How to get there.

Located in the middle of Honshu, Nagoya is a key transportation hub. Bullet trains there take only 35 and 50 minutes from Kyoto and Osaka, respectively, and an hour and 40 minutes from Tokyo. Aichi hosts two airports, with Nagoya Airport mostly handling domestic flights and Centrair, international travel.

Well served by JR and private railways such as Meitetsu, Aichi Prefecture offers a robust transport network and convenient train and bus access to neighboring prefectures such as Gifu and Mie. Private and highway buses are cheaper options for those traveling from major cities.

The city of Seto near Nagoya is home to one of Japan’s six ancient kilns known as Akazu. A variety of ceramics are produced here, using different glazing techniques such as Shino, Oribe and Kiseto, ranging from pure white to brightly colored. Miso Nikomi Udon

A Nagoya specialty, this flavorful dish begins with an umami-rich fish-based broth. Soy sauce, sweet cooking sake, and red miso are then added, and it is within this soup that the thick, chewy udon noodles are cooked. Tokoname Ware

Tokoname yaki is a natural ash glazed stoneware made in Tokoname, one of Japan’s ancient potting centers. The ceramic goods produced here range from architectural tiles and industrial pipes to storage pots and delicate teapots.

Arimatsu-Narumi Tie-Dyed Fabrics

Arimatsu-Narumi shibori is a tie-dyed textile dating back to the early 17th century. The stunning, complex patterns of indigo-dyed cotton made a popular souvenir available only along the Tokaido highway that connected the capital to Kyoto.

Top Things to Do in Aichi Prefecture: A Guide to Traveling in Central Japan

From temples to ninjas to robots, join the journey to the heart of Japan with GaijinPot in this video.

Located in the heart of Japan is a prefecture that is at once forwardly futuristic and richly historic: Aichi. 

An innovative hub of Japan’s manufacturing industries, Aichi is famously the home of transport, electric and general machinery production for the nation. At the same time, the prefecture is also known as Japan’s samurai homeland and was the central battle area during the Sengoku Jidai , a period of almost continuous military conflict that lasted from the middle of the 15th to the beginning of the 17th centuries. Aichi is, in fact, the birthplace of many famous samurai heroes such as Oda Nobunaga , Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

The vibrant combination of Aichi’s past, present, and future is transparently evident as you travel around the stunning Okumikawa region—because, yes, it’s landscape is absolutely beautiful too.

For our three-day video trip we mainly explored Shinshiro City and Toyota City, historic regions where you can find spectacular natural landscapes and innovative museums. Those staying longer should include a couple of days in Nagoya too.

We took a plane from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport right into Chubu Centrair International Airport (approx. 1 hour). Flight costs from Haneda usually start at around ¥7,000 one way. Not only is the transport there convenient, affordable and swift; the airport itself is worth a visit as the world’s first airport to be certified with a 5-star rating! 

Chubu Centrair International Airport is located just outside of the city of  Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture . There are 465 flights per week between central Japan and more than 39 cities including Detroit, Helsinki, Frankfurt, and Abu Dhabi. So if you’re coming from overseas, you can fly to the very heart of Japan directly for around the same price as flying to Tokyo first.

From the airport, it’s easy to access to all the main cities in Japan by public transportation. However, for this trip around Okumikawa and Toyota, it’s recommended to rent a car to get around; Aichi is a large prefecture with many must-visit rural areas that are nonetheless a bit complicated to access with public transport.

Renting a car is a fun and easy way to enjoy the trip! The airport has very clear visual signs that take you right over to the rent-a-car area where you can be serviced in English. Just make sure you have a valid Japanese/international drivers license.

Another option for getting to Aichi Prefecture is to take the bullet train from Tokyo station to Nagoya station on the Tokaido-Sanyo line (approx. 1 hour 40 minutes). The one-way fare is ¥10,360 for a non-reserved seat and around ¥11,000 for a reserved seat.

Things to do in Shinshiro City and Toyota City, Aichi 

Try a vegan buddhist meal at ioji temple.

Said to have been built as a safe house during the battle of Nagashino in 1575, this Buddhist temple can be enjoyed from both inside and around the gardens. During lunchtime, they serve a vegan Buddhist meal, known as “ Shojin Ryori ” with ingredients centered around soy-based foods like tofu, along with seasonal vegetables and wild mountain plants.

See a thousand paddies at Yotsuya no Senmaida

At the foot of the 883-meter-high Mt. Kurakake are the terraced rice-growing fields made with walls of rocks, carefully placed in the same way that castle walls were constructed. It’s a truly incredible engineering feat from 400 years ago and an amazing sight to see.

Explore the “seven-layered” waterfall, Atera No Nanataki

The magnificent and mysterious seven-layered waterfall is well-known in Japan as a designated place of scenic beauty.  The last Sunday of July is annually celebrated here by the locals with the Atera-no-Nanataki Festival. The festival is a wonderful chance to witness the mysterious spiritual power of the falls through historic special rituals performed by locals. Stroll around the surrounding area and browse the shops for local produce and other goods, too.

