The Driven Diesel Fuel Tank / Pre-Pump Kit (commonly referred to as the Hutch Mod) is the first step in the fuel system upgrade process. This kit includes all of the parts necessary to eliminate in the fuel circuit before the electric fuel pump (suction side) and add additional fuel filtration. Air in diesel fuel causes noisy operation and can damage the fuel injectors. This kit fits both the Super Duty Trucks and Excursions.
- Some CAB AND CHASSIS trucks may require more than the standard 15' of hose. If you are using this kit on a CC truck with a "behind the axle" fuel tank, please take a measurement from the fuel tank to the fuel pump (along the frame, the way the hose would route) and confirm whether the standard 15' hose length will work for you, or if you need the longer 25' length.
- This kit is only rated for B20 Bio-Diesel. This is primarily due to the B20 rating Baldwin places on their filters and not the provided hose. We are not aware of any appropriate pre-pump style filters that will work with higher concentrations of Bio-Diesel. If you are running Bio-Diesel, please be mindful of your filter service intervals and periodically check your hoses for signs of damage from the fuel.
- This kit is NOT required with installations utilizing an AirDog or FASS.
- E-SERIES VAN: This kit does NOT fit the E-Series Van due to the different configuration of the fuel tank. The van fuel tank has a baffled pan around the pickup assembly that interferes with the extended return, and the installation instructions were written for a Pickup/Excursion. If you wish to use this kit in your van, you will NOT be able to use the extended return tube, and your installation may differ somewhat from the instructions due to the location of the van fuel tank and differences in the van frame (the kit does fit).

7.3 Excursion fuel pickup unit?

Need to fix my 7.3 Excursion pickup unit would like to do the hutch mode on it but there is a snag the fuel level sensor is broke also, that electrical copper wiper is destroyed in it. From what I can tell you cant just get the fuel sending parts you have to replace the entire unit? So here is my questions. Does the trucks use that same fuel level sensor part and I can just change the float from the excursion? Anybody know if the 6.0 Excursion fuel pickup unit will fit in the 7.3 Excursion? Much cheaper than the 7.3 and the hutch mod is done, just will need to add a inline filter before the fuel pump.
I’d did the RiffRaff pickup in both of my Excursions. Very very nice unit.

fuel sending unit (in tank)

I had a new fuel pump put on at the dealer, and they stated that the PSI for the line was still to low. They suggested that (not sure on this part) the fuel sending unit, in the tank, be replaced to complete this job. I just priced that unit at $490 (part only)... Can this unit not be reconditioned? Or alternatives?
Sounds like it would have to be clogged if there is really anything wrong with it. There is a screen on the bottom that could hypothetically be clogged if a lot of bad fuel or contaminants have been run through the tank. Take a look at the installation instructions for this linked product for images of the unit and the pickup screen. If it were me I'd install this product rather than replace the sending unit. It likely could just be cleaned though. ITP 7.3L Fuel Tank / Pre-Pump Kit
If your guage is working I don't see a reason to replace the unit. I don't recall anything in there that does anything except mixing, pickup, and gage. I had to drop mine to fix a broken wire on the gage sending unit. It is acutally not that bad to do yourself. get as empty as possible. I supported the tank with straps and then lowered little by little. You have to drop it a little bit in order to get to the fule lines and wires. Once it is down a little you can disconnect them. You do need the fuel line disconnect tool which is abot $10. I could probably drop the tank in about an hour now that I have done it once.
There are actually a couple of fine screens inside the mixing chamber that may be clogged. This is besides the coarse screen at the bottom of the pickup foot. You can disassemble the mixing chamber and inspect/clean the screens after dropping the tank. (Other's pull the bed off for access, but that takes two or three helpers or a hoist.) But I agree with Honeydew, that if you pull it out, do the in-tank mod and ditch the mixing chamber. What pressure were they measuring to tell you the line pressure is too low? If it's at the fuel bowl, it needs to be a minimum of 45 psi, and it should hold that pressure under load. It could also be a problem with a weak fuel pressure regulator spring. That's right behind the connection for the fuel return line at the filter. Ford (or International) sells a repair kit for the regulator that'd be a lot cheaper than replacing the sending unit. To bad this can not be done for the Vans.... the kit is for all But the van..
My truck last summer got so clogged that it tried to suck itself in and I had pieces floating on top of the diesel in the tank
question 2 So... just put in the ITP product and then this mod replaces the "sending unit"... A better solution for only $160 instead of replacement at $490... Too good to be true...

Thanks.. I guess the ITP kit and a little DIY is my fix.. any suggestions on how to test my PSI on the rail b4/after....? I dont have anything for that...
I'm building my own ITP kit, and I was wondering if someone that has the kit or remembers pretty accurately the distances to each of the 90 degree bends in the return fuel line extension. I have to bend it at work prior to installation at the house (can't steal work tools), and I was just wondering if someone could help me out. Help prior to Thursday would be great. I would just call ITP, but then I'd feel wrong asking them info about their kit if I didn't buy one. Please, help. Thanks in advance.
I just had one in my hands yesterday but it's in the tank now. I'd say 3" from the fitting, 3" across, and 8" long. It had good clearance from the float arm and there would be no drawback to erring on the side of too long by a bit. You might be able to derive lengths visually from the pics on the guzzles how to by using the known length of the compression fitting as a scale.
HoneyDew - thanks, man! When you say there'd be no harm in erroring on the long side, do you mean before the first bend and between the first and second or do you mean on the long piece going past the float? In other words - would 4" to the first bend and 4" across be sufficient or were you saying 10" long would be fine to use? I bought a 36" section to bend.
Yes, 4" to the first and 4" would be fine because those just take it toward and away from the float and float arm respectively. There is a step toward the rear of the tank that it might hit if the long stretch was really long but you could nip that off with a hacksaw if it were an issue during install.
