Resort Review: Acuaverde Beach Resort Day Tour

This is a kinda late post. __________

17 th of June 2018. We honor all the fathers who worked hard to provide for their family. Shout out to my dad who always wants the best for his family. So for father’s day, my brother and I spontaneously invited the family for a day trip in San Juan, Batangas. Thank God every one (particularly daddy) agreed. (Side story: We were planning a San Felipe, Zambales or a San Juan, La Union trip. However, Zambales was still recovering from habagat wrath while La Union has few beach resorts good for a day trip that is pet friendly.)

I remembered in one of DIY Philippines facebook  post that there is a resort in Batangas that is pet-friendly. Acuaverde Beach Resort is the place to be! Three hours away from Manila is the town of Laiya where you can choose from a variety of beach resorts, one of which is Acuaverde. Here are the details in bullet form:

• Laiya, San Juan, Batangas
• Upon reaching Laiya you need to pay their Environmental fee of Php20 per person.
• You can have a quick stop at the 100 plus years old San Juan Nepomuceno church in San Juan, Batangas.

Rates and Inclusions

• Day tour costs Php1,300 (peak season) inclusive of the following:
• Use of resort facilities from 8am to 5pm
• Welcome drinks
• Morning snacks, Buffet lunch, Afternoon snacks
• Free use of kayak (although we were not able to try this)
• Wifi access
• And an excellent service

• For your fur friends, day tour costs Php600 per pet inclusive of a gift bag with the following:
• Sachet of organic shampoo (This is Popo’s shampoo!)
• Dog treats (Yay!)
• Small ball (More yay!)
• Clean up plastic in a container (Be a responsible paw rents by picking up your fur babies’ shizz)
• The resort gives you a chill vibe even upon arriving.
• They have several rooms good for 2-3pax and 4-5pax.
• They have cabanas for rent at Php2,000.
• They have smaller cabanas at the beach front and near the dining area for buffet lunch. If you are just 2-4pax, you can slash the cabana rentals and chill at these smaller cabanas instead. It is perfectly fine with them.
• The resort has enough parking space.
• Semi-white sand beach that’s a bit rocky on some parts (Instant foot massage!)
• On the beach front are numerous small cabanas.
• They offer water activities such as banana boat, jet ski, fly board, kayak, etc.
• Beach volleyball will never go MIA!

Pet-Friendly Resort

• This is probably the most pet-friendly establishment ever.
• We treat our dog, Popo, as REALLY a part of the family and we really appreciate establishments that allow dogs inside. We were not hesitant at all for the Php600 fee; it’s quite sulit naman since they provided the pet gift bag.
• They will, however, let you sign a waiver with your pet’s details and that you are a responsible pet owner.
• They have a play park for your fur babies!
• 5/5 for me.
• From my first call to the resort until the day itself, they were courteous and accommodating. They would happily answer ALL of my questions.
• For day tours, they serve morning and afternoon snacks and a buffet lunch.
• Though we checked in late at 11:30AM, they still served our morning snacks (clubhouse sandwich).
• Buffet lunch was okay. I loved the mushroom soup, kaldereta and mango sago!
• Afternoon snack was pancit palabok and slice of bread.
• I also loved their tamarind juice!
• Common restroom is 3/5 for me. It does not smell but it is quite small for a common restroom.
• I think shower areas should be cleaned at least every hour to remove the accumulation of sand inside.

Overall, I rate this resort 4/5 and is highly recommendable to friends especially those with fur babies.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
