Other popular hikes include the Shoreline Trail around the Grand Etang Lake; the Seven Sisters Falls hike; and the Mount Qua Qua Trail, a three-hour uphill trek with views over the forest. Along the trails, you can spot many species of birds, orchids, and towering rainforest trees.

The inner harbor and anchorage, known as the Carenage, is the lively hub of St. George's. This horseshoe-shaped point of interest is a lovely place to wander along the waterfront and soak up daily life.

Watch fisherman unload their catch from colorful wooden schooners, spy locals haggling for the fresh catch of the day, and witness supplies being unloaded from container ships. There is a lot of action happening at this busy attraction.

The best time to visit St. George's Market Square is on a Saturday morning, when the market really bustles. Set in the heart of downtown, a mere block from the Cruise Ship Terminal, Market Square is home to the region's best spice market and is considered one of the city's top attractions.

This is where you'll find heaps of fresh fruits and veggies overflowing their baskets in a kaleidoscope of colors. Bring your appetite, not to mention a camera, as you'll want to enjoy these local goods in every way possible.

The earlier you arrive, the more selection you'll have, but don't worry, there's no shortage of tasty and creative things on sale here. From spices to papaya to jewelry and touristy kitsch, you're sure to find something to excite your inner shopaholic.

Fort Frederick offers stunning views of St. George's and the sea. You'll find it at the end of winding hairpin turns atop Richmond Hill.

The fort has an interesting history. The French began construction of Fort Frederick in 1779, and the British then completed it in 1791. It is nicknamed the "backwards facing fort" because its cannons face inland instead of out to sea, thanks to the French who feared a surprise land attack after they used this successful strategy with the British. In 1850, the fort was abandoned completely until it was later occupied by the Grenadian military.

A small entrance fee gives you access to the site, but the views are worth it.

Morne Rouge Bay is usually a quieter alternative to Grand Anse Beach. It's located one bay south of Grand Anse, near the southern tip of Grenada. Calm, jade-green seas slosh upon this one-and-a-half-kilometer crescent of white sand making this one of the safest beaches in Grenada for swimming .

Bring the kids along for a family-friendly day by the sea or settle on the sand with your loved one for an amorous couples' day out. No matter who you're traveling with, you won't be disappointed by a few hours spent at this lovely beach!

Resort restaurants along the beach offer snacks, and the lush foliage fringing the beach provides plenty of shady areas to sit and relax. You can also rent sun loungers here, as well as paddleboards and snorkel equipment.

Levera National Park, on the northeastern shore of the island, offers some beautiful and dramatic scenery where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic.

You'll find some inviting, relatively undeveloped beaches here. Backed by cliffs, coral-sand Bathway Beach offers pretty views of the pointy-peaked Sugar Loaf (Levera Island) and other islands in the distance, while a natural offshore reef affords good protection for swimming. This means it's an ideal beach for families with young children to spend a day.

Levera Beach is also pretty, with less visitors than Bathway. Sea turtles frequently nest on the beaches here.

Also of interest is Levera Pond , a water-filled, ancient volcanic crater and an important habitat for birds such as black-necked stilts and herons.

Stop by the visitor center at the entrance to the park before you visit to find out more about these important habitats.

On the Atlantic side of the island, La Sagesse lies on the former estate of Lord Brownlow, Queen Elizabeth's cousin. His beachside residence has been renovated and turned into a romantic hotel and restaurant fronting a golden-sand beach, with great swimming in the protected bay.

The restaurant here is a lovely spot for lunch, with locally caught seafood dishes and produce plucked fresh from the organic garden. After lunch, you can explore the nature trails that lead up through the windswept hills, with pretty views over the ocean.

The area is also great for birding. Many avian species make their home in the area's scrub forests, mangroves, and salt ponds. This is a fun day trip far from the crowds on the well-trodden tourist track.

Five kilometers northeast of Carriacou, Petite Martinique is even quieter than its neighbor and equally beautiful. Fishing is the mainstay of this tiny island, and you can watch the locals haul in their catch, or stroll along the beaches and chat with boat builders as they work.

This is truly an island getaway, with few tourist facilities except a couple of guesthouses and family-run restaurants, but you'll find plenty of local color. Many boaters stop here to dine at one of the island's restaurants or hike up the piton, the island's highest peak, for fabulous views.

From Carriacou, you can catch a ferry or water taxi across to the island.

Devote an hour or two to exploring St. George's marina (known as the Carenage), where you'll find plenty of restaurants serving up local cuisine with a side of spectacular views. But there's much more to this city than its postcard-worthy appearance. St. George's serves as a great place to get a whirlwind introduction to Grenadian culture. River Antoine has been churning out bottles of rum since 1785, making it the oldest functioning water-powered distillery in the Caribbean. After the tour, you'll be treated to a free sample, but be warned: This isn't your average liquor. "They make a rum so strong that it cannot be taken home on an airplane," writes one TripAdvisor user. "After trying it, I can understand why!" (River Antoine rum is produced in strengths of 138- and 150-proof. Should you want to bring some home, a less potent version is available for purchase.)

Still, the Belmont Estate's history isn't all sugar, spice and everything nice. The plantation also holds a somber history of chattel slavery. Up until 1834 (the year enslaved people were emancipated in Grenada), hundreds of men, women and children were held on the estate to harvest sugar, which was the plantation's primary crop at the time. Many lived much of their lives at Belmont; some were born and others died as slaves. During the emancipation, almost 200 enslaved people were freed from the property. Consider this context when touring the estate to honor the lives of those who were enslaved.

Located in the heart of St. George's , Market Square welcomes visitors and locals alike looking for handmade crafts, fresh produce, and, of course, spices. One TripAdvisor user calls the spice market the "best smelling market that I have ever been to!" However, some recent visitors warn that the vendors can be fairly aggressive.

You'll find Market Square at the foot of Young Street. Weekends—Saturdays specifically—are the best times to go, as the marketplace bustles more than usual.

Weaving trails delve deep into the landscape, heading to the lookouts of Mount Qua Qua’s summit, around the lush banks of Grand Etang Lake itself, and through rugged volcanic valleys where hummingbirds and the scents of vanilla and nutmeg drift through the airs.

4. Enjoy a local BBQ at Roger’s Barefoot Beach Bar

For a sleepy Sunday of spicy jerk and local Carib fish barbeque treats, be sure to make a beeline across to tiny little Hog Island.

Here, crowds of islanders gather each week to enjoy one of the best grills Grenada has to offer, all whilst cooling off in the shallow waters that surround Roger’s bamboo-built timber bar and its sun-splashed deck.

You can rest assured there’ll be plenty of rum to wash things down with, not to mention oodles of chances to chat with locals and other travelers alike.

Oh, and did we mention that the Barefoot Beach Bar can only be accessed by boat?

5. Wander the historic streets of St George’s

St. George’s is a truly gorgeous town to behold. Cascading down the spice-scented hills on the west coast of the island, it’s dotted with the remains of gorgeous Gothic cathedrals and pretty homes and buildings that shimmer and shine in their whitewashed and vibrant Caribbean colours under the sun.

Travelers flock to the capital by their bucket load too, many of whom head straight for the Market Square, following the fragrances of nutmeg and vanilla, clove and cinnamon – all of which are sold by the bucket load.

Other sights include the cannon-topped walls of Fort George and the pretty parliament buildings.

6. Feel the colonial conflict at Fort Frederick

With more than 250 years of history coalescing between its stony walls and cannon-ready crenulations, Fort Frederick has its feet firmly placed in the high ages of Grenada’s colonial past.

It’s most certainly the best-preserved example of a European fortification on the island, still standing like a limpet on the top of Richmond Hill, just a stone’s throw back from the capital at St George’s.

The entire citadel is also joined at the hip to the nearby bulwarks of Fort Matthew, while short guided tours offer an understanding of the French and English powers that once ruled the halls here.

Oh, and there are also gorgeous views of the south-western coast to boot!

7. Dive down to the Underwater Sculpture Park

A world first and surely one of the most unique attractions on the island of Grenada, the Underwater Sculpture Park can be found below the Caribbean waves, rising in an eerie and haunting array of human effigies and carvings from the sand-bottomed seabed of Moliniere Bay.

The exhibition includes life-sized human figures and still life objects, evoking themes like the Cuban Revolution, modern ennui and the life of an artist to name just three.

The site is best viewed as a diver, and can easily be reached by boat out of the harbors of St George’s.

8. Enjoy seclusion on Morne Rouge Bay

While little Morne Rouge sits only a stone’s throw from the popular sands of aforementioned Grand Anse Beach, there’s something more secluded, romantic and quiet about this little inlet on the south-western coast.

Without the booming crowds of its near neighbor to the north, a trip here promises opportunities to recline under the shade of a swaying coconut palm, and for solitary evening swims under the pink-red glow of the Caribbean sunset.

There’s still a smattering of beach huts and beer bars here – so a swinging hammock in the shade and a cocktail are never too far away!

9. Photograph the Royal Mount Carmel Waterfalls

The Royal Mount Carmel Waterfalls can be found forever crashing over a bulbous cliff of carved and moss-speckled rock in the middle of the verdant rainforests around Grenville.

At a whopping 21 meters in height, they are the tallest of their kind on the Spice Isle as a whole.

That makes for one truly photogenic natural wonder, and today groups of visitors often make the journey along the winding jungle paths that delve inland from the east coast to catch a glimpse of the wonder.

And what a journey it is! Bamboo thickets and cocoa groves bloom on the side of the track, while chachalaca birds and mango hummers flit between the boughs.

10. Go birding in the Levera National Park

With the cone-shaped green tops of the Sandy Islands and Sugarloaf Isles peppering the deep blue of the waters out at sea, and great swathes of wild mangrove fringing the shorelines all around, there’s no question that the landscapes of the Levera National Park are wondrously beautiful.

They unfold along the rugged northern reaches of Grenada, offering visitors a glimpse at the Spice Isle’s more untouched and undeveloped side (save a few failed resort hotels here and there, unfortunately). The main attraction has to be the fauna though, particularly of the flying kind.

Expect waterfowl and snipes, sandpipers and herons, all gathering in and around that swampy flatland lagoon at the reserve’s very heart.

11. See where the nickname comes from at the Dougaldston Spice Estate

Grenada didn’t get its moniker from nowhere.

Hailed as the Spice Isle for its vast output of nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla and clove over the centuries, there are still plenty of places here to see the tradition and heritage of spice cultivation in motion.

The Dougaldston Spice Estate in St. George’s is arguably the best, with its vast depots and industrial halls complete with cocoa-drying machines and nutmeg processing conveyers.

Regular guided tours will reveal the processes behind the mass production of Grenada’s most iconic export, and there are plenty of chances to purchase local spices besides.

12. Sail across to Carriacou (or Petit Martinique)

Strewn out like fragments of their big Grenadine brother in the Caribbean Sea just to the north-east of the Spice Isle proper, these two tiny islets are also definitely worth the visit.

Regular ferries and catamarans depart out of St. George’s, dropping travelers on the shores of untrodden Carriacou.

Undeveloped and much less busy than Grenada itself, the green and hilly land here is dotted with the occasional colonial fortress and off-the-beaten-track hotel, while beaches like Paradise and Anse La Roche come virtually without booming crowds and other tourists.

Oh, and Carriacou is also famed for its rum, with a centurion of shops touting the spirit on the island – you’ve been warned!

13. Sample the local kitchen at BB’s Crabback

A casual, laid-back eatery between the downtown streets of St George’s (on the bends of Grand Etang Road no less, just below the towers of George Fort), BB’s Crabback is one of the finest spots in the capital for sampling bona fide Grenadine cuisine.

Colourful dishes fill the menu with a real Arawak vibrancy.

There are king prawns doused in mango, there’s chicken marinated in herbs; colossal cuts of barracuda fresh from the sea, and seared tuna steaks with a BBQ edge besides.

If in doubt, get the house speciality of BB’s Signature: tender goat meat sloshing in a coconut curry!

14. Get in the sporting spirit at the West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre

Granted, the West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but it certainly offers a glimpse at one of the Caribbean’s best-loved and most sacred sports and pastimes: cricket.

Dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of all aspects of the West Indian game, the institution has everything from old willow bats used by the likes of Brian Lara and Sir Garfield Sobers, to test caps and team outfits from as far back as the high cricketing days of the 1800s.

In short: a perfect spot if you want to get acquainted with Grenada’s reverent love for this old competitive tradition!

15. Feel the romance at The Beach House Restaurant

Spilling out onto the powdery sands of Grand Anse Beach, between groves of waxy palm trees and jungle ferns, The Beach House Restaurant remains one of the most acclaimed gastronomic hotspots on the entire Spice Isle.

The menu is a mouth-watering array of fisherman’s broth and Cajun BBQ shrimp, seared tuna fillets and spiced up scallops, while the catch of the day is guaranteed to be amongst the freshest in Grenada! However, it’s the setting here that really makes the experience, with sweeping views of the bay and panoramic sunsets that are the perfect accompaniment to that evening meal!

Located west of Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada is a beautiful island nation filled with picture-perfect harbors, sandy beaches, rich history, and a lush landscape.

Things to do in Grenada

First discovered by the Spanish in 1523, Grenada Island has a checkered past. France and Britain fought over it through the 17th and 18th centuries. The British had ownership until 1974 when Grenada gained its independence.

Today it is a thriving tourism mecca in the Caribbean Sea. There are so many things to do in Grenada you’ll want to go back again and again. These are all the reasons you should visit Grenada right now!

1. Grand Anse Beach

Forty-Five sandy beaches frame the island of Grenada. And all are open to the public. These include the world-famous black sand beaches and one of my favorites is the renowned three-kilometer  Grand Anse Beach.

