ABBA Voyage setlist: Full list of songs performed at ABBA's hologram show

ABBA 's music undeniably transcends decades; its universal appeal bringing cross-generational joy the world over. And now, after announcing their ground-breaking ABBA Voyage show at its purpose-built ABBA Voyage Arena in London's Pudding Mill Lane last year, the spectacle is finally open to fans.

Featuring Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus,  Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad's classic back catalogue, plus tracks from the group's chart-topping 2021 record Voyage , the show uses digital 'ABBAtars' and invites fans to immerse themselves in a 360-degree experience.

The band saw significant uplift on the Official Albums Chart as the show garnered rave reviews, too. Their Gold - Greatest Hits collection recently returned to the Top 10, with Voulez-Vous also proving particularly popular .

ABBA Reunite for First Time in 40 Years, Announce New Album and Digital Concert

After years of delay and teasing on social media, ABBA have officially reunited, announcing the new album Voyage out November 6th.

Although the Swedish pop group sang “Me and I” at a private gala in 2016 — their first time performing since 1986 — this marks their first time officially reuniting in 40 years. Ahead of the release, they dropped the reflective ballad “I Still Have Faith In You” and the disco gem “Don’t Shut Me Down.”

In addition, ABBA will also perform a digital concert on May 27th, 2022 — which they first announced in 2016. Made through George Lucas’ Industry Light & Magic, Abba Voyage will take place at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s arena in London. General tickets are available on September 7th.

“It’s been a while since we made music together,” the band said in a statement. “Almost 40 years, actually. We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it. They say it’s foolhardy to wait more than 40 years between albums, so we’ve recorded a follow-up to The Visitors . We simply call it Voyage and we’re truly sailing in uncharted waters.”

“It’s hard to say what’s been the most joyful thing for me with this project,” Andersson said. “If it’s the involvement in creating the concert together with everyone or being back in the studio together again after 40 years. I think hearing Frida and Agnetha singing again is hard to beat.” Added Anni-Frid Lyngstad: “Those first sessions back in 2018 were such fun, and when Benny called and asked if I’d consider singing some more I jumped at it!”

Abba Voyage Review: No Ordinary Abba Night at the Club

With a concert spectacle mixing wizardry and technical skill, the band makes a case for its continued relevance.

LONDON — I kept turning to my friend, wanting to tell him how young and fresh the two women that put the As in Abba seemed on the giant screens ahead of us. Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were not actually in the room with us, but that’s the kind of stupor Abba Voyage dazzles you into.

Though the Swedish pop band has not played London since 1979, holographic “Abbatars” of the band, modeled in their likeness from that year, are currently filling up a custom-built arena for a 90-minute concert of their greatest hits. A combination of motion-captured performance, animated sequences and a live 10-person band make up the spectacle, which makes a floor-thumping case for the music’s continued relevance.

Projected on a screen that envelops one side of the spaceshiplike auditorium, the Abbatars play mostly as if it were a real concert. They “enter” from below the stage, make banter with the audience, ask for patience as they switch costumes, and return for an encore.

It would feel corny if it weren’t so triumphantly fun, and the Friday night crowd was certainly along for the ride. Largely a mix of couples in their mid 60s and younger, disco-leaning gay men, the attendees sang through every number with the intensity of a therapeutic ritual. Abba Voyage is an exercise in symbol worship that separates itself from an ordinary Abba night at the club through state-of-the-art production values.

“To be or not to be — that is no longer the question,” the band member Benny Andersson declares in a prerecorded solo address, and questions about live performance, truth, eternity and transience are frothed up into the sheer giddiness of (almost) being in the same room as one of the biggest acts in pop music history.

It’s hard to pin down the reasons that such a strange, 21st century endeavor is a crowd-pleasing success, but Abba’s music has its own strange alchemy. Take “Mamma Mia” (performed here in rhinestone-emblazoned pink velour jumpsuits): Why is the hook an Italian catchphrase? Or “Fernando” (sung against a dramatic lunar eclipse): What could these four Swedes possibly have to say about the Mexican revolution? And yet, something about the earnestness of those songs, reflected in the audience’s full-chested belting, has made them inescapable pop standards.

