  • Page 15 Manual Lumbar Support (If Equipped) If you have this feature, there will be a knob located on the inboard side of the driver and passenger bucket seats. Turn the knob toward the front of the vehicle to increase lumbar support. Turn the knob toward the rear of the vehicle to decrease lumbar support.

  • Page 18 To fold your non bench seatback forward, pull up on the latch release lever while pulling the seatback toward the rear of the vehicle. After the latch has been released, push the seatback toward the front of the vehicle until it locks in place.   • Page 20 To adjust your seatback, pull up on the lever located on the lower outside of the seat. To raise or lower the center console, press the button located between the beverage holders. Sit in the center seating position only when the console is in an upright and locked position.
  • Page 21 Removing the Rear Seats To remove the rear seats, do the following: 1. If you are removing the center seat, remove the right lap To do this, press the tip of a key into the release hole of the safety belt attachment while pulling up on the safety belt.

It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-24 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air bag covering.
  • Page 43 What makes an air bag inflate? In an impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. The sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the air bag. The inflator, air bag and related hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger.
  • Page 44 Air bags are designed to inflate only once. After they inflate, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system. If you don’t get them, the air bag system won’t be there to help protect you in another crash. A new system will include air bag modules and possibly other parts.

Common V8 Firing Orders, Distributor Locations and Rotation Directions

Common Firing Orders

There’s little as frustrating as finishing up a build and not remembering the firing order so you can install the plug wires and fire it up.

Of course, most of us know the firing order for our own ride and others we’re familiar with, but that doesn’t help much when you’re a Ford guy and you’re helping a buddy finish up and fire-off his Cadillac.

This table shows Firing Order, Distributor Rotation Direction, and Cylinder Banks.

Technical Note: All American V8s have offset cylinder banks to accommodate side-by-side rod pairing on the crank throws. In the absence of published information, the number one cylinder will almost always be the one that is farthest forward regardless of which bank it is on.

The exception to this rule is the Pontiac V8 where the forward most cylinder is on the passenger side. The number one cylinder is still on the front left side, but it is not the most forward cylinder on the block.

Chevy 5.3 Firing Order

In short, The firing order on a 5.3 LS engine is 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3. This means, the spark plug at number one cylinder (1) fires first, then number eight (8), and so on.

The distributor rotates in a clockwise direction, which means that when viewed from above, it rotates counterclockwise.

The number one spark plug fires first, followed by the remaining spark plugs in their respective order. It is best to always check the owner’s manual for your vehicle to find out the specific firing order.

What Does the Term Firing Order Mean?

The firing order is the sequence in which each cylinder in a multi-cylinder engine is timed to fire. The firing order is specified by the engine manufacturer based on certain factors that affect the performance of the engine, such as vibration and smoothness.

The firing order is expressed in the form of a series of numbers, designating the cylinder number to which the ignition should occur for each power stroke. The order may be clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the particular engine design. You can find out what is the firing order for your type of engine here.

What is the Purpose of it?

The purpose of firing order is to achieve smoother engine operation through the smoothing process in the combustion chamber. In other words, firing order is essential for strong yet smooth engine operation.

The firing order determines the sequence of power strokes, which is why the correct firing order is essential. A misfire in an engine can lead to catastrophic damage to the connecting rods or pistons or both, and if a driver continues running an engine with a misfire it can cause a severe backfire.

The firing order is set so that the forces on the connecting rods are balanced and so that the vibrations produced by each piston are evenly spaced out.

Why is a firing order important?

Firing order is important because each cylinder has a certain amount of time to complete its combustion cycle before the next cylinder begins its cycle.

When the engine gets out of time, it will run rough and have other issues. Firing order is also important in determining the power stroke of a 4-stroke engine.

A 4-stroke engine will produce power every other revolution of the crankshaft, so if the firing order is configured properly, the power strokes will combine to provide smooth power output.

Firing order is everything when it comes to a running engine. If you don’t get it right, nothing will work properly. As such, if you’re working on a car, better make sure that you’ve got it right before you start removing things and replacing them.

How Do You Determine it on a Chevy?

The firing order on a car engine is determined by the number of cylinders contained within that engine. There are two basic types, where either cylinder number one is the first to be fired or cylinder number one is the last to be fired.