Wander through the traditional town of Asuke

A traditional town made up of century-old local stores and buildings kindly invites visitors to enjoy a relaxing stroll along the path of history. During the summer seasons, the streets are lit up by locals with big lanterns, making it a popular date spot at night. In October they celebrate the Asuke Festival, where beautiful floats parade around the streets with young dancers aboard them.

Snap an aesthetic picture at Korankei

This forest by the river, with over 4,000 trees, is famous for beautifully painting the area with bright green leaves in spring and summer, white, snow-covered leaves in winter, and fiery red and yellow leaves in autumn. The latter is the most popular time to visit as the trees along the river are illuminated from sunset to 9 p.m.

As well as walking along the river, over bridges and capturing masterpieces with the camera, another popular activity you can do here is hiking the trails up Mt. Iimori which reaches to a height of around 254 meters.

Take a tour of Toyota Stadium

A free tour of the stadium, scheduled to host a few matches during the upcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup , is led by friendly locals. Wales vs. Georgia, South Africa vs. Namibia, Japan vs. Samoa and New Zealand vs. Italy will be the four matches held at this stadium in September and October. 

Unfortunately, the tour is only available in Japanese, however as the tour is more about exploring the stadium (including going down into the professional waiting rooms, wearing the uniforms and visiting the grounds themselves), you don’t necessarily need to understand Japanese to enjoy it.

Get behind the wheel at the Toyota Kaikan Museum

Learn about the ubiquitous car brand Toyota Motor Corporation’s history and values through a free tour of the museum and interactive exhibitions. As one of the most famous companies in the world, Toyota has been churning out cars since its founding in 1937 and is still going strong—9.6 million Toyota vehicles were sold in 2019. You can’t help but marvel at the innovation which is on full and interactive display here. 

Stay at The Ninja Mansion

What better way to finish a day full of fun than to stay in a 150-year-old traditional Japanese mansion with just you and your friends. Located 15 minutes away from Asuke Town in Toyota, this is a stay like no other. For dinner, you can enjoy a barbecue just out by the front porch of the house whilst watching the sun go down. And at night, if you organize it beforehand by stopping at a convenience store to buy a firework set ( ¥ 1,000), you can enjoy your own personal firework display with sparklers and more! Bedtime is a whole lot of fun where your futon beds get laid out and covered with special bug nets just like in the Studio Ghibli film favorite, Totoro .

As you could probably tell by our video, our three-day trip was very chilled whilst still highlighting Aichi’s beautiful must-dos. Our itinerary is doable by all; whether you’re a family with small children, in a couple, or with a group of friends, you’re guaranteed to have a memorable trip. 

From Chubu C entrair International Airport, go directly to the Toyota Rent-A-Car outside the exit. It’s recommended to book in advance but isn’t necessary as long as they have cars available. 

The drive from the airport into Shinshiro city takes about one and a half hours. The first stop is at Ioji temple. Take a look around at the beautiful gardens and magnificent interior of the main hall. The “ Shojin Ryori ” lunch is available here for ¥ 1,500.

After lunch, get back in the car and drive up north for 20 minutes to the Yotsuya no Senmaida, the thousand rice paddy field. This place is the ultimate photo spot, with the green rice fields running all the way up into the heavens. Take a peaceful walk around the paddies and surround yourself in nature and fresh air.

Continue your retreat to nature by heading over to the Atera No Nanataki waterfall, a 35-minute drive from Yotsuya no Senmaida. This waterfall is comprised of seven smaller waterfalls and is said to be Aichi’s magical scenic spot. The collection of stones found under the waterfall is called the “ Kodaki-ishi .” Apparently, the rocks are bestowed with the power to bring children to loving couples who visit.

Finish your day off by staying at Yunokaze Hazu (see below) and soaking in a glorious onsen (hot spring) by the river.

Day 2 of the Aichi trip starts with a one-hour drive over to Asuke Town in Toyota City , from Yunokaze Hazu. Begin by exploring the old streets of Asuke and the main promenade full of local shops which date back centuries. The locals here are all very friendly and love having a chat. 

Continue your walk over into Korankei, one of Aichi’s most famous sightseeing locations for autumn leaves. A walk through Korankei by the river will take you on a spectacular journey through the surroundings of beautiful maple trees, traditional bridges, old houses, and families playing along the river.

There are several stops you can take on the way where you can enjoy a meal or experience traditional handicrafts. 

For lunch, try the seasonal set menu at Ichinotani for ¥ 2,500, where you can enjoy a varied spread with a view of the maple forest and river. After lunch, head over to the Sanshu Asuke Yashiki and try out one of the traditional handicraft experiences, or watch how it’s done by the professionals. Experiences include weaving, straw crafts, paper making and more.