Grand Anse Beach is a two mile stretch of a white sand beach lined with hotels, restaurants and colorful fishing boats. Grand Anse Beach is about 6 miles from St. George’s on the southwest coast of Grenada.

2. Other Grenada Beaches I recommend

If you are in need of seclusion, rent a four-wheel-drive vehicle and hit l’Ance aux Epines, a white beach on the South of the Island. St. Patrick’s is another good choice for a secluded beach destination located at the north of the island and St. David located just a few km east of St. George’s.

3. Morne Rouge Beach

For quieter beach options, Morne Rouge Beach has calm waters. It’s very close to Grand Anse Beach, but it feels a world away. Located on the Southwestern coast, it’s the perfect spot for sunset.

4. Diamond Chocolate Factory

If you love chocolate, Grenada is the place. Diamond Chocolate Factory is a former rum distillery that is now home to  Jouvay Chocolate.  It is one of the more commercial chocolates found on the island. It is one of the best places to shop for chocolate to bring back home.

5. House of Chocolate

Another stop is the House of Chocolate in St. George’s. This quaint chocolate shop with a museum has a tasting menu and a cafe where you can sip chocolate drinks or eat locally made pastries. Don’t forget to add a side nutmeg or coconut ice cream to your chocolate cake if you order this delicious treat.

6. Belmont Estate

Belmont Estate  is a destination unto itself and a must-do when visiting Grenada. But it is also for chocolate lovers too. If you travel to Belmont Estate, take the “reservation-only” Bean to Bar Chocolate Tour.

It encompasses the entire life cycle of a chocolate bar from harvesting the bean in the cocoa fields, just a few steps away. The tour also includes a three-course lunch that includes chocolate.

No matter which tour you take, rest assured you’ll be rewarded with a generous sampling of chocolates plus a rich history of agrotourism.

Like its Caribbean neighbors, Grenada is a major rum producer. The island is home to several distilleries including Grenada Distillers, who make Clarks Court Rum.

In operation since 1937, it’s the island’s largest and best-known distillery. They make and distribute spirits including spiced rum, rum punch, coconut rum and many more. In the showroom, you can sample a number of rums and shop for unique flavors.

8. River Antoine Rum Distillery

You can also try for a sought-after bottle of the famous River Antoine Rum. The River Antoine Rum distillery produces less than its demand, but the wait for a prized bottle is well worth a visit.

9. Island Spice Tour

Named the Spice Island, Grenada is home to many spices of the Caribbean, including the most famous of all Grenadian Spices, Nutmeg. It’s used in local recipes and products like Nutmeg juice, Nutmeg ice cream, perfumes, soaps, and beauty products.

Grenada has one of the most fertile soils in the Caribbean rife with nutmeg, cocoa, and soursop, banana palms, guava and ginger lilies.

Learn how these spices are harvested and processed with one of the many island tours. Check out the Gouyave Nutmeg Processing Station, where nutmeg is processed and exported around the world.

10. Laura’s Herb and Spice Garden

For a unique experience, visit Laura’s Herb and Spice Garden, a favorite spot to see how everything is grown on the island. Just walk the lush trails to enjoy exotic aromas of fresh herbs and spices.

In the later part of the year, you can see wild sorrel plants which are used in juice drinks and Rum. Stop by the gift shop and grab spices to go.

There are so many accommodations from which to choose, ranging from small private homes to all-inclusive resorts.

11. Dougaldston Spice Estate

Dougalston Spice Estate is an historic plantation that still grows cocoa, nutmeg, and cloves by traditional means. You can take tours and purchase spices.

12. BB’s Crabback Restaurant

Grenada’s cuisine infused with its spices is to die for.  Here are five great places to eat in Grenada. Anywhere you dine in Granada you’re guaranteed fresh cuisine infused with local spices. Fish, lobster and crab are on every menu along with steak, chicken and other assorted meats.

The menu at  BB’s Crabback  is filled with Caribbean favorites. Try the whole Lobster Calypso. A generous meal of lobster seasoned with red, green and yellow peppers in a saffron and citrus sauce will tempt your taste buds.

13. Secret Harbour Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

You can’t go wrong dining at the  Secret Harbour Restaurant . You’ll find seafood appetizers like crab cakes, crispy shrimp or mains of steak frites and red snapper. They also make delicious craft cocktail crafted with local ingredients.

14. Belmont Estate Restaurant

After a tour, enjoy lunch at Belmont Estates where you will enjoy a three-course meal from plantain soup to buffet of fish, rice, salads, beef and vegetable. Everything is grown on the estate and no matter your choice you won’t be disappointed.

After your meal, enjoy one of their delicious desserts like Nutmeg cake or Chocolate ice cream cake. No alcohol is served on the premises as the owners are Seventh Day Adventists.

15. Scuba Dive with Dive Grenada

If you crave a little adventure, try snorkeling or diving with  Dive Grenada . This small, award-winning dive shop run by owners Phil, Helen, and their two pups is  a must visit on Grand Anse beach. It’s just a short boat ride to all the main dive sites.

16. River Tubing

River tubing is another adventure, but for the less enthusiastic try an hour-long scenic ride down the Balthazar River with Adventure Granada.

17. Snorkel the Underwater Sculpture Park

Visit the Molinere Bay underwater sculpture park. The first of its kind; 75 statues were constructed from concrete and steel to create this enchanting underwater sculpture park.

They are the vision of Jason deCaires Taylor, an underwater photographer, sculptor, and environmentalist. Enjoy this incredible site by diving, snorkeling or from a glass bottom boat.

18. St. George’s – The Capital City of Grenada

St. George’s exemplifies the best of a Caribbean port town. It has a picturesque harbor, historic forts, and a market displaying all the sights, smells and tastes of Grenada. St. George’s marinais unofficially dubbed the most beautiful in the Caribbean.

One of the best things to do in Grenada is to take an afternoon to walk the colorful streets of St. George’s and explore the local culture. Stop at Market Square in the heart of St. George’s to grab souvenirs, spices, produce and handmade crafts. The scent is intoxicating.

19. Fort Frederick

There are also many historic sites in Grenada like Fort Frederick. Fort Frederick is Grenada’s best-preserved fort dating back to 1779.

20. Fort George

Fort George dates back to 1706 and was built as a battery for the French. It is one of the best places in Grenada for beautiful views of St. George and the Coast. It can be reached by walking up from town making stops along the way to view the plaques and to see the old canons and viewpoints.

21. Grand Etang National Park

Grenada is blessed with acres upon acres of wildlife-rich rainforest. Grand Etang National Park and Forest Reserve is an island must-visit. In this beautiful forest, you’ll find the Grenada dove (the national bird) and the rare Mona monkey. Take some bananas in case you spot the monkeys, they’ll come closer if offered one.

22. Grand Etang Lake

Located within Grand Etang National Park is Grand Etang Lake. This crater lake has hiking trails leading up to the summit of Mount Qua Qua.

23. Levera National Park

Levera National Park on Grenada’s northeastern coast was designated as a Wetland of International Importance. Levera national park sees few visitors and a hike to the beach is worth the 30 minute to complete seclusion. It’s an important bird habitat and sea turtle nesting area.

24. Annandale Falls

Be sure to check out the gorgeous Annandale Falls. In the lush rainforest, this massive waterfall collects in a pool where you can indulge in a relaxing swim. It’s a popular stop for cruise ships so be warned that it may get busy when they’re in port.

25. La Sagesse Nature Centre

Birders will love La Sagesse Nature Centre. Located on Grenada’s Southwest Coast 25 minutes from St. George’s and Grande Anse Beach, visitors can take a guided tour of the centre free of charge daily.

26. Grenada National Museum

Located in an historic building dating back to the 1700s, the Grenada National Museum in St. George’s is worth a visit. It traces the history of Grenada through the first inhabitants, plantation economy including slavery, first inhabitants, its whaling history and fishing culture.

27. Grenada Independence

Independence is celebrated every February across the island with the national dish of oil down, a one pot meal of salted meat, chicken, dumplings, breadfruit, and callaloo.

At first glance, Grenada may look like your typical lush Caribbean Island, but this paradise is so much more than beautiful beaches and friendly locals.

It’s easy to see why many come and fall in love with Grenada. From its welcoming, friendly people to pristine beaches, you’ll want to explore every facet of this island.

28. True Blue Bay Resort Street Food Festival

True Blue Bay Resort on Wednesday nights is the place to be on the Island. Locals and visitors descend to enjoy the magnificent Street Food Festival.

There are over 30 vendors supplying every dish imaginable from jerk chicken to pasta and seafood. They also have local ice cream and a local band playing the most incredible music. You’ll dance till your feet hurt.

Where to Stay in Grenada

True Blue Bay Resort

We stayed at the  True Blue Bay Resort , charming waterfront property with brightly colored blue buildings. There you can choose from villas, suites, and rooms depending on the experience you are looking for.

Staying in a bi-level waterfront suite with beautiful views of the marina and ocean – was delightful. It had a relaxing color scheme, kitchen, eco-friendly amenities, and shower stall.

This hotel has activities from a chocolate and rum tasting to yoga or diving. If you just want to relax, check out their serene day spa.

A buffet breakfast is available to guests which include eggs, pastries, and fresh fruits daily. There are two swimming pools, one geared to family fun.

Dodgy Dock bar is the evening gathering spot for guests and locals, dinner is served in an adjoining area.

Calabash Hotel

For an upscale lunch, stop at the  Calabash Hotel. This is also a great place to stay on Granada. After lunch stroll the grounds of this luxury hotel complete with gorgeous gardens and a swimming pool straight out of Architectural Digest.

From passion fruit mojitos to tapas style dishes – your taste buds will thank you. The Fried Calamari with sweet lime & chili mayo and the Spicy Fish Cake with goat cheese and beets, really hit the spot.

Best Time to visit Grenada

• The best time to visit Grenada is December. High Season is January to April. It is warm and sunny during these months. But prices are at a premium.
• October and November are shoulder season in Grenada and the weather is good. You’ll find good deals during this time.

• Grenada uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar 1USD = 2.70 ECD
• Check  XE Currency Converter  for up to date rates.
• We also suggest using an ATM when landing at the airport in Grenada to get out money for cash purchases
• Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels.

Getting Around Grenada

• It is best to get around Grenada by rental car.

Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting Grenada for the first time. Grenada and the Grenadines is a small trio of islands in the Caribbean , near the West Indies and quite far south nearer to South America than Florida.

I spent a total of five days on the island, staying right on Grand Anse beach and filled the days with sun, sand and relaxation.

In today’s post, I’m sharing all the best things to do in Grenada!

The Best Things to Do in Grenada

While researching for the trip, I didn’t find much out there. I’m not quite sure why Grenada doesn’t seem to receive much traffic (it also gets often confused for Granada , Spain) but now having been, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The island is perfect for diving and sailing while on the interior, Grenada boasts a lush national park and rain forest  so you get a great mix of beach and jungle – which was fascinating to me.  Most people seem to do a quick day stopover aboard a Caribbean cruise ship but I also noticed lots of British expats with homes on the island!

Here are just some of the amazing things to do on Grenada!

1. Swim on Grand Anse Beach

Most of the luxury hotels in Grenada are located along Grand Anse, a beautiful beach with lush palm trees, soft white sand and gentle waves.

Our hotel, the Radisson Grand Anse , had some of the most beautiful landscaping that I’ve ever seen and lots of waterfall pools, swim up pools, bridges and hammocks.

It was a paradise that we didn’t want to leave! You can read a full review of the property in our earlier  blog post here .

Beaches in Grenada are public so you’ll find lots of locals relaxing, tanning and swimming! It’s such a fun atmosphere and you can even walk into some of the other hotel properties if you want to snorkel, rent a boat or scuba dive .

2. Eat Authentic Jerk Chicken

For the best local food, head to ‘Wall Street’ a small strip of restaurants and stores. There you’ll find a Caribbean Grill Master restaurant with amazing jerk chicken, kebabs, Carib beer and ice cream smoothies!

Our advice?

Ask for an ice cream milkshake combining chocolate and nutmeg. Grenada is known as the ‘Spice Island’ since it exports so many rich spices, including rich dark chocolate cacao beans and nutmeg. The shake is delicious!!

3. Explore St. George

The bustling capital of St. George is a great spot to have lunch and do a short walking tour. Walk uphill (bring sturdy travel shoes ) to see the  Carenage , fort, market and churches. From the  Radisson   (or any hotel on Grand Anse beach), it’s a short 15 minute drive into town.

Fort George sits above the town center, originally built for strategic fortification to guard the harbor entrance. This is a great spot for a good view and to take some pictures of the colorful houses below!

To get to St. George, you can take a taxi but we thought it was more fun to hop on the crazy, loud and fun local minibuses (bus #1) to get to Saint George’s. The minivans stop right outside the hotel on the main road every couple minutes.

Or, if you want a complete experience, book this guided tour of St. George that includes an English speaking guide as well as trips to a spice plantation and distillery! You’ll get round trip transportation taken care of and even get to taste Grenada’s local specialties: rum and chocolate !

4. Try Local Fruits like Soursup

In St. George, there’s a small mall near the cruise dock where you can pick up some souvenirs.

Don’t miss the delicious frozen fruit smoothie stand where they whip up fruit smoothies of every kind. Try the  soursup  smoothie if you’re adventurous (it’s been studied and found to help fight cancer!)

5. Climb Seven Sisters Waterfall

In Grenada’s center, you’ll find Grand Etang volcanic lake and rainforest trails. We took a hike to see Seven Sisters waterfall which was a challenging uphill climb!

6. Visit Concord Waterfall

Next, we took a second visit to Concord Falls, which is much more easily accessible by car. If you have time it’s fun to do both – Seven Sisters is more remote and feels like you’ve stumbled on a local hideout while Concord waterfall is a larger singular fall with some tourist infrastructure.

