new places. They help the traveler gather a broader perspective and worldview he is unaware of. Regarding traveling, each traveler has his own likes and dislikes, means and ways, and penchant for things. Each one has his own different travel itinerary. There are certain prerequisites that need to be completed before planning a holiday or a visit to a foreign country. And if ever a pet accompanies the person, another dimension to travel is added. The passenger needs to take into consideration the travel expenses of a dog or a cat on an international flight. Air India has a dedicated pet policy regarding carrying pets aboard flights from USA to India . There are certain do’s and don’ts that one needs to adhere to while flying with pets.

Traveling plans with a pet?

The work profile of the people or professional requirements demands a trip within a country or sometimes to a foreign country as well. People travel alone sometimes and sometimes with loved ones and friends as well. Each type of travel entails a different set of planning that is required before a scheduled visit. And travel planning and the procedure take a whole new dimension when one intends to travel with a pet to a foreign destination.

READ ALSO: Important Points To Consider Before Flying With Your Pet To India

It is often time-consuming to go through the instructions issued by different airlines regarding Pet travel policies but in the end it is necessary that you read and follow diligently the pet travel policy of the airlines. The owner of the pet is often bothered with the queries such as the safety of the pet during the flight, the paperwork that is required, the cost of air travel with the pet. It is immaterial whether one is traveling by air India, Lufthansa or Etihad or any other carrier, one should always adhere to the pet traveling policy.

It is of paramount importance to understand the pet policy of the airlines. If a pet is accompanying you and you wish to travel by Air India on your flight tickets to India then this article is for you. You need to complete certain documentation and paperwork beforehand for the transportation of dogs or cats, as it involves a very tedious process. One needs to comply with the stipulated regulations by reading the airline’s pet policy thoroughly.

How should I travel with my pet on flights from USA to India ? Can a pet be taken to Air India? Is the pet comfortable and safe in the ecosystem of the flight? These are some of the questions that bother travelers who wish to carry pets on flights along with them. Air India strictly enforces rules and procedures in its international pet policy.

There are two types of policies that Air India has, one is the policy for the carriage of pets on domestic flights and another is the policy for the carriage of pets on international flights.

The policies are discussed here for your hassle and tension-free travel with your pet

  • The pets should be in a proper crate and should be having valid health and vaccination certificates. Air India allows pets that meet the standards, including dogs, cats, and household birds, on its international flights.
  • The policy for the carriage of pets on international flights states that the carrier will provisionally accept entry permits and other required documents for entry or transit, subject to the carrier’s norms and regulations.
  • Passengers who want to export or import pets as part of their baggage to or from India must adhere to regulations.
  • The animal quarantine and certification service(AQCS) in India provide a no-objection certificate or pre-import clearance in case one wishes to travel with the pet. It is mandatory that the passengers obtain these certificates from the body concerned even before the onset of their travel plan.

The below-given information is of paramount importance to supplement your understanding of Air India’s travel policy about pets.

There is one more important point and restriction even if a passenger has obtained the clearance and permission certificates from the Animal quarantine and certification service(AQCS) in India. The restriction allows transportation of pets only from the following six airports, and not from any other destination. The airports are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Air India’s pet policy states that you can only enter and exit pets from these airports.

The pet policy requires passengers to ensure that they properly crate their pets and have a health certificate issued by the country of origin. The health certificate is mandatory because it is proof that the pet is free from infectious and contagious diseases such as rabies and leptospirosis. When the pet owner has complied with all the rules and procedures pertaining to the pet carriage policy only then the airline staff will facilitate the transport of the pet.

