Overnight Cruises: Where to Go, What to See
Last updated: September 25th, 2023
- Find a Cruise
Overnight cruises are a great way to experience the best a destination has to offer. You can take your time exploring your favorite ports and discovering the vibrant nightlife of a city. Often, staying the night is a chance to see a completely different face of a destination, sample its cuisine, and check out local bars, pubs, and cultural performances.
Whether you’re hoping to see the sunset in the Mediterranean, sample sizzling street food in Asia, or dance the night away in the Caribbean, here’s everything you need to know about cruises with overnight stays.
What’s it like being on overnight cruises?
On a cruise with an overnight stay, you’ll feel as if you’re spending the night in a luxurious floating hotel. You can come and go as you please throughout the evening.
At your overnight port stops, you can go sightseeing during the day, come back to the ship to change and relax, and then head back out and enjoy the city’s restaurants and nightlife.
You can also spend the day exploring the port, come back for dinner in one of our onboard restaurants , then head back out into the city to enjoy a night excursion or a cocktail.
Which cruises stay in port overnight?
Cruises with overnight stays are available in over 40 ports of call on Celebrity Cruises in each major destination we cruise to .
Sometimes, overnights will occur during the middle of a cruise. Other times, overnight stays are offered at a cruise’s embarkation port just after you board, or at a ship’s last port before you disembark the following day.
Here are some of the exciting overnight cruises you can experience on Celebrity Cruises:
Overnight Cruise Ports in Europe & Africa
Lisbon, Portugal
On a cruise to Europe , you’ll have the opportunity to stay overnight in multiple cities. There’s Lisbon in Portugal, beautiful Dubrovnik in Croatia, or in Italy, La Spezia, gateway to both Florence and Pisa. Voyages to the Eastern Mediterranean stop for the night in Athens, Greece, or exotic Istanbul, Turkey.
Further north, Celebrity’s ships overnight in Reykjavik, Iceland; the elegant French city of Bordeaux; and Copenhagen, Denmark, all famed for their after-dark scene.
Cruises to Egypt and Israel , meanwhile, overnight at both Ashdod, the gateway to historic Jerusalem and cutting edge Tel Aviv, and Alexandria, Egypt, giving you more time to immerse yourself in some of the most spectacular sites of the ancient world.
At an overnight stop in Lisbon, Portugal, board a funicular to the top of Bairro Alto, where you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of the city’s landmarks and have a chance to enjoy authentic Fado music.
Florence, Italy
While in Italy, the overnight stay in La Spezia gives you a chance to explore historic Florence or Pisa after sunset, joining locals for their evening stroll and aperitivo hour.
Bordeaux, at the heart of one of France’s greatest wine regions, is a wonderful place to spend an evening, the lights of the city reflected in the curve of the Garonne River and pretty, flower-filled squares lined with outdoor cafés and bistros.
Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland
Take advantage of your two days in Iceland to sample the nightlife of Reykjavik, and explore the country’s thrilling natural wonders, including Godafoss waterfall, the famous Blue Lagoon, and the lava fields of Dimmuborgir.
Sultanahmet Square, Istanbul
Explore the magnificent sites of Jerusalem over two days on a cruise to Israel; you’ll need this time as there’s so much to see here.
Some cruise itineraries to Turkey and the Greek Islands include a night in Istanbul , where you can tour famous landmarks like the Blue Mosque and shop for local goods at its famous Grand Bazaar. Watch the minarets of the city fall into silhouette at sunset as you stroll along the Golden Horn.
Temple of Poseidon in Athens, Greece
If your ship is in Athens for the night, take a trip to Cape Sounion to admire the dreamy sunset and explore the elegant Temple of Poseidon before heading back to the capital for dinner with a view of the floodlit Acropolis.
On a cruise around the Baltic Sea , stay for a night in Copenhagen, Denmark or Oslo, Norway, and discover the design and culinary treasures of these Scandinavian cities. Copenhagen in particular is known for its cutting-edge culinary scene.