7. Swim in Annandale Falls

Finally, Grenada has a third waterfall, Annandale Falls, a picturesque grotto where 30 feet of water cascades down into a small pool. For convenience, we booked an all day tour  that included a drive to take us around to all these picturesque waterfalls! 

8. Visit River Antoine Rum Factory

Almost every Caribbean island produces great rum, and Grenada is no exception!

River Antoine Rum Distillery dates back to 1785. It gets its name from the River Antoine, and is the oldest functioning water powered distillery left in the Caribbean! Despite the factory being ancient enough to be an antique, it remains a working distillery today. 

We loved tasting the rum here – in small doses though, because this stuff is 75% proof! The strong rum is only available in Grenada so pick up a couple bottles as souvenirs for friends and family back home who love the potent stuff.

The factory is located on Grenada’s northeast coast, in the parish of St. Patrick, so it’s convenient to include this as part of an all day tour of the island. 

9. Tour a Nutmeg Plant

I really enjoyed the island drive as you get to see how diverse and lush Grenada is.

Mangoes and banana trees sprout right on the side of the road, footpaths are overgrown with tiny pineapple shrubs and beautiful inland mansions and old shells of houses remain from Hurricane Ivan.

Don’t leave the Spice Island without a proper spice tour.

We visited a nutmeg plant , all locally operated, and learned about all of the island’s main agricultural exports. Nutmeg is one of Grenada’s top spice exports and is used in everything from your basic seasoning to mace, massage oil, syrup… even garden mulch and nail varnish!

Local nutmeg plants are a main employer on the island and all the employees were incredibly friendly.

10. Stop by the Chocolate Museum

Come here to learn about the island’s most delicious dark chocolate export. There’s artisan chocolate pieces for sale and ice cream shakes as well.

We bought a ton of chocolate bars to take home – my favorites are the salty-licious 71% dark chocolate and the nib-a-licious 60% dark bars!

11. Go Scuba Diving

You definitely have to take advantage of the island’s pristine diving waters and spend a morning or two underneath the sea.

We scuba dived every morning of our trip, exploring different reefs each time and couldn’t get enough! We saw turtles, lots of local reef fish and the world’s only underwater sculpture park, all of which were a treat.

Some of Grenada’s most popular dive sites include:

• Flamingo Bay
• Bianca C Wreck

Monday through Friday seemed to be the touristy days, and frequent stops are made to the  Underwater Sculpture Park  (the first in the world!) where you can see sunken sculptures and local reef life intertwined.

Advanced divers probably want to dive on the weekend, where the expats and locals take diving seriously and head to deeper waters like Grenada wreck sites. We’ve mentally bookmarked them for when we get our advanced certification!

12. Go Sailing

There are many charter options in Grenada available for hire and most opt for a one way cruise southward starting from St Lucia and ending in Grenada, in order to travel windward.

13. Hop over to Carriacou Island & Petite Martinique

If you have a week or longer, budget some time to hop over to neighboring Carriacou island to explore for a couple days.

The easiest way to is fly (flights are offered daily from the main island to Carriacou and Petite Martinique) but there are also daily ferry options and the slower mail boats, which can go to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

14. Have Lunch at Belmont Estate

Belmont Heritage Estate is a historic cocoa plantation that dates back to the 1700s.

The large property includes a museum and a modern day restaurant. Take a guided tour to learn about the original Scottish owners, present day Grenadian owners and relax long enough to enjoy lunch !

15. Experience Fish Friday

We didn’t get to try this, but we heard about it often from locals and wished we had!

Fish Friday takes place (you guessed it) every Friday in the town of Gouyave, a small village on Grenada’s west coast. The town is well known for its seafood and is the fishing hub of Grenada.

Book transportation here to take you into the street festival, wander the food stalls and listen to the live music! Fish Friday is a Grenadian tradition so it’s a great way to mingle and experience the local culture.

What kind of food can you expect? Freshly caught seafood like lobster, conch and shrimp, jerked marlin, fish cakes and refreshing beers. 

Best Time to Visit Grenada

The steamy tropical climate is tempered by northeast trade winds for a year round balmy climate. I spoke to locals who recommended January to April as the driest and best time to visit (rainy season occurs from June to November).

Though if you’re looking to experience a Caribbean party like no other, the raucous August Carnival is a brilliant time to be in Grenada.

From New York City, you can easily hop on a direct flight to Grenada’s Maurice Bishop International Airport, making it an easy destination to visit, whether you have a long weekend or a full week! Set a flight alert here to be notified of deals.

One thing we recommend is to book your transportation in advance. When we landed, we were immediately swarmed by taxi operators as we left the airport and we didn’t have any local currency to pay them. Grenada uses Eastern Caribbean dollars – try to exchange currency in advance if you can!

If you want a seamless arrival and departure, you can book a taxi private comfortable transfer here to pick you up and drop you off directly to your hotel. They’ll pick up from both the airport and cruise terminal, so it’s really convenient!

Where to Stay in Grenada

The best place to stay in Grenada is on Grand Anse Beach . It’s centrally located on the island and where you’ll find all the high end resorts. The capital is a short drive away, while the beach is at your feet! For more of a secluded feel, head south to Morne Rouge.

Radisson Grenada  

We stayed here and loved every second! It’s nothing fancy, but it is clean and comfortable and has extensive lush grounds as well as a prime spot right on the beach. It’s near the top of the hotel strip, so you’re within walking distance to restaurants, scuba schools and bus pick ups to head into the capital.

This hotel was right next door to the Radisson and where we walked over each morning to the  EcoDive scuba shop . We didn’t see the rooms, but the grounds were similar to the Radisson’s and also had beachfront access.

Getting Around

Grenada is a truly beautiful island and quite unique in the Caribbean in that is has a rainforest interior and beach exterior. You could spend your entire trip laying out on the beach, but you’d be missing out if you didn’t at least see the waterfalls, spice plantations and beautiful estates in the interior!

If you want to experience as much as possible, within a limited period of time, it’s easiest to book a tour. This is what we did to see Grenada’s interior and what we would definitely recommend for cruise visitors.

Here’s a couple of the most popular tours in Grenada:

Grenada All Day Tour 

This full day tour will show you everything beautiful that there is to experience in Grenada. With round trip transportation from your hotel or cruise ship, you’ll tour St George, a spice plantation, the River Antoine rum distillery and also visit Concord Waterfall and Grand Etang rainforest .

If you’re only in Grenada for a short time, there’s no better way to get a complete picture of the island than this! We did this tour and especially loved learning about Grenada’s history, sampling rum and tasting local chocolate.

7 Sisters Waterfall

Grenada’s waterfalls feel blissfully un-touristy. They’re hidden deep on the island’s lush interior and surrounded by green forest, local vegetables and muddy climbing paths. A great way to experience Grenada properly is to see 7 sisters waterfall and Concord Waterfalls , especially if you enjoy hiking!

Belmont Estate Heritage Tour

Belmont is a working cocoa plantation . The rural site is home to a historic museum, cocoa bean fermentary and a great lunch buffet! The food is always fresh, delicious and authentically Grenadian.

Local Transportation in Grenada

On the other hand, if you prefer to stay at your all inclusive resort and just want a short half day trip to see St. George, you can take advantage of the local minibus. #1 passes between the beach strip and the capital and is what the locals use!

The pick up is right in front of the Radisson, so it’s convenient if you’re staying at the hotel.

Note : this is a bumpy ride in a local minivan. It gets crowded, wasn’t air-conditioned and the drivers often like to blast music. We took it a couple times and thought it was fun, but it probably isn’t the transportation mode for everyone. All the locals are friendly and it’s definitely safe.

We took a direct flight from New York into Maurice Bishop International airport (GND) via Jet Blue. For any Caribbean destination, Jet Blue offers competitive fares – you can check for  flight deals here .

If you’re visiting Grenada for the beach, stay right on Grand Anse Beach. This is the best part of the beach and the most scenic place to stay – it’s also where all the hotels tend to concentrate! You can spend all day at the resort and beach, or head into town. Book accommodation in advance  to save.

I absolutely LOVE Grenada but have only been there by cruise ship. I have been thinking about going back for about a year now so this article is timely and gave me good advice about where to stay. I loved the spice tour but unfortunately after a stop to the rum factory with 110-180 proof rums, I don’t remember much about the rest of the stop. ;)

Top 55 things to do in grenada for an unforgettable holiday.

The island of Grenada is often overlooked when compared to bigger and presumably-better, Caribbean islands. In this case, this small isle makes quite a compelling case for itself, with its charming hilly terrain.

Known as the Spice Isle, Grenada is one of the biggest producers of spices, providing the world with lots of cinnamon, turmeric, cloves and ginger! Visitors to these shores are often compelled to find out more about its colourful history, and to experience its wonderful beaches and other natural attractions.

If you’re planning to go, make sure you keep at least one Friday night free as part of your trip to take in Fish Friday, Grenadian style, and also, be sure to pencil in some time to explore the many historical monuments that can be found here.

There are lots of things to do in Grenada, and for the purposes of enhancing your holiday there, here are the top 55!

55. Take a trip to Hog Island

This secluded stretch of island is the ideal place to simply relax and unwind. You can get some much needed RNR on any day that you decide to go, but be sure to bring along some food, drink and some recreational material to keep you occupied. Sundays at Hog Island tend to pull a crowd that come out for the music, dancing, drinks and a good ol’ BBQ at Roger’s Barefoot Beach Bar. Hog Island can be accessed by car from Mt. Hartman. Once you get there, you’ll need to take a brief walk across the bridge for access. Visitors can also get there by boat from neighbouring Woburn.

54. Walk along The Carenage

Location: St. George’s

Take a cool walk along The Carenage, which is a lively waterfront promenade in St. George, the capital of Grenada. Here you’ll find great views of everything from boats and wandering cats, to bustling workers preparing the boats to leave for other islands, or welcoming them as they come in. Explore the shopping centres, or revel in the sight of the radiant city and its infrastructure.

53. Climb up to Fort Matthew

This 18th century 1500-yard fort is the largest of its kind on the island and its name derives from the then governor, Edward Matthew. A visit to Fort Matthew is both intriguing and exciting, particularly for those who can appreciate the intricacy of 18th century style amenities like the army kitchens, bathrooms and the tables made out of rum barrels. The amazing view of St. George and the Melville Street Cruise Port make a trip to this part of the island more than worth it.

52. Try some new water sports

Location: Dragon Bay

This popular beach can be found near Molinere, along the west coast of Grenada . It is busy enough that you can enjoy some people watching, but not so busy that you’ll end up in a squabble over a prime beachside spot. There are bathrooms and a concession stand for your convenience but perhaps the best perk of all, is the wonderful opportunity to snorkel and dive among the seahorses and other marine life.

51. Experience Fish Friday

Location: Gouyave

The town of Gouyve (pronounced as gwav) has made a name for itself when it comes to finding the best fish every Friday. Locals and visitors come out in large numbers to enjoy some of the delectable fish meals, which include lobster, fish, lambi and other scrumptious seafood. The festivities begin at 6 pm and continue well into the morning with steel pan entertainment and Caribbean rhythms.

50. Visit nearby islands like Carriacou & Petit Martinique

Petit Martinique and Carriacou, part of the Grenadines, are two of the closest islands to Grenada. Carriacou, also known as “The Land of the Reefs” is a snorkeller’s dream while Petit Martinique is a fishing islet that has maintained its authenticity over the years. Tip: A water taxi from Hillsborough to Petit Martinique is also available, and costs around $60 USD per person.

49. Listen to steel pan music

Location: island wide

The smooth melody of Grenadian steel pan music is well loved across the island. The pan members play just about every genre of music and you’ll find yourself moving and grooving and in good spirits in no time. The sounds of the steel drums can be heard during Carnival, on the Carenage and at Spice Basket, a venue with authentic local entertainment. Suzuki Pan Wizards are one of the most popular steel bands on the island and has been in existence since 1988.

48. Unwind at a Friday night bonfire & BBQ

Apart from the Fish Fry in Gouyave, Grenada has lots of amazing Friday night activities. One of the most popular is the Friday Night Bonfire & BBQ in St. George. The Bonfire and BBQ held at the Savvy Beach Cabana offers a relaxing experience featuring soft pan music, a sparkling bonfire, delicious food and a calm beach atmosphere. The meals include grilled fish or meat with potatoes, pumpkin, salad and more.

47. Tee-off at Grenada’s golf course & country club

This 1936 golf course has 9 holes (2673 yards), hilly terrain and just enough wind to test your skills in the game. No worries though, because a pro golfer, Ronny Felix is on standby to help new golfers and even advanced players if they encounter difficulty. Regardless, the stunning view of the island from this vantage is sure to put you in a great mood.

46. Learn about the Carib’s Leap

Location: Sauteurs

In 1651, in the town of Sauteurs, the last of the Carib Indians on the island of Grenada fiercely resisted colonization by the French. They resorted to committing a collective act of sacrifice: mass suicide. Together, they all jumped off the cliff and into the ocean, several feet below. The area where they jumped to their deaths is now known as Carib’s Leap.

45. Stop by Grenada’s fish market

If you’re looking for things to do in Grenada then you definitely should stop by Grenada’s Fish Market, a busy and exciting place where you’re bound to meet some interesting people and get the freshest catch. The market is often buzzing with visitors who have dropped by for some fresh local fish. Catches of the day include red snapper or barracuda, which are sold at affordable prices. Souvenirs are also sold at this location.

44. Visit St George’s Anglican Church

This historical church was not left untouched by bad weather. It suffered some significant structural damages and since then, repairs have been underway to restore its ceiling and gallery. Nevertheless, you can still drop by to see this 1825 structure and learn the rich history of the majestic building.