Either way, it’s determined by the crankshaft, which governs which cylinder receives fuel when the piston starts moving up the cylinder.

It’s determined by the pressure exerted on each side of the piston and how long it takes for this pressure to equalize, allowing both sides of the piston to move at the same time.

Now that you know the Chevy 5.3 firing order, you will always be able to take care of your vehicle and fix engine problems before they get bad enough to warrant a call to a mechanic.

How To Diagnose Misfire Codes (GM 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L)

This article will help you to understand some of the most common causes of misfires and misfire codes (P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308) on the GM 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L equipped pick ups and SUVs.

I'm also gonna' offer you a simple diagnostic strategy (one I've used with a lot of success) and guide you to the test articles you'll need to get to the bottom of your misfire or rough idle issue.

How To Diagnose Misfire Codes (GM 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L)

A misfire condition, in non technical terms simply describes an engine that is not running on all cylinders.

This condition is also best described by other common terms: 'engine has a dead cylinder' or 'engine has a miss' or 'engine has a rough idle'.

Whether your GM vehicle has a V6 or a V8, if one cylinder or two cut out, it won't run on 100% engine power and this will cause some of the following consequences (symptoms):

  • The check engine light (CEL) will be on.
  • P0300 Random Cylinder Misfire.
  • P0301 Cylinder #1 Misfire.
  • P0302 Cylinder #2 Misfire.
  • P0303 Cylinder #3 Misfire.
  • P0304 Cylinder #4 Misfire.
  • P0305 Cylinder #5 Misfire.
  • P0306 Cylinder #6 Misfire.
  • P0307 Cylinder #7 Misfire.
  • P0308 Cylinder #8 Misfire.
  • Sometimes, even tho' the engine is suffering a bonafide misfire, no misfire codes are registered in the computer's memory and/or no check engine light (CEL) on.
  • Lack of power upon acceleration.
  • Smell of unburned gas exiting the tail pipe.
  • Rough idle and may stall.
  • Cranks but does not start.
  • Will not pass the emissions tests.
  • Bad gas mileage.

What complicates things a little further, is that your specific vehicle may come equipped with a TBI (Throttle Body Injection) or a CPI (Central Port Injection) or a CSFI (Central Sequential Fuel Injection) fuel system but in reality, all of the misfires, irrespective of the type of fuel or ignition system, have common root causes.

Since quite a few things can cause and engine to misfire, we need to understand the basics of what each engine cylinder needs to create power. Now, don't worry, I won't go into minute technical detail, just the basics (and in plain English) that you need to troubleshoot your misfire issue.

The most important thing you need to know is that each cylinder needs air, fuel, and spark to produce power. So, let's take a look at how each one is delivered to the engine:

Ignition System: The ignition system is responsible for the production and delivery of spark. The ignition system is usually the culprit behind a misfire.

The usual suspects (that cause a misfire, rough engine idle, engine miss, 'dead' cylinder, etc.) are:

  • Bad spark plugs.
  • Bad spark plug wires.
  • Bad distributor cap.

The good news is that all of the components that make up the ignition system can be tested, and at the end of the article I'll show you where to find the 'How To' test articles.

Fuel System: The fuel system is responsible for the delivery of fuel. If fuel is missing from any one specific engine cylinder, it will misfire.

GM in all its wisdom decided to use a fuel injector assembly (affectionately referred to as the 'Spider') that sits inside the intake manifold plenum. When this bad boy starts to fail (by leaking fuel inside the plenum), it will cause a misfire condition.

Engine Mechanical Condition: The pistons and valves are the ones that draw air into the engine. Usually all cylinders wear out evenly but every now and then, either thru' lack of maintenance or some mechanical problem, you'll have one or more wear out at an accelerated pace.

To make the long story short, those cylinders (with accelerated wear and tear) to produce a less than average compression value that will cause a misfire condition.

Other issues, that can not be overlooked are vacuum leaks.