Finish the day off at one of the most unique and fulfilling stops of the trip, The Ninja Mansion. 

Be woken to the serene sound of local birds and frogs. Breakfast at The Ninja Mansion is the most peaceful way to start the day with a serving of local  Gohei Mochi rice cakes and a homemade yuzu citrus drink. 

At this point, you may just want to stay at the mansion forever, but the future’s calling! Day 3 is spent in Toyota City, Japan’s leading manufacturing and industrial hub, and the birthplace of the Toyota Motor Corporation. 

From the Ninja Mansion, drive 20 minutes over to Toyota Stadium, and enjoy a free tour of the stadium which will be hosting a number of matches during the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The tour is led by a number of local volunteers and takes you in and around the entire stadium. 

Just five minutes by car from the stadium is the contemporary Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, designed by world-famous architect, Yoshio Taniguchi—who was also behind the design of MoMa in New York—which presents multiple exhibitions, as well as educational and outreach activities. In addition to the art, the entirety of the museum can be enjoyed through the modern architecture and surrounding gardens.

Enjoy lunch in the city at the Cafe Concession, a prime location for a stylish lunch accompanied by an extensive drink menu with the very best craft beers, café drinks, and cocktails.  There are many other restaurant options around the Toyota Station area to choose from as well.

Once you’re refreshed and ready to go, head next to the Toyota Kaikan Museum where you will again be toured around the museum free of charge! At the Toyota Kaikan Museum, you’ll be able to explore Toyota’s approach to vehicles from a variety of perspectives through multiple interactive exhibitions, fun for both adults and children to see and try out.

If you still have time, it might be worth taking a short drive over to Toyota’s Ecoful Town where you can see how Toyota City aims to create a sustainable lifestyle for all by looking ahead 10-50 years in the future and focusing on new initiatives. 

The journey comes to an end back at the Centrair International Airport. The airport itself has a number of things to see and do, including a sky deck where you can get a picture-perfect view of the sun setting behind the arriving and departing planes in the late afternoon.

It’s a perfectly peaceful way to finish off the most relaxing and rewarding trip!

What to eat

Gohei mochi.

Gohei Mochi , unlike regular mochi, is made from white rice which has been smashed into a sticky cake and skewered. Before serving, the rice cake is coated in a sweet miso sauce and aromatically cooked over a flame.

Miso Katsu takes the classic tonkatsu (Japanese style deep-fried pork) and slathers it with an aromatic miso sauce that has a heavenly sweet and salty flavor. 

Tebasaki chicken wings

Tebasaki is a local favorite! It’s a Japanese style spicy chicken wing that pairs well with cold beer or sake.

Miso-nikomi  udon

Miso-nikom i udon is a healthy and delicious noodle dish that is served with tender vegetables, thick udon noodles and a rich miso broth that soothes the soul.

Aichi can be enjoyed year-round with a number of seasonal activities all around the prefecture. Choosing when to go may depend on what you want to see, do and eat. Many of the local eateries have seasonal menus which will only be available during that particular season.

If you’re interested in Aichi’s natural surroundings, autumn may be the best time to go in terms of the unique colors of the wilderness and steady temperatures. Many areas are also lit up during this time of year, turning it into a magical wonderland. Spring is also a great way to catch scenic nature vibes.

Summer and winter, despite their extreme temperatures, are still fun times to go thanks to a number of festivals. 

Where to stay

Aichi Prefecture has a variety of different accommodations depending on the area, with a range of price points to meet your needs across hotels, guest houses, ryokan (inns) and more.

One place I can recommend is Yunokaze Hazu in the hot spring town of Yuya Onsen where we stayed on our first night.

Lining the banks of the Itajiki River deep in the Horaikyo Valley, Yuya Onsen boasts over 1,000 years of history and is a picture-perfect place to relax after a day exploring nearby Shinshiro City.

Yunokaze Hazu is located just 15 minutes away from the Atera No Nanataki waterfall and is hidden away in the peaceful forest by the Ure river. The ryokan’s onsen, listed in Japan’s top 100 hot springs , is a healing hot spring that cleanses and restores your body and soul. At night, from their outdoor onsen, you can hear and see the Ure river under a platter of stars. And for dinner, you’ll be served an array of seasonal dishes made with fresh local ingredients.

How To Use Go To Travel Campaign

Under the banner of a national “Go To Travel campaign” to stimulate travel within Japan to boost the local economies, the Japanese government has announced a series of measures. Here is a quick guide to help you understand such a campaign.

What is a Go To Travel Campaign?