Even if you don’t have dinner ashore, the pubs and bars along the waterfront of colorful Nyhavn are buzzing late into the night. Visit either city in summer and you’ll enjoy long, light-filled evenings.
Overnight Ports on Bermuda Cruises
During a cruise to Bermuda , spend two nights at the historic Royal Naval Dockyard, famed for its restaurants and nightlife. Take time for an evening catamaran cruise to enjoy the glorious sunset and a rum swizzle. If you’re looking to sample the local bar scene, sign up for a guided pub crawl.
If you’re in port on a Wednesday, join the locals at the exuberant Harbor Nights Street Festival in downtown Hamilton. After dark, Front Street is a whirl of color, music, street food, and dancing, as everybody embraces the party spirit.
Because the two nights give you so much time in port, you can really get to know Bermuda, whether you’re sunbathing on pale pink beaches, enjoying a round of golf, taking in some of the historical sights, or cycling and hiking the scenic Railway Trail.
Overnight Cruise Ports in the Caribbean
On a Caribbean cruise , experience a unique overnight stay in Aruba’s Oranjestad; Willemstad in Curaçao; historic Cartagena, Colombia; or sultry New Orleans.
After spending the day lounging on one of Aruba’s white-sand beaches, cap off the day by boarding a catamaran and sipping a cocktail as you enjoy a breathtaking view of the sunset.
Willemstad, Curacao
On your overnight stay in Willemstad , there’s plenty to do. Admire the brightly colored buildings all lit up at night, or head to popular Mambo Beach, where the party starts before sunset and carries on late into the night.
Cartagena has one of the most magnificent examples of Spanish colonial architecture, with lively local bars and classy restaurants to try after dark.
The Big Easy, meanwhile, needs little introduction; an overnight stay is the perfect opportunity to listen to live jazz or do something offbeat like take a ghost tour.
Overnight Cruise Ports in Asia
Bangkok, Thailand
Our Asia cruise itineraries include overnight stays in multiple cities, from Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand to glittering Hong Kong and bustling Hanoi.
In India, you can delve deeper into the local culture in Cochin and Mumbai, while there are also overnights in Colombo, Sri Lanka; Penang, Malaysia; Kyoto, Japan; and Benoa, Bali.
On a Southeast Asia cruise , you’ll have extra time to discover Phuket’s famous nightlife or head to a romantic beach restaurant for dinner.
During your night in Bangkok, the famous night markets are a must for jewelry, clothing, and handicrafts, with sizzling street food on hand if you feel like a snack and an ice-cold beer.
In Hong Kong, take in the iconic skyline and enjoy a primetime view of its famous Symphony of Lights show in Victoria Harbour, one of the city’s highest viewing platforms.
Penang, too, has some fantastic rooftop bars from which you can take in the sparkling lights of the city—perhaps after browsing the bustling Batu Ferringhi Night Market. The Old Quarter in downtown Hanoi , meanwhile, is enchanting after dark, and perfect for a nighttime stroll.
Kyoto, Japan
If you’re sailing on a cruise around Japan , an overnight in Kyoto is the ideal opportunity to enjoy a traditional shabu-shabu dinner followed by a Marko performance.
Voyages to India, meanwhile, are a chance to photograph the famous Chinese fishing nets at sunset in Cochin or take in a spellbinding Kathakali dance performance. In Mumbai, experience the buzz of the night markets, or head out for dinner for classy and classic Indian cuisine.
Overnight Cruise Ports on the East Coast
Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, Canada
One of the best places in North America to experience the atmosphere after dark is elegant Quebec City, Canada , known for its French-influenced chic culture, European architecture, fine dining, and state-of-the-art museums.
Take a night cruise on the St. Lawrence River, stroll the old city, and stop in at a local pub—and round off the evening with a snack of poutine, the local specialty of fries, cheese curds, and gravy.

Meanwhile, cruises around Hawaii include overnight stays in Honolulu, Kailua-Kona, and Hilo. By day, hike, explore the lush volcanic scenery, or lounge on the beach, leaving evenings free to marvel at the dazzling sunsets, taste traditional island cuisine, and enjoy a hula ceremony.