43. Go barbeque hopping

Grilled Jamaican jerk chicken

As soon as the weekend hits, pork, chicken and fish can often be seen sizzling away on BBQ grills across Grenada. Preparation of this grilled food is an island wide practice and places like Jam-Down Jerk Chicken in Grand Anse Valley or Rosanne’s BBQ in St. David are among the most popular BBQ spots. At these locales, you can grab a few drinks to go along with your meal, before moving onto the next hotspot of your night.

42. Give bowling a try at Lavo Lanes

Sure you’ve been bowling before, but have you been bowling in Grenada? The ambiance is different here, and so is the competition. Lavo Lanes is relatively new, and at this location you’ll find a bar and a rooftop area for those looking to chill, and not just bowl. More serious bowlers can use any of the 8 lanes to try for a perfect score.

41. Join the Grenada Hash House Harriers

Approximately 150 to 300 men and women meet up every Saturday for a cross country fun walk in Grenada. This social group is open to everyone, regardless of age and agility and they actually call themselves “drinkers with a running problem”. Once the island wide trail has been set up, the 2 hours or so walk begins as participants follow bits of clues along the way until they finish off at a rum shop or bar.

40. Visit in time for the Grenada Music Festival

Though this festival was launched only a few years ago, in 2016, it may well be an excellent addition to your holiday “to do” list in the future. The first year of the festival saw performances by the ever-so-soulful Estelle, Joss Stone and the Roots Reggae musical band Steel Pulse. Local performers and vendors joined in on the festivities but in 2019, it was postponed due to insufficient funding. All we can say at this point is that you should keep your eyes open so you’ll be the first to know when this amazing festival makes its much anticipated comeback!

39. Chill at the Prickly Bay Marina

On the southwestern part of Grenada, lies Lance Aux Epines in the parish of St. George, where the Prickly Bay Marina can be found. It has become a hangout for sailors and other maritime folk, who come together to chill, eat and drink at the restaurants and bars and to take advantage of their deals. Whatever you do, don’t miss happy hour (5 pm to 6 pm)!

38. Visit Black Bay Beach

Location: St. John

The sand on Black Bay Beach is in fact black. This exotic, volcanic beach in St. John is considered one of the most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean, for its unique look. Here you’ll also find a cave that you can explore if you dare. The cave has markings from the Amerindians, the earliest settlers on the island. It only takes a short 20-minute trek from Concord to make your way to this private beach, so don’t miss out.

37. Plan a Saturday morning market run

Take a trip down to the fruit and vegetable market early on a Saturday morning to get first dibs on the freshest produce of the day. Vegetables, provisions and spices are often on sale and early birds are usually the ones with the biggest advantage as far as Saturday morning market runs go. The fruit and vegetable market can be found in close proximity to the local Fish Market.

36. Eat at the Creole Shack restaurant

This restaurant is appreciated by locals and visitors for its authentic, Caribbean style of cooking, as well as the relaxed atmosphere. You’ll find a variety of meals buffet style, including an array of meats along with macaroni pie, ground provisions and drinks. The meals are affordable, and the service is good. The Creole Shack is located within walking distance of the Fish Market.

35. Dine at Dodgy Dock

Dodgy Dock is a restaurant and lounge bar in St. George. Unlike some other restaurants, it is open every single day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even Sunday brunch. The menu consists of local dishes and international cuisine that is prepared with a Grenadian twist. Their menu is adaptable too, and vegans, vegetarians and gluten free folk can also find dishes to enjoy.

34. Explore Dougaldston Spice Estate

Learning the history of this estate will help you understand why Grenada has been dubbed the “Spice Isle.” Remnants of this plantation, such as the boiler, drill and the cocoa processing building are what’s left of a once thriving nutmeg oil distillation plant. Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves were grown here, but fortunately for everyone, these items are still available at the Grenada market, albeit manufactured via different sources.

33. Visit the Grenada National Museum

The Grenada National Museum is a busy one; in addition to the exhibits, it also hosts weekly cultural performances and outdoor lunches. The museum is sectioned off into various parts that reflect the content inside. These include Slavery, Plantation Economy and the Whaling & Fishing Archaeology. Interestingly enough, this museum was once housed a prison, barracks, hotels and even a warehouse – its history is very rich!

32. Discover Fort George

Fort George is a 1705 fort that was first called Fort Royal when the French ruled the island. Later on, when Britain took over, it was named after King George III and this name is still used today. This fort is strategically built; it offers an aerial view of the capital of St George and the harbour below. Though it is the oldest fort on island, many of its old buildings are still standing and can be accessed via a tour.

31. Spend the day at Grand Etang National Park

Location: northeast of Constantine

At an ascent of 1900 feet, this national park contains approximately 1,000 hectares of sweeping, lush vegetation, mountainous terrain and various ecological subsystems. It is home to a wide range of flora and fauna including the Lesser Antillean tanager, Mona monkey, broad winged hawk and mongoose. The Grand Etang National Park is part of the Grand Etang Forest Reserve and visitors can embark on a guided tour for about $1 or $2 USD.

30. Bask in the ambiance of Annandale Falls

Location: Willis

You may be awestruck by nature’s preciseness and beauty when you first get to the Annandale Falls. It is located in Willis, just a few minutes’ drive from St. John and a two-minute walk from the Interpretation Center. Below the 30 feet drop are the cool, clear waters of the falls that is enclosed with the rich vegetation that surrounds Annandale. 29. Go deep sea fishing

Fishing in Grenada is sure to be a rewarding experience; undoubtedly you will catch some of the many fish that populate the island’s surrounding waters, such as sailfish, tuna and mahi mahi. Blue marlin lovers will be happy to know that it is plentiful from October-May and you can begin to fish just 20 minutes after sailing.

28. Visit Fort Frederick

Location: east of St. George’s

Soaring over the town of St. George, is Fort Frederick, which is located east of the capital. This fort offers an excellent view of Grenada and its surrounding areas. It was built in 1779 by the French. Since the British and the French frequently fought over Grenada, Fort Frederick was at one point used to defend the British from the French thought it was built by the French!

27. Splash around in Concord Falls

Location: Concord

The Concord Falls comprises of three different waterfalls at various altitudes, which determines how long it takes to get to them. The first and the lowest one is about 100 feet in, and the other two call for a bit more walking and hiking (45 minutes or more) from the very first fall. They are all located in a private area, and so, a small fee will be charged in order to gain access to the falls. These falls are perfect for those who enjoy a good hike; so, bring your friends or family and make it a fun day! Want to visit? Tip: Be sure to take the appropriate hiking shoes, and wear comfortable clothing.

26. Trek up Mount St. Catherine

Location: St. Mark

This stratovolcano stands at 2,760 feet (840m) and is recognized as the highest point in Grenada and in the southern Caribbean Sea. Visitors can hike up to the top of the mountain, but it is recommended that you do so via a guided tour. Bear in mind that the path is often muddy and be sure to travel with water to keep hydrated. Tours can be arranged in St. George’s or Victoria.

25. Dine at Whisper Cove Marina

Location: St. David

Take a stroll through Whisper Cove Marina in St. David, to have a look at the businesses that make up this harbour. The marina is situated in Woburn in Clarke’s Court Bay and includes a Meat & Meet market and a steakhouse. This is the ideal place to dine for those looking for a juicy steak and other succulent meats. Make your reservations early for dinner and the buffet, as dinner ends at 8:30 p.m. and the buffet (Sundays) end at 2:30 pm.

24. Go with friends to Umbrella’s Beach Bar

Location: Grand Anse Beach, St. George.

If you’re looking for a good time and fast food, look no further. The diverse menu at Umbrella’s Beach Bar includes cheeseburger sliders, shrimp, steak, loaded fries and the famous Umbrella Burger. Live music is sure to keep you entertained, particularly on weekends from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm (Fridays and Saturdays).

23. Visit Laura’s Spice Garden

This Spice Garden upholds the island’s reputation as The Island of Spice. Laura’s Spice Garden has a selection of plants, herbs and spices that are grown in Grenada. A guided tour will give you all the educational information that you need including the many uses of these plants as well as their names. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop on your way out to grab some souvenirs.

22. Take a tour of the island by car

To really get a feel of the island it’s a good idea to rent a car to drive yourself around. In that way you get to meet the locals, explore the beaches in St George’s such as Grand Anse and Magazine Beach, the latter which is perfect for snorkelling. Be sure to carry some (not too much!) cash for food and take the necessary precautions to keep yourself safe.

21. Seven Sisters Falls

Located within the Grand Etang National Park, the Seven Sisters Falls is considered one of Grenada’s most beautiful attractions. You’ll have to pay about EC$5 to access the Falls, unless you go with a tour, then the price may be included with your package. Most people enjoy the hike to and from the Falls, and a chance to dip in the cool water natural pools. You can go on hikes higher up the falls, but you’ll need to ensure you have sturdy shoes and an experienced guide. Having a guide is highly recommended, especially if you want to ‘jump the falls’, which can be dangerous. Guides will show you where is safe to jump, but keep in mind that the walk to the top of the falls is steep. If you don’t feel like pushing the limits, enjoy the views from the bottom, and a refreshing splash in one of the natural pools in the area.

20. Take a bath in the Royal Mt. Carmel waterfalls

Location: St. Andrew

This waterfall is recognized as the highest in Grenada, as it falls more than 70 feet below into the clear waters. Luckily, it won’t take much to gain access to the magnificent view, because you only need to trek about 30 minutes to get there. There are tour guides available if you need one and an entrance fee must be paid to the owners of the private land that you must traverse to get to the waterfall.

19. Sunnyside Garden

Sunnyside Garden in St. Georges is an award-winning tropical garden which has had several television features, including on the “Gardens of the Caribbean” series in the UK. Described as “extraordinarily beautiful” by some who’ve been, there are various garden rooms here with different levels visitors can explore. In between the greenery are ponds with koi fish and water lilies, and a guide will take you through the various plant and wildlife species that can be found in the area. This botanical garden is a must visit for those desirous of a breath of fresh air and want to see nature at its very best.

18. Have a craft beer at the West Indies Beer Company

Location: Lance aux Epines

Opening its doors in 2014, the West Indies beer Company continues to offer a wide variety of beers and ciders. They also cater to non-alcoholic drinkers and offer wine, spirits and soft drinks to suit their taste. All the beers are brewed on location and the company has expanded their services to include food as well, so you’ll be able to find items like burgers, pizza, ice cream and fish and chips.

17. Sample rum at the River Antoine Rum Distillery

Location: St. Patrick

Since 1785, this distillery has been processing and producing rum for the islands of the Caribbean and beyond. The process more or less remains the same and River Antoine stands as the oldest of its kind in the Caribbean. Tours are available Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, and you get a sample of the liquor before you leave!

16. Visit the Belmont Estate

This private country estate is a fully functional 17th century style plantation that serves as a major tourist attraction in Grenada. Tours are available throughout the week; until the doors close at 4 pm As part of the tour, you’ll get to see the gardens, farms, museum and the facilities where the cocoa is produced. The restaurant on site also offers a scrumptious lunch menu, and you can stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs, or the café to relax.

15. Join a yoga session on the beach

Yoga sessions are relaxing, soothing, and are a sure way to bring peace to your body and mind. Yoga in the Caribbean however is next level. The peace of mind that you find is amplified in this part of the word, for the breezy ease with which you’ll find yourself moving through the way. If you’re experienced, you will be right at home at any yoga class, and if you’re not, no worries, it is very easy to learn! Some hotels on island offer yoga classes at reasonable cost, or you can try asking around at a local gym. Sandals Grenada include yoga in the all-inclusive package .

14. House of Chocolate

Learn all you’ll possibly need to know about chocolate during your holiday to Grenada with a visit to the House of Chocolate. Here you can go on a tour, shop for gifts, and learn about the intricacies of the chocolate making process. The House of Chocolate is essentially a mini museum as described by its creators, which features a café on site that offers tasty local chocolate treats. There’s also a boutique at this location where you can have your pick of an array of items made with cocoa to take back home with you. House of Chocolate is in St. George’s Grenada.

13. Reflect and sunbathe at La Sagesse Beach

Before your holiday comes to an end, you simply must visit La Sagesse Beach. Not only is it beautiful but it is quite peaceful too, because it is not frequented as often as the other beaches on the island. Unlike some of the other beaches in Grenada, there is only one hotel located near this beach, which comes in handy in case you want to grab something to eat. Otherwise, carry your own food and drinks.

12. Have some fun in the sun at Magazine Beach

Magazine Beach is found on the south west coast of Grenada. It is easily accessible, and all you’ll need to do to find yourself basking in the warm rays on these shores is continue along the main road after the Point Salines International Airport. It is located behind the airport, near the Aquarium Restaurant. There are hotels situated near the beach, which means things can get pretty busy here, but that should take away from the enjoyable experience you’re sure to have here.

11. Tower Estate

Estates and Plantation Houses are worth visiting when on this Caribbean isle, as you can learn more about the island’s history, and Tower Estate is a good place to start. Tower Estate is in the community of St. Paul, and here you’ll be able to go on farm tours or garden tours, with opportunities to stay for brunch, or afternoon tea. Before you leave, try their organic floral teas made from plants grown on the estate. A tour of this location is complete with a walk through the Great House, which is filled with rich history. Tower Estate is about 15 minutes away from St. George’s.

10. Join a costumed band for Spice Mas

The yearly carnival parade, known as “Spice Mas” is held on the second Monday and Tuesday in August. By then, the carnival season would have been open for several weeks prior, with various events such as dance competitions, Panorama and a Soca show. Jab Jab Jouvert is also a highlight of carnival, where people wake up super early (or don’t sleep at all) for an opportunity to party in the streets with a mixture of mud, paint, and Soca music!