  • Flights from the USA to India allow a maximum of two pets or animals as checked baggage. Each aircraft permits one service dog with appropriate health documentation and a no-objection certificate, and all flights adhere to this rule.
  • Normally, a pet or animal must receive mandatory rabies vaccination within the last 12 months before the scheduled flight. If pets are less than one year old, the vaccination must occur within the month before the flight schedule.
  • You should clearly mention the pet owner’s name on the health certificate, and it should match the name details on the air tickets to establish ownership. Moreover, the passenger’s booking reference should state that he/she will travel with the pet.
  • Please bear in mind that the carriage of the pet will not fall under the free baggage allowance even if the passenger might not have any other baggage except for guide/service dogs. Moreover, the pet owner needs to pay an additional charge for the pet they are transporting. The charges are based on the rule of weight. The more the weight more the charges. Count the weight of the pet, including the container and carried food items, as the total weight for pricing purposes.

You can bring a trained service dog into the cabin as a pet, provided it wears a muzzle, remains leashed, and carries complete documentation regarding pet import regulations. Furthermore, the above process requires approval from the flight’s captain. Air India’s staff will not be responsible if they refuse entry to the pet into the passage.

Lastly, Air India doesn’t have any provision to transport emotional support animals on its flight. Another important point to note: Airlines do not allow the transport of pets in the cabin on ultra long haul flights. A deaf or blind person may bring a service dog into the cabin for companionship and assistance.

Tripbeam hopes that the above article has cleared out the ambiguous air surrounding the pet policy of Air India and now you can plan accordingly in case you wish to take your pet with you.

Airlines in India that Allow Pets on Board

If you have a pet, chances are you are familiar with the dilemma one faces when forced to choose between out-of-station travel and leaving their pet behind. Whatever the reason may be, the reality is you will eventually have to step away from home and leave your pet behind. Doing so is not an easy task, especially if you are someone who lives by yourself or someone who cannot trust someone else with their pet. This is not to say services for such a situation are not available. Pet boardings and pet hostel facilities are available in most metropolitan cities, but it is difficult to convince a pet parent to opt for such a facility, especially if they are a first-time pet owner or don’t trust such facilities. Another option is to take your pet with you on your trip. For someone who does not want their pet with a stranger or alone, this is a great option; even more so if your stay will be a lengthy one. Flying alongside your pet sounds wonderful, but you may be wondering whether it is possible, and what the rules, requirements, and costs for such a trip may be. The good news is that pets can fly with owners in India, with a multitude of airlines being pet-friendly.

Pet-Friendly Airlines in India

Once upon a time, the only pet-friendly airline providers operating within India were Air India and SpiceJet. The majority of pet-friendly airlines provided international pet relocations but not domestic ones. Now, most major airlines have provisions for pet travel, albeit with a few terms and conditions which must be satisfied. While one of the two original service providers has shut down pet travel provisions (SpiceJet), numerous others now allow pets to travel on board, with a few conditions. Jet Airways will allow pets to fly on board, but they must travel in the cargo hold. Other airlines permit service animals to travel; Airlines like IndiGo, AirAsia, and Vistara all permit service animals so they may assist their owners. Air India is still the airline offering the most inclusive pet travel experience, as they allow pets to travel in the cargo hold as well as the cabin (provided your pet’s carrier fits under the seat). Do note that the final permission to get your pet on board is subject to the approval of the flight commander of your specific flight.

Pet Policy for Flying on Domestic Airlines

While the rules for domestic pet travel via flights are not cumbersome, they cannot be ignored, and failure to fulfil any of the rules/requirements means the airline can prohibit your pet from flying.

Here are the guidelines for pet travel in India:

Size of Pet Carrier

If your pet is travelling with you inside the cabin, their soft bag/carrier dimensions must not exceed 18” x 18” x 12” (Length x Width x Height). As for weight, the limit for in-cabin pet carriers is a maximum of 5 Kg.  Pets that exceed these limits are not eligible for in-cabin travel and must travel in the cargo hold. Pets travelling in the cargo hold must travel inside an IATA-approved fibre pet crate . A label must be affixed to the crate showing the name of the pet. Along with this, a moisture-absorbent mat must be placed inside the crate.