Those two songs are performed straightforwardly, the Abbatars life-size and center stage, with surrounding screens projecting close-ups for those seated in the orchestra level, behind a massive dance floor. Most of the numbers are done this way, recreating a concert experience; the audience was overjoyed to dance along and applaud each step of the way. Choreography, based on the band member’s real movements, but captured from younger body doubles, hit its peak during “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” with the digital Lyngstad doing high-kicks and twirls that I’m not sure the real one was capable of in her heyday.

A couple of songs, however, played more like immersive music videos, with the full size of the screens used to tell more thorough visual stories. The band famously sang and performed through its own breakup, and “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” a 1977 anthem mirroring the dissolution of romantic and professional relations in the group, is here performed as an Ingmar Bergman-esque study in missed connections. Its members’ fractured faces sing across a hall of mirrors before ultimately embracing in reconciliation.

Less successful than those episodes were two fully-animated numbers, set to “Eagle” and “Voulez Vous,” following a young traveler’s journey through forests and pyramids, and culminating in their discovery of giant sculptures of the band member’s heads.

Those songs recreate the interstitial bits of a “real” concert, as do speeches from each Abbatar about their success and artistry. The best of these interludes saw the band present the footage from their Eurovision Song Contest-winning performance of “Waterloo,” the song that catapulted them to fame in 1974.

Abba’s music is deceptively complex. What sounds like a simple little song reveals itself to be an intricately layered web of harmonies, melodies, real and digital instruments and angelic English vocals, ever-so-slightly outside the band’s Scandinavian comfort zone.

It’s a mix of wizardry and technical skill that, decades later, after movies and musicals and greatest hits compilations, is still at the pinnacle of pop maximalism. To hear the closing piano riffs on “Chiquitita” in a crowded arena is an exalting experience, and despite its eyebrow-raising premise, Abba Voyage miraculously takes flight.

“To be or not to be, that is no longer the question,” declared ABBA co-founder and musical mastermind Benny Andersson at the start of “ABBA Voyage,” the Swedish quartet’s first “concert” in over 40 years. And if that sounds like a curiously existential way to begin a pop concert, well, this is no ordinary live show.

For a start, despite Andersson’s insistence that “This is really me, I just look very good for my age,” it’s actually his de-aged, computer-generated avatar — or “ABBA-tar,” if you must — that is speaking his pre-recorded words. Alongside him are the similarly CGI-rendered forms of his bandmates, all looking as they did — or, in truth, actually somewhat better than — they did in their ‘70s heyday.

Meet, then, the prefab four, playing a show that is billed, 100% accurately, as “a concert like no other” — which doesn’t mean it isn’t every bit as big a deal as it would have been had ABBA reformed for a more traditional concert.

Staged in the purpose-built ABBA Arena near East London’s Olympic Park, the world premiere performance nonetheless attracted royalty of both the showbiz world (Kylie Minogue, Keira Knightley, Kate Moss) and actual sovereign variety: the King and (dancing) Queen of Sweden walked the red carpet in support of one of their nation’s leading exports.

However, it was the presence of all four real-life members of ABBA — Andersson, co-founder and co-mastermind Björn Ulvaeus, and lead singers Anni-Frid Lyngstad and the usually reclusive Agnetha Fältskog — that caused the real stir, proof of the demand fueling this technologically ground-breaking (and presumably wildly expensive) new concept in entertainment. ( Andersson and Ulvaeus spoke with Variety about the shows last year and earlier this week.)

The stakes, therefore, are high. If there are nerves, however, these ice-cool Swedes — and their similarly unflappable producers, Svana Gisla and Ludvig Andersson — don’t show them. And, as it turns out, there was little need to worry.