The Go To Travel campaign is a Japanese government subsidy encouraging domestic travel to help boost the economy. It also aims to bring business back to local tourism and hospitality operators, many of whom were forced to close during the coronavirus state of emergency. The discount ONLY applies to domestic trips and can be claimed up to a set limit. For day trips , travelers can receive a discount of up to 7,000yen and coupons of up to 3,000yen per trip. For overnight trips , the maximum discount that travelers can receive is 13,000 yen per person a night, while the maximum amount of coupons that can be received is 7,000 yen per person a night.

How can I get the discount?

To receive the discount, you’ll need to book your trip with businesses that are registered with the campaign. There are several ways to book as follows. 1) Book directly through at a registered hotel First, look for the participating businesses on the official Go To Travel Website here . (Japanese only) Then, book directly through the hotel that you chose. At this point, the prices don't include the promotion. To get the discount, you then need to access StayNavi and create your account to register for the discount.

Once you’ve created your account, go to your personal page on StayNavi and click on the “ホテル” under “Go To トラベルクーポン発券” to apply for the discount. Key in all the details accordingly to what’s written. The page is only available in Japanese so if you need language assistance, ask someone around you that knows the language.

Once you apply, on the personal page, there will be a coupon. Print out the coupon or take a screenshot of the page and bring it with you upon staying at the hotel. If you do not bring this discount ticket, you will have to pay the full amount.

2) Book through Booking.com To search for an eligible hotel, just look for the orange "Go To Travel" flag on the corner of the hotel listing on Booking.com . At the time of your booking, you pay 65% of the total cost for the accommodation or package. Booking through Booking.com, travelers must apply through a different webpage for the 15% coupon issued in electronic form. See details on the next section, "How to apply for electronic coupon".

3) Book through major Japanese travel agencies/booking systems On most major Japanese travel agencies/booking systems, the discounts are included in the promotion and upon booking, you’ll pay the discounted price directly through the agency/system. At the time of your booking, you pay 65% of the total cost for the accommodation or package, while the 15% in coupons will be issued to you by the travel agent or hotel either in physical or electronic form. This will change depending on the agency/system so upon booking, make sure to read the instructions carefully.

How to apply for electronic coupon

Open https://goto-travel-ecoupon.jp/ (Japanese only) to visit the Go To Travel coupon page where you can claim your coupon starting from 15:00 JST on your check-in date. Key in all the details from your confirmation number, destination prefecture and travel agent ID. e.g Booking.com travel agent id is listed here . Keep in mind that the coupon will expire after your check-out date. And coupons are non-refundable and you cannot receive change when you pay with the coupons.

Where can I use the coupon?

Go To Travel has released a list of participating businesses and locations. This will include souvenir shops, restaurants, tourist attractions and activities. The list is only available in Japanese but can be found here . To use the electronic/digital coupon , look for the QR code at the participating venues for you to scan. After using the coupon, it will be deducted from your account. For physical coupon , simply hand the coupon at the purchase of your items to the cashier. Keep in mind that both physical and digital coupons will only be valid for use in the designated prefectures and on the designated dates of travel.

When does the campaign end?

Tentatively, the campaign is expected to end on January 31st 2021.

How many times can I use the campaign?

There is no limit on how many trips you can make during the campaign period or on the length of each trip.

Who is eligible for the campaign?

Both the Japanese citizens and foreign residents living in Japan are eligible for this campaign. This campaign is only aimed for the residents, not for those visiting from abroad. For foreign residents, they must have their Residence Card (Zairyu Card; 在留カード) with you as a proof of eligibility and your address.

Aichi Prefecture (愛知県) is located in Chubu Region, the Central Japan, and its capital city Nagoya is the 4th biggest city in Japan as well as one of the economy and industrial centers of the country. Aichi Prefecture is also known as home to TOYOTA, the global car manufacture company that has its headquarter in Toyota City, and there are several related facilities attracting automobile fans worldwide. 1. Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle (名古屋城) is a Japanese castle located in Nagoya City. The castle was originally constructed in early 17th century and served as one of the most important castles in Japan ruled by the Tokugawa clan during Edo Period. The most part of the castle was destroyed during World War II bombing by the U.S. Army Air Forces, it has been reconstructed in 1959 and now serves as a popular tourist site in Nagoya City. The castle is a top viewing spot for cherry blossoms, and also it’s illuminated at night from the sunset to 23:00 pm everyday.

2. Toyota Automobile Museum

Toyota Automobile Museum (トヨタ博物館) is a museum dedicated to the automobile. The museum exhibits about 140 automobiles from Japan, Europe and the U.S. from from the late 1800s up to the present as well as showcasing the worldwide history of automobiles and automobile culture. The museum also has restaurant/cafe, shop, library and facilities for kids. It’s a must-visit spot for car fans and also a great spot to enjoy with group or family.