Pet Travel Criteria

Your pet dog/cat must be at least eight weeks old before they can travel. Pets who are pregnant are not eligible for travel.  A maximum of two pets are permitted in-cabin per flight, being accommodated on the last rows of Business Class and Economy Class respectively. Passengers must accompany their pets.  Pet dogs must be muzzled or leashed. Pets or guide dogs will not be allowed to take up a passenger’s seat. Pets are accepted on board at the owner’s risk, and the airline will not be responsible if a pet is refused boarding.  Pets must be accompanied by a health certificate and vaccination record (pet passport). The pet owner is responsible for complying with government rules and regulations, including health and safety requirements.  The pet owner must sign an indemnification form before they can fly with their pet, and must assume all risks of injury, sickness, or death of the pet before travelling.  Pets travelling on flights will carry an additional charge and are not covered under the free baggage allowance. Normal excess baggage charges are applicable for pets travelling domestically in India, with the weight of the container, the weight of the pet, and the weight of food inside the crate being chargeable.

A New Pet Friendly Airline

In October 2022, a newcomer joined the ever-growing list of pet-friendly airline providers in India. Akasa Air is now the second pet-friendly airline in India and allows pets to travel in-cabin and in the cargo hold. Since its inception, Akasa has received acclaim for its pet-friendly services, and the number of pets travelling with their owners continues to grow daily. Akasa Air has also released a pet policy for those interested in flying with their pets. Akasa allows pets weighing under 7Kg to travel in-cabin with the passenger, while those weighing between 7-32Kg must be checked in as baggage once passengers have passed through security. The weight criteria include the weight of the pet crate. For pets weighing over 32 kg, Crate size should not exceed 28 x 28 x 36 (inches). The container should be large enough to permit the pet to stand properly, turn around and lie down.  The usual documentation is required, meaning that passengers must be accompanied with their pet’s health certificate, vaccination record, and further certificated (if applicable).  Pets are typically allowed to travel on board flights in India, barring a few exceptions. For instance, snub nosed (brachycephalic) breeds of dogs and cats are tricky to fly, as their natural physique makes it difficult for them to breathe & regulate their body temperature, so make sure to call your airline and inquire about your pet before flying.  With the number of pet parents growing in the country, it is no surprise to see airlines opening up the skies for domestic pet transportation in the country. Pets are akin to family in the modern family unit and deserve to be treated as such. To conclude, while the country has pet-friendly airlines aplenty, these services will only continue to improve with time and usage, until travelling with your pet is as convenient as travelling with another person.

Flying with your pet? Here are the guidelines you should follow

 alt=

If a pet person is planning to fly out, the first concern would be whether their dear animals or birds could be carried onboard with them. The good news is that your pets won’t have to be ‘Home Alone’ as they can indeed fly with you but certain mandatory procedures have to be followed. The following are the guidelines for transporting pets on Air India flights. The requirements of other airlines are slightly different and therefore, you should refer to the individual airline's latest policies before deciding to travel with your pets. For example, Emirates brackets pets as check-in baggage and are transported only in the cargo compartment of the aircraft. Here is what you should know:

1) A no objection certificate (NOC) is mandatory to transport pets from and to India. The requisite NOC can be pocketed from the Office of Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS). 2) The pets could be transported only through the Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai airports. Moreover, the pets could be transported only through the airport from where the AQCS office issued the NOC.

3) It is mandatory to carry a veterinary doctor’s certificate mentioning that the pet has been properly vaccinated and is free from diseases such as rabies, canine distemper and rat fever. Anti-rabies vaccination is a must for dogs and cats that are three months or older. The vaccination should be administered one month before the date of the journey. 4) The cage used to carry pets should be soft and well-ventilated. The kennels for dogs should not exceed 46cmx18cmx46cm.

5) If the pet is below 5kg, it can travel in the cabin and if it weighs between 5kg and 32kg, the pet is considered as checked-in baggage. The pets weighing over 32kg are transported as cargo. 6) Pregnant pets and pets below the age of eight weeks are not allowed to fly.