True, as the digital foursome emerge from the floor — like Doctor Who’s Tardis, the arena appears bigger on the inside, appropriate for tonight’s adventures in time and space — the spectre of “Rock Circus,” a spectacularly naff animatronic Madame Tussauds attraction that ran in London throughout the ‘90s, hung in the air.

At first, the movements seem a little too jerky, the lines a little too obvious. But then, just as when you saw the initially-somewhat-unconvincing dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” for the first time, your eyes adjust, the willing suspension of disbelief kicks in, and they begin to feel like living, breathing musicians, rather than the product of 160 motion capture cameras and one billion computing hours by Industrial Light & Magic.

Certainly, the crowd has no problem giving these computer programs a round of applause, a standing ovation or a shrieked declaration of undying love. This, after all, is their chance to witness something most of them had never seen before, and all of them thought they’d never see again – some of the greatest pop songs of all time delivered, at least tangentially, by the original protagonists.

And these avatars certainly capture ABBA’s original exuberance, minus the Jurassic tendencies that tend to blight decades-after-the-fact reunions in the real world. The pre-publicity stressed these weren’t holograms, and that’s true — these digital doppelgangers look almost indistinguishable from real people from every angle, with each tuft of hair and outlandish ‘70s costume rendered in occasionally terrifying detail. They can dance, they can jive, they can even make bad jokes about pausing for costume changes — and the crowd are having the time of their lives, teetering on the brink of delirium throughout, despite their majority VIP status.

But then these songs tend to do that to people. After a slow-ish start with the lesser-known songs “The Visitors” and “Hole in Your Soul,” the set delivers the hits just like any ABBA tribute act. However, some notable classics, from “Super Trouper” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” are absent — smart money is surely on versions of these already being in the can for future setlist tweaks. But any quibbles are drowned out by a youthful, 10 piece live band — put together by Keira Knightley’s husband, James Righton, formerly of “new rave” sensations the Klaxons — that means “S.O.S” and “Does Your Mother Know?” have rarely sounded so punchy.

Meanwhile, the accompanying visuals are out of this world: extravagant light effects, interstellar backdrops and CGI Tron costumes mean that, in the unlikely event you are underwhelmed by splendid versions of “Knowing Me, Knowing You” and “Voulez-Vous,” there’s always something to look at.

The budget doesn’t seem to have quite extended to a full avatar show — there are some bizarre, animated interludes, possibly designed to boost the bar takings, while “Waterloo” simply features joyous archive footage from the very beginning of the band’s journey into the public’s affections.

This “Voyage,” however, is ultimately about more high-tech pleasures. It succeeds so well that you would be surprised if other entertainment centers weren’t already queuing up to host the show (which is booked in London until at least this time next year), and if other groups with pan-generational fanbases and aging personnel weren’t already exploring something similar.

By the time the closing salvo of “Dancing Queen,” “Thank You for the Music” and a genuinely emotional “The Winner Takes It All” arrived, the crowd was so immersed that a digital rendering of ABBA as they are now fools almost everyone into believing the real Agnetha, Benny, Björn and Anni-Frid are onstage — that is, until the four of them really did shuffle on a few seconds later.

After 90 minutes with their younger selves, it feels strange to see them like this – mostly grey-haired, Frida with a cane, all suddenly rendered mortal like the rest of us. But it perhaps makes sense of why they embarked on this ludicrously ambitious project, rather than simply getting the band back together.

We’ll sadly never know for sure, but maybe, just maybe, “ABBA Voyage” will turn out to be even better than the real thing..

The concert, which took place at ABBA Arena in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, marked the first time in 36 years Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Björn Ulvaeus were seen as a group together in public.

Speaking to  NME  on the red carpet during the  opening night of their ‘Voyage’  residency, Lyngstad told NME “It feels fantastic” to be at the premiere. “Really looking forward to seeing the show again. I’ve seen it once on Monday evening, and it’s just that feeling, you want to see it again and again because there are so many details you can’t comprehend by just seeing it once.”