3. LEGOLAND JAPAN

LEGOLAND JAPAN (レゴランド) is an amusement park dedicated to a popular toy, LEGO. The park was launched in Nagoya City in 2017, and has become one of the most visited theme parks in Japan today. 4. Nagoya Food

The capital city of Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya is one of the most popular Japanese cities among foodies, and there are numbers of regional signature dishes called “Nagoya Meshi” that fascinates visitors such as Tebasaki (Deep-fried Chicken Wings), Miso Katsu (Pork Cutlet with Miso Sauce), Hitsumabushi (Grilled Eel on Rice) and more.

5. Inuyama Castle

Inuyama Castle (犬山城) is a Japanese castle located in Inuyama City, the former castle town during Edo Period, which is about 25 km north of Nagoya City. Inuyama Castle was built in 1440, and it’s one of only 12 original castles remaining in Japan that has been surviving over centuries. The castle is situated along Kiso River that borders between Aichi and Gifu Prefectures, and the pleasant river view can be enjoyed from the main keep of the castle. The castle is the main venue of the traditional Japanese festival, Inuyama Matsuri which is held every first weekend of April.

The beautiful and unique townscape with historic buildings is often used as a shooting location for movies, drams and music videos. 8. Toyokawa Inari

Toyokawa Inari (豊川稲荷) or its real name is Myogonji Temple (妙厳寺) is a Sodo sect Buddhist Temple located in Toyokawa City in eastern Aichi Prefecture (about 70 km from Nagoya City), which is dedicated to the god of fertility, rice and agriculture, industry and worldly success as well as the foxes. The unique sight of countless stone statues of foxes can be seen at the temple site.

9. Satsuki & Mei’s House

Have you seen “My Neighbour Totoro”? It’s one of the most popular animation films by Studio Ghibli and has fans all over the world. If you have ever seen the film, you may remember the countryside house where the sisters (Satsuki and Mei) lived. The full-scale replica of the house is in Moricoro Park, Aichi Prefecture. Not only the house exterior but also the interior also presents just like in the film as if the sisters actually live there in the real life. 10. Visit Shirakawago

One of the most famous landmarks in Japan, Shirakawago Village is situated in Gifu Prefecture, about 160 km north of Nagoya City. Although it takes around 2.5h to access Shirakawago Village from Nagoya, it’s the top tourist site in Central Japan so if you are visiting Aichi Prefecture, it’s highly recommended to take a day trip to this beautiful preserved village and the surrounding areas like Takayama and the pleasant nature.

10 Best Things to Do in Aichi Prefecture

Aichi is the biggest city in the Chubu region of Japan. It has over 7.5 million population, and the capital’s prefecture Nagoya is a business and transportation hub at the heart of Japan. It is easily reached from Tokyo in the Kanto region and Kyoto and Osaka in the Kansai region. Manufacturing is the main industry as the world-famous company Toyota has its headquarters in Aichi. The prefecture offers a number of entertaining spots for tourists to learn about the history and uniqueness of the region as well, including some beautiful castles. And Aichi is getting more attention from international tourists especially because of the opening of Ghibli Park in November 2022! Adding Aichi to your travel list will be a good idea, when you are traveling between Tokyo and Kyoto, you will easily make this prefecture a stopover! From Nagoya, you can also access the famous Nakasendo Route in the Kiso Valley . In this article, we will introduce the top 10 things to do in Aichi prefecture.

The beautiful Nagoya Castle is an iconic landmark in Nagoya city. It was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who opened the Tokugawa Shogunate and governed the whole country for about 260 years during the Edo era . Most of the original constructions were burned down by fire during WW2, but the main five-story castle tower was restored in 1959. The castle is visited by a number of tourists all year round but is especially popular in spring when the numerous sakura trees, including several weeping cherry trees, are in full bloom .

There is a special street called Kinshachi Yokocho just outside the gates of the castle. The newly opened tourist attraction contains many small shops, restaurants, and cafes standing along a cozy street. Visitors can enjoy local dishes and buy merchandise with a logo or pictures of the castle!  

Nagoya Castle 9 am – 4.30 pm Admission ¥500

The Osu area in Nagoya refers to a busy shopping district full of lively small shops selling a large variety of products. It was once a shopping arcade for local people but later revitalized as a center of modern fashion and other new cultures. With its unique features and welcoming atmosphere, it is becoming more popular among young generations and foreign tourists with over 1,200 shops and restaurants. Visitors can find common activities and spots including tasty local food and historical spots including “Osu Kannon”, a representative Buddhist temple in the area. Many events are held in the area throughout the year. In addition, Osu is a great place to learn more about Japan’s anime culture, manga, and more! It offers enjoyable experience for everyone regardless of age and backgrounds.

Along with Nagoya Castle, Inuyama Castle is a famous historical spot in Aichi built in 1537. The samurai castle is listed among the 12 original castles in Japan and maintained the original main towers that were initially built in 1537. Inuyama Castle is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles! It stands on a small hillside overlooking the Kiso River near the prefectural border between Aichi and Gifu. The surroundings boast plenty of nature which offers a peaceful atmosphere for visitors. The castle town nearby is full of well-preserved Japanese traditional buildings. In recent years, it has been attracting a number of tourists as a popular sightseeing spot where you can enjoy tasty dishes and find small gifts as well.