9. Test the waters at Morne Rouge Beach

Some people prefer the waters of the Morne Rouge Beach as compared to Grand Anse and other beaches in Grenada. This is because the sea is quite calm here, and the beach itself offers a tranquillity that is in contrast to popular beaches which are always buzzing with activity. Morne Rouge can be accessed by car, or by taking a quick walk from Grand Anse Beach, which is situated just next to it.

8. Sign up for a bicycle tour

Location: St. George's

Cycling through Grenada has been made easy thanks to Island Routes , offering a great cycling tour across the island of Grenada. You will cycle across much of Grenada's terrain, ride along the coastline, pass by the local fishing bay and even visit L'anse aux Epines!

7. Meet some Leatherback turtles at Levera National Park

Levera Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Grenada, located across the north of the island. The beach itself is always postcard ready, complete with golden sand, translucent blue waters and palm trees lining the coast. Levera National Park is an amazing place to watch Leatherback turtles. During the months of March until August, you can witness the turtles arrive, lay eggs and return to the ocean.

6. Explore the Underwater Sculpture Park

Grenada should be given more credit for its amazing diving sites with incredible views of the island’s coral reefs and shipwrecks. One of the main underwater attractions is the world's first Underwater Sculpture Park, which features a collection of underwater contemporary art. The sculptures are situated in a variety of depths with a maximum of 40 feet. The park is popular amongst scuba divers, snorkelers and glass bottom boat tours.

5. Relax at the Grand Anse beach

Grand Anse Beach is also ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving, or just taking a swim. Sunbathing here is highly recommended, because of the laid back ambiance.

4. Sandy Island

A water taxi is all it takes to get to this slice of paradise, and if you have your own yacht or speed boat, all the better. White sandy beaches and palm trees line the island, which is also a nature reserve, and the water is so beautiful and clear that it attracts divers holidaying in Grenada and in the nearby islands of the Grenadines, like Carriacou. Sometimes you can get a local fisherman to take you across to the island from Grenada; the boat ride takes about 10 minutes. If you plan on spending the day there, bring along food and drinks.

3. Palm Tree Botanical Gardens

Palm Tree Botanical Gardens in Grenada is not particularly well advertised compared to some of the more well-known attractions, but when you go, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find. There is so much beauty in the small space of this location, that it is best described as a garden’s dream. The guide here will take you through this enchanting space in a leisurely manner, ensuring that you leave better informed than you came. For great views, a chance to be at one with nature, and a wealth of information, this tour is highly recommended.

2. Go on a kayaking adventure

Conservation kayak will take you on an exciting kayaking adventure that will make it possible for you to see the beauty of the island and its wildlife first hand. The trips are more than just paddling through the waters; most include lunch, drinks and quality time on the beach. You don’t need any previous experience in kayaking but you must be able to swim!

The ideal way to end any fulfilled day in Grenada is to climb onboard a catamaran and enjoy a tour along the gorgeous Grenadian waters, while the sun sets in the distance. Often referred to as ‘The Spice Island’, Grenada’s location is far enough south to avoid the hordes of tourists that the islands in the north receive, yet it’s still easily reached on many cruise ship itineraries or the very affordable and direct flights from North America found on Skyscanner .

Here are the best things to do in Grenada

1. Relax and swim on Grand Anse Beach

This is the largest beach in Grenada, and many say this is the best one. Enjoy soft white sand with calm and turquoise water. You can go swimming, kayaking, diving, snorkelling, or just relax with a book.

There are small trees lining the back of this beach which is great if you need some shade from the sun.

Find some small beach shacks along Grand Anse beach selling cold beers and sometimes beach BBQ food. Spending some time here is one of the things you shouldn’t miss when visiting Grenada.

Our favourite place was ‘Cummin Up’. Beers are 5 EC each (less than $2) and they play some great music while you chill on the beach. A great spot to watch the sunset.

2. Join a Food Tour

Foodies, listen up! This food experience is a must! We had such a great morning exploring the hidden food spots that you’d likely miss on your own.

Your passionate food guide will tell you more about this colourful city and the history of this island nation too. It’s on the top of the list you shouldn’t miss in Grenada!

This 5-hour Guided Food and City Tour around St George’s includes many tastings from all the best parts of this delicious cuisine. Aside from the tasty food, we enjoyed learning about the food as we met friendly locals who were proud to showcase their Caribbean flavours to us.

Our favourite part was indulging in a typical Grenadian breakfast and a visit to the chocolate museum and tasting some of the finished products! This is definitely one of the best things to do in Grenada.

The best part of this Grenada Culinary Experience is that it gives you the knowledge of the best local spots to return to later on. If you’re short on time or just have a day in Grenada as part of your Caribbean cruise itinerary, this is the perfect tour.

The tour begins at the entrance of the cruise port and you’ll still have half a day to go and relax on the gorgeous beaches here before you return to the ship.

3. Royal Mt. Carmel Waterfalls (St. Andrew)

Visit the tallest waterfalls in Grenada which are located only 3km from Grenville, one of the best things to do in Grenada. Also known as Marquis Falls, there are two falls cascading over 70 feet into the pools below.

It’s an easy 20 – 30 min walk to reach the waterfalls through a private plantation and the owners charge a small fee to visit. Make a day of it and pack a picnic to enjoy when you’re there. Don’t forget your swimsuit!

4. Drive around the Island

Hire a car for around $44 /day and explore the island. You might get lost a few times as road signs are almost absent here, but just ask anyone for directions along the way. Grenadians are a friendly bunch.

5. Explore the colourful city of St George

Once you take a walk along the seaside carenage of St.George, you’ll soon see why it is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean. And the setting alone makes St George one of the things you shouldn’t miss in Grenada,

Historical buildings and colourful houses sit around a glass shaped, calm bay. Fort George sits above the town centre, originally built for strategic fortification to guard the harbour entrance.

This is a great spot for a fantastic view and to capture the best pictures of St George. Afterwards, explore the small cobblestoned streets below and chat with the market vendors selling tropical fruits and fresh spices.

6. Fish Friday – Things you shouldn’t miss in Grenada!

We didn’t get to try this but we heard that it’s always lots of fun. Every Friday in the town of Gouyave, a small village on Grenada’s west coast, Fish Friday happens.

The town is well known for its seafood and is known as the fishing hub of Grenada. So if you are here on Friday, put this on the list – the fish Friday is one of the things you shouldn’t miss in Grenada, according to locals.

Catch one of the minivans for a couple of dollars to reach Gouyave. There’s a street festival here where you can wander the food stalls and listen to live Caribbean reggae music.

This weekly event is a Grenadian tradition so it’s a great way to experience the local culture and relax with great seafood including lobster, shrimp, fish cakes, marlin and a few drinks.

Freshly caught seafood like lobster, conch and shrimp, jerked marlin, fish cakes and a few refreshing beers. Absolutely one of the best things to do in Grenada.

I’m going on a Seabourn cruise in April. One stop is Grenada. Read about the food tour which the ship doesn’t offer. I’m traveling by myself. Is it safe to go and how do I arrange it. Thank you. Diane

They do cater to visitors to Grenada who are visiting for the day on a cruise, and the tour departs at the entrance of the cruise port. But, I’m unsure how long the Seabourn cruise stays in port for the day. Perhaps you could book the trip if it looks like something you wish to do (it’s free cancellation) and ask them for further details about times etc to ensure you have enough time to take the tour.

From chocolate making to water-sports, here's how to spend your time on the Island of Spice

To a first-time visitor, Grenada is a country that feels honest, unpretentious and largely untouched by the claws of consumerism – a Bali before Instagram. A nature lover’s paradise, there are 60 dive sites, 50 white sand beaches and 15 waterfalls scattered across this tiny, fertile Caribbean nation.

Grenada’s three islands also pride themselves on culinary excellence. It’s a place where even the wildest dishes, from sorrel sorbet, chocolate tomato soup or Tania Log (which Grenadians refer to as ‘nature’s viagra’), find their way to your belly. And the food and drink w orld has taken notice. In 2021, the World Food Travel Association crowned Grenada the world’s first ‘culinary capital’ , putting the national dish, colloquially known as ‘oil down’ -  a chicken, pigtails vegetable and dumpling stew - on travellers’ radar.

Here’s how intrepid travellers and foodies should enjoy their time on Spice Island… before the influencers arrive.

Amazing things to do in Grenada

1.  eat and shop at market square, st george’s.

Most of the islands’ dishes have made their way through Market Square, famed for its independent, small-batch cooking. Head there on Friday and Saturday to find fresh fruit, including guavas, soursop and breadfruit being sold alongside herbs and spices such as nutmeg and mace. You’ll also likely come across West Indian hot sauce and various forms of the native water vegetable: seamoss. 

Seamoss is generally regarded by Grenadians to be a superfood due to its high fibre and iodine content. It’s been linked to good gut health (true) muscle growth (true), workout recovery (true) and is often touted by locals as being as protein-rich as chicken (very very false).

Handcrafted goods are also up for grabs. Ox-eye beans are used to make bracelets and calabash is the canvas of choice for bespoke artworks of local beaches and waterfalls. But word of warning, beware the chorus of vendors flogging ‘fresh saffron.’ They’re peddling turmeric root, not the spenny spice.

2.  Have a go at chocolate-making at Belmont Estate

A former seventeenth century French-owned slave plantation, Belmont Estate, found at the northern tip of the main island in St Patrick, is now a fully-functioning farm as well as an educational site. Set across 400 acres, the estate is home to a museum, sugarcane and orchid garden, restaurant and an IRL chocolate factory(!).

Today, Belmont is headed by a Black female attorney, Shadel Nyack Compton, who has transformed it into a thriving 21st century business that champions organic agriculture and eco-tourism. On site you’ll get the chance to take part in the cocoa processing production line by shuffling cocoa beans between your toes and sampling the final product. Keep your eyes peeled for roaming monkeys and tortoises and an irreverent parrot. And if you fancy learning more about the plantation's history, t ake a detour to find the recently discovered grave of the plantations' former owner.

3.  Enjoy a high-end meal at Armadillo

Grenada offers a welcome respite from junk food (though you will find a solitary KFC and Subway on the main island). For a high-end meal served in a relaxed seaside setting, head to Armadillo, an intimate guesthouse run by a husband and wife duo. The kitchen is open to non-residents, which can only be described as a real treat as dishes that look savoury usually taste sweet and dishes that look sweet usually taste savoury. Make sure your reservation is made at least a day before and head to the cashpoint first as they don’t accept credit cards.

4.  Stay at family-run True Blue Bay Boutique Resort

On Grenada’s South coast, True Blue Bay Boutique Resort is a climate-smart complex, complete with restaurant, rum bar, chocolate bakery and spa, run by the Fielden family. Rooms are as relaxed as they are turquoise, with flower petals generously scattered across all non-flammable surfaces - including the loo. But it’s the clan in charge that make True Blue special. 

The Fieldens live on site, so you’ll likely see Mexican-born matriarch Magdalena promoting the island’s organic chocolate or granddaughter Lilian hosting princess-themed treasure hunts on the beachfront. If you’re really lucky, Englishman Russ, who sailed to the Caribbean in 1981 never to return home again, might even regale you with colourful tales of his involvement in the 1979 Marxist Revolution. There’s also a spa on site where you can book in fo r a Calming Cocoa Soak. Think ‘Pretty Woman’ meets chocolate mud bath.

5.  Get your heart racing on a river-tubing adventure

Being lodged into a rubber ring with a wooden bottom and dragged backwards down a series of rapids by a contingent of cannon-balling tubemen might not sound like the first choice for an adrenaline hit, but let me tell you, it should be. For someone whose usual level of risk taking extends to thieving the odd 5p bag from Tesco (sorry Mum), the contrast of gliding down the river with mini bursts of white water rafting was a rush worth almost peeing my pants for. Just remember to leave your phone bankside unless you want to get deep into the semantics of ‘waterproof’ v ‘resistant’.

6.  Take a dip at Annandale Falls

For those looking for a more relaxing dip in the river, Annandale’s dreamy plunge pool should do the trick. The 30-foot waterfall does a pretty good job of besting the local leisure centre as the backdrop for a swim and/or perfecting the Instafamous mermaid hair flick. If you’re watershy, allergic to hikes of the Bear Grylls cannon or easily parched, fear not, it’s also only a two-minute walk from civilization and less than one from an open bottle of rum at the on-site wooden barrel bar. That is if you discount the man who offered us overproof mother’s ruin on the riverbank…

7.  Try home-cooked food at Dexters

Taking home-cooked food literally, Dexters is a restaurant run by its namesake from his family home in St George’s. Mostly known for its five course dining menu, the meat offering can safely be called extensive, with steak, lobster, duck, pork and shrimp all being plated up alongside traditional Caribbean dishes like plantain cake and chocolate banana pudding. The slap up veggie menu also gives pumpkin soup a Grenadian glow-up thanks to the added zing of local spices. And let me tell you, the man works wonders with a christophine. The one hazard? The experience might remind you so much of home, you might find yourself scrubbing in to help with the dishes.

I created this guide after a frustrating experience planning my first trip to Grenada. The information I found was either outdated or non-existent. This guide is geared toward first-time visitors to Grenada and intended to provide basic and essential information to easily plan and experience your first visit to the island. I say “first visit” because I’m confident once you arrive, you’ll start planning your next visit.

When to go to Grenada

Grenada is one of the southernmost Caribbean islands, allowing for amazing year-round temperatures. On average, you can expect 83 Fahrenheit every month. Because of Grenada’s proximity, it rarely is hit by hurricanes. Even more, the reason to visit any time of year.

Note: Grenada is hit by hurricanes far less than other Caribbean islands, but it has still been hit. 