7) Only two pets are allowed in the cabin at a time and they cannot occupy passenger seats. 8) Dogs that are trained to guide visually challenged passengers and assist travellers with special needs can travel free of charge. All other pets need a ticket to travel according to their age and the weight of the cage.

9) The pets may be put in quarantine in the destination country and requisite documents for that should be kept handy. 10) Keep in mind that the rules regulating the transportation of pets vary from country to country. 11) Though Oman allows the import of pets, they are not allowed onboard long-haul flights via Oman.

12) Pet animals and birds can be transported to most of the Gulf countries from India but feathered friends are not allowed onboard long-haul flights transiting through West Asia. 13) Pet animals and birds cannot be transported to the UK under any circumstances.

Carrying Pets on Domestic Flights in India: A Comprehensive Guide

  • 1 Airlines’ Pet Policies
  • 2 Pre-Flight Preparations
  • 3 On the Day of Travel
  • 4 During the Flight
  • 5 Post-Flight Care

Traveling with pets on domestic flights in India has become increasingly common as more people want to include their furry friends in their travel plans. Understanding the rules and regulations for flying with pets within India is crucial for a smooth and stress-free journey . This article provides a detailed guide on how to navigate the process of taking your pets on domestic flights in India. Traveling with a pet in India is easier than you might think.

India Airport

On Air India, pets are permitted in the cabin. However, for other airlines such as Jet Airways, Indigo , and SpiceJet, pets are not allowed in the cabin but can travel in the baggage compartment. Be aware of certain restrictions, especially regarding the age of the pet, as the oxygen level in the baggage compartment is lower. These airlines may refuse travel to ensure the safety of younger animals.

Planning to fly with your dog or cat? Ensure you have all your pet’s documents ready for travel. Give yourself ample time before the journey to manage your pet’s necessary medical treatments and documentation. It’s important to begin this process well in advance.

Airlines vary in their policies regarding pet travel. Depending on the airline, your pet might be allowed to travel in the cabin or in the cargo hold of your flight. It’s crucial to verify these details with your airline in advance.

Certain airlines prohibit pet travel entirely, while others have stringent requirements for rabies vaccinations. Ensure you have all necessary paperwork and vaccination proof ready before your departure.

When it comes to transporting pets on domestic Indian flights, there are several requirements that the owner needs to fulfil.

Airlines’ Pet Policies

Different airlines in India have varying policies regarding pet travel. It’s essential to check with the specific airline before booking your ticket. Generally, most airlines allow small pets like cats and dogs on domestic flights, subject to certain conditions.

Air India permits pets on board, but they must be carried in approved kennels and placed in the cargo hold. The airline also has specific breed, size, and weight restrictions.

Domestic Air India flights allow small pets such as cats, dogs, and birds, but it’s crucial to obtain approval from the flight commander before your pet can travel with you. Transporting your pet, whether furry or feathered, is at your own risk. Additionally, you are required to have a valid health and rabies vaccination certificate for your pet.

IndiGo allows pets, but only in the cargo hold. They require pets to be in a leak-proof, lockable container or carrier.

Indigo Airlines does not permit pets to be carried in the aircraft cabin.

SpiceJet also accommodates pets but under specific conditions and fees. Pets must be carried in an IATA-approved container and booked in advance.

Pets are not permitted to be carried on-board SpiceJet flights. However, they are permitted to be carried in the cargo hold on domestic flights.

Pre-Flight Preparations

Health check-up.

Ensure your pet is healthy enough to travel. A visit to the vet for a check-up is advisable. Obtain a health certificate, which is often required by airlines.

Book your flight well in advance and inform the airline that you will be traveling with a pet. Understand the costs involved as airlines charge an additional fee for transporting pets.

Crate Training

Get your pet accustomed to staying in a crate. This is crucial as pets need to be in a crate during the flight.