Meiji Mura is an unique theme park located in Inuyama city. It aims to contribute to preserving the valuable constructions and properties from the Meiji , Taisho , and Showa periods. There are a number of historical buildings moved and reconstructed there from the original location, and 16 of them are officially designated as Important Cultural Property. The third largest theme park in Japan, is visited by many tourists not only from overseas but by Japanese nationals because it is a great place for everyone to learn more about Japan’s history. Regular events are organised such as mystery solving attractions. Visitors can participate in the events and explore the park to get a clue to solve the mystery!

There are three islands that are popular among tourists as sightseeing spots in Mikawa Bay. One of them is Himakajima , also known as Octopus Island as it is famous for octopus, and blowfish. The entire island is included in the Mikawa wan Quasi-National Park . It is the closest island to Nagoya and is easily reached from the ports on the mainland. There are a variety of activities offering different kinds of entertainment, so it is all up to you how to spend time in the relaxing island resort! You can play with dolphins, unwind at a relaxing beach, try fresh seafood, or just take a stroll around the island while feeling the sea breeze. 

Sakushima is another island located in Mikawa Bay. The basic concept is similar to Himakajima island, but it features a number of unique artworks which can be found everywhere on the island. Some of them are open-air exhibited, and visitors can take a picture and directly touch them for free. The artificial works create a photogenic scenery in harmony with the uninhabited nature around. It is also called “the island of cats”, so you might encounter cute wild cats while exploring the island . There are no traffic lights and convenience stores , and it feels like time goes by slowly on the island. There are some nice restaurants and cafes that serve refreshing drinks and lovely dishes with freshly caught seafood. 

Did you know there is a place in Japan where you can enjoy both autumn leaves and cherry blossoms at the same time? At Senmichi in Toyota city, you can see the pink cherry blossoms and red/orange maples in full blossom in autumn! Shikizakura is a special type of sakura that blooms twice a year; once in spring, and again just as the autumn leaves are peaking! At Obara Fureai Park you can watch over 10,000 special cherry trees. The slope of the hill is covered with about 1,200 cherry blossom trees, creating a beautiful combination of autumn-colored leaves and cherry blossoms. The sight becomes all the more spectacular when the branches wave in the wind all along the slope. The view is usually at its best from mid-November through early December, but the peak period varies somewhat from year to year.

Chubu Centrair International Airport serves as a center for domestic and international flights which connects the region to other areas and countries around the world. It is relatively small compared to other main international airports such as Narita International Airport , making it a great alternative. There are a number of restaurants and shops offering local foods and special merchandise and it also offers an open-air observation deck where you can watch the airplanes taking off and landing. There is a observation public bath called Fu no Yu for you to enjoy. Watching the airplanes and the beautiful sunset from a public bath is a wonderful experience.

Close to the airport, you can find the Pottery Footpath . You can walk along the street with the unique scenery and learn the history of Tokoname Yaki pottery. Along the streets, you will see some cat statues including a big Maneki-neko (lucky cat) . If you have to wait at the airport or decided to come to this area, this is a great place to visit!

If you are looking for somewhere enjoyable for your family, Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium could be an option for you. It is one of the most famous aquariums in Japan and opened in 1992. It boasts a large collection of marine creatures over 500 species which are exhibited in various ways to entertain visitors. Visitors can enjoy exciting shows performed by large animals such as dolphins and killer whales at the huge tank. They also offer several informative events which enables visitors to learn about the marine ecosystems. It is an opportunity for kids to deepen their understanding of wildlife through interesting programs.

Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium 9.30 am – 5.30 pm ¥2,030 (adults)

Ghibli Park is the first theme park that features Studio Ghibli films which will open on November 1st, 2022. It’s located in the vast park which is the former venue of the 2005 Aichi Expo. There’s no ride like Disneyland, but you can enjoy the world of Studio Ghibli while walking around the area where the beloved Studio Ghibli films come to life! There will be 5 areas featuring popular films, but first, they will open the 3 areas: Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse, Hill of Youth and Dondoko Forest. Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse features popular Ghibli films and the studio’s secret with some shops, cafes, and exhibitions. Hill of Youth is inspired by Whisper of the Heart, and Dondoko Forest is inspired by My Neighbor Totoro. In 2023, other 2 areas featuring Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Howl’s Moving Castle will open. 

Booking a ticket for the designated date and entrance time beforehand is required. Also, you’ll need to book a ticket for each area. Please note that there’s no ticket available at the entrance. Aichi Prefecture is accessible by several different transportation methods, including trains, highway buses, and airplanes. The main transportation hubs in Aichi are Nagoya Station and Chubu Centrair International Airport.