With that said, the island does experience a rainy season. Grenada’s rainy season starts in June and lasts until December and is characterized by frequent thunderstorms and downpours, which are short-lasting but very intense and typically followed by plenty of sunshine.

Of course, weather is not an exact science. Lately, it seems like no matter where you are in the world; you’re experiencing “unseasonal weather”. I point this out because although no time of year is guaranteed warm and sunny days in Grenada, your chances are more likely outside the rainy season.

Whether your travel goals are to get out and experience activities on the island, attend a particular event (like Spice Mas in August!) or save money on your trip, the chart below should help you determine when to visit.

How much does it cost to travel to Grenada

How much you will spend to travel to Grenada is somewhat subjective. It’s totally dependent on your travel style. To provide some idea of the cost of travel to Grenada, I’ve established three different travel styles – average, luxury, and budget- and the cost of each style’s main expenses – airfare, hotel, food, and transportation. I’m an average traveler, so the costs associated with the average traveler below are actual costs from my recent trip to the island.

Cost for Dining Out

You’re on vacation, so of course, you’ll want to dine out occasionally. Even luxury travelers staying at an all-inclusive may want to duck out for some local fare at some point. 

Obviously, you’ll pay more for food when dining out versus buying and cooking your own meals. Below is pricing for dining out at various restaurant types in Grenada. You’ll notice the cost is relatively close to US restaurants, which seems high, considering the overall pricing and standard of living on the island.

Cell Service

To avoid exploding your cell bill when traveling to Grenada? You can: 

• Purchase a SIM card from a local carrier like Digicel or Flow;
• Purchase an international day pass or cell plan from your cell provider (if offered);
• Turn your phone on airplane mode and only use wifi when it’s available.

Everything you need to know about paying for things in Grenada is below.

• The EC$ (Eastern Caribbean dollar) is the standard form of currency, but the US$ (US dollar) is widely accepted.
• Bring crisp US dollars, not ripped or wrinkled ones, as they’re likely to be rejected.
• Major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, stores, and tour operators. One exception – American Express is often not accepted. 
• Have cash available for taxis, market vendors, water taxis, ferries, and independent guides. Unless you pay the exact amount you will likely receive a change in EC$.
• Unless you want to come home with a wallet full of EC$, bring lots of $1 and $5 bills with you to pay for cash items.
• There are several banks on the island with ATMs available for cash withdrawal, but be aware they are closed on weekends and holidays.

How to get to Grenada

Entry Requirements 

• A valid passport book and evidence of return/onward travel arrangements are required to enter Grenada. 
• A valid passport means it doesn’t expire at least 6 months after your return date.  
• You can stay for a max of 90 days without a VISA.

Flight Information

When planning my first trip to Grenada, I was surprised at how difficult it was to find flight information. It was a challenge to learn which US airlines flew to Grenada, what days of the week they flew there, and which times of the year.  Sure, you could use Skyscanner, but without knowledge of the days the airlines fly to Grenada, you’re often left with a flight adventure”. What’s a “flight adventure”?

Flight adventures are a combination of several stops &/or layovers and take more than a day to get to your destination. They are a long, tiresome, and inefficient way to get to your destination. -Ralf Stefan, Caribbean Authority

Since airfare information was not readily available, I spent a ton of time digging online and calling airlines. I fly from the US, but I know many of you are coming from Canada, the UK, and other countries, so I gathered flight information from those countries as well so you don’t have to go through the same rigamarole I did.

Fly to Grenada From the US

Three airlines fly direct from the US to Grenada:

• JetBlue flies directly to Grenada from New York. Flight time is 4 hours 50 minutes.
• American Airlines flies direct to Grenada from Miami & Charlotte. Flight time is 3 hours 31 minutes from Miami and 4 hours 15 minutes from Charlotte.
• Delta Airlines flies direct to Grenada from Atlanta. Flight time is 4 hours 34 minutes.

Fly to Grenada From Canada

Two airlines fly direct from Canada to Grenada:

• Air Canada flies directly to Grenada from Toronto
• Sunwing Airlines flies directly to Grenada from Toronto
• Flight length is 5 hours and 15 minutes.

Fly to Grenada From the UK

Unfortunately, there aren’t any airlines that fly direct to Grenada from the UK. However, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both have near-direct options since they both fly from London to Grenada with only one short stopover in St. Lucia.

• British Airways flies from Gatwick Airport to St. Lucia, then on to Grenada. The flight to St. Lucia is 8 hours 45 minutes. 
• Virgin Atlantic flies from Manchester Airport in St. Lucia, then on to Grenada. The flight to St. Lucia is 9 hours 5 minutes.
• The flight from St. Lucia is provided by Liat (airlines) and is a 55-minute flight.

Packing Tips

I don’t mind packing for vacation, but many people hate it! I think this loathing comes from the travel experts’ advice to “pack light,” which creates anxiety, resulting in overwhelm and, ultimately, procrastination to begin the task of packing. I love packing a big-ass suitcase and think everyone should do it.

How long Should You stay in Grenada?

If you’re traveling from the US, Canada, or the UK, you’ll need at least 2 days for travel. From there, determine how many days you need to rest & relax, explore, and generally just chill out. 

Of course, how long to stay on vacation is a personal decision dependent on many factors, such as your available vacation time from work, home & work commitments, and, of course, flight schedules. 

The max you can stay in Grenada without a visa is 30 days.

Where to Stay in Grenada

Grenada offers an array of accommodations, including hotels, resorts, Airbnb, apartments, and even just a room. This guide is geared toward a typical traveler  (vs. backpacker), so I’ll assume you’re interested in a hotel or resort-type accommodation.

How to get around in Grenada

Grenada’s bus system consists of minibusses that transport people all over the island. It’s an amazing way to get around while getting to know the locals and learning about the country. And, you know your life is in the hands of an expert – they drive those roller-coaster roads every day so have developed the skill.

Things you should know about riding the bus in Grenada

• Hours: Weekdays 7AM – 7PM (Not all buses run on weekends)
• Fares are cheap! Depending on the destination expect to pay $1 – $6 EC each way. Be sure to ask the driver to confirm the cost beforehand. 
• There are 9 zones with one or more routes per zone. 
• Each bus displays the route number in the windshield.
• Each route is a loop ending at the same location it starts.
• Some buses can get quite crowded as its the main transportation for many residents. Don’t worry – hop on and room will be made for you.

Grenada Bus Routes

Taxis are widely available throughout the island and cost more than a bus but offer privacy and convenience especially on weekends when buses can be scarce.

Things you should know about taking a taxi in Grenada:

• Taxis are licensed by the government and should prominently display their official credentials. They don’t run meters, instead, because they are licensed by the government, there are set rates.
• Hotel and airport taxis are price-fixed by the government. To give you an example, the price for a taxi from the airport to the St. George’s area is $16. That’s total, not per person.
• Fares to and from the airport are set by the government. In March I paid about $16 US each way to my hotel.
• Be sure to confirm the fare with your driver, and whether it’s in US$ or EC $, before setting off on the journey. Often the rate can be negotiable. 
• Many travelers have been known to hire a taxi for a day to explore the island.

I don’t recommend renting a car unless you’re accustomed to driving on the left with the steering wheel on the right and willing to put up with certain challenges including Narrow, steep & windy roads, pedestrians walking across the street paying no attention to traffic, and drivers that don’t use turn signals and drive very fast. 

Things you should know about renting a car in Grenada

• It cost about $70 US per day to rent a car. 
• The government requires a visitor’s temporary driver’s license, which you can easily obtain by showing the rental company your regular driver’s license and paying for a Grenadian one. The cost is about $25 US.
• You can rent a car at AVIS in St. Georges. 

Is Grenada Safe?

Grenada is very safe but it’s always sensible to exercise caution regardless of where you’re traveling. Exercise these precautions while in Grenada (or any country your visiting for that matter):

• Leave your flashy jewelry, and clothes at home. 
• Stay in well lit and populated areas after dark. 
• Do not leave valuables such as money, credit cards, cameras and other electronic devices unattended – especially on the beaches or in vehicles.
• Most hotels provide a safe in the room. Lock your passport in it.

US travelers should always check the State Department’s Travel Advisory page to learn the current advisory level for the country they’re traveling to. Here’s a link to the state department’s information on Grenada .

The U.S. Embassy in Grenada is located in the capital city of St. George’s, however, the U.S. Ambassador operates out of the U.S. Embassy located about 170 miles away in Bridgetown, Barbados.

What about the Water?

According to NAWASA (National Water & Sewerage Authority), the organization that treats Grenada’s water, Grenada’s water is “safe for human consumption”. Many in the hospitality field in Grenada will recommend you drink bottled water because visitors’ bodies are not accustomed to Grenada water. It’s up to you. I decided to boil water and drink bottled (Montezuma’s Revenge anyone?).

Final Thoughts

Plan on falling in love with Grenada. I’m so confident you’ll love Grenada that I’m willing to bet your first trip will not be your last. With that, take your time and truly enjoy each experience while you’re there. Unlike other vacations you may have taken to popular Caribbean destinations like Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic, there’s no sense of urgency to grab a beach chair, rush to the tour bus, or stand in line for a beer. The vibe is more chill in Grenada.

You don’t need to go on a day tour, and a guide isn’t necessary, as it takes approximately 10 minutes to walk to the falls from the parking space. It’s a great place for bringing a picnic and soak up the natural vibes on your Grenada eco travel vacation.

Cost: Approximately 2.50 EC per person.

Eco Tip: Have a chat (or a beer) with the locals at their bar afterward. They are very friendly and have put a lot of effort into making the grounds accessible. 

2. Hike to Seven Sisters falls, Grand Etang national park

Visiting Seven Sisters waterfalls is one of the best things to do in Grenada! It’s not too often that you get your own double waterfall for the day. There are actually 6 tiers that you can hike to (we’ve only managed to get to two without a guide).

To get to this first double waterfall its a steep downhill stair climb, which takes approximately 30 minutes. You do not need a guide to get to the first waterfall, as the track is clearly marked.

There’s rarely people there (except for when the cruise ship is in town) and it’s a perfect place to swim. It is also accessible by public bus.

Eco Tip: Make sure you bring your trash with you as you are immersed in nature! 

3. Adventure to the second waterfall at Concord falls, St John Parish

The first waterfall is right by the carpark, but if you want to check out one of the more unique things to do in Grenada, hike to the second waterfall. This second waterfall has the most incredible setting, with no other people for miles and a series of river crossings to get there, it was a total immersion in green vibes.

You can opt for a guide or find your own way (like us), it is approximately 30-45 minutes each way. Please do not support the unethical animal tourism at the bars on the way (captive monkeys).

Eco Tip: Use natural insect repellents, such as essential oils (we love bay oil). 

4. Relax by Annadale falls, St George Parish

This waterfall is one of the more popular places of interest in Grenada. Only a short walk from the carpark via a well-groomed footpath (less than 5 minutes). There is now a restaurant and bar “Wild Orchid” overlooking the waterfall, so you can enjoy a drink while enjoying the fresh air.

If you are not inclined to swim, there is a space to walk behind the waterfall. A local man is often at these falls will jump from the top of the waterfall for some money. It’s not much, but that’s how he makes his living.

5. Experience Magic at Magazine beach, St George parish

There are some stunning beaches in Grenada , from the infamous Grand Anse beach to the off-the-beaten-path Sauteurs beach. Rivaling the beautiful beaches of Jamaica , Magazine beach is seriously stunning. There is a section of palm trees perfect for that Caribbean classic photo and a beautiful rocky outcrop in front of the Aquarium restaurant at the end of the beach. 

This beach is accessible by bus (it’s on the way to the airport), and it is a great place to watch the sunset (rivals the sunset at Fort Frederick). You can also snorkel around the rocky headland to see some small fish, however, there is very little coral. 

Eco Tip: Try and pick up three pieces of trash #take3forthesea.

6. Relax at the iconic Grand Anse beach, St George parish

This is the largest and most popular beach in Grenada, which is a must for your list of things to do in Grenada. It is also one of the most beautiful beaches to visit. Grand Anse has a long stretch of white, soft sand, and is a dreamy place to walk along. There are a few hotels along the way, however, all beaches in Grenada are public, so you can sit and walk anywhere along the beach.

This is accessible by public transport and if you get there early you won’t see many people.

Eco Tip: Support local businesses – There is a local man that walks up and down Grand Anse Beach offering to make hats or bowls out of palm fronds. He is incredibly talented, and this is a great zero waste purchase for your travel!

7. Have a Vibe at Mourne Rouge Beach (BBC Beach), St George Parish

The beach is generally much quieter than Grand Anse even though it is close by. With plenty of shady trees to sit under, it is the perfect spot to spend the day. There are a few small bars along the beach with great local hospitality. La Plywood is a popular colourful bar, offering fresh food, and ice cold, locally made vibe hard seltzers .

Eco Tip: Make sure you wear reef-safe sunscreen and bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated. 

8. Experience the off-the-beaten-path La Sagesse beach, st David’s parish

This beautiful cove has a lot of palm trees to sit under and a small river that connects to the sea. There is also a restaurant (connected to a hotel) by the beach where you can order a beer and some food.

Eco Tip: Bring a bag and do a beach clean up. We often do beach clean-ups here as a lot of plastic trash washed up on the beach after the 2018 floods.

9. Travel North to Sauters beach, Saint Patrick’s parish

When trying to find unique things to do in Grenada, this is the perfect place to swing from a coconut tree. Hardly any tourists make it up this far to the Northern end of the island so if you are looking for some things off the beaten path in Grenada, head up here!

There is a cool and colorful bar across from the beach made out of Bamboo called D Real Bamboo Bar. The owner, Laza, built this bar by himself, and a small gym on the beach for anybody to use.

Eco Tip: Support the local businesses and purchase a beer (make sure you return the glass bottle as they recycle these). 