How to get your pet accustomed to staying in a crate

dog

Getting your pet accustomed to staying in a crate is an important step, especially if you plan to travel with them. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help your pet become comfortable with a crate:

  • Choose the Right Crate : Select a crate that is large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Ensure it’s well-ventilated and safe.
  • Introduce the Crate : Place the crate in a common area where your pet spends a lot of time. Keep the crate door open and let your pet explore it on their own. You can encourage exploration by placing treats or toys near and inside the crate.
  • Create Positive Associations : Make the crate a pleasant place. Place comfortable bedding inside, along with favorite toys and treats. Feed your pet near the crate initially, then inside it to create a positive association.
  • Gradual Acclimation : Encourage your pet to spend more time in the crate. Start with short periods while you’re home. Use a command like “crate time” and guide them in with a treat. Gradually increase the time they spend in the crate.
  • Praise and Reward : Every time your pet enters the crate, praise them and offer a treat. This reinforces crate time as a positive experience.
  • Practice Closing the Door : Once your pet is comfortable spending time in the crate, start practicing with the door closed. Begin with a few minutes and gradually increase the time. Always stay nearby at first.
  • Increase Alone Time : As your pet gets used to the crate, you can start leaving them in it when you step out for short periods. This helps them understand that it’s safe to be in the crate even when you’re not around.
  • Overnight Stays : If your pet is comfortable, try letting them sleep in the crate overnight. This can help them get used to longer periods, especially useful for travel.
  • Consistency : Consistency is key. Make the crate a regular part of your pet’s routine.
  • Never Use the Crate for Punishment : It’s crucial that the crate is never used as a place of punishment. It should always be a safe, positive space.

Remember, every pet is different and may take varying lengths of time to get comfortable with a crate. Patience and positive reinforcement are key. If your pet shows signs of distress, slow down the process and consult a veterinarian or a pet behaviorist for guidance.

On the Day of Travel

Arriving early.

Arrive at the airport earlier than usual. This gives you ample time to complete any additional paperwork and helps your pet acclimatize to the environment.

Feed your pet a few hours before the flight to avoid any discomfort during the journey.

Documentation

Carry all necessary documentation, including health certificates and vaccination records.

During the Flight

Pets are usually transported in the cargo hold. Ensure that your pet’s crate is secure, comfortable, and labeled with your contact information. Some airlines may allow smaller pets in the cabin, but this is rare in India.

Post-Flight Care

Once you arrive at your destination, immediately check on your pet. Provide them with water and a chance to relieve themselves.

Are pets allowed in domestic flights in India?

cat

Yes, nearly all commercial airlines in India allow pets on board. Pets traveling on flights incur extra charges and are not included in the standard free baggage allowance. When traveling domestically within India, the typical excess baggage fees apply to pets. This includes the combined weight of the pet, the container, and any food inside the crate.

Travelling with pets on domestic flights in India requires careful planning and adherence to airline policies. By preparing in advance and understanding the requirements, you can ensure a safe and comfortable journey for you and your pet. Always prioritize your pet’s well-being and consult with your airline for any specific concerns or requirements related to pet travel .

  • Excess baggage fees are applicable for transporting pets, based on the total weight of the pet, its container, and any food supplies.
  • The pet’s kennel will be marked with its name and should contain a moisture-absorbent mat inside.
  • Pets are transported in pressurized, temperature-controlled settings to ensure their comfort. Specifically, on Boeing aircraft, the temperature is adjusted for their well-being.
  • Skilled personnel manage the handling of all animals, and this service is accessible at all airports serviced by Boeing flights.
  • Some destinations impose restrictions on specific animal breeds, so pet owners need to consult with the station in-charge prior to making their reservations.

Did Air India wrongly refuse dog on flight: What are the rules for flying pets?

A row erupted at Bengaluru airport when Sachin Shenoy said that his pet dog, Fluffy, wasn’t allowed on board an Air India flight despite having a boarding pass. The airline said that they were following their policies. But what exactly should people keep in mind to fly their pets?

Did Air India wrongly refuse dog on flight: What are the rules for flying pets?

For the Shenoy family, it wasn’t doggie’s day out!