The most convenient way to get to Aichi from Tokyo is by taking the Shinkansen bullet train, which takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes for a one-way trip. The travel time between Kyoto and Aichi is only around 40 minutes by Shinkansen, and it is fully covered by the JR Pass.

The closest airport to Aichi is the Chubu Centrair International Airport, and it’s only 29 minutes away from Nagoya Airport. Domestic flights from major airports in Japan are available on daily basis, and international flights from various countries are available too.

2. Pray for a good fortune at Atsuta Jingu!

Atsuta Jingu is the second highest rank shrine of Japan, and it has been one of the most significant centers of worship in Japan since ancient times. The shrine was founded in the 8 th Century, and it draws over 9 million on New Year’s every year.

It enshrines the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, and stores the sacred sword Kusanagi, which is one of the three imperial regalia. The sword is considered sacred, and it is never shown or displayed to the public.

3. Explore the legendary Meiji Village Museum!

Meiji Village Museum is an open-air museum and theme park in Inuyama, Aichi. It is best known for its unique architectures, preserving the atmosphere of the Meiji (1867 – 1912), Taisho (1912 – 1926), and early Showa (1926 – 1989) periods.

In Meiji Village Museum, you can see how Japanese combined the European and Japanese architecture back then, bringing a new impression and feeling to the Japan of old. Meiji Village Museum has a total of 67 Meiji-era reconstructed original buildings, which eleven of them are recognized as national treasures by the government.

Korankei is a valley located at the back of the mountainous area of Toyota City. This valley is best known for its colorful tinted leaves in the fall, and indeed, it is reputed to be one of the best spots for fall foliage in the Chubu region.

Korankei Valley features a vermilion bridge called Taigetsukyo Bridge, a popular photo spot in the area. The best time to visit the valley is in November, when the leaves of the three turn to gold and red. The night illuminations are held from sunset until 21:00 in fall.

5. Stop by the historical Inuyama Castle!

Inuyama Castle looks extremely beautiful in winter, when the snow covers its roof and the surrounding trees. Located next to the Kiso River, the inside of Inuyama Castle is very well preserved, and it gives an insight into life back then.

6. Pray at Osu Kannon Temple in Nagoya!

Osu Kannon Temple was originally built in 1333 in Gifu, but it was moved to its present location in 1612 by Tokugawa Ieyasu due to repeated flooding. The main hall features a large red paper lantern steadied with wires from its base.

This temple is also famous for its Buddha statues, and for its on-ground library that has over 15,000 Japanese and Chinese Buddhists works. The best time to visit the temple is on the 18 th and 28 th of every month, when an antique fair is held on the temple grounds.

7. Visit Oasis 21, a famous landmark of Nagoya!

The castle was built in 1521 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the Hommaru Palace, which was completed in 1615, served as the official residence and administrative seat of the Owari-Tokugawa clan.

1. Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle is right in the heart of Nagoya, and is very famous for its golden shachihoko (a mythical creature with a tiger's head and carp's body) figures on the roof. Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun who established the Edo shougunate, built it in 1521. The main part of the castle was rebuilt after the war, and now you can climb to the top to feel like being a shogun to govern the country.

2. Atsuta Jingu Shrine

Atsuta Jingu Shrine is the second highest rank shrine of Japan, founded in the 8th century. It occupies a big area with huge woods in the metropolitan atomosphere of Nagoya, and there are always many people coming for all kinds of prayers. The woods are full of sacred and reverent feelings, and makes you feel something divine inside yourself, too.

6. Toyokawa Inari Shrine

Toyokawa Inari temple is located in Toyokawa-shi, east of Aichi. The temple is as big as Atsuta Jingu Shrine and is also popular among people. In front of the temple is a street full of shops and restaurants that serve all different kinds of inarizushi.

7. Toyohashi Curry Udon

Toyohashi is the second largest city of Aichi, and is located near the east edge of Aichi, right next to Shizuoka. The most popular food in Toyohashi is Toyohashi curry udon. What makes Toyohashi curry udon different from regular curry udon you can find anywhere in Japan is that it has rice and a grated yam under the noodle and curry soup. How does it taste? You have to try it by yourself! There are more than 30 restaurants serving Toyohashi curry udon, so you'll want to find your favorite.

9. Sakushima Island

Sakushima is the secong largest island in Mikawawan Bay, and recently getting more and more popular because of its huge modern pop art displays all over the island. The island itself is very quiet and small, and the only transportation is walking and cycling. More than 20 modern art figures and constructions are on the coast or along the streets, or up on the hill to be touched, climbed and felt directly for everyone. To enjoy this slow artistic atmosphere many young people even as far as Tokyo come to visit Sakushima very often.