Overnight Cruise Ports in South America
Buenos Aires, Argentina
On cruises to South America , you might spend a night or two in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where you can take in a sensual tango show or dine at one of the world-famous steakhouses with a chance to taste the country’s legendary red wines.
There’s also an opportunity to fly inland to the spectacular Iguazu Falls, straddling the border of Brazil and Argentina, where some 275 massive cascades of the Iguazu River plunge over the edge of the Paraná plateau. You can do this either as a day trip or an overnight, returning to Buenos Aires the following day.
Overnight Cruise Ports in Australia, New Zealand, & the South Pacific

Your guide to Los Angeles
The local subway and light rail system is being revamped and extended to relieve the city's infamous traffic situation. Renting your own wheels is a great option for visiting areas still in need of better public transportation. Meanwhile, many locals opt for Uber and Lyft to enjoy cross-town nightlife without having to worry about a DD.
Los Angeles is a city of perpetual summertime, with bucket-loads of sunshine year round. All the same, some times of year make for a more pleasant visit than others. Spring and fall have more moderate temperatures than the sweltering summer months. Plus, these seasons offer the added bonus of ducking the summer crowds. In fall, you'll get to see the city dressed up for Halloween, and attend the spooktacular events that go along with that.
One of the great advantages of heading off to a sunny destination is that you don't need to bring much with you. There are a few non-negotiable items you'll definitely want in your suitcase though:
- Sunglasses: If you're not wearing cool shades, are you even really in Los Angeles? Pack your flashiest pair and prepare to feel summery to the max.
- A swimsuit: A trip to the beach is more or less compulsory, so bring at least one swimsuit and strut your stuff on the sand alongside the locals.
- Sunscreen: Yes, it's a necessity. Yes, even in the winter. The Los Angeles look is golden-brown, not crispy and red, so keep yourself protected.

Top Short Cruises
By Carnival Cruise Line
You may have reasons you aren’t taking your vacation days. Maybe its work, cost or you just came back from a long trip and can’t get away for a while. Whatever your challenge is that’s stopping you from taking a vacation, we have a solution.
Sail away for a short two, three, or four day vacation on a cruise . It’s affordable, won’t cut into your workload and planning a short cruise makes you the hero of your family. You’ll also come back feeling on top of the world, like you’ve been away for far longer.
Once you see how easy it is to plan a short cruise vacation, and its return-on-investment, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to book one. Let’s take a look at the top short Carnival cruises where you can get away to relax, have fun and reconnect with yourself and your family. Leave for warmer climates from departure points in Los Angeles, Miami, and other cities around the country.
Short Cruises from California
You have a choice of several short three and four-day cruises to Ensenada departing either from Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco.
On a three-day cruise to Mexico from Long Beach/Los Angeles, San Diego, or San Francisco, you’ll stop in Ensenada for a day of exciting shore excursions:
- There, you can feast on Mexican tacos, tequilas and margaritas , or take a tour of wine country .
- Play hard on your short cruise by horseback riding or touring the Guadalupe Valley with an ATV ride.
- On a four-day cruise from San Francisco , you have the luxury of two, relaxing days at sea where you can enjoy onboard activities and cuisine. Among the many choices, you can dine on a sumptuous, multicourse meal hosted by the ship’s Master Executive Chef at The Chef’s Table or reserve a table at the gourmet Steakhouse .
Short Cruises from Florida
Near Florida? Take advantage of these quickie cruises to The Bahamas or the Caribbean that leave from five ports around the Sunshine State. Check to see the numerous sailing dates for all of these itineraries. Here’s what you can pack into a three or four-day cruise.
- The three-day cruise to The Bahamas takes place on Carnival Sensation ® . On day two, you’ll head into Nassau . You’ll have many opportunities to play with dolphins or sail on a catamaran on Rose Island Beach.
- From Miami , you can cruise to Cozumel and Key West on Carnival Conquest ® , Carnival Victory ® , or Carnival Sensation for three or four-day trips. You’ve never seen Key West until you’ve taken a splash into the clear beaches, or have taken in the history of the islands . Go on a pub-crawl and take a tour of the Hemingway home .