1996 Astro - firing order

I have a misfire on #3. Have had this van since brand new with 150K miles, well taken care of, but now it mainly sits in the driveway with a cover on it. I drive it when I want to pickup stuff from the hardware store, about 400 miles/year. When I fill the tank, I would also add a bottle of Techron. It started misfiring when damp and throwing codes, but after running for awhile would smooth out and SES would clear. Now it has a pretty solid misfire on #3. The plugs/wires only have 20K miles (but 10 years!) on them. Put in a new distributor cap and looking to replace the wire on #3. I have the original factory repair manuals but could not find anywhere in them how to identify the cylinders. I don't want to put a lot of effort into this, so if replacing the #3 wire does not fix it, it will probably be time to sell it and move on. anyone interested in buying it? never had any body repair done, very little rust (other than the battery pan!).

IIRC it's 1-6-5-4-3-2. Driver side front is 1, middle 3, rear 5. Passenger side front 2, middle 4, rear 6.

Getting a little behing during preparations for holidays. Not panicing yet. I remember that the manual was incorrect when it came to firing order. Also remember that Olds was different the Chev as to which cylinder was #1 etc. Anyone have the correct firing order and cylinder layout handy that they could share with me? Fritz, Distributor rotation in the manual is backwards. Correct rotation is counterclockwise. Oops. I said clockwise intending to show "correct" numbering order on subject diagram (exchange the plug wires 3 and 6 numbers). Distributor rotation IS counterclockwise as the manual states. Gary, If you are referring to the distributer, yes it is different than a Chevy. #1 is the 5:00 position. Thanks to all that wrote All the reference I found in my manuals as to firing order are correct. The reference on 6Y 50 does not show distributor rotation but the numbering is correct. Thanks. I feel better about connecting the wires now. My manuals are only a year old. Maybe the error was corrected in these later printings? Thanks. Regards Gary Zingle 1973 GMC 26 foot

Chevrolet 7.4L (454 cu in) firing order — diagram & guide

One of the best things about Chevy is that they not only developed small block V8 engines but also some impressive big block engines along the way. As automotive enthusiasts, we love the old-school Chevy trucks with a 454 engine, so if you have one we salute you.

However, we believe that you’ve at least experienced misfire issues once before, so you’ll need to know about the Chevrolet 7.4L (454 cu in) firing order to prevent one in the future. Don’t worry, though, as our team of seasoned automotive experts will lead you through it for both L21 and L29 engines.

Chevrolet 7.4L L29 firing order

The Chevrolet 7,4L L29 firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and this was the first version of Chevy’s 7.4-liter V8 engine. In fact, this firing order doesn’t only apply to the 454 cu in engine, but also to other big block Chevy V8s such as the 396, 427, and 502.

However, the fact that there are two versions of the 7.4-liter engine made drivers a bit worried that they will use a wrong firing order when dealing with the engine, so let’s see if there’s any difference.

Chevrolet 7.4L L21 firing order

The Chevrolet L21 engine is also a 7.4-liter V8, only this time it was more oriented towards commercial use than for heavy-duty vehicles. To give you a straight-up answer, the Chevy 7.4L L21 firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, which is exactly the same as for the L29.

Moreover, these engines don’t only share the same engine block, but also the majority of other components, so it’s not a surprise that the firing order is also the same. Even so, there are some slight differences between these that may require different maintenance steps.

The most notable ones include forged pistons and crankshaft, so these were considered to be much more durable than the L29 engine, especially on higher revs.

For most of Chevy’s V8 engines, we have two cylinder banks with four cylinders each. However, unlike big block V8s from other manufacturers, Chevy uses a specific pattern with cylinders 1, 3, 5, and 7 being in the “odd” bank, and cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8 being in the “even” bank.

So, it’s the same case with this engine as you’ll find the odd cylinder bank on the the driver’s side and the even one on the passenger’s side.

Chevy 7.4L vehicle applications

Now that we’ve cleared up some differences between the two versions of this engine, it’s time to give you a rough idea of all the models that come with it:

  • Chevy Suburban
  • Chevy Express

The L21 version also came with some vehicles like the Chevy Motorhome or the GMC TopKick, so the engine was also used in a few other models except for Chevy.

Overall, the firing order for the 7.4-liter big block V8 is the same as for other V8s that Chevy made at that time, so we hope to have helped clear that out. On top of all that, make sure to pay attention to the cylinder arrangement in this engine as it’s not the standard one you’d expect out of a V8.