10. Okazaki Red Miso Museum (Hacchou Miso no Sato)

Okazaki is the home of Ieyasu Tokugawa as well as for red miso. There is a miso museum in the center of Okazaki city, where you can see how red miso is made for more than some hundred years.

11. Seto Ceramic Festival

When you say ceramics in Japanese, you say "setomono"( thing of seto) because the Seto city area has been the center of making ceramics even back in the 7th century. In September there is a big ceramic festival where you can buy all kinds of ceramics and dishes at very cheap prices on the streets. Most of them are very traditional Japanese style ceramics which are the best for your souvenirs.

12. Tokoname Path of Chinaware

The Chubu International Airport is in Tokoname city, which is also very famous for ceramics all over Japan. There are many ceramic artists even from overseas who have their own studios and shops to sell their hand-made ceramics. There are many narrow streets with these small studios and shops alongside, and you can enjoy taking a walk window-shopping ceramics.

13. Inuyama Castle (a national treasure)

Inuyama Castle is a national tresure of Japan, and for those who love samurai culture, this castle is a holy place to visit. It conserves the construction style of the era, and from the top of the castle you can enjoy the landscape of the Nagara-gawa river.

Kamala Harris to campaign in Wilkes-Barre days after debate with Donald Trump

Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Wilkes-Barre on Friday for a rally, the Democratic presidential nominee's campaign announced on Monday.

The campaign did not announce the specific location of the 7 p.m. event.

The stop will come a few days after her debate with former President Donald Trump in Philadelphia on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Harris will attend the annual 9/11  Moment of Remembrance  at the Flight 93 National Memorial outside of Shanksville with President Joe Biden.

Harris campaigned in Pittsburgh with Biden on Labor Day. Her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, was in Lancaster, Pittsburgh and Erie last week.

Things to do in Irago and Tahara

An idyllic place by the sea, with lots to experience

Whilst Irago feels remote, there are many sights to visit in the surrounding area at the tip of the Atsumi peninsula, in Aichi prefecture . Closest to the Sea Park is Irago Beach. Whilst lounging on the golden sands is an option, the area is also steeped in idyllic landscapes and views.

At the forefront of the beach is Lover's Sanctuary. Here a plaque offers blessings to visitors for their future. A bell hangs for couples to ring together and a small gated section allows couples to hang a symbolic padlock, much like on certain bridges in central Europe. If visiting the area as a couple, then the monument is a perfect place to come together and witness the sea front underneath the bell. The adjacent beach, Kojigahama, is also known as the beach of romance, made famous by a poem by Toson Shimazaki. A perfect place for you both to take in the surroundings.

Once finished at Lover's Sanctuary, you can enjoy fresh seafood from restaurants lining the sea front. Fish is bought daily from the nearby fish market, which you can also visit. Whilst not a stereotypical tourist destination, the fish market offers an intriguing look at the local sea life. Here, staff from restaurants in the surrounding area come and bid on an array of trays of fresh, live fish for preparation later the same day. It is very high octane and fast paced – with the auctioneer delivering an extremely excitable performance. It is very wet and you'll certainly smell like fish after visiting, but it may be something you'll only get to experience the once.

Irago is linked by ferry to destinations such as Toba, Morozaki and Kowa, all leaving from Irago Port. However, the port itself has things to see. Inside the building is the Irago Natural History Museum. It showcases both the fruit and animals found in the local area. Irago - and the wider Tahara area - is known for melons stemming from Okinawa. The museum describes how the melons were originally washed upon the shores of the beach and how the two areas are now intertwined. The rest of the museum has miniature models of ships and stuffed statues of various animals, letting you get up close to species that may be uncommon in your country. The port also has large stalls to fill up with food and snacks before your ferry. One of the stalls is dedicated to products from Okinawa.

Moving further away from the port, you can reach some of what Tahara is famous for: fruit farming. You're able to visit a fruit market which, in contrast to the fish market, is a much calmer watch. You're also able to get a taste of the melons in the summer at one of the Melon Gari places. Here you can buy pre-picked melons or pick your own from one of the greenhouses. You can take the melons back with you or have them prepared to eat inside the restaurant. The melon itself has a gorgeous sweet taste and it's easy to see why it's one of the specialties in the area. It's definitely something you must try whilst there.

A short drive from the Irago Sea Park is the local town. Here you're able to find local establishments for both shopping and entertainment. The local shopping centre in the middle of town contains a traditional kimono shop, where you can purchase or possibly even just try on the traditional wares. With friendly staff and enticing prices, it's a place where you can enjoy Japanese traditions for lower than you imagined. At night there is a choice of both traditional Japanese restaurants and a Karaoke Snack bar, leaving you with a perfect night out. To top off the evening, the area is home to fireflies at night. So if you stop in one of the remote areas near the Atsumi History Maseum, then you should get lucky and spot them.

Life in the Irago area is a much different pace to that of a big city, which means there are more unique aspects to discover as your visit continues.