- Cruises from Orlando to The Bahamas sail on Carnival Liberty ® and Carnival Elation ® for three and four-day cruises. Your three-day visit to Nassau has another built-in mini-vacation. Four day trips include extra time in Half Moon Cay , Princess Cays or Freeport , depending on your choice of cruises. Explore the beaches of Half Moon Cay by going horseback riding in the ocean . In the Princess Cays, hang out with stingrays and, when in Freeport, have a blast by going swimming with dolphins .
- Cruises from Jacksonville sail on Carnival Ecstasy ® for four-day trips. On all cruise packages to The Bahamas, you’ll stop in Nassau where you’ll have plenty of shore excursions to keep you happy. There’s no need to learn to dive or snorkel. Have yourself a unique underwater adventure in Nassau riding a SUB , an underwater motorbike with a mask around your head.
- With cruises from Tampa to Cozumel, you’ll take Carnival Paradise ® for four-day trips. Once on shore, get your thrills by ziplining in Cozumel , or just relax and escape to the beach .
- Cruises from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean , you’ll have four days on Carnival Sunrise ® . On a trip to The Bahamas, you’ll stop in Nassau and either Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays. On a four-day cruise to Eastern Caribbean, you’ll stop in pristine Grand Turk where you’ll find plenty of water and beach activities. Go Snorkeling in Grand Turk , and learn to stand-up paddleboard on the beautiful beaches.
If you have four days to take a vacation, you’ll also find a variety of cruises departing from other cities around the country. Set sail from New York City , depart from South Carolina . Sail off from Galveston , New Orleans , or Mobile to exciting destinations.
Once you experience a short cruise that sails into one or two ports, you’ll know how easy it is to get away in a pinch. You may even find that short cruises give you just enough time to kick back, unwind and soak in all the onboard cuisine, entertainment and activities. In fact, you can go the whole cruise and never eat the same thing twice. Have breakfast at the Breakfast Grill , lunch at Guy’s Burger Joint and dinner in the Dining Room . Start fresh the next day with new eateries.
In between meals, take part in all the onboard fun. Laugh like you’ve never laughed before at The Punchliner Comedy Club . Or get away from all the action and hang out in the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ . Honestly, who knew you could get so much relaxing done in such a short time?
Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by ship and destination.

The northern lights could appear over parts of US Friday night: Where to watch for auroras
The northern lights could appear above parts of the northern u.s. on the night of friday, may 31 into saturday, june 1. forecasters eye next week too..
BOULDER, COLORADO – Space weather forecasters say portions of the northern U.S. could see the northern lights Friday night into Saturday, and there could be another dazzling aurora display next week — although it's too early to know for sure.
First, a bit more on what could happen in early June. A cluster of sunspots responsible for the spectacular nationwide May 10 aurora display has rotated back in view of the Earth, potentially setting up conditions for another spectacle, the federal Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, said. Very simply put, those sunspots fire up the solar storms that can trigger auroras here on Earth.
But, again, top experts there say it’s still a bit too early to confirm if next week's display will happen.
Where could the northern lights appear Friday night?
The northern lights could appear above parts of the northern U.S. on the night of Friday, May 31 into Saturday, June 1. "The aurora may become visible over some northern and upper Midwest states from New York to Idaho," the SWPC said.
That aurora, if it occurs, will be courtesy of a geomagnetic storm that's hitting the Earth on Friday. A G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the Earth for both Friday and Saturday, the SWPC said.
Bigger northern lights show next week? It's too soon to know.
Next week sometime, a more widespread aurora event might be possible, forecasters said. It all will depend on whether or not the sun belches out a solar flare and/or coronal mass ejection toward the Earth, which would trigger the geomagnetic storms and thus the aurora.
Shawn Dahl, a senior forecaster for the SWPC, said although the sunspot group known as Region 3697 has now rotated back to face Earth, it's too early to say whether it will send out another coronal mass ejection.