A much-anticipated 12-day holiday for a Bengaluru man and his family went awry on 17 December when an Air India pilot refused to allow their poodle on board the flight, despite them having secured all the necessary permissions and even getting a boarding pass for ‘Fluffy’.

Recounting their ordeal, Sachin Shenoy, an HR professional, said through a Twitter video that he and his family — wife Uma and daughter Aarya and their poodle, Fluffy — were heading for a 12-day vacation from Bengaluru to Delhi and onwards to Amritsar on Flight AI 503. “We were in constant touch with Air India regarding flying our pet dog, Fluffy, with them, as per the rules and procedures laid down by the airlines,” he said.

“Our pet weighs 4.2 kg and with the bag she is hardly five kg heavy. As per the rules, she can fly inside the cabin. She got all checks done and was issued a boarding pass,” he said in the video. Shenoy added that Fluffy remained patient through the waiting time and in fact, was petted by nearly 250 people at the airport.

Shenoy further says in the video, “The pilot, Captain Chopra, denied entry to us or that is what was told to us,” adding that they were informed the flight was overbooked. “We were told that you can leave your pet and go… It is as good as leaving your kid and flying.”

After being called out by many to be ‘anti-pet’, Air India, now owned by the Tata Group, responded on social media by saying, “Sir, we love our furry friends as much as you do. Our Bengaluru Airport team had extended all support to ensure your Fluffy could fly with us on board.”

The airline further added that “the commander of the flight was not fully satisfied with the cage and muzzle of the pet” and hence they were not allowed to board. “Our laid-down policy for the carriage of pets on domestic flights clearly mentions that “pet carriage is subject to the approval of the commander of the flight.”

However, the Commander of the flight was not fully satisfied with the cage and muzzle of the pet which is why he could not allow it to be carried in the cabin. 2/n — Air India (@airindia) December 17, 2022

So, what exactly are the rules for flying pets in India? Which airlines allow it — domestically and internationally?

Can pets be flown?

In short, the answer to this question is a yes. In addition to pets, service animals, sporting animals, agricultural animals for breeding, food animals being transported for slaughter, zoological animals and species can also be flown.

According to most airlines, the most commonly transported animals by all airlines remain cats, dogs, birds, live lobsters and crabs, chicks, horses and some zoo animals such as wolves, leopards, cheetahs, etc.

Among dogs, brachycephalic or snub-nosed breeds such as a pug, French bulldgog, a boxer, an English bulldog, a Boston terrier, a Lhasa Apso, a Shih Tzu cannot be transported by air due to issues involved with their breathing. This is because snub-nosed breeds are far more susceptible to heat exhaustion and breathing abnormalities, which can be exacerbated by air travel.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), giraffes are the only animals that cannot be transported by air.

Which airlines allow pets?

In India as of date, Air India was the first to allow domestic pets such as dogs, cats and birds on board in the cabin or as checked-in baggage depending on the regulations of the country of destination. In October, the new Akasa Air announced that it would let passengers bring along “domesticated dogs and cats” on their flights from 1 November.

SpiceJet does not permit the carriage of any animal on any of their flights unless it is a service animal accompanying a disabled passenger.

IndiGo and Vistara allow only guide dogs, whereas AirAsia India allows other service animals on its 15 flights in India.

Internationally, airlines such as American Airlines, JetBlue, Air Canada, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM among others permit animals on board.

According to a recently-published report, American Airlines was judged the best airline for pet travel in the United States.

Rules to remember

For pet-owners, there are several rules and regulations to keep in mind and follow.

Air India has a long list of dos and don’ts for pet owners. As per their website, “small inoffensive domestic pets such as dogs, cats and birds, accompanied by valid health and rabies vaccination certificates, will be accepted on Air India domestic flights in the cabin or in cargo.”