Many attendees took to social media to react to the lifelike concert event. “I was prepared to be cynical,” one fan  wrote . “But the Abba Voyage show blew me away. Can’t work [out how] they did it, but it felt like a real concert. Amazing, amazing stuff. And a little curtain call at the end. So touching.”

“I don’t wish to swear, but ABBA looking f*cking STUNNING!!” another attendee said . “Iconic superstars looking every bit as effortlessly classic as they should!”

Meanwhile, Ulvaeus told us it was “a bit surreal” to see the digital, disco era versions of themselves on stage at first, “but, you get used to it.” He added: “After all, we’ve seen ourselves in pictures and videos from the time almost every day for 40 years.”

After the show, the band came out for an official curtain call. Earlier today, when asked if the concert was a parting gift from the band, Ulvaeus told NME , “I think this is it. It’s sad to say that but then again, you can always take it back, can’t you? So the answer is, it could be yes, it could be no.”

Andersson had a similar response when asked if the concert series would be the end for the Swedish band, joking: “This is what you’ll see, this is what you’ll get. Then we’ll go home and we’ll sleep.”

Last September the creators of ABBA’s ‘Voyage’  spoke to  NME  about the creation of the concert, the chemistry of the band and how long it’s expected to run for.

Producer Svana Gisla said: “We don’t want to give all the surprises away because we want everyone to come and enjoy it, but there will be lots of hidden surprises, hopefully a bit of stage banter and 100 minutes of pure ABBA euphoria to be part of in this arena that someone had the brilliant idea of them building in the middle of a pandemic and Brexit.

“People talk about ‘immersive experiences’ a lot, but I don’t think that phrase has ever been truly delivered. I hope that when you stand in that arena, within everything that we’ve created specifically to give you that experience, you’ll go, ‘Ah, that’s what it really means’. The audio, the visuals, everything is 360 and there will just be ABBA in the air.”

My, my, just how much we’ve missed them.

In news that surely had many a fan prancing around like a Dancing Queen, ABBA reunited in 2021 with a brand-spanking new album – and announced an epic hologram tour.

Yep, the original four-piece are back, and their first album in 40 years, ABBA Voyage, has produced several hits, including I Still Have Faith in You and Don’t Shut Me Down.

Agnetha, Benny, Bj ö rn, and Anni-Frid are now set to perform together once more, but with a digital twist – appearing on stage as holograms instead of in real life.

So, when is their highly-anticipated tour and can you still get tickets ?

When are the ABBA Voyage tour dates?

ABBA Voyage shows begin in London on Friday, May 27 and are running until December 2022.

It’s then expected that the show will hit the road, on a world tour lasting until the year 2026.

The lengthy run is possible all thanks to ‘ABBAtars’ – aka the four holograms which feature the recorded performance of all four ABBA members, singing all the hits.

They were created with George Lucas’ studio Industrial Light & Magic, which is used for the digital effects in Star Wars. The group began working on the digital concert before getting back in the studio.

The initial venue is a special, purpose-built arena at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.

The ABBA Voyage residency will see the ABBAtars accompanied by a 10-piece live band, performing in a venue that can seat up to 3000 fans.

How to get ABBA Voyage tickets

There are still plenty of tickets available via Ticketmaster for shows later in 2022.

May and June concerts have very limited tickets available, while there are some select tickets for shows in July and August.

Availability opens up in September, October, November and December.

Fans can choose from seated tickets (starting from £21), accessible seats (from £30.50) or dance floor (from £53.95) – while more expensive options include getting a dance booth (from £143 per ticket).

A new box set featuring ABBA ’s full catalog of A-sides is on the way. Coming in October via Polar Music International, The Singles – The First Fifty Years arrives five decades after the legendary Swedish pop group’s breakthrough victory with “Waterloo” at Eurovision 1974 .