"We're forecasting stuff from 93 million miles away, so it's very difficult. And our science is limited," Dahl said. "We can do a great job of predicting the probability that the flare will happen, and if so, what level if might get to, and the same with radiation storms, but we have no way of knowing that a flare is imminent. That science doesn't exist. And we also don't have the science to know when a CME is going to explode off the sun. We have to wait for them to happen."
Skywatchers have their fingers crossed
Eager skywatchers have their fingers crossed, because June 6 is a new moon, meaning the skies will be extra dark and any aurora that does show up will be extra vibrant. Dahl, an amateur astronomer and night sky photographer who missed the May 10th display because he was working, said he's hopeful for a new display caused by the sunspots.
"We have no way of knowing whether it may produce a CME again, but flare probabilities are still high with this region," he said.
Hughes reported from Boulder, Colorado; Rice from Silver Spring, Maryland.

Russian-Held Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine Attacked Twice in One Night
(Reuters) -The Russian-held city of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine came under attack twice within three hours early on Tuesday, officials said, the latest in a series of strikes near the city.
Fires appeared to have broken out in both strikes. Ukraine made no official comment on either incident.
Leonid Pasechnik, Russia-installed governor of Luhansk region, said the first attack at about 9 p.m. (1800 GMT) was made with cluster munitions.
"A fire has broken out as a result of the attack," Pasechnik said, noting that information on casualties was being clarified.
Russia's Tass news agency, quoting emergency services, cited injuries.
Ukrainian media and war bloggers posted a picture of what they described as a large fire in the city.
A second strike hit the city at midnight, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said, apparently in the same general area.
Rodion Miroshnik, a special ambassador for the ministry, said city residents had heard two explosions in the same district as the site of the first attack.
"It cannot be ruled out that the repeat strike occurred at the site where rescue teams are dealing with the aftermath of the previous missile attack," Miroshnik wrote on Telegram.
Ukrainian news outlets said the target of the second strike was an airfield and posted a video of a fire spreading over a wide area.
Reuters could not independently confirm battlefield accounts or what weapon might have been used.
Ukraine's military has launched at least three attacks on Luhansk and nearby areas in recent weeks, targeting mainly fuel storage depots.
Russia annexed the Luhansk region several months after its February 2022 invasion, along with three other regions, though it does not fully control any of them.
Much of Luhansk has been occupied since 2014, when Russian-financed separatists took over swathes of territory in eastern Ukraine after large protests prompted Russia-friendly President Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country and Moscow's forces seized the Crimea peninsula.

Notebook: Texas Longhorns Cruise Past Louisiana, Set Up Matchup With Rival Aggies
Connor zimmerlee | 3 hours ago.
The Texas Longhorns (36-22) came into the College Station Regional as the No. 3 seed thanks to a disappointing showing in the Big 12 Tournament in Arlington. Going 0-2 did them no favors, and as a result, they were placed in a tough regional.
It didn't get any easier when they drew the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (40-19) as the No. 2 seed, featuring one of the best offenses in the nation. That didn't faze them, though, as they came out and handled business in dominant fashion to the tune of a 12-5 blowout win .
Now here are three key takeaways from the Longhorns' win over the Ragin' Cajuns.
Grubbs delivered
Coming into Friday’s game against the Ragin’ Cajuns, the Longhorns sorely needed Grubbs to deliver a strong performance and shut down a potent lineup. Well, he did just that as he gave his team a much-needed solid outing. He gave up an early pair of solo home runs but buckled down after that.
Aside from those two mistake pitches, Grubbs only gave up two other runs in his five innings of work. Striking out four, the starter worked himself out of a couple of jams to leave in line for the win. And thanks to the offense's performance, he got the win to push Texas into the winner's bracket.
Offense showed out
Of course, it helps your starter when the offense takes them to an early 10-2 lead. That is exactly what the Longhorns did for Grubbs as they came out firing on all cylinders. Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth, they put up three runs to give Texas the lead.
The true show came one inning later in the fifth, however. Keeping the bats red hot, the Longhorns exploded for a whopping seven runs. Four of those came on one swing, with Jalin Flores launching a grand slam (his third of the season) to break the game open. They eventually tacked on two more runs, cruising to the 12-5 victory.