#FlyAI : Please click on the link https://t.co/QQfiKRcw2z for all your queries related to special needs like wheelchair, medical facilities required etc. pic.twitter.com/gkuBnMaqKo — Air India (@airindia) June 29, 2021

As per their rules, the flight commander must approve the carriage of the pet and only two pets are allowed per flight. Moreover, their owner will be seated in the last row of their cabin.

Air India has stipulated that pets must be carried in soft ventilated bags/kennel not exceeding 18” x 18” x 12” dimensions. For carrying a pet in the cabin, the weight of the pet, including the container should not exceed five kilogram.

Additionally, pets of larger size/weight will be carried in the cargo hold. Dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks of age to travel. Pregnant pets will not be accepted. The pet must be muzzled and leashed, and cannot occupy a passenger seat at any time.

Air India has stated that pets will be carried at an additional charge. However, a trained guide dog when properly muzzled and leashed and with health/vaccination certificate, may be carried free of charge if the dog is trained to lead the a passenger with impaired vision/hearing and the passenger is dependent on such dog.

Akasa Air also has its own rules to fly pets on board. According to the airline, the pet can fly in the aircraft cabin if it weighs less than seven kg. A pet heavier than 32 kg needs to be sent via the cargo terminal.

Additionally, pet owners will have to carry valid health, rabies vaccination, licence and other certificates as stipulated by the regulations.

When it comes to international travel, all the above rules apply and the owner must present other documents required by countries of entry and/or transit.

Is air travel safe for pets?

Experts and veterinarians note that air travel is stressful and dangerous for animals. They have noted that conditions in the cargo hold of commercial jets are not always friendly; temperatures can fluctuate wildly, noise can be tremendous and air pressure can drop significantly, and pets that are checked into this dark space beneath the passenger cabin sometimes die.

Kirsten Theisen, director of pet care issues for the Humane Society of the United States, told the Smithsonian that air travel is simply too stressful for most animals, especially when they are placed in an aircraft’s cargo hold.

“Flying is frightening for animals,” says Theisen. “They can sense the pressure changing and they can tell that something is happening, and that’s scary. Flying is frightening if you don’t know what’s happening.”

A Forbes report in 2021 said that according to HonestPaws, 250 animal ‘passengers’ died either during or immediately after airline travel between 2010 and 2020. Another 170 sustained injuries, while 20 animals were actually lost by airlines.

Experts state that if a person is returning home soon, they should leave their pet at home and look forward to a happy reunion of wagging tails and hearty purrs.

  • Fit at your feet, under your seat, or in your lap (lap animals must be smaller than a two year old child)

Service dogs must not:

  • Be seated in an exit row
  • Protrude into or block aisles
  • Occupy a seat

Additionally,

  • Final approval for travel will be confirmed at the airport only after direct verification that your service animal will safely fit at your feet.
  • For flights on partner airlines, travellers are required to contact the partner airline directly and complete all the necessary forms and documents for travelling with a service animal.
  • Rebook a flight with more open seats.
  • Buy extra seats for the animal to ensure it is well accommodated on the aircraft. However, the service animal cannot occupy a passenger seat.
  • Transport the animal as a checked pet, free of charge.

Animal behaviour guidelines

Service dogs must undergo proper training to ensure they behave appropriately at the airport or in the air. They won’t be permitted in the cabin if they display any form of disruptive behaviour that can’t be successfully corrected or controlled, including but not limited to:

  • Running freely
  • Barking or growling repeatedly
  • Biting or attempting to bite
  • Jumping on or lunging at people
  • Urinating or defecating

If this behaviour is observed at any point during your journey and isn't corrected or controlled, the animal will be considered a pet and not a service dog. Under these circumstances, all requirements and applicable fees will apply.

Flying with a service animal on US-bound flights

As per the US Department of Transportation, Air India recognises a dog as a service animal that is allowed to assist a qualified passenger with special needs on flights to or from the United States.

Psychiatric service animal

Air India permits a fully trained psychiatric service dog to assist a qualified individual with a disability on direct flights to or from the US. As per the regulations of the US Department of Transportation, only a dog is recognised as a psychiatric service animal.