10. Stay at Sugar loaf island, St patrick’s parish

This private island has one house on it (right at the northern tip of Grenada). You can rent it out on Airbnb for a totally unique experience. It is a rustic style home, with four bedrooms, a rainwater tank, and a generator for use at night.

The island is a short boat ride (5 minutes) from the main island at Levera beach, and there is an island caretaker available.

Eco Tip: Levera National Park / Levera beach is where the Leatherback turtles lay their eggs from March/April until June/July each year. If you spot one keep your flashlights off! 

11. Experience your own island at Sandy Island, St patrick’s parish

Not to be confused with Sandy Island on Carriacou, this beautiful island is right off the north coast. There are some beautiful palm trees, white sand, and clear water to snorkel in. There are also some old hotel ruins on the island, but no toilets.

You’ll want to watch the weather conditions when you go to make sure the swell isn’t too rough, as it is a bumpy boat ride over.

Eco tip: Be prepared and bring a reusable water bottle, snacks and reef safe sunscreen.

12. Party at Hog island, St George parish

This island can be reached by boat, or you can walk across the bridge. It has one small bar that has live music on Sundays. It attracts mostly those living on yachts, however, it does get a local crowd on a Sunday.

Eco tip: Bring reusable cups unless you plan to drink beer!

13. Hike to Welcome Stone, St Patrick’s parish

After you park your car, there is a steep climb to the top of the mountain along the road. From there, there is a small path that takes you to the lookout (approximately 15 minutes). The view at Welcome Rock over the islands to Grenada’s north is worth the strain on your legs. The best time to visit is towards sunset when the lighting is soft.

Eco Tip: Bring a bag, there is often quite a lot of trash left that could be picked up. 

14. Spot wild monkeys at Grand etang national park

You might get lucky and see some monkeys up here by the Grand Etang lake (you can ask the man in the security box whether he has seen them). You can hike all around this forest reserve, with many trails to explore.

Eco tip: Don’t touch or feed the monkeys – they might bite and it’s not good to encourage taking food from the hands of humans. 

15. Experience Diving & Snorkelling in Grenada

The first underwater sculpture park in the world is in Grenada. The sculpture park has a variety of human and mermaid forms, with some interactive spots too (a selfie bench).

There are a couple of scuba diving tour operators on Grande Anse beach to choose from, however, a good place to start is Dive Grenada.   Ask them when their next underwater clean up is.

Whether you are looking for shore dives or wreck dives, the island has lots of options to choose from, and you need to add at least one to your list of things to do in Grenada!

Eco tip: Don’t touch the coral, and be aware of your flippers. Pick up the underwater plastic trash if you see some! 

16. Go on a sunset sail in Grenada with Savvy Sailing

If you are looking for unique things to do in Grenada, go on a day sail with ​ Savvy Sailing . Equipped with snorkel masks and fins, beers, and rum punch, you can head to the underwater sculpture park for an afternoon adventure. You can even organize a sunset cruise if you’re looking for romantic things to do in Grenada.

If you’ve got time, organize a trip to Carriacou to visit some of the beautiful Carriacou beaches , and sail with Savvy to the Grenadines which is home to the beautiful Tobago Cays.

Eco tip: Make sure you wear some reef safe sunscreen, bring a reusable cup and water bottle. A waterproof backpack is also handy to avoid getting your belongings wet!

17. Taste Black Iron’s vegan burgers, st george

Here is the BEST vegan food on the island – make sure you put it on your list of things to do in Grenada! There is no menu, you just ask what is cooking today.

It is up the street opposite the St George bus terminal. It doesn’t look like a restaurant so you have to keep your eye out & head down an alleyway off the main street. The meal is 10EC which comes in a cardboard takeaway box.

Eco tip: Be sure to bring your own reusable utensils! 

18. Experience a Double

A traditional (originally from Trinidad) snack. Chickpea curry with mango and pepper sauce wrapped in a flatbread. With just the right about of spice, it’s a must-try when on the island.

These are served around the island, normally for breakfast. However our favourite is Latta & Frank’s Hot & Tasty Doubles along wall street.

19. Have some food and drinks at Container park

This collection of small restaurants operate out of shipping containers, hence the name of the park. There is a variety of food types here from local, to Mexican, to Indian.

Eco tip: Be sure to bring your own reusable cup, container, and cutlery. 

20. Visit the fresh fruit and vegetable markets

There are market stalls scattered all along the side of the roads in Grenada. You can find a wide variety of tropical fruits and vegetables for very reasonable prices. Or if you are looking for some great spices and souvenirs, there is a large market on the weekends in St George.

Eco tip: Bring your own reusable bags.

21. Experience the local Fish market

Each morning the fish market in St George is buzzing with life (it’s worth visiting).

Eco Tip: Lion Fish are a serious environmental issue in The Caribbean. They are an invasive pieces and have caused huge negative impacts to the local marine ecology. The fish market sells freshly caught Lion Fish daily. By eating them you are helping to reduce their negative impact on the coastal ecosystem. 

22. Taste locally made Rum

Grenada has three rum distilleries that you can visit – River Antoine Rum Distillery, Clarke’s Court Rum, and Westerhall Estate.

Eco Tip: Westerhall Estate actually offers a BYO bottle refill service. As many bottles used in the stores are plastic, you can bring your own glass bottle to the distillery in St Davids and they will fill it up for you. 

23. Experience Caribbean Gin

The Birthplace of Caribbean Gin, Blue Light Distillery is making gin using 15 different botanicals (most of which are sourced locally on the isle of spice).

The distillery is small, but has an impressive hand-painted, tropical mural. Be sure to see how the gin is made, taste the different experimental gins on the shelf, and explore the “Lightship” in the marina (just a short walk away). This is the one that is featured on the bottle’s label.

Eco Tip: Blue Light Distillery has a bottle refill station, so you can bring your old bottles back for a top-up (at a discounted rate).

24. Make your own Chocolate bar at Tri Island Chocolate

Tri Island Chocolate is a small, family owned and operated chocolate producer with an amazing organic farm in Saint Andrews.

They have an interactive factory in the middle of town (St George’s) where you can see the chocolate-making process in action and even make your own bars.

Eco tip: if you do visit the farm be sure to wear a natural mosquito replant as not to contaminate the area with chemical sprays.

25. Have a Vibe

Vibe Hard Seltzers are a new locally made product in Grenada. Found in numerous bars and shops around the island, they are a great drink for beach limes and outings!

Join a Clean Up, Or Do Your Own

There is a lot of plastic pollution in Grenada. Along some of the beautiful beaches and around waterfalls you may find trash scattered within the natural surrounds. Bring a bag to pick up a few items of trash on your adventures, and say no to plastic when out and about to help keep this beautiful island clean.

Transport Options In Grenada

There is a public transport system on the island. It is a small mini van (bus) with 9 bus routes.

• Keep your eyes open for the mini vans they have numbers on the front windows and cost around $EC2.50 for most trips. 
• The buses only run along the main roads so you will have to walk to and from the main roads if you want to get anywhere.

Things to consider when travelling to Grenada, West Indies:

• It is tropical – hot and humid.
• There are mosquitoes. 
• It’s relatively casual but you can get “dressed up” if you want too. 
• There are some good hiking and swimming opportunities. 
• Plastic pollution is a big issue in Grenada, with very little recycling availability. 
• Most takeaway shops use plastic cups, plates and utensils. 
• The supermarket still uses plastic bags, and will often double bag items.

The island of Grenada is often overlooked when compared to bigger and presumably-better, Caribbean islands. In this case, this small isle makes quite a compelling case for itself, with its charming hilly terrain.

Known as the Spice Isle, Grenada is one of the biggest producers of spices, providing the world with lots of cinnamon, turmeric, cloves and ginger ! Visitors to these shores are often compelled to find out more about its colorful history, and to experience its wonderful beaches and other natural attractions.

If you’re planning to go, make sure you keep at least one Friday night free as part of your trip to take in Fish Friday, Grenadian style , and also, be sure to pencil in some time to explore the many historical monuments that can be found here.

55. Take a trip to Hog Island

This secluded stretch of island is the ideal place to simply relax and unwind . You can get some much needed RNR on any day that you decide to go, but be sure to bring along some food, drink and some recreational material to keep you occupied. Sundays at Hog Island tend to pull a crowd that come out for the music, dancing, drinks and a good ol’ BBQ at Roger’s Barefoot Beach Bar. Hog Island can be accessed by car from Mt. Hartman . Once you get there, you’ll need to take a brief walk across the bridge for access. Visitors can also get there by boat from neighboring Woburn.

54. Walk along The Carenage

Location: St. George’s

Take a cool walk along The Carenage, which is a lively waterfront promenade in St. George , the capital of Grenada. Here you’ll find great views of everything from boats and wandering cats , to bustling workers preparing the boats to leave for other islands, or welcoming them as they come in. Explore the shopping centers, or revel in the sight of the radiant city and its infrastructure.

53. Climb up to Fort Matthew

This 18th century 1500-yard fort is the largest of its kind on the island and its name derives from the then governor, Edward Matthew. A visit to Fort Matthew is both intriguing and exciting, particularly for those who can appreciate the intricacy of 18th century style amenities like the army kitchens, bathrooms and the tables made out of rum barrels. The amazing view of St. George and the Melville Street Cruise Port make a trip to this part of the island more than worth it.

Location: Dragon Bay

This popular beach can be found near Molinere, along the west coast of Grenada . It is busy enough that you can enjoy some people watching, but not so busy that you’ll end up in a squabble over a prime beachside spot. There are bathrooms and a concession stand for your convenience but perhaps the best perk of all, is the wonderful opportunity to snorkel and dive among the seahorses and other marine life.

Location: Gouyave

The town of Gouyve (pronounced as gwav) has made a name for itself when it comes to finding the best fish every Friday . Locals and visitors come out in large numbers to enjoy some of the delectable fish meals, which include lobster, fish, lambi and other scrumptious seafood. The festivities begin at 6 pm and continue well into the morning with steel pan entertainment and Caribbean rhythms.

50. Visit nearby islands like Carriacou & Petit Martinique

Petit Martinique and Carriacou, part of the Grenadines, are two of the closest islands to Grenada. Carriacou, also known as “The Land of the Reefs” is a snorkeler’s dream while Petit Martinique is a fishing islet that has maintained its authenticity over the years. The smooth melody of Grenadian steel pan music is well loved across the island . The pan members play just about every genre of music and you’ll find yourself moving and grooving and in good spirits in no time. The sounds of the steel drums can be heard during Carnival, on the Carenage and at Spice Basket , a venue with authentic local entertainment. Suzuki Pan Wizards are one of the most popular steel bands on the island and has been in existence since 1988.

In 1651, in the town of Sauteurs, the last of the Carib Indians on the island of Grenada fiercely resisted colonization by the French. They resorted to committing a collective act of sacrifice: mass suicide. Together, they all jumped off the cliff and into the ocean, several feet below. The area where they jumped to their deaths is now known as Carib’s Leap .

44. Visit St George’s Anglican Church

This historical church was not left untouched by bad weather. It suffered some significant structural damages and since then, repairs have been underway to restore its ceiling and gallery. Nevertheless, you can still drop by to see this 1825 structure and learn the rich history of the majestic building.

As soon as the weekend hits, pork, chicken and fish can often be seen sizzling away on BBQ grills across Grenada. Preparation of this grilled food is an island wide practice and places like Jam-Down Jerk Chicken in Grand Anse Valley or Rosanne’s BBQ in St. David are among the most popular BBQ spots. Sure you’ve been bowling before, but have you been bowling in Grenada? The ambiance is different here, and so is the competition . Lavo Lanes is relatively new , and at this location you’ll find a bar and a rooftop area for those looking to chill, and not just bowl. More serious bowlers can use any of the 8 lanes to try for a perfect score.

41. Join the Grenada Hash House Harriers

Approximately 150 to 300 men and women meet up every Saturday for a cross country fun walk in Grenada . This social group is open to everyone, regardless of age and agility and they actually call themselves “drinkers with a running problem”. Once the island wide trail has been set up, the 2 hours or so walk begins as participants follow bits of clues along the way until they finish off at a rum shop or bar.

40. Visit in time for the Grenada Music Festival

Though this festival was launched only a few years ago, in 2016 , it may well be an excellent addition to your vacation “to do” list in the future. The first year of the festival saw performances by the ever-so-soulful Estelle, Joss Stone and the Roots Reggae musical band Steel Pulse . Local performers and vendors joined in on the festivities but in 2019, it was postponed due to insufficient funding. All we can say at this point is that you should keep your eyes open so you’ll be the first to know when this amazing festival makes its much anticipated comeback!

39. Chill at the Prickly Bay Marina

On the southwestern part of Grenada, lies Lance Aux Epines in the parish of St. George, where the Prickly Bay Marina can be found. It has become a hangout for sailors and other maritime folk, who come together to chill, eat and drink at the restaurants and bars and to take advantage of their deals. Whatever you do, don’t miss happy hour (5 pm to 6 pm)!

38. Visit Black Bay Beach

Location: St. John

The sand on Black Bay Beach is in fact black. This exotic, volcanic beach in St. John is considered one of the most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean , for its unique look. Here you’ll also find a cave that you can explore if you dare. The cave has markings from the Amerindians , the earliest settlers on the island. It only takes a short 20-minute trek from Concord to make your way to this private beach, so don’t miss out.

37. Plan a Saturday morning market run

Take a trip down to the fruit and vegetable market early on a Saturday morning to get first dibs on the freshest produce of the day . Vegetables, provisions and spices are often on sale and early birds are usually the ones with the biggest advantage as far as Saturday morning market runs go. The fruit and vegetable market can be found in close proximity to the local Fish Market .