Saving Boehm
While the Longhorns have been inconsistent at times out of the bullpen this season, they have had a stable of reliable arms. Chief among them were Andre Duplantier II and Gage Boehm, with the former seeing action in the win over Louisiana. He gave Texas a solid 2.2 innings of shutout baseball, striking out four and giving up just one hit.
Meanwhile, Boehm was not needed in this win as it was never close after the fifth inning. For Texas, that is almost as big of a win as the win itself. A proven commodity in the later innings, Boehm's ability to shut down opponents in tight games has been massive for the Longhorns.
Having him fresh if needed against Texas A&M on Saturday evening is a bonus for the Longhorns and something that could be the difference between a win and a loss.
What's next for Texas?
After another strong showing in a regional opener under David Pierce, the Longhorns are in the winner's bracket. They will take on the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday night at 8 p.m. CT for a shot at the regional final.

ANAHEIM — Just when Patrick Sandoval gave the Angels hope that they might be able to pull off a series victory against the New York Yankees, his teammates came up short.
The Angels managed just one hit while Sandoval was in the game and reliever Adam Cimber gave up five runs in the seventh, sending the Angels to an 8-3 loss to the Yankees in the rubber game of the series on Thursday night.
It was a 2-1 game after Sandoval threw his final pitch in the sixth inning, ending one of his best outings in a disappointing season.
Cimber then entered in the seventh. He has been a reliable reliever all season, with the notable exception of three blowup outings.
This time he walked four of the six batters he faced, including two with the bases loaded. He left with the bases loaded. Lefty Jose Suarez allowed Juan Soto to unload them on his first pitch, when Soto pulled a bouncer down the right field line for a three-run triple.
Cimber has now allowed 10 earned runs in his last six games.
“He was only one pitch away from getting out that inning,” Manager Ron Washington said. “And I’ve seen him many times make that pitch. Tonight he just didn’t do it. Maybe we have to go back to the drawing board and start putting him in some situations where he can get his game back together. And we might have to pull someone else out of that bullpen and see if they can step up in those situations.”
After the seventh inning debacle, the Angels were down 7-1, and the only hit they had managed was a Logan O’Hoppe homer.
Although they strung together a rally to score two runs in the seventh, it was too late to make a difference. The relatively paltry offensive performance against left-hander Carlos Rodon was disappointing because the Angels came into the game with the fourth-best OPS in the majors against lefties.
“Early in the game, (Rodon) had good zip on his fastball, and he had a good changeup and breaking ball, and he kept us off balance,” Washington said. “But then once we’d seen him twice, we came back out the third time and started getting to him. But by that time we had allowed them to get five extra runs.”
The late arriving offense and Cimber’s loss of control cost Sandoval, who continued the Angels’ recent stretch of solid starting pitching. Angels starters gave up six runs in 16 innings in three games against the Yankees.
The only blemish in Sandoval’s performance was a two-run homer from Aaron Judge, who tied for the major league lead with his 18th.
Sandoval has struggled for much of the season, but he’s now allowed three runs or fewer in five of his last six starts.
One of the changes he’s tried lately is adding a sweeper to his repertoire. He threw it only 15 times in his first 10 starts, but he threw 12 of them last week against the Cleveland Guardians and 21 against the Yankees.
Sandoval got Judge looking at a sweeper for strike three in the first inning. Judge looked at another one for the first strike of his at-bat in the fourth inning.
Apparently, Sandoval tried the pitch one too many times to Judge, though. He threw it again on a 2-and-1 count in the fourth, and this one hung right at Judge’s thighs, on its way over the fence.
“One mistake that he got to,” Sandoval said. “I probably shouldn’t have thrown it. Logan wanted a changeup there.”
Sandoval bounced back to get nine more outs without another run scoring. He left the mound with an emphatic scream after the third out of the sixth inning.
“He was out there competing,” Washington said. “That’s a strong lineup. … Just left a pitch there where (Judge) got to it, but other than that he competed hard out there. He was involved in what he was doing. That was one of his better outings.”