Please note that a passenger is limited to two psychiatric service dogs on US-bound flights.

Required paperwork for flights to and from the US

For flights to and from the US, passengers travelling with a service dog must provide completed forms required by the US Department of Transportation.

We request that passengers submit completed forms up to 48 hours before their flight. If you purchased your ticket less than 48 hours before your departure time, you may complete the forms at the airport.

  • Service Animal Air Transportation Form (PDF) Complete this form from the US Department of Transportation to attest to your animal’s health, training, and behaviour.
  • Service Animal Relief Attestation Form (PDF) For flights over 8 hours long, complete this additional form from the US Department of Transportation stating your animal doesn’t need to relieve itself or can do so in a way that doesn’t create a health or sanitation issue. If required, please bring enough absorbent mats for the service animal to relieve itself.

US CDC suspension for high-risk countries

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a temporary suspension of dog imports, including service dogs, travelling to the US from countries considered high-risk countries .

Documentation required

To enter the US along with your service dog, in addition to the two standard DOT forms on service animals, which are:

  • Service Animal Air Transportation Form (PDF)
  • Service Animal Relief Attestation Form (PDF)

You will have to provide documentation to comply with the requirements regarding the transport of animals by a Federal agency, US territory, or a foreign jurisdiction.

Refusal of carriage of a service dog for non-compliance

  • Air India may refuse to transport service animals if it violates any applicable health and safety regulations of the US, a US state or territory, or a foreign government.
  • The current CDC suspension on the transportation of dogs from India allows Air India to refuse to carry service dogs that the suspension would bar.

The Cost of Pet Transportation by Air in India (Rules & Formalities)

Blog Image

Pet Transportation by Air: An Overview

  • The necessary documentation must be prepared to ensure pets travel legally and safely.
  • The pet must be healthy and tested to be well-prepared to travel in a suitable airline-approved carrier.
  • For the pet’s safety, it’s important to set up door-to-door ground pick-up and delivery services.

The Various Financial Factors Involved

  • Pet details: You’ll need to provide the airlines with specific information about your pet, such as breed, age, microchip details, etc.
  • Flights: The flight duration must be carefully considered. Traveling north to south, coast-to-coast and long-haul flights can become highly expensive.
  • Pet types: The type of pet will also make a difference in the cost, with smaller pets typically needing less space than larger ones.
  • Air carriers and airlines deposits: Air carriers and airlines have different rates and costs, which will always vary, so it’s wise to shop around. In some cases, you may need to pay a deposit when making the booking.
  • Food: Ensuring the pet is well-fed is also an important factor, and you may need to purchase food-friendly containers to keep the food safe and palatable.
  • Crate: This is the cost of the container or the pet-carrying box, which must be of the correct dimensions and suitable for the flight.
  • Health certifications and taxes: Health certifications may also need to be obtained, and you’ll have to factor in any applicable taxes.
  • Additional documents: If you’re crossing borders, you’ll likely need additional documents for a smooth process.
  • Optional added services: Finally, there may be additional services that you would like to consider, such as door-to-door pick-up, depending on your location and the needs of your pet.

The Legalities of Pet Travel

  • Regulatory Clearance: One must first obtain animal quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS) permission before flying with a pet in certain parts of India.
  • Government-Authorized Vets: Pets must be certified by a government-authorized vet before travel.
  • Health Certificates: Health certificates issued by the vet must be presented at points of departure and arrival when traveling with a pet.
  • Breed Restrictions: Certain potentially dangerous breeds specified by the government are prohibited from air travel in India.
  • Documentation: Gather all necessary documents such as health certificates, vaccination records, and an export permit from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) as required by the airlines in India.
  • Contact the vet: Contact your veterinarian and ask for an examination to ensure your pet is fit to travel.
  • Prepare for the trip: Choose the right pet carrier for your pet, and United Airlines’ state-of-the-art pet travel program will help you navigate the process of flying with your pet from the USA/Canada to India.