36. Eat at the Creole Shack restaurant

This restaurant is appreciated by locals and visitors for its authentic, Caribbean style of cooking , as well as the relaxed atmosphere. You’ll find a variety of meals buffet style, including an array of meats along with macaroni pie, ground provisions and drinks . The meals are affordable, and the service is good. The Creole Shack is located within walking distance of the Fish Market.

35. Dine at Dodgy Dock

Dodgy Dock is a restaurant and lounge bar in St. George. Unlike some other restaurants, it is open every single day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even Sunday brunch . The menu consists of local dishes and international cuisine that is prepared with a Grenadian twist. Their menu is adaptable too, and vegans, vegetarians and gluten free folk can also find dishes to enjoy .

34. Explore Dougaldston Spice Estate

Learning the history of this estate will help you understand why Grenada has been dubbed the “Spice Isle.” Remnants of this plantation, such as the boiler, drill and the cocoa processing building are what’s left of a once thriving nutmeg oil distillation plant. Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves were grown here , but fortunately for everyone, these items are still available at the Grenada market, albeit manufactured via different sources.

33. Visit the Grenada National Museum

The Grenada National Museum is a busy one; in addition to the exhibits, it also hosts weekly cultural performances and outdoor lunches. The museum is sectioned off into various parts that reflect the content inside . These include Slavery, Plantation Economy and the Whaling & Fishing Archaeology. Interestingly enough, this museum was once housed a prison, barracks, hotels and even a warehouse – its history is very rich!

32. Discover Fort George

Fort George is a 1705 fort that was first called Fort Royal when the French ruled the island . Later on, when Britain took over, it was named after King George III and this name is still used today. This fort is strategically built; it offers an aerial view of the capital of St George and the harbor below . Though it is the oldest fort on island, many of its old buildings are still standing and can be accessed via a tour.

31. Spend the day at Grand Etang National Park

Location: northeast of Constantine

At an ascent of 1900 feet, this national park contains approximately 1,000 hectares of sweeping, lush vegetation, mountainous terrain and various ecological subsystems. It is home to a wide range of flora and fauna including the Lesser Antillean tanager, Mona monkey, broad winged hawk and mongoose . The Grand Etang National Park is part of the Grand Etang Forest Reserve and visitors can embark on a guided tour for about $1 or $2 USD.

30. Bask in the ambiance of Annandale Falls

Location: Willis

You may be awestruck by nature’s preciseness and beauty when you first get to the Annandale Falls. It is located in Willis, just a few minutes’ drive from St. John and a two-minute walk from the Interpretation Center . Below the 30 feet drop are the cool, clear waters of the falls that is enclosed with the rich vegetation that surrounds Annandale. The amenities here make it a popular stop for anyone who wants to go on an Annadale Waterfall tour .

29. Go deep sea fishing

Fishing in Grenada is sure to be a rewarding experience; undoubtedly you will catch some of the many fish that populate the island’s surrounding waters, such as sailfish, tuna and mahi mahi . Blue marlin lovers will be happy to know that it is plentiful from October-May and you can begin to fish just 20 minutes after sailing.

28. Visit Fort Frederick

Location: east of St. George’s

Soaring over the town of St. George, is Fort Frederick, which is located east of the capital. This fort offers an excellent view of Grenada and its surrounding areas . It was built in 1779 by the French. Since the British and the French frequently fought over Grenada, Fort Frederick was at one point used to defend the British from the French thought it was built by the French!

27. Splash around in Concord Falls

Location: Concord

The Concord Falls comprises of three different waterfalls at various altitudes, which determines how long it takes to get to them. The first and the lowest one is about 100 feet in, and the other two call for a bit more walking and hiking (45 minutes or more) from the very first fall. They are all located in a private area, and so, a small fee will be charged in order to gain access to the falls. These falls are perfect for those who enjoy a good hike; so, bring your friends or family and make it a fun day! Want to visit? Tip: Be sure to take the appropriate hiking shoes, and wear comfortable clothing.

26. Trek up Mount St. Catherine

Location: St. Mark

This stratovolcano stands at 2,760 feet (840m) and is recognized as the highest point in Grenada and in the southern Caribbean Sea. Visitors can hike up to the top of the mountain, but it is recommended that you do so via a guided tour. Bear in mind that the path is often muddy and be sure to travel with water to keep hydrated . Tours can be arranged in St. George’s or Victoria.

25. Dine at Whisper Cove Marina

Location: St. David

Take a stroll through Whisper Cove Marina in St. David, to have a look at the businesses that make up this harbor. The marina is situated in Woburn in Clarke’s Court Bay and includes a Meat & Meet market and a steakhouse. This is the ideal place to dine for those looking for a juicy steak and other succulent meats. Make your reservations early for dinner and the buffet, as dinner ends at 8:30 p.m. and the buffet (Sundays) end at 2:30 pm.

24. Go with friends to Umbrella’s Beach Bar

Location: Grand Anse Beach, St. George.

If you’re looking for a good time and fast food, look no further. The diverse menu at Umbrella’s Beach Bar includes cheeseburger sliders, shrimp, steak, loaded fries and the famous Umbrella Burger . Live music is sure to keep you entertained, particularly on weekends from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm (Fridays and Saturdays).

23. Visit Laura’s Spice Garden

This Spice Garden upholds the island’s reputation as The Island of Spice . Laura’s Spice Garden has a selection of plants, herbs and spices that are grown in Grenada. A guided tour will give you all the educational information that you need including the many uses of these plants as well as their names. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop on your way out to grab some souvenirs.

22. Take a tour of the island by car

To really get a feel of the island it’s a good idea to rent a car to drive yourself around . In that way you get to meet the locals, explore the beaches in St George’s such as Grand Anse and Magazine Beach , the latter which is perfect for snorkeling. Be sure to carry some (not too much!) cash for food and take the necessary precautions to keep yourself safe.

21. Seven Sisters Falls

Located within the Grand Etang National Park, the Seven Sisters Falls is considered one of Grenada’s most beautiful attractions. You’ll have to pay about EC$5 to access the Falls, unless you go with a tour, then the price may be included with your package. Most people enjoy the hike to and from the Falls, and a chance to dip in the cool water natural pools. You can go on hikes higher up the falls, but you’ll need to ensure you have sturdy shoes and an experienced guide . Having a guide is highly recommended, especially if you want to ‘jump the falls’, which can be dangerous. Guides will show you where is safe to jump, but keep in mind that the walk to the top of the falls is steep. If you don’t feel like pushing the limits, enjoy the views from the bottom, and a refreshing splash in one of the natural pools in the area.

20. Take a bath in the Royal Mt. Carmel waterfalls

Location: St. Andrew

This waterfall is recognized as the highest in Grenada, as it falls more than 70 feet below into the clear waters. Luckily, it won’t take much to gain access to the magnificent view, because you only need to trek about 30 minutes to get there . There are tour guides available if you need one and an entrance fee must be paid to the owners of the private land that you must traverse to get to the waterfall.

19. Sunnyside Garden

Sunnyside Garden in St. Georges is an award-winning tropical garden which has had several television features, including on the “Gardens of the Caribbean” series in the UK. Described as “extraordinarily beautiful” by some who’ve been, there are various garden rooms here with different levels visitors can explore. In between the greenery are ponds with koi fish and water lilies, and a guide will take you through the various plant and wildlife species that can be found in the area. This botanical garden is a must visit for those desirous of a breath of fresh air and want to see nature at its very best.

18. Have a craft beer at the West Indies Beer Company

Location: Lance aux Epines

Opening its doors in 2014, the West Indies beer Company continues to offer a wide variety of beers and ciders. They also cater to nonalcoholic drinkers and offer wine, spirits and soft drinks to suit their taste. All the beers are brewed on location and the company has expanded their services to include food as well, so you’ll be able to find items like burgers, pizza, ice cream and fish and chips .

17. Sample rum at the River Antoine Rum Distillery

Location: St. Patrick

Since 1785, this distillery has been processing and producing rum for the islands of the Caribbean and beyond. The process more or less remains the same and River Antoine stands as the oldest of its kind in the Caribbean. Tours are available Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm , and you get a sample of the liquor before you leave!

16. Visit the Belmont Estate

This private country estate is a fully functional 17th century style plantation that serves as a major tourist attraction in Grenada. Tours are available throughout the week; until the doors close at 4 pm As part of the tour, you’ll get to see the gardens, farms, museum and the facilities where the cocoa is produced. The restaurant on site also offers a scrumptious lunch menu, and you can stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs, or the café to relax.

15. Join a yoga session on the beach

Yoga sessions are relaxing, soothing, and are a sure way to bring peace to your body and mind. Yoga in the Caribbean however is next level. The peace of mind that you find is amplified in this part of the word , for the breezy ease with which you’ll find yourself moving through the way. If you’re experienced, you will be right at home at any yoga class, and if you’re not, no worries, it is very easy to learn! Some hotels on island offer yoga classes at reasonable cost, or you can try asking around at a local gym.

14. House of Chocolate

Learn all you’ll possibly need to know about chocolate during your vacation to Grenada with a visit to the House of Chocolate. Here you can go on a tour, shop for gifts, and learn about the intricacies of the chocolate making process . The House of Chocolate is essentially a mini museum as described by its creators, which features a café on site that offers tasty local chocolate treats. There’s also a boutique at this location where you can have your pick of an array of items made with cocoa to take back home with you. House of Chocolate is in St. George’s Grenada.

13. Reflect and sunbathe at La Sagesse Beach

Before your holiday comes to an end, you simply must visit La Sagesse Beach. Not only is it beautiful but it is quite peaceful too , because it is not frequented as often as the other beaches on the island. Unlike some of the other beaches in Grenada, there is only one hotel located near this beach, which comes in handy in case you want to grab something to eat . Otherwise, carry your own food and drinks.

12. Have some fun in the sun at Magazine Beach

Magazine Beach is found on the south west coast of Grenada . It is easily accessible , and all you’ll need to do to find yourself basking in the warm rays on these shores is continue along the main road after the Point Salines International Airport. It is located behind the airport, near the Aquarium Restaurant . There are hotels situated near the beach, which means things can get pretty busy here, but that should take away from the enjoyable experience you’re sure to have here.

11. Tower Estate

Estates and Plantation Houses are worth visiting when on this Caribbean isle, as you can learn more about the island’s history, and Tower Estate is a good place to start. Tower Estate is in the community of St. Paul, and here you’ll be able to go on farm tours or garden tours, with opportunities to stay for brunch, or afternoon tea. Before you leave, try their organic floral teas made from plants grown on the estate . A tour of this location is complete with a walk through the Great House, which is filled with rich history. Tower Estate is about 15 minutes away from St. George’s.

10. Join a costumed band for Spice Mas

The yearly carnival parade, known as “Spice Mas” is held on the second Monday and Tuesday in August . By then, the carnival season would have been open for several weeks prior, with various events such as dance competitions, Panorama and a Soca show. Jab Jab Jouvert is also a highlight of carnival, where people wake up super early (or don’t sleep at all) for an opportunity to party in the streets with a mixture of mud, paint, and Soca music!

9. Test the waters at Morne Rouge Beach

Some people prefer the waters of the Morne Rouge Beach as compared to Grand Anse and other beaches in Grenada. This is because the sea is quite calm here, and the beach itself offers a tranquility that is in contrast to popular beaches which are always buzzing with activity. Morne Rouge can be accessed by car, or by taking a quick walk from Grand Anse Beach, which is situated just next to it.

8. Sign up for a bicycle tour

Location: St. George's

Cycling through Grenada has been made easy thanks to Island Routes, offering a great cycling tour across the island of Grenada . You will cycle across much of Grenada's terrain, ride along the coastline, pass by the local fishing bay and even visit L'anse aux Epines!

7. Meet some Leatherback turtles at Levera National Park

Levera Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Grenada, located across the north of the island . The beach itself is always postcard ready, complete with golden sand, translucent blue waters and palm trees lining the coast. Levera National Park is an amazing place to watch Leatherback turtles . During the months of March until August, you can witness the turtles arrive, lay eggs and return to the ocean.

6. Explore the Underwater Sculpture Park

Grenada should be given more credit for its amazing diving sites with incredible views of the island’s coral reefs and shipwrecks . One of the main underwater attractions is the world's first Underwater Sculpture Park , which features a collection of underwater contemporary art. The sculptures are situated in a variety of depths with a maximum of 40 feet. The park is popular amongst scuba divers, snorkelers and glass bottom boat tours.

5. Relax at the Grand Anse beach

Grand Anse Beach is also ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving, or just taking a swim. Sunbathing here is highly recommended, because of the laid back ambiance.

4. Sandy Island

A water taxi is all it takes to get to this slice of paradise, and if you have your own yacht or speed boat, all the better. White sandy beaches and palm trees line the island, which is also a nature reserve, and the water is so beautiful and clear that it attracts divers vacationing in Grenada and in the nearby islands of the Grenadines, like Carriacou. Sometimes you can get a local fisherman to take you across to the island from Grenada ; the boat ride takes about 10 minutes. If you plan on spending the day there, bring along food and drinks.

3. Palm Tree Botanical Gardens

Palm Tree Botanical Gardens in Grenada is not particularly well advertised compared to some of the more well-known attractions, but when you go, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you find . There is so much beauty in the small space of this location, that it is best described as a garden’s dream. The guide here will take you through this enchanting space in a leisurely manner, ensuring that you leave better informed than you came. For great views, a chance to be at one with nature, and a wealth of information, this tour is highly recommended.

2. Go on a kayaking adventure

Conservation kayak will take you on an exciting kayaking adventure that will make it possible for you to see the beauty of the island and its wildlife firsthand . The trips are more than just paddling through the waters; most include lunch, drinks and quality time on the beach. You don’t need any previous experience in kayaking but you must be able to swim!