The Singles – The First Fifty Years updates ABBA’s 1982 compilation The Singles – The First Ten Years , adding the singles released in conjunction with the group’s 2021 reunion album Voyage . Available in 4xLP vinyl and double-CD formats, the set includes 38 songs, running from the group’s 1972 debut single “People Need Love” to 2022’s final Voyage single “No Doubt About It.”

All of ABBA’s biggest hits are on the tracklist, including “Dancing Queen,” “Take A Chance On Me,” “SOS,” “Mamma Mia,” “Fernando,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Chiquitita,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight),” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Super Trouper,” “One Of Us,” “Don’t Shut Me Down,” and more. The collection also includes four songs that were not issued as A-sides by Polar but saw release as singles in some countries, including “Hasta Mañana,” “Angeleyes” (a double A-side with “Voulez-Vous” in some countries), “Lay All Your Love On Me,” and “When All Is Said And Done.” The packaging includes an illustrated booklet with liner notes by ABBA historian Carl Magnus Palm.

ABBA were the first Swedish group to win the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2005, “Waterloo” was named the greatest song in the history of the competition. In the wake of ABBA’s victory, the group went on to become one of the best-selling musical acts in history, with more than 150 million records sold worldwide. The group’s music is the basis for the hit 1999 musical Mamma Mia! , its blockbuster 2008 film adaptation, and the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again . In 2022, the group launched its pioneering ABBA Voyage production in London, featuring holograms depicting the 1979 versions of members Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

Zum 50. Jubiläum ihres Sieges beim Eurovision Song Contest 1974 mit, veröffentlichen ABBA am 25. Oktober 2024 eine Sammlung ihrer größten Hits. Diese Veröffentlichung markiert eine Neuheit in der Geschichte der schwedischen Popband. Sie umfasst erstmals alle Single-A-Seiten, die ABBA von 1972 bis 2022 herausgebracht haben, inklusive der Singles ihres Comeback-Albums „Voyage“ aus dem Jahr 2021.

ABBA präsentiert 50-Jahre-Retrospektive  

Die Retrospektive wird den Titel „The Singles – The First Fifty Years“ tragen und eine chronologische Reise durch die Geschichte der Band bieten. Von „Ring Ring“ und „Love Isn’t Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)“ bis hin zu den weltweiten Hits wie „Mamma Mia“, „SOS“ und „Super Trouper“.

Ebenfalls werden ihre erfolgreichen Comeback-Singles von 2021 wie „Don’t Shut Me Down“ und „I Still Have Faith in You“ Teil der Sammlung sein. „The Singles – The First Fifty Years“ setzt damit das Konzept ihres 1982 erschienenen Doppelalbums „The Singles – The First Ten Years“ fort und aktualisiert es um vier Jahrzehnte. Die Kollektion enthält auch einige Lieder, die nur in bestimmten Ländern als Singles veröffentlicht wurden, wie „Hasta Mañana“. Der Titel „The First Fifty Years“ ist optimistisch gewählt – man hofft also auf 50 weitere Band-Jahre.

Der überraschende Eurovision-Triumph, der alles veränderte

Vor 50 Jahren änderte sich für die damals noch weitgehend unbekannte schwedische Popband vieles. ABBA gewann überraschend den Eurovision Song Contest mit ihrem Hit „Waterloo“ und legte damit den Grundstein für ihre Karriere. Eigentlich wurde damals die britisch-australische Sängerin Olivia Newton-John als Favoritin gesehen. Dennoch schafften es die vier Schweden mit ihrem Auftritt und dem Ohrwurm-Potenzial ihres Songs, das Publikum und die Juroren zu begeistern.

Mit ihrem Sieg begann die vier Bandmitglieder ihren Weg zum Weltruhm. Die Single „Waterloo“ stürmte die Charts in 54 Ländern, erreichte in vielen davon die Top 10 und verkaufte sich weltweit über 5 Millionen Mal. In Deutschland und Großbritannien war es der erste von vielen Nummer-1-Hits, die das Quartett landen sollte.
